FORMA EDIZIONI 2018
Forma is a publishing initiative aimed at the diffusion of knowledge of trends and experiences in the fields of art, architecture and photography and, more in general, at the promotion of the most interesting researches on productive and technological aspects related to the transformation of the territory, contemporary lifestyles and homes. The intention of the publishing house is to give a “form” to the expressive undercurrents which run through and animate the current cultural debate and to explore both specific areas of knowledge that are known to the public, and to give greater visibility to those currently marginal intellectual and artistic expressions that are considered, for various reasons, to open new vistas on reality. To achieve this, Forma avails itself, without any distinction of priority, of all means of communication, both digital by making its publications available on the internet or by means of e-books, and traditional ones, by printing volumes on paper, such as monographs and catalogues of exhibitions and events. Every initiative is characterized by the high quality of the overall product (including images and printing). The publications are distributed in places (specialized bookstores, museum bookshops and exhibition venues) which, in addition to being available on the internet, assure the necessary and indispensable presence in the “sites” where opinions and critic valuations are formed.

MASSIMILIANO AND DORIANA FUKSAS THE CLOUD New Rome-Eur Convention Centre
2017; Isbn 978-88-99534-51-6 (eng) EUR 79,00
The NUVOLA (NEW CONVENTION CENTRE) is a work of outstanding artistic merit, featuring innovative logistics solutions, and a choice of technically advanced materials. The structure rises in the historic EUR quarter and covers a surface of 55,000 square metres. The project concept can be defined in three images: the Display Case, the Nuvola, and the Blade of the hotel structure. The ‘display case’ is the enclosing structure in steel and double glass facades that encases the ‘Nuvola’ [cloud]. The Nuvola, or true core of the project, is enclosed inside the Display Case box underlining the contrast between the organisation of free space without rules, and a geometrically defined form. The Nuvola contains an auditorium with seating for 1850, cafés and snack bars, and support services for the auditorium. The Nuvola forms the distinctive architectural element of the project: the steel ribbed structure provides an amazing visual effect, and is covered with 15,000 square metres of transparent fabric. This highly flexible complex is able to house congresses, exhibitions, and events with a seating capacity of almost 9,000 people. This book narrates the complete detailed history of this monumental architectural work and its construction through numerous and
evocative images of the work site showing the complexity of the construction stages and the special techniques that were necessary. There are also photos of the completed building, by internationally renowned photographers. The preface of this monographic publication in single Italian or English language, are two critical essays by Joseph Giovannini and Achille Bonito Oliva, and is completed with very rich iconographic material composed of technical drawings on various scales, and sketches by the starchitect, Massimiliano Fuksas, author of the work together with Doriana Fuksas. The book has been published on various types of paper and differently sized sheets which are inserted within the pages. Studio Fuksas, directed by Massimiliano and Doriana, is one of the most famous international architectural firms in the world. Over the past 40 years, the firm has developed an innovative approach through a surprising variety of projects all over the world and and has been awarded numerous international prizes.

With the evolution of agriculture from a familyrun, artisanal economy to an industrial scale activity, wine production was mainly concentrated in industrial style buildings lacking in any architectural inspiration; they were structures where grapes were processed in an anonymous and nondescript manner. The building in which wine was actually made was of no importance as far as architecture and landscape were concerned, since it was limited to a purely functional role. Thanks to a series of social, economic, and also cultural factors, this trend not only began to disappear, but was even completely inverted. The challenge now lies in creating wineries that are industrial buildings suitable for production, but at the same time evocative and engaging spaces, perfectly integrated with the landscape, so that they will not alter the natural beauty of the surrounding countryside. However, they also need to be practical and efficient to make wine processing and transport easy and cost-effective. Showing a selection of more than thirty wineries spread throughout Italy, this book is aimed at investigating the characteristics of each single construction, establishing and underlining the
connection between the architectural structure and its role within the agricultural fabric. An oenological section examines in more detail the production in each of the wineries, analysing the organoleptic characteristics and properties of the wine, offering important suggestions for later analysis. Luca Molinari is a curator and writer alongside his academic career and research activities. He has been teaching History of Contemporary Architecture at SUN, (Seconda Università degli Studi di Napoli) since 2007 and is currently a visiting professor at the Cornell University of Architecture, Art, and Planning in Rome, and at the Fondazione Fotografia in Modena. He was the dean of the School of Design at NABA, (Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti) (2005-06). He has written for, and still collaborates, writing for Italian and international publications including: Corriere della Sera, La Stampa, AD, Platform, Domus, Lotus, Abitare, Ottagono, Il progetto, Archis, L’architecture d’aujourd’hui, A+U and Post. Designed in the 1930s for a Universal Exposition which was never held, the EUR (also known as Eur or E.U.R., that stood for ‘Esposizione Universale di Roma’) is an imposing urban complex that includes several examples of monumental architecture that cohabit with modern buildings constructed in later decades. The complex, commissioned by Benito Mussolini, was planned to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the March on Rome and the Fascist rise to power, during a lavish international World Fair. In recent years, the area has become a residential and business area, and is home to the headquarters of many important companies and public bodies. The most recent intervention was the construction of the New Congress Centre, designed by Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas. This book, edited by Francesco Innamorati, describes the history of this district and its evolution through a reading of the original projects that were never realised: a photographic itinerary taken from the photographic archives of the company. It is the first time that a large volume provides such a complete and comprehensive analysis of the birth and development of one of the most representative and significant concepts
of important architectural and urban projects on such a scale. It is also the first time that such a vast selection of images from photographic archives have been researched: composed of over 16,000 glass photo plates, the archive is an incredible heritage that bears witness to such an important historic period.

The project for Palazzo Lombardia, undertaken to unite offices of the Regional administration previously distributed in other locations, consists of three parts: the tower, 161 metres high for fortythree floors; the base of seven and eight floors; and the linear garden. While the design of the open space has a Cartesian matrix that recalls the forms of the wellirrigated plain south of the city, the design of the buildings has an organic matrix that reinterprets, on the one hand, the mountainous ridges of the north in the constructions and, on the other hand, the valleys furrowed by rivers in the covered piazza, considered the heart of the project and open to the city for events and shows as well. The search for environmental sustainability was incorporated in the use of a double-skin climatic wall, green roofs, heat pumps that use groundwater, and solar panels.

