Compounding Corner Pharmacy, Inc. ®

SINCE 2004

Veterinary Compounded Medications On September 1, 2015 the American Veterinary Medical Association Professional Liability Insurance Trust issued a risk awareness alert about veterinarians working with compounding pharmacies that advises veterinarians to work closely with compounding pharmacies to ensure their compounding pharmacy of choice complies with quality, state and federal standards.

ACCREDITED: The Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board (PCAB) accreditation is the highest attainable accreditation in compounding pharmacy. Make no mistake, they are the highest standards in the nation and the most difficult to achieve. Compounding Corner Pharmacy, Inc.® is the ONLY PCAB-Accredited pharmacy in Fort Bend County.

ENDORSED: United States Pharmacopeia (USP) <795> and <797> are the actual standards that compounding pharmacies are held to. PCAB is endorsed by USP, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and more than a dozen other professional organizations.

PROCESS VALIDATED:

How do you know it’s REALLY in there? The FDA allows manufacturers a +/- 20% error (There are several narrow therapeutic index exceptions). USP allows compounding pharmacies a +/- 10% error. We’ll let our potency testing speak for itself. Investment Losses: A Silver Lining?

U

nderstanding the tax basis of investments and the tax rules regarding capital losses can help you reduce your income and taxes. You can do this by generating losses to offset income or gains and by generating income or gains to utilize unused losses. You usually don’t have a gain or loss for tax purposes until you sell an investment. Therefore, you have a certain amount of control over the taxation of capital gain income. Put very simply, the sale of investments and investment property generates a capital loss when the asset is sold for less than your adjusted basis in it. Although there are exceptions, adjusted basis generally refers to your cost, plus or minus certain adjustments. Let’s assume Hal purchases 10 shares of ABC stock in year one for $10,000. By year five, the fair market value of the stock has dropped to $8,000. Because Hal needs cash, he sells the stock in year five for $8,000. He has a capital loss of $2,000 ($8,000 sale price minus $10,000 basis).

With one exception, capital losses can be used only to reduce or offset capital gains tax. Capital losses must be netted against capital gains according to specific ordering rules. Excess losses can then offset up to $3,000 of ordinary income per year ($1,500 if you are married and file separately), assuming your taxable income is at least as much as the deduction. Losses remaining after the limit may be carried forward indefinitely to offset future income. Assume you had $5,000 in capital gains this year, but your capital losses amounted to $12,000. You could apply $5,000 in losses to offset all of your capital gains. You could also apply $3,000 against your ordinary income, thereby reducing it. The remaining $4,000 in losses could be carried forward to next year. Planning your year-end investment decisions with an eye to taking advantage of capital losses is important. If you expect to recognize a capital gain this year, you should review your investment portfolio for possible capital

losses to offset it. If you have any capital losses that can be carried forward to next year, you should review your portfolio for capital gain opportunities to make use of the capital losses. With all of the volatility in the markets this year, there has been opportunity to have both gains and losses. Take this opportunity to limit your taxes and upgrade your portfolio. After December 31st, you’ll have to wait another year. Call us today at 713- 853-0879. Let us take a closer look at your portfolio to see if we can find the silver lining for you. The building where the Old Main Street Bakery is located is one of Rosenberg’s oldest buildings built in 1910. Originally, the second Mayor of Rosenberg, R.T. Mulcahy, and his family owned the building, and the mayor’s office was located upstairs. From 1948-1952, it was Simmon’s Food Market, and in 1952, it became White Auto Store. A few businesses – and a few years – later, it was renovated in 2014 and opened as the Old Main Street Bakery in February.

T

he Witt Pit is a cozy little cottage on Highway 36 with a big screened deck, nestled around a huge oak shade tree. Owners Randy and Shaunna Witt consider Texas BBQ an art form and offer a quick-serve line with mouthwatering smoked meats, huge potatoes and sandwiches, homemade sides and desserts. After 16 years of catering corporate and special events, they are thrilled to have a new home. Come see what Fort Bend is talking about. Thanks for the votes y’all!

Why Document Preparation Websites Can Cost You

T

he phrase “do-it-yourself” is often used in the context of home improvement, cooking or craft projects and is usually associated with saving money. However, unlike a failed attempt at baking the perfect bread, using a document preparation website to draft your legal documents can cost you more than just your dough. As any good attorney will tell you, always read the fine print. Before you use a document preparation website to do things like form a company or draft a will, consider these two points. First, document preparation websites are not a substitute for consulting with an attorney. Chances are that if you are seeking to draft a legal document, you are also seeking related legal advice, advice which you will not find on a document preparation website. In fact, one of the top document preparation websites states in its Terms of Use that it does not review a user’s answers for legal sufficiency, draw legal conclusions, provide legal advice, opinions or recommendations about a user’s legal rights, remedies, defenses, options, selection of forms or strategies, or apply the law to the facts of the user’s particular situation. In fact, this document preparation website further disclaims that the legal information contained on its site is “not guaranteed to be correct, complete or up-to-date” and that its services are “not substitutes for the advice or services of an attorney.”

