Two years after opening our London gallery, Tornabuoni Art is proud to inaugurate this autumn’s exhibition programme with a presentation of the work of Giorgio de Chirico, the founding father of Metaphysical Painting. This ambitious and complex exhibition aims to shine a light on lesser known aspects of the artist’s practice.

Reading de Chirico is not intended to function merely as an exhibition, however, but as an exciting opportunity to study and understand the body of work of the Pictor Optimus through a different lens.

Using paintings, photographs and archival texts, this exhibition will explore the relationship between de Chirico’s writing and painting, two essential and complementary aspects of his artistic process – on one side the realm of theory and intention, and the other that of action and creation. One of the most recognised and celebrated artists in the history of art, de Chirico was a leading figure in the artistic and cultural landscape of 20th-century Europe.

Born in Greece (Volos) of Italian parents, he nurtured a love for German and French culture (from Arthur Schopenhauer and Friedrich Nietzsche to Guillaume Apollinaire, along with Italian culture, and was notably influenced by the work of the Symbolist artist Arnold Böcklin, whose command of ancient artistic techniques de Chirico admired. These experiences were catalysts and guides for de Chirico’s theoretic and artistic research but, as is often the case, an artist’s oeuvre is not always wholly known, and often there are grey areas and uncharted territories that are ripe for study and capable of yielding fascinating surprises.

Contrary to how he has sometimes been portrayed, de Chirico was neither “old fashioned“ nor a conservative intellectual, but rather a keen observer and interpreter of

A due anni dall’apertura della sede londinese della Tornabuoni Art siamo orgogliosi di inaugurare la stagione autunnale con un nuovo progetto espositivo complesso e ambizioso attraverso il quale raccontare al grande pubblico un profilo inedito del padre della Pittura metafisica: Giorgio de Chirico.

“Reading de Chirico“ – questo il titolo dell’esposizione che presentiamo – non vuole esser soltanto una mostra ma un momento di studio e al contempo di scoperta che mette in evidenza un percorso di lettura inusuale rispetto alla produzione del Pictor Optimus.

Un’indagine costruita attraverso dipinti, immagini fotografiche e testi, che intende esplorare e mettere a confronto due aspetti molto importanti nonché indispensabili e complementari dell’attività creativa dell’artista, ossia la sfera delle intenzioni riguardante l’ambito teorico e quella delle azioni suggellata dall’atto del fare. Di sicuro tra gli artisti più riconosciuti e celebrati, de Chirico rappresenta una delle figure centrali all’interno del dibattito artistico-culturale del Novecento.

Nato in Grecia da genitori Italiani (Volos), con amori profondi per la cultura tedesca (Schopenhauer e Nietzsche), francese (Apollinaire) oltre che naturalmente italiana, fu notevolmente influenzato dal Simbolismo di Böcklin e dalla sua padronanza delle antiche tecniche. Saranno proprio tali esperienze a guidare de Chirico nella sua ricerca di artista e teorico ma, come spesso accade, possono nascondersi delle zone d’ombra, episodi non sempre scandagliati e analizzati in profondità che celano interessanti sorprese.

the most pressing European cultural debates of his time, always aware of the latest avant-garde tendencies and able to breathe life into his own passionate resistance to “contemporaneity.“ Giorgio de Chirico’s pictorial, critical and literary practice, spanned much of the 20th century and inspired the Surrealist movement – Magritte in particular – as well as the great masters of the Italian Novecento such as Morandi, Sironi, Carrà reaching all the way to Andy Warhol, whom he met in New York in 1972. In de Chirico’s great œuvre, the early metaphysical and surrealist works are intersected and enriched with baroque and mythological paintings, as well as the artist’s many opulent self-portraits.

While our desire to offer a comprehensive and in-depth reading of the relationship between de Chirico’s artistic and literary production is reflected in the composition of the show itself and the contrasts it addresses, a more complete understanding of his work emerges thanks to a special focus on some of the central concepts of the artist’s practice, such as “revelation,“ “the immutable“ and “the profound,“ which he derived from his reading of Nietzsche.

