DOES

SCIENCE DISPROVE CHRISTIANITY?

The myth is that all but a few scientists reject Christianity. The reality is that an overwhelming number of scientists are also devoted followers of Jesus Christ. The myth is that science disproves the tenants of Christianity. The truth is that a factual examination of both Biblical text and the record of nature blend together with a stunning consistency. In reality, scientiic discoveries continue to lead to a compelling faith in Jesus Christ and the Bible. COVER STORY

Building for the Future: Oyster Creek Manor A Unique Community

David Wallace, Costa Bajjali and Ray Aguilar: The team behind Oyster Creek Manor. By Martha Tate Photos by Nesossi Studios.

I

n just a few short months, the hammering will have stopped, the paint will have dried, and local residents will begin moving into Oyster Creek Manor, Fort Bend’s newest and most expansive

assisted living and memory care facility. Construction is scheduled to be completed in early September and the 53,000 square foot facility will contain 78 well-appointed suites, 55 of them dedicated to assisted living and 23 suites allocated to memory care. The two-story, state-ofthe-art facility will feature high-end finishes and Class A amenities. The project is a joint venture partnership between Wallace Bajjali Development Partners, LP and Outer Marker Properties, LLC. It is part of a 21 acre mixed-use “transitional living” community which will also contain active adult patio homes and an independent living facility. Future plans call for a skilled nursing facility and commercial office space to be added as well.

Extraordinary care has been taken to preserve many of the established and unique tree specimens on the site which create a tranquil outdoor environment for residents to enjoy. The assisted living facility is situated on 3.688 acres and features private dining amenities, a special events venue, a library, an activity/artsand-crafts center, a lounge, and a beauty salon and barber shop. The structure will also include an access controlled memorycare wing, featuring a private courtyard and dedicated full-time staff. Specialty services provided will include transportation, a full-time Concierge & Activities Coordinator, resort quality food service, wellness programs, weekly linen, housekeeping and laundry service, and, as needed, assistance with activities of daily living.

One of the unique features offered at Oyster Creek Manor will be SimpleC Companion which is a cutting edge, scientifically proven, non-drug therapy to promote memory retention. It is specifically tailored for each individual and blends technology with behavioral therapy utilizing familiar images, music, and voices from a resident’s own life to stimulate and help retain the memories of important people and key events. This service is delivered via a touch screen, multi-media display supplied to each individual in their suite. “We are absolutely thrilled with the interest and excitement we have received from the community about this project,” explained Costa Bajjali, co-founder of Wallace Bajjali Development Partners. “The questions about this facility and the interest from people wanting to know when we are opening our doors and how soon they can move in, are the number one hits on our corporate web site.” David Wallace, former three-term Sugar Land mayor and Bajjali’s partner, lights up as he describes this project. “We founded Oyster Creek Manor to be a unique place because this community is unique. We could not have a ‘cookie cutter’ assisted-living facility because this community is far too special for that.” Wallace explained that once he and Bajjali recognized the need for this type of housing option in the area, they set out to customize the design, operation, and every amenity to fully reflect the culture and beauty of the Fort Bend community. “Those who call this area ‘home’ have grown accustomed to a special kind of warmth, a connection to this region they never want to give up by moving outside of the area.” He believes this affection for www.fortbend

the community takes on an even greater significance when residents reach the stage of life when they can no longer live independently. The last thing they want to do is leave the “hometown” they have come to know and love. That is why the partners feel so passionately about their vision for Oyster Creek Manor. Their goal is to provide the opportunity for seniors to continue enjoying the culture and lifestyle they have always experienced in Fort Bend, regardless of their stage of life. While Wallace and Bajjali could provide the development experience and certainly possessed the understanding of and passion for the Fort Bend community, they sought a partner who could bring an equal amount of knowledge in the field of senior living and memory care. Additionally, they wanted a partner who would also share their vision to make this project truly unique in reflecting the Fort Bend culture. It was precisely that criteria which led them to Outer Marker Properties.

“We founded Oyster Creek Manor to be a unique place because this community is unique. We could not have a ‘cookie cutter’ assisted-living facility because this community is far too special for that.” ~ David Wallace

“Our commitment is to ensure that each resident experiences the highest level of service with each and every interaction they have with anyone on our team.” ~ Ray Aguilar

O

uter Marker’s founder is John Donaldson and he embodies the essence of their vision. Once a developer much like themselves, he founded his company in 1994 as he began searching for a place where his elderly mother, a retired nurse, could live and receive care. At the time, he could not find a senior housing option he felt was suitable for her. So, true to his entrepreneurial spirit, he built one. “I did not know what an 81 year-old woman needed or wanted in senior housing but we knew we had not seen it in our search. My mother told me, ‘If you listen to me, I will tell you what I need,’ and I listened intently!” The end result was certainly no “cookie cutter facility.” Instead, it was an elegantly designed home, reflecting a warm and gracious sense of southern hospitality with a care and attention to detail that was impeccable. Donaldson’s previous experience in both development and banking allowed him to begin assembling a portfolio of assisted living and memory care properties, each uniquely styled and founded to reflect the community in which it was built. Once Wallace Bajjali and Outer Marker Properties joined forces, the development and operations components were in place but they still needed to hire an Executive Director who embodied their vision. That was a very easy decision for the group once they began interviewing and one which resulted in the hiring of Ray Aguilar. Throughout his 13 year career in the field, Aguilar has utilized his educational experience of Business Management and Human Resources to create a one-of-a-kind, quality atmosphere

for residents. His experience in senior housing led Aguilar to develop an approach to care which he calls “service you can touch.” It stems from his belief that service should be so real and so authentic that it is physically tangible. “I believe service is so much more than just a word. People should be able to feel it—it should have skin on it,” Aguilar explains. “As executive director, it starts with me. When I demonstrate personal, tangible service to our residents and that embodies all that we do as a management

team, it establishes the tone for our entire staff and operation. Our commitment is to ensure that each resident experiences the highest level of service with each and every interaction they have with anyone on our team.” Ray Aguilar is no stranger to the local community having been a resident of the Houston area for 40+ years and having lived and worked in Fort Bend County for the past 25 years. Aguilar considers community service to be an integral part of giving back to one’s community and

