Everybody who stepped into the apartment in Piazza Sant’Apollonia in Rome (even though the studio overlooked another square, Piazza of Santa Maria, the very heart of the ancient, popular neighbourhood of Trastevere) could see a peculiar experiment of collective thought-sharing through image. It was the smartest, the least commercial, the most diverse and yet the most consistent, the least ‘aesthetic’ and at the same time the most ‘beautiful’ work possible. Indeed, it was something that was difficult to identify as a ‘work’, something that fluctuated between life and art, somewhere in the always-vague intersection of these two dimensions. It was a wall1, or better to say it was the Muro [Wall]: the inner partition of a normal apartment that would support an heterogeneous assembly of simple, beguiling objects, something that would soon end up in an exhibition. Alighiero e Boetti had the habit of pinning to the wall the most disparate images, but among the walls of the apartment, one in particular had taken on a different role and a strong emblematic quality. It was a wall graced with a long fluctuating life, which was about to accompany Boetti in different periods and circumstances. Taking inspiration from this very wall, Annemarie Sauzeau (who was Boetti’s wife when the Muro was conceived) in 2001, several years after Alighiero’s death, had the idea of the book Shaman/Showman (Annemarie Sauzeau, Alighiero E Boetti “Shaman/Showman”, Turin, 2001), an album of souvenirs, without pretences of philological completeness, but a book which illuminated Boetti’s work, offering a finely crafted, acute and punctual interpretation of it. While putting together this book, taking inspiration from the Wall, we want to remember, in a direct and indirect manner, both Alighiero and Annemarie – in a way, we are duplicating the work of Shaman/Showman. And

Chi entrava nella casa di piazza Sant’Apollonia a Roma (lo studio però affacciava su un’altra piazza: quella Santa Maria cuore del rione antico e popolare di Trastevere) poteva vedere uno strano esperimento di messa in comune del pensiero collettivo attraverso le immagini; l’opera più intelligente e meno commerciale, la più composita e la più coerente, la meno “estetica” e la più “bella” che ci si potesse aspettare; qualcosa anzi che era difficile riconoscere come opera, qualcosa che si situava fluttuante tra la sfera della vita e quella dell’arte, nella sempre incerta intersezione tra le due. Si trattava di un muro1, anzi del Muro, la parete di un normale appartamento che faceva da supporto a un’eterogenea congerie di cose semplici e affascinanti e che di lì a poco sarebbe finita addirittura in mostra. Era uso di Alighiero e Boetti fissare al muro le immagini più disparate, ma, tra le varie pareti una in particolare aveva assunto un ruolo diverso, una forza, un emblematico statuto. Un Muro che aveva “vita fluttuante” e lunga accompagnando Boetti in diverse fasi e circostanze. E proprio a modello di questo Muro Annemarie Sauzeau (sposa di Boetti al momento della nascita del Muro) nel 2001, diversi anni dopo la scomparsa di Alighiero, aveva concepito il libro Shaman/Showman (Annemarie Sauzeau, Alighiero E Boetti “Shaman/Showman”, Torino, 2001), un album di “ricordi”, senza pretese filologiche o di definitiva completezza, che però diceva moltissimo sul lavoro, fornendone in filigrana un’interpretazione acuta e puntuale. Costruendo ora questo libro a modello del Muro ricordiamo, direttamente e indirettamente, Alighiero e Annemarie e in qualche modo “doppiamo” l’operazione di Shaman/Showman. Ma non solo: in questo caso il libro è composto, assemblato, disposto come il Muro anche graficamente, direi quasi fisicamente, e a tal

cher Kunstverein Munster; Kunstmuseum Luzern, 1992-93. Finally it was on show again in 2013 at the MAMCO in Geneva, at an event thrown in homage to Boetti, where his drums were also exhibited (Salvo played the guitar, and it seems that the two had really applied together for selection at the Sanremo Festival!). Alighiero would hang all sort of thing on the walls: after a trial period, the most appreciated objects were framed.

‘Some objects became part of his wall, others were modified, worked upon, or integrated in later works, others would simply remain on the wall, for pure visual pleasure’. (Agata Boetti, op.cit., p. 26).

