ublisher’s Preview www.fortbendfocus.com
Dear Fort Bend Friends, Happy New Year and Hello 2011!! What an exciting time of year – a time of new beginnings and rejuvenation. Each January, we love to bring you a special issue celebrating just that – new beginnings and rejuvenation. With our special Real Weddings, we celebrate couples embarking on new adventures in their lives, we take a peek at the details of their special day, and most importantly, we rejoice with them. The New Year also brings a New You, and Fort Bend Focus has several spas, doctors, and wellness centers to help you renew and regroup for the New Year. The little ones in your life have new adventures to look forward to as well, and with our Private Schools and Learning Centers advertising section, we help you take a look at the many options available in caring for – and educating – your children. Many of these schools and learning center facilities are hosting open houses this month so you and your family can preview what they have to offer. Now, I must reflect back on all the galas, the holidays, and the football season. We attended many galas and special events, and have published our ever popular Seen on the Scenes for you to enjoy. I was able to attend the 15th anniversary of the Ballet Forte Nutcracker performance and let me tell you, it was exceptional. The talent we have right here in Fort Bend County is truly amazing, and I encourage you to support the Ballet Forte throughout the year.

READERS FEEDBACK Lisa, You hit it right on the money choosing Mike Flory as Focus Magazine’s Man of the Year. He is such a giving individual. On a personal note, he singlehandedly helped keep “Santa” alive in my household years ago. He personally came to my house when my then little boy, Jamie, questioned if there was really a Santa. What an impression that made to Jamie. Thanks to Mike, Jamie believed in Santa a while longer which brought tears to my eyes. In Mike Flory, Fort Bend has real treasure. Happy Holidays – Feliz Navidad, Minerva Perez Lisa, We were thrilled to open the recent Fort Bend Focus and see our upcoming event publicized. Our grant recipients are so touched when they are awarded a grant and it starts with the publicity of the event. THANK YOU, THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! Judi Marchand

Lisa, I’ve been out of town so am just now able to let you know how much I enjoyed the JEWELS luncheon last week. Joy Dowell did a fantastic job in coordinating the fashion show. The models had so much fun! The food was delicious too! Thank you for hosting this event for the community. Celia Olson Dear Patti, Working with you on the “JEWELS of Fort Bend” event was such a wonderful experience. You were always so pleasant, always smiling, and so helpful, as well as having a great personality. I received so many compliments on the article in Focus Magazine, for which you get all the credit. You certainly have a way with words. Thank you so much. Fondly, Carolyn Banfield

Ulises Baltazar is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Board Certified Vascular Surgeon, Registered Vascular Technologist, Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation.
Sugar Land Vein Specialists The practice is dedicated exclusively to the treatment of venous insufficiency that can cause painful visible varicose veins, leg swelling and even venous stasis ulcers. We are the vein clinic of choice in Fort Bend County. We dedicate 30 to 45 minutes during the first visit, which includes a detailed interview, physical examination and an ultrasound. Our goal is to make every patient feel comfortable and safe, allowing plenty of time for questions. When compared to large practices with multiple physicians, there is no need to reintroduce yourself to the doctor on call as you will always be taken care of by the same physician.

Music Magic Spring class having fun.
The Fort Bend Boys Choir of Texas’ Music Magic Strikes a Chord with 6 and 7 Year Old Boys Six and seven year olds can take a magical journey through music! Music Magic, an enrichment program, is for six and seven year old boys who like music and singing and want to learn more! The eight-week program brings music alive for the boys through the use of movement, singing, musical games, and other childcentered activities. Boys develop better large muscle coordination, pitch matching, increased focus, rhythm awareness and musicianship. Because this class is so much fun for the boys, they will learn quite a bit and make new friends as well! Music Magic will continue its 14th season on Tuesday evenings at the First United Methodist Church of Missouri City, 3900 Lexington Blvd., Missouri City, from 6:30 p.m. – 7:15 p.m. beginning January 18th and ending March 8th. The cost for the course is only $80.00 and no auditions are required for this class. Boys will receive a free Music Magic T-shirt after classes start. Classes are limited in size, so please call the choir office at (281) 2403800 to pre-register or www.fbbctx.org. Headliners continued on page 23

Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Free Flu Shots and Community Toy Drive a Success Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, in collaboration with Sugar Land Exchange Club, Sugar Land Rotary and the Fort Bend Exchange Club, provided free flu shots to community members who participated in Santa’s Gift Exchange. Fort Bend residents graciously brought new, unwrapped toys or clothing items to Methodist Sugar Land Hospital in exchange for a flu shot. The toys and clothing will benefit local children in the Fort Bend area during this holiday season. Organizers of Santa’s Gift Exchange 2010 are anticipating an increase of qualifying families due to recent economic downturns. Santa’s Gift Exchange will provide toys and clothing to more than 3,500 economically disadvantaged children in Fort Bend County. “A special thank you to the 300 plus people who attended the free flu shot and Santa’s Exchange event, as more children will now get the present they deserve,” said Kaelyn Stolhand, Marketing Coordinator at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. For more information on Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, visit www. MethodistSugarLand.com or call 281-2747500 for a physician referral.

