Our Mission Statement:

“Our mission is to have a magazine devoted to His glory, provide cutting-edge stories important to today’s Christian, promote Christian-Judeo values we find important, and editorial content that your entire family can enjoy.”

Summer is over, and autumn has arrived, but you wouldn’t know that if you stepped outside! Don’t fret though, as cooler weather is on the way. Another school year is underway, and for the first time in 20 years, I have no children in grade school. I do, however, have three in college. It’s difficult to believe, but on November 5th, we begin our fifteenth year of publishing. So much has changed in the industry, and much is not for the good. I have watched countless magazines disappear completely or go straight digital. I’ve pondered the latter myself a few times to be completely honest. My team and I have decided to start converting Katy Christian Magazine and Fort Bend Christian Magazine into a subscription-based magazine. Over the next few years, you will see us slowly disappear from most of our free pick-up locations as we make this transformation. We have always considered our magazines a ministry, with the purpose of promoting Christian values in our respected communities. In order for us to accomplish this, we need two things – advertisers and paid subscribers. Without those essential ingredients, we (like any magazine) would cease to exist. Please help us reach our goal by subscribing today to either of our sister publications, or both! You can start receiving our magazines mailed to your house by sending a check to: Katy Christian Magazine and/or Fort Bend Christian Magazine 650 West Bough, Suite 150-170 Houston, TX 77024 The cost is $29.95 a year for one magazine, or $49.94 for both publications. Inside this issue is our second annual Health and Wellness Guide. Please take the time to see who you might need to use in the future for healthcare needs. Remember to always support our advertisers and please let them know that you saw the ads in our magazine. Joseph R. Following the Call Across Texas By Caitlin Richards Discovering his calling in high school, Dr. Taylor Sandlin, pastor of Sugar Land Baptist, knew what his profession would be, but not where it would take him. The ministry has taken him all over Texas strengthening his calling along the way. It all started in his hometown church of First Baptist Texarkana in Texarkana, Texas. “They nurtured not just me, but a lot of kids’ faith,” says Taylor. “They gave us chances to do things. I am very grateful to the folks that taught me the Faith as I grew up.” Taylor remembers preaching his first sermon as a sixteen-year-old for a Sunday night service. He says it was likely not very good, but he was grateful for the opportunity to try. As a youth, Taylor sought opportunities to preach, taught bible studies and went on mission trips. All of those places, he says, are where he discovered his calling. With the goal of attending seminary in mind, Taylor first enrolled at Texas A&M University to study speech communication. While at Texas A&M, Taylor was active in the Baptist student ministry and continued to seek out opportunities to preach and teach.

“I honestly got a lot of preaching opportunities,” says Taylor. “There were a lot of little churches outside of College Station that were willing to let a college student come preach on occasion. The only real way to learn to preach is to preach. So, it worked out well for me.” Continued on page 8

Besides opportunities to preach and teach, the Baptist student ministry is also where he met his wife, Alyson. After graduating in 2000, the two were wed and moved from College Station to Waco for Taylor to start seminary at Baylor University’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary. His first congregation was in Marlin at the First Baptist Church.

The Sandlins served there for a couple of years before moving to San Angelo to pastor Southland Baptist Church. While there they grew their family adding a daughter Sophie in 2004 and a son John Curtis in 2006. San Angelo was home for the Sandlins for 11 years, but felt God leading them to another congregation. “We loved the people at Southland Baptist Church, it was a hard

Prayer Requests At Fort Bend Christian Magazine, we believe in the power of prayer and we want to pray for you, your families, and our community. Taylor joined Sugar Land Baptist amidst a time of grief for the congregation, as they mourned the tragic passing of their previous pastor, Phil Lineberger. Taylor has helped lead Sugar Land Baptist into healing and a time of outreach and growth. “We are in a new season, and excited about getting into our community,” says Taylor. “We want our community to know we are here and care for them, and are looking for ways to connect with our neighbors.” Historically, Sugar Land Baptist has had more worship and sanctuary space than fellowship and Sunday school space. Plans for additional education space had been on the table for a while, and Sugar Land Baptist is now picking them back up. “Even though it is an internal initiative, we really see it as trying to make room for people,” says Taylor. “I am a big believer if we do church well, meaning we love one another and care for one another, we will experience growth. We want to create ways to connect with our community.” October / November 2019

