Fresh off the plane from Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2017, the Djuki Mala dancers are performing live and free at the 2017 Hedland Art Awards opening night. With a Doctorate in Creative Arts, Ric Spencer is a curator, academic, arts writer and artist in his own right. His more recent posts include arts critic for The West Australian and lecturer at Curtin University. Ric has exhibited in Australia, Asia and the UK and has been published in Australian, UK and American journals.
EMILIA GALATIS
Curator, Writer
Freelance writer and curator Emilia Galatis has accrued extensive experience working with Indigenous artists and art centres both as manager of Warakurna Artists in the Great Victorian Desert, and as curator of Fremantle Arts Centre’s Revealed exhibitions.
TARRYN GILL
Artist
Multi-disciplinary artist Tarryn Gill has exhibited nationally and internationally, as well as received numerous accolades such as the 2016 Bankwest Art Award. Tarryn’s work spans photography and three-dimensional media. Her unique, other-worldly sculptures often incorporate textiles, lighting and sound components to wield immersive, theatrical experiences. Tarryn is no stranger to the Pilbara; in 2013 she completed a residency in Marble Bar, resulting in the group exhibition Bedazzle, which toured to the Courthouse Gallery.

The Hedland Art Awards festivities continue on the Saturday afternoon, with the West End Markets: Visual Art Edition. The Markets will feature your favourite makers and crafters, food vendors and roving entertainment as well as special guest visiting stallholders Mulla Mulla Designs, Magpie Goose, Robin Wells Jewellery, Old Grey House and Eucalypt Homewares. There will also be a number of artwork market stalls from Aboriginal art centres exhibiting as part of the Hedland Art Awards. Local singers Rose & Lang will keep the crowds entertained during the afternoon and evening; and we haven’t forgotten the kids! In addition to the usual offerings such as face painting and roving performers, we’ll also have a special kid’s craft activity facilitated by A Pom Pom A Day. MULLA MULLA DESIGNS Established artist Helen Ansell is the one half of the team behind Mulla Mulla Designs, creating textiles, homewares and art prints inspired by Western Australia. Her abstract yet recognisable prints are bright, contemporary and will complement any home.
MAGPIE GOOSE Magpie Goose is a fashion social enterprise that takes inspiration from Aboriginal art and designs. Just like its namesake, Magpie Goose is bright, bold and unapologetic! VISITING ABORIGINAL ARTS CENTRE STALLHOLDERS In this latest instalment of the West End Markets we’re thrilled to be hosting a number of Aboriginal Art Centres from Western Australia, including:
Port Hedland’s only Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art centre, the Spinifex Hill Artists are relatively new to the scene, starting out in 2008 and opening their studio in 2014 in partnership with BHP. The artists produce a range of works from traditional to contemporary art, all sharing stories from the Pilbara region. MARTUMILI ARTISTS Spanning four different language groups and six communities across the east Pilbara, the Martumili Artists studio is based in Newman. Their artists work between Newman and Port Hedland, and have exhibited nationally including the current exhibition Songlines: Tracking the Seven Sisters in Canberra. CHEEDITHA ART GROUP Based in Roebourne, the Cheeditha Art Group consists of members of the Cheeditha community located just outside Roebourne. They specialise in glasswares which are handmade by their artists, as well as selling artworks and accessories of their own design.
OLD GREY HOUSE Old Grey House create beautiful handmade linen for the home, including pillowcases, tablerunners and napkins.
MOWANJUM ABORIGINAL ART & CULTURE CENTRE Representing the Worrorra, Ngarinyin and Wunumbal tribes, who make up the Mowanjum community, the Mowanjum Aboriginal Art & Culture Centre is based in Derby. As the custodians of Wandjina law and iconography, their work tells the stories of the Wandjina as a sacred spiritual force and creators of the land. 11

DJUKI MALA Exciting and amusing for the whole family, Djuki Mala are an award winning dance group who have performed throughout Australia and internationally, including a recent performances at Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Their electric performances combine traditional Yolngu dance with contemporary pop culture.
A POM POM A DAY KIDS PLAY STATION Join Jen from A Pom Pom a Day, one of our visiting stallholders as they host a creative and fun craft stall, which will teach kids new art and craft techniques, as well as develop fine motor skills and broaden their creative minds.
ROVING STILT WALKERS Be awestruck by our colourful and friendly roving stilt walkers, who will be wandering the markets looking to make new friends! JAZ IT UP FACE PAINTING Jaz the Fairy is a family favourite, transforming faces into fairies, unicorns, dragons and superheroes. This free activity is a fantastic way to keep kids entertained, and we suggest getting in early to avoid the queues. 13

Session One:
FROM THE IDEA TO THE SHELF Explore the steps involved in developing your idea for a product, assessing its viability in the market, and developing and testing a prototype. From production to pricing, packaging and promotion, we’ll provide examples of a number of products remote communities have developed including earrings, hand dyed silk scarves and gift cards. While this session is relevant for all creative businesses, it will be particularly useful for Aboriginal art centre staff.
Session Two:
TALES FROM A CREATIVE START-UP the journey of Magpie Goose Ideal for everyone in business or creative industries, this session will use real life examples and learnings from over the last 12 months, through the development and launch of Magpie Goose, a Northern Territory-based fashion label, to cover the themes of product development, market research, viability assessment, proof of concept, brand development, raising capital, marketing and public relations, and sales and distribution.