Provided by RBC Wealth Management and the Hardee Investment Group
A New Year, A New Financial You
W
ho doesn’t like a fresh start of a new year? A clean slate and an optimistic outlook make January 1st a magical time. It seems every year we vow to take care of our finances, only to be sidetracked with excuses. And before we know it, the year is ending and we’re making resolutions…again. This year, The Hardee Investment Group wants you to take control of your finances. We’ve listed a few simple, but smart, money moves for finding your financial stability in 2011. First, review the previous year. ‘Tis the season for reflections, so take a look at your 2010 budget. Identify both good and bad money moves you made. Celebrate the good money moves and resolve to take the necessary steps to improve your finances. You’ll only benefit in the future. Second, set one financial goal. Each year, we find ourselves saying we’ll contribute more towards our
retirement plan, pay off debt, or save more from each paycheck. If you think about it, those three goals together are daunting and probably leave you with too much at the end of the month. So, choose just one and focus your energy on that one goal this year. Odds are you can accomplish that single goal fairly easily and without much added effort. You’d be amazed at what you can do. Third, make a plan. Written plans are much easier to follow than lists created in your head. A written plan allows you to see your goals. If it helps, write the steps you need to take to reach each one. It might sound silly, but you’ll feel much more accomplished when you can celebrate your “mini-goals”. It’s just one more step closer to the big prize-achieving your financial dreams. Our fourth and final suggestion is to visit with the members of the Hardee Investment Group. We can review your portfolio to maximize
you returns, save for future college tuition and retirement, and assist you with your estate planning. We’d be happy to offer you a second opinion on your portfolio. Our group invites you to visit our website at www.HardeeInvestmentGroup. com and listen every Thursday from 11:15 am until 11:30 am on Talk 650 am to familiarize yourself with our financial family. We’d love to hear from you, our readers! The bottom line is there are many goals out there-finances, health, family, or travel. Without a plan, your goals will only be dreams. Thyroid Disease – Can Gluten and Vitamin Deficiency Be to Blame? Thyroid Disease and Dysfunction Classic signs of thyroid hormone deficiency include fatigue, memory loss, cold hands and feet, muscle and joint pain, depression, high cholesterol, and constipation. Over the past several years, I have seen a large influx of patients that had been placed on thyroid hormones to treat the above symptoms. The problem with this approach is that it doesn’t actually address why the body is not making enough thyroid hormone in the first place. What you should know about Thyroid Hormone Production: Thyroid hormone production is under the influence of a chemical called thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). TSH is made by the pituitary gland. When circulating levels of thyroxine (T-4) are low, TSH sends a message to your thyroid gland to start producing more T-4. The building blocks your body uses to make T-4 come from food constituents that we obtain from the diet (tyrosine – an amino acid from protein and certain minerals – iodine, zinc, etc). Once your body makes T-4, it must be activated by other nutrients (vitamins and minerals) into something known as T-31. T-3 is the active form of thyroid hormone that works to increase the body’s metabolism. However, certain nutrient deficiencies and stress can lead to a reduction in T-3 and instead the production of Reverse T-3. This form of T-3 is not as effective and leads to symptoms of hypothyroidism. Unfortunately, Reverse T-3 is cannot be distinguished from T-3 in traditional thyroid lab reports and this is a common oversight by many
physicians. Once T-3 is made it will attach to the nucleus inside your cells and increase the body’s metabolism appropriately. Once again, however, certain nutrient deficiencies can decrease the responsiveness of our body’s cells to T-3, causing symptoms of hypothyroidism. For these reasons lab reports commonly performed by physicians that look at TSH, T-4, and T-3, can be misleading. A simplified diagram of thyroid hormone production is listed below: TSH Stimulates the thyroid gland to make T-4 T-4 Converts to either T-3 or Reverse T-3 (RT3) RT3 is inactive. Normal T-3 attaches to the cell nucleus Once attachment of T-3 occurs the body’s metabolism increases Gluten Sensitivity and Thyroid Dysfunction Gluten sensitivity is a common cause of thyroid dysfunction. Gluten exposure can trigger an autoimmune reaction (Hashimoto’s disease) that disrupts normal thyroid hormone production. (For more on this visit www.GlutenFreeSociety.org) and visit the Glutenology tab. There are also many other environmental factors that can effect thyroid hormone production. Oral contraceptives and estrogen containing medications have been shown to reduce the conversion of T4 to T33. Many herbicides and pesticides contain estrogen mimicking compounds known to effect thyroid hormone production. Soy foods and sodas can cause a reduction in thyroid hormone. Certain food allergies and sele-
nium deficiency are linked to autoimmune thyroid dysfunction3,4. Heavy metal exposure through air, water, dental fillings etc. have been linked to poor thyroid function. Remember that thyroid disease is never just as simple as taking a medication whether it is bio-identical or not. Thyroid dysfunction has a cause. An astute physician will take an active roll in care and seek to perform a comprehensive exam and laboratory work up that will identify the cause. Keep in mind that your body has the ability to make its own thyroid hormone providing that all the essential nutrients necessary are present in the diet or through supplementation, providing that the environment is conducive to the expression of good health, and providing that the individual is properly educated in the care of his/her body. Many patients that come to me initially are taking some form of thyroid medication. Many were instructed that the medication was a life long necessity. And in many it is very common that the medication becomes unnecessary. Moncayo R, et al. Riverstone Donates More Than $12,000 to Two Fort Bend Charities Just in time for the holidays, Riverstone donated more than $12,000 to two Fort Bend organizations, the proceeds from acclaimed artist Tracy Lee Stum’s 3-D art installation in the community. Thousands toured the work, which Stum created in a multi-million-dollar estate home by Sterling Classic Homes in Riverstone during October. Thanks to the success of the event, Riverstone gave a check for $7,580 to Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels and a second check for $5,055 to the Fort Bend Junior Service League. Stum took several days to complete the artwork in Riverstone, which remained on display through mid-October. As part of the event, Riverstone hosted “Artful Living with Neiman Marcus,” a sold-out gathering that mixed fashion by the venerable retailer and art by Stum and Bennie Flores Ansell, who uses images of high heels hand-cut from transparency film to create fantastic “butterfly” installations. A release of live butterflies celebrated the artwork and added a touch of wonder to the evening. Tracy Lee Stum, the Guinness World Record holder for the largest street painting by an individual, has created 3-D images around the world. Her visit to Riverstone was part of The Grand Soiree, a collection of stylish events. For information and photos from the event, see www. riverstone.com and www.facebook.com/ RiverstoneCommunity.

empner High School student Taylor Love has been swimming competitively since she was a little girl. Now in her senior year, Taylor is looking forward to her last season. “I’ve actually been swimming since I was six years old on a neighborhood team. I decided to try it out and fell in love with it,” Taylor said. “I love the swim team at the Kempner. I’ve put my four years in with my team. We’re like a family.” For Taylor, the camaraderie she has formed with her teammates and coaches is a large part of what makes swimming one of her favorite school activities. “My coaches are absolutely amazing. No matter how hard practice gets, we all end up smiling and laughing,” Taylor shared. “Our team spends so much time together. Unlike other sports, swim meets are on Saturday, and they are all day events. Because
we’re always together, we’re forced to like each other, but we end up loving each other.” In addition to the relationships she has formed through swimming, Taylor has racked up many honors and accolades with her team including a big win last season, which she says is one of her proudest moments in high school. “Last year at district finals, we had to get second place in the 400-meter freestyle relay to beat out another high school to get second place at the meet,” she said. “We went out there, and we all dropped time. It was exciting to know that we had that much pressure on us, and we made it happen.” Though much of Taylor’s high school career does center around swimming, Taylor does spend time outside of pool as well. She’s a member of National Honor Society and the mayor’s youth council. Through her involvement with Peer Assisted Leadership (PALS), Taylor also gives back to the Sugar Land community and loves the feeling helping out gives her. “In PALS, we’re told to forget what’s going on in our personal life,” Taylor said. “It’s so easy to forget your problems because the kids get so excited to see you. It’s such a good feeling to know you are wanted and that you can help someone that much.”
When asked how she balances all of her activities, a part-time job and her personal life, Taylor jokes by crediting “lack of sleep,” but quickly added that her coaches, boss and parents work with her to fit everything in. She went on to say, “When you truly want to do something, you find time to do it.” In her spare time, Taylor spends a lot of time with her family. “We’re a very active family. It’s not uncommon to find us across town at a football game or drag racing. We’re all over the place.” She’s also keeping up a family tradition by deciding to attend Texas Tech University next fall. “My uncle played football in the ’80s, so my family has always been Red Raider fans,” she said. “My first visit just felt like home.” Because of her love of sports, Taylor plans to major in sports and exercise sciences in hopes to have a career as a physical therapist. ★