Taylor discovered calling at a young age, and now at Sugar Land Baptist he is creating opportunities for youth to also discover their calling. Sugar Land Baptist has a full slate of interns, usually college students, that serve alongside the staff. “It is a wonderful way for people to discover calling,” says Taylor. “We also go on mission trips and our students are able to lead out on those trips, as well.” Outside of his calling, Taylor enjoys traveling with his family to visit family members, who are missionaries in other parts of the world, and other places Alyson has on her travel bucket list. Locally, the Sandlins enjoy trying the variety of restaurants the area has to offer. During their first year in the area, they tried so many new restaurants that they never ate at the same place twice. Taylor also enjoys photography, particularly capturing images of butterflies. He even has an Instagram account dedicated to his nature images @revtexag. To connect with Pastor Taylor Sandlin and Sugar Land Baptist, visit sugarlandbaptist.org or follow them on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.

Republican Candidates Work to Challenge the Blue Wave By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein Some very important political races are underway in Fort Bend County, and we thought it would be advantageous to our readers to share what we know about our Republican candidates. The Republican Primary provides a vet-

Greg Hill for Congress in the 22nd Congressional District Hill is running to replace Congressman Pete Olson, who announced he will be retiring at the end of his term. When asked what drew him to this particular political office, Hill stated that giving back to others is his primary motivation. “Many are qualified to serve, and truly all that is required to adequately serve another is to have the heart and willingness to do so. It requires a desire to want to do for others, and I have always had this desire. Aside from that, I have a wide range of experience that has served me well, from teaching high school Spanish, to serving our

country as a U.S. Border Patrol Agent, to working in the private sector, later running my own business, and finally serving since 2011 as a local council member, Mayor Pro-Tem for the largest city in CD22, and then Countywide Judge. Of course, college and later law school, and all other forms of education were growing points that have helped prepare me, and I have enjoyed serving others along the way.” His experiences have certainly formed him, but so have foundational values about what it means to be a true leader. “I am passionate about serving and helping others. One of my favorite quotes is ‘If serving is below you, leadership is beyond you.’ When serving on Pearland City Council, I enjoyed when folks would call me to get things done. This could be something as small as making a call to have a constituent’s trash picked up when a vendor mistakenly missed their home, or having an asphalt overlay done when potholes became an issue on someone’s street. to be in a position to help, and to have that desire to help. “From a public policy standpoint, and as a congressional candidate, the issues are a bit broader now, but can impact the voter on a local level and need to be addressed. I believe that we need adequate immigration reform. I believe that we need adequate health care reform, and not a one-size-fits-all model, and certainly not socialized medicine. I believe that the radical left is moving, by their own admission and resolve, to a socialist form of government. I believe that this is contrary to what our country is based on, and contrary to the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness that our founding fathers carved out for us in the preamble and creation of the United States Constitution. I am also pro-life, and an advocate for all of our Bill of Rights.” As a former Border Patrol Agent, Hill is in a unique position to comment on the current immigration crisis facing the U.S. “The same challenges exist today that existed in the mid-90’s ... we need more immigration judges, we need to do a better job of enforcing the laws that we have on the books, and streamlining the process to become a resident alien and naturalized citizen. We are a country founded upon immigrants, and should welcome immigrants to come in through the front door and assimilate to the American principles and ideology that have made us a great nation. A border wall is important, but not the end all be all. Proverbs says that he who builds a wall invites destruction. A wall alone will not cut it. We must seek a way to protect our borders not just with a wall, but with adequate enforcement and solutions.” Hill sees the Congressional race as a calling, and one requiring humility and a true concern for others. “We must be the model and light that others turn to, and not for our benefit, but rather for theirs.

