Texas Direct Auto Partners with “Lunches of Love” Texas Direct Auto, the nations largest independent car dealership, will participate this summer in “Lunches of Love,” a community outreach program which provides lunches to low income children in the Richmond Rosenberg area. “When we learned about the care and hope that ‘Lunches of Love’ and it’s volunteers provide these children, we were committed instantly to supporting the program,” said Jessica DeMarr, Director of Business Development for Texas Direct Auto. “Lunches of Love is very blessed and excited to have the opportunity to partner with Texas Direct Auto. Their bighearted donation is approximately 25% of our annual budge. This to me is phenomenal!”, said Adriane Gray with “Lunches of Love.” “Lunches of Love,” developed in 2009 by First United Methodist Church in Rosenberg, provides a nutritious sack lunch to low income elementary children and their siblings during the long breaks from school. With a large percentage of the children in this area on free and reduced lunches at school, most of the children would go hungry during extended holidays when these services are not available. “Lunches of Love” is committed to helping end the hunger of these children by operating Monday through Friday during Christmas Break, Spring Break, and Summer vacation. “Lunches of Love” currently provides service to children
at two local elementary schools and plans to expand to more elementary schools as funding allows. Volunteers can assist in many ways such as collecting food, assembling the lunches, and delivering. The sack lunches cost less than $0.65 per lunch and consists of a main entrée (sandwich, hot dog, or wrap), Goldfish, crackers or pretzels, fruit, yogurt or jello and water or juice. Texas Direct Auto will participate by providing the lunches for all 762 children for the entire month of June for a total of 14,478 lunches. “Their kindness and generosity will help the program continue feeding these children in need,” said Gray. This wonderful ministry has enriched many lives of the students and families they have helped as well as all of the volunteers it takes to run the program. or two Sugar Land doctors – both dads, and now, one a granddad – it’s all about family. With a practice in family medicine focusing on preventative medicine and health maintenance, Dr. Alan J. Reichman and Dr. Abraham K. Peringol are family-oriented doctors in the business of helping patients live healthier and longer lives – all while raising children, coaching flag football, volunteering for community organizations and hitting the ballroom dance floor. Drs. Reichman and Peringol are family men making a difference at Sugar Land Medical Associates.

G
rowing up surrounded by doctors was a major factor in Dr. Reichman’s decision to practice family medicine. His father was a family practitioner as well as three uncles. Although his father never put pressure on him to become a doctor, “having a doctor in the house influenced me because of the environmental factors, so I think I always from a young age decided that was what I was going to do,” he said. He joined his father’s four-man practice in South Africa as the fifth man of the younger generation and practiced medicine there nine years before he immigrated to the United States. His family immigrated here 32 years ago. “We had three young children at that time.” The father of four grown children, Dr. Reichman said while growing up his children respected that he was a doctor, and like his father, Dr. Reichman didn’t try to influence or put pressure on them to become doctors. “They went their own way and did what they wanted to do.” His oldest son, Gavin Reichman, is an employee benefits broker with Pasadena Insurance Agency in Houston. His younger son, Trevor Reichman, is a musician as well as a writer for Planet Green. His daughter, Lauren, is a copywriter in advertising, and his stepdaughter, Ashley, teaches special education. He added, “Enjoy every minute of every day with your children because they grow up so quickly.” Dr. Reichman is particularly passionate about lipidology and has been board certified in lipidology for about five years. Cholesterol problems are common and managing a patient’s cholesterol levels can be challenging. “We can do a lot for it, so that can be very satisfying,” he said. To stay fit, Dr. Reichman exercises often. He cycles on the weekend and walks for about 40 minutes to an hour two or three times a week. “I have a passion for tennis, and I play on a league once a week,” he said. In the past, he also ran in marathons. Another pastime is ballroom dancing which, he admits, is more of his wife’s passion,

It’s fun.” Keeping up with the latest medical information is important, so Dr. Reichman spends a great deal of time reading medical journals, especially on the subject of lipidology. He also enjoys reading Stephen King novels on the plane when he travels as well as historical novels and Dan Brown thrillers. Noting the trend toward preventive medicine, he said, “People now are coming in for routine physicals rather than only waiting until they are sick.
More and more people, often on the advice of their insurance company, are realizing that if you catch something early, it’s treatable, less dangerous and less costly rather than waiting for advanced cancers, strokes and heart attacks.” To give back to the community, he and his wife, Karen, trained through the TABC (Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission) to be certified bartenders. Now they enjoy volunteering at various fundraising galas including Fort Bend Boogie Night. ■ FBF

T
he oldest of three children, Dr. Peringol grew up with his father stressing graduate school or a post graduate program. An “uncle” who was a cardiologist allowed him to see what it meant to be a doctor – the personal satisfaction and benefit to the patient. At first, he wanted to be an orthopedic surgeon, but realized a surgical residency requires copious amounts of time. “Having more time, I get to be a volunteer faculty and preceptor in the residency and medical school programs. I teach the students what medicine is really about and help them to see how it is ever-changing.” He and wife, Siby, had a son as he started his residency. Limited hours with primary care appealed to the young father with a family. “The excitement of not knowing what’s going to be next was great, and the satisfaction of helping the patient at the same time and treating the family as a whole for the long-term was important. That’s the concept of continuity of care,” he said. Continuity of care and coming home and being able to see his own family and developing that relationship were the deciding factors for family medicine. “Living the life of a family practitioner, I can still be able to go home and not miss out on much, and I can be there for both Continued from page 15