TO ADVERTISE: 281.690.4242 or www.fortbend

Second, these websites treat your legal issue in isolation. Yet, one document can create a ripple effect in your legal issue pond. Attorneys are trained to spot legal issues and can advise you on the potential impact of your document as it relates to your particular situation now and more importantly, in the future. Document preparation websites can give you a false sense of security because they do not alert you to potential future issues. Say, for example, you use a document preparation website to prepare your own will and unknowingly make a mistake. Perhaps the online form you used was out of date or incomplete, or maybe you accidentally checked the wrong box when answering a question. Or, perhaps you failed to consider the tax implications of your selections. Now, your will is tucked away in a drawer in your home. Though the mistake may be fixable, it creates an unnecessary headache that will require time and money to resolve. In short, document preparation websites offer legal documents at an affordable price by offering a one-size-fits-all approach. But, your legal issue is exactly that, your legal issue. While you might save money in the short term, a document that does not provide your legal solution can end up costing you more in the long run. Fort Bend ISD Welcomed 20 Foshan High School Students for Educational Exchange Program

Dulles High School (DHS) Principal Ronnie Edwards, DHS students Samuel Ramirez, Sarah Zou, Taylor Zylicz, Marina Baez, Sanika Phanse, Brittany Dominguez, Assistant Principal Corey Stewart and Chinese delegates Leo, Vicky, Sunny, Cherry, Pearl and Cindy at DHS during the two-week educational program.

F

ort Bend Independent School District (FBISD) welcomed 20 students from China’s Foshan #2 High School for a two-week educational exchange program, sponsored by the Fort Bend County Global Initiative in conjunction with FBISD. The students arrived in the United States on Sunday, September 20th and connected with their host families at a welcome dinner at Safari Texas Ranch. During their visit, the students were introduced to the American educational system, developed their English language skills, enjoyed southern cuisine and other aspects of American culture. Leo Zirui was one of six exchange students to attend host campus Dulles High School. “I enjoyed studying with my American friends and teachers and learning more about American culture,” he said. Seven other Chinese delegates attended Austin High School, and the remaining seven students were at Kempner High School. To help get the delegates acclimated to their new school environment, the students were paired with an FBISD high school student to shadow throughout the day. After school, the students enjoyed time with their host families to learn about their traditions and way of life. Austin High School Associate Principal Janis Longmire was host parent to two exchange students, Ellen and Wendy. “I was really excited about being a host mother,” said Longmire. “Our first moments together were spent learning their TO ADVERTISE: 281.690.4242 or www.fortbend

likes and dislikes, especially regarding food. I then had to familiarize them with various items in my home, such as shower fixtures, because they’re different than what they have in China.” Longmire arranged several after-school and weekend trips for the girls as well. “I took them bowling and to the Palladium theatre for a movie. My college-age daughter and I also planned a tour of the University of Houston so that they could see what college life is all about.” FBISD also planned several educational and recreational trips for the group. The delegates visited NASA and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, enjoyed a Dynamo soccer game, a FBISD high school football game and other fun events. One of the highlights of their visit included riding on their very own float in the Fort Bend County Fair Day Parade. “We wanted them to experience as much of the Fort Bend County experience as possible during their two-week stay with us,” said Lorelei Thorp, Kempner High School English as a Second Language teacher. Thorp worked closely with FBISD’s Deputy Superintendent Dr. Christie Whitbeck in spearheading the educational exchange program in FBISD. She and other adult chaperones accompanied the youth on their fieldtrips throughout their stay. In 2012, Fort Bend County leaders, including representatives from FBISD, Lamar Consolidated School District and the University of Houston at Sugar Land, signed a memorandum of understanding with the Chancheng District Bureau of Education Foshan City of the People’s Republic of China to form friendly cooperation relating to the economy and trade, education and training, environment protection and cultural exchange. Through the educational partnership, students of each school district receive various learning opportunities through such activities as student and teacher exchanges, summer learning camps and cultural exchanges in sports, choir and other areas of learning.

Delegates enjoyed riding a float in the Fort Bend County Fair Day Parade.

Child Advocates of Fort Bend Honors Legislators

WILL SEE YOU NOW Ruthanne Mefford, Larissa Plunto of Lois Kolkhorst’s office, John Zerwas and Vicki Spriggs.