Tricia Krenek for Texas State Representative - District 28 Tricia Krenek is running for State Representative after years of serving in our local community. She has lived in Fulshear since 2011, where she served two terms on the Fulshear City Council and as Fort Bend County GOP Precinct Chair. The leading Republican contender for Judge of Fort Bend County Court at Law No. 3, Krenek lost to the Blue Wave that surprised Republicans and has spurred them to double down on their efforts to take back the county. “On the Fulshear City Council, I used my legal skills and business acumen to focus on developing policies to efficiently and effectively provide governmental services and infrastructure, spur economic development, improve local quality of life, and foster the values important to residents. during my two terms. I am active in our local Republican party and have been endorsed in this special election by more than 70 current and former local elected officials, community leaders, and grassroots activists. They know me, and they know my record of service and results to the community.” Krenek is passionate about service to others and working to improve the quality of life for every family in House District 28. She is focused on important issues like property taxes, public education, and border security. “Helping this district--our community--and our great state reach our full potential is the driving force behind my passion for and commitment to public service.” She explained, “This election is not about me. It’s about working together to make our community stronger. I invite everyone to join our team and get involved in protecting and promoting the values that define our community. I want to champion your message in Austin, and your vote and support help me achieve that goal. Texans can have confidence that I will always put the needs of the district first. “Fort Bend County is a wonderful place to live and work because of the conservative principles that have made our economy and our community thrive and flourish. We must continue to have strong and experienced Republican leadership in Austin. I will use my experience for the benefit of all and would be humbled to be your voice in Austin.”

Jacey Jetton for Texas State Representative - District 26 Former Fort Bend Republican Party Chairman Jacey Jetton is running for the Texas House of Representatives for District 26. His interest in the office came from a growing concern about the changing political landscape in Fort Bend. “After getting married and having my first son, I grew worried about the education system in which he would learn, the values he would absorb from his surroundings, the opportunities he would have later in life, and the freedoms and liberty he would have to pursue his dreams. These all led me to get involved in the political process to fight to elect Republican leaders who share our conservative values. “I have watched as the district went from a nearly 40-point Republican victory in 2014 to barely a four-point Republican victory in 2018. Keeping our district in Republican hands requires fresh energy and a renewed dedication to what made America great, not more of the same from the establishment insiders who contributed to our Republican decline. I knew that I had to take action before we lose this seat to the Democrats.” Jetton has worked for Pro-life champion Glenn Hegar and served Continued on page 17

as a values-driven policy director during the 83rd Texas Legislature. He is the parent of two children in the public school system, a homeowner, and a business owner, so he understands the effects of property tax increases and government interference. “I’m deeply passionate about the American Dream and all the people seeking it today. The Founding Fathers’ belief in our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is the foundation for that dream. Here in Texas, we take pride in our rugged, hard-working conservative values and believe that our government should be limited and restrained by those who are elected to represent the people. This is what allows the people to pursue that great dream that the American experiment has delivered us.” Jetton is a pro-life conservative who believes in low taxes, limited government, and a secure border to keep communities safe. He is a 7th generation Texan who stresses talking to our neighbors and advocating for conservative values. “The Democrats are lining up to take House District 26 from us and we can’t let that happen. I’m prepared to work hard in the community, connect with voters, and share what it means to be a hardworking, Texas conservative. That’s what it will take to keep this seat in Republican hands and keep the American Dream alive for future Texas daughters and sons.”

Caring for the Next Generation By Caitlin Richards As a family of five, Andy and Allisa Hovis know the highs, lows and everything in between that come with raising children. They have always been passionate about families and education, but when their first child was born in 2007, it brought a whole new perspective. As their youngest approached the start of kindergarten, they felt a stirring to put their passion for families into action in the Katy-area. “We knew we loved families and started reflecting on how we could serve families in our area,” says Allisa. “We wanted to turn our passion into something. That’s when we came across Children’s Lighthouse and realized it was perfect.” Children’s Lighthouse Learning Center, a childcare franchise, was founded in 1997 and focuses on quality early education and character values. Andy and Allisa felt opening a Children’s Lighthouse Learn-

