THE GOODS SHED
VISION Constructed in the early 1900’s, the Goods Shed is one of Perth’s oldest station buildings. It is positioned halfway between Fremantle Port and Perth City, linking local with national, domestic with overseas. Here the original single track railway splits to allow the inbound and outbound trains to pass. Since being decommissioned as a Goods Shed, it has been used primarily as a storage unit for a number of charities, as well as a housing a building supplier - the signage of which remains today.
FORM propose to upgrade the existing building and land, creating an activation hub and garden forming a link between the Claremont on the Park development and the existing Claremont Town Centre. FORM’s proposal sees The Goods Shed transformed into a lively space of community amenity. Through a balanced program of daily, weekly and monthly events that invites artistic and creative residencies alongside thought leadership, providing a rich resource of learning, exchange and development. The Goods Shed will become a gallery, studio, workplace, coffee window and a garden. The space will contribute to the cultural development of the area, but will also stimulate high quality events, showcases and activities with the capacity to influence perceptions and build the reputation of the evolving Claremont precinct as a place for new ideas, activity and energy. A series of artist and creative residencies with an associated program of workshops and events will energise the space, sparking ideas and imagination. The residencies will also be linked to FORM’s regional programming to ensure the experience and effectiveness of those undertaking residencies is magnified. Programming will be curated to include participation from local community groups working at a grass roots level,
through to high level international leaders, offering insights from a global perspective. Invited guests will be selected for their relevance to Perth and Claremont’s unique set of conditions, ensuring that the engagement is applicable whilst remaining challenging and inspiring. FORM propose to return the Goods Shed to its original usage of a point of collection, connection, exchange, now used for the interchanging of ideas and creativity. It’s time for the Claremont Goods Shed to have a new lease of life, one that puts it right back at the heart of a community, and makes it once again the indispensable and dependable asset it was designed to be. But this time, with a little bit of a difference. Not a staging post, a destination. No longer a junction for freight and logistics, but for people, events, activities, cultures. A facility which inspires (as well as stores) knowledge, technologies, new practices, ideas. A living bridge between Claremont’s past and present; between new development and old.
DESIGN APPROACH

INTERNAL SPACES The internal spaces will be divided by a series of operable panels allowing the artist in occupants to alter the levels of public access that ranged from completely closed to open plan gallery space. This will create a dynamic and flexible space that will enhance Claremont’s ability to experiece art and culture.
CONNECTING SPACES The revitalisation of the Claremont goods shed will create a new activated thoroughfare on the northern side of the train line, that will give claremont the opportunity to explore its unique history and contemporary culture.
COFFEE POD AND LANDSCAPING On the eastern end of the existing building there will be a coffee pod that extrudes into the newly landscaped area. This new space will be the heart of the sites public space, that will engage and service both pedestrians and train commuters.
HERITAGE Constructed in the early 1900’s, The Goods Shed is one of Perth’s oldest station buildings. This will be celebrated in the treatment of the existing structure. The form will be maintain primarily the same with the addition of several contemporary elements that will activate and engage with the site and greater Claremont.
STRUCTURE AND MATERIALS The original structure and materials such as the hoists, tracks, doors and trusses that were a part of the Goods Shed’s industrial past will be kept and restored to bring this story back to life.

In Western Australia being able to live in creative, stimulating and socially cohesive communities shouldn’t be a privilege but a right. But in enjoying that right, we all share responsibility for making an active contribution towards our communities’ creativity and vibrancy. We may not all be architects or urban planners, but we do live in buildings, in streets, in suburbs of a town or city, so we’re specialists on neighbourhood living too. We could not deliver The Good’s Shed without collaborative partners and benefactors. If you’re interested in discussing how you might assist or partner on the Goods Shed, please make contact:
