The answer to both questions is yes. Please contact us if you would like to have your bio-identical hormones made at our PCAB-Accredited facility or need a physician referral. You can bring in your original prescriptions, have your doctor call or fax us new prescriptions or we can even transfer your prescriptions from other pharmacies. Alternatively, you may schedule a consultation with us by accessing our website at: www. compoundingcornerpharmacy.com, click on the “Wellness Consultation” tab and follow the directions. A successful bio-identical hormone replacement regimen consists of a balance among incorporating family and personal history, dosage form preferences and clinical response. This means that your dosages may change. How many of you have ever had left-over medications that you paid for and couldn’t use because your dose changed? At Compounding Corner Pharmacy, Inc.®, we are cognoscente of that problem and have a goodwill policy to address that issue. If Shannon Maguadog, Pharm. D. your dose changes, we will accept your unused compounded medication back Compounding Specialist / Owner and destroy it for you. A credit will then be issued towards your next compounded prescription. That way, you are not stuck with medication that you can’t use. We also have bulk discount pricing available. Bio-identical hormones are tailored to your specific needs and must be compounded in a compounding pharmacy. Not all compounding pharmacies are the same. Significant differences exist in experience, training, facilities, quality and safety. Compounding pharmacies that take the quality and safety of your compounded medications seriously are PCABAccredited. It is highly advisable to get any compounded prescription from a PCAB-accredited compounding pharmacy. This is why we have patients all over the nation requesting we ship to them. Participating in bio-identical hormone replacement is a choice each individual must make based on a risk versus benefit comparison. Make an appointment with your doctor to see if bio-identical hormone replacement is right for you. If your doctor will not assist you, you can call Compounding Corner Pharmacy, Inc.® at (281) 494-7777 for referrals. Hello Fort Bend Friends, Happy Father’s Day! I always feel a little embarrassed when my kids honor me one day a year for doing what I should be doing every day. Remember (I have to remind myself also) that Father’s Day is every day we wake up to our children. Never-the-less, June 20th is Father’s Day and we always appreciate the fuss and all our kids saying Kathryn, Jack & Carter ‘Happy Father’s Day’ in all their little different ways. Our cover story features a father of a different kind. The Father of St. Laurence Catholic Church, Fr. Drew Wood is father to thousands. Check out “future fathers-in-law” in our Real Weddings section. If your wedding missed this section, go to our web site right now and download our wedding form and send us your wedding for consideration in our next Real Wedding section, which is January, 2011. Don’t forget to browse the numerous Seen on the Scene pictures of Fort Bend residents. See if you know anybody that went to a recent gala or charity event and remember you can download any picture in high resolution for free. Thank you all for your story suggestions every month. Personal Political views... I enjoy the way your magazine focuses attention on the many positive people and happenings in our community. Your May 2010 issue, though, seemed to stray from its purpose by allowing Dr. Peter Osborne to express his personal political views under the guise of a “Focus on Health” article. I respect his opinion but I do not think this magazine is the place for an editorial. Otherwise, keep up the good work. Kim

Journey to the Priesthood
A
fter praying The Rosary on Friday mornings, Father Drew Wood ends the prayer with: “And so my dear family . . . ,” said Sharon Ehrenkranz, director of communications. “He’s like a father to us.” Fr. Drew is the beloved pastor of St. Laurence Catholic Church in Sugar Land. Like a good shepherd, he has given his life to care for his flock – 37 years of serving in various capacities of the priesthood. He immediately felt at home when he was assigned as Parochial Vicar in 1998. He had a great affinity for the Life Teen Mass and made it his own – he loved the music and teens and longed
to bring them closer to God through the Eucharist. In 2002, Fr. Drew was installed as Pastor of St. Laurence – one of the largest parishes in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston with 6,200 families. Recently, he was proclaimed National Catholic Education Association Distinguished Pastor. Tamara Kontrimas said, “The school children love Fr. Drew. When he walks by the playground at recess, young children stampede to the fence and yell: ‘Fr. Drew!’ He loves them and responds to them with smiles, silly faces, songs and hugs. When he was 11, Fr. Drew’s mother died. He pointed to her photograph on her wedding day. “She was lovely.” She had terrible asthma and died at 34. “Nobody can replace your mother,” he said with sadness in his voice. He was the oldest of five children; his father remarried a widow, and a blended family grew to ten children. About that time was when he first began thinking of becoming a priest. He attended St. Thomas High School where he was Student Body President. “I loved St. Thomas. I was a high achiever, graduated fourth in my class, played intramural sports and was in the Debate Club. I was very involved . . . and I dated a lot. Everybody just kind of dated everybody – just getting to know people. I had a wonderful time. Those were fun years.” “But always in the back of my mind, I was still thinking of being a priest.
I didn’t tell anybody, except one very good friend who was also thinking of being a priest.” After high school, Fr. Drew attended St. Mary’s Seminary in Houston for a year and decided not to return. At that point, he didn’t know if he wanted to be a priest. At the University of St. Thomas in Houston, he became a history major, and had been thinking of getting into the Foreign Service, the diplomatic corps, politics or government service. “I wanted very much to give my life for some great cause.” A couple of summers he took great courses at Georgetown in the Foreign Service School. He graduated from the University of St. Thomas as valedictorian and was President of the Student Body there as well. He performed in Threepenny Opera as Mack the Knife and was in University Singers and intramural football. “I was always very active. I loved sports and played intramural sports all those years.” He graduated from the University of St. Thomas at the height of the Vietnam War and wanted to go to law school, but couldn’t get a deferment. He applied for a special program in the Navy – the JAG program -- after which he would become a navy lawyer. “I was accepted and was able to go to law school and would come out as a naval JAG officer. I attended University of Texas in Austin for law school and went on a couple of Celebrating Mass.

summer training sessions as a midshipman in the Navy.” “I had always loved school. I thought I’d love law school and went in with a very positive attitude. After about a month I realized: This is not for me. That turned out to be one of the roughest years of my life because I realized I was in the wrong place.” “Here I was, 22, a midshipman, going to be a navy lawyer, just starting law school, but I realized very early on that I was in the wrong place. I prayed a lot that year for the Lord to show me the way because I was just miserable. By the spring and summer of the next year, it was all starting to come back to me again. It’s the priesthood – the thing you started thinking about at 11. Once I realized that -- at 23 -- I was so happy.” “I remember I was on a training cruise with the Navy that summer when I began to realize this, and one night dancing on a dock next to the ship, looking up at the stars in the sky, I was so happy. I finally knew what I wanted to do with my life and what God wanted me to do with my life.” He was given an honorable discharge from the Navy and didn’t have to finish law school. He returned to St. Mary’s Seminary. Four years later, he was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Galveston - Houston. www.fortbend

