Materia, luce e cura del dettaglio materials, light and attention to detail Davide Rota

Forme pulite rese con l’uso di pochi materiali ben amalgamati tra loro e la cura quasi maniacale del dettaglio. È questa la formula architettonica ricercata da dep studio per la creazione di un’architettura in grado di esprimere un intento progettuale apertis verbis, che non abbia bisogno di nascondersi dietro a fittizi orpelli decorativi o a soluzioni dell’ultim’ora. Un perfetto esempio di questo processo creativo è la casa N/S, un blocco monolitico caratterizzato da facciate grezze ma trattate in modo delicato che nasce all’interno di una realtà urbana poco qualificata; un progetto meticolosamente targato dai suoi creatori con il numero 001. Grazie alla sua semplicità e pulizia la residenza bifamiliare casa N/S è diventata il manifesto di questo giovanissimo studio, che si contraddistingue per la capacità di parlare un linguaggio troppe volte maltrattato e ingabbiato in preconcetti, spogliandolo dei difetti e donandogli una nuova disinvoltura concettuale. Laddove il pensiero comune pone l’accento su una semplificazione macabra della forma 6

Clean forms created with a sparing use of carefully amalgamated materials and an almost maniacal attention to details. This is the architectural formula pursued by dep studio to create an architecture capable of expressing an apertis verbis design intention that does not need to hide behind fake decorative frills or the latest trendy solutions. A perfect example of this creative process is the N/S house, a monolithic block characterized by facades that are rough yet treated in a delicate way, built in a rather indifferent urban setting; this project has been meticulously labelled number 001 by its authors. Thanks to its simplicity and cleanliness, this two-family dwelling has become the manifesto of a very young firm that distinguishes itself by its ability to speak a language that is too often maltreated and limited by prejudice, freeing it of defects and giving it a new conceptual nonchalance. Laddove il pensiero comune pone l’accento su una semplificazione macabra della forma e delle funzioni da attribuire allo stile minimalista, questa architettura risponde con un’operazione di “riduzione essenziale”, in grado di celare uno studio stratigrafico del progetto, partendo dall’ampia scala, fino a scendere nel dettaglio minimo. Where the common approach is to accentuate a macabre simplification of form and functions attributable to a minimalist style, this architecture responds with an operation of “essential reduction”, capable of concealing a stratigraphic study of the project, from the large scale whole to the tiniest detail.

Casa N/S sorge nelle immediate vicinanze del centro storico di un paese in provincia di Bergamo. La collocazione del lotto in un ambito caratterizzato da edifici di scarsa rilevanza architettonica ha portato a una scelta di cesura rispetto al contesto. Il desiderio del committente di realizzare un’abitazione da lasciare in futuro ai figli ha portato alla realizzazione di un edificio composto da due unità identiche e indipendenti ma con alcuni servizi in comune, come la taverna, le cantine, il garage e il giardino. La simmetria e il rigore formale che caratterizzano la composizione architettonica e l’uso di materiali autentici in grado di adattarsi al trascorrere del tempo riflettono le necessità personali, i sogni e il carattere dei committenti. La composizione planimetrica è dettata dalla forma pressoché quadrata del lotto e dalla richiesta di realizzare degli spazi privati autonomi e indipendenti uniti tra loro da un luogo di relazione. Quattro torri emergono dal terreno per due piani donando un forte rigore formale a tutto l’impianto: dei torrioni contemporanei che fungono da elemento di protezione degli 14

Casa N/S lies in the immediate vicinity of the old town of a village in the province of Bergamo. The plot is located in an area characterized by buildings without any great architectonic value, something that has made the architects decide to distinguish the building from its surroundings. The customer’s desire to build a home to leave to his children in the future has led to the realization of a building with two identical and independent units that share a number of facilities, as the tavern, the cellars, the garage and the garden. The symmetry and formal rigour that characterize the architectonic composition and the use of authentic materials that bear witness to the passing of time reflect the personal requirements, dreams and character of the customers. The plan is determined by the more or less square form of the plot and by the demand for private, autonomous and independent areas united to one another by communal spaces. Four towers emerge from the surrounding tissue, being two floors taller than the latter, giving the whole plan a strong formal rigour: contemporary towers that serve to protect the