Peringol and his wife, Siby, with their children Caleb and Alyssa. kids -- Caleb, 7, and Alyssa, 3.” “We want our kids to try different things,” said Dr. Peringol. “My son plays football, and I’m one of the coaches for his team. I enjoy helping my son learn about a sport, getting excited about it and coming home and working with him.” His favorite activity with Alyssa is imagination. “She’ll go in her play kitchen and cook. Later, she’ll play dress up. She mimics her brother some days, and we build on athletics. I like to take her shopping and give Mom a break. Siby is my rock.” Siby has two post graduate degrees, and has chosen to stay home for now to help raise the kids. In keeping with tradition, the Peringol’s follow the South Asian Indian custom where the wife’s new last name is the husband’s first name, hence Siby Abraham. The children’s last name is also Abraham, and they have their mother’s last name as well. The family attends Sugar Creek Baptist Church. “Our kids love going to church and are ecstatic about their Sunday School teachers.” He wants to instill in his children: “If you’re going to start something, don’t stop until you finish it. Try as hard as you can because it does get you somewhere. Strive to work hard. As long as they have their family and faith, that’s their foundation.” Both Dr. Peringol and Siby will speak to Caleb’s class on career day. Siby will fort bend

speak about her former career, while stressing that being a mom is a career as well. The children understand that it’s the doctor’s job to make you feel better. They are taught that every job is important and everyone should be treated with respect. “But when we go out, I’m Abe to everybody,” said Dr. Peringol. As a family practitioner and emergency room physician who also loves sports medicine, he emphasizes, “It’s just as important to get over a sickness as it is to stay healthy.” He wrote articles and did a weekly radio segment on primary care awareness and wellness. Dr. Peringol and Siby take their children to food drives not only to donate, but to let them see there are less fortunate people. “Serving those in need with a focus on children and primary care awareness are my passions,” he said. “We try to sit down at dinner every day and talk about our day and pray at bedtime. When doing things together as a family, we know that you tend to live longer, have better health, and better relationships.” Family medicine is truly a passion for both Dr. Reichman and Dr. Peringol. Together, they provide nearly 45 years of combined experience at Sugar Land Medical Associates. Planning Your Finances as a Couple
W
hile many married couples divide the household responsibilities, there’s one task that really needs the attention of both people – the investment planning. Managing your finances as a couple ensures that both partners have equal input on how money is being spent and invested. It also helps you protect each other – and your family – in an emergency. If something were to happen to your spouse, would you know where your family’s important financial records are kept? This question is particularly important for women. According to the National Center for Women and Retirement Research, women are 50 percent more likely than men to avoid making investment decisions for fear of making a mistake. The group also estimates that most women will be solely responsible for their own finances at some point during their lives – probably because of divorce or the death of a spouse. Tackling your finances together means making sure that both partners are on the same page. It may sound pretty basic, but start by talking about your cash flow. You should both know how much money is going out, and how much
is coming in. It’s also important to discuss what the family’s monthly expenses are. Next, look at your debt. If only one of you is making the financial decisions, the other person may not even know what you owe in debt. Break down the debt and look at ways to reduce it. This should be a top priority – especially if you have children. Do you want to leave them a nest egg, or a financial burden? One of the most crucial aspects of investment planning as a couple is making sure you both know where all of your important documents are located. While you may not want to think about the “what ifs,” not knowing where financial records are could cause a big headache if a crisis were to strike. Consider keeping your important financial and legal documents in a safety deposit box. You should also make sure that others, such as an attorney or your children, know where these documents are located. When you’re rounding up your important papers, it’s also worth the time to check all of your assets that require a beneficiary. Who are the beneficiaries of your life insurance policies or your retirement plans? Are these documents all up to date? Remember to review your wills
and trusts as well. If you don’t have a will, you should strongly consider getting one. While tackling your finances as a couple may bring up some tough questions, it should ultimately give you peace of mind. Even if one person in the household takes on the responsibility of saving, investing and paying the bills on a regular basis, both partners should feel better knowing that they understand the family’s overall financial situation, and that important financial decisions are being made together. Gluten? This Little Protein May be the Source of Your Chronic Health Problems… Many people today are going on gluten free diets. You can find extensive gluten free sections in Kroger, HEB, and Whole Foods. Gluten has been in the national spot light receiving recognition on Discovery Health, CNN’s Larry King, Oprah, David Letterman, The View, Good Housekeeping Magazine and more. There is even a “dummies book” available for those with gluten sensitivity.1 So What is Gluten? Gluten is a protein found in the following grains: wheat, barley, rye, and oats. It is also found in processed foods derived from wheat, barley, rye, and oats. Breads, cereals, and pastas are rich in gluten. Other foods and/or food additives can be derived from gluten containing grains. Examples include soy sauce, gravies, soups, whiskey, and modified food starch. Traditional medical thought is that the protein gluten interacts with some people’s immune systems causing an autoimmune reaction which damages the intestine. However, newer research is identifying that the protein gluten is only part of the problem. Some scientists argue that many grains (including corn) can create similar reactions. So what is gluten sensitivity? It depends on who you ask. Many people use the term gluten sensitivity interchangeably with celiac disease (an autoimmune intestinal disorder). Some call gluten sensitivity a food allergy or intolerance. The truth of the matter
is that gluten sensitivity is not a disease at all. Gluten sensitivity causes celiac disease, but not all people with gluten sensitivity develop celiac disease. This is where the problem in traditional diagnosis can occur. The only way to confirm whether or not a person has celiac disease is to perform an intestinal biopsy. If the results reveal villous atrophy (flattening of the intestinal folds) then celiac disease is diagnosed. If the biopsy results are negative, then both celiac disease and gluten sensitivity may be dismissed by the physician. There are more than 180 different disease conditions, syndromes, and symptoms that have been linked to gluten sensitivity in the medical research.2,3 Some common conditions include thyroid disorders, migraines, vertigo, osteoporosis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and PCOS. There have been two proposed names in the medical literature for this classification of gluten sensitivity. 1. NonCeliac Gluten Intolerance4 and 2. Gluten Syndrome.5 Diagnosing Gluten Sensitivity & Celiac Disease The proper tools must be used to accurately diagnose gluten sensitivity. Relying solely on a biopsy can delay a diagnosis for several years. I have personally seen cases of celiac disease where up to 8 biopsies were performed before a diagnosis was made. Blood antibody tests provide a better degree of accuracy but still have a great degree of false negatives. Genetic testing offers the greatest degree of accuracy