Fr. Drew when he was a seminarian.
His father was very unhappy when he left law school. “He had big plans for me – to be someone important in society or politics. He thought I was running away from the real world, going back to the seminary I had already left once. Later he saw how happy I was and became my biggest fan for the rest of my life – proud and supportive and always very happy for me. You have to find out what your dream is. I thank God for enabling me to do that.”
Joys and Sorrows “It’s a great experience to have the school mass with the children and the Life Teen Mass. Children can’t tell you what celibacy means, but they know that you’re different. You don’t have a wife and you don’t have your own children, so they think they are your children. “A priest’s life, in my experience, is not cold and sterile, detached, or sad and lonely. There is tremendous love and warmth and relationships with so many people. It really does give a freedom. The freedom’s at a cost, but it is a freedom.” Continued on page 16

He recalls at St. Thomas High School when he was introduced to an exchange student from Quito, Ecuador. “I went out with her a lot; at the end of the year she went back to Ecuador. Three years later, I learned she was Miss Ecuador in the Miss Universe Pageant. Over the years, I joked: ‘Look what we have to give up for the priesthood,’” he said with a laugh. While working with teens and young people, many of society’s problems come to surface. “People’s priorities are out of whack. Many people would like God to support their agenda for success instead of surrendering their life to God’s will. God is part of their success strategy, but God is not their life, where their life is really surrendered in love, obedience and truth to this wonderful God. Consequently, things start to fall apart, unless you’re worshiping and loving the one, true God. There are so many temptations today -- ambition, lust, fame, power, greed.” “Some young people are so pressured, going from one activity to another, where they’re expected to excel at everything. They need downtime to just be kids. Even some of our high-achieving teens are afraid from the moment they wake up trying to live up to expectations others put on them and they put on themselves. Anytime you can offer them joy and gentleness, which are the

fruits of the Holy Spirit, they’re going to jump at that because they’re in a pressure cooker so often.” Fr. Drew feels blessed to have served his priesthood in the Houston area near his family. He’s thankful to God for sustaining him through illness and enabling him to serve as pastor. “I love St. Laurence. This is a great parish full of life and love. The masses are beautiful; the music is awesome. The volunteering is great; we have a wonderful staff. There are lots of prayerful people in fort bend

this parish.” He pointed to a photograph of a beautiful young girl who died of a stroke. “One of the sorrows of being a priest is losing a member of my parish family – especially a young person, because of illness or a traffic accident,” he lamented. Pointing to a picture of a beaming young man walking down the aisle on his ordination day, Fr. Drew said, “I was a happy young man that day. Now I’m old, and I’m still happy.” FBF

Adding Value To Your Small Business
A
recent figure from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that 60 percent of all employees working for private companies currently have access to retirement plans through their employer, but only 50 percent are actually participating. Retirement plans play an important part in a company’s overall benefits plan, so let’s review a few options available. While pension plans at large corporations have shrunk considerably over the past 20 years, they are now generating greater interest among small businesses. This is especially true of business owners who put off saving for a number of years to instead focus any additional capital on growing their business. In an effort to make up for lost savings, the defined benefit pension plan gives individuals the opportunity to sock away a significant amount of earned income taxdeferred. Defined benefit pension plans provide participants with a fixed lifetime annual benefit at retirement, which is actuarially based on compensation, age and years of service. While favorable to older, highly compensated employees, they can be established by any type of business – incorporated or not. Additionally, there are substantially higher benefit limits of $195,000 for 2009 (up from $185,000 in 2008); contributions made by the employ-
er are considered a taxdeductible business expense; and employee benefits are fixed to provide lifetime payouts. For those owning a business with fewer than 100 employees you may want to consider the Savings Incentive Match Plan for Employees (SIMPLE) IRA. This type of plan is relatively easy for companies to both establish and administer, with no complicated reporting requirements. SIMPLE IRAs allow individuals to decide how much they wish to contribute, and how money is dispersed among investments. For 2009, employees could defer up to $11,500 or 100 percent of their compensation – whichever is less – along with a $2,500 “catch-up” contribution available to those employees age 50 and over. Another valuable addition to an employee benefits package is the Simplified Employee Pension (SEP), which involves minimal paperwork and is funded through the employer. Established through an IRA, the employer can make tax-deductible contributions of up to 25 percent of earned income or $49,000 – whichever is less. The amount to be contributed each year is determined by the employer, as well as whether or not any contributions will be made. To the benefit of the employee, assets in the plan grow and compound on a tax-deferred basis, and contributions are immediately vest-
ed and can be withdrawn at any time. Separately, 401(k) plans have become a widely accepted retirement vehicle among small businesses. Employees are able to decide how much they wish to contribute from their paycheck on a pre-tax basis, while employers are entitled to a tax deduction on any match contributions made on behalf of the employee. Given the variety of retirement vehicles available and the importance of tailoring the right plan to meet your business needs, it’s important to seek the guidance of an investment professional. They can help weigh all options, and get you and your business headed on the right path. Health
By Dr. Peter Osborne
Addressing These Common but Overlooked Problems Can Help Repair Your Thyroid… Thyroid Disease and Dysfunction Classic signs of thyroid hormone deficiency include fatigue, memory loss, cold hands and feet, muscle and joint pain, depression, high cholesterol and constipation. Over the past several years, I have seen a large influx of patients that have been placed on thyroid hormones to treat the above symptoms. The problem with this approach is that it doesn’t actually address why the body is not making enough thyroid hormone in the first place. What you should know about Thyroid Hormone Production: Thyroid hormone production is under the influence of a chemical called thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). TSH is made by the pituitary gland. When circulating levels of thyroxine (T-4) are low, TSH sends a message to your thyroid gland to start producing more T-4. The building blocks your body uses to make T-4 come from food constituents that we obtain from the diet (tyrosine – an amino acid from protein and certain minerals – iodine, zinc, etc). Once your body makes T-4, it must be activated by other nutrients (vitamins and minerals) into something known as T-31. T-3 is the active form of thyroid hormone that works to increase the body’s metabolism. However, certain nutrient deficiencies and stress can lead to a reduction in T-3 and instead the production of Reverse T-3. This form of T-3 is not as effective and leads to symptoms of hypothyroidism. Unfortunately, Reverse T-3 cannot be distinguished from T-3 in traditional thyroid lab reports and this is a common over-
sight by many physicians. Once T-3 is made, it will attach to the nucleus inside your cells and increase the body’s metabolism appropriately. Once again, however, certain nutrient deficiencies can decrease the responsiveness of our body’s cells to T-3, causing symptoms of hypothyroidism. For these reasons lab reports commonly performed by physicians that look at TSH, T-4, and T-3, can be misleading. A simplified diagram of thyroid hormone production is listed below: TSH Stimulates the thyroid gland to make T-4 T-4 Converts to either T-3 or Reverse T-3 (RT3) RT3 is inactive. Normal T-3 attaches to the cell nucleus Once attachment of T-3 occurs the body’s metabolism increases Gluten Sensitivity and Thyroid Dysfunction Gluten sensitivity is a common cause of thyroid dysfunction. Gluten exposure can trigger an autoimmune reaction (Hashimoto’s disease) that disrupts normal thyroid hormone production. (For more on this visit www.GlutenFreeSociety.org) There are also many other environmental factors that can affect thyroid hormone production. Oral contraceptives and estrogen containing medications have been shown to reduce the conversion of T4 to T33. Many herbicides and pesticides contain estrogen mimicking compounds known to effect thyroid hormone production. Soy foods and sodas can cause a reduction in thyroid
hormone. Certain food allergies and selenium deficiency are linked to autoimmune thyroid dysfunction3,4. Heavy metal exposure through air, water, dental fillings etc. have been linked to poor thyroid function. Remember that thyroid disease is never just as simple as taking a medication whether it is bio-identical or not. Thyroid dysfunction has a cause. An astute physician will take an active roll in care and seek to perform a comprehensive exam and laboratory work up that will identify the cause. Keep in mind that your body has the ability to make its own thyroid hormone providing that all the essential nutrients necessary are present in the diet or through supplementation, providing that the environment is conducive to the expression of good health and providing that the individual is properly educated in the care of his/her body. Many patients that come to me initially are taking some form of thyroid medication. Many were instructed that the medication was a life long necessity. And in many, it is very common that the medication becomes unnecessary. Moncayo R, et al. We understand that there are two main reasons why patients visit a dermatologist. The first reason is to treat a problem and the second reason is to look and feel better about you and your hair, skin or nails. We also understand that with so many choices and claims of “miracle fixes”, addressing your concerns can be overwhelming, to say the least. It is our job to guide you through the process of addressing your concerns – medical, cosmetic or all the in-betweens.