Child Advocates of Fort Bend, one of the 72 local Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) programs in Texas that recruit, screen and train volunteers to advocate for children in court, honored Senator Lois Kolkhorst and Representative John Zerwas with Texas CASA Big Voices for Little Texans™ awards on October 30th at the agency’s Davis George Center in Rosenberg. This award recognizes legislators for their outstanding leadership and dedication to improving the child protection system and ensuring the most vulnerable children’s voices were heard at the Capitol during the 84th Legislative Session. “These legislators are strong advocates for CASA and are both very deserving of this recognition,” said Ruthanne Mefford, Chief Executive Officer of Child Advocates of Fort Bend. “We are fortunate to have their support as they continue to show us that they care about the best interests of children and youth in the child protection system.” During her first session as a state senator, Kolkhorst authored critical legislation SB 830, which creates an independent ombudsman for children and youth in foster care housed within the Health and Human Service’s Commission’s (HHSC) ombudsman’s office. A leading voice on health and education issues in the Texas House, Zerwas sponsored SB 354, which moves administration of funding for CASA and Children’s Advocacy Centers to HHSC from the OAG. Additionally, as chair of the House Higher Education Committee, he helped advance HB 3748, the foster children education bill, through Committee at a crucial point in the session. Kolkhorst and Zerwas are two of a dozen legislators Texas CASA has chosen to honor for being legislative champions and leaders this past session in partnership with the local CASA programs in their districts. Hometown Heroes:

Niraj Patel, M.D.

G

enerosity, compassion, benevolence. These are words to describe people who care for their fellow man, no matter who they are or where they live. Men and women of all cultures and religions, uniting for a purpose, to help other people in need. Heroes, who donate their time for something they believe in, a cause, a fight, a lasting imprint. Humanitarians who make a difference. The team at Hope Endowment made a promise when they began working with the orphans in India, “to shelter and educate a child from Niraj Patel, M.D. youth to adulthood.” Thanks to a group of devoted individuals, tirelessly working to help these children, the dream has become reality. When Dr. Niraj Patel was ten-years-old and in the fourth grade, he and his parents moved to India for a year. During this time, Patel was impacted by small children begging for food on the streets. Many of them with very little clothing, the pain and desperation on their faces left a lasting impression. He made a promise to God to find a way to feed the orphans in India. Fast forward to 2004, when Molly Philip, a nurse in Houston who also grew up in India, was struck by the sight of malnourished, homeless children in the southern state of Kerala and vowed to help them. She started the Good Shepherd Foundation, housing 12 orphans and providing food and shelter for them. Later that year, God intervened, and Philip met Patel during a chance meeting. She told her story, and he offered her his support. Together, they traveled back to Kerala (Kochin) and built a two-story building that

is home to 60 children and offers education, healthcare, food and shelter. They continued to expand to two new locations in Gujaret, India. The Kerala Government recognized the facility in Kochin as a “Center of Excellence,” and they recommended this center be used in the development of future orphanages. The Dumda location has a tree called the “Tree Of Hope” that would later become the logo for the Hope Endowment. In 2009, with continued progress and support, Hope Endowment was officially established as a 501c3 charity. They were joined by a staff of passionate, devoted people, driven to continue the vision quest. The working board of Shilpa Patel, Dr. Nick Desai and his wife Dr. Nina Desai, Hemang Vyas and his wife Minal Vyas, Dr. Parin Shah, Dr. Atul Dhingra, Nitish Sethi and Dr. Nimish Kadakia spend countless hours utilizing their individual skills to continue the advancement of Hope Endowment. “If it wasn’t for the efforts of this team, this could never have advanced to the level it is at now,” said co-founder Patel. “This remarkable team has introduced Hope Endowment creating public awareness and are instrumental in the funding of our growth.” The first fundraising event for Hope Endowment took place in December 2009, with many taking place since then. Every year, corporate donors generously contribute items for the fundraising gala that generates thousands of dollars for the continued expansion of facilities in India. Individual donors’ money goes directly to the care of the children by providing food, shelter, clothing, medical care and education. To give a child a chance to live a normal life under unbearable circumstances is a gift from God. The care and devotion of the team of Hope Endowment have made a lifelong commitment to continue God’s work. These are the humanitarians who make a difference in this world. For more information, visit hopeendowment.org.

“Hope is not a destination, but rather a journey. Take the journey with us and share your passion, vision and time with others focused on the same goals.” – Hemang Vyas The Dumda location, home of the “Tree Of Hope.” TO ADVERTISE: 281.690.4242 or www.fortbend

The Exchange Club of Sugar Land, Sugar Land Rotary, The Exchange Club of Fort Bend, Second Mile Mission and Toys for Tots have partnered in a joint community service project to provide thousands of toys for Fort Bend County children this Christmas through Santa’s Exchange. Santa’s Exchange has been providing toys for less fortunate families since 1995. It began with Carolyn Tarver’s project, Stan’s Memory Includes Loving Everyone (S.M.I.L.E.), after her teenage son Stan was killed in an accident. Exchange Past President Ray Albrecht offered to help Project S.M.I.L.E. provide toys. The Exchange Club of Sugar Land and Sugar Land Rotary have been working together with Tarver for 25 years. The recent partnership with Toys for Tots and Second Mile Mission will help provide over 15,000 toys for children in Fort Bend County this year. Toy donation boxes will be located at local businesses, churches and Fort Bend ISD schools. Help children have a Merry Christmas by dropping a toy in a donation box or donating at http://stafford-tx.toysfortots. org.

The Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) recently named Representative Jimmie Don Aycock, chair of the House Public Education Committee who recently announced his retirement from the Texas House, as the recipient of the association’s “first ever” Champion of Education Award. TASB does not traditionally give this award, but the association chose to recognize Aycock’s service in a special way. TASB Board of Directors Ron Crier and Jim Rice presented the award to Aycock at a School Board Advocacy Network (SPAN) luncheon in Austin. Rice is also a Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees member. Aycock received the award due to his unwavering dedication to Texas public schools and the students the schools educate. Due to the demands of public service on family, TASB also extended its gratitude to Aycock’s wife for her support. Aycock has represented District 54 in the Texas House of Representatives since 2006 and will serve until his retirement at the end of the 2015 session. During his legislative career, he served on the Culture, Recreation and Tourism, Agriculture and Livestock, Defense and Veterans’ Affairs, Higher Education and Redistricting committees and most notably as chair of the Public Education Committee during the 2013 and 2015 sessions.

Focus on Worship

Celebrating the Season

T

he woman at the post office was absolutely clueless a few years back when C. Chappell Temple, lead pastor at Christ Church Sugar Land, A United Methodist Community, asked her about holiday stamps. Her reply was that they had a stamp with some nice winter scenes and then another one with “some lady and a baby. I’m not sure who she is.” Those who aren’t entirely sure either are welcome this Christmas to Christ Church Sugar Land to find out exactly who that baby was and why it matters that Jesus was born. Pop into any of the morning services at 8:15, 9:30 and 10:55 am for a new sermon series entitled Portraits of the Christ Child: The Eyewitness Accounts of Each of the Four Gospels as to what actually happened at the Nativity. Or, join Christ Church Sugar Land at 6 pm each Sunday night in December for the Advent musical programs to hear both classical and contemporary songs of faith for this season, including The Messiah on December 6th and Wayne Kerr on December 13th. Then, come for one of the candlelight Christmas Eve communion services on December 24th. A special one designed for children and their families takes place at 4 pm, followed by traditional celebrations at 6 and 8 pm and a contemplative acoustic service at 10 pm. Located in the heart of First Colony on Austin Parkway, just across from the middle school, Christ Church Sugar Land will be waiting to welcome you! For more information, visit www.christchurchsl.org or call 281980-6888.

V

iewing an exquisite work of art is like a spiritual experience. The heart beats faster, and there is a genuine appreciation for the composition and its creator. Absorbed in an overwhelming feeling of exhilaration, one feels renewed and elated. The endowment of BalletForte Dance Company and aspiring young dancers have given the Fort Bend community a gift through the artistic performance of classical ballet and contemporary dance. As they celebrate 20 years of regaling performances, the history of BalletForte is filled with talent, devotion and enrichment. Before becoming a dancer, Michael Banigan was a tennis player. Once he started his dance training at age 14 to improve his coordination, he never returned to tennis. He worked on the art of dance proficiency for several years and joined the Allegro Ballet of Houston. Banigan continued his career as a freelance dancer for several ballet companies predominately in Texas. In the summer of 2003, he was awarded a full scholarship to attend Regional Dance America’s Craft of Choreography Conference. His creative talent matured as he presented a new ballet, Comburent Conversations, as part of the Jewish Community Center’s “Dance Month.” After the commencement of BalletForte with Dianne Jarrell, Banigan discovered a great love of choreography, which is highlighted in many of the company’s poignant performances. Jarrell has been dancing since she was five years old, training under the tutelage of Denise Brown in Dallas. She performed with the Dallas Civic Ballet performing both leading and solo roles. She co-owned and directed the Dance Institute of Dallas until she moved to Houston in 1992. In 1996, Jarrell was working as a teacher at

a local dance studio where she met Banigan, who was teaching dance as well. They became friends and decided to partner together and open a ballet company. Soon after, they established a dance studio with 12 company dancers. Their mission is to “increase public awareness of the arts and to promote and foster an appreciation for excellence in classical ballet through education and performance opportunities.” BalletForte now has 40 dancers with a repertoire of both classical and contemporary dance. They are a member of Regional Dance America/Southwest and join approximately 21 member companies throughout Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma. One of BalletForte’s most anticipated performances is its full-length production of The Nutcracker each December. The first Nutcracker performance had approximately 20 cast members, and this year, it has over 120. Tryouts were August 29th, and practices are held each week until show time. The supporting cast consists of aspiring young students who return year after year to be a part of the magic of the season. Banigan enjoys teaching these novices. “Watching young dancers star in a professional production is gratifying and moving,” Banigan said. “They work so hard to gain confidence and poise. It makes everyone so proud and worth every minute of it.” Among those who enjoy performances of The Nutcracker are elementary and middle school students in Title 1 schools in Fort Bend ISD, Lamar CISD, Stafford ISD and Houston ISD. In the off season, BalletForte provides workshop classes for disadvantaged children to experience performing in front of an audience. The dedication and commitment of Banigan, Jarrell and the volunteers who donate their time

Holiday Wrap Up

Photo from The Container Store.