The exhibition is also a way for Tornabuoni to express its longstanding admiration and support for Giorgio de Chirico’s work. This is part and parcel of the gallery’s mission to highlight the artists and movements that left their indelible mark on the cultural legacy and art of the 20th century.

Regardless of the political and economic uncertainty that is casting a shadow over the United Kingdom, London undoubtedly remains one of the most important centres of the art world – both academically and in terms of the market. It seemed logical to us to inaugurate such a groundbreaking show in this city, before the exhibition travels to our gallery in Paris next year.

The exhibition Reading de Chirico draws its strength from our own collection, while important contributions have come from private collectors and prestigious institutions such as London’s Estorick Collection.

The project has been expertly curated by Katherine Robinson, member of the scientific committee of the Fondazione Giorgio e Isa de Chirico, to whom we are particularly indebted. We would also like to express our gratitude to Gavin Parkinson, from the Courtauld Institute of Art, whose essay provides a new reading of de Chirico’s stylistic and painterly evolution.

Tornabuoni is proud of this exhibition, which for the first time brings the artist’s artistic and literary work together in conversation, and we are confident in its ability to contribute to the renewed success of the master and father of Metaphysical Painting.

L’arte pittorica, critica e letteraria di Giorgio de Chirico ha percorso gran parte del XX secolo ispirando il movimento Surrealista, in particolar modo Magritte o i grandi maestri dell’arte del Novecento italiano come Morandi, Sironi, Carrà, fino ad Andy Warhol, conosciuto a New York nel 1972.

Nel suo ampio corpus di opere i dipinti giovanili, quelli metafisici e surreali si intersecano e si arricchiscono negli anni con quelli barocchi e mitologici, fino ai ritratti e ai numerosi autoritratti, emblema di eleganza e opulenza.

Le ragioni principali che ci hanno spinto ad intraprendere questa scelta espositiva intitolandola “Reading de Chirico“ sono molteplici e tutte egualmente meritevoli. Se il desiderio di dare una lettura più approfondita ed esaustiva del rapporto tra produzione artistica e produzione letteraria viene amplificato dalla mostra attraverso il confronto, concetti cardine, come “rivelazione“, “immutabile“ e “profondo“, di derivazione nietzschiana, completano il quadro, fornendo allo spettatore una serie di informazioni che ne agevolano la comprensione d’insieme.

Con questo progetto espositivo Tornabuoni non solo intende testimoniare fiducia e ammirazione verso l’opera di Giorgio de Chirico – da sempre supportata – ma dimostra attenzione e rispetto per quegli artisti e movimenti che inevitabilmente hanno segnato la grande arte del XX secolo, creando una serie di strascichi dai quali nessuno può sottrarsi e ai quali la storia dell’arte intera è debitrice.

Nonostante le incertezze politico-economiche vissute dalla Gran Bretagna in questo ultimo anno, Londra resta senz’ombra di dubbio uno dei maggiori poli dell’arte e del mercato internazionale. Ci è sembrato quindi doveroso inaugurare nella capitale britannica una mostra di così originale lettura, tant’è che il prossimo anno verrà presentata nella nostra galleria di Parigi.

La mostra “Reading de Chirico“ nasce dalle opere della nostra collezione ed è realizzata grazie alla disponibilità di collezionisti e la collaborazione di prestigiosi musei e fondazioni come la Estorick Collection di Londra. Tutto il progetto è stato magistralmente curato da Katherine Robinson del comitato scientifico della Fondazione Giorgio e Isa de Chirico, a cui va un ringraziamento particolare.

Grazie al contributo di Gavin Parkinson del The Courtauld Institute of Art è stata resa possibile una nuova lettura critica sull’evoluzione stilistica e pittorica di Giorgio de Chirico.

Fieri di questo inedito progetto espositivo che mette a confronto per la prima volta la produzione letteraria e pittorica di Giorgio de Chirico, restiamo fiduciosi per quanto fatto e quanto programmato rispetto al rinnovato successo del maestro padre della Pittura metafisica.

