Towards the end of the 1960s, Alighiero managed to convince a friend who was building what was to be an “amphibious” car to lend it to him for a weekend. Cars work on roads, so the idea that one could also go on water fascinated and intrigued Alighiero.

Unbelievable! Hijacking the original function of the car. Going always one step further. The adventure of the car was quick and effective: he went on long drives, eagerly awaiting the moment when he could take it into the sea. The car entered the water and promptly broke down. Alighiero abandoned it on the beach, happy to have had the experience.

Hijacking original functions is what Boetti always loved doing, as can be seen with the letters and stamps he used for his Lavori Postali [Postal Works] and the Dossier Postale [Postal Dossier]. We also see it with the telegrams for his wonderful work Serie di merli disposti ad intervalli regolari lungo gli spalti di una muraglia [Series of battlements arranged at regular intervals along the bastions of a wall], and the ballpoint pen for his Biro. It also appears through the many everyday objects he rubbed or traced out for his Tutto [Everything], and in his works on paper.

The same thing naturally occurred in the case of the photocopier: a machine designed for offices, where it was used to make copies of papers, to reproduce commonplace, every day work documents. Certainly nothing with any artistic ambitions.

Boetti first took an interest in photocopiers in 1969, and indeed he went to the Rank Xerox showroom on the other side of Turin to see these machines, which were extremely rare at the time. He was not interested in finding out how they worked or how he could change them, but in hijacking their function and investigating their “sensorial abilities”. So Boetti never dismantled the photocopier, nor did he use it to duplicate official documents. Rather, he forced it to follow his thoughts and his mental

Verso la fine degli anni Sessanta, Alighiero era riuscito a convincere un amico, che stava lavorando alla fabbricazione di una macchina “anfibia”, di prestargliela per un week-end.

Una macchina funziona sulle strade, l’idea che potesse andare anche nell’acqua ha subito affascinato e intrigato Alighiero. Fantastico! Dirottare la funzione originale della macchina.

Andare sempre più in là. L’avventura della macchina fu efficace e rapida: fece dei grandi giri, aspettando con eccitazione il momento in cui sarebbe entrato nel mare. La macchina si bloccò nell’acqua e Alighiero l’abbandonò sulla spiaggia, felice dell’esperienza.

Dirottare la funzione originale è quello che Boetti ha sempre amato fare: le lettere e i francobolli, usati per i suoi Lavori Postali o il Dossier Postale, i telegrammi per la sua meravigliosa opera Serie di merli disposti ad intervalli regolari lungo gli spalti di una muraglia, la penna a biro per le sue Biro, i numerosi oggetti del quotidiano usati, massaggiati o ricalcati per i suoi Tutto o le sue opere su carta.

Avvenne naturalmente la stessa cosa per la fotocopiatrice: una macchina concepita per effettuare copie di documenti cartacei, prevista per gli uffici, per copiare documenti banali, quotidiani e di lavoro. Certamente senza alcuna aspirazione artistica.

Boetti si interessa già nel 1969 alla fotocopiatrice, al punto da attraversare Torino per scoprire queste macchine all’epoca così rare allo show room della Rank Xerox.

Se ne interessa non per scoprirne il funzionamento o modificarlo, ma per dirottarne la sua funzione e per indagarne le sue “capacità sensoriali”. Boetti, dunque, non smonta la fotocopiatrice, né l’utilizza per duplicare documenti ufficiali. Piuttosto la obbliga a seguire i suoi pensieri e le sue ricerche mentali e temporali. Boetti fotocopia dei pulcini in movimento, le mani di mio fratello e le mie facendo copiare dal vivo un apparecchio che abitualmente fotocopia cose senza vita. er”, but as a “captain of industry”. He always considered himself a “director of art”, with assistants and collaborators to whom he delegated work (and not just subordinate and executive, but actually creative work) and, in the 1990s, Alighiero continued to be a director but now of Hollywood films, with massive productions, great formats and huge quantities.