Rejuvenation & Wellness Are you Suffering from Depression? Magnets may be your answer
Town Center Wellness Gluten Free Weight Loss
Did you know depression can now be treated with a magnet? With just a 37-minute treatment, individuals with depression can begin a road to recovery. Serenity Center For Depression, under the direction of Dr. Kimberly Cress, now offers an innovative and effective treatment for depression. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) was FDA approved for treatment of depression in October, 2008. TMS is a safe alternative for those who have not found relief from other anti-depressant therapies or have experienced side effects from these medications. TMS uses a magnet similar in strength to the one used in an MRI. It is placed on the left front portion of the head. The magnet provides a local current that changes the brain function in the area of the brain associated with depression. The pulsed magnetic field stimulates nerve cells within the area of the brain thought to control mood. When these nerve cells are activated they release chemicals (neurotransmitters) that are naturally found in the brain, ie. serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. These are the same chemicals provided by antidepressant medications, but with TMS there is not the risk of side effects seen in antidepressants. Individuals stop medication due to side effects such as sexual dysfunction, weight gain, and nausea compared to little to no side effects with TMS. Dramatic improvements have been seen as a result of TMS. After receiving TMS, Shellie stated, “It’s given me a life that I have dreamed of since I was twelve years of age.” Dr. Cress’s patients are experiencing a breakthrough with TMS and finally living a life of joy. TMS was ranked by CNN as one of the top ten health innovations of 2009. We at the Serenity Center are proud to be the first in our area to provide this alternative treatment for depression. The gluten free diet is being used by thousands as a weight loss aid. Unfortunately, many in the medical profession are falsely proclaiming that gluten free diets for weight loss are dangerous and can lead to nutrition deficits. The gluten free diet should not be perceived as the latest weight loss trend. The term trend implicates a transient phenomenon that will pass with the fickle notions of the media. A gluten free diet can be very helpful for weight loss. Think about it. If we want to fatten up cows, pigs, chickens, or other farm animals, what do we feed them? GRAIN. Look at the obesity trend in the U.S. It is most definitely on the rise. This increase parallels an increase in grain based foods in being used as staple foods in the U.S. Diet.
Rejuvenation & Wellness A New Year, A New You Texas Oculoplastic & Plastic Surgeons, PA
A common day of eating for most Americans is grain loaded: Breakfast – cereal (with milk from animals fed grain), bagels, toast, donuts, granola bars, etc. Lunch & Dinner – Sandwich, pizza, spaghetti or pasta, rolls, rice, & corn. Desert – Cake, cookies, ice cream (from cows fed grain based diets). Are you fat or overweight? Excessive grain causes obesity in animals and in humans. Excessive grain causes inflammation and contributes to a host of different chronic degenerative diseases. Do you fit these categories? If so, it is time to look at gluten as a potential culprit. All that being said, can a gluten free diet be used to lose weight? Absolutely! www.GlutenFreeSociety.org See ad on page 40.
New Years often prompts people to make all kinds of resolutions for selfimprovement. From weight loss to smoking cessation, exercising more to eating healthier, people make all kinds of promises to themselves which usually get forgotten by spring. A very common example is the number of gym memberships that are sold right after the New Year. However, the number of patrons using the gym typically dwindles significantly as Spring Break approaches. This year, instead of making yourself empty promises, why not give yourself the gift to improve something you always wanted to change about yourself? Maybe you want to reward yourself if you have already lost a lot of weight and need to remove stretched-out, excess skin. Or, you may have been born with excessively large breasts and exercise and diet may not be the solution for your chronic shoulder and back pain. Although eating healthily and exercising regularly are the staples of a healthy life for everyone, they alone cannot solve every problem. So before you join a gym and pay for a membership you may not use or begin yet another fad diet, why not see if plastic surgery may be the change for which you are looking this year. Then finally, you can make a resolution to improve something about yourself and actually do it! Julie Beth Yelin, MD www.topsdoc.com 281.232.6700

When we are healthy all our bodily systems and functions are harmoniously balanced and integrated with each other. In this state of balance, our defense mechanisms and our immune system can handle most of the threats that we are exposed to like disease causing organisms, toxins, physical or psychological stress. Unfortunately, we live in a society of imbalance where conventional medicine approaches healthcare by looking at our body in fragmented systems, not as an integrated whole system. This approach to our nation’s health has created a society that is sicker than at any other time in history. Integrative medicine (also known as complementary medicine or holistic medicine) treats patients from the most comprehensive perspective by addressing all of the multiple factors that play a role in health and disease: • Physical • Environmental • Mental/emotional • Social • Spiritual Such a “whole person” approach to healthcare is the opposite of symptomcare, the focus of conventional medicine. This approach has made a huge difference in the health of my family and many of my patients who for years suffered from • fatigue • hormonal imbalances • brain fog • insomnia • weight gain • arthritis • digestive disorders • ADD/ADHD • skin diseases • depression and anxiety • and more….. An integrative approach recognizes the importance of conventional medical practices and that the wisest form of health care is one which makes use of both to fully meet patient needs. If you or someone you know is suffering from any of the above and desires a more balanced approach to their health or is simply looking to maintain their health and longevity, schedule a wellness consultation with me by calling 281.491.1151. ODP will be the owner of an Atlantic League expansion team in Sugar Land. The $30 million stadium will be funded with a portion of sales tax revenues that may only be used for economic development purposes. No general fund tax dollars will be spent on the stadium. In addition to the stadium serving as a community amenity, a conservative cost-benefit analysis performed by Conventions, Sports & Leisure International conservatively estimates the project will provide an annual benefit of $7.7 million, or a return of $169 million over 30 years.