We publish here as an Appendix the list of images of the wall, painstakingly assembled by Annemarie Sauzeau together with her daughter Agata. This list contains – beside a variety of Boetti’s works – lottery tickets, a pocket embroidered in Morocco, various stamps, some photo souvenirs (among them, the very cherished one, already published, of Boetti with little Matteo in Afghanistan), drawings by Agata, the cover of the book of the psychiatrist Jervis, a manuscript of the beloved poet Sandro Penna, some invitations for his exhibits, photographs by Colombo, Gorgoni, Pellion, plus many small works by several artists. More numerous are those by Salvo; then there is the four-handed Fold with Sol LeWitt, the Cuban Ramon Alejandro, whom he met in 1963 at the Friedlander atelier in Paris, Mario Schifano, Vettor Pisani, Francesco Clemente, Sandro Chia, Mimmo Germanà, Marco Tirelli, Felice Levini, Carlo Saint Just, Biagio Caldarelli, Piero Di Terlizzi, Bizhan Bassiri.

This project features, remarkably, a hydraulic system hidden inside the sculpture, similar to what would be planned many years later in his Autoritratto-Fontana [Fountain Self-Portrait].

Agata Boetti quotes her father’s words about Palla corda: “The pallacorda game is related also to a very important political event! The Pallacorda oath, in the Jeu de Paume room in Paris, was the birth of the Declaration of the Human Rights and of the French Constitution in 1789! On that occasion they held the world in their hands! Therefore, I made a sculpture which is an allegory of a very, very important historical event! Too bad that the baby girl is so disappointed, because she cannot play that game.

You cannot play with it: it’s not a cup-and-ball, nor is it a real pallacorda game. The work is made of wood, metal, and rope, so the ball cannot be thrown or bounced. The rope is tightly wound up, and it’s so long that, if it were a cup-and-ball, the ball would bounce a hundred metres away!

Plus, the pallacorda game takes place on a horizontal surface: instead my sculpture is vertical. The meaning of such work, by consequence, is to transform the horizontal dimension into a vertical dimension.” This work was resumed in the 1980s. By coincidence, the Rome gallery of Sperone was in those years situated in the ancient ‘Via di Pallacorda’. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the pallacorda was a very popular sport in Rome : it was during a fight over this game that Caravaggio killed Ranuccio Tomassoni on the 29th May 1606, in the Campo Marzio neighbourhood.

He was perhaps the critic that first, and always, believed in Boetti more than any other; he invited him to his first one-man show in a European Museum, at the Kunsthalle of Basel in 1978, and he gave him the Jurors’ honourable mention at the Venice Biennale of 1990.

Lara Favaretto’s tribute to Alighiero Boetti highlights the similarity between their planning methodologies. After choosing five of Boetti’s works – Lampada annuale [Annual Lamp] 1966, Eternit [Eternit cement] 1967, Untitled, 1967 (destroyed work), Contatore [Metre] 1967, Niente da vedere niente da nascondere [Nothing to see nothing to hide] 1969 – Favaretto selected images from her personal archive, surmising from their resemblance or contrast, a possible conceptual connection to the artworks to which they refer.

Alighiero appendeva di tutto alle pareti, dopo un periodo di prova i materiali più apprezzati venivano incorniciati. “Alcuni diventavano parte del suo Muro, altri erano sottoposti a modifiche, interventi o integrati in future opere, altri ancora rimanevano semplicemente appesi alla parete per il piacere visivo” (Agata Boetti, op.cit., p. 26).

Pubblichiamo in appendice la lista delle immagini del muro, faticosamente stilata da Annemarie Sauzeau con la figlia Agata. Vi si trovano, oltre a sue varie opere, biglietti della lotteria, una tasca ricamata in Marocco, vari francobolli, alcune foto souvenir (tra cui quella molto amata e pubblicata con il piccolo Matteo in Afghanistan), disegni di Agata, la copertina del libro dello psichiatra Jervis, un foglio manoscritto dell’amatissimo poeta Sandro Penna, alcuni inviti alle sue mostre, fotografie di Colombo, Gorgoni, Pellion e opere di piccolo formato di molti artisti.

Le più numerose sono quelle di Salvo, poi Fold a quattro mani con Sol LeWitt, il cubano Ramon Alejandro conosciuto nel 1963 nell’atelier Friedlander a Parigi, Mario Schifano, Vettor Pisani, Francesco Clemente, Sandro Chia, Mimmo Germanà, Marco Tirelli, Felice Levini, Carlo Saint Just, Biagio Caldarelli, Piero Di Terlizzi, Bizhan Bassiri.

Devo quest’ultima osservazione a Michele Casamonti.

