Creating a Private Wildlife Sanctuary

Listen to the sound of the songbirds and see the butterflies sipping nectar from wildflowers. Hear the splash of a cardinal bathing in your birdbath and see your children learning more about God’s creatures. This could be your backyard!

It doesn’t matter what part of Fort Bend County you live in or how much space you have, you can create a habitat for wildlife and even get it certified as an official Backyard Wildlife Habitat site with the National Wildlife Federation (NWF). According to the National Wildlife Federation, there are few key things needed to create a wildlife sanctuary in your yard: food, water, cover and a safe place to raise young. Food sources include seeds from a plant, berries, nectar, foliage, twigs, nuts, fruits, pollen, suet, bird feeders, squirrel feeders, hummingbird feeders and butterfly feeders. Water sources include a small birdbath, a pond or a trickling water feature. Small wildlife like a place where they can feel safe. Having bushes or short shrubs where they can feel protected from humans, predators and inclement weather is a must. Now is a great time to get a plan for creating a habitat for birds, butterflies and other amazing small creatures that visit the area.

Once you have installed these elements into your yard and created a healthy and sustainable wildlife habitat, enroll in the NWF’s Certified Wildlife Habitat™ program at www.nwf.org/Garden-For-Wildlife/Create.aspx.

Garden Guy would love to help you create and install the elements for an amazing backyard wildlife habitat! For more information, call 281-208-4400 or visit www.garden-guy.com.

What an Unforgettable Year This Has Been!

Arlene Rolsen, CRS, has been helping buyers and sellers realize their dreams for over 42 years and believes that this last year has by far been the most unpredictable in her career. “Homeownership is an investment in your future, and it is how many American families begin to accumulate wealth. Despite the recent downturn, homeownership still matters to many,” Rolsen said.

Rolsen loves introducing families from all over the world to Fort Bend County where they can find great schools, places to worship, shopping, medical care, parks, recreation and diversity. All have helped make her role such an enjoyable one. “We have truly been blessed with a market far different from any other place in the world.” The future continues to look bright for the area as more people continue to discover Fort Bend as such a wonderful place to call home.

Rolsen always remembers one of her sellers’ remarks: “I have given a lot of thought about my house sale, and I have decided that the house is secondary in the process. The buyer is actually buying the hope of a bright, happy future. As for the sellers, we are actually selling a place where memories were made.” This explains why Rolsen has loved and enjoyed her years of helping buyers and sellers realize their hopes and memories.

Quality Shower Doors and Mirror Services

Shower Doors and More opened their doors more than six years ago in Stafford by a husband and wife team, Ashley Boyd and Raul Guel. The local family-owned and operated company has provided elegant, custom-cut shower doors and bath enclosure solutions to homeowners and home builders throughout Fort Bend and surrounding areas. Shower Doors and More provides several design ideas no matter your home’s style. Their main focus is to deliver the very best to each and every customer.

Shower Doors and More has a variety of options available when it comes to shower doors from custom frameless shower doors to semi frameless to framed. Custom tub enclosures, shower door installations and shower door replacements can all be provided.

Perfectly complimenting a bath or other living space with the right mirror can be a fruitless task if you stick to the store bought, pre-cut options. Usually simple in nature and simply not sized right, a regular mirror can leave your home feeling sparse. Shower Doors and More can help you choose a quality custom mirror.

Shower Doors and More’s expertise will offer not only shower door repair or replacement, full shower overhauls, mirrors installed, glass tabletops, as well as window glass replacements. Basically, they can do anything for your glass needs.

Contact Shower Doors and More for a free no-obligation consultation at your home today at 832-617-8195 or at showerdoorsandmore1@gmail.com. Visit at www.showerdoorsnmore.com.

Get in the Heart of Your Community

One of the most valued benefits of life is being part of a community. Helen Keller once said, “Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much.”

Back in the day, neighbors gathered at the fence or on the front porch and shared baked goods or swapped ideas for issues at hand. Neighbors gave helping hands to neighbors in need. Unfortunately over the years, the personal interaction between neighbors has declined with technology.