has been engaged as an officer, board member, and community volunteer in countless philanthropic organizations. In an effort to serve the senior community in Fort Bend County, he has been an officer, director, and volunteer of Fort Bend Meals on Wheels for the past five years. He is also a Board Member and Vice Chair of the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce where he has received the prestigious Ursula Coates Award for Volunteerism. The immediate need for this project in the region is evidenced by our aging population. Many baby boomers are discovering a time when living independently is growing more and more difficult. They may need occasional assistance or have trouble performing some simple tasks they used to be able to do with ease. Another factor that can come into play is the need for companionship. While relationships are vital to us at all stages of life, they are especially precious to us as we age. Having people with whom we can share common interests, experiences, and conversation is not only enjoyable and immensely satisfying, but has also actually been proven to extend life expectancy. Recognizing this need, the founders of Oyster Creek Manor wanted residents in their community, who are approaching this stage of life, to have the opportunity for a new beginning. They believe individuals will discover a fresh lease on life as they meet new friends and pursue fulfilling lives. This kind of residential community, in fact, can provide opportunities for new beginnings without ever having to leave the familiar and beloved surroundings of Fort Bend. For residents who reserve their new home now, Oyster Creek Manor is offering a special Founder’s Program. These early residents will be able to have the first selection of suites, be commemorated with special Founder’s designation, and become a part of the inaugural group that will help mold and lead the future of this project, establishing it as a legacy for our local community. For further information or a tour of Oyster Creek Manor, you may call them at (281) 261-1217 or (281) 261-1296 or email them at info@oystercreekmanor. com or ray.aguilar@oystercreekmanor. com. n FBF

he majority of American children growing up in a twoparent household today are also growing up with both parents in the workforce. But according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of families choosing to have one parent stay home to raise children is on the rise. So, can you afford to be a stay-at-home parent, if and when you want to be? Many families think they cannot get by on one salary, but with some careful planning, at-home parenthood may be more affordable than you thought. The first step is to figure out how much work is costing you. Start by making a list of work-related expenses that could be eliminated if you stayed at home. Some examples are child care, transportation and other commuting costs, wardrobe and lunches. By subtracting these costs from your monthly net income, you can begin to realize how much actual income you are making, and what you stand to lose if

you become a stay-at-home parent. Next, identify ways to cut your family’s monthly expenses. There are probably expenditures that you do not have much control over, such as utility or property tax bills. However, chances are there is some discretionary money that passes through your hands each month that can be conserved through a number of simple changes, like eating out less or making weekly grocery budgets. Another smart way to prepare for at-home parenthood is tackling debt – especially when it comes to credit cards. Just think of all the ways you could spend the money you’re shelling out on interest payments if your credit card was paid off. Additionally, once debt is under control, you may want to build a financial cushion. With only one parent working, having an emergency fund can help protect against unexpected expenses or a job loss. Finally, work with your tax advi-

sor to find out if you will qualify for tax breaks you are not eligible for as a dual-income family. For example, having one income may mean stepping into a lower tax bracket, or getting more tax relief from the Child Tax Credit. Following these steps can help you understand where your money is being spent and whether or not your family can afford to live without a second income. This article is provided by H. A Shining Star‌ at Sixteen

By Nick Nicholson Photos by Kristine Canterbury

An interview with

As

a film critic, I have the opportunity to visit with all sorts of celebrities both young and old. Some may say that I have become a bit cranky in my old age, as I constantly complain about the youth of our country and how they have lost touch with reality. In my opinion, this is especially true in the entertainment industry. It would have been predictable for a successful 16 year-old actress to be full of narcissistic tendencies, yet she was not. There are exceptions to every rule, and Cierra Ramirez is definitely one of those exceptions. I had the opportunity to interview this bright Fort Bend resident about her blossoming career and could not have had a more enjoyable conversation. It is easy to see why Cierra is so successful as she is bright, respectful and full of energy about the business she loves. She enjoys her Fort Bend roots, is very close to her mom and is having a blast as a high school student. FBF: What first interested you in performing, and how did you get started? Cierra Ramirez: I started out doing lots of local competitions. I had some success with those and saw a competition advertised out in Los Angeles. I asked my mom about it, and we decided we might as well try. The competition was for a number of different categories in the acting arenas, so my mom and I decided to go for it. FBF: How do you prepare for a role? Ramirez: I try to immerse myself in the role and understand as much as possible about the character. If I find that I am having trouble with the part, I do go to a coach here in Houston. His name is John Lansch, and he helps me with a lot of my preparation. FBF: You have had a wide variety of guest appearances on television in some hit shows such as CSI Miami and Desperate Housewives. What were those experiences like? Ramirez: I had a tremendous amount of fun and great experiences all around doing those shows. The cast and crew associated with all of the shows were great. I learned so much from everyone, and they were so supportive of me and what I was doing. CSI Miami was absolutely incredible! FBF: You have done television and been in movies. What is different about making a movie rather than a television show? Ramirez: The biggest difference is the amount of work and preparation that goes into a movie, as it is so much longer time wise than a television episode. Also, the movies that I have been in, I was a lead character, which added a great deal of weight to my shoulders. With the pressure of being a lead, I really doubted myself. Luckily for me, the director really liked to rehearse a lot and through that, I was able to find the character and developed a great deal of confidence in what I was doing. I really ended up having a great time and learned a lot in both the television and movie mediums. FBF: Tell us about your experiences working for Disney playing Jasmine on the The Suite Life of Zach and Cody?

Ramirez: What is amazing is that still, to this day, I have people who approach me and ask if I was on that show. That’s incredible that so long after the shows run, so many people remember it and or watch it in re-runs. Many of the people that do that surprise me as people that I would think wouldn’t have watched that show, yet they did. Zach and Cody reached a wide audience evidently. It was a wonderful experience, and everyone was so nice. I am very proud to have been a part of that program. FBF: You had the opportunity to do a pilot for Nickelodeon titled, Star and Stella Save the World. In that program, you played Stella. Talk about your experiences with that show. Ramirez: It was a pilot, and we were really hoping that the show would get picked up. Nickelodeon was wonderful in many ways. I was excited as this was another opportunity for me to play a lead character. Disney and Nickelodeon were very similar and yet different in regards to the experiences. They were both great, though. Doing all of the guest star shots on shows were wonderful, but this was a lead role, and I really began to learn how to deal with the added pressure with this pilot. I had the most fun on set with this show and the other cast mates because they were all my age. FBF: In your first role, you were in the film All In. That film starred Michael Madsen. What was it like working with someone so iconic?

