A note from

I’m nearly a summer forever kind of girl and the reality is that a part of me dies slowly when fall starts to appear. But let’s be practical here, fall is beyond gorgeous, and all that beauty points to a majestic, creative God. That in itself is reason to love fall altogether! As winter slowly approaches, I love how even during the winter new life is happening. Snow may hide the activity, but nonetheless, the earth is not dead; it is being prepared for something even more beautiful! I find it hard to believe that it’s nearly 2016! Life seems only to move more quickly! This past

year I had a personal goal to become thankful in even the little things. Even when life feels disappointing – to be thankful gains you much happiness that you might have missed had you thought negatively. Something that helped me was a thankful jar which I filled with happy things of my life. I found it was encouraging to read them later in depressing times. Find out more about this on page 49. I can imagine,

the little boy, maybe leaning his head on mommy’s shoulder or sitting on his grandma’s lap. He’s just an ordinary boy, who enjoys when his mommy reads him a story. His mommy realizes that the literature she pours into him now as a child, will affect his adult life. She smiles contentedly when he sits beside her on the floor, drinking in the high-adventure stories from the Scriptures. Faithfully reading these stories to her little son, I can see his mommy smile when she hears her work is paying off. I can imagine her excitement when she hears him telling his friends that he wants to be as brave as Daniel in the lions’ den when he grows up. Someday, I can almost hear her wish; I want him to be like Daniel, too. I want him to be able to hear the voice of God like Isaiah, to be able to walk with God like Enoch, to be a leader of God’s people like Moses!

11

I can imagine his mommy stroking his thick black hair as he sleeps. She watches his regular breathing and prays for him. She prays that someday, her little Timmy will be an influential leader in building the church. She prays that God would give him an early desire to be a Christian leader. What is more, she realizes that she, herself, will have an immense impact on Timmy. She and Grandma are special people to Timmy and he looks up to them with respect. She feels the load upon her shoulders to lead Timmy in the right way; and she thanks God that there have been an abundance of men of faith in the past for Timmy to look up to. Mommy often shares with Grandma about Timmy. They both love him very much and long to see him grow into a man of God. Besides their mutual prayers, . She prays that God would give him an early desire to be a Christian leader.

there is always plenty of opportunities for Grandma and Mommy to be examples to Timmy. I can only imagine the joy and the absolute satisfaction that Mommy and Grandma feel when they see Timothy, a few years older, experience the salvation that Jesus offered and make a commitment to serve Jesus for the rest of his life! I can only imagine the sense of motherly pride she feels, when Timothy, a few years older still, is standing for truth, leading out, and being the bishop that God called him to be in Ephesus. He’s young, and he’s been anything but perfect, but he is now set as an example to hundreds of others! I can almost hear Mommy sigh contentedly, My little Timmy! I can imagine she is overjoyed. She passed on her love of the Lord, she tried her best to be the example that would lead his young heart to God. She sowed the Word of God in his heart, but God watered the seed and brought the increase in Timothy’s life. His mother, Eunice, was nothing supernatural. She had God though, and God is supernatural. When God is at work and God’s power flows through a person, we can expect nothing less! Sometimes I read the story of Timothy in the New Testament. I marvel at his testimony and wonder if I could ever be that great, that godly or that influential. Little did Timothy’s mother know, those early years of her motherhood, that her

Timothy’s mother know, those early years of her motherhood, that her baby wouldn’t only be the bishop of Ephesus and an example in his lifetime. Two thousand years later, his testimony would still be an encouragement to millions of Christians worldwide! Timothy was once an ordinary child and an ordinary youth. No doubt, he had younger siblings, cousins or friends that looked up to him. He probably had that handful of cousins or siblings (like we all do) that seemed to perpetually get on his nerves. And for a fact, one does not go from having no followers, to suddenly being an example to all of Christendom. It’s those small, almost unnoticed steps that, with God’s help, a person can take. Rather than focusing on what kind of example we are to others,

we need to focus on following the Best Example ever given us! Then is when we will be able to, like Eunice and later Timothy, see that those people who followed us, were actually following the way of Jesus all along!

EVERYONE IS AN EXAMPLE And though you and I may never be such leaders as Timothy was every one of us are examples. It’s very pertinent that we lead those following us down the right road. Sometimes we notice the effect we have on others. You’ve probably made a dress with a different sleeve style and gotten such comments as, “Where did you get that idea?” Or, “That is such a cool idea!” Or, “Could you show me how you did that?” Such comments stem from admiration. After hearing such words, you probably wouldn’t be surprised to see your admirer, a couple weeks later, wearing a new dress with a similar sleeve design. It’s natural. And in such a case, you were an example: even a

a similar sleeve design. It’s natural. And in such a case, you were an example: even a trendsetter. Sometimes examples and trendsetters are a lot more subtle. Many times the trend isn’t clothing or shoe styles. Sometimes it’s is the way a person talks or acts.