The building is thus a fine representation of innovation and contemporaneity, perfectly aligned with the mainstream of architecture in Milan. The book tells the whole story, in great detail, of this undertaking with critical and descriptive essays, drawings, sketches, work site photographs and images of the completed architecture. This generous documentation leads to comprehension of the building and its role in the context of the urban fabric.

The project consists of the recovery and transformation of the 19th century volume of the former wine warehouse on the seaside boulevard of Trieste. The design does not modify the original volume but invades it by excavating the space for another completely independent, ethereal and translucent building inside it, dimensioned to the rhythm of the masonry wall of the original façade. The physical gap between the new “product” and the historical screen has become a fascinating locus between internal and external. The glass that seals the internal shell reflects the outlines of the warehouse walls and their openings, allowing for visibility of the activities that are being conducted inside. The publication tells the complete and detailed story of this project and its construction with numerous engaging work site images that reveal the complexity of the building phases and the specificity of the work processes that were necessary and, naturally, the shots of the results upon completion. The monograph, in a single language Italian or English edition, is introduced by critical and descriptive essays and accompanied by a wealth of iconographic material including technical drawings at various scales. The volume is composed of different types of papers – inserted with diverse dimensions among the pages – fixed with a special exposed type of backbone binding, all developed ad hoc in relation to the originality of the project to be presented.
Founded in 1988 by Laura Andreini, Marco Casamonti and Giovanni Polazzi, joined by Silvia Fabi in 1999, today the ARCHEA ASSOCIATI studio is a network of approximately 100 architects operating in the six offices located in Florence, Milan, Rome, Beijing, Dubai and Sao Paulo. The interests and the creativity of the studio range from landscape to cityscape, building to design, and although focused on architecture, the projects also include graphics and publishing, exhibitions and events. The complementarity and sliding scale that varies from critique to work site, allows for integrated effectiveness capable of intervening in the various compositional forms of the project. Currently under construction: the commercial and residential Forevergreen Tower and the National Stadium of Albania, both in Tirana, and the Changri-La Winery in Penglai (China).

The selection, preparation and application of materials in architecture represent key points in the design process, today as in the past. A vast array of ad hoc solutions make it possible to confer targeted functions and substantial qualities to structures, surfaces, shells and spaces, and contribute to the definition of the project identity. This book publishes some of the most important projects realized by Archea Associati, recognized especially for the specificity of their use of materials. Glass, terracotta, concrete and wood are just a few of the elements that classify their projects. The architectural works demonstrate how the various materials can be interpreted differently from time to time to become truly innovative, while still maintaining their unique
characteristics. Ancient and contemporary materials, tradition and innovation follow upon one another throughout the volume, in a sort of atlas of materials, the stuff of architecture. A gallery of photographic images accompanied by drawings and descriptive texts provides full illustration of the buildings, alternating between details and general views, from the basic elements to the complete work as a whole.

The new Antinori winery project is located in the extraordinary hilly landscape covered with vineyards of Chianti, halfway between Florence and Siena. The customer wanted a building which enhanced the surrounding landscape and territory and bore witness to the cultural and social relevance of the places where wine is made. The conceptual theme of the project has taken the form of a shell that is totally underground, without roofs, walls, streets and parking spaces, following a design which dares to reconcile (a difficult but necessary challenge) the natural and the artificial. It is precisely the story of this constant research, of the indispensable connection between architecture and landscape, which represents the fulcrum on which the whole volume pivots. Hundreds of photographs by Pietro Savorelli have immortalized years of work on the building site,
telling the story of all the phases that have made it possible to realize this extraordinary project. The images, along with numerous technical drawings on every scale, critical and descriptive texts, illustrate the design process which has led to the construction of a new landscape.

19×27 cm; 344 pages; ita or eng; paper binding Founder of Superstudio, initiator of the so-called “Radical Architecture” movement (one of the most important avant-garde movements of the sixties and seventies), Adolfo Natalini describes years of designed and constructed architectural projects through his preferential medium: drawings and sketches. This book contains work from several of his large collection of notebooks retracing almost fifty years of professional career. The order in which the notebooks are published, interspaced and coordinated by means of a long interview, demonstrate the evolution of the initial idea, interpretation and vision of the architectural oeuvre of one of the leaders in Italian architecture. Adolfo Natalini was born in Pistoia in 1941. After his experience as a painter, he graduated in architecture at Florence University in 1966 and founded Superstudio, (with Cristiano Toraldo
di Francia, Gian Piero Frassinelli, Roberto and Alessandro Magris). Superstudio’s designs have appeared in publications and exhibitions all over the world and it’s works now form part of collections such as the MoMA in New York, the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, the Deutsche Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt am Main and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. From 1979 onwards Natalini started working on his own and concentrating on his designs for historical towns in Italy and other countries in Europe, looking for the traces left by time on objects and places and proposing a reconciliation between collective and personal memory. He is a full professor at the faculty of architecture of Florence University and an honorary member of the BDA, (Bund Deutscher Architekten), of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence and of the Accademia di San Luca.

The volume records the experience of Archea Associati in China through 20 illustrated projects of recent years. The collection includes competitions, projects under construction and complete works. It gives an overview on the design and research activity of Archea, ranging from masterplans for entire cities to housing and industrial complexes, to the interior design of single buildings. Charlie Xia’s images, the technical drawings and some text descriptions represent a fundamental instrument for the interpretation and the comprehension of the selected projects. A critical text by Zhenning Fang gives the opportunity to reflect on the peculiarities of contemporary Chinese architecture and on its possible future evolutions.
The volume, part of the Contemporary Authors series, provides an opportunity to reflect upon over twenty years of Studio Achea’s activity. After the introduction by François Burkhardt, more than 50 works by the studio are shown, placed in different thematic sections such as landscape, architecture, interiors and furnishing. The broad selection of architecture and projects published is proof of the continual research and experimentation of ever-evolving themes. Nevertheless, in spite of unceasing interest in variation, specific characteristics of the cultural circles involved in the project emerge, along with the differences. Going beyond the heterogeneity of the submitted proposals, we can catch a glimpse of a clear guideline, which sets Studio Archea in a well-defined position within the landscape of contemporary architecture.