The Painter and his Genius in the Writer – Katherine Robinson

The line of dots with which Giorgio de Chirico’s novel Hebdomeros of 19291 begins, delineates, as Jole de Sanna has already noted, the form of the entire novel: “empty space and a series of dots. The story does not begin – it continues – removed from historical time: ‘…And then began the tour of that strange building…’.“2 In 1971, in an interview, de Chirico himself affirmed: “Hebdomeros is a sort of fantastical recitation which has no logic but has the advantage that it can be opened at any point and what one reads is always interesting.“3 With the publication of this extraordinary story of “real and metaphysical adventures“ at the end of 1929, de Chirico notably increased his literary work know to the public at the time. His collaboration with art periodicals such as Valori Plastici and Ars Nova, had begun ten years earlier towards the end of World War One in Ferrara with a diversified selection of genres: the exhibition review of Mostra d’arte indipendente [Exhibition of Independent Artists] at the Roman gallery L’Epoca (June 1918), the compelling prose of Zeusi l’esploratore [Zeuxis the Explorer] and the touching eulogy for the death of Guillaume Apollinaire (both November 1918). He wrote his first theoretical essays including: Arte metafisica e scienze occulte [Metaphysical Art and Occult Sciences (January 1919)] and Sull’arte metafisica [On Metaphysical Art (April-May 1919)],4 whilst testifying to his creative, theoretic and empirical authorship of Metaphysical Painting with the essay Noi Metafisici [We Metaphysicians (February 1919)] and the unsigned autobiography written in third person for La Vraie Italie (March 1919).

Art – conceived by de Chirico in Florence in 1910 with the painting L’énigme d’un après-midi d’automne [The Enigma of an Autumn Afternoon], the archetypical work of the Italian Piazza theme – from being attributed to someone else. Carlo Carrà, for one, was already moving in this direction.

Hebdomeros, which in its original French version carries the subtitle: Le peintre et son génie chez l’écrivain [The painter and his genius in the writer], is also an autobiographical work. Written in a rhythmic flow of consciousness that “paints“ images with words: of life, nature and especially of thought, this literary masterpiece was praised at the time by the very surrealists who had declared the artist dead in 1926 due to the stylistic change that had taken place in his work and the interest he had shown for classical painting and research into painting technique. As narrator, de Chirico dons the role of Hebdomeros, a master around whom friends and students unite: “Hebdomeros sat on a tree trunk lying on the ground and his friends did the same; but as they loved to hear him talk they begged him to tell them one of those stories, so perfectly logical in appearance and so 24

Anche Hebdomeros, che nella sua versione originale francese porta il sottotitolo: Le peintre et son génie chez l’écrivain [Il genio del pittore nello scrittore], è un’opera autobiografica. Scritto in uno stile innovativo con un flusso di coscienza che “dipinge“ immagini con parole, della vita, della natura e soprattutto del pensiero, questo capolavoro letterario sarà acclamato dagli stessi surrealisti che nel 1926 avevano dichiarato l’artista morto a causa del cambiamento stilistico avvenuto nella sua opera dal 1919 e l’interesse dimostrato per la pittura classica e per la ricerca della tecnica pittorica. Come narratore, de Chirico veste i panni di Ebdòmero, maestro attorno al quale si radunano allievi e amici: “Ebdòmero si sedette sopra un tronco che giaceva per terra e i suoi amici lo imitarono.

Ma poiché essi erano sempre curiosi di udirlo parlare, lo pregarono vivamente di raccontar loro una di quelle storie perfettamente logiche in apparenza e altamente

greatly metaphysical at heart, of whose secret he held the monopoly.“ A vivacious portrayal suspended between dream and reality, Hebdomeros presents itself as a text in motion, a constellation of images and visual thoughts translated into words. The impetus of the narration, the richness of imagery and the novel’s pressing rhythm generates an image of the Infinite through an excess of stimulus.