EXAMPLES IN SPEECH I have some cousins that live in Tennessee. It sure didn’t take them long to acquire that neat Southern accent. They lived, worked and went to church with people who all had a distinct accent. Pretty soon, almost subtly, the accent wore off on them. It doesn’t even take

“Don’t despise your youth, but use it to be an example in word, in conduct, in charity, in spirit, in faith and in purity.” subtly, the accent wore off on them. It doesn’t even take months or years. Sometimes when I go to visit them for a weekend, I find myself using a few redneck terms or pronouncing words in a Southern manner. It’s not wrong at all. But it can be terrifying to realize how quickly such influence can alter certain things about us. It proves that the amount of influence necessary is very minute.

EXAMPLES IN ACTIONS There is a little first-grader (we’ll call him Brad) that goes to our church school. Looking at him you may think he’s shy and reserved. But he’s a leader and isn’t afraid to use his influence for fun sometimes. Every Monday morning the entire student body gathers in the basement for chorus practice. Soon after eight-thirty you’ll hear the pitter-patter or clomp-clomp of the scholars making their way downstairs. This particular morning everyone was waiting quietly in Behind him, follows his nine classmates. In the same manner they 14 enter the basement. Each one is walking silently, almost tip-toeing their way towards their places. Each

their places, except for the firstand second-graders. After a few moments, a soft pitter-patter is heard, descending the stairs. At the front of the line is Brad. He is walking silently, almost timidly. His head is bowed slightly, and his hands are clinging perfectly to his side. Almost tip-toeing he walks the length of the basement and stands in his normal place. Carefully he places his toes exactly on the line on the floor. Behind him, follows his nine classmates. In the same manner they enter the basement. Each one is walking silently, almost tip-toeing their way towards their places. Each one places their toes exactly on the line where they are supposed to be placed. And each one stands still, with their hands at their side and their heads bowed a little. The students, who are waiting and have just witnessed the scene, try to stifle their laughter. One little leader, so

subtly influenced all his classmates, by solely being an example!

CONCLUSION You may never know how many people are following your example. You may never know the difference you will make in someone’s life. But you do know that you are an example- a trendsetter, in someone’s eyes. In conclusion I want to encourage you with the words Paul wrote to Timothy, “Don’t despise your youth, but use it to be an example in word, in conduct, in charity, in spirit, in faith and in purity” I Timothy 4:12. Don’t pass up the opportunity to be that good influence, that good example to them. It’s up to you, but I plead with you: Don’t let them down. |

“A CHRISTMAS STORY”

T

Written by: Kristy Yoder

The old school bus wound its way through the curving streets of downtown York, Pennsylvania. A fine misting of snow covered the passing shops, restaurants and apartments concealing dinginess and neglect with mystery and elegance. Streetlights, lovely with green holly and red ribbons, glowed golden in the gathering dusk. Inside the bus Holly joined merrily with other students in singing the Christmas song, “Silver Bells.” The small group of Bible school students were on an Inner City Mission Trip and Holly had thoroughly enjoyed the day’s new experiences. Passing out invitations door-to-door for the school Christmas program was terrifying at first but left her with a warm feeling of satisfaction and the afternoon spent doing crafts with children from the neighborhood had been lively and interesting.

15

Her enthusiasm from a fun and successful day overflowed into anticipation for the evening. The Guardian Angel Nursing Home sprawled on a hill high above the city and as the bus growled into 2nd gear they began curving upward above the crush of buildings and metropolis. The streetlights dimmed and the glistening snow enhanced the first timid stars as they sparkled overhead. Soon carefully landscaped trees, shrubs and grounds came into view, proudly arrayed in snowy white. The bus mustered one final turn, up and around to a huge and mostly empty parking lot. Inside the warm ambience of the nursing home the group walked through the halls, stopping to sing at a number of private rooms. They were only a few students without a lot of volume or skill. They sang the familiar carols with joy and their pink cheeks, red noses fresh from the cold outdoors and even brighter smiles, made it beautiful. Tired wrinkled faces glowed as the students took time to visit with the residents before moving on. Holly stopped to admire the pictures of children and grandchildren prominently displayed on one lady’s side-table. She was delighted at the interest and Holly listened attentively to her memories of past Christmas celebrations with family. “We won’t be able to get together this year,” she sighed, “So glad you all came, my dear.” Later driving through the darkness, the bus stopped at an overlook above the city and braving the cold, the students ventured out to admire the brilliant lights flickering below. The mission director started singing, “Silent night, Holy night, all is calm, all is bright.” After a few more songs he shared briefly about several ways the mission was working to spread God’s Word in the area and mentioned a number of prayer requests. Even the bitter cold could not chill the warmth and love emanating from their prayer meeting. Holly felt full to overflowing from the beauty of it. Back at the mission, she snuggled under the able to work at an Inner City Mission someday. The