I padiglioni

In the past twenty years, nearly all of Europe’s major exhibition centres have been expanded, rebuilt, or constructed in new locations to replace antiquated and inadequate facilities. Significant amounts have been invested in developments that have often brought radical change to entire city districts. This volume offers a selection of the most interesting European exhibition complexes, distinguishing the new centres (as for example the fairs in Milan, Rome and Stuttgart), from those which have been renovated or expanded (such as Vienna, Berlin, Padua and Turin). Each project is described through an illustrative
text, completed by images and technical drawings. In the last pages, a practical manual summarizes all the information and the requirements for the correct design of a trade fair.

This book recounts the conversion of a historic villa into a highly specialized cancer center. The design’s guiding theme is a dialogue between history and the present day. The situation is as unique as the process of designing the center, which took an innovative, experimental approach. Within this complex, quickly-changing context, the story of the new Centro Oncologico Fiorentino cancer center offers inspiration for two lines of further thought. The first of these is reflection on the role of historic buildings in hospital conversion projects. The second is the role of clients and the cultural perspective that gave meaning to the goals and questions that are part of the lengthy design process. It’s a volume which seeks share ideas and hopes with the community of all those who are interested in exploring a healthcare culture waiting to take its next great leap forward.
The volume is dedicated to three projects realized in Italy by the architect Valbonesi, all of which centre on wineries. A highly topical issue, wineries have seen considerable developments in recent years; they represent an expression and synthesis of a certain way to relate the products of the earth to the landscape that produce them, through stylistic and formal choices that are specifically adapted to the territory, to the use of certain materials, and which consider the impact of these buildings on the landscape. The book describes the wineries of Campo del Sole (Bertinoro, FC), Tormaresca (San Pietro Vernotico, BR) and Castello della Sala (Ficulle, TR), recent works by Valbonesi. The publication vaunts a large selection of photographs, technical drawings and construction details, to describe the works as completely and exhaustively as possible.

HABITAR A COMUNIDADE by Marco Casamonti and Massimiliano Giberti
2012; Isbn 978-88-96780-27-5 EUR 30,00
Rio de Janeiro is currently the centre of the world’s attention due to the events the city and the Brazilian government have succeeded in attracting to the former capital. This is the result of a specific political strategy aimed at consolidating the image of a country undergoing a rapid expansion, which is becoming increasingly irreconcilable with the conspicuous presence of an informal urban fabric in the form of favelas. The volume Habitar a comunidade / Abitare la comunità has been created within the context of an attempt to identify new strategies of intervention in the “informal city” that rather than try to impose external models, aims to define some simple operational principles that may be implemented both by individuals and by administrations through shared and participative projects. The underlying concept is that the communities can only be upgraded through a direct involvement of their own members.

RUA HARMONIA A HOUSE TO WORK IN / UNA CASA PER LAVORARE / UMA CASA PARA TRABALHAR edited by Fernando Serapião 2017; Isbn 978-88-99534-23-3 EUR 25,00
The house built by Archea is located at number 86 in rua Harmonia, in the Vila Madalena district. The address is stamped into the reinforced concrete wall, on the left side of the entrance door, like a bas-relief. The concrete is dark red, throughout the house. Everything is made from concrete, corten and wood. The architecture of Rua Harmonia picks up a tradition, developing, accepting, and enriching it with another chapter that enables it to evolve in a linguistic dialogue with its context; it is so connected and at the same time, so autonomous, that it could become a home for its designer.

Under 50 over 5000 presents a completely new selection of designs made for the fashion sector, analysed and described with the precious contribution of their creator, Antonio Barbieri, an architect but above all a craftsman who has worked with interior design, exhibition areas and commercial spaces for many years. The volume unites and describes, through texts, technical drawings and images by Pietro Savorelli, a selection of works, comprising numerous projects ranging from furniture to lighting design, from concepts for international brands to window displays, to temporary stores. The main theme of the story about architecture is the outstanding versatility of this design, which is especially evident from an essential trait that characterizes all the projects included in the

publications, namely their markedly “crafted” and “customised” nature.
The skilful use of the materials and their adaptation to forms and placements, which is often very original, allow Barbieri to create spaces that not only succeed in meeting the commercial requirements, but that also adjust to the all-important present-day restriction, that of the “cost per square meter”. In fact, the choice of projects presented herein comprises both projects of luxurious interiors where nothing has been spared and others where a remarkable result has been achieved in spite of a limited budget.

Proportion as immutable principle, five hundred years since Alberti’s formulations, constitutes the first compositional reference in architecture, rule of instruction, inspiration factor, and design control. Those same proportions, that for Viollet-le-Duc depend on the “rules of geometry”, perhaps make up the element that most clearly manifests the “continuity of the classic” and the permanence of that value system that subterraneously, as is repeatedly shown in this study, coexists with adherence to the modern and the search for rationality that characterizes the experience of the twenties and thirties in Italy.
We need to reflect carefully on the contemporary meaning of building, on how we interpret it today, on the role it plays regionally and in the contemporary city, on the way in which it arrives to its construction, on its economic, social, political, and cultural conditions, and finally on the overall production and regulatory conditions. At the same time, it is necessary to understand the role that architectural design plays in returning this new reality to the building, the city, and the region, in a new relationship with construction techniques and, therefore, with technology. A role that today can become outdated, unable to accept the challenges of innovation with respect to sustainable development. Forced to be merely superficial, cosmetic, embellishment, a kind of end-user of technique, products and components.