Once Again, Common Sense Applies – Several years ago, many Americans played an unknowing role in the social experiment known as the Atkin’s diet. This diet, largely devoid of grain provided many with better health through weight loss and reduction of many generalized symptoms of poor health. However, there were also those whose health did poorly on the Atkin’s diet. People are different and unique. Renowned Nobel Prize winning scientist, Roger Williams, wrote a book called Biochemical Individuality examining these individual differences. Bottom line: one diet is not right for everyone. Because going on a gluten free takes a great deal of education and commitment, it is recommended that proper testing be performed to identify whether the diet is right for you. Remember going gluten free is not a trendy diet; it is a permanent lifestyle that should be taken very seriously as even small amounts of gluten exposure can cause problems. This month I will leave you with a final thought on gluten and grains. When farmers want their cows and pigs to gain weight before going to market, they feed them more grain. In the past 100 years, grain consumption has dramatically increased, paralleling a rise in the incidence of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer. Grand Opening of the ‘Polly Ryon’ Building at Texana

exana Center officially dedicated the Learning Center, at the new West Campus, as the Polly Ryon Building at a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on May 3. George Patterson, Texana Chief Executive Officer, provided the welcoming address introducing the Texana Board of Trustees; Dianne Wilson, Steve McDowell, Dr. Dennis Young, J.C. Whitten, Willie Greer and Anita Christensen. Dianne Wilson, Texana Board of Trustees Chair, described Texana’s vision to be recognized and supported as the leading resource in the community for people with behavioral healthcare needs and intellectual and developmental disabilities services. Wilson stated that this vision will be achieved by creating and delivering life changing services, providing care, support and education, to unlock clients’ and patients’ potential for safe, independent and productive lives within our community and that this new learning center is a step towards that vision. Wilson thanked The George Foundation for their foresight in awarding the $1.5 million challenge grant that lead the way to Texana’s success in obtaining several large donations from other foundations including Gulf Coast Medical Foundation, Houston Endowment, The Mabee Foundation and the Meadows Foundation. Patterson talked about the honor of being able to name this first-class learning center building after such an impressive historical figure in the community – Polly Ryon – the much beloved grandmother of the late Mamie George. He went on to describe Polly’s leadership, care and compassion as she tended both to the family ranch and the people in the community. He remarked that she has provided a shining example to Texana as they care, support and educate all that enter the Polly Ryon Building. Mike Wells, Chairman of The George Foundation Board, congratulated Texana and commented that The George Founda-

These services are vital and needed, as there is no other provider in Fort Bend County area offering equivalent programs. The Service Center will administer and deliver individual client services such as case management, nursing services, and enrollment in respite care. The Early Childhood Intervention program, which provides support to children under the age of three with developmental delays, will also be housed in our new Service Center. Texana is one of the largest community-based programs in Texas, has 43 facilities in its six-county service area, served by close to 600 staff. Since its inception in 1989, Suburban Sugar Land Women (SSLW), a 501C3 nonprofit organization, has continued to provide social services and financial resources to the less fortunate in the greater Fort Bend community. SSLW has five programs: life enrichment for senior citizens, family outreach, neonatal services, youth development, and community partnerships. Its mission is “to encourage, equip, educate, and empower.” In connection with its focus on youth, it awards scholarships on an annual basis. Literacy Council of Fort Bend County Presents the 2nd Annual Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County is proud to present the 2nd Annual Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee. The Bee will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, August 26, 2011 at the University of Houston-Sugar Land. Join the Literacy Council for a corporate-style luncheon as co-workers try to spell their way to a place in the “Honey Hall of Fame.” Bee is a unique event that is unlike any other event in Fort Bend County. Teams of three adults will compete against other local competitors to win the title as the “Best Grown-Up Spellers in the County.” Each team will be provided with a list of words to study prior to the Bee. Firefighter Matthew Wild and his Missouri City Fire & Rescue Service colleagues will be accepting donations to help Jerry’s Kids.
Help Missouri City’s Firefighters ‘Fill the Boot’ for Jerry’s Kids Missouri City’s firefighters are participating in the national drive to “Fill the Boot” for Jerry’s Kids with Muscular Dystrophy. In a campaign that began about 16 years ago, the firefighters spend one Saturday per shift collecting funds that benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s services and research programs, including MDA’s outpatient clinics at Texas Children’s Hospital and The Methodist Neurological Institute in Houston. “All three shifts of firefighters will be working to collect donations for MDA, in addition to performing their normal duties,” said firefighter Frank Luu, who heads the campaign. “Our goal is to top the $10,000 reached last year.” The “Fill the Boot” Campaign involves firefighters across the country who have raised more than $200 million for MDA’s fight against neuromuscular diseases since 1954. Missouri City’s Fire & Rescue Service will be collecting at Kroger’s at Highway 6 and Murphy Road; and Foodarama at Texas Parkway and Cartwright Road on Saturday, June 11. MDA is funded almost entirely by individual contributions and cooperating organizations and dedicates 77 cents of every dollar it spends directly to research, services and education. Donations are also being accepted at any of Missouri City’s fire stations. A Missouri City Fire & Rescue Service representative will present a check for Jerry’s Kids on Labor Day, Sept. 5, during the 46th annual MDA telethon on KPRC-TV, Channel 2.