spiritual warmth of their evening and the

blankets in a strange bed unable to sleep. It had been so beautiful and perfect. Maybe she would be able to work at an Inner City Mission someday. The spiritual warmth of their evening and the glow of Christmas cheer made the thought seem wonderful. Daydreaming she almost fell asleep when the bedroom door opened. Two girl friends entered quietly and began undressing in the dark room. “Such a cold, boring evening,” Amy whispered. “Why did I ever sign up for this class?” “Same here,” groaned Julie. “Absolutely no one fun for us to be with too. And the singing was embarrassing. The alto was so quiet that I wasn’t sure there was any.” The two girls giggled. “Shh,” urged Amy. “Don’t wake her. She is so—well, childish. Do you know I think she had tears out there on that freezing hill.” “Maybe she is a little overly emotional and dramatic, but still nice,” demurred Julie. “I like her.” “Of course,” said Amy. “But she enjoys everything! So boring and good.” “She’s just not our type, I guess,” agreed Julie slowly. *** It was Christmas Eve and the large, spacious kitchen smelled delightfully of spicy sugar cookies. The cozy warmth from the wood stove made the room a favorite hangout for the entire family, especially on such a bitter cold evening. At the table near the large bay window Holly and her sister Merry were busy decorating Christmas cookies. Holly frosted a star cookie with white icing and then added blue sprinkles. “Don’t you just love these new blue cookie sprinkles?” She handed the bottle to her younger sister. “It would look lovely to have a tray of just these star cookies with some silver colors,” Merry disagreed. Mom joined them with a fresh batch of cookies.

candy kisses tossed over it.” “Just blue? I prefer a tray with all different colors,” Merry disagreed. Mom joined them with a fresh batch of cookies “Will you be sharing a bit of your Bible school experience with the Youth girls class next week?” Holly shrugged, “I don’t think so.” She picked up a still-warm candy cane cookie and then reached for more white icing. If Holly hadn’t been so distracted by her decorating she would have noticed that Mom appeared to be deep in thought. With a trueMom instinct, she puzzled over Holly’s lack of enthusiasm for Bible School or more accurately over her reluctance to talk about her last few weeks there. At Thanksgiving break she had been thrilled with everything. Actually her family had become weary of hearing about her marvelous time. What could have happened? Mom sent Merry out to feed the calves and sat down to help decorate cookies. Gradually over icing and sprinkles Mom heard about the disappointing ending to her wonderful mission trip. After sympathizing and supporting she asked, “Holly, are you going to let this one incident ruin all the good times you enjoyed at Bible School?” Holly winced at the word “enjoy” and tried to look serene and indifferent while carefully frosting a gingerbread boy. “Of course, Amy’s feelings were always pretty obvious, but Julie was my friend. It was such a special evening and overhearing their conversation just spoiled it.” “There can be a little truth in any criticism.” Mom handed her the bowl of M&M’s. “Perhaps you are a bit dramatic at times.” Her question ourselves at such times. None of us are perfect and perhaps your unhappiness right now

smiling glance included the row of white cookie stars with blue sprinkles. “Personally I prefer drama over boredom, but it doesn’t hurt to question ourselves at such times. None of us are perfect and perhaps your unhappiness right now would be less if your emotions hadn’t been so involved. On the other side it can be a gift to enter into life so thoroughly; it enables us to rejoice in the happiness of others or to sympathize in the sorrow of a friend with true understanding.” Holly listened quietly and somehow felt better. Telling Mom made everything easier. The incident had seemed enormous and ugly in her mind and now it really wasn’t such a big deal. “I probably won’t see Julie very often anyway. She lives in a different state and so it doesn’t matter so much.” “Think how unhappy Julie would be if she knew you heard her comments. Be grateful that it wasn’t your careless words that spoiled the happiness of a friend. Sometimes when we try to please one friend we hurt another. Make this a character-building experience so that it doesn’t become a bad memory only a good lesson.” Merry burst in the door in a flurry of cold air and excitement. “It’s snowing like everything. Come look!” They both glanced out in surprise and sure enough the early evening darkness was whitening with driving snow. Holly lingered by the window watching the whirling snowflakes. A few plucky drops were already beginning to spread their lacy patterns on the sidewalk and porch railing. Somehow Mom’s caring words had thrown a lovely white covering over the unpleasantness of her friend’s betrayal. It no longer seemed very important. She really had enjoyed her visit to the mission and surely tomorrow would be a white Christmas! |