Care, gives you the opportunity to work with Eva Mendes, Matthew Modine and Patricia Arquette. That must have been a tremendous experience for you to work with such seasoned performers. Ramirez: They were all so wonderful. Initially, I think they sensed some of my apprehension and lack of confidence, but they were all very supportive and encouraging. They made me feel as though I was their equal. They gave me so much advice, which helped me with the role, then things just began to click. Everything about the job was a breeze because of the support and encouragement I received from everyone. FBF: What are some of the things that might have surprised you about the entertainment industry that you wish you had known before you started? Ramirez: Nothing really surprised me about the industry. You always hear rumors about this or about that. My advice is to stay away from that stuff. Never take anything personally. Constructive criticism is just that – it is meant to help you. I had heard scary things about the audition rooms and how they were just so awful. I found out they aren’t bad at all if you are prepared when you go to audition. FBF: What future projects do you have lined up? Ramirez: I don’t have anything lined up right now, as I am finishing up my school year. Once school is out, I am going out to Los Angeles to audition for whatever comes

Part of what is so great about this job is the journey of experiences we have. Any role is so much fun and you should enjoy it as much as you can and always be proud of your work! – Cierra Ramirez Ramirez: Yes, this was the very first role I had ever done. Going into it, I was really scared. Luckily, I knew the actress who played my mom in the film, Patricia De Leon, and it was the first time I was around so many cameras and crew. Patricia was very helpful to me in learning how to work through everything. Michael Madsen is such a great actor, and he was a little bit intimidating. I started out shy, but I really got to know him well. He was so much fun and such a professional to work with. FBF: Your most recent film, See If I

available, be it in television or in the movies. I love television, and I love movies, so it really doesn’t matter to me. More than anything, I just want a good part and will take what I can get. FBF: Other than those we have already talked about, what other performing experience has been the most memorable for you? Ramirez: I would have to say when I was ten years old and had the opportunity to sing at the Apollo. It was such a memorable experience to sing on the same stage that www.fortbend

.com • July 2011

23

Michael Jackson had years before. Showtime at the Apollo is such a great program! What was interesting about this is that I sang at the Apollo during hurricane Ike. Luckily, we had purchased our airline tickets before the storm came, and the whole time I was away from home, I was worried about what we would find when we came back. I was so worried. I actually lost my voice during our rehearsals. I was so scared and not sure I could do it. When I went on stage to perform, I just belted it out my rendition of I Am Changing by Jennifer Holliday. It was great! Still to this day I love watching myself in that performance. FBF: If you had your choice, which actor or actress would you most like to work with and why? Ramirez: I would say Rachel McAdams and Natalie Portman. I respect everything that Rachel and Natalie have done throughout their careers. Their performances are great, and they both stay out of the tabloids. I really respect them both for that. Everything they do, they take so seriously. It is easy to look up to and appreciate them. FBF: What advice would you give to young people who might be interested in following in your footsteps? Ramirez: I would tell them to work hard, live life to the fullest, learn as much as you can from everyone and have a blast! Part of what is so great about this job is the journey of experiences we have. Any role is so much fun and you should enjoy it as much as you can and always be proud of your work! The most important thing is to never, ever, give up on reaching your goals. H

Is Your Home and Your Roof Hurricane Ready? By Jennifer Babisak

The integrity of your roof is imperative in preventing devastating damage to your home, so consider calling a professional roofer to determine if your roof needs additional reinforcement in order to survive a storm.

Advertorial

T

he Weather Research Center recently issued a statement that struck fear in the hearts of many Houstonians, saying: “The 2011 [Hurricane Season] Outlook indicates the Gulf of Mexico to be more active…The coast of Texas and the coast of Georgia to North Carolina have the second highest risk of a cyclone landfall with 70 percent.” With the wrath of Ike still fresh on the minds of Houstonians, this prediction for a busy hurricane season leaves them worried. But rather than sit around and fret about the prediction, wise homeowners are beginning preparations in order to put their homes in an optimal position to weather a storm. So how should you ready your home for the upcoming hurricane season? Certainly assemble an emergency supply of food and water as well as other essentials such as flashlights and first aid supplies. Secure valuables in waterproof containers, draft an evacuation plan, and consider purchasing a generator. You should also address the structural integrity of your home. Purchase plywood for the boarding of your windows. And turn your attention to that structure that takes such a lashing during a storm – your roof. The integrity of your roof is imperative in preventing devastating damage to your home, so consider calling a professional roofer to determine if your roof needs additional reinforcement in order to survive a storm. Before a storm rolls in, have a professional roofer inspect your roof for damage such as missing, rotted, and blistered shingles. They’ll spot damage that could result in leaks. And, it’s important to catch leaks early, since exposing your home’s frame to continual dampness will weaken its structural integrity.

Cashion & Cody Dental and Orthodontics has begun construction of its new premier dental office building at the corner of U.S. 59 and Sweetwater Blvd. The 12,000-sq-ft one-story building will house the most advanced dental equipment including new laser and digital technology, and expanded patient areas. Additionally, the building will contain 4,000-sq-ft of office lease space. Completion is expected by year-end with occupancy in early 2012. “We have been practicing in Sugar Land since 1992, and we are excited about expanding our presence in this community,” said Tim Cashion, D.D.S. “Building our own dental offices one day has been our aspiration, and it is especially rewarding that we will be moving into the location as we mark our 20th year of serving Fort Bend County.” The “Williamsburg” design of the building will feature curved windows and stone columns. The interior design will provide a soothing and relaxing atmosphere. “Our practice is growing so it was important that we consider both our current needs and our anticipated growth as we evaluated options for new space,” said Teresa Cody, D.D.S. “This building allows us to construct exactly what we need now

to bring in new equipment while also considering future expansion. It is the perfect solution for our practice.” Houston-based HM General Contractors, specialists in medical and dental offices, is managing the project. The architect is Don Purser of Purser Architectural Inc. and Watson + Gale will provide the interior design. Cashion & Cody is currently located at 1111 Highway 6 South, Suite 185 in Sugar Land. When the practice moves into its new offices next February at 17003 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land, it will change its name to C&C Dental. he numbers are staggering -$500 million in annual sales on 20+-acres of space that produces more than 2,000 vehicle transactions per month. Texas Direct Auto, located at 12053 Southwest Freeway in Stafford, has seen monumental growth in recent years since its inception in 2002. The business is the largest eBay Motors Dealership in the world and the largest independent dealer in the United States. “The fundamental business principles have always been the same. What some think is an overnight success was actually 10 years in the making,” said Jessica DeMarr, Director of Business Development for Texas Direct Auto. “They started small and put in a lot of hard work.” Texas Direct Auto founders Mike Welch and Rick Williams didn’t look in the usual places when searching for a business model for a car dealership. The men had success in developing enterprise software for Fortune 500 companies and became interested in a business where they could sell something more tangible, DeMarr said. That technological mindset is the basis for the structure of the dealership, which started out as an online-only business. “They didn’t model their business like any other car dealership,” DeMarr said. Advertorial

