If I could catch a rainbow I would do it just for you And share with you its beauty On the days you're feeling blue. If I could build a mountain You could call your very own; A place to find serenity, A place to be alone. If I could take your troubles I would toss them in the sea, But all these things, I'm finding, Are impossible for me.

I cannot build a mountain Or catch a rainbow fair, But let me be what I know best, A friend who's always there.

Verse to Remember And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding.

Facts about Butterflies

Butterflies (Order: Lepidoptera) are brightly colored flying insects with two pairs of large wings that vary in color and pattern from species to species. Butterfly wings are covered with overlapping rows of tiny scales, a characteristic butterflies share with their fellow lepidopterans, the moths.

Diet A caterpillar’s first meal is its own eggshell. It then spends most of its time eating the leaves of the plant on which it hatched. An adult butterfly uncoils its long, straw-like proboscis to sip nectar from flowers, juice from rotting fruit and water from puddles.

Population Exact numbers are not known since there are about 17,500 species of butterflies spread throughout almost the entire world.

Range Butterflies are found worldwide except on the continent of Antarctica. Many species migrate to avoid adverse conditions. Most migrate relatively short distances, but monarchs and several other species migrate thousands of miles.

Behavior Life cycle: From egg to adult, butterflies undergo a series of physical transformations known as metamorphosis. After mating, the female butterfly lays her eggs on a caterpillar food or “host plant. The eggs can hatch within a few days, or within months or even years, depending on whether or not conditions are right. After hatching, a caterpillar begins to eat the host plant. The caterpillar sheds its skin several times during this stage. It then seeks a sheltered spot, suspends itself by silken threads and sheds one last time to reveal skin that will harden to form the chrysalis or pupa. Days, months or even years later, depending on the species, a fully developed winged adult emerges from the chrysalis and the cycle begins anew.

Facts about Butterflies

Butterflies range in size from a tiny 1/8 inch to a huge almost 12 inches. Butterflies can see red, green, and yellow. Some people say that when the black bands on the Woolybear caterpillar are wide, a cold winter is coming. The top butterfly flight speed is 12 miles per hour. Some moths can fly 25 miles per hour! Monarch butterflies journey from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico, a distance of about 2,000 miles, and return to the north again in the spring. Butterflies cannot fly if their body temperature is less than 86 degrees. Representations of butterflies are seen in Egyptian frescoes at Thebes, which are 3,500 years old. Antarctica is the only continent on which no Lepidoptera have been found. There are about 24,000 species of butterflies. The moths are even more numerous: about 140,000 species of them were counted all over the world. The Brimstone butterfly (Gonepterix rhamni) has the longest lifetime of the adult butterflies: 9-10 months.

A Man shuffled up to the hospital reception desk and asked if it were possible to see Tom Smith. “I am afraid not,” said the nurse on duty, referring to her chart. “Can you tell me, then,” the man asked, “How’s Mr. Smith doing?” “He is doing very well!” the nurse replied. “WHEW! Am I glad to hear that! I’ve been lying in that ward for a week and nobody would tell me a thing. So I got dressed and came down here to find out. I’m Tom Smith.”

When the new neighbors came to call unexpectedly, Mrs. Whiting sent her little daughter in to welcome them. The visitor said to her companion: “She isn’t very p-r-e-t-t-y, is she?” “No,” said the little girl, “but I am s-m-a-r-t.”

History: From the Reader

History

of Soccer

Soccer is one of the most popular sports in Europe and the Americas. It has a vivid and interesting history in the world of sports. Early evidence of soccer being played as a sport finds occurrence in China during the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC. In China, it was during the Han dynasty that people dribbled leather balls by kicking it into a small net. Recorded facts also support the fact that Romans and Greeks used to play ball for fun and frolic. Some facts point to Kyoto in Japan where kicking of ball was a popular sport. It is said that early growth of the modern soccer started in England. Some amusing facts even mention that the first ball used was the head of some Danish brigand. It is said that during medieval times, the old form of soccer used to allow many ill practices like kicking, punching, biting and gouging. The main aim was to carry the ball to a target spot. People grew so fond of the game that they would throng the field all day long. Sometimes the competition grew fierce and masses got so wild that there were frequent incidents of violence during the game. It is also said that soldiers admired the game so much that they missed archery practice to watch it. King Edward III banned soccer in 1365 owing to the growing incidents of violence and military indulgence in the sport. In 1424 King James I of Scotland also proclaimed in the Parliament— "Na man play at the Fute-ball" (No man shall play football) When and where exactly did soccer start is a question that has no precise answer to it. You can easily say that this popular game has been played for more than three thousand years. The nativity of modern-day soccer must be credited to Britain. It was also known as the association football, with Scotland and England being the co-founders of the systematic game of soccer.