In an extraordinary weaving of inventions and recurring innovations, the timeless structure of the writing brings to mind the idea of the Nietzsche’s “Eternal Return.“ Time in the novel seems, in fact, to follow: “a state proper to the human spirit which, guided by mathematical laws, is subject to the ebb and flow of tides, departures, returns and renewals, in the same way all elements manifest themselves on our planet.“ It is thus that de Chirico had described the restless and complicated condition of New Art in the abovementioned essay On Metaphysical Art ten years earlier.

The novel is steeped in references to the themes, subjects, spaces and atmospheres of de Chirico’s corpus of painting, dating twenty years at that time, with references that come to life in a fantastical narrative shored up with elements of wisdom and philosophical references. In addition to the piazza, deserted or inhabited by a lonely statue, one finds motifs evoking the subject of interiors and the mystery of the room that came into being in Ferrara in the years 1915-1918, an enigmatic theme represented in the present exhibition with the painting La Révolte du sage [The Revolt of the Sage (1916)] from the Estorick Collection.5 It is in these two initial, fundamental Metaphysical Art themes – The Italian Piazza and the Metaphysical Interior – that the poetics of line came into being: “lines drawn with a brilliance even the memory of which he had thought long lost, soft waves, persistent and unvarying, rose and rose incessantly toward the ceiling of his room,“ as one reads in a passage of Hebdomeros evoking the Metaphysical Interior theme. For de Chirico, line is a mystical element on which he wrote extensively. Prominently manifest in the accelerated perspectives of his metaphysical architecture, line flows in his successive romantic and classical work tracing form freely, a development highlighted in novel in narrative form: “the line of the low hills at the horizon,“ “the outline of the sands, which even now the desert winds whirled into inverted cones,“ while reading that: “With shrill cries the swallows cut through the air in long black tracings“ and “fireflies striped darkness with phosphorescent streaks.“ Also present here and there in Hebdomeros are those

L’impresa letteraria prende la forma di un intreccio di straordinarie invenzioni e ricorrenti innovazioni che, viste nell’impostazione atemporale della scrittura, richiamano l’idea dell’“Eterno ritorno“ nietzschiano.

Il tempo del racconto sembra, infatti, seguire lo “stato fatale dello umano spirito che, retto da leggi matematicamente fisse, ha flussi e riflussi, partenze e ritorni e rinascite, come tutti gli elementi che si manifestano sul nostro pianeta“. Così de Chirico aveva descritto dieci anni prima quello stato inquieto e complicato dell’Arte nuova nel sopracitato saggio Sull’arte metafisica.

Il romanzo è pregno di riferimenti dei temi, soggetti, spazi e atmosfere dell’oramai ventennale opera pittorica dell’artista rievocati all’interno di un racconto fantasioso scandito da elementi di saggezza e riflessioni filosofiche. Oltre alla piazza deserta o abitata da statue solitarie, si trovano motivi che si riferiscono alla visione d’interno che nasce a Ferrara negli anni 1915-1918 con il mistero della stanza e della camera, tema enigmatico rappresentato nella presente mostra con l’opera La Révolte du sage [La rivolta del saggio (1916)] della Estorick Collection5. È da questi due temi iniziali e fondamentali dell’Arte metafisica – la Piazza d’Italia e l’Interno metafisico – che scaturisce la poesia della linea: “linee tirate con una maestria di cui credeva persino il ricordo perduto già da lungo tempo, onde tenerissime, ostinate e isocrone, salivano e salivano senza fine verso il soffitto della sua camera“, come si legge in un passo di Ebdòmero che evoca proprio il tema dell’Interno metafisico. La linea per de Chirico è un elemento mistico sul quale ha scritto molto.