Get in the Heart of Your Community Continued

While raising her family in Fort Bend County, Kristin Lytle has been involved with various organizations in an effort to give back to her community. Lytle served on boards at schools, volunteered through Friends of Old Sugar Land, Fort Bend Senior Citizens, Hearts and Hammers, Scouts, Sugar Land Planning and Zoning and other organizations and continues to do so.

Sometimes residents do not where to even start to serve their community. If you would like to volunteer, consider starting with your neighborhood. Often times you will learn there are many who need help. Attend an HOA meeting or social event and likely learn of neighbors needing assistance. Think about the work you would like to do, the talents you have to offer and you will enjoy giving back.

Fort Bend County has a wide range of organizations that need volunteers: visit a local food pantry, animal shelter, library, senior center, schools and/or hospital. “You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give,” Winston Churchill said.

Ideas to Improve Curb Appeal Ideas to Improve Curb Appeal

Whether you’re hoping to sell in the near future or simply looking to touch up outdated areas, there’s one aspect of home maintenance most homeowners agree is important: curb appeal. It’s a broad term that may reference any number of visible features, meaning there are plenty of ways to enhance the appearance of your house.

Consider these ideas - some big, some small - for bringing new life to your home’s look from the experts at the National Association of the Remodeling Industry.

Swap Out Your Front Door

As one of the first things a guest, passerby or potential homebuyer may notice, the front door is the gateway to your home and a likely opening impression. Upgrading to a heavier, bolder door or simply repainting the existing threshold can capture positive attention. Alternately, swapping out hardware for a more eye-catching look is an easy way to achieve a fresh facelift.

Create Seating Areas

A welcoming home is typically an attractive one, and there are few better ways to create a cozy vibe than a seating or gathering area on the porch. Whether it’s the classic porch swing or chairs and a coffee table suitable for the outdoors, a small zone ideal for conversation and camaraderie can help create an athome appearance.

Rethink the Mailbox

It may not be as exciting of a project to undertake, however, giving your mailbox a fresh look helps it stand out and - especially if it’s directly in front of your home - may turn an ordinary object into a worthy attractant. Your work may be as simple as updating to a newer model or as thought-out as constructing a small rock wall around the base.

Add Stonework

For a project that can give your house a new look altogether, consider incorporating stonework or a stone veneer for a natural appearance. If changing your facade isn’t in the plans, less complicated ideas like pavers, brick sidewalks and landscape rings are ways to introduce a classic touch.

Paint (or Repaint) the Exterior

Changing the exterior paint color of a home is one of the most popular renovation projects, and one of the first that comes to mind for many homeowners. Simply altering the colors of trim, gutters and other accent pieces may be enough for some homes, and repainting the exterior doesn’t have to mean a new color altogether - consider a brighter shade or simply a fresh coat to help your home pop.

Update Lighting

Plant Shrubbery

Billowing trees and blooming flowers are certainly eyecatching accessories outside a home, but many varieties require intense care to grow the way you envision and may adhere to seasonal weather patterns for optimal appearance. For a quicker result, shop around for fully mature shrubs and plants that can withstand elements throughout the year.

Light fixtures come in all shapes and sizes, and many times the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. While updated porch illumination may not drive home a potential sale, it’s a subtle touch right as guests arrive. Adding smaller lights in previously unlit areas like around landscaping (consider solar-powered for easier maintenance) can help your hard work shine.

pring Trends of 2020

Are you ready to update your home this Spring? Here are some trends for this year. Vintage Accents Mixing the old with the new is one of our favorite ways to design, creating a layered look. For 2020 we are seeing a lot more vintage and traditional detailing, such as spindles and spooled legs. Adding in one or two vintage pieces really can make a statement. Navy Blue Sherwin Williams has announced Navel as the color of the year for 2020, and the color of the year for Pantone is Classic Blue. Blue is such a versatile color and can be used in modern and traditional homes. on-White Kitchens White kitchens have been a trend for a while now, but for 2020 we are seeing a shift into more cream, and natural wood cabinets. This still creates that light and airy vibe, but without committing to an all-white look.