Notevole in questo progetto è anche la previsione di un sistema idraulico celato all’interno del monumento, analogamente a quanto avverrà molto tempo dopo con l’Autoritratto-Fontana.

Agata Boetti riporta le parole del padre a proposito di Palla corda: “La pallacorda è legata anche a un evento politico estremamente importante! Il giuramento della Pallacorda, nella sala del Jeu de Paume a Parigi costituì la nascita della Dichirazione dei diritti dell’uomo e della Costituzione francese nel 1789! In quell’occasione tenevano il mondo nelle loro mani! Ho fatto dunque una scultura allegorica di un evento storico importantissimo!”. Solo che la bambina delusa si rende conto che non può giocarci. “Non puoi giocarci né come un ‘bilboquet’ né come il vero gioco della pallacorda. L’opera è fatta di legno, metallo e corda. La palla non può dunque essere lanciata né fatta rimbalzare. La corda è avvolta con cura ed è così lunga che se fosse un ‘bilboquet’, la palla andrebbe a un centinaio di metri! Se il gioco della pallacorda si svolge su un terreno orizzontale, la mia scultura è verticale”. Il senso del lavoro è dunque quello di trasformare l’orizzontalità in verticalità.

L’opera viene ripresa negli anni Ottanta. Per una “coincidenza” la galleria romana di Sperone in quegli anni ha sede nell’antica via di Pallacorda.

Nel Cinquecento e nel Seicento la pallacorda era un gioco diffuso a Roma e fu per una lite a questo gioco che Caravaggio uccise Ranuccio Tomassoni il 29 maggio del 1606 nel rione di Campo Marzio.

Forse il critico che dall’inizio e per sempre aveva creduto di più in Boetti, chiamandolo per la sua prima personale in un museo europeo alla Kunsthalle di Basilea nel ’78, attribuendogli la menzione d’onore della Giuria alla Biennale di Venezia del ’90.

Il tributo di Lara Favaretto ad Alighiero Boetti evidenzia un’affinità metodologica relativa alla fase progettuale. Favaretto, dopo aver scelto cinque opere di Boetti – Lampada annuale, 1966; Eternit, 1967; Untitled, 1967 – opera distrutta; Contatore, 1967; Niente da vedere niente da nascondere, 1969 ha selezionato alcune immagini provenienti dall’archivio personale associando e ipotizzando, per contrasto o affinità, possibili connessioni concettuali con le opere a cui fanno riferimento.

‘Correre, scorrere, rincorrere, decorrere’ (Running, flowing, chasing, following) are the words we read in an embroidery by Alighiero Boetti. I find myself chasing after certain memories from the time of the ‘book of rivers’. Time never ceases to follow on from those infinitely distant 1970s and the waters of the Tiber flow now as they did back then (even though it’s clear the water is never the same). We are caught in the flow of time and I find myself alone, today, talking to you about this book. Without Alighiero, I feel I am only half here, for it was he who thought up the conceptual challenge that underlies Classifying, while I was just the manual worker – the convinced, tenacious artisan, and the one who weaved relationships and gathered the threads of information for about five years.

Writing thirty years later about the adventure of the thousand rivers can only be a faint (might I say “watered down”?) – appendix to the brief introduction in the book, in which I put down all that we had taken from that voyage of the mind.

So far, I have avoided adding anything else. But this is no normal occasion, so I will make an exception and invite my reader to enter into a brief appendixnovel, let’s say, on the background of the thousand rivers.

I’d like to be able to show the books, atlases, maps, tables and graphics in so many languages and alphabets that came to us through the post in those years but I can’t. The ‘trunk of rivers’ got lost – as might happen to a raft – abandoned and even forgotten, just a few years after the book was published, in one of the author’s existential periods that was like a flood, a devastating wall of water that swept away so many precious things.

Fiumi [Rivers] – the book and the end product – did of course remain, and it even had its own bibliography.

Not that long ago, however, I found a bundle of letters I thought had ended up on the raft together with the atlases and books. They were in a great envelope with ‘A History of the Book of the 1000 Rivers’ handwritten upon it, with 203 neatly ordered letters from 1970 to 1975.

I shall tell you some of what went through my mind as I looked through them again.