“They knew nothing about the car business when they started and went outside the industry for inspiration.” DeMarr gives credit to the owners’ attention to detail for much of the dealership’s success. The new building Texas Direct Auto calls home is a 50,000-square foot facility that allows for walk-in customers, something that was impossible at the old location when the dealership was based mainly on online sales. The dealership’s sales are now almost split down the middle between the ever-growing eBay purchases and local walk-in customers. Those customers who walk in find a different Jessica DeMarr atmosphere than most dealerships because they aren’t met Director of Business Development Texas Direct Auto by a salesperson as they enter the lot. most money for their vehicles. “We get a lot of positive feedback from people thanking us for the experience they had selling us their car.” Texas Direct Auto’s growth is also seen in the Fort Bend area through the many outreach programs in which the dealership participates. The company is committed to more than just selling cars, DeMarr says. “We want to make a difference in the community and want to give back,” DeMarr said. “We are sincere about it. We don’t do it to make ourselves look good. This desire to give back is important to our owners.” The dealership, partnering with Fort Bend Focus Magazines, invests in the education of local students. Texas Direct Auto provided 12 scholarships worth $1,000 apiece over the past year through the Scholarship Stars program and they plan to continue another year. Scholarship winners are listed in each magazine monthly. That community commitment is also evident in health outreach projects such as the Texas Direct Auto Blood Drive, which was held in April. The drive, which drew 32 donations, included free food, prizes and broadcasts from local radio stations. Another

Texas Direct Auto Blood Drive is slated for 12-6 p.m. July 6. A fall blood drive will be held on Oct. 12. Donations from Texas Direct Auto provided roughly 25 percent of the annual budget for Lunches of Love, a program which gives sack lunches to low income elementary children and their siblings in RichmondRosenberg during extended breaks from school. The dealership provided lunches for 762 children during June through Lunches of Love, which was started by First United Methodist Church in Rosenberg in 2009. The dealership provided financial assistance for the Fred & Mabel R. Parks Youth Ranch, a shelter for Fort Bend County’s homeless and at-risk youth. These donations included helping to underwrite the cost of the facility’s grand opening and providing holiday decorations for the Parks Youth Ranch. “Education and children are our main focus,” DeMarr said. “We try to help everyone, but children are the future and they need to be everyone’s focus.” Culturally speaking, Texas Direct Auto is the Presenting Sponsor of Texian Market Days, a series of historical reenactments www.fortbend

picturing southeast Texas history. The program, put on by the Fort Bend County Museum Association, educates students about the rich heritage of the region in which they live. These include just the major projects in which the dealership is involved. It also sponsors countless Little League teams and other youth groups, as evidenced by the large collection of trophies the dealership is accruing. Texas Direct Auto’s thumbprint will soon be on the area’s sports scene in another way. The dealership is a founding partner of the Sugar Land Skeeters, a minor league baseball team beginning play in April 2012. Texas Direct Auto’s involvement with the franchise includes sponsoring baseball-shaped golf carts that will bring relief pitchers from the bullpen to the mound. Texas Direct Auto’s presence is spreading, from increased sales to the billboards throughout Southeast Texas to the lives that are touched through the several community projects the dealership helps sponsor. Welch and Williams set out in 2002 with a different idea for what a car dealership could be. Ten years later, the new facility and over 2,000 cars for sale on the over 20-acre lot are all the evidence one needs to see those goals have been realized. Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint & Emma Watson in The Deathly Hallows, Part 2.

T

he final installment of the two-film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows follows Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma Watson) as they search for the pieces of Voldemort’s (Ralph Fiennes) soul that he extracted from his being and hid in obscure locations both far and wide. If the trio is unable to locate and destroy them all, Voldemort will remain immortal. Despite their long friendship, a combination of dark forces, romantic tensions, and long-held secrets threaten to sabotage the mission. In the epic finale, the battle between the good and evil forces of the wizarding world escalates into an all-out war. The stakes have never been higher and no one is safe. But it is Harry Potter who may be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice as he draws closer to the climactic showdown with Lord Voldemort. It all ends here. The best way to accurately describe the conclusion to this billion dollar franchise is “wow.” The intensity and

emotions run as high as the action and violence does. This film represents the true definition of loss. The characters question alliances, relationships and everything is uncertain. Harry Potter represents the film and the solitude that it conveys. As I look back from a decade ago and the first film, we all witnessed the wizard kids as they frolicked from class to class, having fun with Hagrid and the creatures of Hogwarts. This film completes the matriculation of the characters from children at play to young adults dealing with death...violent death. Even at this point in time, the studio is wrangling with the MPAA in order to obtain a PG-13 rating for the film. I can tell you that I will be absolutely shocked if this film receives anything less than an R rating. (If the film does end up with a PG-13 moniker, director David Yates must have sliced and diced sections of

Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter in The Deathly Hallows, Part 2.

the film out of the final version). What Yates and his band of actors have done is created a brilliant film that ties all of the loose ends together, all the while showing sincere moments of humor as well as pure and utter devastation. The main characters have truly grown and evolved into their roles just as the supporting cast has done. The cinematography and special effects in this film are truly outstanding. I wouldn’t recommend watching this film if you haven’t seen the previous seven, as they all build on each other. The darkness of this film is quite frightening, and I would highly encourage you to leave the little ones at home. The battle between Harry and Voldemort will leave you simply awe inspired. As the adventures of Harry Potter come to a close, this film exceeds all expectations for this, the final installment. It would be nearly impossible for this film to end better than it does. A fitting tribute as the sun sets on the adventures of Harry, Ron, Hermione and the rest of the gang. Fort Bend Baptist Academy (FBBA), a premier college preparatory Christian school in the heart of Sugar Land, announced its official name change to Fort Bend Christian Academy (Fort Bend Christian, FBC). The FBBA name has been used for over 24 years and has become synonymous with excellence in Christian education in Fort Bend County and Houston. “We are very excited about the introduction of our new school name. We believe the name Fort Bend Christian Academy more accurately represents who we are as a school, Dr. Norm Slosted strongly committed to our founding core Christian beliefs and principles, and serving the entire Christian community,” said Dr. Norm Slosted, Superintendent of Fort Bend Christian Academy. “Our mission when the school was founded almost 25 years ago was to glorify God through excellence in Christian education. From an initial enrollment of seven kindergarten students in 1987 to today’s enrollment of almost 850 students in grades pre-kindergarten through 12, we continue to aggressively pursue that focused mission.” Fort Bend Christian Academy is an independent, private, college-preparatory school with more than 130 employees located on a 35 acre campus in the heart of Sugar Land. The 2011-2012 school year marks the Academy’s 25th anniversary. From those initial seven kindergarten students under the umbrella of Sugar Creek Baptist Church School, the school grew rapidly and in 1992 became an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational institution renamed Fort Bend Baptist Academy. During the 1993-94 school year, middle school classes were added, and high school classes followed the next year. Fort Bend Baptist Academy’s first