Meet Master Stylists and Colorists Christina Saenz and Tara Phillips at J’Adore Salon
Yes! You can and should have dentures that look natural, beautiful and fit comfortably. You should also be able to eat with your dentures! Dentures-That-Fit are functional dentures. This simply means the measurements (impressions) for these dentures are made with your mouth in motion. When you wear your dentures, you want to be able to eat, speak, smile, laugh, sing, and yes, kiss! Dentures-That-Fit is particularly unique because these motions are incorporated into your dentures as we fabricate them. The goal is for you to look good and sound natural wearing your dentures. • Do you like the way your denture fits your face? • Do you cover your mouth when smiling wearing your dentures? • Do you have some or all of your teeth missing or breaking down? • Are you currently wearing dentures that are uncomfortable? • Do your dentures hurt you when you eat? • Are the teeth on your dentures flat on the top? • Have you had or worn your dentures for many wears, and you think you need a new one? Find out if you are a candidate for Dentures-That-Fit. Dr Daniela Adeola, a Prosthodontist, specializes in making Dentures-That-Fit. As a special gift for our January 3rd grand opening, we are offering free consultation for the entire month. Two locations to serve you – Richmond/Sugar Land area and The Medical Center. Kids Can Make New Year’s Resolutions Too
F
or grade-school aged kids, making New Year’s resolutions can be an important first lesson in goal setting. While it’s never a good idea to insist that children adopt a resolution for the coming year, parents can provide both support and encouragement when kids show interest in doing so on their own or in response to resolution-making by a respected adult or parent. The key support that kids need is in formulating a resolution that is realistic, positive and achievable. For example, if your child declares that she will make 20 new friends during the year or secure a spot on the next season of American Idol, it’s definitely a good idea to step in and, while encouraging the thought behind the idea, help the child to scale back the resolution to something more manageable.
Timing is everything For younger children, help them choose a simple resolution that is part of daily life and within their developmental reach in the near future. For kids to feel successful, they need to experience success so it’s best to suggest a resolution that can be mastered prior to the end of an entire year. For example, young children who have recently learned to tie their own shoes can promise to make two attempts before asking a parent for help. This resolution is not only within reach, but the likelihood of mastery -- over a few short months -- is very high.
Though it’s a tradition many associate with adults, New Year’s resolutions can be made by kids as well.
Encourage and support While older children can certainly tackle more complex resolutions, their success hinges on motivation. Most older kids and teenagers are far more likely to hold to their resolutions if they feel they have a shot at success and if it’s something they truly want to do. New Year’s isn’t the time to extract big promises from children. Here again, it’s far better to scale back the resolution and allow kids to experience a sense of accomplishment. This doesn’t mean that the goal has to be easy. It just has to be within reach. For example, older kids and teens can resolve to eat an additional serving of fruit or vegetables every day or promise to do their regular chores without parental reminders. It’s important to remember that New Year’s is just one of many teachable moments throughout the year. H Source: metrocreativeconnection.com

Growing Kids with Character By Linda K. Eaves
P
rimrose School of First Colony utilizes a character development program in its curriculum called Posies and Pollywogs. Through discussion, arts and crafts, puppet play, games, and role-playing, children are encouraged to share thoughts on moral concepts and values such as honesty, compassion, respect and good judgment. Primrose School of First Colony focuses on community awareness through its Helping Hands program. Owners Tina and Matt Koenig take it a step further with their community support. “Our school is very focused on giving back to the community and teaching our students Aidan G. at East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry. at a young age the importance of caring and giving. Children learn the value of helping others by participating in community-minded class activities,” Tina said. Each month, students learn elder care and respect in the Adopt-A-Grandparent program at Colonial Oaks Retirement community. During Primrose School of First Colony’s Annual Can-A-Thon, students donate non-perishable items and then deliver them to East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry. Teachers also volunteer their time to serve at FBISD Elementary School Fundraisers such as Austin Parkway’s Walk-A-Thon. Spring Fling is an annual charity event that raises funds for local charities. “We have done carnivals, sock hops and more. Last year, we raised over $3,000 for The Houston Children’s Fund and the Fort Bend Women’s Center. Our students also run lemonade and popcorn stands to raise money at this event.” Primrose School of First Colony sponsors FBISD Elementary School Fundraisers by donating funds, free weeks of summer camp, and school supplies. “Last year, I helped with outclasses so teachers could have their holiday celebrations. I also volunteered at Dulles High School and Austin High School to do mock interviews for their students. Teachers enjoy getting snacks, stickers, pencils, pens, fun things to keep them motivated, so we have provided tool boxes filled with these goodies,” said Tina. “We sponsor First Colony Little League, Fun Fair Positive Soccer and other teams that our students may participate in. My husband, Matt, donates his time to drive our buses to shuttle parishioners/visitors to the Easter at the Creek Service,” Tina said. “Matt has organized tennis tournaments to raise funds for Breast Cancer awareness and Toys for Tots. We donate meals to area churches for families in need as well. In the past, I have volunteered for the Fort Bend Junior Service League (Riverstone CASA Home Tour, Charity Ball, Sugar Plum Market, etc.) and the Literacy Council of America.” In addition to supporting community organizations through volunteerism and fundraising, Primrose School of First Colony has a hand in providing educational opportunities for parents. “Baby Fest is our local training outreach for new and expecting parents held in August,” said Tina. “Service is in our heart. We believe that children are taught through example, and we work very hard to keep the children integrated into our charitable activities.” Visit Primrose School of First Colony during their Open House on Saturday, January 22nd from 10 Ms. Khan and Brandon at Primrose School of First a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, Colony’s recent event “Hayride, Hot Chocolate, Ho Ho Hos.” contact Primrose at 281.565.2707. Involved, Committed and Engaged Students and Faculty At the very core of the International Preparatory School (IPS) is the fostered relationship between the faculty and students. This dynamic school community is committed to developing each student’s intellect, lifelong principles, and character while developing intercultural understanding and respect for others. IPS has responded to the need for a higher level academic environment for our immediate community, and the international community at large. Our student body and faculty are multi-cultural with varied ethnicity that recognizes the importance of a global perspective, a mix of personalities, cultures and attitudes. The IPS curriculum is a unique combination of the core curriculum based on Texas Standards in combination with the philosophy of an international education. The Early Childhood Program, PreSchool 4 and Kindergarten, is a highly motivating program. Through the use of challenging phonetic instruction, basic math skills and hands on math applications, IPS is creating inspired, inquisitive learners. The IPS student’s creativity is expanded by integrating the arts, athletics and foreign language to their program. The Lower School, 1st-3rd, and Middle School, 4th-8th, are distinctly different experiences. As the students progress, they develop a more abstract level of thinking. With the use of science lab materials, and a wide variety of technologies, including lap top computer classes, foreign language, and fine arts, students are supported through a rigorous curriculum with the expectation of achieving academic excellence. There is a synergy as you walk through the door that is hard to ignore. IPS welcomes you to visit the school and experience the energy and enthusiasm for yourself. H
High- Grade Learning At Kids R Kids By Linda K. Eaves
A
t Kids R Kids, children benefit from the latest in researchbased, field-proven, early education training while incorporating play. Owners of ten Fort Bend County Kids R Kids locations explain five points that set them apart from other preschools: Concentration on Expert, Research-Driven Child Development – Kids R Kids uses the Learn with Play philosophy – planful, purposeful and playful. Their awardwinning curriculum works with children at specific age groups to build their language, physical, cognitive, social and emotional development in accordance with early childhood milestones. Children are “playing” and having fun while they’re building neurological connections that are vital during their formative years. Studies show the greatest capacity for learning is 0 to 5 years. Social and emotional development is also emphasized. “Children are taught words to use when solving problems and conflicts with their peers. They eat in a home-style setting where they ask to pass the food,” said Nannette Ray, owner of the Katy location. Sign Language is taught to the infants which studies have shown help them to communicate and learn speech sooner. Smart Board – The TeachSmart™ Smart Board is an interactive whiteboard with a touch screen that is 60” wide. Kids R Kids Fort Bend locations are the only private preschools utilizing the Smart Board with software designed specifically for children ages three to five years. The Smart Board offers 1100+
learning activities in four subjects -- math, emergent literacy, social studies and science that tie directly into the Texas Pre-K guidelines, as well as national accreditation guidelines like NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children.) Each learning activity has three levels so students are continually challenged; add a Wi-Fi connection and the learning possibilities are endless. “The screen itself provides an iPadlike experience with real pictures to hold children’s attention and stimulate development,” said owner of the Missouri City and Sienna Plantation locations, Rustom Khosravian. It’s an incredibly valuable resource for creating engaging learning experiences,” added Dan Bertoni, also owner of two Fort Bend schools.