Wicker/ attan We have been seeing a real resurgence of wicker and rattan, beyond just for your patio. We love the natural color that goes beautifully with most décor and adds great texture to a space.

Avoid Asthma Triggers

For asthma sufferers, being caught off guard by an asthma attack can be very scary when the airways become narrowed or inflamed, leading to wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath or other symptoms.

Every case of asthma is different, and knowing what triggers your asthma can help you control it, but you may need to do a bit of detective work to understand all of the factors that trigger your asthma.

Symptoms may not always appear directly after exposure and different factors (e.g., pollen, mold, exercise, smoke) can cause a variety of reactions.

Raziuddin Ahmed, M.D., pulmonologist at Houston Methodist Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine Specialists in Sugar Land, shared the following steps you can take to better understand and manage your asthma for easier breathing.

• Keep an asthma journal. “When you have an asthma episode, take notice of your surroundings and write down potential triggers, such as being close to a pet, stirring up dust while cleaning or exercising outside,” Ahmed said.

• Avoid asthma triggers. Identifying your asthma triggers can help you avoid them. For example, if you know your asthma is triggered by air pollution, watch the weather for air quality updates and stay indoors if possible when air pollution levels are high.

• Use your inhaler properly. “Ask your doctor or nurse to watch your technique to make sure you are receiving the full benefits of your medication,” Ahmed said. “Also, always adhere to the recommended dosage.” Raziuddin Ahmed, M.D., pulmonologist.

• Recognize warning signs. An asthma episode may come at any time and could develop into a life-threatening situation within a matter of seconds. Ask your doctor what the right steps should be in such an emergency.

• Make an asthma action plan. Create your own asthma action plan with your doctor.

If you or someone you know has asthma, talk to a doctor about ways to manage it safely so you can enjoy an active lifestyle.

Common Asthma Triggers • Allergens, such as pollen, animal dander, dust mites and mold • Weather conditions, such as dry air, high winds, cold temperatures or sudden changes in weather patterns • Pollution, such as strong fumes from paint or other chemicals, smoke, smog and even perfume • Tobacco smoke • Exercise • Anxiety or stress • Laughing or crying • Medications, such as aspirin and ibuprofen • Viral and bacterial infections, such as the common cold and sinusitis • Acid reflux (with or without heartburn)

Houston Methodist Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine Specialists in Sugar Land offers comprehensive asthma services to evaluate and manage the condition using the most advanced treatment options. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Ahmed, call 281.325.0005. For the latest news, events and information, visit houstonmethodist.org/sugarland or our Facebook page at fb.com/methodistsugarland.

Free Digestive Health Issues Seminar at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital

Gastrointestinal (GI) problems often strike when you least expect it — and at the worst possible time. You might have a gas attack at the movies, indigestion at a dinner party or diarrhea while on vacation.

“Occasional gastrointestinal upset is normal,” said Sreelatha Reddy, M.D., board-certified gastroenterologist at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “However, if gastrointestinal distress becomes an everyday concern, or you experience a sudden increase in symptoms, there could be something more going on.”

What’s ausing our ymptoms? If you’re struggling with unexplained symptoms, your doctor may recommend seeing a gastroenterologist, a specialist who treats disorders affecting the esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas and gallbladder.

Gi Disorders Can Be Classified Into Two Main Groups: Functional GI disorders occur when the GI tract isn’t functioning as it should. When there’s a functional problem, the GI tract typically looks normal and diagnostic tests show normal results, making it harder to pinpoint the cause of persistent and recurrent symptoms. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and chronic constipation are examples of functional disorders. Treatments may include lifestyle changes, medication and other therapies to keep the digestive system in balance.

Structural GI disorders happen when there’s a structural Sreelatha Reddy, M.D.

problem in the bowel that needs to be repaired or healed. This includes conditions, such as anal fissures, hemorrhoids, colitis, diverticular disease and colon polyps. Improving bowel habits can help with symptoms, but surgery may be needed in some cases.