Evidenziata nelle prospettive accelerate delle sue architetture metafisiche, nella sua successiva opera romantica e classica scorre tracciando forme più libere, uno sviluppo che il romanzo evidenzia in forma narrata: “la linea delle colline basse, all’orizzonte“, la “linea delle sabbie che ora i venti del deserto sollevavano in coni“, mentre si legge che: “Le rondini, in lunghi tratti neri, fendevano l’aria cacciando gridi stridenti“ e “migliaia di lucciole rigano l’ombra con tratti fosforescenti“.

subjects that came into being during the second Parisian period from the mid-1920s on: Gladiators and Archaeologists, Horses by the Seashore, and the temples, columns and ruins of the classical world, together with the cupboards and armchairs of the Furniture in the Valley theme, which, as one reads elsewhere, when situated in open nature act as “shelter from all persecution of gods and men.“6 Further to the subjects and the evocative settings originating in the paintings, it is indeed worth taking into account the correspondence between the rich intensity of the prose and the free spontaneity of de Chirico’s painting style at the time of the novel’s writing. The luminous naturalism of his late 1920s’ paintings, with soft feathery Renoirian style brushwork, can be noted in the still lifes7 of 1930 and 1934, and the beautiful Nude of 1930 on show in the exhibition.

As seen in the correlation between his painted work, the words and evocative images of Hebdomeros, it is possible, reading de Chirico to glean unexpected aspects and dimensions of the evolution of his many subjects and painting styles.

Placing emphasis on de Chirico’s written work in an exhibition at London’s Tornabuoni Gallery today, means providing international scholars with a panorama of the artist’s intellectual work in concrete form. De Chirico’s theorisation of Metaphysical Art, meditations on the Enigma and the Inexplicable, which constitute fundamental aspects of his imagery, are thus presented in words – his words –. What better ambassador than the artist’s own words, fruit of his sensitivity, clearsightedness and deep humanistic culture, expressed at times in the form of fresh, spontaneous reflections or with meditated, careful evaluations, to portray his artwork and thought. With a noteworthy selection of works from 1909 to 1974 including the principal themes and subjects of his art, the gallery has created a unique opportunity for discovery, fittingly so in London, a city de Chirico described in his Memoirs as “extraordinarily metaphysical.“8 De Chirico’s visual artwork is accompanied by a selection of written work in Italian and English, some of which translated and published for the first time. The selection of writings comprises of various styles and genres, critical thought and dream-like reflections, formal speeches and even a few rare and intimate love letters. A temporal arch, commencing at the start of his artistic career with two letters (1910-1911) written by the then 22-year-old artist who had just discovered Metaphysical Painting and his path in art, extends all the way up to 1973, when the 85-year-old Maestro provided a precious indication that 26

Presenti qua e là in Ebdòmero sono anche i nuovi soggetti pittorici nati durante il secondo soggiorno parigino dell’artista dalla metà degli anni Venti: i Gladiatori e gli Archeologi, i Cavalli in riva al mare, e i templi, le colonne e le rovine del mondo classico, insieme agli armadi e alle poltrone del tema dei Mobili nella valle che, come si legge altrove nell’opera scritta, posti in mezzo alla natura aperta rappresentano improvvisi ripari “da tutte le persecuzioni degli dei e degli uomini“6. Tuttavia, oltre ai soggetti ricorrenti e alla descrizione di ambientazioni, vale la pena di sottolineare la corrispondenza che esiste tra la ricca intensità della prosa e la libera spontaneità dello stile pittorico delle opere eseguite da de Chirico contemporaneamente alla stesura dello scritto. Il luminoso naturalismo della pittura della fine anni Venti, con soffici pennellate in stile renoiriano, è riscontrabile in mostra nell’insieme di nature morte o “vitesilenti“7 – come l’artista ha poeticamente ribattezzato questo genere classico –, degli anni 1930 e 1934 e il bellissimo Nudo del 1930.

Leggendo de Chirico, è possibile, quindi, come visto nella correlazione tra l’opera pittorica, le parole e le immagini evocatrici del romanzo Ebdòmero, cogliere aspetti e dimensioni insolite dell’evoluzione dei molteplici soggetti e stili pittorici dell’artista.