Laura Andreini
The residential building presented in this monograph - the result of an architectural method based on design experiments the Diverserighe firm has conducted since it was founded in 2003 - proves that it is possible to achieve surprising results even if one has to work with limited budgets and in contexts that offer nothing in terms of natural sceneries or charming townscapes. The firm has, nevertheless, succeeded in “inventing”, with few studied volumetric shifts, a remarkably accomplished and fascinating work. The articulation of the aggregate has been obtained by means of measured movements, both vertical and horizontal, of the rough surfaces of an outer shell that is as simple as it is expressive. Both the house and the book are therefore testimonials of the extraordinary possibilities offered by architecture, as an opportunity available to all those who want to seek it. Laura Andreini

In fact, the architectural integrity of the exterior of the original building has been accentuated by an equally attentive and painstaking work of philological restoration which has not altered the elements of the ornamental modelling, while a new functional redistribution of the interior has innervated the respect for memory with the invention of a new configuration that centres, in terms of volume, on the sinuous spiral of the winding stairs that connect the domestic space with its fluctuating, ably designed forms.

NEOSTUDIO PIAZZA GARIBALDI
Within the context of the plan aimed at upgrading the centre of Lastra a Signa, Eleonora Burlando and Riccardo Miselli have redesigned the large open area of Piazza Garibaldi, an urban barycentre, with small and carefully designed additions. The large empty space, which has been used for agricultural and then military purposes, has clearly formed new links to the surroundings, by reactivating an attentious dialogue with distinctive local elements. The installation of linear stereometric elements and a cheerful system of fountains, the creation of new surfaces on different levels that adapt to the natural slope of the terrain, constitute the ingredients of the design of a new urban “void” that is functionally flexible and suited to various public activities as market, arena, meeting place, and that at the same time vaunts a distinctive atmosphere and establishes a dialogue with the inhabitants.

A guide to contemporary architecture in a city such as Florence might seem an oxymoron to certain readers. This book, part of the On the Road series, is aimed at showing how one of the Italian cities most strongly linked with its past, in fact - the quintessential symbol of the Renaissance period, conceals a myriad of innovative architecture. Florence is not a static city. It has often been guilty of long delays and a certain lack of courage in assimilating new approaches, but its way of introducing contemporary architecture into a consolidated context, is unique. Changes with great impact began in Florence at the end of the 19th century with the urban planning transformations designed by Giuseppe Poggi. The strongly defined limits of the historic centre became blurred with the demolition of the fortifications and the city was opened up to permit expansion. In the 1930s, the Rationalist design of the Santa Maria Novella Station introduced a new form of architectural expression into the historic centre and outskirts of the city.
This is the building that begins the itinerary proposed in this guide; a chronological, but also a physical beginning: a starting point for visitors to begin their architectural excursion. The guide includes a practical map which can be folded to form a removable book jacket. The back of the map shows all the works described in the book, arranged according to easy itineraries. There are a lot of examples of some of the city’s most interesting architecture, concentrating mainly on the contemporary aspects, and providing detailed descriptions. The book also provides useful information and advice to make the visitor’s experience easier and more pleasant.

quell'atmosfera socievole e comunitaria.

Hamburg is the first “destination” presented by the series. An introduction featuring three critical treatises outlines the historic and urbanistic profile of the city, allowing the reader to reflect on the evolution of the city and at the same time relate it to the contemporary image of the places. The selection of 75 projects, organized in 5 itineraries, provides a full-immersion in architecture, allowing the reader to dwell on the functional, typological and compositive aspects of the buildings, which are rendered even more legible by images and technical drawings that supplement the descriptions.
Second edition of this guide on Milan, enriched with a focus on the Fondazione Prada. In recent years, this city has become a metropolis involved in transformations that are well worthy of interest for the architectural and urbanistic experiments that have been carried out. The complex dialectics between innovation and respect for the existing urban form is the distinctive characteristic of this metropolis, marked as a strongly contemporary city. This guide is being launched in answer to a moment of great focus on Milan, and it emphasises the unique nature of its complex character.

The last fifteen years of Russian history have profoundly altered Moscow, bringing dramatic changes to the Communist city it was in the eighties. These alterations have increasingly highlighted Moscow’s many contrasts and multiple facets. The guide seeks to do more than just recount and illustrate the city’s architectural history. It strives to be a tool to study the building trends that have shaped it. After a short introduction and the essential information needed to plan a visit, the book includes several essays that give the city’s historical context and then critically consider its possible future developments.

Milan has long been a platform for creating design. The infrastructure and facilities in Milan have made it central to the world of design, graphics, and architecture since the mid-1950s, and the Milan Furniture Fair and fashion industry have given it a permanent place of prominence on international calendars. Designers, companies, and furniture makers have long been the driving force of a world that must always make itself anew to stay fresh and competitive. The book would like to cover major past events and their connection to Milan while also exploring the current situation and offer thoughts for the future. The volume spotlights the stories of many generations of Italian and foreign designers who share having contributed to the Milan design system, which became well established on an international scale over the span of nearly a century (1950–2020). The designers were chosen based on their careers, their connections to Milan because they studied or worked here, whether opening their own studios or serving in other organizations (such as style offices, technical company offices, and schools), and for having kept their international relevance. The two common threads are the places where their creative design process happened and the voices of the designers themselves. Interviews with the key players of the Milan design scene bring together ideas and insights of the creative people who bring the city alive. The goal is to capture an ever-evolving world and to portray Milan’s international spirit through the voices of those who embody it.
Marco Sammicheli teaches at the Design School of the Politecnico of Milan, and he has been design curator for Abitare since 2014. After graduating in Communication Science in Siena and specializing in the history of design at Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany, he completed a PhD in Design and Technologies for Cultural Heritage with a study on sacred architecture in Italy and Chile. He wrote a monograph about Zaha Hadid and has written catalogue essays about Nendo, Studio65, Ingo Maurer, and Simonetta Ferrante. He participated in the Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2014 with the studies “Designing the sacred” and “Assisi laboratory”. In 2016, he published the illustrated essay “Disegnare il sacro”. For the Museo del Novecento in Milan, he curated the exhibitions Munari politecnico and James Irvine. An Englishman in Milan. He created the exhibition cycles for TIM Milano Galleria focusing on the new talents of Italian design. For the Triennale di Milano, with Dejan Sudjic and Ermanno Ranzani, he curated the retrospective show Mario Bellini: Italian Beauty. He recently organized a residency program for designers at the Embassy of Italy in Copenhagen.