“Gastrointestinal issues can be difficult to diagnose and treat,” said Reddy, “so it’s important to listen to your body, and discuss symptoms with your doctor.” If you experience any of the following symptoms, it may be time to see your doctor or a gastroenterologist, abdominal pain or bloating, changes in bowel habits, diarrhea, difficulty controlling bowel movement urges, difficulty swallowing, excessive gas or belching, heartburn, loss of appetite, rectal bleeding, unexplained weight loss or vomiting

Abdominal pain can mean any number of things — from constipation to more serious conditions like appendicitis or diverticulitis. Call your doctor right away when abdominal pain is severe, getting worse or recurring, or accompanied by dizziness, high fever or shortness of breath.

Trust Your Gut — And Talk To Your Doctor You know your digestive system better than anyone, and you may have the best insight (or at least a gut feeling) about what’s going on. Use this knowledge to your advantage by keeping a journal of your digestive episodes. Record the time of day and frequency of symptoms, such as frequent or loose bowel movements, constipation, cramps or heartburn. Also note any food or other triggers that might be related.

At your appointment, a gastroenterologist will review your symptoms, ask about your health history and perform a complete exam. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, blood tests, X-rays, ultrasound exams and GI endoscopic procedures may be ordered to diagnose your issue. “Don’t wait until it’s unbearable to get help,” Reddy urged. “If your quality of life is suffering, talk to your doctor.”

Digestive Health Seminar March 19th

Get the facts about GI health at our digestive health seminar led by Dr. Sreelatha Reddy, who will discuss recommended screenings and signs and symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders and how your gut health and the microbiome (bacteria, fungi and other microbes) affect your whole body.

The seminar is scheduled for Thursday, March 19th at 6 p.m. in the Brazos Pavilion Conference Center at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. Registration is required. To register visit events.houstonmethodist.org/ digestive-sl or call 281.274.7500.

2020 Subaru Outback

The 2020 Subaru Outback is all-new for this model year, and now it’s bigger, safer and more capable than before. This sixth-generation Outback SUV now comes standard with All-Wheel Drive and Subaru’s award-winning EyeSight Driver Assist Technology. Built on a new platform, this Outback was redesigned from the ground up to be quieter with a more powerful powertrain. But, it’s still tough enough to survive in any climate you might find in Texas.

A couple of decades ago, Subaru vehicles were considered odd and offbeat, not cars you might see in most garages. But, their reputation for toughness and reliability began to filter out, and Subaru sales began to rise. The automaker also realigned their car designs to fit into the mainstream and suddenly Subaru sedans, and SUVs caught on with the car buying public. Subaru continues to hit sales records as other automakers slump.

The base Outback has an MSRP of $26,645, and it is powered by a 182 hp, 2.5 liter four-cylinder Boxer engine that gets EPA estimated fuel economy numbers of 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. The unique design of the boxer engine allows it to be more compact and to sit low in the engine bay giving the Outback a low center of gravity and more stability on the road. It’s clattering sound can be off-putting to some car buyers.

The higher trim Outbacks are available with a 260 hp, 2.4 liter turbocharged four-cylinder Boxer engine that delivers fuel economy ratings of 23 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. All 2020 Outback models are paired with a Lineartronic CVT featuring an 8-speed manual mode function with steering wheel paddle shifters.

The exterior is a rugged and functional design, and according to the Outback’s press release, one that “inspires wanderlust and enables active lifestyles.” Cladding (decor) on the side of the Outback is meant to resemble a hiking boot. Wider fenders, a large hexagonal grille, front cladding and LED fog lights on the corners are there to further emphasize the SUV’s capability.

The Subaru Outback’s upscale interior features the Starlink In-Vehicle Technology which offers an integrated cockpit experience by allowing the driver to control entertainment and vehicle settings through a large touchscreen display. The infotainment screen is an all-new tablet-style 11.6-inch Full HD multimedia display that’s just one of the many new features sure to impress any new car buyer.