They are all replies to my letters (of which I have no copies) but I can more or less deduce what my

“Correre, scorrere, rincorrere, decorrere…”, così si legge in un ricamo di Alighiero Boetti. Ora io rincorro certi ricordi dei tempi del “libro dei fiumi”, il tempo decorre inesorabilmente da quegli anni Settanta infinitamente lontani, le acque del Tevere scorrono ora come scorrevano allora (anche se – si sa – non è mai la stessa acqua). Insomma siamo presi nel fluire del tempo e mi ritrovo da sola oggi a parlarvi di questo libro. Mi sento dimezzata in assenza di Alighiero il quale è stato l’ideatore della scommessa concettuale che fonda Classifying, mentre io ne sono stata soltanto la mano d’opera, l’artigiana convinta e tenace, quella che ha tessuto i rapporti e raccolto i fili dell’informazione per circa cinque anni.

Scrivere dopo trenta anni sull’avventura dei mille fiumi non può che essere un’appendice assai poco essenziale (diremo annacquata?) rispetto alla breve introduzione presente nel libro, nella quale ho consegnato ciò che avevamo tratto da quel viaggio mentale. Ho finora evitato di aggiungere altro. Ma data l’eccezionalità dell’occasione farò un’eccezione e invito il mio lettore a entrare in un breve… romanzo d’appendice, nelle quinte dei mille fiumi.

Avrei voluto mostrare qui alcuni dei libri, atlanti, mappe, tabelle e grafici redatti in tante lingue e alfabeti che ci erano giunti per posta in quegli anni.

Ma non è più possibile per via del “baule dei fiumi” che si è perso – come può accadere a una zattera – abbandonato e persino dimenticato qualche anno dopo la pubblicazione del libro, in una stagione esistenziale degli autori che fu una specie di alluvione, una piena devastatrice che portò via tante cose preziose.

Certo per quanto riguarda i Fiumi, rimaneva il prodotto definitivo, il libro, persino corredato dalla sua bibliografia.

Poco tempo fa ho ritrovato però un pacco di lettere che credevo finite sulla zattera assieme ad atlanti e libri. Erano in una bustona intitolata a mano “Storia del libro dei 1.000 fiumi”, 203 lettere ben ordinate, dal ’70 al ’75. ... Ora vi dirò alcune mie riflessioni sorte mentre le sfogliavo di nuovo.

Sono tutte risposte alle mie lettere (di cui non ho tenuto la copia) e oggi deduco più o meno le mie richieste dalle risposte ottenute dai corrispondenti di tutto il mondo: dalla Cina al Brasile, dall’Islanda alla Rhodesia. Forse è interessante ricordare qui che

Hans Ulrich Obrist: There is a text that I wrote about the non-realised projects, because Alighiero himself spoke to me about it. The idea was to start with the work about the apple tree, and then talk about the Banderuola [Weather Vane] in Spoleto.

Laura Cheurbini: The Banderuola had been conceived for an event curated by Giacinto Di Pietrantonio, Territorio Italiano: the invited artists were requested to propose a project and to choose the site, in Italy, where they would like to execute it. Not all the projects came to fruition, but there is a book with all the documentation.

HUO: But this story started way earlier. It started when I first met Alighiero in 1985. I was seventeen year old, and I also met Mariangela, to whom I would like to dedicate this work.

LC: I know you were seventeen, because Alighiero told me about it. “You must meet this extraordinary young man” he would say. How did you meet him?

HUO: In Rome, at the studio near the Pantheon.

I asked to meet him, because Fischli & Weiss had talked about him. We spent the whole day together. After meeting at the studio he took me around Rome in his car, to meet first Mario Schifano and then Mariangela.

LC: He used to say that he moved to Rome because of Schifano… He would drive his car very fast…

HUO: That’s right, he was a fast driver… He immediately told me four things: ‘Do not become a boring curator.’

‘Do not put artists in boxes.’

‘One should always listen to what the artist intends to do.’

‘Hans, quasi-zero velocity’: it was time for me to start accelerating!

LC: He didn’t like labels – no artist loves them, actually – I remember that he used to say: “Arte Povera – if such a thing ever existed – lasted maximum two years…” So to listen, yes, but not to what the artists have done, rather what they would like to do…

HUO: From then on, in all my conversations I have always asked all artists: “What is your nonrealised project?” In 1997 I made a book with 107 non-realised projects, where I published the two projects of Alighiero’s I just mentioned. I also had

HUO: La storia inizia molto prima. Inizia da quando ho conosciuto Alighiero nel 1985. Avevo 17 anni e ho conosciuto anche Mariangela alla quale vorrei dedicare questo lavoro.

LC: So che avevi 17 anni, perché Alighiero me ne aveva parlato: “Devi conoscere questo giovane straordinario” diceva… Come lo avevi conosciuto?