CrossingPoint Christian Church Offers “Real Talk” In Partnership With Local Public Schools Five years ago, Pastor Craig Hayes began mentoring a small group of at-risk teens at Elkins High School. What began as a desire to provide character-building support to local community schools has evolved into a forum that is reaching hundreds of at-risk teens at a time. Coined as the “Real Talk” Conference, this new program creates a platform for dialogue with teens on current issues that impact their everyday lives. “It is our goal to impact at-risk teens in positive ways,” said Pastor Hayes. “The church is meant to be a valuable resource to the communities it serves. At CrossingPoint, we are interested in reaching out to families and youth by providing life changing information that will strengthen every aspect of family life and lead to more successful communities. The local school is meant to provide excellence in educational opportunities to all children. Today, local schools are hard pressed to perform efficiently due to financial and many social issues beyond their reach. ‘Real Talk’ is an opportunity for the church to partner with public schools and support their efforts to educate our children by addressing social issues that impact today’s youth.” On Saturday, March 12, 2011, Hightower High School joined with CrossingPoint Church to host a “Real Talk 2011” conference to combat teen dating violence. In a program entitled “Real Talk 2011: Love Yourself, Be Yourself,” teens and their parents participated in a hiphop panel to openly discuss the effect of negative music lyrics on dating violence, received vital information on the legal implications of sexting from attorney Rodney Brown; and were encouraged to embrace being responsible teens by author and life coach Kachelle Kelley. Real Talk is a FREE outreach program of CrossingPoint Christian Church. We can not begin to thank the George Foundation for their generous support,” said Manuela Arroyos, chief executive officer, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels. The George Foundation funds will be used to provide meals to the elderly over
the weekend. Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels program provided meals only Monday – Friday, until the George Foundation began providing funds for meals over the weekend. “The George Foundation has allowed us to expand our Meals on Wheels program to seven days a week, which is literally transforming the lives of the elderly in our community,” Arroyos said. For 11 days this summer, people across the Houston region can experience the biblical Old Testament brought to life when First Colony Church of Christ hosts the Tabernacle Experience – a life-size tabernacle and interactive exhibit. From June 24 to July 4, the public is invited to view the tabernacle and enjoy the interactive, audio-based tour for $5 per person. Tours will start from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 24-28 and June 30 through July 3; from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 29; and from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on July 4. The tour generally takes about 45 minutes. In addition, groups can schedule in advance to tour most mornings, beginning at 9 a.m. Tour groups will receive a discounted entrance fee. A special preview night is scheduled June 23 for religious leaders from across the region, as well as media representatives. During “The Tabernacle Experience: Journey to the Most Holy,” visitors take a self-guided tour through seven stations of the Tabernacle of Moses, learning about the portable sanctuary that housed the Ark of the Covenant more than 3,000 years ago, as described in great detail in the book of Exodus. This replica of the tabernacle remains true to the precise size and layout of the