Thinking outside the box, I like the silver paint cans. They come in a variety of sizes and can be decorated in many fun ways. I am going to use holiday colored paper tape to make a striped design. You could also hot glue a beautiful ribbon around the can, or let your kids get involved with paint pens. Tie a bright bow to the handle to complete the look.

My favorite things here are the trims, especially the honeycomb Santa hat, snowman and Christmas tree. They are so much more fun that a regular bow! I just hope my dog doesn’t eat the red pom-pom.

“We believe the gift presentation should be just as special as the gift itself,” said Container Store Public Relations Coordinator Nina Miller. Their Gift Wrap Wonderland offers just about everything you will need – and then some! I love their chalkboard-themed boxes, paper, ribbon and tags in matte black that can be written on with chalkboard marker. I can’t wait to skip the sticker labels and write out the recipient’s name on the ribbon.

If you feel like you need a little extra guidance, General Manager Laura Ann Johnson said The Container Store hosts Wrap Parties on the weekends through Sunday, December 20th. They are at 1 and 3 pm and include cider, cookies and giveaways in addition to step-by-step tips and tricks on how to wrap like a pro. Another destination for inspiration is Trudy’s Hallmark in Memorial City Mall, Town & Country Village and Parkway Villages. “One of the new additions we have at Hallmark Gold Crown stores this year is our Makers Collection that features over 100 different options – roll wrap, bags, tissue, trims – that all coordinate and can be mixed and matched to create an easy, beautiful holiday package,” said Hallmark spokesperson Kristi Ernsting.

ou trekked the mall. You clicked “complete purchase” countless times. You went back to the mall. You made the last-minute gift card run. You even hit the mall “one last time.” You are done shopping, and your impressive collection of gifts just needs to be wrapped. Don’t let your energy falter now. Here are some fun, creative wrapping ideas guaranteed to dazzle and impress.

Check out tinyprints.com for some personalized gift wrap. You can create your own wrapping paper with favorite family photos or a fun message. Don’t forget to order the personalized gift tags too.

A cute option for labeling gift bags is to attach cardboard tags with decorative clothespins. As a bonus, you can reuse the bag next year because you haven’t ruined it with a sticker. What to do with all those gift cards? Buy some crazy Christmas socks, stuff the gift card down in the toe and tie it at the ankle with a festive ribbon. Need to give the kids something to do? Buy plain brown paper and have them make red polka dots on it with a pencil eraser and red ink pad. Clean out a Pringles can and let them cover it with holiday duct tape – great for gift cards, jewelry and other small gifts. Take an afternoon and assemble all your supplies. Nosh on some peppermint bark, play some holiday music and unleash your creative side. You’ve got this in the bag!

Holiday Eats & Treats F

rom savory centerpieces to rich, flavorful sides to cookies and candies aplenty, the holiday season is a time to appreciate a bounty of good food while surrounded by loved ones. Make this year’s celebration extra special with cooking tips and recipes that make a festive feast to remember as easy as can be. Start with a main dish carved just right, add an exciting twist on traditional staples and learn how unexpected ingredients make delicious seasonal sweets.

Prepping the Perfect Ham A baked ham is the perfect centerpiece to any holiday celebration. Follow these tips to ensure your seasonal meal’s main course is a sensation with guests: • Never thaw meat on the kitchen counter, as the external temperature can rise above 40 F while the inside remains frozen. Thaw in either the refrigerator or in cold water. • Plan ahead to clean up. Line your pan with aluminum foil. • To avoid dried-out ham, cook at 325 F, allowing 20 to 30 minutes per pound. • Place fat side up. The melting fat will baste your ham. Turn over halfway through baking to avoid uneven salting. • Do not use sharp utensils when turning the ham. Valuable juices may escape if the ham is pierced. • Use proper cooking times and temperatures. Cooking to at least 145 F will result in juicy, tender meat. • Let ham stand for 15 minutes after roasting before slicing. • Completely cook ham until done. Avoid partial cooking and storing in refrigerator for later use, which can contaminate the meat.

Finding the Line

A

s we enter the holiday season, my family always braces ourselves for the deluge of presents that our youngest generation receives. It’s a strange dissonance that we feel. We want to give these children we love gifts, yet when it’s all done and we are confronted with the mountain of boxes, trash, ripped paper and sometimes already forgotten new toys, we feel almost sick to our stomachs.

Let me start by saying I am nowhere even close to having any answers about this topic. I know that relative to most kids in the world, mine are extremely privileged. Life doesn’t hand every child the same tools or the same foundation, and my kids are on the high side of that bell curve. But, if there is one thing I am relatively sure of, it’s that all kids are blessed to live in a very small world. What I mean by this is that they can run out of the house with no keys, no cell phone, no wallet and no shoes and not have a care in the world. If I tried that, I’d probably have an anxiety attack within two minutes, maybe less. Kids don’t have the burden of responsibilities, nor the knowledge of just how privileged they are or how scary the world can be, and I envy that. I envy the “no shoes, no shirt, no fear” mentality that my boys have. And, while I think it’s important for our kids to slowly be integrated into the world and the understanding of empathy and responsibility their position gives them, I think it’s just as important for us adults to take some time to integrate ourselves into their world of carefree joyfulness. Christmas, for my family, is a great time to celebrate and join both of these worlds. Every family is different, but for us, my wife and I really try to stop being Scrooges about the gifts. We enjoy the kids’ faces, we are thankful for our blessings and we probably spend a little more