HUO: A Roma, allo studio accanto al Pantheon.

Avevo chiesto di incontrarlo perché mi avevano parlato di lui Fischli & Weiss. Abbiamo passato la giornata insieme, dopo lo studio mi ha portato in giro per Roma in macchina a conoscere prima Mario Schifano e poi Mariangela.

LC: Diceva sempre di essere venuto a Roma per Schifano… Correva molto in macchina…

HUO: Sì, andava molto veloce… Mi ha detto subito 4 cose: “Non diventare un curatore noioso.”

“Non mettere gli artisti nelle scatole.”

“Si dovrebbe sempre ascoltare cosa gli artisti desiderano fare.”

“Hans, velocità quasi zero”; era il momento per me di cominciare ad accelerare!

LC: Non amava le etichette, come in fondo nessun artista, ricordo che diceva sempre: “L’Arte Povera, se è mai esistita, è durata al massimo due anni…”

Ascoltare quindi, non cosa hanno fatto gli artisti, ma cosa vorrebbero fare…

HUO: Da quel momento in tutte le mie interviste ho chiesto sempre a tutti gli artisti: “Qual è il tuo progetto non realizzato?”. Nel 1997 ho fatto un libro con 107 progetti non realizzati dove sono pubblicati i 2 progetti di Alighiero cui accennavo prima. Ho pensato a un Archivio di progetti non realizzati. Anche “Utopia Station”, curata con Molly Nesbitt e Rirkrit Tiravanija alla Biennale di

The major categories of ‘unbuiltness’ would appear to be (1) not carried out as planned; (2) not really intended by its instigator to be ‘done’ and (3) begun but never completed. The first would be considered to be a negative situation (although the intention was positive), the second to be a positive situation (although the intention would appear quite negative), and the third to be half-and-half.

Unlike unrealised models and projects submitted for architectural competitions, which are frequently published, such endeavours in the visual arts – that are planned but not carried out – ordinarily remain unnoticed or little known. Since 1990, I have been gathering information on thousands of unrealised artists’ projects – roads not taken – as a kind of a ‘reservoir of ideas’. There are the forgotten projects, the directly or indirectly censored projects, the partially realised projects, the misunderstood projects, the oppressed projects, the lost projects, the unrealisable projects – all between the non-real and the probable.

This led to the first chapter of the on-going project, a book called Unbuilt Roads, which was coedited with Guy Tortosa in collaboration with Kasper König’s Skulptur. Projekte Münster. Initially, the main focus was on public art, and specifically on those parameters set that augment the difficulties of making those public projects come to life. While working on the book, Tortosa and I frequently asked ourselves why such a book had never been done before. Hundreds of thousands of art books appear at exhibitions and other events every year, but as far as we know there has never been a publication on ‘unbuilt’ works of art spanning multiple generations and geographical regions.

(The only precursor work of which we are aware is Unbuilt America, edited by Alison Sky and Michelle Stone, which deals with unbuilt architecture, and is only peripherally concerned with artists’ projects.)

Thus Unbuilt Roads, the book, was the product of several years of international research, in the course of which we endeavoured to compile an inventory of a broad range of unrealised artists’ projects.

From the thousands of planned undertakings considered, we selected 107 unpublished projects and presented them to the public for the first

Dal 1990 raccolgo informazioni su migliaia di progetti d’artista non realizzati (strade non percorse) considerandoli una sorta di “riserva d’idee”.

Ci sono i progetti dimenticati, quelli direttamente o indirettamente censurati, quelli realizzati solo in parte, quelli fraintesi, oppressi, persi, e quelli irrealizzabili: tutti a metà strada fra l’irreale e il probabile.

La mia ricerca si è tradotta nel primo capitolo di un progetto tuttora in corso, il libro intitolato Unbuilt Roads, co-curato insieme a Guy Tortosa in collaborazione con Skulptur. Projekte Münster di Kasper König. All’inizio l’attenzione si è concentrata principalmente sull’arte pubblica, in special modo su tutta una serie di criteri che rendono più difficoltoso far nascere i progetti pubblici. Mentre lavoravamo al libro, Tortosa e io ci chiedevamo spesso perché non fosse ancora stato scritto un libro di questo tipo. Ogni anno, in occasione di mostre e altri eventi, escono centinaia di migliaia di libri d’arte ma, per quanto ne sappiamo, non c’è mai stata una pubblicazione sulle opere d’arte ‘non costruite’ che spazi su più generazioni e aree geografiche. (L’unico precursore di cui abbiamo contezza è Unbuilt America, a cura di Alison Sky e Michelle Stone, che affronta il tema dell’architettura non costruita, toccando solo marginalmente i progetti di artisti).

time in book form, in which their heterogeneous character – as letters, faxes, or emails in response to the questionnaire sent out by us – was preserved.