Italian design is recognized worldwide as a unique example of design culture and economics. The right historical circumstances converged to help shape and develop design in Italy as the industry took advantage of the opportunities presented by products of with high quality, aesthetics and a group of designers worked with manufacturers to make a complete universe of design objects that became famous around the world. This book tells the story, like never before, of almost hundred years of Italian design, through the designers and companies that together built an original image of manufacturing, true to the high standard of creative innovation that has defined Italian industry. This publication seeks to tell the story of how this intense industry evolved, tied to the individual talents of designers, photographers, graphic designers, and entrepreneurs who forged a truly unique and original communication system and became a standard setter for future generations as well as the “cultural landscapes” of other countries. Design, graphics, photography, and installations interact with each other within this system, complementing one another to form an exceptionally interesting whole. This book aims to tell an international audience how Italy achieved such excellence in design, helped by this unique, original communication system like none before it.

“Karim Rashid is more than a designer, with unbounded popularity expressing the personality of a complete artist. His global creativity, interpretation of a form of sensual, minimalist design that has conquered the market with more than 3000 designs currently in production, is multi-faceted and eccentric, with a more than ordinary ability to perceive the reactions and sensations generated by space and everything that occupies it. Karim Rashid has a dream: using design to change the world.” – Marco Casamonti

The evolution of doing design in Italy is steady and progressive, following the inclination to consider the design process as a characterizing element of innovation. The project has become an industry, culture is its raw material and historical continuity is the premise of its credibility. The evolution of the project process has become a fundamental concept – believing in the possibility to improve the way of conducting certain activities, to imagine impossible meetings and clashes between things, constitutes a leading field of exploration. Planning the project is the first concrete action that determines originality.

OMAR GALLIANI INTORNO A CARAVAGGIO
new
edited by Raffaella Resch
2017; Isbn 978-88-99534-57-8 (ita) EUR 18,00
Published to coincide with the exhibition “The last Caravaggio: heirs and new masters “at Gallerie d’Italia – Piazza Scala, the Intesa Sanpaolo Museum in Milan, this book provides illustrations of the exhibition works, but also an in-depth analysis of the figure and work of the artist. Omar Galliani is one of the most original figures on the contemporary artistic scene. The focal point of the exhibition, and therefore this publication, is represented by the work Red Cadmium for Caravaggio. The piece is based on Caravaggio’s Martyrdom of Saint Ursula masterpiece of the Intesa Sanpaolo collection, and proposes Omar Galliani’s reflections on Michelangelo Merisi. As well as the 10 works on show, the book includes a large number of other works by the artist illustrating his artistic progress, as well as an article by Omar Galliani and a detailed essay by Raffaella Resch, curator of the exhibition and publishing project. The publication is rich in biographical and bibliographical material that provides a deep insight into the artist and his work.
Omar Galliani was born in Montecchio Emilia in 1954 and graduated from the Academy of fine arts of Bologna, where he lives and works. He has participated three times at the Venice Biennale, in 1982, 1984 and 1986, and since then, his work has been shown in important exhibitions and museums all over the world. During the Seventies, he was part of the Anachronism movement: in contrast to conceptual art and contemporary multimedia techniques, he returned to painting as a means of expression, proposing classical subjects and iconography. This experience remained the focal point of his artistic development. In fact, despite Galliani’s experiments with various techniques, from painting to installation art, he has mainly concentrated on pencil and charcoal drawings. His modern interpretation of traditional art expresses his desire to identify a poetic and temporal continuity between the past and present.

Catalogue of the first retrospective of Afro Libio Basaldella, better known as Afro. The exhibition, at the Tornabuoni Art Gallery in Paris, shows works ranging from the 1930s to the 1970s. It includes a room completely dedicated to the preparatory sketches for his large fresco,The Garden of Hope, created in 1958 for the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. His link with American Abstract Expressionism was analysed in the catalogue by Barbara Drudi of the Accademia di Firenze, and thanks to the curatorship of Philip Rylands. Afro Libio Basaldella (Udine, 1912 - Zurich, 1976) was perhaps the most renowned member of the Friuli Avant-garde Movement, which influenced his approach towards a more Expressionist sense of painting that had always been based on traditional Venetian Colourism. In the 1940s, Afro joined the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti, and following a visit to the United States, he joined the Gruppo degli Otto, with whom he exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1952. Although in certain aspects his style seemed similar to American Action Painting, his harmonious tonal modulation and later research into abstract shapes and forms produced intellectually sophisticated results.
Philip Rylands is a graduate of King’s College Cambridge, and received his PhD at Cambridge in 1981 with a thesis on the Venetian Renaissance painter, Palma il Vecchio. In 2008, he was awarded a honorary degree by the University of Art and Design of Cluj, in Romania. His published works include Restoring Venice: The Church of the Madonna dell’Orto (1976), Palma il Vecchio (1988; English edition,1992) and Flying the Flag for Art: The United States and the Venice Biennale 18951991 (1993). In 2003, with Laura Mattioli, he edited the catalogue raisonné of the Gianni Mattioli Collection, by Flavio Fergonzi, and the Peggy Guggenheim and Frederick Kiesler collections with Susan Davidson: The Story of Art of This Century (2004). He was the Director of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice until 2017. He lectures regularly at various universities, writes academic articles and essays, curates exhibitions and contributes to exhibition catalogues.

