Scrive Ruffi: “Vorrei essere un architetto della materia”. È questo il suo programma e la sua aspirazione. Partiamo da ciò. Essere architetto della materia vuol dire innanzitutto far riferimento ad un’architettura muraria, opaca, tendenzialmente di intonaco, dove le bucature siano ridotte al minimo e poste in forma anonima su impaginati chiari e rigorosi in cui sono eliminati tutti gli elementi aggettivanti come le soglie, i marcapiani, gli stipiti. Vuol dire concepire un’architettura compatta, muta, mediterranea, in cui l’aspetto esterno come uno scrigno, cela e protegge gelosamente la vita che si svolge all’interno. Un’architettura della materia inoltre è un’architettura che ambisce alla massima integrazione con il paesaggio attraverso un’essenzialità arcaica il cui modello è quello archetipico dell’edilizia rurale: un modello talmente germinale da risultare senza tempo, per cui adattabile (almeno teoricamente) a qualunque spazio. Architettura della materia vuol dire inoltre mettere da parte la concezione analitica dell’architettura, del progetto composto per passaggi successivi che organizzano materiali 6

To design material architecture means above all to focus on architecture made of walls, that is opaque and tends to be covered by plasterwork, where openings are reduced to a minimum and placed inconspicuously on clear and rigorous layouts where all projecting elements such as thresholds, string courses and doorposts have been eliminated. It means to conceive a compact, mute, Mediterranean architecture where the outer appearance, like a casket, jealously conceals and protects the life that takes place within. Moreover, a material architecture is an architecture that aims to blend with the landscape as much as possible through an archaic essentiality, modelled on the archetypal one of rural constructions: a model that is germinal to the point of being timeless and thus adaptable (at least in theory) to any space. Material architecture also means to lay aside the analytical conception of architecture, of planning consisting of a succession of phases that organizes

Ai piedi di Serravalle Pistoiese, un piccolo borgo medievale a ovest di Pistoia, il volume di un vecchio edificio degli anni ‘50 viene radicalmente ristrutturato per essere di nuovo consacrato alla sua originaria vocazione: il tennis. Il progetto sorge al margine nord-ovest di un terreno di 3.500 mq nelle immediate vicinanze di un piccolo lago e si distingue dal contesto naturale circostante alquanto eterogeneo per la purezza e la rigorosa geometria delle sue forme. La movimentata topografia locale è stata utilizzata per sviluppare il progetto di un’architettura longitudinale, che si sfrangia e si dilata alle estremità per essere, verso nord, parzialmente inghiottita dalla pendenza del terreno. A ovest è situata l’area spogliatoi, docce, sauna e locale soci, mentre nell’ala orientale, completamente fuori terra, il barcaffetteria, vero nucleo del racconto. I severi corpi di fabbrica principali sono articolati sui lati da alcuni elementi più piccoli e leggermente inclinati contenenti locali tecnici: tutto questo genera un fronte continuo e irregolare, come un nastro perimetrale di facciata 14

At the feet of Serravalle Pistoiese, a small Medieval village east of Pistoia, the volume of an old building from the Fifties has undergone radical renovations to return to its old vocation: tennis. The project stands at the north-western border of a plot of 3,500 sq.m near a small lake, and distinguishes itself from the quite heterogeneous natural landscape surrounding it by the purity and rigorous geometry of its forms. The architect has made the most of the uneven terrain to develop the project of a longitudinal architecture that is frayed and dilated at the extremities and partially swallowed up by the sloping land to the north. The western side houses locker rooms, showers, sauna and clubroom while the eastern wing, completely above ground, contains the bar-café, the true nucleus of the aggregate. The severe main buildings are articulated on the sides by a number of smaller, slightly inclined elements containing system rooms: all this gives rise to a continuous and irregular front, as if the façade were to form a band around the perimeter and at the same time the parapet of the

This architecture is a search for continuity: an essential, primitive structure obtained by subtraction, aimed at reducing the elements to a minimum and linked more to reality than to theory, in the conviction that architecture is architectures.

Un lavoro che sottintende lâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;idea di costruire un luogo, dare forma ai confini, a un concetto spaziale che nasce dalla combinazione fra sperimentazione corporea intorno ai materiali e dialogo con il paesaggio, con il segno forte e silenzioso della torre sul crinale della collina. This work is implicit in the idea of building a place, of giving form to its borders, to a spatial concept inspired by a combination between corporeal experimentation of the materials and a dialogue with the landscape, with the strong and silent sign of the tower on the crest of the hill.

A succession of places where glimpses of the landscape are framed by the architecture allows us to explore the space while in movement, appreciating its archaic purity and studied simplicity.