I had my better times, and I would find things that helped a bit, but in the end, year after year, I did less – less physical work, less exercise, less socializing, less fun stuff. No doctor immediately picked up on the connection between the reaction I had to the vaccines and the increasing pain and immune dysfunction that kept cropping up. Because the root cause went undiagnosed for so long, and because I was being treated for things besides the original problem, my pain levels continued to spike and my health continued to deteriorate. Treatment for Lyme disease helped some, pills to manage the Rheumatoid Arthritis alleviated a few symptoms, and a cocktail of ES prescription drugs managed pain for a time. But no singular pharmaceutical or herbal concoction the States

had to offer would “cure” me. And that is why I was sent to a Klinik in Switzerland in September 2014: to safely get off the drugs and to get highly sophisticated help in recovering from the vaccination reaction. But

let me tell you, brave isn’t traveling solo across the ocean to a foreign hospital for medical help. No, I was just desperate and out-ofmy-mind-crazy from pain. Brave is actually getting up every morning in the face of pain. Brave isn’t living

So today, take a good look at that Daily Hard you’ve been called to do. life with NO questions. Nope, that’s not brave because brave is actually facing hard life questions every day and keeping your mental capacity intact. There is a lot of misconception about bravery. And maybe that’s because we usually define bravery as something we personally couldn’t do or might never do. “And that’s that”, we say because we are more aware of our weaknesses than anyone else. So the girl who goes to Uganda and adopts 13 orphan girls or the women who devotes her life to ministry in India… I say they are famously brave. Let’s be realistic, you’ll probably never do the adopt-13-girls thing or the India thing. And some days being heroic seems a whole lot easier more glorious than what you are currently doing. Bravery is a theme God wants to run through every person’s story. This isn’t the super-hero cape or the fun lifestyle.

WHO AM I?

The other day might have been quite possibly one of the most frustrating difficult days of the entire year for me. I was frazzled, frustrated, scared, lonely, and hurt. I was at the end of my rope and about to break down at any second. I remember walking through the store about to burst into tears so I went into the bathroom to be alone. When I walked in and looked in the mirror I let loose. I cried and cried. I had been holding onto way too much junk and not talking to anyone about it. As I cried I looked down at the sink and saw a piece of a paper towel with handwriting on it. I picked it up and read these words: “Remember who you are”. There were little seagulls drawn around those beautiful words. I don’t know why but this note comforted me more than you would have thought. A complete stranger had written those words and left them to be found by another stranger. God knew I needed that message. God knew that I needed to remember who I was. And who am I? These last few weeks that is exactly the question I have been asking myself. Who am I in this world? What is my purpose? What if my dreams and desires aren’t what God has planned for my life? What will I be doing five years from now? Who am I? When we are focused on ourselves and all of these complicated questions we are not at peace. I was focused on me. The little “I” and “me” words were the center of my vocabulary. But God knew what to do.

25

He knew that all I needed was a wake-up call. I needed to remember who I was/am. I thought long and hard about those words: “Remember who you are.”

WHO AM I? God needed to remind me that I am who He says I am. Not who my friends say I am. Not who I think I am. And not who my family is. I am Lisa. I needed to see that my past does not define me. My relationships do not define me. My relationship with my dad does not define me, because I have a perfect Father. I have Someone who knows who I am to my deepest core. To the very bottom of my soul Jesus sees me. He knows me and still chooses to accept and love me. In this day and age we put so many labels on who people are. Labels such as: freshman, junior, graduate with this major or that major, your position, your job, your relationship status, your race, your church, your school, etc. The list could go on and on… But we are more than what we have been labeled as.

“But we are more than what we have been labeled as.”

Hope.

life

– Elizabeth George

How you are defined by the world has great power over you. If you’ve been defined as shy, a dork, a beauty queen etc., you will no doubt socialize differently than you would if you were alone in a room filled with your closest friends and family… If you haven’t accomplished what your peers expects you to accomplish you can fall into depression. The people around you should not be the defining force in our lives. Just because we don’t measure up perfectly according to what the everyone else says we should be doing we should not let that conquer us. We should not let that run our lives, cause us to make wrong decisions, or change the way we really are. Remember who you are. Don’t fall into the worldly mindset. Don’t be defined by other people or by society.