Wonders of Creation

Hummingbirds: one of God’s marvelous wonders Hummingbirds are birds that comprise the family Trochilidae. They are among the smallest of birds, most species measuring in the 7.5–13 cm (3–5 in) range. Indeed, the smallest extant bird species is a hummingbird, the 5-cm Bee Hummingbird. They hover in mid-air by rapidly flapping their wings 12–80 times per second (depending on the species). They are known as hummingbirds because of the humming sound created by their beating wings, which sometimes sounds like bees or other insects. A group of hummingbirds is called a "choir." To conserve energy while they sleep or when food is scarce, they have the ability to go into a hibernation-like state (torpor) where their metabolic rate is [1] slowed to 1/15th of its normal rate. When the nights get colder, their body temperature can drop significantly and thus slow down their heart and breathing rate, thus burning much less energy overnight. As the day heats back up, the hummingbird's body temperature will come back up [2] and they resume their normal activity. They are also the only group of [3] birds with the ability to fly backward. They can fly at speeds exceeding [4] 15 m/s (54 km/h; 34 mph). Individuals from some species of hummingbirds weigh less than a penny.

Dan. 2: 16 Then Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would shew the king the interpretation. 17 Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions: 18 That they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven. 20 Daniel answered and said, blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his: 21 And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding: 22 He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him. 23 I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king's matter.

Photography Tips

One of the most basic, overlooked, and fun aspects of photography is that you have the power to slow time down or catch a split second. One image happens so slowly that we could never see it and the other happens so quickly in real time that we would never notice it. Play with shutter speed! Use a slow shutter speed and a tripod to make a pretty picture of any creek or stream. On the other hand, you can use a fast shutter speed (1/500 and up) to capture an object in motion. Combining a fast shutter speed with a long lens, you sports buffs can get a trophy of your own when you are able to catch the expression on your favorite running back’s face as he slips past the final defense toward a winning touchdown. Remember, catching the moment in fast-paced action photography may take a little more practice so hang in there.

SOMETIMES IN LIFE Sometimes in life, you find a special friend; Someone who changes your life just by being part of it. Someone who makes you laugh until you can’t stop; Someone who makes you believe that there really is good in the world. Someone who convinces you that there really is an unlocked door just waiting for you to open it. This is Forever Friendship. When you’re down, and the world seems dark and empty, Your forever friend lifts you up in spirit and makes that dark and empty world suddenly seem bright and full. Your forever friend gets you through the hard times, the sad times, and the confused times. If you turn and walk away, your forever friend follows. If you lose your way, your forever friend guides you and cheers you on. Your forever friend holds your hand and tells you that everything is going to be okay. The way we live in…

Gladys, Virginia I’ve often wondered why my ancestors decided to settle down in this little spot in Virginia when there are so many other beautiful places on the earth. However, it is HOME, and those of us who live here are very happy. One lady who visited the area described it as “twiggy.” And I think that sums it all up! We are surrounded by lots of trees and bush, a wonderful habitat for deer. Yes, there are lots of delighted hunters in the fall! The whippoorwills are my favorite part about living here. I love sitting out on the porch swing after dark to listen to them. Even though Gladys isn’t exactly spectacular itself, we live nearby some very lovely mountains and rivers and etc. It makes for some lovely Sunday hikes and picnics! Now I need to tell you about the TICKS. Believe me, it’s best to stay out of the woods in the summer time. Though sometimes even the yard is impossible to play in without getting them on you. But it’s just something you get use to! We have a fairly large congregation here, and there are around 45 students in school. School is definitely never dull! Right now, everyone is very excited as we are in the beginning stages of building a gym. We just can’t wait to have it completed. Feel free to come visit sometime and see everything for yourself!

49 Cats IN ALL

Stories

Father- Jonathon Fredrick (the 2nd)

My Adopted Sister- Brooklyn Fredrick

Mother- Sara (Gordon) Fredrick Her Brother- Alex Fredrick Older Brother- Bradley Fredrick My brother that died- James Fredrick

My twin- Joshua Fredrick My blue-eyed sister- Krista Me- Matthew Fredrick (also known as matt) Joshua, my twin brother and I were gathering kindling one slushy, April, Kentucky morning when the first of those disgusting-looking, freaky cats appeared. We were only 12 at that time and we thought it was kind of cute - although later, we thought we had lost our minds to even think of keeping an ugly mouse-catcher. Some people said they were the most horrid creatures that ever walked on four feet! Anyhow, back to the story, the calico cat was pitifully crying in one of the trees Mama usually cuts off a switch to make our seats sore. Joshua (the best tree climber in the country) quickly slid up the tree. “You better not tear your britches, or you might wish you had two pairs on,” I yelled as he quickly slid down the tree. The cat was terrified and desperately wanted to go. “Ha! It would be a relief to get rid of these itchy corn sacks,” Joshua sassed back as he scratched his hind legs. “Say, I got an idea!” I said in a low voice, “First of all, let’s bring the cat to the barn.” The cat was as wet as a rain in December and as dirty as Mama’s white linens when they get pulled off the wash line by Polo. After we had cleaned and dried the cat, I said, “Brookie’s birthday is next month and we don’t have a gift.”