Kids R Kids strives to provide the best educational environment for children and a safe and nurturing place.
Internet Camera -- Parents at home or work – even those who serve overseas -- can observe their children anytime. Grandparents anywhere in the world can log in to watch their grandchildren as well. Focus on Accreditation -Three out of the ten Kids R Kids in Fort Bend County are recommended for Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, SACS accreditation (the same accreditation as FBISD) and all other Fort Bend locations are actively working on district wide accreditation. Teachers’ Professional Development – Excellent facilities, technology and curriculum are all important, but none of those things work without dedicated, well trained and devoted teachers and staff. “We actively search for teachers already qualified with state licensure or teachers who are motivated to pursue their Child Development Associate (CDA) credential,” said John Caroll. Kids R Kids Private Preschools strive to provide the best educational environment for children and a safe and nurturing place that parents can feel great about as an educational choice for their children. Founded in 1990, Southminster School serves children from eighteen months through fifth grade in a loving, Christian environment. A low student/ teacher ratio, exceptional certified teaching staff, and multi-sensory activities promote a challenging curriculum, exemplifying excellence. Spanish, music, computers, library, physical education, and chapel complement the elementary curriculum. Monthly dance and art classes enhance the Fine Arts program, while preschool students experience monthly literacy enrichment activities. Fully accredited by SACS CASI, Southminster School maintains the highest quality education while promoting and utilizing individual learning styles. The preschool program uses developmentally-appropriate activities in a nurturing environment to engage and educate young students. The individual attention afforded by the small elementary and preschool classes permits teachers to be responsive to different learning styles and create challenges beyond the average classroom experience. Morning and afternoon extended care are available. All extended care programs have planned age-appropriate activities. In addition, a variety of after-school activities are available including computer club, karate, dance, art, tumbling, and fitness. The Turning Point Academy How’s Your Child’s School Year So Far? The co-founders of a world-renown teacher training company, www. ATiseminars.org, created the Turning Point Academy, a grades 6-12 private school that truly prepares its students for success in college…and in life! “As parents, we could not find the type of school we wished for our daughter.” We have trained over 50,000 teachers annually for over 20 years. With that knowledge, we decided to blend the best educational models into a learning experience that benefits today’s middle and high school students. Along with the pleasure of learning in a luxurious home setting with spectacular views, the Turning Point Academy proudly uses the NEW College Prep curriculum. Our curriculum is the “best of the best” and of course is recognized by The College Board. Both student and parents are personally involved in mapping out a plan for high school completion and a detailed plan for college enrollment and scholarships. Our students are taught to take ownership of their learning by mastering goal-setting and weekly planning— habits necessary for college and future employment! You won’t find shortcuts on our tests like matching, true-false or multiple choice. Our students truly master each subject before moving on. According to the National Association of Independent Schools, the median tuition for independent schools continued to rise in the 2007-08 school year. For non-boarding schools grades 9 and 12, that average tuition was $18,287 in 2007-08. To some parents, those figures were higher than they expected, as just 10 years ago this figure was more in line with a college education than secondary school education. Parents hoping to send their children to a boarding school can expect the bill to nearly double, as the cost of such a school was $35,791 for grades 9 and 12. The median tuition for grades 1 through 3 was $14,633. Parents can rest assured that financial aid is available at many independent institutions. In fact, 17 percent of students received financial aid at independent schools during the 200708 year. The average grant was nearly $11,000 as well. H Source: metrocreativeconnection.com