High School HOT SHOT Scout’s Honor
A
s Matthew Scribe graduates from Austin High School this year, he has much to be proud of. At just 18 years old, Matthew has a long list of accomplishments including earning his Eagle Scout. Matthew has been involved with the Boy Scouts of America since the first grade. Starting as a Tiger Cub, Matthew knows that obtaining his Eagle Scout is a “great achievement.” “I’ve been involved with Scouts for practically my entire life,” Matthew said. “To be awarded the highest rank in Scouting was something that I take great pride in.” As part of the requirements for the rank of Eagle Scout, Matthew had to plan and complete a community service project. He chose to work with Gracewood Ministries, a nonprofit that serves singleparent families at risk of homelessness. “For my Eagle Scout Project, I worked with Gracewood Ministries to build a 12 foot by 12 foot gazebo for them to protect their recreation equipment for the children,” Matthew said. Matthew spent approximately eight months developing plans and raising almost $1,000 to buy materials. “Over two weekends I worked with my friends and fellow scouts on construction,” Matthew said. “The only wrinkle was that Hurricane Ike made landfall during my planned second weekend, so my project was pushed back a week and we wound up running our power tools off of generators. All in all, it went great.” Matthew plans to continue scouting as he travels to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico as an adult leader this summer. However, Matthew’s dedication to community service does not stop with Scouting. Matthew has also volunteered for the past seven years for the Lone Star Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society raising money through the MS 150. “I rode in my first MS 150 when I was ten years old and in the fourth grade with my mom,” Matthew said. “I really enjoy
making a difference and fundraising … so much so that for the past few years I have been a ‘superstar’ fundraiser for raising over $1,000 for each ride.” This year, Matthew says he had a great ride. “We really lucked out with the weather, because on both days it stopped raining just as we were about to start riding for the day,” Matthew said. “Of course, on Sunday I did get poured on while waiting at the start line, but it’s all part of the experience. It was a great ride, and I especially enjoy the last few miles as you ride into Austin, because the finish line is right in front of the State Capitol.” Matthew’s volunteer work has not gone unnoticed. The Fort Bend Optimist Club recently honored him with an Outstanding Community Service Award for his commitment to community service. In addition to volunteering, Matthew is also an accomplished student. He has been named a National Merit Finalist, in which he feels honored to be recognized. He also serves as president of Austin High School’s National Honor Society and as an event chair for the school’s debate team. In the fall, Matthew will attend Texas A&M University to study mechanical engineering. He hopes to one day work in the defense or aerospace industries. H

Sartartia Shines: Lora Bothell FBISD Secondary Teacher of the Year 2010
FBISD Teacher of the Year is the highest honor that FBISD can bestow upon a teacher. Facilitated by the Texas Education Agency, the FBISD Teacher of the Year Lora Bothell Program annually recognizes and rewards teachers who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and excellence in teaching. Lora Bothell of Sartartia Middle School was named 2010 FBISD Secondary Teacher of the Year at a special awards dinner on April 29. Lora Bothell has 18 years of teaching experience and teaches special education for grades sixth through eighth. Her enthusiasm for her work is contagious, and she believes teachers change lives every day in their classrooms. She was inspired by her second-grade teacher who changed her perspective on life and helped her decide to become a teacher. Bothell believes that teachers have the power to give children hope, confidence and a desire to relentlessly pursue their dreams. Bothell received her Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood from the University of Houston - Clear Lake, and her Master of Education in Educational Administration from Concordia University - Texas. As TOY, she will receive a special Teacher of the Year ring and a complimentary photograph by Steven Leonard, both sponsored by Balfour. In addition, The Fort Bend Education Foundation generously donated a Dell laptop computer to the TOY winner. Mrs. Bothell will become a spokesperson for public education. The FBISD Teacher of the Year, a dedicated and highly skilled candidate who is capable of inspiring students of all backgrounds and abilities to learn, also becomes a candidate for Texas Teacher of the Year honors. We wish Mrs. Bothell luck in this competition.