ing Center of their own was the best way they could serve Katy community families. “Their curriculum, of course, focuses on education, but also so much more,” says Allisa. “Developing character and values in children is woven into everything, and that is really our heart. We really want to dig into these kids and give them the tools they need to grow into adults who positively contribute to our world.” Through Children’s Lighthouse curriculum, the Hovises want to ensure the next generation is equipped to guide their future into a positive direction. With all of the influences children are faced with today, establishing strong character and values is the key to ensuring their success, and a strong community. “Families are the bedrock of society,” says Allisa. “When we pour into the children of our community, we are helping build strong families. We want to come alongside parents and be a positive influence in their children’s lives.” Children’s Lighthouse Learning Center of Nottingham opens November 4, 2019. It will be located down the street from Kingsland Baptist Church and Nottingham Elementary at 20225 Kingsland Blvd. Katy, Texas 77450. Children six weeks of age to 12-years-old will be able to grow and learn at Children’s Lighthouse of Nottingham. Open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and with a before and after school program, they are excited to be able to serve families through caring for their children. “We believe our school will help working parents by allowing them to take a deep breath and know their children are being loved and served well while they are with us,” says Allisa. “Our school can be an extension of their home as we partner with parents.” Each month at Children’s Lighthouse of Nottingham, the curriculum will focus on a character attribute. Every week will then have a theme to strengthen the children’s understanding of the attribute. Continued on page 20

Children will also learn the importance of service in the community through service projects with community partners. “There is a lot of learning through play,” says Allisa. “It is so vital for young children. Our proprietary C.A.R.E.S.® curriculum supports child-led learning and encompasses centers, outdoor time, group activities, music, and so much more. Our foundation of character building and the way we care for our children are what set us apart from the rest.” Children’s Lighthouse of Nottingham also offers special classes and electives, including a science class, with live animals and experiments, fitness classes, a Spanish class, sports and dance. They also plan to create community experiences for the children by bringing in local community leaders. “We want to bring people in from the community so our children can have some one-on-one time with those leaders,” says Allisa. “We believe in providing them as many opportunities as possible to help expand their world view, and start fostering their own life vision and dreams.” On October 5 from 9 a.m. – noon, they will be hosting a casual

meet-and-greet at Minuti Coffee Shop for families to learn more, and meet the director and Allisa. The week of October 28 – November 1 their new facility will be open for tours. Interested families can call 281-770-4893 or visit their website childrenslighthouse.com/ nottingham for more information to enroll. “We really want to build up the families around us,” says Allisa. “We look forward to meeting our neighbors and partnering with them to raise the next generation to continue to build a strong community.” Save the date for their Winter Wonderland Grand Opening Celebration on December 7 from 9 a.m. to noon. The event will feature pictures with Santa, visits with Anna and Elsa from Disney’s Frozen, inflatable fun, and a variety of other holiday activities. Cracking the Code for Weight Loss By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein Middle age spread. Post-menopausal belly. Diabetes. High cholesterol. Poor body image. Americans are plagued by these problems now more than ever, and that made me ask this question: Why, when we’re more educated than ever, more health conscious than ever, and flocking to gyms in record number, are the bad numbers so high and the good numbers so low? I decided to talk through my frustrations with my friend, who just happens to be a nutritionist and dietician. She commiserated, then told me some of what she does, then shared some client success stories. I was intrigued. I had had success with Weight Watchers over a decade before, but it had been that long since I had sought dieting advice from a pro. I regularly hit the gym 5 days a week, walk my dog at least 2 miles a day, and stay abreast of all the latest food findings, so I thought I was in good shape, figuratively if not literally. But watching and feeling my body change as I age is slightly disconcerting. If I could slow the aging process, lose weight, and improve my health numbers, I was willing to find out more. So I scheduled an appointment with my friend, Patty Stewart of Sugar Land Nutrition. Patty has been in business for 14 years and has countless success stories. She works with a wide range of clients, all trying to lose weight and maximize their body’s strengths. As she said, we are all different and she is about helping each of us “crack our body’s code for weight loss.” One former client was none other than 16-year-old Simone Manual, who sought nutrition advice to improve her athletic performance and later went on to become an Olympic gold medalist swimmer. Patty also works with middle-aged women like myself who wish to stay ahead of the aging game while dealing with hormonal and other body changes. She also enjoys working with teenagers who want to learn to eat properly before heading off into life as adults.