S
et in the 1870’s, True Grit focuses on a young teenager named Mattie (Hailee Steinfeld) whose father has been killed by the ruthless outlaw, Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin). As one could imagine, Mattie wants to avenge her fathers death so she begins searching for the roughest, toughest hombre that will essentially go out and kill Chaney. Mattie is intelligent and wise well beyond her years. The locals all recommend a bounty hunter who knows the Indian Territory like no other. Upon meeting one Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges), Mattie knows she has her man. Shortly before they leave on their quest of locating Chaney, Texas Ranger La Boeuf (Matt Damon) enters the picture. La Boeuf has been on Chaney’s trail for some time, but has found the trail to have become a bit cold. Much to his own chagrin, Rooster puts two and two together and realizes the Texas Ranger isn’t as talented as he first thought. As the quest is underway, Mattie comes to realize the world is as violent and unpredictable as the people within it. Mattie discovers she too has the true grit and determination to persevere through the elements, the dangers and the unknown to see her quest to the end. Quick - what was the last Western you saw that was worth a darn? Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven was remarkable, not to mention untouchable, as far as Westerns go for the past fifty years. I know what you’re thinking, too. True Grit is a John Wayne movie. Rooster Cogburn IS John Wayne, and vice versa. And who are these Coen brothers anyhow? How dare these yankee city slickers defile the original film and do a “do over”? I think you will be very surprised. This particular film doesn’t focus as much from Cogburn’s perspective as the original film did. Quite the contrary, the Coen brothers’ film takes a much more active position, similar to that of the Charles Portis novel. The primary character in the story is perfectly performed by newcomer Hailee Steinfeld. She is the glue that holds the film together. The performances of La Boeuf (Damon) and Rooster (Bridges) are just as effective. There is a confidence about the film from all characters. Lastly, the film is going to shock some folks at how good it actually is. Bridges gets kudos for performing one of John Wayne’s most memorable roles and making it his own. Watch for possible Oscar nominations for True Grit, Jeff Bridges as Cogburn, Roger Deakins for Cinematography and Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie. There is no doubt John Wayne would approve! True Grit Starring: Jeff Bridges, Hailee Steinfeld & Matt Damon Director: Joel & Ethan Coen Company: Paramount Now Showing: in Local Theaters MPAA Rating: PG-13 Grade: A+

Ball Boys By Don Maines
W
hen the Houston Texans play at home, those days are “sacred” at Rosa households in Fort Bend County because brothers John and Ricky Rosa are longtime “ball boys” for the team. The Rosa brothers are also partners in the restaurant business, and they’re always learning from coaches how to improve as managers themselves. Besides, it’s fun. “It’s our golf game,” said John, 40, of Richmond. “It’s our getaway from everyday life.” “It’s a dream, a chocolate dream,” added Ricky, 35. “We feel very fortunate. We never take it for granted.” Ricky paved the way for the brothers’ opportunity to work for the Texans by persisting in his dream to be a ball boy for the Houston Rockets. Ricky recalled how, from nosebleed seats at the Summit in 1986, he spotted workers wiping sweat off of the basketball court. Ricky was only 11, but the next day, he contacted the Rockets’ management to see how he could get that dream job. “They told me to write a letter about myself, my dreams and my goals,” he explained. “Then, for two years straight, I kept calling and calling and calling until finally they invited me to training camp at St. Thomas High School” in Houston. “I focused on the job and didn’t get caught up with the athletes,” he said, explaining how he got picked and spent the next ten seasons with the Rockets. As ball boys for the Texans, the Rosa brothers work only home games – eight regular season and two preseason games each year. But with 80-something basketball games the Rockets played, Ricky also traveled with the team to a number of cities across the country for games and their playoff series. Accordingly, Ricky earned two championship rings when the Rockets won back-to-

back NBA titles in 1994 and 1995. Meanwhile, John played high school basketball and football, graduating from Alief Elsik in 1989. Ricky played basketball and football at Elkins, graduating in 1995. Along with brother, Joe, of Sugar Land, the Rosa brothers grew up in the Houston restaurant business after their parents moved here from Brooklyn, New York. Their restaurants were called La Rosa Flying Pizza, said Joe, “because we hand-tossed it.” www.fortbend

Ricky also parlayed his experience with the Rockets into an on-field position with the Houston Oilers in that franchise’s final three years before moving to Tennessee. Ricky’s job was to hold the cord to Coach Jeff Fisher’s headphone. A year into that gig, another ball boy position opened, and John grabbed it. When Houston got the Texans franchise, the Rosa brothers were recruited as ball boys, or sideline assistants, for the new football team. This season, John mainly handles “K” balls, the ones for kicking, so he’s easily spotted wearing a big “K” on his chest. “On the field, we get the human aspect, the raw emotion. You don’t see that on TV,” he explained. “As businessmen, what we look at is the styles of the coaches, how as leaders, the coaches demonstrate to the players, and how players respond to them,” John added. For example, the brothers have watched as a coach immediately corrects a player “right then and there.” “That’s a good coach,” said John. “A good coach never stops teaching during the game.” The Rosa brothers own Rosarito’s Mexican Restaurant in Needville, which annually donates to the school district some $25,000 worth of football shoes previously worn by the Texans. Their other restaurant is Twin Peaks in Webster. They plan to open seven more restaurants through the Houston-area Twin Peaks franchise in the next eight years. For his community involvement, Ricky also has been named a hometown hero by Time Warner, and Fort Bend YMCA’s volunteer of the year in 2007. For that honor, he was nominated by Fort Bend Focus’ 2010 Man of the Year Mike Flory. So, next time you’re watching the Texans play at home, look for John and Ricky Rosa – your neighbors and Fort Bend’s hometown ball boys. H