Lapo Ruffi nasce a Firenze il 18 luglio 1971. Studia presso la Facoltà di Architettura di Firenze (UNIFI) dove si laurea nel 1998 (Museo d’arte contemporanea nell’ex area Meccanotessile di Rifredi a Firenze). Dal 2002 apre a Pistoia il proprio studio Lapo Ruffi Architetto – LRA, deciso a concentrare i suoi sforzi nella ricerca e nella sperimentazione in architettura. Opera nel campo della progettazione architettonica con lavori di diversa natura e scala: da progetti urbani fino a case unifamiliari, dal design d’interni e allestimenti di esposizioni fino ad oggetti d’arredo, partecipando a concorsi nazionali ed internazionali. Tra i progetti premiati negli ultimi anni: i concorsi internazionali Europan 9, The sustainable city and new public spaces, a Pistoia (Italia, 2007, 1° premio) e Europan 10, Inventing urbanity: regeneration, revitalization, colonization, a Montreux (Svizzera, 2009, 1° premio). Fra le sue principali opere realizzate: l’abitazione/studio per un artista Casa S (2001-03) e l’edificio plurifamiliare Casa D (200305) a Pistoia, lo spazio direzionale Ufficio K a Montecatini Terme (200407), l’ambiente espositivo/direzionale Spazio I a Pistoia (2007-09) e il complesso sportivo Edificio TCR a Serravalle Pistoiese (2007-09). Le sue opere sono state pubblicate 58

su numerose riviste e siti web nazionali ed internazionali. Nel 2007 il suo lavoro è inserito nel libro 1000x European Architecture, Verlagshaus Braun, Berlino ed esposto alla mostra FlorenceEXIT | Segnali e fermenti di una nuova generazione di architetti e al Festival della Creatività di Firenze. Nel 2008 è invitato ad esporre a RIZOMA - Biennale dei giovani architetti italiani ed è inserito nell’antologia Young Blood 2007 Annual dei talenti italiani premiati nel mondo. Nel 2010 il progetto Synapsiedlung è pubblicato nel numero dedicato all’Housing della rivista portoghese AI – Arquitectura Ibérica e quest’anno l’edificio TCR è stato inserito nel libro 100 World New Architecture, Jiangsu People’s Publishing House, Nanjing, China. L’attività progettuale dello studio si muove lungo una costante ricerca sui significati dell’abitare, dei luoghi e della materia, lavorando dalle grandi architetture della città fino a piccole case solitarie. Attualmente si occupa di un complesso residenziale nell’ex area industriale Officine Cantini a Pistoia, della realizzazione di un padiglione/studio per l’artista Jannis Kounellis nella provincia di Perugia, e del progetto per un nuovo quartiere abitativo con funzioni pubbliche nell’area Aux Grands-Prés a Montreux.

Lapo Ruffi was born in Florence on 18 July 1971. He graduated from the architecture faculty of Florence (UNIFI) in 1998 (Museum of contemporary art in the former area Meccanotessile of Rifredi in Florence). He opened his own firm Lapo Ruffi Architetto – LRA in 2002 in Pistoia, determined to focus his efforts on architectural research and experimentation. He works in the field of architectural planning with works of various kinds and on different scales: from town plans to one-family houses, from interior decoration and exhibition designs to furniture items, participating in national and international competitions. Works by him which have won prizes in recent years comprise: the international competitions Europan 9, The sustainable city and new public spaces, in Pistoia (Italy, 2007, 1st prize) and Europan 10, Inventing urbanity: regeneration, revitalization, colonization, in Montreux (Switzerland, 2009, 1st prize). His most important built projects comprise: Casa S home/ atelier for an artist (2001-03), the Casa D small condominium (2003-05) in Pistoia, the Ufficio K office complex in Montecatini Terme (2004-07), the Spazio I exhibition/office aggregate in Pistoia (2007-09) and the Edificio TCR sports facility in Serravalle Pistoiese (2007-09). His works have been published in numerous national

and international magazines and websites. In 2007 his works were included in the book 1000x European Architecture, Verlagshaus Braun, Berlin and presented at the exhibition FlorenceEXIT | Signals and ferments of a new generation of architects and at the Festival of Creativity of Florence. In 2008 he was invited to exhibit in RIZOMA - Biennial of young Italian architects and included in the anthology Young Blood 2007 - Annual of Italian talents who have won prizes in the world. In 2010 the Synapsiedlung project was published in the issue dedicated to Housing of the Portuguese magazine AI – Arquitectura Ibérica and this year the TCR building was included in the book 100 World New Architecture, Jiangsu People’s Publishing House, Nanjing, China. The activities of the firm centre on a continuous research on the meanings of living, places and materials, and ranges from large urban architectures to small solitary houses. He is currently working on a residential complex in the Officine Cantini former industrial area of Pistoia, on the construction of a pavilion/atelier for the artist Jannis Kounellis in the province of Perugia, and the design of a new residential district with public facilities in the Aux Grands-Prés area in Montreux.