senior class graduated in 1998. With the rapid growth of the student body, the need to move from leased church space to permanent school facilities became evident. The high school campus, located at 1250 Seventh Street in Sugar Land, was completed in January 1999. In August 2002, the elementary/ middle school facility was opened at 1201 Lakeview, followed by a softball stadium, baseball stadium, and football/soccer practices fields completed in 2002-2003. In the fall of 2009, the Eagle Athletic Complex was completed and includes a track and football stadium. Synthetic turf was installed in 2010 at Eagle Stadium to provide year-round use of the facilities by the school, as well as providing much needed field use for youth oriented sports activities in the Fort Bend County community. “As we celebrate our 25th school year in 2011-2012, we are excited about the future of Fort Bend Christian Academy – a future built on the solid foundation of FBBA,” remarked Dr. Slosted. The Sugar Land Skeeters, Houston area’s minor league baseball team, and Texas Direct Auto today announced a partnership agreement that will make Texas Direct Auto a Founding Partner of the Sugar Land Skeeters and StarTex Power Field. The highlight of the 10-year “Founding Partner” agreement is the retro bullpen cart that will feature Texas Direct Auto on the 70’s-era cart, which were prevalent throughout professional baseball during the 70’s and early 80’s. The yet-to-be named cart will be visible with every Skeeters pitching change and will be supported by video board and public address announcements during the games. “Being able to bring back such a fun memory from childhood is very exciting and an example of our take on the baseball experience,” said Christopher Hill, Skeeters Vice President of Business Development. “Texas Direct Auto’s desire to have fun in our community makes this relationship special.” “We are excited about our partnership with the Sugar Land Skeeters, and we are looking forward to becoming even more involved with our community,” said Jessica DeMarr, Director of Business Development with Texas Direct Auto. “We want to show how much we appreciate and enjoy serving our neighbors with this fun and unique opportunity!” The cart is designed and manufactured by Soul Interface Studios.

T

oday’s kids are busier than ever before. Be it the increasingly competitive nature of scholastic life or the increase of two-income households where kids need something to do other than come directly home after school, children today are much busier than their school-aged counterparts of yesteryear. While it can be fun and beneficial for kids to participate in extracurricular activities, finding the right fit isn’t as easy as it sounds. When helping kids find an extracurricular activity, it’s best to consider a host of factors. Especially keep in mind that not all kids are the same with respect to interests. And what was enjoyed by their parents won’t necessarily be enjoyed by them.

Team sports, including baseball, can be a great extracurricular activity once kids are old enough to understand rules and cope with losing.

GETTING STARTED

The best place to start is to speak to kids about their interests. Just because Dad loved playing football doesn’t mean Junior is destined to be a gridiron great. Kids have their own interests, and those interests can be cultivated with the right extracurricular activity. For example, a creative child might enjoy an after-school art class a couple of times per week. Parents should also consider extracurriculars that can help kids grow as people. For instance, a child who’s shy in public but loves hamming it up at home might embrace an after-school theater program. Once options have been discussed with kids, take in a session or two before committing to anything. The shy youngster might visit the local theater program and enjoy it thoroughly, or he or she might decide against it. Either way, a visit will give kids and parents a sense of what the program is like and whether or not it’s the right fit. When visiting, observe the nature of the program. Is it an encouraging, vibrant environment? Do the adults and kids involved appear to be having fun?

GET THE INFORMATION

Parents want their kids to be as safe after school as they are during it. When looking for an extracurricular activity, inquire about the staff-to-child ratio and about the staff’s professional background. Any staffto-child ratio that is greater than 12:1 likely indicates a program that is understaffed, which could mean kids won’t get the attention they need. Also, ask for the staff’s references and work history in the field of child care. If certification is necessary or recommended, make sure the staff meets all requirements. Parents should also inquire about program costs. Though many programs are upfront about fees, some have hidden fees that can add up. Such fees can be for uniforms, equipment, class trips, etc. Extra fees don’t have to exclude a program from consideration, but it’s better to know about them in advance than have them come as a surprise.

CONSIDER A CHILD’S GRADE LEVEL

A child’s age and grade level should also be considered when choosing an extracurricular activity. Consult teachers about finding an age-appropriate extracurricular activity. For example, less competitive activities that emphasize fun might be more appropriate for kids in kindergarten and the first grade. For second graders, activities not offered at school, like learning to play an instrument, can help cultivate a child’s interest in a noncompetitive environment. As kids reach third grade and beyond, consider more rules-based activities, including team sports, as kids at that age are more capable of understanding rules and handling losing than younger kids. As children get older and move on to middle school, look for activities that reinforce learning and help develop a young person’s character, including their ability to interact with others. When looking for an extracurricular activity for kids, parents should consider a host of factors, including the child’s interests and age. H www.fortbend

Each day brings new beginnings, and Kids ‘R’ Kids is ready to lead every child to a higher level of success. We know that children learn through experience, and so we teach hands on. When learning about apples, we don’t just color an apple – we sort them, feel them, taste them, describe them and chart them. Class time has changed since we were in school, and not all learning takes place on paper. Our AdvancED accredited program and curriculum meet and exceed state and national standards and excel in the preschool classroom to prepare your child for what lies ahead in elementary school. We strive every week to make your child smarter on Friday than she was on Monday.

International Preparatory School the everyday curriculum. Studies demonstrate that healthy competition, be it through math or chess clubs, lead to a higher motivation in learning. Going to school should be an adventure. That adventure begins at age 4 at the International Preparatory School with a creative learning environment which continues through Elementary and Middle School. The curriculum aspires balanced academics while developing a strong social, physical, and moral aptitude. The International Preparatory School IS the choice many parents are making for their children. An environment that fosters the gifted and accelerated student as well as the under confident. If you have great expectations for your child, come by and experience the vibrant atmosphere at the International Preparatory School for yourself. For more information, call 281-208-1403. H

Parents have several choices when it comes to the education of their children. Those that visit the International Preparatory School are looking for something very specific. They are searching for a fresh philosophy and a renewed energy in teaching. Smaller class sizes rank as the number one concern. Why? Because this provides individual attention for students that require more support in some areas while addressing the needs of the gifted child. This all translates into a school where both the teachers and administration set common expectations in an open, interactive, understanding and energizing manner. Parents want a safe environment that maintains a high standard of discipline and respect, one that fosters a strong sense of community through school wide activities for all ages. Emphasis on well rounded education makes participation in extracurricular activities such as music and art, an integral part of

fter Lupe Gutierrez’s five children had grown up and left home, she felt it was time to retire from her life as a homemaker. Known for cooking delicious family meals from scratch, she announced mischievously, “My kitchen is officially closed. No more cooking from now on!” When Gutierrez decided to volunteer her time, she only had one stipulation... it had to be something that really made a difference. That’s exactly what she found when she got involved with Catholic Charities’ new Mamie George Community Center in Richmond. Gutierrez says that when the center was being built, she felt strongly motivated to trade in cooking at home for volunteering in the kitchen at the center. “But I still make tamales every Christmas so my kids have something to unwrap!” she laughs. Gutierrez has volunteered every day since the community center opened in January. She’s demonstrated an unselfish willingness to help wherever needed

and is a tireless and tremendous asset in Patty’s Café, a restaurant offering special meals to low-income seniors and an indoor/outdoor dining experience for the entire community. When asked why she devotes so much time and energy to MGCC, Gutierrez says,