Avoiding Surprises During Tax Time
Riverstone Receives Award for Vibrant Resident Lifestyle Fort Bend’s Riverstone recently received a C.A.R.E.S. Award from the Houston chapter of the Community Associations Institute. The award recognizes Riverstone’s efforts in hosting special events in the community planned by an on-site lifestyle director. After starting work at the beginning of the year, Riverstone Lifestyle Director Melanie Rushé developed an active events calendar, which ranges from on-site fitness classes to large-scale events that are open to the general public. Response has been strong. “This year has been amazing,” said Rushé. “And what a difference a few months can make. We had only a handful of residents at our first event, but more than 1,000 at October’s Trail of Treats festival. In light of increasingly strong response, we have planned even more activities and events for next year.” With a membership comprising community association volunteers, community managers and association service providers, the Community Associations Institute works to assist community associations in promoting harmony, community and responsible leadership. The C.A.R.E.S. Award is given quarterly to recognize excellence in several categories: special events, beautification, neighborhood projects, conservation and helping hands. For more information, visit www.caihouston.org. Riverstone, ranked fifth among the 10 top-selling Houston communities by housing consultant Metrostudy, is located at Highway 6, three miles south of U.S. 59. Home prices are from the $200,000s to the millions. For more information on Riverstone, visit www. riverstone.com. H
It’s almost time for tax season again and we know that everyone wants to avoid surprises. Here are some common areas where there have been recent changes: • Capital Gains – Have you thought about realigning your portfolio? We have some of the lowest tax rates for capital gains, but most experts agree these low rates won’t last forever. And remember, any losses can offset gains and be deducted up to a net of $3,000. • Charitable Donations – Dust off your old clothes, furniture and equipment and donate to qualified charities. Food to local food pantries and even cash works as well. • College Education – Do you know what expenses qualify for education tax breaks? Keep records for all tuition, fees, class supplies, books, graduate classes, and job training even if you used funds from a college savings plan. In anticipation of the upcoming tax season, Null-Lairson, PC is excited to announce that Jennifer Esch, CPA will be joining the firm as a principal. Jennifer is a Baylor graduate and has twenty years of experience providing tax and accounting services to clients in Fort Bend County. “We’re excited about Jennifer Esch, the opportunity to join this team of CPA accountants who provide the same personalized and friendly practice philosophy that we provide for our clients,” Esch said. “Null-Lairson also gives us the opportunity to offer our clients additional services such as financial planning, business valuations, cost segregation, auditing services and many more.” The entire staff of Esch, CPA will be joining Null-Lairson as well. John Null, managing shareholder of Null-Lairson, PC said, “Jennifer brings tremendous value and experience with her. We’re thrilled to have her and her team join our firm.” Esch will be joining Null-Lairson’s Fort Bend office. H

M edical F ocus Texas Children’s Health Center Sugar Land Provides Unique Experience for Pediatric Patients Receiving MRI Scans Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans can be scary for children. However, at Texas Children’s Health Center Sugar Land, pediatric patients receiving a non-sedated MRI now have an alternative to standard scans, thanks to an innovative, interactive environment. Texas Children’s Health Center Sugar Land is the only Houston-area provider that offers patients the “Ambient Experience MRI.” This recent offering transforms the typical test setting and makes the experience less intimidating for patients by allowing them
to select their own ambient theme for their visit. The brightly colored walls and animated lighting concepts help to reassure and relax patients during their scans. “Medical testing is always a bit disconcerting for children, adolescents and parents. Now, through the use of this new MRI environment, we can offer a distraction, by engaging patients in the testing environment. This should help them feel more at ease, allowing the testing process to run smoothly,” said Dr. George Bisset, chief of pediatric radiology at Texas Children’s Hospital.
To make the process even more comfortable, patients can also view movies through special movie goggles or listen to music, either through the radio or by bringing in their own digital audio player. Additionally, with the use of a Web camera, the technician is able to have face-to-face interaction with patients, in addition to standard voice communication, while they are inside the scanning machine. The Ambient Experience MRI is located at Texas Children’s Health Center Sugar Land at Williams Trace and U.S. Highway 59. H
Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Leading Cardiovascular Surgery in Fort Bend County In the past month, Uttam Tripathy, M.D., cardio thoracic surgeon, has performed two types of heart surgeries at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital that were the FIRST of their kind in Fort Bend County. The first was a Minimally Invasive Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting procedure. A coronary artery bypass surgery is needed when one or more of a patient’s coronary arteries are blocked, and the heart is not able to pump blood effectively. Usually, coronary artery bypass procedures are performed through an open heart approach, in which the chest is spread open from the midline and recovery is several months long. In the minimally invasive approach, the surgery is performed by spreading the ribs rather than opening the chest. The longest incision is on the side of the chest and is only 5 to 7 centimeters long. The surgical instruments used

are longer and thinner, so the surgery can be performed through fewer and smaller incisions. Because the surgery is minimally invasive, it offers several recovery benefits, including: • improved cosmetic outcome • reduced length of hospital stay • quicker return to normal activities • fewer restrictions following surgery Henrieto Delosreyes and Larry Jackson were two of the first patients to have this surgery. “I have had a surprisingly painless recovery, and I was able to go back to work two weeks after the surgery. Staying at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital was like staying at a hotel, and the quality of care I received, I believe, also helped with my recovery.” said Mr. Delosreyes. Mr. Jackson, another of Dr. Tripathy’s patients, said “I was
Methodist Sugar Land Hospital— Operating Rooms Expand Once Again out of bed the morning after my surgery, and I walked out of the hospital only four days later.” Dr. Tripathy also performed Fort Bend County’s first minimally invasive aortic valve replacement. In this procedure, the valve between the heart and the aorta is replaced while the patient’s heart is still beating. Replacing a diseased or hardened valve helps the heart pump blood more efficiently, and performing this surgery while the heart is still beating significantly decreases the patient’s recovery time and restrictions following surgery. “Performing minimally invasive surgeries helps us reach our goals of achieving better results with a faster and less painful recovery for our patients which allows them to return home sooner. Delicate surgeries like these can only be performed at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital in Fort Bend County. Their nursing and other support staff are highly skilled—many have been trained in the Medical Center” said Dr. Tripathy. Minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting surgery and aortic valve replacement surgery are just two of the many medical firsts that Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has brought to Fort Bend County. Just in the last couple of years, for example, Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s physicians have successfully performed abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, first angioplasty with stents, awake craniotomy, brain surgery, carotid artery stenting, gastric LAP-BAND® surgery & laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, open heart surgery, MRI-guided biopsy, robotic surgery, single-puncture laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, urinary bladder reconstruction, video-assisted esophagomyotomy, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery and 3T Breast MRI. To make an appointment with Dr. Tripathy or another cardiothoracic surgeon in your area, call Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s physician referral line 281-274-7500 or visit MethodistSugarLand.com. H