Listen to artists talking about their working methods, and you will quickly realise that there are as many ways to create, as there are artists. There is no right or wrong way. Join Albany-based abstract photographer, Meleah Farrell as she shares her ideas and insights into her own creative processes, including free, opportunistic shooting approaches to more self-assigned or project-driven ideas. Learn how setting goals and challenges and throwing convention out the window help Meleah fuel her creativity. This session will also include an introduction to the photographic techniques of ‘Multiple Exposure Photography’ and ‘Intentional Camera Movement’. Have fun using these if you are attending our Saturday’s tour of the Burrup Peninsula or in any of your other photographic pursuits. 21

The 2017 Artist Camp will offer participants the opportunity to learn creative processes from photographer Meleah Farrell and clay and silver jeweller Julie Holmes-Reid. As a participant you will learn new creative approaches, techniques and methods to kick start your own artworks, designs and photographs, while learning specific new skills and techniques. The camp is located on the beautiful town of Dampier, and will include an Aboriginal cultural tour of the worldrenowned Burrup Peninsula with Ngarluma, Yindjibarndi tour guide Clinton Walker.

ARTIST MENTOR PROFILES
MELEAH FARRELL: Abstract photographer Meleah Farrell focuses on capturing the ‘special’ in the ‘everyday’. Her work is inspired by nature and, based in Albany, she is never short of ideas or subject matter. She has worked in the Pilbara before, participating in the 2016 Artist Camp in Karijini, teaching the art of solar printing and polaroid emulsion lift.
JULIE HOLMES-REID: Julie Holmes is a contemporary jeweller and the maker behind the brand Meraki Designs, which is sold in the Courthouse Gallery store. Tribal and ancient cultures and their customs are the main influence of her work. Textures, patterns and markings in clay and metals are handcrafted by Julie with imperfections celebrated. An emphasis of showing the makers hand is an integral part of Julie’s work.

AFTERNOON SESSION OPTIONS
Guided tour of Burrup Peninsula 9 – 11am Artist camp participants will be taken on a tour with Ngurrangga Tours guide Clinton Walker through the Murujuga National Park, which has the highest concentration of rock art in the world. This tour will be used as source of inspiration for the work produced during the camp, so please bring your notebooks and cameras along to record any ideas.
1 – 5pm Review, edit and preparation of images with Meleah Farrell After downloading and reflecting on your experiences during the morning’s Burrup Peninsula tour, participate in a group feedback session led by Meleah. Gain a deeper perspective and learn about how you can improve the visual strength of your images. Apply any final editing touches and learn how to prepare your chosen images for printing in readiness to use in our Photo Transfer to Wax workshop tomorrow. Investigation into the properties of air dry clay with Julie Holmes-Reid Reflecting on the formations and shape noted in the Burrup Peninsula tour, participants will firstly form simple pinch pots using air dry clay. These give makers a really good understanding of how to work with clay and to get the feel of the clay. You will have the opportunity to investigate markings in clay, imprints from nature and other found objects. Create shapes and forms to investigate possibilities of integrating clay with other materials, and learn simple slab building techniques.

In this session, explore the potential of combining photography and encaustic wax, creating original, ethereal and creative artworks. Learn ink transfer processes and how to embellish photographs with layers of beeswax – adding interest and depth. This workshop is playful, experimental and the results will excite you.
Fibre, fabric and wire with Julie Holms-Reid Participants will be given the opportunity to use various fibres and fabrics combining with wire and clay pieces to form objects. CRAFT AFTER DARK Book Launch Thursday 16 November | 5:30 – 8pm Courthouse Gallery | FREE Join visiting artist Kitiya Palaskas as she launches her new book Piñata Party! Kitiya is one of Australia’s leading makers and creatives, specialising in prop and installation design, styling, art direction, creative workshop facilitation and DIY content production. She’ll also be holding a craft station where you can learn to create your own mini-pinata to take home.

Kitiya Palaskas is an Australian craftbased designer with a multi-disciplinary practice. She specialises in prop and installation design, styling, art direction, creative workshop facilitation and DIY content production; focusing primarily on using handmade techniques and traditional craft methods re-imagined in a contemporary way. Kitiya’s work is characterised by its bold colours, kitsch themes and humorous nature and has spanned the retail, music, advertising and publishing industries. Her clients have included Warner Music, Sportsgirl, Lego, Easy, ANZ Bank, Peter Alexander and Lily Allen, amongst others. 29

Start the morning with a hot breakfast hosted by the team at Yarrie Meats, before jumping into our drop-in craft workshop where you can make your own hanging mobile. Kids can personalise their cardboard shapes with textas, crayons, stickers and stamps and create their own collection of shapes for a truly unique artwork. Families can enjoy the summer morning and join in on garden games, face painting or explore the Hedland Art Awards exhibition and get a head start on their Christmas shopping.

Creating art means creating copyright. Copyright is an important asset of creators that gives them legal rights and opportunities to generate income irrespective of the ownership of their physical creation, and irrespective even whether that creation still exists. Join ArtsLaw CEO Robyn Ayres as she walks you through owning and using your copyright, knowing your moral rights as well as creating copyright with other people. This session uses practical examples, case studies from artists’ experiences and hypothetical scenarios to help make copyright accessible and, dare we say, fun for creatives. This session is relevant to all creatives and artists across all art forms. 33