“that’s a great idea!” “Don’t tell anyone,” I warned.

Stories

“You think I’m that stupid?” “Course not!” “Then why did you say that?” “’Cause I wanted to.” “Humph, I think you’re stupid,” he said. “Oh yea!” I shouted, “I’m smarter ‘cause I was born first.” “So? I was born a few seconds ‘for you, and ‘sides, my name is longer.” Joshua bragged. I told him that didn’t make a bit of difference, and maybe I as well ought to have talked to a tree.

Just then Bradley poked his head in and announced that it was time for breakfast and what in the world was taking so long ‘cause he was starvin‘! Joshua and I glared at each other the whole way through the meal. Mama noticed and sighed and said if we didn’t buckle up right away, we’d have to wash dishes all week. Four-year-old Alex giggled quietly. Little Alex was a quiet, solemn, little dark-haired fellow and I rather liked him because of it. Brooklyn turned eight on that birthday and our argument seemed long ago and it didn’t really matter. We had kept the cat in the barn loft which was filled with hay. It was a very comfortable place. Some of Brooks’ giggly girlfriends were there and so were Uncle Matt and Aunt Arianna and their children. Amy, the oldest, then came Adrianna, she’s my age and she’s the only girl I ever liked besides Brook. Karianana is the next in the line. She and Brooke have been friends since, well, I don’t know when. All I know is if I’m ever a Father, I want to have more boys than that.

Stories

Uncle James was also there. He’s Father’s brother and an old bachelor, and he’s the best hunter and trapper in these parts. Uncle James is one of those big, fat well actually as skinny as a corn stalk, jolly bachelors that don’t need a woman to cook all his food. He loves telling us gruesome stories of all his hunting expeditions where he almost starved to death and lived on cooked leather, or when all he had was his fingernails to chew on. After we had eaten a delicious meal, I mysteriously said, “Brookie, go look in the barn loft!” She and her friends scrambled up the ladder, trying to reach it before the others. About a hundred different delighted squeals were heard as the girls tried to hold it at once. I was afraid they might pull all the hair off. “Don’t hold the kittens,” Brooke commanded. “There to small.” All the breath went out of me. My eye balls felt like they were gonna pop right out! Joshua looked pretty much the same. We both raced up the ladder at the same time, almost falling off both ends. Sure enough, four little brand-new fluffy gray kittens were curled up in the hay! I kinda thought they looked like the baby rats we had hid in Bradley’s socks the other week, but of course I didn’t say so. Brooke suddenly flung her arms around me and Josh. “Matthew and Joshua, you’re the best brothers in the whole wide world,” she said. She even kissed us! I was as embarrassed as fat Mrs. Pigins when she fell into a mud-puddle in town, but all I wanted to do was to run away as fast as I could. All the girls were looking at us in a way that would want to make you shiver, and fall out of your skin, then and there! You can be sure Joshua and I got out of there pretty quickly. After that, we played lots of outside games. As evening came, we lit a bonfire and Father and Uncle James played the guitar and we sang along. Joshua and I could hear Brooke from the other room reciting names to herself. That night I dreamed a circle of girls were walking in a circle around me and they each held a calico cat.

Stories

The next couple weeks whenever I saw Brooke, she was playing with Lilac the calico cat. Joshua and I were personally shocked! Why in the hairy worldwould you call a cat, Lilac? The other names were OK though. Pussy and Willow (the kittens) were growing up fast, so Brooke said. Do you remember me mentioning the name Polo? Well, he was a stray dog that we had found. All he is a mutt and a pain in the neck. I usually like dogs, but….not this kind. Polo hated the cats the moment he saw them. And, I must add, the cats despised him. For instance, Polo always thinks he’s the strongest because he‘s the biggest. One day he decided to show off a bit and he poofed out his chest at the cats and growled. Well, I guess the cats didn’t like that to well. They jumped and clawed madly. You could hear Polo crying a mile away. You’d think Polo wouda had sense enough to stay away from cats after that. No sirree, he kept on pestering them and Joshua or I would have to untangle the mess because poor Polo would always loose. ~*~*~*~ One Sunday afternoon, we went to the Johnsons farm. They had the most beautiful dogs and I think that visit had a lot of effect on me. Every day after that I thought and dreamed about owning a special kind of dog. Mama would say I was in lulu land. I think Joshua was also affected. Every night afterward we would discuss the possibility of owning a dog. The problem was, we couldn’t decide which kind we wanted. Immediately, I was sure a German shepherd was the kind we needed. But, alas! Josiah demanded upon a Golden Retriever! We argued like two birds trying to find a perfect place to lay their eggs. We finally sought upon Uncle James to tell us which dog was better. Uncle James lived far back in the woods. He said he thought that was the only place of peace and quiet and where we live it’s as busy as an ant hill. Mama thinks totally opposite, she says it’s as lonely as a deserted Indian camp. When we reached his house, we asked as fast as the words could come out of our mouths. He just turned around and started splittin’ with laughter. I couldn’t understand it! Big help he was. Josiah and I just shrugged our shoulders and started to leave.