The process began simply: Patty sent me a questionnaire that asked all about my food choices and preferences, my activity level, my concerns, and my goals. It was easy and made me think about my lifestyle, something I don’t do often. In our consultation, she reviewed the information and got a handle on my individual likes and dislikes - what would work for me and what wouldn’t. Then she asked me to hop on her cool, new-age InBody a fancy scale that measures not only your weight, but your lean body mass, water mass, fat, and distribution. No one likes to get weighed, and I’m no exception. But the accompanying graphs helped me to see where I am compared to where I need to be for optimal health. It was the perfect motivator to get me started. You should know that Patty never made me feel overweight or ashamed. I know that’s a big fear for people considering getting health advice. But whatever you’re doing is not bad enough to scare a nutritionist. They take joy in helping you get better, not in judging

you for your past. So Patty simply reviewed my results and promised to send me a meal plan catered to my preferences and activity level. Within 24 hours, she did just that, along with a packet of recipes. All I had to do was follow her meal plan using the recipes she provided and see her again in 4 weeks. I enjoyed shopping for vegetables versus processed foods. I enjoyed eating different meals and discovering that I truly liked them! I enjoyed not having to pour over cookbooks or buy strange ingredients. In fact, my grocery bill was cut in half! But mostly what I enjoyed was not feeling overly full after a meal and not regretting what I had just eaten. 4 weeks later, I had lost 10 pounds. My lean muscle mass had stayed the same, which meant I lost fat and water weight. No wonder I was no longer bloated and my stomach wasn’t protruding as it had been. Patty was congratulatory and encouraging: “I am so proud of you! Now, let’s talk about keeping this going.” She questioned me about what worked for me and what didn’t. I asked questions and sought guidance. I was nervous over an upcoming vacation, an 18hour car ride that almost inevitably meant fast food. Instead, she gave me advice for “on the road” meals that I could pack in a cooler. Guess what? I followed her advice, then stocked our condo with healthy foods, and came back having gained not a pound and feeling fantastic, SO much better than I would have if I had followed my normal travel routine. A couple days later, the pounds starting dropping again. When I returned for my next visit, I had lost another 5 pounds: at this point 8 pounds of fat lost, no lean body weight loss, and 3 inches off my waist. More importantly, I was full of energy and feeling better than I had felt in years. The journey continues and at the time of this writing, I’ve lost

20 lbs, far more than I expected. Patty has all kinds of tools in her toolbox. She has determined my body shape and the best (and worst) foods for me to consume. She introduced me to grains, seeds, fruits, and vegetables that not only keep weight down but provide anti-aging oxidants and additional health benefits. And each visit, she is supportive and genuinely happy with me about my progress. But the best part, to me, is knowing that I’m doing the best thing for my body and overall health. A nutritionist is the real thing: someone who spent years getting an education, researching the benefits of specific foods, and studying how those foods interact with various bodies. In Patty’s case, she is also someone who has paid particular attention to foods and supplements that can slow the aging process and all its corresponding effects on our bodies and our health. She was exactly what I needed. If you think she might be exactly what you need as well, check her out at pattyrd.com. Mention this article and get 10% off your first consultation with Patty. Finding Solutions: DK Sprinklers By Caitlin Richards A passion for problem solving and people led Danny King to establishing DK Sprinklers, a lawn sprinkler and outdoor lighting system provider. After working in downtown Houston for several years, Danny and his wife Nathaly moved to the Katy area. He then took the leap of entrepreneurship and started DK Sprinklers. “He enjoys working with people and he enjoys solving problems,” says Nathaly. “With the nature of sprinklers being underground, it can be a challenge to figure out what is going on when something is wrong. It’s a puzzle for Danny to find a solution.” Danny works closely with his clients to identify the best solution. He takes the information given to him from a client and pairs it with his nine years of experience to find a solution. Danny is all about customer service and listens to his clients to meet their needs. DK Sprinklers also serves customers by doing routine inspections where he will regularly come out to ensure the system is functioning to its fullest potential. “Depending on the season, a system will usually need adjustments,” says Nathaly. “It is important to have systems functioning their best year-round, and meeting the needs of the season. We don’t want there to be too much water or dry spots in your lawn.” When it comes to adding a sprinkler system to your home, DK