L’area, già ampiamente urbanizzata, si trova in un ambito caratterizzato da edifici di scarsa rilevanza architettonica. La collocazione in un contesto ibrido e l’assenza di un linguaggio a cui riferirsi ha portato a una scelta di cesura. Già dalla strada il contrasto è forte, la connotazione contemporanea si riflette sia nel rigore compositivo delle forme che nell’utilizzo dei materiali generalmente riservati ad altre tipologie edilizie. Casa N/S is located just outside the old centre of a village in the province of Bergamo. The area, which is already extensively urbanized, is characterized by buildings of little architectonic importance. The hybrid context and the lack of a language with which to dialogue has made the architects opt for a break. The contrast is striking already when one approaches the building from the street; the contemporary nature is reflected both by the rigorous composition of the forms and the use of the materials, normally reserved for other types of buildings.

La simmetria e il rigore formale che caratterizzano l’impianto dell’edificio si ritrovano anche nella progettazione degli elementi esterni. Il materiale utilizzato è sempre il calcestruzzo, ma mentre le torri, con la loro presenza massiva, sono espressione del “senso del grave”, il cubo svuotato dell’ingresso si contrappone per la sua leggerezza. The symmetry and formal rigour characterizing the plan of the building is also reflected by the design of the external elements. The material is also in this case concrete, but while the towers, with their massive presence, express a “sense of gravity”, the empty cube at the entrance offsets them with its lightness.

Spesso i punti di criticità da risolvere diventano elementi di forza nella progettazione. La necessità di dare aerazione naturale all’autorimessa del piano interrato è stata risolta sostituendo il tradizionale grigliato con una vasca in lamiera che permette l’ingresso laterale di aria e luce attraverso lamelle orizzontali e contiene un orto pensile. La coltivazione dell’orto è agevolata dalla posizione sopraelevata. Per risolvere il dislivello tra la quota d’ingresso dell’edificio e la strada è stata utilizzata una fascia di contenimento in lamiera zincata che permette di avere tutto il giardino alla stessa quota e disegna i vialetti d’ingresso e i gradini realizzati in cemento. The most difficult problems often become the strong points of a project. The need to provide natural ventilation in the garage, placed in the basement, has been solved by replacing the traditional grid with a tray in sheet metal, that lets air and light in through horizontal plates, and that contains a hanging kitchen garden. The cultivation of the kitchen garden is facilitated by the raised position. To solve the difference in height between the entrance to the building and the street, a retaining wall has been created by using a strip of galvanized sheet metal, which makes it possible to keep the whole garden on the same level, and which frames the path to the entrance and the concrete steps.

Ogni facciata delle quattro torri è stata attentamente studiata in fase di progettazione, consentendo all’impresa esecutrice di avere già al momento dell’ordine del materiale dei disegni esecutivi estremamente dettagliati dei casseri da realizzare con indicate le aperture, le forometrie e ogni quota necessaria al loro posizionamento. Quattro differenti dimensioni di finestre si alternano nelle torri componendosi in maniera diversa in ogni prospetto. La disposizione delle aperture può apparire casuale mentre ogni finestra è stata posizionata su una rigida griglia compositiva tenendo conto delle visuali offerte dal contesto. Every side of the four towers has been carefully studied during the planning phase, to provide the builder with extremely detailed executive drawings of the formwork to realize already when ordering the materials, with indication of doors and windows, their dimension and all heights necessary for their placement. Four different window sizes are alternated in the towers, with different compositions on every facade. The arrangement of the openings may seem casual, but every window has been positioned according to a rigid composition, considering the views offered by the surroundings.

