The Goods Shed Program
SOME DESTINATIONS ARE WORTH the WAIT 4
Aug - Dec 2016
The great urbanist Jane Jacobs once likened society -― community -― to ‘an endless meeting, where people can be heard and seen and things can happen.’ All good meetings need a good meeting place. Welcome to The Goods Shed, Western Australia’s newest creative project space, in a repurposed heritage railway building at Claremont Station. A year-round program of speakers, artist residencies, projects and workshops. A place to grab a coffee, read the paper, or hang out with friends in the gardens. It’s an exciting new venture, in a very special old building. The opening of The Goods Shed also marks a new beginning for FORM. We’ve now made Claremont our home, and established our headquarters at the Station Master’s House. This is the start of a partnership with the people and the place. We will be here for as long as we feel needed and are able to do relevant and interesting work. Given that we are a non-profit
organisation which raises most of its money through partnerships, our work will, as ever, depend on the support of our partners and sponsors from the public and private sector. We would not be here without the community of partners who have collaborated with us and with each other to transform The Goods Shed and its grounds. Special mention must be made of LandCorp, whose vision and generosity has enabled The Goods Shed to become an integral part of its Claremont on the Park development. In everything we do, we look to the organisations and the individuals who believe, with us, that culture and creativity are vital for the wellbeing of our State, our society and ourselves. We welcome donations, volunteers, creative and in-kind exchange, and at the back of this program you’ll find ways in which you can help us build a state of creativity in Western Australia.

Because The Goods Shed is for all of us as well as for Claremont. It’s intended as something that not only involves the local community, but also that the community will want to share. The Goods Shed is both project space and cultural facility. A place to be inspired by other people, by ideas and imagination. A place for anyone who wants to grow, laugh, learn, share, and use creativity to express how it feels to be human. A place for every one of us. It’s also a point of arrival and departure. It’s where you can bring your ideas and imagination, connect them to others, and then discover just how far you can go.

LIVING HISTORY WEEKEND The train now arriving at Claremont Station . . . is going back to the 1880s. The Goods Shed and the Station Master’s House are part of one of Perth’s oldest railway stations. What was Claremont like back in the 1880s when the station was new? Take a look round the Station Master’s House (now FORM’s new headquarters). Come to The Goods Shed and travel back in time with local historians, researchers and residents. Living History Weekend is part of Open House Perth. HISTORY AND TALES
TROOPS + LETTERS ON THE PLATFORM “My sister was living with me at the time because her husband was in England with the RAAF, and my husband was up in the Islands with the RAAF. So we heard a train racing through Claremont Station, and we automatically know, there’s a troop train. So we’d tear out onto the platform and wave goodbye to the boys. This particular night, it was about 10.20, we flew out onto the platform and it was the boys who had been coming back from Africa that were sent up to the Islands. Now they threw letters at us with a coin in it to weigh it down, we must have got about twenty, twenty five letters from these boys to post to their next of kin, or their loved ones or their wives. So we took all the money out of the envelopes, we stamped all the letters and sent them off.” Oral History: Mrs Copley, the Station Master’s daughter-in-law

GOODS TRAINS
ROYAL SHOW CROWDS
DERAILMENT
“The k class goods train would be diverted into Bassendean, Bayswater before entering Perth marshalling yard if required, by this time it would be 8 to 9am. Travelling on from Perth marshalling yard, the K class goods-train could be signalled into Subiaco, or Claremont, only entering Cottesloe marshalling yard if the passenger train in the lock section behind your train had caught up, otherwise travelling into North Fremantle or Fremantle. By this time it would be late morning and the train crew would have worked a 10 to 12 hour shift. Being the fireman I had emptied two 2.75 tons bunkers of coal, and was very tired. I would go to bed after breakfast and sleep most of the day, after waking, eating dinner to be ready for the next shift that night, railwaymen were working a 44 hour week in the early 1950s.”
“Claremont station was the only station available for the crowds. Pretty near all the people travelled by train and in those days there were five platforms and it was an absolute work of art by the Station Master to control all of the trains that were required... in and out, waiting and what have you, to and from Claremont.
“I wasn’t there at the time, but the only major accident that happened there was a ... goods train... went through the buffer at the western end of the station and fell into the subway... Stirling road subway. The train, I believe was loaded with wheat, there was wheat all over the place.”
“A lot of the stock, machinery, everything came in by road rail to the yards and were off loaded and taken over to the show grounds.”

five day masterclass fantastic realities The dramatic scenery of Western Australia’s Great Southern region will be the inspiration for a unique art and design five-day masterclass in early December 2016 with mischer’traxler. Only 20 places are available for this exceptional opportunity, taking place in Albany in Western Australia’s Great Southern region. Participants will work closely with the internationally renowned design duo in a conceptual and experimental manner. ‘Our creativity will be provoked by fantastic descriptions of surreal-sounding places,’ mischer’traxler explains. ‘Such places, which often have specific characteristics, or host distinctive natural phenomena, will form the basis for tests, explorations and experiments in varying scales, leading to unexpected starting points.’ FORM’s curatorial team will invite written applications from artists, designers and creatives later in the year. Submissions from across the State are encouraged, and FORM will work with successful applicants to assist with securing funds for their travel arrangements if necessary. To register interest and be updated on the official call-out for applications, please email curatorial@form.net.au

ARTIST TALK Revelation, hope + fragility The Goods Shed Artist-in-Residence Berndnaut Smilde creates installations, sculptures and photographs which reference the world in unexpected ways. FORM asked him some questions about his work: How does your homeland or cultural background affect your work? You could say my work is in line with a Dutch tradition. Because we have no mountains, our horizon is very low, that’s why clouds and skies always had a dominant role in painting. But I am also not that interested in nature in particular, I am working with the idea and suggestion of a cloud and rainbow, and their possible meaning. Who or what are your major influences? Spaces and the way we perceive them. Where do you consider the most exciting developments are happening in your artform? Sometimes I run into most exciting situations just around the corner. Find out more about Berndnaut’s inspirations at his artist talk.

ABOUT FORM
ARE YOU INTERESTED IN WHAT WE DO?
FORM is an independent organisation which for over a decade has been working to build ‘a state of creativity’ in Western Australia. We’ve created platforms for debate and action on culture and art and the essential role they play in enhancing everyone’s quality of life. However it is manifested, whether as a huge mural or an inspiring talk, we believe that everyone responds to creativity; it sparks further conversation, learning and connection, and often significant economic return. We know this because we’ve introduced creative people from Australia and all over the world into communities where there has been a hunger not only for self-expression but also for social bonding. We’ve seen the difference creativity can make, how people and places can flourish, how government and business can be influenced by the results it can achieve.
FORM is a charitable not-for-profit organisation with DGR1 and TCC status. We fund the majority of our programming through partnering and sponsorships. We welcome members, donations, volunteers, creative and in-kind exchange. If you are inspired to help us with building a state of creativity,
From making a neighbourhood feel welcoming and distinctive to finding our own aptitude and ambitions, creativity allows us to demand more of our relationships with our environments, our communities, ourselves and each other. That’s why in 2016 we opened The Goods Shed in Claremont, Perth.
All sponsorships will be acknowledged publicly. All donations will be provided a receipt for tax purposes.
Why not consider becoming a FORM member, volunteer or a Goods Shed sponsor? Become a Goods Shed sponsor or donor: We have five levels of giving for donors: benefactors, principal donors, major donors and patrons. If you are interested in becoming a Goods Shed sponsor, please contact us directly on mail@form.net.au to discuss a customised sponsorship package.