STAY BEING WHO GOD WANTS YOU TO BE. It’s easy to forget who we are in our day- to -day lives. We let things like feelings of loneliness, feelings of inadequacy and depression get in the way of us being able to blossom into the beautiful unique girl God has created us to be. If we only knew the thoughts that God thinks of us, if we only knew how much He really cares for us we would never need the acceptance that the world dangles in front of our faces _ just out of reach each and every day.

SHIFT YOUR FOCUS. Quit thinking about what is wrong with you. You need to

God?

TOO BUSY FOR

HAVE YOU EVER FELT

that it is cool to have a lot going on? I mean you don’t want to say that you’ve been cleaning your nails or coloring pictures all day. We all love to have a lot going on. Maybe it makes us feel valuable or special. Whatever the reason, it’s always exciting to tell the person next to you that tomorrow is a big day.

Most of the time it’s just really hard to say ‘no’ to stuff. As time goes on we get busier and busier and our time with God gets less and less. Pretty soon our devotions which we had every day is now once every two weeks.

29

If you continue reading, you’ll get some answers and some activities to make your devotions more interesting. 1. Make God your top priority Let me ask you a question. Would you go to school with your hair uncombed or with your teeth un-brushed? No, probably never – well that’s the way it should be with God. Let Him be your top priority. Find some time on your schedule to have some valuable one-on-one time with Your heavenly Father. It can even be when you’re eating breakfast or on the way to school.

2. Don’t be hard on yourself When you start to make God a part of your day don’t be hard on yourself if you slip! We humans are far from perfect. You seriously may not have time that day. That’s okay. Just try harder tomorrow. 3. Schedule time for God Whether it’s in the morning, just after work or school, or even before bed- make time for God. Give some effort to make it a daily routine. We need to hear His wisdom and let Him help us through our day. David says in Psalm 143:8 “Let me experience your faithful love every day for I trust in you to reveal to me the way I should because I long for you.” If you have trouble with making your devotions interesting, here are some ideas!

Find a closet! It says saysininthethe Bible when Jesus talked to God he went into His closet. Now I’m not saying literally have to go into your closet. I’m saying just find place where no will disturb you. Whether it’s a tree fort in your backyard or a cozy corner in your room- basically whatever works for you.

Splash some color! It saysthat in the Now you have thought of a place for you to dive into the Word, let’s have some fun decorating it! Try placing some pictures around, maybe even a favorite Bible verse or quote. Just decorate it however you like. Give it your unique look and taste, making sure it’s inviting to go to!

Snacks anyone? You may think when you are It says in the doing your devotions, all you have to bring is your Bible. Yes, do bring your Bible- but why not some food? If you do your devotions in the morning, take your coffee or tea and maybe a quick breakfast. (This is strictly if you’re a morning person!)

I could probably write on forever about ideas for making your devotions more creative, however I will stop now. I do want to end on a good note here thoughabove all, don’t give up! Yes, it will be hard to get into it for a while but obviously it will be worth it. Don’t lose heart, just trust God and He will help you through it. |

“I

fight against the pain and feel angry against the pain and feel angry at the situation, my heart would become a wall of bitterness. I chose thankfulness.

n everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). In everything give thanks? Did God really mean EVERYTHING? What about the death of a loved one? Terrible diseases? Financial loss? Family or friends who turn away from the truth? Did God really intend for us to be thankful in those situations? The answer is yes! Every one of us faces circumstances in which we find it difficult to be thankful, but in each of those challenging hardships, we can thank God. What can we be thankful for in the midst of pain? It’s a question that plagued me not too long ago. I had found myself in the middle of a proverbial storm. As I lay in the ruins of my broken dreams, I lifted my eyes heavenward, my mind racing, my heart throbbing, “WHY? What can I be thankful for in THIS?” In that moment of despair, God gave me a choice. I could either become

bitter or better. If I chose to accept the pain and be thankful in the midst of it, He would use it to mold me more and

37

more into His image. If I chose to at the situation, my heart would become a wall of bitterness. I chose thankfulness.