We have now become used to an incredible proliferation of images, which we absorb every day from television, advertising and, especially, from the Internet.

We receive images on our mobile phones, by e-mail and through social networks.

Right from the outset, Boetti was fascinated by new technologies, such as the telegram, Polaroids, photocopiers and fax machines. To explore all their possibilities and to go beyond. To save time. To have more time to reflect on time. To be always faster, like his beloved Concorde, a Polaroid, a photocopy or a fax. The last application that Boetti discovered was the fax, which was certainly the one he made least use of, due to a lack of time, despite his immense desire to hijack its original function, once again.

He had, however, imagined a wonderful new project, the Fax Agency, which he suggested sharing with Hans Ulrich Obrist, “the protagonist of the greatest development of transmission”, as Annemarie had dubbed it. But wasn’t the Fax Agency that Alighiero imagined twenty-five years ago today’s Instagram? Pictures shared with thousands of people simply for their beauty, uniqueness, interest or amusement.

Boetti sadly did not have time to discover the Internet and the countless possibilities it would have offered him. Right from the 1980s, Boetti wondered how to leave a trace of so much information about the world. How could he not forget a world of images of everyday life? Pictures on paper had a very brief life in those days, because as soon as a magazine had been read, it almost always ended up in the bin.

There was no Internet “cloud” back then…

Already in 1984, Boetti had said about his Copertine [Magazine covers]: “Of those millions of pictures, reduced to a few hundred, in the end only this faded copy of a brightly coloured age will remain.” His Copertine were hundreds of pictures meticulously traced by hand, in black and white – “luxury photocopies”, as I used to call them when I was a child. These hundreds of “luxury photocopies” of the 1980s later became thousands of photocopies in the 1990s. More and more. Boetti loved Shiva’s hands and, since he could not have them, he delegated, using the hands of his assistants and anonymous embroiderers. By photocopying, Boetti found even more new assistants, no end of them, throughout the world, on all horizons: he delegated to the photocopier, to magazine editors, photographers, to the senders of letters, and to all the creators of the countless images on paper that became photocopies. A sort of constellation – an anonymous, choral and collegial work.

Like this, Boetti told us of a world that was both his and ours. Remaking the world, or rather Mettere al mondo il mondo [Bringing the world into the world], with the primeval instruments of knowledge: numbers, alphabets, codes and simple beauty, which we had before our eyes every day, but which were foreign to us.

Internet. Riceviamo immagini sul cellulare, via email e attraverso i social. Boetti è stato fin da subito affascinato dalle nuove tecnologie, come il telegramma, la Polaroid, la fotocopiatrice e il fax. Esplorare tutte le loro possibilità ed andare oltre. Guadagnare tempo.

Per avere sempre più tempo di riflettere sul tempo. Per essere sempre più rapidi, come il suo amatissimo Concorde, una Polaroid, una fotocopia o un fax. L’ultima applicazione che Boetti scoprì fu il fax, sicuramente il meno sfruttato da lui, per mancanza di tempo, malgrado la voglia immensa di dirottarne anche in questo caso la sua funzione iniziale.

Aveva però immaginato un nuovo progetto bellissimo, l’Agenzia Fax che aveva proposto di condividere con Hans Ulrich Obrist, “il protagonista del massimo sviluppo della trasmissione”, come lo aveva qualificato Annemarie. L’Agenzia Fax immaginata venticinque anni fa da Alighiero, non sarebbe oggi Instagram? Immagini condivise con migliaia di persone scelte semplicemente per la loro bellezza, unicità, interesse o divertimento.

