The Houston Area Urban Forestry Council (HAUFC) recently awarded the Sugar Land Parks and Recreation Department a 2019 “Project of the Year” award for the Right Tree, Right Place volunteer tree planting event.

Sugar Land won the same award in 2018 for its Trees Across America tree volunteer planting event. Assistant Director of the Parks and Recreation William Hajdik accepted the award on January 14th during HAUFC’s annual meeting and awards ceremony. The awards recognize individuals or groups in the greater Houston area who have gone above and beyond in the field of arboriculture and urban forestry.

The Right Tree, Right Place planting began in 2015 and is the result of a partnership between the city and CenterPoint

Energy. The 2019 tree planting took place on March 14th at Brazos River Park, where a variety of 30- and 15-gallon gallon trees donated by CenterPoint Energy were planted. A total of 30 trees were planted by more than 40 volunteers from Sugar Land, Missouri City and CenterPoint.

“Trees are a vital part of our lives, and they provide so much more than landscaping,” said Hajdik. “They clean the air, reduce erosion, add to property values and so much more. We are proud to organize and host these tree plantings for the betterment of our community.

A total of 100 trees have been added to the Sugar Land parks system’s tree inventory through the annual events.

Libraries Present Rosa Parks Re-Enactor

On December 1st, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat in the colored section of the bus for a white passenger after the white section was filled. Parks’ act of defiance, which led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott, became an important symbol of the modern Civil Rights Movement. Fort Bend County Libraries will present theatrical accounts of Parks’ historical bus ride at two locations in March. The program “Sister Rosa Parks, the Bus Stops Here” will showcase actress/storyteller Jean Donatto as Rosa Parks. The schedule of performances is as follows:

• University Branch Library – Monday, March 9th, 2:30 pm • First Colony Branch Library – Tuesday, March 10th, 3 pm As Rosa Parks, Donatto will describe the “incident” on the bus that aroused people of all races to begin the struggle for fair and equal treatment. She will also describe the social climate before, during and after the event.

Donatto is an accomplished actress, storyteller, playwright, director, radio personality, teacher and mentor who performs with Young Audiences of Houston. Trained by the American Conservatory Theater, Donatto also frequently performs with Houston’s Ensemble Theater, Stages Repertory Theatre, and The Presidio in San Francisco. These re-enactments are made possible by a grant from Young Audiences of Houston. The program is recommended for school-aged youth and adults.

The performances are free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.fortbend.lib.tx.us or call 281-633-4734. Jean Donatto. Photo by Young Audiences of Houston.

2020 Bucket List: Next up – Rome 2020 Bucket List: Next up – Rome

Some of the most popular tourist destination in Rome, Italy.

Perhaps there is no other place like Rome. The history, the architecture, the food . . . . ahhh! It is a rare opportunity to actually find in one place the richness of culture that Rome has to offer. This makes Rome both a desirable place to visit but an intimidating one as well.

Things to know before traveling to Rome are worth a study in order to not be rushed or frustrated and then realize that you have missed some main attractions that are a must see. Rome presents a different set of criteria for travelers, because there is so much to take in. I recommend basing the itinerary on the amount of days you can stay and let that be your initial guide.

It is ideal to plan for at least ten days to two weeks to really have the time to absorb this destination, and the month of August should be avoided as many attractions close early or are simply closed, museums in particular. The convenience of staying within the parameters East of Timber and West of the train station will insure that you are in the thick of things, so to speak. It is worth paying extra for a car from the airport directly to the hotel to avoid the hassle with luggage and general wait times. Hotels should be considered near Spagna Square and along the half mile stretch between Piazza Navona and Piazza Barborini. As many as 70% of Rome attractions are located in that zone of the city.

Many hotels offer along with their accommodations breakfast daily, which is recommended as the cost of everything

Piazza di Spagna, at the bottom of the Spanish Steps, is one of the most famous squares in Rome, Italy. is elevated in Rome, and the expense of food while traveling can be one of the largest expenses. The Marcella Royal Hotel is close to the Termini Railway Station, and it offers contemporary rooms and suites. It is considered a boutique hotel, offering a rooftop cocktail bar and lovely 360 degree views of Rome.

Another wonderful hotel option is the Palazzo Naiadi. Located in Rome’s city center, it is a short walk to many main attractions. Palazzo Naiadi offers luxurious suites complete with marble bathrooms, pools and spa, as well as a rooftop bar and terrace.

The Palazzo Naiadi, a luxury hotel in Rome.

Important sights not to be missed are the Roman Ruins, which can easily take an entire day. It is recommended to pre-book a guided tour so that each attraction is covered. Of course, travelers will want to take in The Vatican and Basilica, and again, pre-booking a tour is advised. There is a high tea offered at The Vatican that can be arranged through a travel consultant. Museums are everywhere, and the best way to take these in is by purchasing Roma Pass, available at the museums that allow guests entrance in and out of most of them. The Spanish Steps, Via Nazionale and Barberini are all close by and worthy of grabbing a gelato or panini and wandering around just absorbing the ambiance.

However long you plan to stay in Rome, add a few more days, and try to stay longer. It is a beautiful place that is meant to be savored and taken in slowly. Save attractions close to your hotel for last, so if you find yourself short on time, you can roam around easily and catch everything that Rome has to offer.