“I’m inspired each time a client shares their story with me and how they just don’t know what they would have done without assistance from this agency.” “I just want to make others feel at home here,” says Gutierrez, and if you get to make her acquaintance, you’ll agree that it feels like you have indeed come home. Volunteering has exposed her to facets of life she had not experienced before, introduced her to new people, and helped her to cope with her anxiety about falling out of her wheelchair. The Mamie George Community Center staff thanks Gutierrez for her many hours of dedication and agrees that she’s truly an inspiration to all! Become a member now and own 30-thousand square feet of pure paleontological wonder, baring its fangs in Summer 2012. Besides seeing the brand-new hall before it opens to the public next year, new and renewing members will receive an extra three months of membership free, for a limited time only, as well as enjoy behind-the-scenes, special-access events all summer.

The predators and prey in the new paleontology hall will be in action—chasing, eating and escaping as they struggle for life. Embark on a prehistoric safari that takes you from the grand saga of human evolution, from tree-

climbing australopithecines to courageous mammoth-hunters. Along this journey you will see: • More than 50 new, mounted fossil skeletons including 24 dinosaurs all in “action” poses • An all-bone T.Rex featuring the best preserved and most complete hands and feet of any T.Rex found as well as patches of original skin • Fossil mummy of a Triceratops, with most of the skin still preserved intact • A 12-foot wide, reconstructed jaw of a Megalodon, a marine monster that was the largest shark that ever lived —poised in the act of ambushing a swimming mastodon • A 17-foot, fleshed-out model of a Dimetrodon presented alongside “Willie,” the most complete Dimetrodon ever found • Hundreds of hands-on specimens that allow for visitors to feel the bite marks on ancient prey carcasses and figure out which jaws inflicted the damage • A nesting site for a Quetzalcoatlus

Pampered Pets

e’ve all heard of those wonderful stories of a long lost dog returning home after everyone in the family has given up hope of its safe return. Everyone, except of course, the family’s young son, little Timmy. Little Timmy knows in his heart that his faithful companion is just out on a big adventure and will return home at any moment. Many days come and go, and just when even Timmy’s faith is starting to wane, his best friend comes trotting up to the house, tail a waggin’, and licks a plenty to go around. Sadly, lost pet stories like this don’t always end with such a happy ending. Over 10 million pets are lost each year, which is why we see new technology being introduced from time to time that allows us to stack the deck more in our favor to help ensure a safe return should our pet wander off and get lost. A new technological advancement that has just come along is an ID tag for your pet that is made of a material used in the International Space Station as well as by our military because of its durability. The remarkable thing about the tag is that you are able to encode information on the it so when it is scanned by any smart phone, (iPhone, Android or Blackberry) important information about your pet, contact information, or whatever you want it to read comes up on the Smart-phone screen. You can even encode a website or shoot a video of your dog playing along with audio that explains who he or she is and how to contact the family for a safe return. Pretty cool stuff for sure! This product has a great deal of potential for helping keep our pets safe. With over one million smart phones being sold, it seems like almost everyone has one – or has access to one – these days. Find a lost pet, scan the tag with your smart phone, and make someone very happy by helping returning a lost and loved pet. To learn more about the ID tags, visit www.K9Scan.com. H

Rose-Rich Veterinary Clinic Receives National Hospital Design Award

Rose-Rich Veterinary Clinic’s landmark new facility has been named national 2011 “People’s Choice” Veterinary Hospital in the veterinary industry’s 2011 Hospital Design Competition. Rose-Rich Veterinary Clinic was featured in the May 2011 issue of Veterinary Economics magazine, sponsor of the annual competition among newly-completed animal hospitals. The clinic’s new 10,000 square foot hospital opened in the late spring of 2010 at 2203 Thompson Road in Richmond. This location has remained the same since the then young business moved there in 1970, providing generations of Fort Bend residents with quality and affordable veterinary care. Practice owner Dr. Sharon Moore began planning for the new building in 2008, working with Austin-area veterinary architect Ralph A. Thibodeau to design a unique veterinary facility. Regional architectural influences and a courtyardthemed waiting room contribute to the

distinctive appearance. Other portions of the facility are notable by their functional design, providing efficient spaces for surgery, intensive care hospitalization and treatment procedures. Animal housing areas include eight themed luxury suites

with cable TV for the pets and Internetaccessible webcams for viewing by their vacationing owners. Among the elements praised by judges of the Hospital Design Competition were the facility’s overall beauty, inside and out, the stunning reception area, and its innovative use of technology. General Contractor Rosenberger Construction broke ground for the facility in July 2009, which opened in April 2010. Financing for the project was provided by Amegy Bank. High School HOT SHOT

By Melinda Wood

From Letter Jacket to Lab Coat

W

hile most high school seniors hope to write a highscoring SAT composition or a compelling essay in their college applications, there is one Hightower High School student that has a bigger paper to pen. At just 17 years old, Neerja Aggarwal, already a research student at Rice University, is poised to be a published author by the time she starts college in the fall of 2012. For the past year, Neerja has spent her after-school hours at Rice University in the lab of Dr. Andrew Barron studying the structure and synthesis of multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Now alongside her mentor, graduate student Alvin Orbaek, Neerja has the unique opportunity to co-author a paper detailing her research. However, the chance to be published is just the icing on the cake for this young researcher. Neerja took her project titled, “Carbon Nanotube Synthesis and Characterization” to the Science Engineering Fair of Houston last April. Competing against 1,000 other entries, Neerja won six special awards including the Senior Physical Sciences Grand Award qualifying her to compete at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held in Los Angeles in May. For Neerja, the experience was “absolutely amazing.” “I flew down to Los Angeles and spent the whole week with kids from around the world who have the same passions that I have,” Neerja shared. “It’s not like sports or arts. There’s no real protocol. With research, you have to apply practical skills to figure out the problem at hand.” Academic research has interested Neerja since she was in elementary