Boetti non ha purtroppo avuto il tempo di scoprire Internet e le mille e più possibilità che avrebbe potuto offrirgli. Sin da gli anni Ottanta, Boetti si domandava come lasciare traccia di così tante informazioni del mondo. Come non dimenticare un mondo di immagini del quotidiano? La durata di vita delle immagini cartacee a quell’epoca era molto breve perché immediatamente, alla fine della lettura delle riviste, le immagini finivano quasi sempre nella spazzatura. All’epoca non c’erano i Cloud di Interet…

Già nel 1984 Boetti aveva detto a proposito delle sue Copertine: “Di quei milioni di immagini, ridotte a qualche centinaio, poi rimarrà solo questa copia sbiadita di un tempo coloratissimo”. Le sue Copertine erano centinaia di immagini meticolosamente ricalcate a mano, in bianco e nero, “fotocopie di lusso”, come le definivo da bambina.

Queste centinaia di “fotocopie di lusso” negli anni Ottanta sono poi diventate negli anni Novanta migliaia di fotocopie. Sempre di più. Boetti amava le mani di Shiva e non potendo averle, delegava, usando le mani degli assistenti, delle ricamatrici e degli anonimi.

Fotocopiando, Boetti aveva trovato ancora nuovi assistenti, numerosissimi, nel mondo intero, di tutti gli orizzonti: delegava alla fotocopiatrice, e ai redattori delle riviste, ai fotografi, ai mittenti delle lettere, e a tutti i creatori delle numerose immagini cartacee diventate fotocopie. Una sorta di costellazione, un lavoro anonimo corale e collegiale.

Così Boetti ci ha raccontato un mondo, il suo e anche il nostro. Rifare un mondo o piuttosto Mettere al mondo il mondo, con strumenti primordiali della conoscenza: i numeri, gli alfabeti, i codici e le semplici bellezze, che pur essendo sotto i nostri occhi quotidianamente, ci erano ancora estranei.

AB But they are actually very different works. Except for the fact that in both cases Alighiero used envelopes and stamps. This is without a doubt one of my favourite works, but I think it is not as well-known as others because it is less “aesthetic” than Lavori Postali or Mappe. Here too, Alighiero diverted the principle of a means of communication.

When he created Dossier Postale in 1969, Alighiero was not yet obsessed with the idea of proliferation and preservation of images. In this work, the photocopies had another function, more cerebral; one could almost say – more conceptual: an attempt to show what the initial work is not able to show us. In Dossier Postale, Alighiero diverted the function of the sender: normally, when writing a letter, the sender writes his name and address on the back of the envelope so that the letter can be returned in case it does not reach its destination. Alighiero wrote to carefully selected imaginary addressees so that his letters would return to him. So, the address of the sender was an essential part of the work’s construction progress. Alighiero created an extremely solitary game and correspondence! He didn’t need anyone else in order to play and create! Perhaps it recalled distant memories of his mother who loved to play solitaire card games. Something that Alighiero played very often as well.

Talking about this work, Alighiero said: “In spite of appearances, I am both the sender and the receiver.”

Before he began his Dossier Postale, Alighiero chose 25 “characters” among friends, acquaintances and family members (even a baby, my brother, Matteo). The number 25 was not chosen by accident: it is the number of letters in the Italian alphabet. For each of his characters, Alighiero organised an imaginary journey with an itinerary composed of several stops, selected according to a specific logic. The letters were all returned to the sender, in other words, to Alighiero in Turin. As soon as he received the envelopes, he immediately photocopied them on both sides, preserved the photocopies, then inserted the letter inside a new envelope and sent it on to the next stage of the journey he had planned. At each stop, the envelopes increased in size and became thicker and thicker!

The other great photocopied work from 1969 was Dossier Postale which was rather like Lavori Postali.

L’altra grande opera fotocopiata del 1969 è il Dossier Postale, che molti assimilano ai Lavori Postali.