K
ate (Catherine Keener) has a lot on her mind. There’s the ethics problem of buying furniture at the cheap estate sales and marking it up at her trendy Manhattan store (and how much markup can she get away with?). There’s the materialism problem of not wanting her teenage daughter (Sarah Steele) to want the expensive things that Kate wants. There’s the marriage problem of sharing a partnership in parenting, business and life with her husband Alex (Oliver Platt) but sensing doubt nibbling at the foundations. And there’s Kate’s free-floating 21st century malaise—the problem of how to live well and be a good person when poverty, homelessness, and sadness are always right outside the door. Plus, there’s the neighbors: cranky, elderly Andra (Ann Guilbert) and the two granddaughters who look after her (Rebecca Hall and Amanda Peet). As Kate, Alex and Abby interact with the people next door, with each other and with their New York surroundings, a complex mix of animosity, friendship, deception, guilt, and love plays out with both sharp humor and pathos. Please Give is writer/director Nicole Holofcener’s perceptive—and devastatingly funny—take on modern life’s contradictions, good intentions and shaky moral bearings. At first glimpse, the entire character base for Please Give is completely unremarkable - bland, if you will. The film is completely disarming in this manner until you realize about half way through the film, that was the intent of the director, Nicole Holofcener. The performance of Catherine Keener is impeccable as she shows complete discomfort in every situation. In one particular scene as she is walking home with her husband after dinner, she sees a man standing against the wall outside the restaurant. She offers up her left overs to the gentleman asking if he is hungry. He tartily replied, “I am waiting for a table.” At that moment I knew that Keener was perfect for this role. Nobody else I could think of could convey that level of discomfort, let alone me feel like I just slapped a child - and all I did was watch the film. The rest of the cast performances are impeccable as well, particularly Oliver Platt. Always a scene stealer and comedienne, Platt this time blends in and is perfect as the sad-sack husband. The film has a

message that isn’t soon forgotten. What is it about materialism that determines our happiness and self worth and should we experience guilt for being successful? Not for the faint of heart, this film will definitely make you think and reevaluate your priorities. Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital
Caring for the Community Is it ADHD or a sleep disorder?
I
f your child has been diagnosed with attentiondeficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), it might be worth looking at sleep patterns as a source of the problem. That’s because researchers have linked insufficient sleep in children to problems with concentration, behavior and school work. “Anything that causes sleep disruption or inadequate sleep can present as behavioral problems during the day,” said Colleen Lance, M.D. She is board certified in sleep medicine and serves as medical director of the Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Sleep Disorders Center. Most children do not get the recommended amounts of sleep – 10 to 12 hours for elementary and middle school students, and eight to nine hours for high school students. For optimum alertness, experts advise keeping a consistent bedtime, even on non-school nights. Because children become hyperactive when they don’t get enough sleep, Dr. Lance suggests that parents and physicians examine a child’s sleep history before accepting a diagnosis of ADHD. “Is there snoring? Are there leg movements? Is it difficult to get to sleep or stay asleep? Are they sleepwalking?”
Making the link Dr. Lance said the connection between obstructive sleep apnea and behavioral issues is well established in medical literature. “After removing the enlarged tonsils and adenoids in these children, we can either reduce or eliminate their need for daytime stimulants,” said the sleep specialist, whose Advertorial

When is a sleep study necessary?
patients range from premature babies to adults. Other sleep disorders, like restless leg syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder, have a biochemical basis. Higher levels of Dr. Colleen Lance ferritin – a protein that stores and releases iron in our bodies – are required to make dopamine, a neurochemical that helps control these conditions. “A lab report might indicate normal levels of ferritin for making blood, but it may not be high enough to keep your legs from moving,” said Dr. Lance, who often educates primary care physicians on this matter since sleep medicine is fort bend

If parents observe their child snoring or making rhythmic arm or leg movements while sleeping, Dr. Lance suggests they speak with their pediatrician or make an appointment with her. If an underlying disorder is suspected, a sleep study may be ordered. Other problems may include delayed sleep phase syndrome, in which the sleep/wake cycle is shifted forward, a common problem in teens. This disorder does not require a sleep study. However, because the most successful treatment takes many months to implement, Dr. Lance suggests scheduling an appointment early in the summer to maximize improvement before the new school year begins. The Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Sleep Disorders Center conducts testing for the full spectrum of sleep disorders. It is open around-the-clock, Monday through Saturday, making it easy to schedule appointments that coincide with a patient’s normal sleep/ wake cycle. If symptoms of a sleep disorder are present, speak with your primary care physician or call the Memorial Hermann Sleep Disorders Center at 281.725.5930. H

100 Years Anniversary
A Look at Downtown Rosenberg:
Glancing back a Century By Sharon K. Wallingford
C
onstructed in 1910 and located in the 1900 block of Avenue G and Second Street in downtown Rosenberg, stands a two-story brick building where the doors to business remain open after a century of trading with area residents. This building stands two blocks from where the original railroad depot and Harvey House once stood in the heart of the city’s historical district. The Carter home (1902) was around the corner and Hawkins Furniture and Brazos River Provisions were located at each end of the sidewalk. Today, the lacy window dressings welcome visitors back to a period of time when the men folk tipped their hats at the ladies and mingled on the crowded street corners to discuss the latest cotton, sugar cane and rice prices. Meanwhile, the women shopped for their weekly supplies and chatted about their gardens. In 1919, L. A. Vogelsang leased the buildings from Jacob Gray for $1,200 a year. Ten years later, Vogelsang purchased the buildings and renamed them the L. A. Vogelsang General Merchandise Buildings to identify the store he operated. Mary, his wife, joined him behind the counter and served many a customer. The couple served Hires root beer from a 55-gallon barrel to thirsty customers and their children. During this time, the Ebell family had purchased the Carter home.
The Vogelsang buildings yesterday and today.
People visiting could get a room at the Ebell Hotel for $2 per day. If the visitors were thirsty for fine wines and liquors, they could visit the Silver King Saloon located across the street from the depot. The Cumings Drug Store on the corner of Avenue F and Third could fill prescriptions, sell mattresses and even supply wood coffins. Cochran Brothers offered the latest in gasoline stoves for the kitchen and the most improved farming equipment. Local attorney and former county judge F.X. Joerger kept his office overhead. While women shopped for their families at the Vogelsang Store, men often gathered around the wood burning stove to discuss business. For many years, Vogelsang’s General Merchandise Store flourished. Community dances were held upstairs on weekends, where “Main Street Marketplace” is now located. Many of the popular bands and orfort bend