The answer didn’t come immediately, but by faith, I gave thanks. When it felt as though I was all alone… I said “Thank You, God, for drawing me closer to You.” When it hurt so intensely I hardly dared to breathe… “Thank You, Jesus, for Your healing love.” When the darkness closed in, not a glimmer of hope in sight… “Thank You, Father, for teaching me to trust.” When I thought the pain would never fade, the dawn would never come… “Thank You, Lord, for being my light and joy.” When it seemed that every dream I had ever held in my heart was crushed beyond repair… “Thank You, God, for being the dream that’s still alive.” The pain didn’t vanish, the problems weren’t solved, and my dreams were not restored. Yet in the midst of the overwhelming pain, the inexpressible heartbreak, through thankfulness I found joy, hope, peace, love. I found God. My story is not over; it’s still a continuing journey. However as I look back on that agonizing time in my life, I am thankful for it. I can see good things the Lord has brought out of it. He has taught me many things and helped me to grow through it all. Thankfulness is not just something we need to find in the hard scary situations. It is a virtue we need to practice every day.

If we open our eyes to the many ordinary blessings God has placed in our daily lives, we can find gratitude. When we’re feeling down and discouraged, that is when we need to give thanks. One day a few years ago, I was feeling disconcerted about something and my mom told me this quote that stuck with me forever. “Thankfulness always precedes the miracle.” I decided to try it out. Sure enough, it worked every time. I have found it quite helpful to keep a thankful journal. When I’m feeling upset about something or am just in a downright bad mood, I get out my thankful journal. First, I write down how I feel and then I list some things I can be thankful for. It always helps because it is impossible to feel discontentment and thankfulness at the same time. Another idea is to remember others who have it much worse than we. Not only are we rich in material possessions compared to most of the world, but we are also rich in so many other ways. I read something recently that said, “To feel rich, count the things you have that money can’t buy.” Next time you feel like complaining about something, remember to count your blessings instead. Psalm 50:23 says, “The

one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies Me.” Let’s all strive to glorify God by making the effort to thank Him for the countless blessings He showers upon us each day. |

Reader’s Poem 39

I walked along a lonely path, The leaves littering the ground. The animals were away in hiding, The birds could not be found. I muttered to myself, "So this is fall! Everything just Withers up and dies." A few minutes later, it was Made known to me that I clearly was not alone. The Son of God, Jesus Himself Strode by my side. I looked to my left, and I saw A dream. Two little girls were raking leaves. I cried to Jesus, "How dare you! You of all Know what losing my sister did to me." But Jesus simply replied, "Child, Keep walking." And I walked. Now up straight ahead was a Vision of a family, happily Decorating their house for the season. I sighed "Jesus, why are you, Showing me this? Don't you know I have Nothing left?" But Jesus calmly replied, "Child, Keep walking." And I walked. Now up ahead, through the evening mist I saw a shape looming in the trees.

By: Addie Imel

And I walked. Now up ahead, through the evening mist I saw a shape looming in the trees. Only as I got closer did I Realize what it was. It was the cross that Jesus Died upon to save our guilty souls. I opened my mouth, but nothing came out, There was no complaint to make. Deep down inside of me rose a Feeling that I couldn't recall. It was Gratitude, but more. It was then that I knew what it really was to Truly be thankful. Jesus put His hand on my shoulder, "Child, Keep walking." And I Walked.

TELL US A LITTLE MORE ABOUT YOU: I am Katrina Grace Swartzentruber. I am the youngest girl in our family (but not the youngest.) I have 3 older sisters (two of which are married) and one brother (he's the youngest). I'm 14 years old and enjoying 10th grade very much. I live in the gorgeous state of Missouri. And not like Ozarks, Branson and all that stuff. I live in rural Missouri. Like 1-hour-from-aWalmart-Rural. I love music, photography and I am what people call a coffee snob.

40

Meet Katrina Swartzentruber What’s your favorite part about the Christmas Story? Besides the fact that Jesus was born, Mary is my favorite part of the Christmas story. Courageous, brave, wise and a jillion other amazing things. I strive to be like Mary every day.

Favorite Bible Passage? “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.” Psalm 51:10-12

How do your friends describe you? Umm...I talk too much? I asked my best friend and this is what she said: “Energetic, beautiful, Christ- like, awesome.”

Do you have a favorite Christmas memory? Christmas for me is not a huge family reunion type of Christmas a lot of people have. We live 4 hours from our closest extended family and 18 hours from most other. As far as Christmas memories, the most special ones are with the whole family (Grandma, Grandpa and aunts, uncles and cousins) together for Christmas.

What do you recommend for a best book and hot drink?

41

Probably the Janette Oke, Canadian West series and a pumpkin spice latte is always a must!