Our Story Love and Joy is a community-based organization that has been servicing the developmentally disabled-homeless population of Houston for over 20 years. The program offers state of the art treatment and services to people with behavioral health issues. We are dedicated to providing quality services, protection of rights, and individualized planning and care to our consumers and their families. Unfortunately, the prospects of executing a dream project 10 years in the making, including construction of a new facility that would have housed an additional 140 beds, went up in smokes. The facility burned down with a lot of materials inside. People depend on us to be strong, and that we must be. Just because our building went up in smoke, doesn’t mean our dream has to as well. With your help we will rebuild the facility, so that we can continue to help the mentally ill homeless population.

Recipe: One Pot Chicken Parmesan Pasta By Hannah Menslage

Ingredients: • 2-3 boneless skinless chicken breasts, diced into bite sized pieces • 1 tsp Italian seasoning • 1/2 tsp garlic powder • 1 medium yellow onion, minced • 3 cloves garlic, minced • 16 oz. dried short-cut pasta • 24 oz. jar marinara sauce • Water to fill empty marinara sauce jar • 1 cup mozzarella cheese • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese • Salt and pepper, to taste • Additional dried Italian seasoning, optional • Fresh parsley and/or basil, minced for garnish

Directions:

2. Add onion and garlic to the pot and cook about 2-3 minutes, until soft. Pour in marinara sauce, fill up empty sauce jar with water and add to the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a strong simmer. 3. Add chicken and pasta, stir, and then cover and cook for 10-15 minutes, until pasta is cooked to your liking. Stir in Parmesan cheese and 1/4 cup of the mozzarella cheese. 4. Sprinkle remaining 3/4 cup mozzarella cheese on top of the dish and cook another 2-3 minutes, until cheese is melted and gooey. 5. Sprinkle with additional Italian seasoning if desired, and garnish with parsley or basil. Prep: 10 min. Cook: 20 min. Ready: 30 min.

1. To a large pot or skillet, add a drizzle of olive oil and heat over medium-high heat. Add chicken, season with salt, pepper, Italian seasoning and garlic powder. Cook about 5 minutes, until chicken is most of the way cooked through. Remove to a plate.

Travel Trends By Alisa Murray Alisa Murray Travel Design “Creating unforgettable experiences all over this beautiful world!” Have you created your bucket list? You list should reflect every place that you would like to experience during your lifetime. It is important to note things like adventures you’d like to take and the amount of physical activity related to them. For example, if hiking is on your things to do in your lifetime and it is a priority as well as enjoying some serious spa services, then I highly recommend you take the hiking and any other active trips earlier in your life when you are more physically able and know that the spa wellness excursions are something that can be enjoyed at any stage in your life. Prioritize everything on the list. In addition to creating an ultimate bucket list it is also worth noting that some travel experiences are dictated by seasons for example one does not typically travel to India in the middle of summer during the rainy season nor do you go to Africa in the month of May in the hopes of capturing the migration. Using a travel advisor that has the knowledge base will ensure that you do not find yourself at the right place of your dreams but at the wrong time to see what you have wished for. Making a bucket list is something that can always be changing however I always recommend making it as early as possible. Traveling with children dictates a whole different level of expertise at knowing exactly which experiences are going to be most remembered and enjoyed throughout the child’s life. Disney is best done after the age of 5 for example when the child can participate and remember his or her experiences. Finally, the list will be different for each family as the desires for experiences vary obviously amongst us. Camping in National State Parks and being around nature is lovely for some and a complete nightmare for others. The same goes with cruising. Once you have

your bucket list made though I advise setting each experience on a trajectory calendar that allows you to plot each of them out over the course of say 10 years. Then let your travel advisor know what these are so that he or she can create and be on the look out for specials and unique experiences related to your destinations. If for example something absolutely fabulous comes available then you can take advantage of that experience. Traveling is something that most people dream about but seldom do. Like setting goals it should be part of your lifetime achievements and I have found that by creating a travel bucket list you’re more likely to see the world and not just dream about it! Happy wandering ya’ll!
