When tasked with creating a community-based space on Asheville’s French Broad Park, I was drawn to design a library and community hub. After researching Asheville’s libraries, I found this location would be excellent for a library facility. The project is driven to create a library and community space that accommodates all people while acting as a positive addition to the park it sits upon.
The design is based on simple forms that draw from classical proportions. The project is oriented for Northern light exposure and Western views of the park, river, and blue mountains. The project maximizes its location on the site to sit above the park for ample views and ideal solar panel collection.
The project accommodates a greywater treatment system, geothermal energy, radiant floor heating, and passive heating, cooling, and lighting.
The project appears to melt into the earth and connects walking paths throughout the park. Local stone and birch trees firmly ground the library into the landscape.