She and her husband first built a full-size tabernacle for a women’s retreat. “Just as the original Tabernacle moved from town to town in the days of the Old Testament, our life-size replica travels across the United States, impacting communities and churches from California to North Carolina,” wrote Whittaker on her website. She said the Tabernacle Experience reveals “Jesus the Christ in every aspect.” Visitors who have participated in the Tabernacle Experience in other cities have written strong responses afterward. “The truths of the Tabernacle are lifechanging…. Participating in the life-size replica is an opportunity not to be missed by anyone who desires a tangible, multisensory experience of worship and communion with God,” wrote Kay Warren, wife of Rick Warren, minister and author of The Purpose Driven Life. A reviewer for the L.A. X-Men:
First Class follows the classic Marvel mythology and charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, all the while revealing a secret history of famous global events. Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr took the names
Michael Fassbender portrays Erik Lehnsherr, who has the power to control magnetism. Lehnsherr is determined to exact revenge on the monstrous evil who “created” him.
Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to prevent nuclear Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men. Whenever I think of a movie franchise “rebooting,” my first knee-jerk reaction is some incoherent—and often profane— gripe about Hollywood not having any original ideas, a reaction that is, ironically, not terribly unique. Actually thinking about the matter forces one to consider the Batman reboot, which went rather well, and the James Bond reboot, which went stunningly well (for the first movie, at least). Not a half-bad track record for the institution of the reboot. Upon the first viewing, X-Men: First Class does a fine job continuing that trend in a very positive manner. The performances are charismatic and the chemistry between the cast members is palpable. Excellent work all around. 20th Century Fox, in its release, said “X-Men: First Class charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals
a secret history of famous global events.” It also seems to be about James McAvoy being very sensitive as Charles Xavier and Michael Fassbender being absolutely awesome as Erik Lehnsherr. The supporting cast features a number of solid pros as well (Kevin Bacon, January Jones, Jennifer Lawrence, Oliver Platt and Ray Wise as well). Upon hearing that Matthew Vaughn was to direct this film, I cringed a bit. Vaughn demonstrated his ability to direct comic-book action in KickAss (in which he did an excellent job), though it isn’t too much of a challenge to direct a singularly arced film. It is, however, something completely different to direct something this big that has multiple story arcs and, with arguably half the planet interested in seeing the film, the pressure that comes with that. Neurofeedback: Sounds like Science Fiction?
I
n the 21st century, there has been a change in the way people take care of themselves, and many are taking a more proactive role in managing their health for their own overall wellbeing. Donation of Rio Bend Community Allows Catholic Charities to Expand Foster Care Services in Fort Bend Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston recently received the 30-acre Rio Bend community located at 1500 Pultar Road in Richmond as a gift for its foster care program. Rio Bend, established in 2005 as a community for foster children and their foster families, includes eight single-family homes, a chapel and playground. “We are so grateful to be entrusted with this gift,” said Bonna Kol, Catholic Charities president and CEO. “It allows us to expand our work supporting the care of foster children in Fort Bend County and provides the opportunity to serve vulnerable children in a safe and loving community setting.” Children will begin moving to the new community in early June. When Catholic Charities fills Rio Bend to capacity, it will serve 48 children, those of whom may be referred from the state foster care system, refugees separated from their parents, or orphans and trafficking victims from countries as far as Burma, Congo and Central America. Catholic Charities has provided foster care services since its inception in 1943, helping children who have suffered abuse, neglect and abandonment. Today the agency serves these children through both group foster homes and individual foster families, depending on the children’s needs. Catholic Charities works with foster parents across the Greater Houston and Fort Bend areas to provide their foster children with strong family connections and experiences, and benefits such as life skills training, medical care and mentoring. The agency also serves children in a group foster setting. Here, children who are victims of human trafficking or refugees who have been separated from their parents receive a comprehensive evaluation of their needs in a nurturing setting and are provided with special services such as English classes, ongoing family tracing and legal assistance. From the Frontlines of Cancer: A Nurse’s Perspective on Survival

O
n Sunday, June 5, millions of people around the country will gather to commemorate National Cancer Survivor’s Day – a celebration that honors cancer survivors and demonstrates that life after cancer can be meaningful and rewarding. At Texas Oncology, we support thousands of patients in the fight for their life every year, and we salute all cancer survivors for their perseverance, resolve, and courage. The number of cancer survivors in the United States has continued to rise over the past four decades – the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Cancer Institute recently reported that there are 11.7 million survivors as of 2007*. That’s compared to only 9.8 million cancer survivors in 2001 and 3 million cancer survivors in 1971. A cancer survivor is defined as anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer, from the time of diagnosis through the balance of his or her life. While this increase in survivors is due in large part to early detection and advances in treatment options, there is an-

Form a Strong Support System Whether it’s with family, friends, coworkers, or neighbors, a cancer patient with a strong support system in place is more likely to have a better treatment experience. Our patients tell us that having loved ones around to help with dayto-day tasks is a tremendous help, and allows them to rest and reduce stress. In addition, friends and family can help calm anxiety about a cancer diagnosis and treatment. Connect With Other Cancer Patients While fighting cancer, patients encounter any number of extremely difficult situations, which can only fully be understood by others experiencing the same thing. We continuously see that patients who attend cancer support groups have less anxiety and a more positive outlook on their situation. In support groups, patients can bring up subjects that may be too difficult to talk about with family and friends – from questions about the physical and emotional side effects of treatment to concerns www.fortbend