The monograph published for Art Basel 2018, provides an in-depth analysis of the artistic development of Alberto Burri, one of the most prominent figures in Italian art in the 1950s and 60s. He graduated in medicine in 1940, and while serving as a military medic during the war, he was captured by the Allies in Tunisia. He began his artistic career while he was a prisoner of war, and as a result, later abandoned medicine. Fascinated by the mixed-media experiments produced by Enrico Prampolini, and Jean Dubuffet’s research into Art Brut, he decided to focus his attention on new materials and techniques, ignoring matter and analysing the tactile aspect of pigments, interpreted through the use of dense enamel paint that gradually replaced oil paint. Following his works on canvas, Burri embarked on a stylistic challenge using artificial contemporary industrial products as well as wood, iron, natural materials used since time began, plastics, resin, and cellotext that have now become part of our everyday environment. His work was a constant battle against the dictates of the past in favour of an art form that created a clean slate eliminating the mannerist involution of abstract art.
Among his most memorable works are his Tars, Combustions, Irons, Woods and Plastics ; these were the result of research taken to extreme levels of experimentation and that led to a reflection on all that had occurred in the previous life of those materials before they became permanently fixed in their static form in a work of art. In the catalogue for the exhibition, “The New Decade: 22 European painters and sculptures” held at the MoMA in New York in1955, he wrote: “My painting […] is a tenacious presence that refuses to be translated into any other form of expression. It is a presence that is both impending and active at the same time. This is what it means: living in the same way as I paint”.

READING DE CHIRICO edited by Katherine Robinson
2017; Isbn 978-88-99534-47-9 EUR 69,00
could be extended to the fourth of modernism’s “patriarchs,“ Georges Seurat, who by contrast with the disparagement shown Cézanne, indifference to van Gogh and hesitation over Gauguin received a remarkably positive reception in Surrealism from the 1920s and also seems to have escaped the typical spleen of de Chirico, who called Seurat in 1920, surely due to his classicizing tendencies, “a painter of great talent who died young.“16 This estimation of Seurat was made in the monographic essay on Renoir who offers a particularly fascinating test case for the notion of de Chirico as a tutor in modern painting, or precursor theorist as much as a precursor artist, for the younger Surrealists. Although it left the young pre-Surrealist artists and poets cold, Renoir’s work both early and late did attract the attention of painters of the generation before them, some of whom the Dada artists and poets and Surrealists admired, such as de Chirico and Picasso, and others they did not, like Henri Matisse. Approaching the end of the Metaphysical period of his painting that was already gaining such strong approval from some of the future Surrealists, de Chirico wrote in 1920, with unusual insight but in a typically distinctive way that was quite against the grain of the standard interpretations of Renoir’s oeuvre pro and con, on what he saw as the boredom and melancholy that imbued its scenes from bourgeois life:

[h]is Le déjeuner des canotiers [Luncheon of the Boating Party], 1881 and Family Portrait (possibly La famille de l’Artiste [The Artist’s Family] of 1896) of 1896 are remarkable; these works are full of melancholy and a weary tedium found in the novels of some of France’s best authors: the ennui of a bourgeois family, the melancholy of a Sunday afternoon, of a country outing or a minor mundane tragedy imprinted in the attitudes and expressions of its obscure characters. Such an aspect of ennui and melancholy is not lacking in a certain Metaphysical sense, that subtle and inexplicable sentiment that always accompanies a true work of art.17
De Chirico’s commentary took place seemingly in anticipation of his Renoiresque paintings to come that cluster around 1930 such as Vita silente con il belvedere di Apollo e frutta [Still Life with the Apollo Belvedere and Fruit], Vita silente [Still Life], Nudo [Nude], and perhaps Bagnante al sole (Arianna abbandonata) [Bather in the Sun (Ariadne Abandoned)]. The last of these has been called “an overripe Renoiresque pastiche of heavy flesh, asleep on a Mediterranean beach,“18 and could be read as an amalgamation of Renoir’s divisive late nudes (it was hung with eleven other comparable ones on its first showing at de Chirico’s solo exhibition in Milan in 1932) and that artist’s similarly posed Jeune berger au repos (Portrait d’Alexander Thurneysson) [Young Shepherd in Repose (Portrait of Alexander Thurneyssen)] (1911).19 De Chirico wrote favourably

The works of Giorgio de Chirico are among some of the most iconic in the panorama of 20th century Italian art, but few people are aware of the vast literary heritage left by the artist. In an unprecedented exhibition, at its London gallery, Tornabuoni Art is showing over 25 works that cover the entire career of the artist, together with original manuscripts that offer an unknown vision of Giorgio de Chirico and his artistic world. This book, edited by Katherine Robinson, documents the important exhibition through a rich collection of iconographic works, critiques written by modern masters, his contemporaries, some love letters, and also poetry. Visitors will be able to discover a totally new reading of di Chirico’s works through words written by his own hand.

The exhibition includes nine sections, each illustrating a different subject explored by the artist during his career: Piazzas of Italy, Metaphysical Interiors, Portraits and Self-portraits, Still life studies, Mannequins, Horses and Cavaliers, Gladiators, Mythology, and mysterious Bathers in pools. The catalogue also proposes an important and hitherto unpublished contribution by Gavin Parkinson, Senior Lecturer at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. A section of bio-bibliographic writings completes the publication.

The catalogue of the exhibition that Tornabuoni Art gallery in London dedicated to Lucio Fontana is the result of in-depth archival research. It features texts by Enrico Crispolti, author of Lucio Fontana. The essays give great insight into the origins, content and features involved in the works and in the artistic movement that the artist himself referred to as Spazialismo, illustrating the underlying reasons for the growing international interest in Fontana’s work. The authors have provided important curatorship, with historical reconstructions and critical analyses that bring to bear upon this selection of works the full significance of the targeted research programme. The idea behind the selection is to document the cycles of work which Fontana dedicated the last twenty years of his life, so we find canvases from the Holes cycle from the opening years of the 1950s, the Stones from 1953-56, the Baroques from 1956-57, the Impastos and the Anilines from the end of the decade. There are also various types of Slashes, from the experimental ones of 1959-60 to the essentially iconic works of the 1960s, as well as the complex Little Theatres of 1964-66 and the new Oils with craters of the early 1960s.

Lucio Fontana is universally acknowledged as one of the foremost figures in the generation of artists who, in the 1950s and ‘60s, helped bring about a radical conceptual and linguistic change in contemporary art. This catalogue, published for the exhibition dedicated to the artist at Art Basel 2017, is the result of research conducted to provide a deeper understanding of a specific cycle of works by Lucio Fontana. The paintings on show, and analysed in this catalogue, belong to his series The End of God. They were painted on egg-shaped, identically-sized canvases, and feature constellations of “holes” and/or slashes and/or scratches, which are sometimes limited to one part of the monochromatic canvas, while others cover the entire surface painted in oils (and sometimes sequins). In an interview with Carlo Cisventi in 1963, the artist explained: “For me, they represent the infinite, the inconceivable, the end of figurative representation, the beginning of nothingness.”