The complete result of the research was published in 1997 as an anthology of unrealised projects.

There are many different reasons why the planned projects presented in Unbuilt Roads have not been carried out. The following are some of the most representative variations: 1. Public commissions not fulfilled for political, technical, or economic reasons. Primarily, these include projects that were postponed, censored, or rejected for a variety of reasons as well as unrealised commissioned works or those that failed to win competitions.

2. ‘Desk-drawer projects’ developed by artists on their own without reference to a particular commission. Many of these planned undertakings were either forgotten or rejected by the artists themselves. In the case of the

Rosso Gilera, Rosso Guzzi [Gilera Red, Guzzi Red] and Boetti’s other works of this type are the ones I find most interesting. They had an indirect influence on my practice, on my series on colour, which I’d already begun in 1974 with Rouge Geranium par Duclo et Ripolin [Geranium Red by Duclo and Ripolin], even though I made most of them from the late 1980s onwards. What’s more, these works are in the form of monochrome diptychs, which is to say they’re doubles, almost identical, like twins…

Rosso Gilera, Rosso Guzzi e le altre opere di Boetti di quel tipo sono quelle che più mi interessano.

Indirettamente hanno influenzato le mie, la mia serie sul colore iniziata già nel 1974 Rouge Geranium par Duclo et Ripolin, anche se la maggior parte di esse l’ho realizzate dalla fine degli anni ottanta.

Andrea Bellini: Gianni, do you remember when you met Alighiero Boetti for the first time?

Gianni Piacentino: I met Alighiero in 1965 or 1966 in the circle that revolved around the Galleria Sperone. We immediately got on well – we had the same self-deprecating sense of humour, the same (also practical) interest in girls and, above all, neither of us came from the Academy, which I’ve always seen as an inauspicious place to come from!

AB: You once told me about some summers you spent together…

GP: Yes, I remember discovering Vernazza as a holiday place and we went to Nice in the summer of 1966, to buy the latest Cacharel floral shirts and pink and purple velvet jeans. Alighiero later bought a house inland from Vernazza and we saw a lot of each other, even though it was half an hour’s walk up a steep path to get there. I remember travelling to Geneva together to see a gallery that was going

Nell’entroterra di Vernazza lui poi comprò una casa che frequentavamo molto nonostante per raggiungerla fosse necessaria una camminata su sentieri in ripida

I am attracted to maps in general and particular maps in particular. And I am especially attracted to maps that do not necessarily explain geography, but maps that symbolically and figuratively might explain a concept of the world.

The first maps were about ideas, not geography.

For a Christian in the tenth century the most revered maps made Jerusalem the centre of the world and placed Heaven and Hell to the extreme North and the extreme South. Now such maps have become debased, they have become documentary, and relinquished much of their poetic origins. Contemporary maps are admired primarily because of their accuracy. They have become tools for a sense of direction, not designs for encapsulating an ideology, or a concept, or a poetic manifestation, or an ideal. Or an idyll.

However all maps operate in a very quiet way. I have never met or seen or heard of a map that shouted. They quietly tell you where you have been, where you are and where you will be, or could be, or might have been, or could be still.

Many tenses in one. To match their quietness, they may often have a secretiveness. I enjoy the idea of maps found in secret places. Most maps have a private language, although that privacy can be shared. Who would know but the informed that a circle surmounted by a cross on a map is not the Venus sign for a female but a round towered church? Maps have secret symbolic languages, but often large communities share the secret.

I would like to share the secret maps that I have found. I have found maps on the hide of a cow that stood in a meadow at the village of Diss in Suffolk, England, and also analogous maps found in a cow’s hide in a painting by Paulus Potter in a museum at Haarlem, Holland, as well as maps in a photograph of a cloud of steam that looked like a cow issuing from a grating on a road in Harlem, New York. And I have discovered maps in a bird’s plumage, and maps in letters sent five times through the post between London and Hong Kong picking up scratches and blotches and the blemishes of handling along the way. And I have found my own personal maps in the sunlight catching a map of Holland’s seven provinces on a wall in a Vermeer painting, and also in the sunlight catching the scratches and pits and surfaces on a wall in a Vermeer painting. I enjoy large maps.