Porre l’enfasi su de Chirico scrittore in una mostra alla galleria Tornabuoni Arte di Londra significa aprire agli studiosi internazionali un panorama del pensiero astratto del Maestro in forma concreta, rendere la Metafisica, l’enigma e l’inspiegabile, in forma di parole, le sue parole. Quale veicolo migliore della parola stessa dell’artista come ambasciatore della sua arte ad accompagnare l’opera visiva e materiale, cosa che fa a volte con delle riflessioni fresche e immediate e altre meditate con un’attenta valutazione frutto della sua sensibilità, capacità di visione e di profonda cultura umanistica. Con una notevole rassegna di opere, datate dal 1909 al 1974, che include i maggiori temi e soggetti dell’arte dechirichiana, la Galleria ha creato un’occasione unica di incontro e di scoperta, proprio a Londra, città descritta “quanto mai metafisica“ da de Chirico nelle sue Memorie8.

L’opera visiva è accompagnata da una selezione di scritti in italiano e in inglese, alcuni dei quali tradotti e pubblicati per la prima volta. L’antologia comprende vari stili e generi, pensiero critico e riflessione sognante, discorsi ufficiali e persino delle rare e intime lettere d’amore. revealed an enigma.9 In this long and productive lapse of time, the artist’s theoretical and critical essays (of which six have been chosen for the present catalogue) keep the tension high on his reflection on art and reality.

Making available such diversified material is a perfect way for readers to get acquainted with: “The writer, the thinker, the dreamer, the poet, the metaphysician, the observer, the fortune teller, the prophet, the scrutinizer, the reasoner, the asker of riddles, the appraiser, the seer, the seeker of new songs,“ characters who, according to Hebdomeros, are on the road to extinction owing to the materialistic and pragmatic orientation of civilisation at the start of the century.

De Chirico’s early Metaphysical period (1910-1918) saw an intense activity in theoretical writing, with intimate reasoning, philosophical thoughts and poetry collected in the Parisian manuscripts known as Testi teorici e lirici [Theoretical and Lyrical Texts],10 part of which was owned by Paul Éluard (later passed on to Picasso) and another part by Jean Paulhan. Written in French between 1911 and 1915, these writings constitute the first formalisation of Metaphysical Art, beginning with the phenomenon of “revelation“ that had taken the artist by surprise in the autumn of 1910 in Florence when he had the strange impression he “was seeing everything for the first time“ and the composition of his first Metaphysical painting appeared in his mind, L’énigme d’un après-midi d’automne [The Enigma of an Autumn Afternoon], an event he described as inexplicable and would form the base of his artistic conception. In the text Sur l’optimisme [On Optimism] and in two brief passages, one regarding the phenomena of revelation (V), and the other on the function of belief in religion and in philosophy (VI), de Chirico ponders on the conventional and historical manner of seeing the world and his own way of observing reality through the quintessence of thought. Two delightful poems, Espoirs [Hopes] and Le Chant de la gare [The Song of the Railroad Station] taken from the manuscripts, present elements from the Italian Piazza theme – the smokestack, the little flags, the fountain – in an atmosphere of joyous anticipation: “Provided the clock does not stop.“ Willard Bohn, who translated the French poems in English and did a metrics analysis, noted a striking modernity in the compositions, which are not based on the metric scheme of French prosody.11 Similary to de Chirico’s painting, in which he breaks away from Renaissance perspective in order to create a new visual experience of space, his poetry goes beyond the compositional rules of metre and syntax, creating, in this way, new and unexpected effects. del ventiduenne artista che scopre la Metafisica e definisce la sua strada, ad una tarda, preziosa indicazione dell’ottantacinquenne Maestro che rivela un mistero nel 19739. In questo lungo e fruttuoso decorso temporale, saggi teorici e critici dell’artista – di cui sei sono stati scelti per il presente catalogo – tengono alta la tensione della sua riflessione sull’arte e sulla realtà. Rendere accessibile un tale materiale in lingua italiana e in traduzione inglese è un modo eccellente per far conoscere: “il pensatore, il sognatore, il poeta, il metafisico, l’osservatore, l’indovino, il vaticinatore, lo scrutatore, il deduttore, l’interrogatore di enigmi, il valorizzatore, il veggente, il cacciatore di canti nuovi“, personaggi preziosi che, secondo il de Chirico-Edbòmero, sono in via di estinzione a causa dell’orientamento materialista e pragmatico della civilizzazione dell’inizio secolo.

