NORTH WEST ECONOMIC SUMMIT

PORT HEDLAND THE NEXT TIDE Driving regional growth and prosperity - Friday, 21 August 2015

North West Economic Summit Designed and delivered by Town of Port Hedland.

“The fuel source for growth in an advanced economy is no longer land, minerals or water. The fuel source of a modern economy is ideas. That’s because ideas are how industry achieves more output for the same or fewer inputs.” Dr Stefan Hajkowicz, CSIRO

“NO LONGER WILL NORTHERN AUSTRALIA BE SEEN AS THE LAST FRONTIER: IT IS IN FACT, THE NEXT FRONTIER” The Northern Australia White Paper

A REGION IN FOCUS Excerpt from The Northern Australia White Paper No longer will Northern Australia be seen as the last frontier: it is in fact, the next frontier. Australia is unique among the developed countries of the world in that we sit at the intersection of the two great regions of global economic and population growth – the Asian region and the Tropical region. The Tropical region encompasses everything between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn and includes 40 per cent of the world’s population. The rise of these regions, underpinned by a set of global macro-trends, will create significant opportunities for Northern Australia to capitalise on its strengths and unlock major economic value. This growth will ultimately create new jobs, greater income and better prospects for all Australians. The paper proposes that by 2030 Northern Australia could drive growth by: •

developing a food bowl, including premium produce, which could help to double Australia’s agricultural output;

growing the tourist economy in the North to two million international tourists annually;

building an energy export industry worth $150 billion to the economy, with a major focus on clean and efficient energy, providing major increases to resource exports.

Buy-in by investors will be essential. In this regard, the main task for government should be, largely, to create the right climate and environment to encourage the establishment of viable enterprises, not to direct or be the principal financier of development. In doing so, it must follow strict requirements and key performance indicators to deliver strong outcomes.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS JOHN STANLEY Recent years have seen a huge change in community development around the world. Those changes are going to continue at a rapid pace. Consumers today are looking for weekday convenience and a weekend experience and it is up to the business community to establish an experience for the consumer. If they fail, the community will look to other sources and that may be outside the existing community. In John’s travels he is seeing three community models: •

Ghost towns: These are towns that have not kept up with the changing consumer and as a result local consumers and tourists have deserted them, leaving a ghost town.

Clone towns: These are towns that look the same around the world. The character of the town has been lost and although the consumer shops there it is not a place of choice.

Home Towns: These are communities that engage with the local consumer and with tourists and are developing and evolving communities.

The future is in the Home town, the challenge is developing a Home Town. As a keynote presentation John paints the picture for the delegates, as a workshop John works with the group to develop plans and a strategy for the communities involved. The e-book is a follow up for the presentation and the workshop.