Io sono attratto dalle mappe in generale e in particolare da mappe particolari, e sono specialmente attratto da quelle mappe che non necessariamente spiegano geografie, ma da mappe che simbolicamente e figurativamente possono spiegare un concetto del mondo. La prima mappa riguardava idee e non geografia.

Per un cristiano del decimo secolo la mappa più venerata poneva Gerusalemme al centro del mondo e il Paradiso e l’Inferno all’estremo nord e all’estremo sud. Tali mappe sono state sottovalutate, sono divenute documentarie e abbandonate alle loro origini poetiche. Le mappe contemporanee sono ammirate principalmente per la loro accuratezza; sono diventate strumenti per rintracciare il senso della direzione, non disegnate per incapsulare un’ideologia, o un concetto o una manifestazione poetica o un ideale. O un idillio. Tuttavia ogni mappa opera in modo tranquillo. Non mi è mai capitato di incontrare o vedere o sentire di una mappa che gridasse. Esse discretamente ti indicano dove sei stato, dove ti trovi e dove te ne andrai, o potresti andartene, o potresti essere andato, o il luogo in cui potresti ancora essere. Molti tempi in uno. Per accompagnarsi alla loro calma esse devono avere spesso una certa segretezza.

Mi piace l’idea di mappe trovate in posti segreti.

Molte mappe possiedono un linguaggio privato sebbene quella privacy possa essere condivisa.

Chi potrebbe sapere, se non coloro che già sono informati, che un cerchio sormontato da una croce non è il simbolo di Venere per indicare il femminile ma piuttosto una chiesa con una torre rotonda?

Le mappe hanno linguaggi simbolici segreti ma spesso vaste comunità condividono quel segreto.

Mi piacerebbe condividere il segreto delle mappe che mi è capitato di scoprire. Ho trovato mappe sulle pelli di bovini che stavano in un prato presso Diss nel Suffolk in Inghilterra, e mappe analoghe le ho ritrovate sulla pelle di una vacca in un dipinto di Paulus Potter in un museo ad Harlem in Olanda; inoltre altre mappe in una fotografia di una nuvola di vapore che sembrava una vacca uscita da una grata di una strada di Harlem a New York. Ho scoperto mappe nel piumaggio degli uccelli, e mappe in lettere spedite cinque volte attraverso la posta tra Londra e Hong Kong recuperando graffi, macchie e piccoli segni formatisi lungo il

Giovanni Battista Boetti, an eighteenth-century ancestor of Alighiero Boetti, played an extremely important role in Alighiero’s childhood mythology.1 A traveller and Dominican missionary in Mesopotamia, he apparently converted to Sufism and fought against Russian Imperial expansion in the Caucasus under the name of the prophet Mansour.2 This Dominican friar (and student of Medicine) scoured the whole of the Orient: it seems that he had attempted to join up with the Orientalist and theologian Johann David Michaelis, who for years had been preparing a scientific expedition to Arabia on the ship Greenland under the patronage of the King of Denmark. He finally managed to set off for the Middle East with the Congregazione di Propaganda Fide. He travelled between Mosul, Constantinople, Erzurum, Kurdistan, Armenia and Circassia. He assumed different identities, with pseudonyms like Pafflis, and Abdalla Bacase. He was finally addressed with titles like ‘Imam’, ‘Sheikh’ and ‘Mansour’, the victorious. He (apparently) converted to Islam, declared war on Catherine the Great of Russia, and led the Chechen resistance in Dagestan for five years against the Russian governor, Prince Potemkin.

Alighiero Boetti – or ‘Alighiero e Boetti’, as he started signing his work in 1971 – was born on 16 December, 1940 in Turin, ltaly. His father, Corrado Boetti, was a lawyer and his mother, Adelina Marchisio, was a violinist. His interest in art was selftaught. He had enrolled in the Faculty of Economy and Trade at the University of Turin, but soon abandoned his studies. In 1962 he met Annemarie Sauzeau in Provence and married her in 1964.

He debuted in January 1967 with a personal exhibition at the Galleria Stein as a representative of the Arte Povera movement. He was then invited to all group exhibitions that marked the rise of the Arte Povera and Conceptual art movements, such as When attitudes become form (1969) curated in Bern by Harald Szeemann.

In 1969, his first son Matteo was born in Turin.