Paola Belussi (Sarnico, 1972) si laurea al Politecnico di Milano nel 1997 e da subito svolge la libera professione dedicandosi al tema del restauro monumentale e della progettazione urbanistica. David Moriggia (Lovere, 1979) si laurea al Politecnico di Milano nel 2004 e si forma nello studio dell’arch. Gualtiero Oberti affrontando progetti di restauro e di nuove costruzioni seguendo i progetti dalle prime fasi ideative fino alla loro realizzazione con un’attenzione particolare al dettaglio architettonico. Nel 2006 si associano per il progetto Edifici sul fiume Oglio e fondano il dep studio occupandosi di progettazione architettonica, recupero del costruito e design, sia per committenti pubblici che privati. Ogni progetto evidenzia la continua ricerca e sperimentazione, si esprime in modo semplice ed essenziale selezionando le forme e le tecnologie per ottenere il massimo risultato espressivo con il minimo sforzo formale. Nel giugno 2010 espongono i loro lavori alla Festa dell’Architettura presso la Casa dell’Architettura di Roma e a dicembre dello stesso anno partecipano alla mostra Progetti di giovani architetti italiani organizzata alla Triennale di Milano. 60

Nel gennaio 2011 il progetto Casa N/S risulta finalista al Premio OAB 2010 indetto dall’Ordine degli Architetti di Bergamo, a febbraio partecipano al brain storming organizzato presso l’Ordine degli Architetti di Bergamo moderato da Luigi Prestinenza Puglisi e a maggio partecipano all’evento Spot On Architecture presentando i loro lavori alla Facoltà di Architettura dell’Università degli Studi di Firenze. Tra i loro lavori più recenti si segnala il restauro della Funicolare di San Pellegrino – Vetta, che dopo un delicato intervento di restauro della copertura lignea e delle facciate ha riconsegnato alla comunità un edificio abbandonato da tempo ora destinato a mostre temporanee. L’intervento fa parte di una serie di iniziative che culmineranno nei prossimi anni nella rimessa in funzione della funicolare. È attualmente in corso la realizzazione di Casa ZII (Paratico, BS), un edificio prefabbricato in legno ad elevate prestazioni energetiche.

Paola Belussi (Sarnico, 1972) graduated from the Milan Polytechnic in 1997 and immediately began to work as an independent professional, dedicating herself to the restoration of monuments and to town planning. David Moriggia (Lovere, 1979) graduated from the Milan Polytechnic in 2004 and received his professional training at the firm of architect Gualtiero Oberti, working on restoration projects and new constructions, following the plans from the initial ideas to their construction, with particular attention to architectonic details. In 2006 they joined forces to complete the Buildings on the river Oglio project, and founded dep studio, specializing in architectural planning, building renovation and design, working with both public and private customers. Each project bears witness to an uninterrupted research and experimentation, and is expressed with simple and essential means by choosing forms and technologies capable of obtaining the greatest expressive result with the least formal effort. In June 2010 they presented their works at the Festa dell’Architettura at the Casa dell’Architettura in Rome, and in December of the same year they participated in the exhibition Projects by young Italian architects organized at the Triennale of Milan. In January 2011 the project Casa N/S was shortlisted for

the OAB 2010 Prize announced by the Architects’ Association of Bergamo, in February they participated in the brain storming organized at the Architects’ Association of Bergamo, led by Luigi Prestinenza Puglisi, and in May they participated in the event Spot On Architecture, presenting their works at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Florence. Their latest works comprise the restoration of the San Pellegrino – Vetta funicular. After a delicate renovation of the wooden roof and walls, this building that has been in disuse for some time has been returned to the community, and is now used for temporary exhibitions. The project is part of a series of initiatives that will culminate in a few years, when the funicular will once more become operational. The construction of the Casa ZII (Paratico, Brescia) is currently in progress; it is a matter of a prefabricated building in wood with high energy performance.