Jan Fabre. Spiritual Guards is the catalogue title for the large-scale exhibition promoted by the Municipality of Florence to be held at the Forte di Belvedere, Palazzo Vecchio and Piazza della Signoria between May 14 and October 2016. This is one of the most complex exhibitions by the Flemish artist and theatrical director, Jan Fabre, ever held in Italian public areas. On display will be about a hundred works created between 1978 and 2016: bronze sculptures, scarab shell installations, wax pieces, and documentary films of his performances. Fabre will also present two brand new works created especially for this occasion. The important event is beautifully illustrated in this book with photography by the internationally famous photographer, Attilio Maranzano. Critical essays and introductions
by the curators Melania Rossi and Joanna De Vos, the project’s artistic director, Sergio Risaliti, and by Arabella Natalini, provide analyses of the works on show and describe the extraordinary and multifaceted career of the artist. Spiritual Guards is an incitement to live a heroic life, either unarmed or as a warrior, in defence of imagination and beauty.

JAN FABRE GLASS AND BONE SCULPTURES 1977-2017 edited by Giacinto Di Pietrantonio, Katerina Koskina, Dimitri Ozerkov
“The philosophical and poetic reason behind associating human and animal bones with glass, comes from a recollection of my sister as a child playing with a tiny glass object. It made me think of the flexibility of human bone structure and the flexibility used in glass-blowing techniques. Certain animals, and all human beings, leave their mother’s womb like molten glass from the furnace. They can be modelled, bent, and shaped with a surprising level of freedom.”. – Jan Fabre 2017

2017; Isbn 978-88-99534-30-1 (eng) EUR 49,00
Jan Fabre has always been strongly fascinated by alchemy and the memory of matter. This new volume – published on the occasion of his exhibition at the Abbazia di San Gregorio, one of the collateral events of the Venice Biennale includes previously unpublished works and contexts, the result of a meticulous selection by the curators Giacinto Di Pietrantonio, Katerina Koskina and Dimitri Ozerkov: works in glass and bone created by the artist during a period that spans from 1977 to 2017, are on show together for the first time. The artist makes a reference to Flemish Masters who used crushed bone in their paintings , and to Venetian glass-blowers. Fabre has deliberately chosen two materials that are hard and strong, but delicate and fragile at the same time. The catalogue contains critiques by the curators, and contributions by Melania Rossi and Adriano Berengo and naturally includes extensive iconographic material illustrating all the works on show in the exhibition. At the same time, this volume bears witness and documents an exceptional event, part of one of the most important artistic exhibitions in the world.

SCARPITTA RACING CARS / ART BASEL 2016 edited by Luigi Sansone, Valentina Fasan 2016; Isbn 978-88-99534-16-5 EUR 55,00
Luigi Sansone deals with one of the most fascinating but also least understood aspects of the creative talent of Salvatore Scarpitta. Through photos from archives, it has been possible to present a far deeper reading of these works, especially in the case of the Sal Ardun Special model, whose aesthetic form resembled the cars built by Scarpitta in the sixties; however, unlike the previous models, this was no longer a simulation, because for the first time, the artist also equipped the model with a functioning motor. The essays included in the catalogue describe the artist and his work with great precision, defining the origin and theoretical context from which these works took form, and how they were developed, exhibited and became recognised by a far-reaching public. Since his adolescent years, Salvatore Scarpitta (New York, 1919) was able to develop a special passion for car racing and the racing circuit world. He completed his high school studies in Hollywood in 1936, and decided to travel to Italy to study at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome, where he graduated in 1940. In 1958,
for the first time he showed his extroflexed canvases, together with works based on stretched strips and bands at the Galleria La Tartaruga in Rome. These works brought a strong breeze of originality to the artistic world in Rome and stimulated a large number of Italian and international artists. At the beginning of the Sixties, Scarpitta built two racing cars that he showed in 1965 at the Leo Castelli Gallery. In the summer of 1985, in his studio-garage in Baltimore, Maryland, Scarpitta realised a dream that dated back to his teenage years: he built a perfectly authentic racing car (Dirt Track Racer) which, with the help of Leo Castelli, he took to the dirt track circuits of Maryland and Pennsylvania to compete against the leading champions of the period. Between the Fifties and the present time, Scarpitta’s works have been shown in a large number of exhibitions in Europe and in the United States. Scarpitta died in New York on April 10, 2007.

Glenn Brown creates an artistic language that transcends time and pictorial conventions. His mannerist instincts stem from the desire to breathe new life into the distant confines of historical form. Through references, appropriation and research, he presents a contemporary reading of images that are fixed in memory. His figures and landscapes, borrowed from the world of history of art, are gradually transformed in exuberant entities. Different historic periods: Renaissance, Impressionism, and Surrealism, are blended in sophisticated compositions. Brown creates a space in which the abstract, the visceral, the rational and irrational, the beautiful and grotesque, come together in a frenetic amalgamation. This book forms the catalogue
of the exhibition to be held between June 10 and October 26 at the Museo Bardini in Florence. Alongside the renowned collection of the great nineteenth and twentieth century art dealer and collector Stefano Bardini, more than thirty works by Glenn Brown will be on show, including paintings, drawings and sculptures. Some of the works have been created specifically for the exhibition and will be shown for the first time. This book offers comprehensive documentation and bears witness to this wonderful cultural event that places the city of Florence in the forefront in its promotion of contemporary art.

John Currin is the catalogue title of the exhibition to be held at the Museo Stefano Bardini beginning on June 2016. His ambitious paintings seduce, shock, and surprise at the same time. Currin’s well-mastered technique results from the control and emulation of the composition, graphic rhythm, and refined finishes typical of 16th and 17th century Northern European paintings. His inspiration is drawn from portraits by old masters, pin-up girls, pornography and B movies, so Currin paints images that challenge conventional sense and taste, with his perverse ideals about women, including libidinous nymphs, strict middle-aged women and the most angelic of feminine models.