about end-of-life decisions. Texas Oncology has many resources available to help cancer patients connect with each other. At Texas Oncology–Sugar Land, we offer activities through the American Cancer Society and host their “Look Good…Feel Better®” program. We facilitate referrals to other specific support groups and counseling, tailored to meet the patient’s specific needs. If you’re not able to attend a support group, look for other ways to connect with cancer patients – whether that’s through your community or even in the chemotherapy room during treatment. Do What Makes You Happy When patients undergo chemotherapy and radiation treatments, it can sometimes be difficult to remain positive. So, we encourage patients to do one thing every day that makes them happy. For some people, that’s going to lunch with a friend that always makes them laugh. For others, it may be as simple as taking the dog on a walk or drinking a chocolate milkshake. We’ve actually had many patients who absolutely love going to work, so they do their best to make it to the office every day they can. By participating in activities that are enjoyable, patients are less likely to focus on their cancer and more likely to get something positive out of every day. Fort Bend Community Joins Women’s Center for
Denim Day 2011 O
n April 27, local Fort Bend businesses and the general community teamed with the Fort Bend County Women’s Center to celebrate Denim Day 2011. By simply wearing a pair of jeans, a denim shirt or jacket and teal ribbons, participants played a part in this important day during Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. Denim Day began in the mid-90’s when a teenage girl in Italy was picked up by her 45-year-old old driving instructor for her first lesson. He took her to an isolated location, pulled her out of the car and forcefully raped her. Despite threats that she would be killed if she told anyone, the girl reported the incident, and the case was prosecuted. The driving instructor was convicted of rape and sentenced to jail. Months later, the perpetrator appealed the sentence, and the case made it all the way to the Italian Supreme Court. The case against the driving instructor was overturned, and the perpetrator was released. In a statement released by the Head Judge, he stated, “because the victim wore very, very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them, and by removing the jeans, it was no longer rape but consensual sex.” Outraged by the verdict, the women in the Italian Parliament began what started out as a protest against the court case by wearing jeans to work. It began an annual international demonstration known as Denim Day. The wearing of jeans became an international symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault.

Many women do not report their victimization for a variety of reasons, including fear.

Moody Gardens Offers Summer Fun With New Rainforest Adventures, Palm Beach Enhancement

ollowing a $25 million enhancement and damage from Hurricane Ike, this attraction emerges to offer an up-close interactive experience with endangered animals and plants that can only be found in an actual rainforest. A canopy-level entry takes guests across a new giant Amazon river otter exhibit. Free-roaming saki monkeys, two-toed sloths, cotton-top tamarins, birds and lizards greet visitors at treetop level for an entirely new perspective of the Rainforest Pyramid. Neerja Aggarwal, a junior at Hightower High School, received outstanding recognition and numerous awards at the 52nd Science Engineering Fair of Houston. Neerja placed 1st in the Senior Division Chemistry and won six special awards from various national organizations. Neerja also qualified to compete in the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair.

On April 9th, GYMTEX boys, coached by Christina Zhou, were crowned Champion titles on Floor Exercise, Rings, and Parallel Bars at the 2011 South State Championship. They brought home 6 gold, 5 silver, and 12 bronze medals. Richard Mays (Level 4), a 1st grader at Imani, fell twice from his first event but fought back to win on Floor and Rings. He scored 15.9 on Rings - only 0.1 from a perfect score! Richard also earned 2nd on Vault and All Around and 4th on Parallel Bars. Leo Dong (Level 5), a 4th grader at Cornerstone, won the Parallel Bars championship for a second year. His courage ensured his success. Leo also won 4th on Vault and 6th All Around. Cameron Jones (Level 5), a 4th grader at Austin Parkway, is a pioneer on learning skills and fought hard to win 5th All Around, 3rd on Parallel Bars and High Bar. Nicholas (Level 5), a 5th grader at Sienna Crossing, won 4th on Vault and 13th All Around. His calmness showed his captain leadership. Alex McDaniel (Level 5), a 5th grade at Neff, was determined to reach his potential. He improved his All Around score by 8 points and won 4th on Floor. GYMTEX, a small gym in Sugar Land, has produced state level champions since 2002. A
s the school year comes to a close, graduating senior Catherine Taylor looks back at her time at Fort Bend Baptist Academy with a “joyful heart” and looks forward to the next step in her life – college. When Catherine graduates this year, she will walk away with long list of accomplishments, but is quick to say she owes it all to God. Catherine shares, “Personally, I found that the best way to go through high school or anything in life is to glorify God in everything you do. That’s how you find comfort and peace in hard times. It also prevents you from making a lot of mistakes that you’ll regret later. This has given me good purpose and direction in my life.” Many of Catherine’s fondest memories stem from her time as a member of the Fort Bend Baptist Academy cheerleading squad. “Cheering takes a lot of time,” Catherine starts. “You get really close to your teammates. I enjoy having a team that works together to represent our school in a good light. I really like being a part of the school community and supporting our teams.” Catherine has been cheering for six years and for the past four has been on the varsity squad. Cheering was the sport she decided that she wanted to devote her time to, so she started taking gymnastics and tumbling classes in sixth grade to build her skill level. Now, six years later, Catherine is a part of a first place winning
who (she is) going to be.” A threeyear member of the National Honor Society, Catherine earned a partial scholarship to attend the university. “It’ll be nice to venture out and explore a new world,” Catherine shares. “It’s a diverse school, and there’s so much to do in Austin. Also, I want to be an engineer, and they have a great program.”