Neerja school when she competed in her first science fair with a project that involved melting ice. Now many school years down the road, Neerja knows how to make hydrogen – a feat that helped her take home first place at the Texas State Science Fair in 2010. Neerja describes herself as very driven person especially when it comes to research. “I absolutely love to learn. I go to lab after school and might learn ten different things and it’s a big impact,” Neerja said. “We need to develop the technology to help with cancer and energy to make the world a better place. That inspires me.” With a myriad of science honors, Neerja insists that research is only part of her life. Having already mastered the art of time management, Neerja is an active Girl Scout working on a project to earn her Gold Award, the highest achievement a Girl Scout can receive. “For my Gold Award project, I’m actually doing a science camp for elementary school students,” Neerja said. “It will be a day workshop of making volcanoes and planetary models. I want them to

learn about how fun science can be. That’s what I want to communicate to fourth and fifth graders.” But, Neerja’s extracurricular activities don’t stop there. A member of the National Honor Society, Neerja has lettered in academics. She’s also very involved in Hightower’s theatre program and serves as the state vice president of HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America). With an incredibly bright future ahead of her, Neerja stays humble and credits her family and her many mentors with helping her get where she is today. “My family came here when I was about four years old from India. We’ve been through a lot of hurdles,” Neerja said. “To see how hard my parents work for us makes me want to make them proud.” She goes on to say, “I’ve been fortunate to have so many helpful people around me. My lab mentor is so amazing. He volunteers his time to help me learn. My troop leader is also such a huge inspiration. She’s so motivating and supportive.” Looking toward the future, Neerja knows she wants to have a career in science, but hasn’t made up her mind quite yet between the medical field and chemical engineering. She’s also beginning her college search with an open mind, but does have her eyes on Stanford University. Whatever Neerja decides to do with her career, it’s clear she has the talent and the drive to reach her goal – to help change the world. H

Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has received The Joint Commission Primary Stroke Center Certification. The certification recognizes Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations. Achievement of certification signifies that the care provided encompasses the critical elements to achieve long term success in improving outcomes. It is the best indicator to the community that the quality of care provided by a hospital is effectively managed to meet the unique and specialized needs of stroke patients with the best possible outcomes. “With a stroke, time lost is brain lost, and The Joint Commission Primary Stroke Certification addresses the im-

Methodist Sugar Land Hospital celebrates Expansion of Breast Center portant element of time,” said Amitabh Shukla, M.D., Medical Director of the Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Stroke Program. “The mortality rate for stroke in Harris and surrounding counties is twice as high as the national average, making it even more important for Methodist Sugar Land Hospital to bring this higher standard of stroke care to Fort Bend County residents,” said Maria Socci, Manager, Stroke Program. Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has developed a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients in the emergency room. Stroke patients will have access to immediate brain imaging scans and timely review by the radiologist, as well as a neurologist who will conduct patient evaluations and use clot-busting medications when appropriate. “To receive The Joint Commission Primary Stroke Certification, Methodist Sugar Land Hospital consistently followed The Joint Commission standards. These standards include aggressive use of medications like tPA, antithrombotics, anticoagulation therapy, DVT prophylaxis, cholesterol reducing drugs, and smoking cessation,” said Socci. “Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is focused on improving the quality of stroke care by achieving The Joint Commission Primary Stroke Certification. The number of acute ischemic stroke patients eligible for treatment is expected to grow over the next decade due to increasing stroke incidence and a large aging population,” said Janet Leatherwood, CNO at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is one of the leading causes of death and serious, long-term disability in the United States. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year. Methodist Sugar Land Hospital continues their legacy of Leading Medicine by expanding the Breast Center to provide complete care for patients – from screening and diagnosis to survival – all in one comfortable, convenient location. In response to the increasing demand for our services, the Breast Center recently moved to its new location off Town Center Blvd, still on the Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Campus. The larger space features a warm, comforting ambiance and more comfortable, spa-like furnishings to put patients at ease. To celebrate the new expansion of the Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Breast Center, the Fort Bend Community, Fort Bend Junior Service League and Central Fort Bend Chamber Alliance members joined Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s staff and physicians in an open-house. Over 300 guests attended the event and had a chance to tour the Breast Center, meet the physicians and hear about the expanded services now available in the Breast Center. “It was great to see so many community members and business leaders at the event. I now hope that those who attended can spread the news that this Breast Center is right in their community and offers everything from dedicated, highly trained breast radiologists, the latest technology and a focus on personal, compassionate care all in one convenient place,” said Sandra Templeton, M.D., board-certified surgeon specializing in breast surgeries and on staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. its original facility. “We are meeting a very real need in the community,” says Stephen Phillips, M.D., board-certified breast radiologist. “The center is staffed by a multi-disciplinary team of breast care specialists, working together to provide the most comprehensive care possible in one convenient location. That is a combination that is difficult to beat and one our community is taking advantage of and using.” Our full-time breast radiologists are exclusively dedicated to breast care and read every image taken in the Breast Center and perform procedures with the use of state-of-the-art technology. Having this full-service expertise available to patients everyday is unique to Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. When choosing a Breast Center to meet your needs, it does make a difference where you go. Patients who choose the Breast Center at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital can undergo a mammogram and, if necessary, an ultrasound or MRI often on the same day. In addition, all biopsies are sent to our on-site pathology department. “We are providing the full continuum of care – from screening all the way through surgery or radiation – all in one place. Having a dedicated center enables our physicians to communicate with one another more effectively and coordinate care more efficiently, which means the women are able to begin treatment immediately,” Phillips said. Sugar Land Area Residents Can Benefit from Lasik Eye Surgery Allowed by NASA for Use on Astronauts

Sugar Land residents considering vision correction have another reason to be confident in iLASIK, as the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA) allows the new advanced, all-laser iLASIK technology for use on U.S. astronauts. The recent NASA decision was made following review of extensive military clinical data using the iLASIK Method, which showed the technology provides superior safety and excellent vision. “Even your most-extreme lifestyle is nothing compared to being ejected from an F16 or the G-Forces of atmospheric blastoff,” said Amjad Khokhar MD, Medical Director, Sugarland Eye & Laser Center. “With today’s advanced iLASIK technologies -- which feature the use of two lasers, instead of one as with earlier forms of the procedure -- patients can be confident that they will have improved vision, but also that the procedure has proven to be extremely safe as well.” Approved for use on consumers almost a decade ago, more than 11 million LASIK procedures have been performed to-date, making it the most-common elective surgical procedure in the U.S. But it wasn’t until iLASIK developed that NASA al-

lowed it for use on pilots, mission and payload specialists who face extreme, physically demanding conditions in space. The all-laser LASIK, which utilizes wavefrontguided and femtosecond lasers, have also been cleared for U.S. military personnel, including most recently Air Force pilots. Sugarland Eye & Laser Center offers the highly advanced iLASIK right in their Sugar Land office. Today’s Advanced Ilasik Uses All-Laser Technology LASIK is a two-step procedure. In advanced iLASIK, the computer guided, ultra-fast IntraLase FS (femtosecond) laser is used in the first step to create the corneal flap, virtually eliminating almost all of the most severe, sight-threatening LASIK complications related to hand-held microkeratome blades historically used to create corneal flaps. In the second step of advanced iLASIK, wavefront-guided technology maps, then custom-corrects vision based upon the unique characteristics of an individual’s eye. This sophisticated measurement provides 25 times more precision than measurements using standard methods for glasses and contact lenses, taking patients to 20/20 vision and beyond.