TO ADVERTISE: 281.690.4242 or www.fortbend

than we should, because life is short and you never know what it will bring. Let’s be honest, we don’t turn off our cell phones, but we do at least stop checking them every three minutes. But, we also try to open some of the older kids’ eyes to the larger world using those same techniques. Sometimes we bake cookies with the kids and then drop them by the local fire station on Christmas Day. We talk about how those people are not with their families so they can keep us safe. We’ve made stockings for soldiers and sent them off and visited local children’s hospitals and brought by gifts that the kids picked out. Again, every family is different. But, no matter how many or what holidays you celebrate, finding the line as a parent between giving your children gratuitous gifts and opening their eyes to the hardships of others is hard. So this year, I’m gearing up to let loose and enjoy as many minutes of my holiday as carefree as possible. If I can give my kids few minutes of care about others, maybe we all are on the right track.

Austin and Clements High School Football Teams Donate Breast Cancer Shirts Two Fort Bend ISD high school football squads recently made generous donations to the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s breast cancer patients. Football athletes from Clements High School and Stephen F. Austin High School donated a number of post-mastectomy, pocketed shirts. The shirts are specially designed for the unique needs of women who have undergone a mastectomy and will be given to patients over the next year. “All of us at the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital admire the selflessness, generosity and kindness that these The Stephen F. Moon Cakes, Lanterns and the Lunar Eclipse A traditional moon cake.

F

ort Bend residents rejoiced over the majesty of the moon and the joys of the harvest as they celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival. Every year on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar, when the moon is at its utmost brightness during the year, this festival occurs. This year was extra special as the lunar eclipse coincided with the MidAutumn Festival on September 27th. A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly behind the earth into its shadow. This can occur only when the sun, earth and moon are aligned with the earth in the middle. A lunar eclipse can occur only the night of a full moon. The festival is a popular celebration among many, including the Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese cultures. It marks the end of the harvest season. There are plenty of moon cakes, made up of bean paste or lotus-seed paste and packed inside a pastry layer. “Traditionally, the moon cakes had a salted, hardboiled egg yolk in the center to represent the moon, but today, moon cakes are made in so many ways,” said Fort Bend resident Terri Wang. “It is also common to see colored rice paste molded into animals and elaborate centerpieces filled with treats.” Traditionally, children gave pastries and tea to their elders with the help of parents. This was a chance for children to pay respect and connect with their

elders while giving thanks for the harvest and making wishes while gazing at the moon. The elders reciprocated by giving the children gifts and brightly colored lanterns with riddles. “Today, in Fort Bend, the festival circles mainly around family and friends, eating moon cakes, drinking tea and appreciating the moon,” said Judy Shin Lim. “Then, we walk in our neighborhoods, showing our brightly colored lanterns.”

Judy Shin Lim with Shawn and Justin Lim ready to walk the neighborhood with their paper lanterns at this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival.

There are many versions of a famous legend associated with the Moon Festival, but this adaptation is shared by many. The Jade Emperor, ruler of heaven, had 10 uncontrollable sons. One day, the 10 sons transformed themselves into 10 suns. This cruelly charred the earth from heaven. The Jade Emperor summoned Hou Yi, an immortal archerer renowned for his marksmanship, and ordered him to teach his sons a lesson. Hou Yi descended to earth and saw the damage with his own eyes. Everything was burnt and dead, and the

people were in anguish. Filled with anger, he proceeded. With his arrow, he targeted the suns. The first sun fell down, then another, until nine suns were down. This left nine of the Jade Emperor’s sons dead. Hou Yi left only one sun alive to give the earth light and warmth. The Jade Emperor was furious when he heard the news. He stripped Hou Yi and his beautiful wife Chang’e from their immortality and kept them on earth. Hou Yi and Chang’e were demanded to live on earth as ordinary mortals. Hou Yi knew about the immortal Queen Mother of the West, who lived on earth, and she had a rare supply of the elixir of immortality. Hou Yi reached the Queen Mother, and she gave him two things. One was the elixir; the other was a warning that drinking half of the elixir would grant everlasting life. He knew he had half for himself and half for his wife. When Hou Yi reunited with Chang’e, she was thrilled, but he was tired and needed rest. Chang’e could not resist peeking at the elixir he brought back. Her impatience to become immortal tempted her into drinking the entire potion, not knowing the consequence. Before long, she felt her limbs grow weightless, and she began to float into the sky against her will. Chang’e drifted to the moon, where she spent the rest of her days. Hou Yi lived the rest of his days on earth as a common man. Chang’e is forever known as the Goddess of the Moon. The celebration continues around the world to focus on rejoicing with family and friends, a culture and a legend.