Stories

Once Uncle James had gotten hold of himself, he quickly said, “Just a second. I got something for you.” He brought us a book called Stories of Dogs. All he said was, “You just read that book. Who knows, it might help!” Then he started chuckling again to himself like a big, hairy monster laughing over his catch. We could still hear him laughing when we came out of the woods! The only books I had ever read were books from school or books we sometimes borrowed from the Mc Grays which is three miles away. The only books they had were Bibles. I usually didn’t think reading was necessary or fun but this book looked rather interesting. I almost started to read before we got home but Josiah wouldn’t let me, and neither of us were allowed to read when we reached home. Mama told Josh to run an errand and I had to help father with the livestock. We had cows as stinky as a cow can be, Mama’s chickens (pesky old brats), two beautiful horses, a few snorty pink (Maybe I should have said brown) pigs, and of course, the six goats. The pigs were thankfully Brook’s responsibility. Joshua took care of the chickens, and we men did the rest. Father and I were milking the cows when he said, “What have you been up to today?” I always liked milking with Father. It seemed like the only time of the day I could decently talk to him. “ Oh, me and Josiah went to Uncle James’ cabin,” was my reply. I wanted to tell him about our dog wishing, but before I could get to that he said, “I saw you carrying something home.” “That was a book Uncle James let me and Josiah borrow,” I explained. “Oh?” he asked.

Then the whole story tumbled out as fast as brake time at school.

Stories

Hmmm,” was what he said. Then he shook his head, “Sorry son, if you and Josh really want a dog, then you’ll have to make the money yourself; although I really wish I could help.” “That’s alright father,” I forced myself to say. I really hadn’t thought he would help pay for it but I still had had my hopes high, “We can make the money I’m sure.” I tried to sound cheerful, but inside of me, I was as sad as a hunter when he doesn’t catch one single animal the whole year. As soon as the chores were done, I whisked up my favorite oak tree with the book and soon I was in doggie land. I was so caught up in the book that I didn’t hear Mama ring the dinner bell. By now, I was done with the fourth chapter and was already convinced that a Husky was the dog I wanted. Pretty soon, my stomach told me it was nigh time to eat and I hurried down the tree and ran to the kitchen door. When I opened the door, I was as surprised as a chicken that just got sprayed. The whole family (except for me that is) was sitting around the table eating solemnly. I guess the shocked look on my face was too much for them to restrain and they all laughed - little Alex laughed the hardest. The next day Josiah read the book and declared a Chou was the kind of dog we were going to have. I couldn’t believe it! Chou’s were nice dogs but I thought a Husky was a lot better. So once again we went to Uncle James’ cabin and told him we still didn’t agree. His face just suddenly got as red as a sun burnt alligator and he quickly held up his handkerchief to blow his nose. I knew full well he was laughing and I just wasn’t in the mood for laughing. It seemed like whenever I saw Uncle James, he was laughing!

Feature

What you'll need:       

Smooth, round or oval rocks, washed and dried Acrylic craft paint in colors of our choice Black acrylic craft paint 2 wiggle eyes for each ladybug Black permanent marker Acrylic matte sealer spray White craft glue (recommended: Tacky Glue)

How to make it: 1.Completely wash and dry all rocks. 2.Paint rocks in desired colors, allow to dry. Apply second and third coats if needed. Lighter colors will require more coats than darker shades. 3.Paint head on using black acrylic craft paint. There is no pattern needed, simply paint about ¼ of the rock black in the "front." 4.Use a black permanent marker to draw a straight line down the center of the rock, starting at the center of the base of the "head." 5.Dip the end of a large paint brush, or the eraser of a pencil, in black craft paint. Dot on the spots, reloading with paint after every dot. 6.Once the paint is dry, spray the rock(s) with acrylic sealer