Twice in the last two years, Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has expanded their operating rooms, and are now expanding again to meet the community’s demand. The hospital will open two new operating rooms in the Main Pavilion on December 6, in addition to the current twelve. This will bring the number of operating rooms in the new building to 14, which will greatly expand patient capacity. “We’re trying to keep pace with the expansion in service lines and the number of new procedures the hospital is performing,” said Becky Chalupa, Associate Chief Nursing Officer. “This latest operating room expansion will allow us to handle a greater number of patients and provide more flexibility in scheduling for our surgeons and patients.” “I am excited to continue to increase my surgical time in Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s operating rooms as they are state-of-the-art which allows me to perform groundbreaking procedures,” says John Boon, M.D., urologist on staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, and the first in Fort Bend County to perform a robotic nephrectomy surgery, with Henry Pham, M.D. In the last couple of years, Methodist Sugar Land Hospital physicians and operating room staff have successfully performed services once www.fortbend

only available in the medical center – abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, first angioplasty with stents, awake craniotomy, brain surgery, carotid artery stenting, gastric LAP-BAND® surgery & laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, open heart surgery, minimally invasive aortic valve replacement, minimally invasive coronary artery bypass graft surgery, MRI-guided biopsy, robotic surgery, single-puncture laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, urinary bladder reconstruction, videoassisted esophagomyotomy, videoassisted thoracoscopic surgery and 3T Breast MRI. Each of these procedures was performed for the first time in Fort Bend County at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “Our operating room staff and physicians should be commended for their innovation and dedication to Leading Medicine at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital,” adds Chalupa. Ali Mahmood, M.D., colorectal surgeon on staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital adds, “I am looking forward to having more OR time in Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s state-of-the-art operating rooms and providing our patients with services close to home at a hospital that is known for excellence.” For more information on Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, visit www. M edical F ocus Having A Baby After Age 40 With the increasing number of late marriage and late start of the family, more and more women have been told that they are unable to bear children because they have C. James Chuong, M.D. reached premature menopause or they can only produce old or damaged eggs. They may receive donor eggs, as long as they are healthy, to carry a pregnancy and willing to take on the responsibility of parenthood. Patient’s friends or relatives are occasionally brought in to donate eggs,
but most patients prefer an anonymous donor. In addition to using the traditional paid donors, Cooper has developed an affordable approach, the Egg Sharing Program. Some women are in need of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) to become pregnant due to tubal blockage or low sperm count. If they do not have ovulation problems, and are willing to donate half of their eggs from retrieval procedures, they can be matched with a recipient. The recipient will pay a portion of the IVF charges for the donor, and there will be no egg donor compensation fee of $5,000 as in the traditional paid donor program. Cooper selects only those donors
who are otherwise healthy, bright, free of genetic and communicable diseases, and deemed psychologically healthy. The egg donation process allows a child to be biologically related to the intended father and gestated by the intended mother. Joining the world in celebrating the recognition of IVF in treating human infertility by the Nobel Prize Committee, our best wishes go to those who want to become parents. By: C. Living the Sweet Life
A Year in Review W
ell, it’s January. I honestly cannot believe it. This time of the year always makes me think about things that I did not get to in the previous year. There is, of course, all the improvements both to oneself and one’s home that always seem to get pushed back until right now, and then, I see, it’s January once more. There’s also the veritable “wish” list of want to’s that always turn into did’nt’s! I like the one especially that always makes it to the first of the list: Learn a new language. Or, like most of us, loose a few pounds! Alas, in the end, it’s the looking back over the past year that invariably helps me to get going with the real “need to” list for the year embarking. This year, I began by going through each compartment, if you’ll allow me to label it that, of my life and deciding on what should be kept, what should be discarded and what could be, and then, exactly how it could be improved upon. Last year, Lisa Geisler, author of A Time and a Place for Everything, physically organized the studio. This year, I organized mentally what changes needed to be made...everywhere else. In mental review: Personally, I gave myself a great big pat on the back. I quit smoking last year, and although not really a big deal for me to do, I know for some it’s treacherous and can be a lifelong addiction. I also gained about 35 extra pounds from doing this, and I am going to play the turning 40 card for as long as I can! My relationships with my family all reviewed and decisions made to spend more quality time with the children and the hubby. What about you? What is the status of your personal inventory? Are there relationships that need more attention? Are there people who are making you crazy that you can step away from and disengage? I looked at friendships, and who was there versus who was always promising to be. I was brutally honest with myself as to what kind of friends I want, the kind of friend I am and how all of that would be worked on over the next year.
Business wise: Professionally, I looked at who I currently was serving and how those relationships were doing. Who was my perfect client? I had allowed the business to creep into everyday....sleeping with orders in my head unable to let go. It is perhaps one of the disadvantages to working from home. LOL. I restructured how my time was going to be spent. No longer would I work every Saturday and never again on Sundays! Time really is all we have, and I was giving all of mine to the business. I was also allowing my charitable projects to drive me instead of me driving them, and I vowed to always stay in control of things I am doing for free. It’s amazing how true the old saying is, “Give and inch and they’ll take a mile!” Are there people or projects in your life that have tipped past I’m ok and into the taking blatant advantage of you? I urge you to assess all areas in your life, and gently remove the situations that fall into this category. Doctors will tell us that stress causes all sorts of issues, and stress is often caused by people and situations that we can avoid. Lastly, it is a new year and there is no more appropriate time than right now to find out what your passion is and to go for it. January begins a new year, and it is time for you and I to discover something fort bend

extraordinary about ourselves. An article I read in Psychology Today, November/ December, entitled “Stealth Super Powers,” helped me gain insight into conquering any would be fears that might have been lurking within me over my next step towards what my publicist calls “building celebrity.” Many of you are aware that the old location for Swoozie’s is now The Imperial Theatre. I, as a board member, enjoy shooting for the theatre their playbills and marquis. Back in October, I was offered the opportunity to create and perform a “One Woman Show” starring.... me! Yikes! I would read from my column, tell stories from my childhood, and basically do whatever. Best of all, the proceeds from ticket sales would benefit the theatre. At first, it was a little daunting. What on earth could I do for two hours that anybody would want to sit through? I am absolutely an artist but a performing one? Ahem... I wasn’t so sure. As I began to think about what I would do, and furthermore, what I was comfortable doing, a few new things began to emerge. What I have been working on is quite a stray from the Alisa you all know. It will be an evening filled with surprises and fun, and most enjoyable for a mature audience. I have stretched out of my “comfort zone” to emerge a little less afraid to just be me. What will you do this year to stretch yourself in a new way? The results are not as important as having gone through the journey.... at least that’s what the experts say! The article said, “Deep within you are powers you’ll never know you have-until they’re unlocked by fear.” We will see.... standing up in front of a what I hoped to see as a packed house, I’ll be afraid, but I will also be brave and will be doing something for a cause that I believe in. Won’t you join me? Tickets are available now at www.theimperial.org or by calling 281.277.7444. Happy New YOU Year! Take Care of YOU!