chestras would keep couples dancing until the early hours of the morning. The men wore suits, and the ladies dressed up, many in evening gowns. Guests arrived from Schulenberg, LaGrange, Wallis, East Bernard, Needville and other nearby towns by train to attend the dances. Others would arrive by horseback, wagon or buggy. The buildings red brick facades are among the most recognizable in the city. Early photographs depict a broad canopy, typical of the period that covered the sidewalk and protected pedestrians in bad weather. An active rail schedule brought both supplies and shoppers to the busy, mud-dried, buggy-lined streets that by 1880 were known as the Rosenberg Junction, in honor of Henry Von Rosenberg, president of the GC & Santa Fe Railroad and a prominent resident of Galveston. The property is located on the
Henry Scott league on which the City of Rosenberg was planned and built. Scott, a colonist, was introduced to the Texas saddlehigh grass wilderness by Impresario Stephen F. Austin, known as the “Father of Texas.” Austin was the original owner of this league of land. Browsing through photographs and newsprint, it is noted that on a sunny day in 1911, William Jennings Bryan, an orator and statesman, stood on a flag-draped platform in front of the Vogelsang buildings and spoke to a group of more than a 100 men and women and their families. Often, puppeteers or people selling their wares would gather on the sidewalks and collect an audience outside the buildings. Other photographs captured the times when Vogelsang added other business ventures such as a cafe and beer tavern downstairs. With the discovery of oil in 1920, Rosenberg became a boomtown and became known as the “Melting Pot of Fort Bend County.” By the 1950s, thanks to the government’s infrastructure developments after World War II, the city was tagged “The Hub of the Gulf Coast.” Robert “Bob” L. Vogelsang, the grandson of L. A. and Mary Vogelsang, and his wife Marcia, are hopeful this year’s 100th birthday celebration of the buildings will become the catalyst to revitalize downtown Rosenberg. Historical plaques on the Vogelsang buildings depict national and state recognition. New sidewalks, landscaping and lighting, brings new hope. The railroad depot was demolished a decade ago, and in its place stands a railroad museum that brings railroad buffs from all over America and the world to Rosenberg’s doorstep. Ms. Vogelsang promotes the downtown area along with other merchants in a formalized downtown association. “We visited Grandmother Vogelsang frequently, and when she moved to Brownsville to live with her son, we purchased her home on Second Street and began updating it. We moved to Rosenberg in 1979 and this has been our primary residence ever since.” Bob, an engineer and entrepreneur, created, owned and operated a number of telecommunication businesses throughout the years. Through his work, he has traveled to many parts of America, the Middle East, Europe and South America. He currently works as a consultant for several companies. In addition, he is

Although Marcia has retired from her education administrative positions and associations with four school districts, she continues to serve as a consultant and leadership coach for administrators in Texas and other American school districts. Today, she also coordinates a team of dealers that manage The Vogelsang Antique Emporium located in the historic buildings. Over the years, the Vogelsangs have been active in various community activities, which include the Fort Bend County Museum, the Rosenberg Railroad Museum, Youth Opportunities Unlimited, the WCJC Fort Bend Technical Center, and the TW Davis YMCA. “These buildings were the last in a series of three two-story buildings built,” adds Bob. “The architecture is typical of its day.” In 1989, Bob brought the Cast Theatrical Company to the buildings. opened its doors to introduce Community Theater to West Fort Bend County. Today, the buildings house the theater, Brazos River Provisions, a jelly factory producing gourmet jellies and coffees and Candles by Jade, where scented candles are hand poured and gift boxed for shipping. The Dance Train offers dance lessons for individuals and groups. Also, Heritage Hall is an event center perfect for catered dinner and small events. Donna’s Place, a restaurant, is scheduled to open soon. Bob continues to provide office space to Broadband Properties and a magazine production company. A community event to celebrate the first 100 years and the economic gains the downtown area has provided to the city is planned for June 5. “We’ll have activities to remember the past and present,” says Bob and Marcia, as they prepare their lists for food vendors, bands and other activities. A community photo is planned, and there will be a re-enactment of a “Buster Brown Show” at 9 a.m. At 10 a.m., the store will open to showcase vintage piano music, storyboards and old newspaper clippings. Donna’s Place will offer Czech, German, Polish and Italian lunch specials. At 6:30 p.m., the Blue Note Brothers of Orchard will entertain with the rhythms from the past. H

Sienna Branch Library Now Open! The grand-opening ceremony of Fort Bend County Libraries’ Sienna Branch Library took place on Saturday, April 24, at the new library, located at 8411 Sienna Springs Blvd. in Missouri City. The library is a joint project between Fort Bend County and Houston Community College. The library enjoyed a very successful grand-opening ceremony, attended by approximately 450 people. After the ceremony, patrons participated in tours of the new facility and watched demonstrations of its resources. Library staff issued 149 library cards to new library patrons that day, and 2,785 items were checked out, a majority of which were checked out from self-check machines using the RFID technology. Located at 8411 Sienna Springs Boulevard, the library sits on a 4.5-acre site adjacent to the new Houston Community College campus which opened last fall. The new library, designed by Stoa/Golemon/Bolullo Architects, is a two-story building, with 44,989 square feet, making it the second largest library in the system. The library was designed to be familyfriendly, with individual areas for children, teens and adults. The general library areas on the first and second floors are enhanced by natural light from a series of glazed windows framing spectacular views of the neighborhood and community college. The hours of operation will be as follows: Monday-Thursday, 7:30 am - 9:00 pm; Friday, 7:30 am - 5:00 pm; and Saturday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. The library will be closed on Sundays. The Fort Bend Junior Service League (FBJSL) is pleased to announce that Shayne Newell has been named the 2009 - 2010 Volunteer of the Year. Shayne has been a member of the League since 2004, and in that time has served on multiple placements and committees within the organization. This past year, she served on the Advisory Council and co-chaired the committee that launched the League’s award-winning cookbook, Treasures from the Bend, Rich in History and Flavor, in the fall. This past month, she was named as a co-chair for the League’s 2011 Charity Ball, where she will be turning her attention towards planning a fabulous “Vintage Vegas” themed event which will celebrate FBJSL’s 10-year anniversary next March. For years, Shayne has exemplified the role of a leader by supporting each of the League’s fundraising efforts and service projects. Whether organizing an auction, taking photos or planting trees, Shayne is always there to show her support and dedication to the League. Many of Shayne’s family and friends surprised her at the League’s May meeting to share in the celebration of her commitment and service to the Fort Bend community.