cine in Fort Bend County since 1998 and look forward to continuing on that path for years to come as we serve this great community,” said Janet Leatherwood, CNO at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. To schedule a mammogram at the Breast Center, please call 281-242-PINK (7465). For more information, visit www. MethodistSugarLand.com or call 281-2747500 for a physician referral. H

Lasik’s Final Frontier Concerns about the harsh aviation environment prevented the earlier forms of LASIK from use in the military and NASA. To date, aeromedical professionals have been cautious of employing the procedure on military aviators who frequently encounter environmental extremes such as high altitude, dry air, wind blast and “G” forces. In space, these and other conditions add even higher levels of concern due to the extreme precision needed during flight and space walks. In the U.S. laser vision correction market, iLASIK is the new standard, rapidly becoming the most widely performed laser vision correction procedure. In fact, the majority of premier ophthalmic teaching institutions, including Duke University Medical School, the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins, the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at University of Miami, and Stanford University, totaling over 16 domestic and international teaching institutions, use iLASIK to train the next generation of LASIK surgeons. Sugarland Eye & Laser Center leads in providing premium LASIK technologies to Houston, Sugar Land, and the surrounding region. The center introduced revolutionary technologies such as i-LASIK to the region. The doctor and staff specialize in providing a compassionate and personal LASIK experience. For more information, please contact the center at (281) 240-0478. H

Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital Receives Accreditation from Society of Chest Pain Centers Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital has received Chest Pain Center Accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers SCPC, an international organization dedicated to eliminating heart disease as the number one cause of death worldwide. fort bend

“This accreditation is validation of excellence and high-quality care for cardiac patients at our hospital,” said Jim Brown, CEO of Memorial Hermann Sugar Land. “We are proud to receive this distinction and proud to be one of the only hospitals in Fort Bend County to achieve it.”

More than five million Americans visit hospitals each year with chest pain, and 600,000 people die of heart disease annually, according to the SCPC. Hospitals that have received SCPC accreditation have achieved a higher level of expertise in dealing with patients who arrive with symptoms of a heart attack. They emphasize the importance of standardized diagnostic and treatment programs that provide more efficient and effective evaluation, as well as more appropriate and rapid treatment of patients with chest pain and other heart attack symptoms. They also serve as a point of entry into the healthcare system to evaluate and treat other medical problems, and they help to promote a healthier lifestyle in an attempt to reduce the risk factors for heart attack. To become an Accredited Chest Pain Center, Memorial Hermann Sugar Land engaged in rigorous evaluation by SCPC for its ability to assess, diagnose and treat patients who may be experiencing a heart attack. Living the Sweet Life:

Making Memories in the Sun!

James Edward and Victoria Ann enjoying summertime at water ski camp.

S

ummertime! It’s hot and the best time to go out and enjoy water sports! I remember getting up at the crack of dawn as a kid and packing up stuff for the day at the pool. Back then, we would start swim team practice early, about 6 am, and then, stay all day getting out to eat lunch and of course, a Reese’s cup or two! It was a simple time where a good book and a bottle of sunscreen was the only thing you needed to be entertained. Times are different and my children, like most, have grown accustomed to hours of play on electronics such as a Wii or an Xbox, leaving them mesmerized for hours in the air conditioning. Not a bad idea for the hottest parts of the day but seriously, not very stimulating otherwise. For the last two summers, I have fought with both of my children about how much time they spend glued to an electronic device, and I swore this summer would be different. I signed them up for camp Holy Wilde with the church, and I signed them up for horseback riding camp. I bought all sorts of books on summer curriculum and actu-

ally tore out sheets for each week for them to do. The camps were met with a little excitement....the worksheets got me some looks. LOL! A friend of mine called and asked if they might want to go to a water ski camp, and I thought well… they can swim and so perhaps they might like that too. The first week out of school, I pulled out their weekly folders filled with crosswords and word searches and yes, grammar drills and math practice sheets. Grumble...Grumble. Another friend and I spoke about our concerns of “electronic vegetation” and that if left unchecked, can turn into an entire summer of opportunities gone. There are, after all, only so many years of childhood to just enjoy summertime. I thought about motivation and tied into the weekly folders a reward system of an allowance. I added that God forsaken word “chores” to their mix of responsibilities, too. This all – so far – has gone over fairly well. Week one they actually finished their weekly folders and yes, did pick up pool toys, tidy up rooms and spend less time on videos. After some thought, I decided to add a demerit sysfort bend

tem for back talking and sibling fighting to help keep their behavior in check. This has worked too! After all, tt’s kind of disappointing to work hard all week getting it right and then loose money for being sassy! But, I figure it’s best to figure out early on that there are consequences, and as I have discovered in mothering, and as of late parenting, it only gets tougher. It’s easy to do a time out with a toddler. It’s harder to create a sense of responsibility and instill a real desire for learning just for learning’s sake throughout childhood. As I packed up the children for the second week, I was a little sad to see them go but figured the end result would be a better knowledge of water and hopefully, meeting some new friends! When I went to get them, I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, they had learned more about water and since we have never really gotten into group sports, the water boarding sport is a good one for us as a family. Both of them were kept so busy all week that they had not had time to do any of their folders! Oh well. After all, school will start soon enough and at least for now those “glued to the video days” are a fleeing memory! After seeing how much fun they had and hearing them beg for more weeks at water ski camp, I gave in and decided that this summer was going to be about having fun. This next week they’ll be back to cracking those folders open and “work sheeting” it away. But soon enough, they’ll be gone again and back out on the water. That’s really what childhood should be about, right? Summertime fun sprinkled with a little work and building lasting memories. I see that it won’t be long before a boat is in my future. I can think of nothing more important than giving in to making childhood memories and creating a love of a sport that everyone in the family can enjoy! I hope you are enjoying your children and can find a summertime “thing” that everyone enjoys as well! Cheers to Childhood! Take Care of You!
