PADEL: our history

P

lanning to build a tennis court in his villa in Acapulco and considering the walls next to the space available to design the court, in 1969 a Mexican named Enrique Corcuera came up with the idea of considering the walls as part and parcel of the game itself. Alongside a friend of his, Corcuera went ahead to regulate the new game and called it “padel”.

A

s a game, padel is beneficial to all sportsmen: it can be a source of fun or just a chance to meet and “get-together”; at the same time it can be a valid motor activity without entailing aggressive movements to keep fit; it can be a practical activity for the entire family; it can be gratifying in terms of sporting performance. Basically, it is played under tennis rules.

Why invest in padel? Because it is the sport of THE MOMENT worldwide!

1

The foremost and most important reason to consider investing in padel lies in the fact that this is a futuristic game/sport and it is the sport of the moment in 34 countries worldwide with more than 20 million players due to the fact that it is pretty “social a sport and easy to play. Anyone can become a decent player in no time.

2

The second reason lies in the fact that it is less demanding as compared to other sports investments money-wise, with a more immediate and rewarding return on investment. A 300 sqm piece of land is all you need to build 1 court alongside the respective dressing rooms. However, it is advisable to build at least 2 courts in order to optimise the investment! Besides leasing the courts, profitability comes through accessory services, such as: cafeterias, merchandising, lessons, tournaments etc...

O

ITALIAN PADEL: by Forgiafer

ur history, as FORGIAFER, dates back to 1991 when Claudio Galuppini, a twenty-four-year-old back then, invested his entire payoff, amounting to 2,800,000 Lire (approximately 1,400.00 €) to buy a welding machine and a cutter to be used in the 100 sqm workshop. In 1993, he met Aldo Carati, the “wrought iron master”, who - at 83 years of age - taught him some hand forging tricks. His ambition and drive led Galuppini to realising that modern machinery and hand forging tricks were a perfect blend to enable creating an unprecedented product! And thus, after the coke forge and the first leaf spring hammer, investments aimed at upgrading the company for the automated manufacturing of forged components began in the 90s. The year 2000 marked troubled times. Having perceived that China would have invaded the forged products market had Galuppini at a crossroads: either downsize massively or take a different route by building new sheds and buying new machinery. Committing to “major” investments faced with the prospect of a potentially shrinking market or cut costs downsizing the company? After sleepless nights, Galuppini decided that considering the figures at hand, all odds were stacked against him! Putting all on the line but encouraged by his considerations, he embarked on that project he had shelved for years: innovatively manufacturing standardised gates. Though his was a utopian and risky idea and there was no market back then, his resolute will and far-seeing spirit prevailed giving forth the new project. The new premises were built and automations created, progressively letting go the share of turnover from forged products which were progressively replaced by income from selling the gates. In the next few years the company overcame odds becoming a leader player in the Italian standardised gates manufacturing industry, with 60 employees and manufacturing 3,000 gates and 75 km of enclosures per year. Today, these figures have soared above 40,000 gates and 800 km of enclosures. After years of highly rewarding efforts in terms of turnover, the 2008 construction industry crisis bent and tightened its stranglehold on the company forcing it into massive retrenchment in the wake of a 68% turnover drop. This spelt a seemingly bleak future and the inherent problems cast dark clouds over the future of the company. Galuppini decided he would not back down and as resolute as ever, he made huge sacrifices and persisted in manufacturing gates and rails, but with the idea of finding a new product to launch in the market. Quirks of fate, of which Galuppini is a staunch believer, came to his rescue and he stumbled on padel in October 2015. This sport breathed fresh life into the company by manufacturing padel court facilities. A department dedicated to product research and development was set up and Galuppini invested 90% of his work time in designing, innovating and reconverting productive facilities. The first two courts were built under the new ITALIAN PADEL brand and the platform was approved to host padel courts, used at Foro Italico in Rome for the 2016 ITALIAN OPEN and Italian Masters tournaments. 2017 marked the actual start of production of Italian Padel, supplying many of the courts built across Italy in a very short time. Awards and accolades from players and trainers worldwide confirmed that Galuppini was on the right track and strengthened his drive to join the international market. As a matter fact, in 2018 Forgiafer is gearing up to step into the international market, where the frenzy around padel is raging on, exploiting its organisation and numerous robotised systems covering its 26,000 sqm surface area housing 12,000 sqm of sheds, split between production, painting, warehouse and showroom. The company boasts of a 500 courts/year production potential, claiming a place among the largest builders of padel courts in Europe. 6