Diane and Jim Box at 2010 OakBend Volunteer Appreciation Brunch
J
im Box has been actively involved with the Volunteer Auxiliary of OakBend Medical Center for the past 7 years, accumulating over 4,700 hours of volunteer service. Among his diverse responsibilities, Jim functions as bookkeeper for the volunteer, run gift shop, serves as a courier, transports patients, delivers newspapers and assists staff with errands and special projects within the hospital. “The volunteers are a very important part of the team at OakBend, and Jim’s helpful nature and kindness are a great representation of the volunteers we have here. We appreciate their efforts very much,” said Chief Executive Officer, Joe Freudenberger. Jim is married to Diane Box, who is also a volunteer at OakBend Medical Center. Jim served in the US Army for 21 years, and then worked for Frito Lay, and Makita
Power Tools, prior to his retirement, and taking on the role of volunteer. Jim volunteers with a smile and always projects a helpful, positive attitude. He earned the Volunteer of The Year award at the OakBend’s 2010 Volunteer Appreciation Brunch. “It was my honor to present Jim Box with the Volunteer of the Year award. We all enjoy working with him,” commented Goldie Leinweber, Volunteer Auxiliary President. Patients, other volunteers and staff all appreciate Jim’s volunteer efforts and enthusiasm. “Without Jim’s attention to detail and accounting skills, it would be much harder for me to do all that is needed to keep the gift shop running smoothly.” said Carolyn Todish, Gift Shop Chairperson. “In addition to his normal weekly volunteer duties at the hospital, Jim is always willing to take on additional responsibilities such as helping with wheelchair control and repair, setting up for special events -- or anything else that might be needed,” said Cindy Reaves of OakBend Medical Center. “That’s why he’s our Volunteer of the Year!” If you are interested in volunteering for OakBend Medical Center, call 281-633-4015; someone from Volunteer Recruitment will be happy to assist you. Industrial Info Resources Team tours Chilean Copper Mine
(L-R) Employees from Sugar Land-based Industrial Info Resources (IIR) recently traveled to Santiago, Chile to participate in Expomin, the world’s largest industrial mining conference. While there, they toured the world’s largest copper mine El Teniente. IIR employees participating in the tour include Mariano Forner, Romulo Giraudo (Codelco - Public Relations), Veronica Moroni, Joseph Govreau, Natalia Tolossa, and Daryl Street.
Employees from Sugar Land-based Industrial Info Resources (IIR) recently traveled to Chile to participate in Expomin, Latin America’s largest industrial mining convention. While there, they were invited by Codelco, the world’s largest copper producer, to tour El Teniente Copper Mine, located outside of Santiago, Chile. “Touring the mine allowed us to connect with people and gain insight into what it takes to operate the largest underground mine in the world,” said Joe Govreau, vice president of Metals & Minerals Research at IIR. “This experience enhances the insights we provide in a way that research alone cannot.” El Teniente, the largest underground mine in the world, has 3,000 kilometers of underground tunnels. The mine employs 15,000 people. El Teniente briefly interrupted production in late February after power to the mine was cut following the earthquake in Chile. The mine processes on average 140,000 tons of copper and molybdenum ore per day. The Expomin convention, held April 12-16, drew an estimated 65,000 attendees from around the world. IIR has offices worldwide, on five continents including headquarters in Sugar Land Town Square and Cordoba, Argentina in Latin America. These offices provide research and information on industries such as electric power, alternative fuels, petroleum refining, chemical processing, metals and minerals, pharmaceuticals and biotech. Industrial Info Resources (IIR) is the leading provider of global market intelligence specializing in the industrial process, heavy manufacturing and energy markets. IIR’s quality-assurance philosophy, the Living Forward Reporting Principle™, provides upto-the-minute intelligence on what’s happening now, while constantly keeping track of future opportunities. H

A Cultural Renaissance Rediscover a lost artistic and cultural heritage as the New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts offers an exhilarating production that celebrates the excellence and grandeur of classical Chinese dance and music. The show weaves wondrous stories of heavenly realms with enchanting dreams and the classic struggle between good and evil. The show’s breathtaking pageantry evokes themes of virtue, compassion, and courage, which have been at the heart of traditional Chinese culture since antiquity. Shen Yun will be performing in Houston as part of a global tour of over 100 cities with 300 shows. “I just felt it was a complete edifying experience of the human spirit,” said Omega Medina, the former senior manager for the Grammy Awards. “I just feel blessed having been exposed to this level, this caliber of performance.” Unique to the production is the Shen Yun Performing Arts Orchestra. Using Western orchestrations combined with profoundly expressive classical Chinese instruments, the orchestra creates a new color in music. The pipa (a pear-shaped lute), the dizi (a Chinese bamboo flute), Chinese percussion instruments, and the erhu (a two-stringed Chinese violin) all sing along with classical Western instruments. The end result is a perfect vehicle for expressing the diverse and rich traditional Chinese culture. “Absolutely magical,” said Christine Walevska, a renowned cello virtuoso. “You cannot describe it in words; it must be experienced.” Classical Chinese dance is very rich, diverse, and has deep inner meanings. It is very different from modern dance or ballet in both concept and form. There is a saying about classical Chinese dance: “The movement stops but not the expression.” It gives space for reminiscing and savoring what the dance is trying to convey. “No words can describe the whole show. Amazing may be one way to describe it. It is so magnificent. I have never watched such wonderful dance in my life! It’s hard to describe. Perfection may be the right word,” remarked Mieke Bouve, a Belgian actress. For more information please visit: www.ShenYunPerformingArts.org

M edical F ocus MD Anderson Offers New Approach to Lung Cancer Treatment in Sugar Land The American Cancer Society estimates that there were 219,440 new cases of lung cancer in 2009, accounting for about 15 percent of cancer diagnoses. At the MD Anderson Regional Care Center in Sugar Land, assistant professor of radiation oncology Isidora Arzu, M.D., Ph.D. and her team are using stereotactic radiosurgery, a type of external radiation therapy, to care for certain lung cancer patients. The ideal candidates for lung stereotactic radiosurgery have relatively small tumors on the periphery of the lung, and may be less-suitable for surgery based on a number of factors. With stereotactic radiosurgery, the patient receives a high dose of very targeted radiation therapy per treatment, reducing the overall length

of treatment from seven weeks to one or two weeks. “The advantage of stereotactic radiosurgery is that we can truly target the tumor while sparing the rest of the lung,” said Dr. Arzu. “Because we are providing a higher dose of radiation per day, patients can quickly finish their treatment and go about living their lives.” Daily CT scans are also performed to ensure the radiation is focused only on the lung tumor. “The CT allow us the precision to focus on small areas within the
lungs, which is very important because patients ideally suited for this treatment already have damaged lung tissue,” said Dr. Arzu. “The scans help to ensure that we are sparing healthy lung tissue.” The MD Anderson Sugar Land facility is located on the campus of St. Luke’s Sugar Land Hospital and offers radiation oncology, medical oncology, outpatient chemotherapy, diagnostic, laboratory and pharmacy services. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 281.566.1800 or visit mdanderson.org/sugarland. H