La prima Metafisica degli anni 1910-1918 è accompagnata da un’intensa attività di scrittura teorica da parte di de Chirico, con ragionamenti intimi, riflessioni filosofiche e poesie raccolte nei manoscritti parigini, di cui una parte conservati da Paul Éluard (ceduti successivamente a Picasso), e un’altra da Jean Paulhan, conosciuti come i Testi teorici e lirici10. Scritti in francese, tra il 1911 e il 1915, l’insieme costituisce la prima teorizzazione formale dell’Arte metafisica partendo proprio dal fenomeno della “rivelazione“ che ha colto l’artista all’improvviso a Firenze nell’autunno del 1910 quando gli è sembrato di “vedere tutte le cose per la prima volta“ e gli è apparsa la composizione della prima opera metafisica, L’énigme d’un après-midi d’automne, un evento che descrive come inspiegabile e che sarà basilare della sua concezione artistica.

Nei manoscritti de Chirico riflette sul modo comune e storico di vedere il mondo e sulla sua maniera di osservare la realtà attraverso la quintessenza del pensiero: nel testo Sur l’optimisme [Sull’ottimismo] e nei due brevi passi, uno sul fenomeno della rivelazione in arte (V), e l’altro sulla funzione della credenza nella religione e nella filosofia (VI). Due incantevoli poesie, Espoirs [Speranze] e Le Chant de la gare [Il canto della stazione], tratte dai manoscritti, presentano elementi del tema della Piazza d’Italia – la ciminiera, le bandierine, la fontana – in un’atmosfera di gioiosa attesa: “A patto che l’orologio non si fermi“. Willard Bohn, che ha tradotto le poesie francesi in inglese ed eseguito l’analisi metrica, rivela la notevole modernità delle composizioni, che non sono basate su uno schema metrico convenzionale della prosodia francese11. Come nell’opera pittorica, dove de Chirico

poems in Italian and a text in prose, L’arcangelo affaticato [The Weary Archangel], were written in Ferrara in 19161918. The latter, in particular, offers valuable indications for understanding the elements coming to light in the Metaphysical Interior theme, such as “the wall’s motionless curtain“ and the impenetrable reality of objects and the laws that command them: “the terrible naturalness, the inexorable logic that each object – destined by the immutable laws of gravity to remain on the earth’s crust – carries within, printed on its Centre,“ objects such as drawing triangles and rulers, biscuits and candy sticks positioned in complicated structures in the paintings. Six poems from the artist’s second Parisian period, with a seventh, written in Florence in 1933 and dedicated to Isabella Pakszwer, the painter’s companion and future wife (later known as Isabella Far), complete the section that acts as an introduction to de Chirico’s poetry comprising of a corpus of 108 compositions.12 The manuscripts of six of the French poems are on exhibit.

The section dedicated to de Chirico’s theoretical and critical written work includes six essays, datable to the two main moments of his theoretical production.13 The first period refers to his collaboration with various Italian periodicals from 1918 to 1925, with ca. 30 pieces published, and the second, to the early 1940s with contributions to a number of major publications such as Stile and L’Illustrazione Italiana. In 1945, after settling permanently in Rome at the end of World War Two, de Chirico published his autobiography Memorie della mia vita [The Memoirs of Giorgio de Chirico (integrated with a second part in 1962)14] and Commedia dell’arte moderna [The Comedy of Modern Art] in which he brought together previously published essays and new written work. The publication’s substantial body of essays comprises of in-depth examinations of his own art, elucidations on the material and spiritual essence of painting and an endless range of reflections on classical and contemporary art, together with pondered considerations and fulminating judgments addressed to art critics and intellectuals.15 In examining the six theoretical essays in the present catalogue, five of which are from The Comedy of Modern Art, and a sixth, Il cervello e la mano (sul disegno) [The Brain and the Hand (On Drawing)], published posthumously