After his daughter Agata was born in 1972, he moved to Rome, a more fitting location considering his predilection for Southern lands.

The year before he had discovered Afghanistan where he would stop for long periods twice a year.

As soon as 1971, during his second stay, he and Annemarie Sauzeau opened the ‘One Hotel’ in Kabul. Here, assigning Afghan women the embroidery work, he started the cycle of his coloured Mappe [Maps] of the world. They were compositions designed in his studio in ltaly and based on the colours and forms of flags, some of which will change over time. The embroidered Mappe as a whole form a work in progress that evolved from 1971 to 1994 according to geopolitical changes.

In Kabul, he also started the embroidered ‘squared phrases.’

In 1974 he brought Francesco Clemente with him to Afghanistan, then his son Matteo in 1977. The production of his embroideries was partly interrupted by the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan from December 1979 on. But it was regularly resumed in Peshawar in 1986 through collaboration with Afghan refugees in Pakistan.

Boetti was a great traveler and made long trips to Ethiopia, Guatemala and Japan, which he used as chances to set up and send some of his ‘postal works’ with local stamps. Based on permutation or other stamp combinations, but also depending on the uncertain adventure of the world’s postal

Si avvicina all’arte da autodidatta. Iscritto alla Facoltà di Economia e Commercio dell’Università di Torino abbandona presto gli studi. Nel 1962 in Provenza conosce Annemarie Sauzeau che sposa nel 1964.

L’esordio avviene nel gennaio del 1967 con un’esposizione personale presso la Galleria Stein, nella quale egli figura in quanto rappresentante dell’Arte Povera. Verrà poi invitato a tutte le collettive che segnano la nascita dell’Arte Povera e dell’Arte Concettuale come “When attitudes become form” (1969), curata a Berna da Harald Szeemann.

Nel 1969 a Torino nasce il primogenito Matteo. Dopo la nascita della figlia Agata nel 1972, si trasferisce a Roma, contesto più adatto alla sua predilezione per il Sud del mondo.

Già dall’anno precedente ha scoperto l’Afghanistan dove effettuerà lunghe permanenze due volte l’anno.

Durante il secondo soggiorno del 1971 con Annemarie Sauzeau apre a Kabul l’albergo “One Hotel”. Qui, affidando a donne afghane l’esecuzione del ricamo, avvia il ciclo delle Mappe, planisferi colorati che, partendo da composizioni da lui disegnate in Italia, si basano su colore e forma delle bandiere che possono mutare nel tempo. Perciò l’insieme delle Mappe ricamate formano un’opera “in progress” che evolve dal 1971 al 1994 a secondo delle modificazioni geopolitiche.

Parallelamente, sempre a Kabul avvia la lavorazione ricamata delle “frasi messe al quadrato”.

Nel 1974 porta con sè in Afghanistan Francesco Clemente e nel 1977 il figlio Matteo. La produzione dei ricami, resa precaria dall’occupazione sovietica in Afghanistan a partire dal dicembre 1979, riprenderà in modo stabile a Peshawar nel 1986 grazie alla collaborazione dei rifugiati afghani in Pakistan.

Grande viaggiatore, Boetti soggiornerà in Etiopia, Guatemala e Giappone, luoghi che userà come occasioni per elaborare e spedire alcuni dei suoi “lavori postali” con francobolli locali. Giocati sulla permutazione combinatoria dei francobolli, ma anche sull’aleatoria avventura legata ai servizi

services, these ‘postal works’ focus on the fascinating and inescapable flow of time – the unifying theme in Boetti’s plurality of genres and iconography. ln 1982, he separated from Annemarie Sauzeau.

He left his studio in Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, to settle later in his studio “next to the Pantheon...”.

In 1990 he married Caterina Raganelli and in 1992 his third child Giordano was born.

He died at home on Via del Teatro Pace in Rome on 24 April, 1994.

postali del mondo, i “lavori postali” sono incentrati sullo scorrere affascinante quanto ineluttabile del tempo, tema unificante nella pluralità tipologica e iconografica di Boetti.

Nel corso del 1982 l’artista si separa da Annemarie Sauzeau, poi lascia il suo studio di Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere per stabilirsi, solo più tardi, in quello “accanto al Pantheon...”. Nel 1990 sposa Caterina Raganelli e nel 1992 nasce il terzo figlio Giordano.

Muore nella sua casa di Via del Teatro Pace a Roma il 24 aprile 1994.