AB Assolutamente alcun legame. A parte il fatto che in entrambi i casi Alighiero utilizzò delle buste e dei francobolli. Senz’altro è una delle mie opere preferite, ma penso che sia meno conosciuta perché meno “estetica” dei Lavori Postali o delle Mappe. Anche qui, Alighiero stravolge il principio di un mezzo di comunicazione. In occasione della realizzazione del Dossier Postale, nel 1969, Alighiero non aveva ancora l’ossessione di una proliferazione di immagini, e di come preservarle. In quest’opera, le fotocopie hanno un’altra funzione, più mentale, si potrebbe dire anche più concettuale: quella di mostrare quel che l’opera iniziale non può mostrarci. Nel Dossier Postale, Alighiero ha stravolto la funzione del mittente: di solito quando si scrive una lettera, sul retro della busta si mette il nostro nome, perché, nel caso la lettera non giunga al destinatario, possa tornare indietro. Alighiero metteva degli indirizzi immaginari ai destinatari prescelti, perché le lettere gli tornassero indietro. L’indirizzo del mittente era pertanto essenziale perché progredisse la costruzione della sua opera. Alighiero aveva creato un gioco e una corrispondenza estremamente solitaria! Non aveva bisogno di nessuno per giocare e creare! Forse un lontano ricordo di sua madre, che adorava fare i solitari con le carte; una cosa che anche Alighiero faceva sempre.

A proposito di questa opera, Alighiero aveva detto: “Mittente e destinatario sono sempre io, a parte il gioco delle apparenze”.

Prima di cominciare il suo Dossier Postale, Alighiero aveva dunque scelto 25 “personaggi” – amici, conoscenti e parenti (come Matteo neonato!). Il numero di 25 non è scelto a caso: si tratta del numero di lettere dell’alfabeto italiano. Per ciascuno di questi personaggi, Alighiero ha organizzato un viaggio immaginario con un itinerario stabilito secondo una logica particolare, in varie tappe. Le lettere erano dunque rispedite al mittente, cioè ad Alighiero a Torino. Appena arrivate, fotocopiava immediatamente la busta fronte e retro, mettendo da parte le fotocopie, quindi la inseriva in una nuova busta e la rispediva verso la tappa seguente del viaggio che aveva immaginato. Quindi, da un viaggio all’altro, la busta aumentava di dimensioni e diventava sempre più spessa!

he admitted quite openly to Rank Xerox that he had wrecked the machine by putting it out in the rain, however, they refused to give him another one.

The beginning of the 1980s was quite a hard time for him: he had financial problems, he could no longer travel to Afghanistan because of the war, his mother had died, and Annemarie had decided to leave him. He was in a bad way and decided to leave his studio in the Trastevere to go and live in via Fratelli Bandiera where you met him. So, he spent a few years without a studio and he did not have much room, either physically or mentally, for a photocopier. The next machine arrived at the end of 1986 when he moved to his new studio near the Pantheon.

There was only that brief experiment with photocopies between 1969 and 1986 in Todi where we had fun copying everything around us, including the rain. But those that are considered true artworks, are his historic photocopy works between 1969 and 1971, and those at the end of his career in the late 1980s, which express a totally different way of thinking: information and profusion.

So, there was an initial period in 1969 with the idea of the postal works that can be linked with conceptual artists like Seth Sieglaub or Lucy Lippard – the dematerialisation of art – and then, another at the end of the 1980s, which is when I met him, when he was producing on a daily basis, since he had a photocopier in his studio.

AB Yes, in the late 1960s, Alighiero used the photocopier for more conceptual research. At the end of the 1980s, he was increasingly more focused on the profusion of images and news printed on paper with which he filled his studio in Rome near the Pantheon. He was obsessed with time: he felt the need to store images that would have disappeared very rapidly in a period where news was not yet computerised.

He had already started to wage a battle against time when he created his Copertine; hundreds of magazine covers painstakingly traced by Bobo, his assistant, to preserve the content of an entire year. He used to tell me: “the Copertine are like copies of books before the age of printing, when every book had to be copied by hand”.

Boetti created books completely composed of Copertine photocopies. Beginning with the ‘noble’ versions, hand-drawn in pencil, the images of these covers were reduced to half-size and photocopied to become these small books that expressed Boetti’s desire for widespread profusion of images.