Favorite Christmas tradition? My favorite Christmas tradition is one we started in the last couple years. Usually, we would distribute the gifts to people they were addressed to and then go around the circle, each opening a gift. Our new tradition is for everyone to get the gifts they purchased to give, and put them on a pile by them. And then we would go around the circle, each person (when it was their turn) to pick a gift and give it to whoever it was for. This really emphasizes the giving part of Christmas, rather than just getting. Another favorite Christmas tradition is reading the Christmas story.

Give us some ways to bless others in this upcoming season: Cookies? Caroling? Scraping sidewalks? Something we sometimes do is make cookies and bars etc. and set up a table outside of a store. We give them to people going in and out, demonstrating the greatest gift of all.

Any advice for the readers? Advice? Let’s just take it from Dr. Seuss. “Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you!” Just be you!

Character

building

Written by: Dorcas Yoder Photography by: Elisa

Sunny days, friends, a new dress, chocolate? The good things I am thinking about right now come with a choice. Every girl faces these choices on a daily basis and gradually her character is built by what she chooses to read, listen to, or look at. I want you to take a little time to think about the choices you are making every day in these areas. I woke up early one morning and padded out to the kitchen for my first cup of coffee. There looking at me through the patio door was our dog, Nimrod. He anxiously barked at me as I filled my cup with cream and coffee. “What's the matter,

42

Nimrod? I questioned going to the patio door and looking out to see if a storm was approaching. As I opened the door Nimrod bolted for me and managed to squeeze his large body half way through the door before I could react. Scolding him, I pried him back through and shut it quickly. As I stepped outside, I immediately sensed what was causing his anxiety. The air was filled with honey bees zipping noisily all around me, the early sun reflecting off their wings. It felt like hundreds of them. We have

spiritual heart. several bee hives in the yard, so I ran back inside and alerted hubby that all his bees went crazy over night. I stayed inside as he hustled out amid all the buzzing to check on things. In a few minutes he was back and told me to come look. Beside the garage was a box with a frame of honey in it. Someone had set it out briefly and forgot to put it back. It was so covered with honey bees that we couldn't even see the frame any more. It took them a few hours, but soon the bees had all the honey back in their hives. They knew about good things, and they were

43

going to get it. There are a few questions to ask yourself when you are choosing books, music, or videos. The first one is, am I getting enough spiritual food in my life? There are times we read books or look at something for pleasure only and that is alright. God has given us the ability to enjoy life and we should use that gift. But also make time to read your Bible, a book by Elizabeth Elliot, etc. This question could also be asked where music or videos are concerned. Make time for spiritual truth to take root in your heart.

44

Another question is, Does this glorify God? Your music should lead you to worship God, not the singer or a worldly belief. If a video or a book you choose is entertaining, but has indecent scenes, it should be avoided. As a Christian your heart must be pure before God. If your conscience pricks you by something you've seen or read, listen immediately. As you make good choices, you will develop a desire for the good over the counterfeit bad.

45

The bees would not have been so busy and happy on that sunny morning if it would have been a jar of vinegar outside. They knew what was good and they went for it. When we took honey off at the end of the summer, it was a beautiful, golden color and tasty. The bees

for it. When we took honey off at the end of the summer, it was a beautiful, golden color and tasty. The bees made it from good stuff. So when you make choices every day remember to be like the bees. Know a good thing when you see it and choose to make it a part of your life. The character quality you develop will be pure and of great value to the kingdom of God. |

You’ve probably heard you’re mom say that “beauty comes from the inside” and thought “Yeah right.” Well believe it or not, your mom is right. So what really makes a girl attractive? Try these glowing beauty secrets:

QUICK TIPS

beauty 46

Outward Focused If a friend shares a difficulty with you or expresses sadness over something, do you remember to ask them how they are doing the next time you see them? Sometimes even a quick phone call, or text is encouraging, and lets them know you haven’t forgotten their problems.

Smile If you haven’t discovered this “face lift for free” try smiling more often. It will brighten your entire face.

Eye Contact Make direct eye contact when you are speaking with someone. When you nervously avert your eyes, it makes you look insecure.

Voice Does your voice sound confident and mature? Some girls carry their “baby talk” into their adult years, and it is not attractive. Believe it or not, the maturity of your voice and your ability to carry on a conversation will be of critical importance when it comes time for you to find a job.

Faith Compassion If someone is hurting, do you make an effort to speak words of compassion to them? A simple “I’m sorry you’re going through that. Is there anything I can do to help,” goes a long way and most important reveals the beauty in your heart.