by Fondazione Giorgio e Isa de Chirico,16 the reader will be surprised by the clarity the artist expresses himself with on conceptually difficult subjects like “revelation“ (a fundamental element in his work), the manifestation of phenomena of the universe, the intelligence and intuition of genius, the image as a form of thought and the phenomenon of dream. Among the attentive studies de Chirico devoted to the painters of the past, with texts on the work of Raphael, Tintoretto, Max Klinger, Courbet, Renoir and Gauguin, his essays on the art of Gaetano Previati and Vincenzo Gemito are published in English here for the first time.

An homage to the recently deceased painter, de Chirico’s essay on Previati is a meticulous and illuminating analysis of the work of an artist, who, however different from himself, indeed contains a number of keys to understanding the light-shadow relationship in Metaphysical Art. Commencing with a description of the specific context of Ferrara, birthplace of the divisionist painter, de Chirico speaks of a mysterious presence in the city of “certain traces of its grand mediaeval night.“ Previati – he writes – profoundly felt the Middle Ages’ symbol of night and expressed it in a sincere and pure manner. He affirms that a mysterious kinship exists between this symbol and that of the Greeks – day –, 30

moglie del pittore (conosciuta poi come Isabella Far), completano la sezione che si pone come introduzione al corpus dell’opera poetica di de Chirico, che comprende centootto componimenti12. I manoscritti di sei delle poesie francesi sono presenti in mostra.

La sezione dedicata agli scritti teorici e critici comprende sei saggi13 che si collocano nei due momenti principali della produzione teorica dell’artista, quello della sua partecipazione a diverse riviste italiane degli anni 1918-1925, con una trentina di articoli pubblicati, e un secondo periodo, all’inizio degli anni Quaranta, con contributi ad alcune delle maggiori riviste dell’epoca come “Stile“ e “L’Illustrazione Italiana“.

Nel 1945, stabilitosi oramai a Roma al termine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, pubblica Memorie della mia vita, autobiografia che sarà integrata con una seconda parte nel 196214, e la Commedia dell’arte moderna nella quale riunisce testi degli anni precedenti con testi inediti. Il corpo sostanziale della pubblicazione consiste in approfondimenti sulla propria arte, delucidazioni sull’essenza materiale e spirituale della pittura e una gamma infinita di riflessioni sull’arte antica e contemporanea, insieme a ponderati ragionamenti e fulminanti giudizi rivolti ai critici e agli intellettuali15.

Nel consultare i sei saggi teorici pubblicati nel presente volume, di cui cinque fanno parte della Commedia, e un sesto, Il cervello e la mano (sul disegno), pubblicato postumo dalla Fondazione Giorgio e Isa de Chirico16, il lettore sarà sorpreso dalla chiarezza con la quale l’artista si esprime su argomenti concettualmente difficili come la manifestazione dei fenomeni dell’universo, l’intelligenza e l’intuizione del genio, l’immagine come forma del pensiero e il fenomeno del sogno. Tra gli attenti studi che de Chirico ha dedicato ai pittori del passato, tra cui Raffaello, Tintoretto, Max Klinger, Courbet, Renoir e Gauguin, i suoi saggi sull’arte di Gaetano Previati e di Vincenzo Gemito sono qui pubblicati in traduzione inglese per la prima volta.

Un omaggio al pittore da poco scomparso, il testo su Previati è una meticolosa e illuminante analisi che, pur parlando del lavoro di un pittore molto diverso da lui, contiene alcune chiavi per comprendere il binomio luce-ombra nell’opera metafisica. Partendo dalla descrizione del contesto particolare della città di Ferrara, che ha visto i natali dell’artista divisionista, de Chirico parla della misteriosa presenza in città di “lembi della grande notte medioevale“. Previati – scrive – sentì profondamente il simbolo della notte del medioevo e lo ha espresso in modo sincero e puro.