JEFF KOONS IN FLORENCE edited by Sergio Risaliti, texts by Cristina Acidini, Elena Capretti, Carlo Francini, Edoardo Nesi, Norman Rosenthal, Francesco Vossilla, Joachim Pissarro 2016; Isbn 978-88-99534-03-5 (ita) EUR 79,00
2016; Isbn 978-88-99534-05-9 (eng) EUR 79,00
The volume has been published on the occasion of the exhibition Jeff Koons in Florence, hosted at Palazzo Vecchio in Piazza della Signoria. Two works, Pluto and Proserpina (from the series Antiquity) and the Barberini Faun (from the series Gazing Ball) will be temporarily shown in two special locations, one public – the Arengario – next to the classical sculptures by Donatello and Michelangelo, and one more private and intimate, inside the Sala dei Gigli of the Palazzo Vecchio. The book is enriched with numerous texts by internationally renowned critics, presenting many points of reflection, in particular on the specifics of this exhibition and in general on the body of work of one of the most important exponents of the Postmodern. A section devoted to biographical and bibliographical matter and a summary of the exhibited works, together with a large collection of images from the Jeff Koons Studio, provides an important overview of the artist’s prolific career.
“The Gazing Ball series is based in transcendence. The realization of one's mortality is an abstract thought and from there, one is able to have a concept of the external world, one's family, community, and a vaster dialogue with humankind beyond the present”. – Jeff Koons

SCHEGGI edited by Luca Massimo Barbero
2015; Isbn 978-88-99534-04-2 (fra/eng) EUR 120,00
The slipcase is composed by two books: the first one, Scheggi 1966 La Biennale Di Venezia / Art Basel 2015 was presented during Art Basel 2015. The second volume accompanies Scheggi’s individual exhibition at the Tornabuoni Art gallery in Paris. A comprehensive, exacting catalogue seeks to outline Scheggi’s extraordinary, interdisciplinary artistic explorations, starting with this early work in the 1950s to his last conceptual and metaphysical directions in the early 1970s. The catalogue starts from the essential view that Scheggi’s full œuvre, in its cohesive eclecticism, cannot be understood in separate phases or times. Taking it as a single trajectory of his life and art, the catalogue is divided into seven chronological and thematic parts, introduced by writings by Luca Massimo Barbero and abundant footnotes to suggest further, useful readings. This division helps to understand the different points of the unified trajectory of Paolo
Scheggi’s work where the absolute definition of form comes up against the thrill of a constant re-assessment of the work, between its extension in space and its metaphysical rarefaction.

ALIGHIERO BOETTI MINIMUM / MAXIMUM
edited by Serge Lemoine
edited by Luca Massimo Barbero

2017; Isbn 978-88-99534-33-2 EUR 49,00
Alberto Biasi is one of the major figures in Italian post-war art history. Forma Edizioni presents the catalogue of the exhibition on the occasion of the monographic exhibition at the Tornabuoni Art gallery in Paris in collaboration with the artist himself and curated by Serge Lemoine (Professor emeritus at the Sorbonne and previously director of the Musée d’Orsay in Paris). The publication presents a detailed history of Alberto Biasi’s life and work, comprehensively portrayed through the critical text by Lemoine. The text is enriched with images from historic archives, to introduce the complete collection of the works on show, with the addition of certain “iconic pieces” which have been milestones in the artist’s career.
This volume forms the catalogue of the exhibition to be held at the Fondazione Cini, in Venice, from May 12 to July 12, 2017. It represents a wonderful unprecedented journey inside the work of Alighiero Boetti. Alighiero Boetti: Minimum / Maximum is the result of an innovative process of selection and comparison between the minimum and maximum formats of works from the artist’s most iconic cycles. It focuses on one of the themes that best represents Boetti’s creative process. The theme of format is crucial for understanding the way in which Boetti conceived and realised his works, and is directly connected with a concept of time: the notion of the time required to realise an artwork. On a sensorial level, the minimum formats complement the larger works in dialectical opposition, characteristic of Boetti’s creative process. The exhibition is gradually developed in a comparison, point by point, between small and large scale, minimum and maximum, allowing the public to absorb and enjoy works from different periods in a single context.

ALIGHIERO BOETTI PHOTOCOPIES
ARNALDO POMODORO
edited by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Agata Boetti
essays by Bruno Corà
2017; Isbn 978-88-99534-34-9 EUR 49,00
2011; Isbn 978-88-96780-09-1 EUR 39,00
Alighiero Boetti. Photocopies is a special project developed by Hans Ulrich Obrist, artistic director of the Serpentine Gallery in London, and Agata Boetti, director of the Alighiero Boetti Archives, and is on show at the Fondazione Cini in Venice, in conjunction with Alighiero Boetti: Minimum / Maximum an exhibition curated by Luca Massimo Barbero. The project explores Boetti’s strongly dialectic thought process as it revolves around the theme of photocopies. The volume contains extensive written material, including an introductory essay by Obrist, another by Agata Boetti, a long, previously unpublished conversation between Agata Boetti and Obrist and two critical analyses by Michelle Cotton and Mario Garcia Torres respectively. The publication also includes the complete reproduction of 111 photocopied images originally bound in an elegant volume with a red cloth cover. This work combines candid photographs of certain moments of Alighiero’s private life and, at the same time, images of contemporary life and events recovered from newspapers and magazines; it represents a universal selection through its widespread appeal to all sections of the public.
The book retraces the career and works of the famous Italian sculptor through the illustration of more than fifty pieces selected from Pomodoro’s historical repertoire, some of which are on show at the exhibition, while others are an essential complement in representing the artist’s long and rich career as completely as possible. The works are introduced by a long critical essay by Bruno Corà written for the artist’s monographic exhibition held in Paris in 2011. The text provides the reader with a double reflection, not only on the unquestionable merit of Pomodoro’s works and the founding aspects of his artistic production, but also on the role played by his contribution to the Italian and international cultural scene. Certain texts written by the artist himself define and assist in understanding the different series of works in various stages of his sculptural production.