Southminster School There is no doubt that parents are tightening their belts and trying to find ways to cut costs and save money. Many people live in areas with well-resourced or new public schools, making it very tempting to choose public over private. But what are the real differences? The class size in many public schools can be as large as 25 to 30 students. Southminster School’s maximum class size is 14. While many public schools do a good job of preparing students for the next step, Southminster School does an excellent job. The curriculum at Southminster School is advanced, rigorous and designed to challenge and grow students into successful, independent thinkers. They never “teach to a test” but rather design a curriculum around the individual child. Southminster School’s students are highly motivated and regard academic achievement as desirable. Students are expected to live by the Mariner Honor Code, which includes being respectful, noble, accountable and more. Those values are instilled and expected daily. Parents are highly involved and are welcomed and encouraged to be part of their child’s educational experience. At Southminster School, you are not just a client; you are family. Schedule a tour today to see what makes them different, or visit www.southminsterschool. org to watch a short video created by parents. Free Weight Management Seminar at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital December brings fun holiday parties, sweet cookie exchanges and family gatherings with an abundance of delicious food – and excessive calories. It’s no wonder weight loss tops the list of New Year’s resolutions. But only a few weeks after resolving to lose weight, it’s easy to find yourself back in front of the television, chips in hand while ignoring the dusty exercise bike in the corner. One survey found that 35 percent of people who make resolutions break them by January 31st, and according to the National Weight Control Registry, only 20 percent of dieters succeed at long-term weight loss. But don’t despair; mimicking the habits of the 20 percent could move you into that exclusive group. Here are some tips on how to be successful in your weight loss journey. Keep it Positive Think about the healthy behaviors you intend to create, not the bad ones you wish to break. Take a simple activity you already do daily, and create a new healthy habit to accompany it. For example, you might try stretching immediately after waking up or eating a handful of baby carrots after taking your daily multivitamin.

pare foods. Keep apples and nuts at hand to ward off snack attacks, and repackage food into single servings to avoid overeating. Allow for an occasional treat, preferably planned, served in a single portion on a plate and savored one leisurely bite at a time. Examine What Works The National Weight Control Registry is a database of more than 10,000 adults who have lost at least 30 pounds and maintained the loss for at least one year. Participants keep food diaries, stick to their diet even on weekends and get back on track quickly when their weight edges up. Other winning habits include exercising an average of one hour daily, eating breakfast every day, weighing yourself once a week and watching less than 10 hours of television each week. The average American watches 28 hours a week, which contributes to a sedentary lifestyle and potential weight gain. Visit houstonmethodist.org/weight-management for more information. 2016 LEXUS NX T

he 2016 Lexus NX is an all-new model that entered the impressive Lexus lineup last model year. This compact luxury crossover is the brand’s somewhat late first entry in this very popular and crowded segment. But, if you’ve been waiting patiently to purchase the Lexus NX, you’ll be happy to know that this car is definitely worth the wait. Lexus practically invented the luxury crossover with their iconic mid-size RX. This vehicle, built on the Camry platform, first appeared on American roads way back in 1998. It became an instant hit with its rich interior, an efficient V6 engine and a very smooth ride. Currently in its fourth generation, it continues to lead sales in its segment. But, car buyers without children who don’t need the roomier interiors have flocked to the smaller crossovers that also offer better fuel economy and a more fun ride. So, Lexus introduced the NX designed from top to bottom to appeal to a younger audience looking to step up into a luxury vehicle. The exterior features an aggressive grille and a muscular stance, making it very clear that this is no stodgy Lexus.

TO ADVERTISE: 281.690.4242 or www.fortbend

Approach the NX at night, and you’re welcomed by a beam of light on the ground and around the door handles as the interior slowly illuminates. The interior, designed to feel like a sports car, has that impeccable Lexus fit and finish with buttery leather and exquisite, real, exotic wood. The navigation and entertainment system is controlled by a touchpad, another innovation designed to appeal to younger drivers. The cargo area is wide and roomy enough to accommodate four golf club bags. The new NX is available in two versions, the gasoline powered 200t and the hybrid 300h. The base NX 200t, with an MSRP of $34,865, sports a newly developed 235 hp, 2.0 liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed transmission delivering fuel economy numbers of 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The NX 300h is powered by a 194 hp, 2.5 liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine working in unison with a pair of electric motors to get impressive fuel economy numbers of 35 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. The Lexus NX has everything it takes to attract a buyer looking to step up into a luxury brand that’s still a blast to drive. Your elderly aunt probably won’t approve. High School HOT SHOT

By Joan Frances

Meet R’riel Smith Photo by Chinita Smith.

