ACTIVITY KIT
WELCOME Turn your imagination on intrepid explorers and sail with us on a voyage across the sea where you will see strange sights, meet neighbours from different lands and even encounter an angry sea monster.
TASK 1
You will be sailing to faraway lands. Draw the boat you need here. Give your boat a name.
TASK 2
FIRST ENCOUNTER You have been sailing for a number of days when a storm washes your boat into a bay. You are shaken by the storm and decide to venture ashore and explore. It’s there that you meet one of the island’s inhabitants. He is curious about you and you are amazed by his colourful clothes and different customs. You are eager to know more about him. He explains that you have landed on the island of Plasticology.
Help us come up with information about your new friend. What is his name? Why is his island called Plasticology? Where is all the plastic coming from? What do they do with all the plastic? What does he eat? What does he do for fun? What do you notice about his clothes? Draw the island where he lives.
TASK 3
CHALLENGE
There are so many things to see on the island. But can you spot these four things? Go and explore the exhibition online with this URL https://youtu.be/05myFCLZajA and tick the circle when you find them.

ON TO OUR ADVENTURE The man who welcomed you onto the island is a famous inventor. He is keen for you to help him come up with some new and exciting inventions. Let’s go...
TASK 4
INVENTION TIME!
OBJECT 1
YOUR INVENTION
WHAT DID YOU USE?
Our inventor friend has a challenge for you. Firstly, watch the exhibition online and look closely at the artworks. Some of the artwork contains everyday household objects. Pick two of the everyday objects from the artwork and draw them in the top boxes. Then, combine the two objects to make a new invention. For example, a balloon and backpack could combine to make a jetpack. OBJECT 2
TASK 5
THIS IS A RADIO ANNOUNCEMENT The inventor is so excited about your idea. He wants you to tell the island community about it and has invited you to tell them all about it on the radio. Jot down a few things they need to know about your new invention:
What is the name of your new invention?
What would people use it for?
What does it do?
Why is it needed?
WHAT WAS THAT LOUD NOISE? WE’D BETTER GO AND FIND OUT...
TASK 6
OH NO, LET’S HELP! You hear a loud strange noise directly behind you. The inventor knows the noise instantly! He explains that there is a giant sea monster that often threatens the island. His body is made from all the plastic that ends up in the sea. You feel sorry for the monster, he seems rather sad. Help us work out why he is so angry? WHY IS HE SO ANGRY?
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP THE SEA MONSTER AND THE PEOPLE ON THE ISLAND TO GET ALONG BETTER?
WHY SHOULD WE BE KIND TO OTHERS?
TASK 7 Use the next page to draw what the angry monster looks like
TASK 8
YOU DID IT! The island’s news reporter was so impressed with how you helped them with the sea monster. She would like to interview you for the local news paper so the whole island can read about it. Tell her what

Where were you when you first saw the sea monster?
What was the monster upset about?
What did you do to help?
What happened in the end?
TASK 9
WHAT IS YOUR PLEDGE? 12 million tonnes of plastic enters the ocean every year. That is a giant sea monster sized problem! Can you help us stop so much plastic going into the sea? We would like your class to make a PLASTIC FREE PLEDGE. In the small box below draw something made from plastic that you currently use often. Perhaps it’s a plastic straw or a single use plastic drink bottle. Make a pledge to make a change. When you get back to the classroom you can cut your drawing out and make a class pledge. See how many plastic items you you can go without for a month.
I PLEDGE NOT TO USE:
IT’S PEOPLE LIKE YOU WHO CAN CHANGE THE WORLD.