To expedite surgical and non-surgical care for patients with back and neck pain, Methodist Sugar Land Hospital opened its new Spine Center May 3rd. The center will feature a unique spine care navigation service, designed to help patients receive the complete spine care they need from diagnosis and treatment through rehabilitation services — all in one convenient location. It’s not uncommon for people suffering with back and neck pain to try many kinds of treatment without real relief, and it can be frustrating to wait many weeks for an appointment with a specialist. At the core of Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Spine Center is a nurse practitioner or “navigator” who will help patients get going in the right direction. “We believe patients with back and neck pain should have the benefit of comprehensive care that includes easy access and a simple process from start to finish,” says Rajesh K. Bindal, M.D., board-certified neurosurgeon and medical director of the Spine Center. “Our innovative approach to care helps all patients — walk-ins and those with physician referrals — see the right specialist they need very quickly.” “Care is coordinated by a nurse navigator assigned to each patient who then assists the patient through the treatment process,” says Dr. Bindal. “The nurse schedules all appointments and continues to meet with the patient to discuss the treatment plan, answer questions and help educate the patient about his or her treatment and condition.” “The overall management of spine care includes imaging, diagnoses, pain management, physical and occupational therapy, and surgical procedures when necessary,” says Irfan Lalani, M.D., board-certified neurologist and pain specialist on staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “At the Spine Center, we will coordinate this care and be able to make the correct referral the first time due, in large part, to evidence-
based medicine.” Jeffrey Jackson, M.D., board-certified neurologist and chief of the Medical Staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, agrees. “This multidisciplinary approach means patients will receive the most appropriate treatment from the right specialty physician based on scientific research and proven treatment methods. Patients can be assured treatment will be of the highest possible quality and that it is provided as soon and as safely as possible,” Dr. Jackson says.
“Patients will be led through a process of assessment and treatment ranging from physical therapy to aggressive, non-surgical management, and if necessary, delicate spine surgery tailored to the patient’s unique condition,” says Jeffrey Wood, M.D., board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon with Methodist Orthopaedic Specialists of Texas. Through minimally invasive spine surgery, such spine conditions as degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, nerve compression, recurrent herniated discs and other trauma can be alleviated. “Our spine care patients also benefit from Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s sophisticated, diagnostic equipment and technology,” shares Dr. Wood. “For example, the industry’s most powerful whole body 3 Tesla MRI provides state-of-the-art image resolution while reducing exam times.” The new Spine Center is located on the Methodist Sugar Land Hospital campus with easy access off Town Center Boulevard. Patients with primary care physician referrals, as well as those without referrals, are welcome. For more information or to schedule an appointment at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Spine Center, please call 281-313-BACK (2225). H
What to Expect at Your Colonoscopy Mention the word “colonoscopy” in a group of people and you can literally see the cringing begin. You most likely have heard a story or two, whether you’ve experienced the procedure or not. However, the life-saving benefits of this screening test far outweigh its shortterm unpleasantries. Colorectal cancer is the third most-common cancer, but is highly treatable when caught early and even preventable with the removal of polyps. The colon, or large bowel, represents the end of the line of your digestive system or gastrointestinal tract. It is a hollow tube – about 5 feet long – that starts at the small intestine and ends at the rectum and anus. Its purpose is www.fortbend

to store unabsorbed food waste, water and other fluids until that waste can be eliminated from the body. “A colonoscopy is used to visually examine your entire colon and rectum for tissue abnormalities and polyps,” says Keith Fiman, M.D., board certified gastroenterologist on staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “Recommended at age 50 for people at average risk of developing colon cancer, this screening test should be given even earlier if you have a family history of colorectal cancer. It is also recommended that African Americans, even without a family history of colon cancer, receive screening tests at age 45.” Continued on page 92
M edical F ocus Continued from page 91 Your colon must be clear of stool and fluids prior to the colonoscopy for the physician to get a clear view of the colon and rectal lining. The prep requires that you take a laxative and are on a clear liquid diet the entire day before the exam. You will need to stop taking iron pills and medications containing iron, since this mineral can change the color of your colon lining. Red liquids also need to be avoided. Often considered the worst part of the entire procedure, keep in mind that this prep improves the accuracy of your colonoscopy. On the examination day, you will be asked to fast during the four to six hours prior to the procedure. “If you are diabetic or use blood thinners, including aspirin or other pain relievers, your preparation procedure may vary,” says Dr. Fiman. “Your physician will give you additional instructions.” After check-in, you will be taken to the procedure area where a nurse will prepare you for the colonoscopy. Since the procedure may cause some patients anxiety and pain, a mild sedative and/or pain medication is administered through an IV. This helps to minimize discomfort. Most patients are awake during the procedure and can watch it on a computer screen. You will lie on your left side as the colonoscope is inserted – a long, flexible tube with a fiber-optic light and a tiny video camera at its tip – into your rectum. “Air is used to inflate the colon to help provide a better view,” says Dr. Fiman. “You may feel some abdominal cramping or pressure during this time.” Due to the medication given during the procedure, you must have a responsible adult drive you home. Following the procedure, you will be taken to a recovery area where a nurse will continue to check your vital signs. If you still feel bloated, passing gas will make you feel more comfortable. You are not allowed to work or drive for the remainder of the day, and you are encouraged to resume a regular diet unless advised otherwise. Complications are rare, but see your

doctor if you have persistent abdominal pain, bleeding or a fever. “If no abnormalities are found, your next colonoscopy is usually recommended in 10 years,” says Dr. Fiman. “If polyps were removed – depending on their size and number – a more frequent screening schedule will be followed.” Free Seminar and At-Home Screening Kit Join us on Tuesday, June 22, for a free Colorectal Cancer Awareness Seminar presented by Dr. Keith Fiman and Dr. T. Bartley Pickron. Attendees will receive a free colorectal screening kit to take home. The presentation starts at 6:30 p.m. and will be held in Conference Rooms A-D at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. Seating is limited. Reserve your seats now by calling 281-274-7500. H

