THE GOODS SHED
2018 PROGRAM JANUARY—JUNE
A literature and arts festival for young people. Exhibitions. Workshops. Creative Learning. Artist residencies. Large-scale ephemeral installations that respond to the Western Australian landscape. Community events. From the Pilbara to Perth, and from The Goods Shed to the Great Southern, FORM’s agenda for the first six months of 2018 is full of ways to stimulate creative exchange, and offer opportunities to people of all ages to join in. FORM Gallery in the city, and Port Hedland’s Courthouse Gallery in the north continue to offer exciting encounters with art, through exhibitions and public programs featuring the work of international, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal artists, while FORM’s regional activity (involving artist residencies, stunning installations and more giant murals on silos) focuses on the Pilbara and the Great Southern. At The Goods Shed in Claremont, a creative hub for Perth and beyond, the focus falls on helping everyone-and particularly students and teachers-to share in creative learning experiences, with the launch of Scribblers, a brand new annual festival of literature and arts. We will also welcome back popular events such as the Flour Market’s West Coast Bake. And don’t forget, The Goods Shed’s coffee pod serves delicious coffee and snacks, seven days a week. Read on for forthcoming highlights in FORM’s program. Whether you’re city-based or live in the regions, we hope to see you at one of our events or venues soon.

Winner of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Award for the 2017 ‘As We Are’ Art Awards, Gloria’s loose brushwork and pastel palettes have attracted critical attention for their highly affecting presence. THE GOODS SHED INternational RESIDENCY:
PAUL COLLARD Everyone’s futures lie in the hands of developing generations, and will depend on how young people navigate the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly technical and arguably less human-centred world. It is important to steer society’s expectations away from traditional pathways to traditional employment in order to embrace a more holistic and creative approach to our children’s future and their prospective occupations.
FORM’s Creative Learning program introduces children and teachers to an innovative learning process: the intentional development, through creativity, of the understanding, capacity, knowledge and skills which can equip young people to negotiate a rapidlychanging world. Paul Collard (UK) is an expert in this approach, launching the program with FORM in 2016. Since then, students and their teachers have come to The Goods Shed to participate in workshops run by artists, performers and writers, and to explore their creative and sensory responses to the building, its surroundings, its history and its contents. Paul returns for another month-long residency to work closely with Perth’s young people, and share his knowledge with their parents, carers and educators.

This October, FORM brings to WA an ephemeral art installation by acclaimed British artist Bruce Munro, illuminating Albany’s Mt Clarence with 13,000 shining lights to honour the Anzacs who departed from Albany for the Great War. The immersive artwork will reference the national flowers of Australia and New Zealand; honouring 100 years since the First World War’s end and celebrating Albany’s unique biodiversity with thousands of lights shining in the whites, yellows and golds of the wattle and the kowhai. As part of his preparation, Bruce will briefly visit Western Australia in March before coming back to oversee installation in the spring.

Undesirable Bodies, Pilar Mata Dupont, film still, 2018.
Pilar Mata Dupont is renowned internationally for using highly theatrical and cinematic methods to investigate history and humanity. Jirndawurrunha, an area of the Pilbara’s Millstream Chichester National Park sacred to the Yindjibarndi people, is under threat. Weeds threaten the environment, while a tourist economy grows uneasily in this hauntingly beautiful location. Mata Dupont examines the legacies of colonisation through stunning photographs and video, and unfolds a story of invasion and conservation as lyrical as it is unsettling.

FORM is continuing to take PUBLIC to the regions. In March, another huge silo artwork - this time in Albany - will join three existing monumental murals in Northam, Ravensthorpe and Merredin as part of the PUBLIC Silo Trail that FORM is producing in partnership with CBH Group, the State’s largest grain handler. Selected artists will also create art on electrical transformer boxes in partnership with Western Power and will run a series of skill development workshops for Albany youths with a local youth development organisation. More artists will be appointed to paint silos in the final two locations at soon to be announced locations. This cultural tourism trail connects regional towns by a common thread of art on an epic scale, while a year-long social documentary project called Homegrown Stories will catalogue the lives of regional Australians in film and story. The entire project aims to help build the reputation of participating towns State-wide, and encourage connection, and boost opportunities for economic growth.

Gloria (WA)
Paul Collard is CEO of Culture & Creativity in Education (CCE), a global organisation dedicated to unlocking the creativity of children and young people in and out of formal education. Is your child inquisitive, imaginative, persistent, disciplined and collaborative? These ‘good habits of mind’ are what FORM aims to encourage as part of our Creative Learning program: bespoke workshops for students of all ages. In particular we look at the role of arts and culture in connecting people, community cohesiveness and giving people a sense of place and identity. We’re offering opportunities to explore the artworks of FORM’s exhibitions in ways which relate to the curriculum. Most workshops are free but must be booked in advance. Please contact Lamis Sabra on learning@form.net.au for more information and bookings.
About FORM FORM is an independent organisation which for over a decade has been working to build ‘a state of creativity’ in Western Australia. We’ve created platforms for debate and action on culture and art and the essential role they play in enhancing everyone’s quality of life. However it is manifested, whether as a huge mural or an inspiring talk, we believe that everyone responds to creativity; it sparks further conversation, learning and connection, and often significant economic return. We know this because we’ve introduced creative people from Australia and all over the world into communities where there has been a hunger not only for self-expression but also for social bonding. We’ve seen the difference creativity can make, how people and places can flourish, how government and business can be influenced by the results it can achieve. From making a neighbourhood feel welcoming and distinctive to finding our own aptitude and ambitions, creativity allows us to demand more of our relationships with our environments, our communities, ourselves and each other. That’s why we work in the Pilbara, in the Great Southern, in other regions and in Perth, and why in 2016 we repurposed a heritage railway building to establish Western Australia’s newest creative hub, The Goods Shed in Claremont.