From the coke forge to Europe’s largest BUILDER OF PADEL COURTS... What they say about us: SPORTING CLUB LE BANDIERE COLTURANO - (MI) 4 indoor courts and 2 outdoor courts

“In the wake of success of padel after the first 4 courts were built, in March 2017 we decided to build 2 new courts. Given the wanting service and delivery times offered by the previous supplier from abroad, we looked for a new supplier focusing on the Italian market. I must admit that Italian Padel seemed very serious and efficient right from the start and our expectations were confirmed once through with assembling our courts. This is an “old-school” company in which the owner strives to fully meet the customer's demands. We are very happy with the Italian Padel courts and recommend anyone planning to build a court to set up an appointment and pay this company a visit. It is really worth it!” Daniele Guglielmetti

“Italian Padel builds extraordinary, extremely solid and resistant courts. The glasses respond very well and the structure is as good as they come; furthermore, beauty also counts and Italian padel got it all right. My carrier has taken me across many courts and I must admit that yours can easily compete both in the global and European market in terms of resistance and beauty. I really recommend it to all. Furthermore, I had the chance to visit the company and witness your professionalism at work and this is truly superb”.

BASIC is the most appropriate approach to the world of padel, especially for centres that would like to cut on the initial investment on their first attempt on this sport. Albeit the super competitive price, Italian Padel did not save on the quality of the details, materials used and safety within the playing court.

Crucial tips for

optimal set up of a court Platform and perimeter edging

VERY IMPORTANT!!

The first point, one of the most important for correct set up, is to create a platform and/or perimeter edging, compliant with the project requirements and design features.

These works must not have any imperfections such as depressions and/or bumps that could create construction problems or alter the bouncing of the ball.

Artificial grass turf In conjunction with world-class trainers and players, Italian Padel selected 6 types of turfs, after analysis and tests carried out on more than 30 models assessed from among: fibrillated, single-strand or curled single-strand with height varying between 10 and 16 mm. Thanks to this wide range we can choose the degree of elasticity (or, alternatively, of flexibility) and the speed we strive to achieve in our court.

A court should last more than 20 years

The fact that padel is in its early stages in Italy and the absence of major industrial players have created grounds for construction of products with questionable durability and quality given that they immediately show clear signs of deterioration that is unlikely to be fix.

✘ AFTER 2 YEARS

Imagine buying a new car. And seeing it rusting away in a few months. How would you feel? All courts appear very nice when buying but it is just a matter of a few months or years before raw or partly galvanised products start showing signs of aesthetic and structural defects! How will these courts look like in 3/5 years? And which are the entailed risks? Problems arising due to structures subject of rusting or corrosion due to humidity, seepage, heat excursions and condensate cannot be solved through surface treatments and are bound to deteriorate inexorably.

Useless risks?

We do not like taking chances. And we do not want you taking any either. That is why we supply certiďŹ ed products only. N.B. The liabilities of a manager and/or owner go beyond constructing a court. They actually continue over the entire life cycle which should last at least 15/20 years. Due to its constant and progressive deterioration, rust exposes tubular structures to potential collapse or yielding due to atmospheric agents or accidental thrust without any early warning or clear signs of yielding.

As concerns long duration products, no reasonable man would expose those closest to him (the players) to such risks just to save a little!!! 26