Catherine’s experience at this competition she says is one of her proudest moments from high school. “When we won nationals, we went into the competition in second place, and then won the whole thing,” Catherine says. “After working so hard, it was such a proud moment for all of us. It was the last cheerleading activity we’d do for the year, and we were all so elated. It was just incredible and nerve-racking at the same time. A couple of things went wrong in our routine, but we persevered and accomplished what we set out to do.” Though her cheerleading days are over, Catherine, a gifted student, is looking forward to attending the University of Texas at Austin this fall and taking the next step in “becoming
Catherine continues, “I really want to have a job that could be beneficial and useful to the mission field. If I become an engineer, I could use a normal job to further international mission work, and I definitely would like to use my profession toward something like that.” Though she looks forward to the next chapter in her life with anticipation, Catherine knows she is going to miss some aspects of her high school life. “I’ll miss all the people who are in my graduating class. I’ll also miss cheering at football games and being with my friends. My school was small enough to where we all knew each other and got along really well. I won’t have that in college.” With all the “joy” that fills Catherine’s heart, she is sure to continue to lead a successful and happy life. H

Make Dad Happy with Less Traditional Father’s Day Fare

etting ready to gift Dad for Father’s Day? To those heading to the menswear department of their local clothing stores, do not even think about veering toward the tie display. Doesn’t Dad deserve something a little more than a necktie? Father’s Day celebrates the scores of fathers who get up early every morning and head to work to provide for their families. It also honors the men who devote their free time to coach baseball practices, lead scouting troops, run behind a bicycle while a child is learning to ride, and so many other fatherly tasks. Every year kids (and their moms) fret over what to purchase for the special man of the house. Maybe Dad has a hobby or interest that makes gifting easy. Too often, however, figuring out a Father’s Day present can be a challenge. Although neckties top the list of go-to gifts, chances are Dad wouldn’t be upset if he didn’t unwrap one this year. Texana Welcomes New Board Member Mary Rose Zdunkewicz, Mayor of Weston Lakes, was recently sworn in as the newest member of the Texana Center Board of Trustees by Board Chair, Dianne Wilson. She will be one of four Mary Rose Zdunkewicz Board members who represent Fort Bend County. Mary Rose Zdunkewicz was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, but came to Fort Bend County at the age of two, attended Lamar Consolidated Independent School District, and has been a resident of Weston Lakes since 1985. Cancer Diagnosis—Explore Your Options A cancer diagnosis is an all too familiar reality these days. Approximately half of all men and onethird of all women in the United States will develop some form of cancer during their lifetimes. “Often coming without warning, a diagnosis of cancer is sure to bring feelings of denial, anxiety and fear,” says Alexander Wong, M.D., board-certified hematologist/oncologist on staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “It also may become necessary to make important decisions about treatment options in a short amount of time.” Here are some suggestions to help you or a family member through this difficult process. Ask detailed questions. Find out the name of the cancer and its stage, size and location. Where did it start, and has it spread to other areas? “Some cancers are slow-growing, while others are more aggressive,” Dr. Wong says. “Depending on which type it is, you may be facing different treatment options. Ask about the success rate of each option and possible side effects. Do not be misled by statistics, as each individual is unique and so is survival.” Enlist a support system. Consider bringing someone you trust with you to appointments when the diagnosis and treatment options are explained. This
advocate – someone who can understand the information and ask more questions – is valuable at an emotional time when it may be hard to comprehend everything coming Alexander Wong, at you. M.D. Explore your options. If you’re best at making decisions when armed with lots of information, consider researching more on your own. The National Cancer Institute, www.cancer.gov, is a good starting point for learning about surgery options, radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and integrative therapies. Your doctor can also supply you with patient education materials. If too much information overwhelms you, let your doctor know. He or she can recommend evidencebased treatment strategies appropriate for your situation. Consult an oncologist. A cancer specialist or oncologist has information about the latest treatment options and also clinical trials that you may want to consider. Care provided by an oncologist in the local community can significantly reduce the hazard of traveling while going through treatments. Each
treatment has its own set of side effects. Complementary therapies like acupuncture, acupressure and herbs are available to help improve side effects. Your oncologist can help you evaluate options and explain realistic expectations. Maintain a positive attitude. “It is normal to go through denial, fear and even depression,” Dr. Wong says. “You have to forget about what is behind and focus on what is ahead.” Ask for help from your family, friends, spiritual advisors and health professionals. M edical F ocus Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is building out the sixth floor of its Main Pavilion, adding 56 beds and improving the hospital’s ability to meet the volume and needs of patients from Fort Bend and surrounding areas. The floor will be dedicated to orthopedic and neurosurgery patients and will include a gym and rehabilitation equipment to accommodate patients who require physical therapy following a procedure. Construction is expected to be complete in the fall. “The build-out of our sixth floor allows us to expand and provide a dedicated area for patients in two of our fastest growing service lines,” says Chris Siebenaler, Methodist Sugar Land Hospital CEO. “Investments like this further our commitment to the community—to provide much-needed services close to home.” Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is also adding eight intensive care unit (ICU) beds in its Sweetwater Pavilion. When the human body’s core temperature drops below 35 °C (95°F), hypothermia begins to set in, bringing with it uncontrollable shivering, slurred speech, confusion, loss of coordination and more. But doctors at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital (MSLH) are actually inducing hypothermia in heart attack patients as a way to restore them back to health. Methodist Sugar Land Hospital now has the Arctic Sun Temperature Management System, a thermoregulatory device that enables medical staff to control a patient’s temperature anywhere from 33°C to 37°C. This advanced technology is being used to help improve outcomes for critically ill patients, es-
pecially those who have experienced an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Most deaths for severe cardiac arrests occur in the first 24 hours after the incident. But even if the patient survives, there may be brain injury related to compromised circulation during the cardiac arrest. “Recent research indicates that damage to the brain may be decreased by cooling the body’s temperature, as this reduces the body’s metabolic needs,” said M. Faisal Khan M.D., board certified neurologist with Methodist Sugar Land Neurology Associates. “If implemented in time, therapeutic hypothermia can improve neurological recovery for patients who are unresponsive after cardiac arrest.” The Arctic Sun system differs from previous cooling methods in that it is non-invasive, which also decreases the likelihood of infection. The system uses cold water running through transfer pads that are placed all over the patient’s body. The water flows through the pads at a rate of 3-4 liters per minute and the temperature is controlled either manually by clinicians or is automatically regulated to reach a certain temperature in the patient’s body. The machine is also relatively small and mobile. We are seeing some amazing outcomes with the use of hypothermia treatment. One local resident, Melvin Knesek, states, “I feel blessed to live so close to a hospital that is able to provide such progressive options that resulted in saving my life. I am very thankful for all of the care I received from everyone at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital.
They literally saved my life!” Knesek came through the Emergency Department after suffering an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. He was almost home after one of his daily walks when he was suddenly struck by a heart attack. Knesek’s neighbor found him and provided CPR until medical personnel arrived. “He arrived to our ER breathing, but unresponsive. After careful evaluation, the ER physicians decided that this patient was a candidate for hypothermia treatment,” says Scott Rivenes, M.D., Medical Director of MSLH ER. After receiving hypothermia treatment for 24 hours, the patient had no anoxic (brain) injury even though his brain had been deprived of oxygen due to the cardiac arrest. “He was found to have multi-vessel coronary artery disease, most likely the cause of his cardiac arrest,” says Uttam Tripathy, M.D., board certified cardiothoracic surgeon on staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “After undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery, he is doing great.” “We are thankful for all of the doctors and the nursing staff for being so accommodating in making sure my family and I were comfortable and that all of our questions were answered. As you can imagine, we had a lot of questions when they told us they were inducing him into hypothermia,” says wife, Loretta Knesek. Living the Sweet Life

