Providence Boat House

Academic Work | Advanced Studio | 2022

When tasked with creating a boat house for the Providence rowing club we began by contemplating water. What phenomena in water inspires us? What about water is alluring, and inspiring? I began by sitting by the river, drawing over its movements and studying its qualities. That process would become a semesters worth of work. How does one create architecture from the study of moving water?

The design is based on studies of multiple ripples in water, ripples that create a whole or current in water, and their intersection. I began by drawing and modeling these ideas. How can one create grains and ripples in architectural forms? How can many pieces become an architecture?

The crux of the studies was then created, a matrix. A matrix by which to design a boat house. A drawing which would incorporate these ideas and act as a frame for the architecture I was creating.

This culminated in an architecture defined by ripples or grains intersecting eachother, coupled with program and the need for boats.