Yes, I remember now, once when I spent an afternoon with Alighiero in his apartment in Paris, browsing through his photocopy books, I noticed that the Copertine photocopy books were smaller in size than the standard A4 he normally used. So, it was a pocket version, then.

AB Yes, only the Copertine books made in 1984, 1986 and 1988 were printed in small format. For example, in the book titled 1984, which is the work that will be on show at the Cini Foundation, contains all the covers of the 1984 work, completely hand-drawn in pencil, which is about 6 metres long. So, they were small format books, always printed in small editions of 11 or 34 copies. Alighiero liked to transform these monumentally sized Copertine works into “pocket versions”. But whether they were monumental or miniature in size, all had the same precision and elegance.

Then, of course, there were the A4 works, the 111 and I quindici libri rossi-111 [Fifteen red books-111]: the collections of photocopies bound with a red cover, like a diario, or personal diary.

Tra il 1969 e il 1986 ci fu dunque solo questa breve esperienza fotocopiatrice a Todi, dove ci eravamo divertiti a fotocopiare tutto quello che ci circondava, compresa la pioggia. Ma per quanto riguarda le vere e proprie opere con le fotocopie, si considerano quelle storiche, tra il 1969 e il 1971, e quelle della fine della sua carriera, alla fine degli anni Ottanta che, secondo me, esprimono un modo di pensare completamente diverso: informazione e profusione.

C’è dunque un primo periodo, nel 1969, con l’idea delle opere postali, che si può mettere in relazione con artisti concettuali quali Seth Sieglaub o Lucy Lippard – la smaterializzazione dell’arte – e poi la fine degli anni Ottanta, che è il periodo in cui l’ho conosciuto, e durante il quale la sua pratica è quotidiana, poiché ha una fotocopiatrice nel suo atelier.

AB Se alla fine degli anni Sessanta utilizza la fotocopiatrice per delle ricerche più concettuali, alla fine degli anni Ottanta Alighiero è sempre più affascinato dalla profusione delle immagini e dell’informazione su carta, di cui riempie il suo studio romano a due passi dal Pantheon. Ossessionato dal tempo, ama accumulare queste immagini che sarebbero rapidamente scomparse in quell’epoca in cui le informazioni non erano ancora digitalizzate.

Aveva già cominciato ad affrontare questa lotta contro il tempo realizzando le sue Copertine: centinaia di copertine di rivista, minuziosamente ricalcate da Bobo, il suo assistente, per ricreare un anno intero. “Le Copertine sono come le copie di libri prima dell’invenzione della stampa, quando bisognava ricopiarli a mano”, mi diceva. A partire dalle Copertine, Boetti creava dei libri, realizzati interamente con delle fotocopie. A partire dalle copie “nobili”, fatte a mano e con la matita, queste immagini di copertine erano fotocopiate, ridotte a metà, per diventare questi piccoli libri che esprimevano la volontà di profusione di immagini di Boetti.

Tra l’altro mi ricordo che, un pomeriggio passato nell’appartamento parigino di Alighiero a St.-Germain a sfogliare i suoi libri di fotocopie, mi sono accorto che i libri di Copertine fotocopiate erano in un formato più piccolo dell’A4 che usava di solito. Un’opera “portatile” quindi?

AB Sì, solo questi libri di Copertine, fatti nell’84, ’86 e ’88, sono in formato ridotto. Nel libro 1984, per esempio, che è l’opera che sarà esposta alla Cini, ci sono tutte le copertine che ci sono nell’opera 1984 di sei metri realizzate a matita. Sono quindi dei piccoli formati, e sempre delle piccole tirature, da 11 a 34 esemplari. Ad Alighiero piaceva trasformare queste opere monumentali che sono le Copertine in “tascabili”. Monumentali o in miniatura, presentano la stessa precisione e la stessa eleganza.

E poi in A4 ci sono il 111 e I quindici libri rossi-111, questi insiemi di fotocopie rilegate in rosso, come un diario privato.