W
hen I was a little girl, my nickname in my house was “motor mouth.” I can remember when we were all sitting at the table, and I would start to talk. The adults would pretend to listen to what I had to say, which by the way was probably very important, and right in the middle of one of my sentences, someone would start screaming “SHUT UP!!!!” I got very used to this sort of behavior, but it did not sway me from whatever subject I was determined to discuss. In grade school, the adults would often comment that I was “articulate.” I liked the way that sounded. The time came for me to be “tested” for the term I have now come to despise – “gifted and talented” – which was supposed to say, I guess, that you were above average, depending on what they were testing and who had made the entrance rules. I did not get in to this program. To my chagrin, my sister did. It was not until I became a mother and delivered unto this earth another “motor mouth” that it all came flooding back to me. The hurt and anger, that is, at being labeled because of a personality trait that I will attest has served me quite well, thank you very much! Over my years in learning, it was very obvious that a smaller school classroom was the perfect fit for me. I was often asked to answer questions and in my learning style of talking through answers and information in order to understand my world. Ask me to stand up in front of a loving class filled with peers that knew me to give a speech, and it was a piece of cake. The sounds of their hands clapping when my first art exhibit was unveiled.... like music to my artistic ears! When my sister, who had never studied in her life and could regurgitate any information, came to the small school, she was very withdrawn and quite unhappy. She was expected to work in groups and talk through subjects and yes, give speeches. For her, one would have thought that was worse than death itself. In the small classroom setting where I could personally speak with each professor and ask questions until the information finally clicked, I was unstoppable. You know what? I found that I was a gifted and a very talented kiddo despite that early label. You see, my sister fit into the perfect mold of the perfect student that by someone (who by the way I’d like to strangle) had designated for the public schools.
In my own search as a mother, I have found many tools that have assisted me in what and how to better parent. There’s a book by Barbara Joosse entitled I Love You the Purplest in which a mother answers the question that every child secretly wants to know the answer to: “How much do you love me?” In the book, she describes to each their best virtues and characteristics, telling them through colors who they are to her and how much they each mean to her. I came across Appleton and their “geniuStyle” program a few months ago, and immediately, I was sold. In their own words, “Real students are so much more than a percentile, a GPA or a test score.” I wanted to learn more about what made the program so special. Through a personality profile, Appleton asks the child and the parent the ways in which they like to study. Do you get queasy in the classroom if you have to stand up in front of the class? Do you prefer working until you get through or is it better to take small breaks so you can reset the brain and actually retain more? All of these questions translate into a “geniuStyle” that has cool names and explains how that person best learns. For example, the Aristotle is well-loved by teachers because they have a learning style that is a perfect match to the traditional classroom setting. Then, there’s the exact opposite – Picasso – who is talkative and needs to explore through discussion. In a classroom set up for teaching many children, there is little time for meeting the academic needs of the later. Aristotles are often seen as compliant and easy to teach and yes, “gifted and talented.” Whereas Picasso’s may be seen as being talkative and disruptive despite the fact that they are a majority in the personality profiles of National Merit Scholars. All in all, there are a total of eight diffort bend

ferent and equally valid learning styles. Suddenly, that child that is talkative is not just running his mouth to hear himself talk, but is actually trying to process and learn actively in his environment. I’ll tell you something else too... I found out I was a Picasso and went on back to the studio while the children were taking their tests. James Edward threw open the door and with his arms outstretched and a grand smile on his face, he exclaimed “Mommy, I am a Picasso too!” It was a proud moment! Take Care of YOU!!!!