A girl who loves Jesus more than life can’t help but shine from the inside out. She will brighten every room she enters, and her glow for Christ will be contagious!

Attitude Have you noticed how your attitude can affect an outcome? You can’t always change your circumstances, but you can choose your attitude.

Servants Heart I am shocked at the number of people who have never been taught to look out for the needy. I have watched teenagers brush past elderly people practically knocking them over when heading through a door. If you see someone in need, elderly or not, offer to help them. A servant heart is one of the most beautiful characters qualities there is.

The way you treat your family There is nothing more unattractive than a girl snapping sarcastically at her parents or her siblings in public, If this is a problem for you, learn to hold your tongue and express yourself when the time is right.

Ability to laugh at yourself Have you learned to laugh at yourself when you do something embarrassing? Everyone is going to blow it from time to time whether thy trip and fall, or say something totally idiotic. Rather than act paranoid, crack up! If you don’t make such a big deal of it, chances are no one else will either.

Ability to admit weakness and flaws: Everyone has weaknesses- it’s a fact. Can you admit to yours when they show up or do you pretend like you always have your act together?

NEW YEAR’S EATING BAN BORING BREAKFASTS

Resolutions

48

POP SOME SNACKS Oftentimes mornings can be hectic and stressful. Try making your breakfast the night before (like a smoothie in the freezer or some overnight oats) and grabbing it before you head off in the morning. Make sure it’s packed with lots of protein!

Need something to nosh on? Skip the chips. Popcorn is one of the best snack foods ever, so why not make your own and dress it up? Try something new by going spicy (sprinkle on a dash of chili powder), savory (add rosemary and lil’l parmesan) or sweet (toss with cinnamon and hot chocolate mix). Try to keep your snack life free and healthy as possible.

Mom made too many veggies for dinner? Don’t let the leftovers fester in the fridge. Roll them up into a whole wheat tortilla wrap for a a new twist on your old sandwich. Or stuff some salad into a pita a you’ve got a healthy pocket instead of your tried and true peanut butter and jelly.

Fact: 75 percent of teen girls in the U.S don’t get enough iron, which can leave you tired, grumpy and unable focus. Slice strawberries onto a spinach salad with some chicken or add red bell peppers and cashews to a beef stir-fry. Apricots and almonds are great too.

QUICK

STUDY HACKS

As the halfway mark for school approaches, it often can seem that it takes an unbelievable amount of self-control to focus. We compiled a list of ways to stay focused and motivated, this winter season.

2.

50

Put a temporary ban on electronic devices: This includes cell phones, telephones, MP3 players, tablets, laptops, and computers. Silence your devices or shut everything completely off. A lot of times you can get quite distracted

3.

Set a small reward for yourself: Motivate yourself to do your work by creating a mini-reward for yourself. Treat yourself to your favorite latte, listen to your favorite song, or get up and do some quick stretches…only after you’ve finished your work.

Procrastination: 1. Avoid There’s not much to say about this one, as I suffer from this myself. My advice to you is just do it. Get a grip and just do it. Think of the consequences if you don’t finish your homework, and by all means – don’t put it off!

4.

If you’re not an early bird, give it a try for once! Attempt to hit those devotions early before any distractions can grab you. (give a shot at one of our amazing winter drinks pg 35 to sip along with your bible readings!) Early morning has you feeling sluggish? Jump start your engine by splashing super cold water on your face, or taking a cool shower!

Learn a new skill: Always wanted to learn how to play piano? Try your hand at teaching yourself! The scales may be easier than you think!

Studying for 30-50 minutes at a time (with 10 minute breaks in between) is the best way to retain information

5. Train 6.

51

Get comfortable: If you eat a huge meal before studying, you'll feel bloated and sleepy; if you don't eat, your grumbling stomach and light head will be all you think about. Snack on healthful foods like peanut butter crackers and fruit before studying. granola in your bag for a study break. Bring a bottle of water and a caffeinated drink, if necessary.

your mind: Even when you're isolated from external distractions, your mind will wander at some point during your studying. Learning to deal with these distractions allows you to dismiss them quickly and get back to work. Keep a notepad nearby. If something occurs to you that you need to deal with or look up later, jot it down so you can forget about it. When you find yourself simply daydreaming, try closing your eyes,

Express gratitude for the people in your life, write one thank you note every week to a different person!

Don’t Quit: Finishing that book you started writing more boring than you ever thought possible? You’d rather get the flu than going to your violin lesson? It’s easy to give up on something when it gets rather blah, but those are the moments when you begin to remember why you start in the first place. It’s worth it.