R’riel a leader at Ridge Point High School and in community organizations, it is fulfilling to me, because I am trying to make a difference in my school and community. To be a leader requires the ability to step away from the crowd and be the one to make a difference. I also have the chance to inspire people to follow in my footsteps. As a leader, I am responsible to the group, to myself, to my community and to an ethical code. Being a leader allows me to know that I am affecting positive change.” In addition to her academic accomplishments, R’riel sang in the varsity choir and was engaged in the drama department productions at the school. She is a member of Habitat for Humanity and serves as the social media chair, volunteer coordinator and kickoff mentor. As a part of Delta Gems at the Houston Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., R’riel was selected and participated in the Presidential Youth Conference this year. She is the Silver Award Recipient with the San Jacinto Girl Scout Troop, is currently working on her Gold Award and has been a member since 2002, holding the offices of historian and troop photographer. When asked what value she lives by,

R’riel said, “Compassion. We are all part of this thing called the human condition. No doubt we have different skin colors, religious preferences and political points-of-view, but at the end of the day, we still need to take care of one another. Effort. No matter the outcome, there is always value in the effort when the effort is authentic and well-intended.” In her free time, R’riel is exceedingly generous. She hosted a student from China for two weeks and has donated over 900 hours to her community. She is also a photographer assistant at Video Photographer Productions, assisting in sessions with clients. R’riel is the lead caregiver at Smith’s Childcare Services, taking care of and nurturing children for neighbors, family and friends. Photo by Janice Harvey.

Living the Sweet Life: Enjoy Your Moments!

A

few months ago, Brian and I found ourselves in Mexico for our 25th anniversary vacation. Most of what we do on vacay is purposeful nothingness, which leads to a spontaneous burst of amazing insights and creativity. We are artists, after all. I am always shocked actually at how much gets done while doing nothing. The brain plays catch up from the craziness of a busy life. Sometimes during these trips, we meet people who change our lives, while other times we meet people who make a lasting memory. Such was the case a few years back when I wrote about Brian taking me to the spa in San Antonio and how they gave him grapes while leaving me to fend for myself – on my birthday! Or, the time in Paris when B and I were in a little restaurant in the Champs and our waiter who truthfully looked just like Bozo the Clown kept bringing us stuff to eat, and every time I would say “thank you,” he would bellow out, “You’re Welcome.” Characters who stay with you. You get what I mean. This last trip we spent time at the spa, and I met Rogelio Garcia. Now upon our first encounter, Rogelio was responsible for doing a body scrub. I figured I would try it since so many clients raved about the benefits and how soft their skin was after. I stepped into a little room with a shower, and Rogelio told me to put on the paper panties and bra. When I was on the table, he came in and turned on the shower and steam began to fill up the tiny space. He placed a towel over my eyes, leaned in, tapped me on my forehead, and said in a very excited voice, “Alisa, (pronounced ALIZA) this is your moments!” At that instant, I felt like I might have made a mistake with my spa choice

and a little like Cindy Lou Who when the Grinch leans forward after she asks him why he’s taking all the presents, and he pats her on the head! The scrub was fine, and I would recommend it, but what was weird happened when he was finished. He put me in the shower and began washing all of the gunk off me, and I could not see him through the steam. Now, I don’t know how this would make you feel but being in a small shower filled with steam, pretty much naked and covered in goo with a strange man washing you where you cannot see his next move… Not relaxing in the slightest! Flash forward three days and I find myself back at the spa because really there’s nothing else to “do.” This time I signed up for a deep tissue massage. As I walked into the spa, I heard a very high-pitched squeal. “Aliza! Aliza! It is you!” I looked at Rogelio and said, “Yes,

80

actually it is me.” What else could I say? I knew by his enthusiasm that he was my massage therapist. We went to the same little room, and I got on the table. I told Rogelio, “Now listen, you do know what I signed up for, right?” And I stated that with the flow and form of as if I were actually saying, “Because this is expensive, and I hate nothing more than having my expectations crushed.” He said, “Oh yes Aliza. I love the deep tissue one!” So, we proceeded. At some point, Rogelio decided that I needed to be pulled straight up off of the table while face down and while doing this, he stated, “Now Aliza! I must stretch you!” Truthfully, I did not even see it coming, so I found myself completely naked pulled the opposite direction into a “C” without warning. Despite that, this was not bad, not bad at all. And I actually remember saying to myself after it was over, why not? This guy and I had already had a shower together this week, so what was the big deal anyway? After he finished, he leaned into me and said, “Aliza! I hope you enjoyed your moments!” He certainly made sure that I would never forget him. This next year is almost here, and it is easy breezy to go work through another one. I want you though to take a break even if it’s for an hour, and from me to you, learn the lesson that Rogelio so memorably taught me this summer to “Enjoy your moments!” Cheers to 2016 and wishes for a year filled with such times! Take Care of YOU!

Count on us when minutes Count In a cardiac emergency, a fast, comprehensive response can be the difference between life and death. That’s why our Heart & Vascular Center offers the most advanced cardiac care program in the area. In fact, we’re the only hospital in the Fort Bend area to provide 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week interventional cardiology and cardiac surgery services. Also, because we consistently exceed national standards in the most critical components of cardiac care, we’re a nationally accredited chest pain center. In a cardiac emergency, there’s only one place you need to be — Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. That’s the difference between practicing medicine and leading it.