Join Fort Bend County Libraries’ 2010 Texas Summer Reading Club for Children Registration for the 2010 Texas Summer Reading Club (SRC) will begin on Tuesday, June 1, and continue through July 31, at all Fort Bend County Libraries (FBCL) locations. Children from infancy to early teens are invited to come to the library to read a lot of great books, see some exciting programs and join in some fun activities to kick off a great summer! This year marks the 52nd Anniversary of the Texas Summer Reading Club for children. The theme for this year is “Catch the Reading Express!” Children are encouraged to read as many books as they can and they will earn rewards based on the total number they read or have read to them, or on the total number of hours they spend reading. Participants may register at any Fort Bend County library, or they may register online at http://www.fortbend. lib.tx.us and click on the “Youth SRC Sign-Up” image, which will become available June 1. Upon registering, participants will then have their own online page on which to record their books. Reading rewards can be redeemed beginning Monday, June 7. Young patrons are also invited to register to win plush book-characters that will be given away in weekly drawings. In addition, the names of participants will be entered into a drawing for gift cards from area stores -- donated by the library Friends organizations -- that will be awarded to several lucky readers of 20 books or more, in a drawing scheduled in August at each library location. There is no charge to join the Summer Reading Club, and it is open to all children, regardless of the county of residence. The program is sponsored by the Texas State Library, Fort Bend County Libraries, and the Friends organizations that support the county library system. For more information, call the library’s Public Information Office at 281-341-2677 or the library branch nearest you.
Get ready for Impact A Hero weekend “In five years, Impact a Hero weekend donations have exceeded $2.7 million,” said Jim Hoelker, Chairman of the Board for Impact A Hero. “We’ve got some generous Texans who love their military,” he said. Hoelker said, “We have helped over 2,500 veterans and their families in the last five years. We focus on severely wounded veterans coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan. Forty-eight percent are 24 or younger. We’re talking severely wounded,” he added. “Thanks to advanced medical technology, veterans who may have died in earlier combat now come home missing arms or legs or are severely burned. They spend 12 to 18 months in a hospital because of severe injuries. Brooke Medical Center (in San Antonio) is among the best in the nation to serve severely wounded.” “The wounds are a lifelong process to heal. The biggest need is a continuation of welcoming home our wounded veterans,” Hoelker said. “We have an all-volunteer military. They need to know we

Changes are Coming
T
here’s change coming....and I have to tell you I am not happy at all about it. In fact, I’m a little scared. Scared more for my children really than myself, and it is a kind of fear that is gnawing at me. It all started a few weeks ago when I saw on This Sunday Morning a report on animals that are rare or now, extinct. The photographer, Joel Satore, had just released a book entitled Rare. The Columbian Basin Pigmy Rabbit, the Wyoming Toad, the Grizzly Bear, the Whooping Crane, the Mexican Grey Wolf and the Red Wolf, just to mention a few. All of them are now gone, or very soon to be. I immediately thought about our trip to New York, and the day we went to The Museum of Natural Science. I had some heavy questions to answer from a very inquisitive James Edward who had just discovered the dinosaur exhibits. “Why are they gone?” and “How did that happen?” These were just a few of the in depth questions that I could see would lead to exhausting all of my knowledge of the hows and whys of animal extinction. Those thought-provoking questions made me think of these other animals now facing extinction. Animals less fearsome, perhaps, than dinosaurs, and I began to feel a great sadness about the whole thing....that of extinction. It got me thinking about a lot of things. Conservation was one, and becoming “greener” in the way I was raising my children. Then, the 40th anniversary of Earth Day came, and with it washed ashore a baby whale whose belly was filled with items carelessly discarded. I was bothered especially by this news, and with it brought another set of questions from both of my children. It was obvious to me
that we, as a family, were going to reset our game plan for how we consumed and disposed of our daily living. I was feeling pretty good about our plans for change with summer fast approaching and both children very anxious to make sure we were doing our part. I was feeling just fine, until the oil spill.... I am no rocket scientist, but there’s just not a lot of messing around with safety when dealing with, essentially, the earth’s crust! Haven’t these people watched the Beverly Hillbillies? That crude came up in a roar and showered down a mess of mucky grossness that even television portrayed clearly. The latest disaster pales in comparison to all others by what it’s doing to our beaches and wildlife. The bayous and beaches of Louisiana are home to a whopping 40% of all of the coastal wetlands in the continental U.S.! I am not telling you anything you haven’t already read or watched on television. I’m just angry about it - really, really angry. After researching this massive disaster that will have a lasting impact on our environment for years to come, I feel compelled to share with you what I have discovered. Time magazine reported that, “It’s only in the Gulf of Mexico, whose waters yield nearly a third of U.S.-produced oil, and resource rich Alaska that a moratorium on off-shore drilling has never been considered. The results have been an outsourcing of America’s off shoring to countries like Kazakhstan and Angola, which are rapidly becoming the world’s new oil powers. Their fields may hold billions of barrels of petroleum, but their environmental standards are nonexistent. Nigeria - a petro-state that produces more than 2 million barrels of oil a day, has spills equal to that of the Exxon Valdez about every year. fort bend

New America’s Margonelli states: There’s a huge mass of consumers in the U.S. who just want oil to be cheap and don’t want to think about the externalities. And who don’t care about oil spills on the west coast of Africa.” (Time, May 17, 2010, “The Meaning of the Mess” by Bryan Walsh) Well, I care! And I think if everyone were to actually become aware of the situation, they would care more too. I am sickened by the ramifications of such carelessness on our wildlife, and on the livelihoods of so many fishermen. The birds and turtles are coming up covered in a gross, reddish muck. In addition, there will be a lot missing from our beaches and our dinner plates for many years to come. One very special act of nature may never ever happen again - that of a rare occurrence called a jubilee. Fishery experts say it’s not uncommon for shallow bays to have oxygen deprivation, known as ‘hypoxic events,’ for short periods of time that bring some fish to the surface. Experts say the combination of factors in Mobile Bay that sends thousands of fish and crustaceans to the shore all at once -- and that the critters are all alive -- is unique to the area. At 74, Doris is known as the Jubilee Watcher of Point Clear. With the oil slick in the Gulf, Doris and other locals are wondering about the fate of jubilees. Even if the slick misses Mobile Bay, will the ‘jubilee’ seafood be safe to eat? What will happen if the crabs, flounder, and others rise to the surface in thick black crude? “The stench of the seafood will be a horrible thing,” Doris says. “Stop to think about thousands and thousands and thousands of crabs, fish, porpoises and sharks, all coming to shore dead.” Doris has a unique idea on how to plug the oil well that has leaked 210,000 gallons of crude a day into the Gulf. Her plan involves BP executives. “Bunch them up and stick them in that great big hole that they’re trying to stop up. Excuse my being ugly,” she says in a Southern drawl, “but that’s what I think about them.” (“Oil threatens Alabama’s jolly good time”, May 17, 2010 by Wayne Drash) I am right there with her! And so, it has come full circle. There’s lots of change coming, and I’m a little scared. We should feel responsible to our earth and all its living creatures. I have a new respect for dinosaurs and baby whales and boy am I going to really miss my oysters and my shrimp! More importantly, it’s insane to think we can waste our natural resources and watch calmly as animals one by one disappear. We are, after all, animals too. Things are changing, and it should make us all very nervous. Take Care of You!
