Hello Fort Bend Friends, May is a special month for me. It is the beginning of the Summer season, it is the month I celebrate being a Mom and it is my first born’s birthday. My daughter, Kathryn, turns eighteen this month and graduates in June. I suspect she is excited about going off on her own just as much as I am anxious about her going off on her own. It is a time for new beginnings and a time for letting go.

Another institute that is continually striving to meet the needs of the community is Methodist Hospital of Sugar Land. Meet eight women, ALL doctors, ALL moms, ALL in one practice - Methodist Family Medicine. There are 21 kids between them and all have very busy lives. They answer questions that explain how they manage it all and what some of their challenges are being not only working moms but also taking great care with their patients.

How do you personally balance motherhood, your family and your career? There is a lot of planning involved in trying to coordinate everything. I try to keep myself organized at the beginning of each week so I know what is coming up, and I know when to ask for help. Family and friends play a big role in helping me balance our lives. What is the absolute best thing about being a mother? I enjoy spending time with my kids

Physician:

Jennifer Diamond, M.D.

How has motherhood influenced you as a physician? Becoming a mother has made me more empathetic with my patients. I can better relate to my patient’s stress levels and to the challenges of parenthood they’re having themselves. Plus, taking care of kids in the office is easier when you have your own, because you not only know what the books taught you, but now you know from personal experience!!

Specialty: Family Practice Children: Tyler age 9, Abby age 7, and Luke age 3 Spouse: Matt Diamond Years Practiced in Fort Bend: 11 years What is the best advice you have ever been given about being a mother? I’m still waiting for it!! How do you personally balance motherhood, your family and your career? I’m still working on it. Unfortunately, my job demands often take priority over my family, and I have terrible “mommy guilt”, but I try to do my best to get to their special school events, baseball games or swim meets after school. What is the absolute best thing about being a mother? That changes for me day to day. Right now, it’s my 9 year-old’s home run, my 7 year-old’s picture she drew me, or my 3 year-old’s smile and laughter.

What is the one tradition that your family has that you hope your children will continue as they become adults? We try our best to eat dinner at the table together every night, which sometimes is tough with our crazy schedules. But there’s lots of laughter and catching up that happens there, so it’s worth the effort.

Your practice consists of eight women – all mothers – which is rather unique. Do you find that because of your similarities, your colleagues are more supportive of the challenges you face being a working mom? We’re all each other’s biggest supporters and friends. We’ve all had to miss or leave work because of a sick child, and someone will always see your patients in your place!! We’ve all passed around our kid’s outgrown clothes, toys, Halloween costumes, and soccer cleats because none of us have time to shop!! What’s the easier job – motherhood or medicine? Oh medicine’s much easier!! If I don’t know something at work, I can open a book or find the answer online or by calling another physician. Nobody hands you all the answers of motherhood when you have a baby---maybe they should!! ■ FBF

What is your favorite thing you enjoy doing with your children? I enjoy doing things with them outdoors—going to the park or the zoo, on a bike ride, or swimming in the back yard.

What are your hobbies and/or special interests? Spare time--what’s that? My husband and I love to get to the movies when we can. And, I’ve done a lot of jogging lately, having just finished the Sugar Land Half-Marathon in March and completed a sprint triathlon last fall.

and listening to what is going on in their lives. It is rewarding to see them succeed so you know that your hard work was worth it.

and speak Spanish. We have tried to help them learn and encourage them to learn it well because they will use it a lot all their lives.

What is your favorite thing you enjoy doing with your children? I enjoy being part of all the activities they are involved in. I especially enjoy seeing them succeed in what they are doing.

What are your hobbies and/or special interests? I enjoy traveling, reading and going to the movies. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with family and friends. I also enjoy going to the beach with my family.

Your practice consists of eight women – all mothers – which is rather unique. Do you find that because of your similarities, your colleagues are more supportive of the challenges you face being a working mom? They are more understanding and therefore, more supportive.

How has motherhood influenced you as a physician? I think it has taught me to be patient.

What’s the easier job – motherhood or medicine? Medicine. ■ FBF

Yana Finkelshteyn, M.D. Speciality: Family Medicine Children: Rachel age 5 and Gabriella age 2. Husband : David S. Bobb Jr., MD. Years Practicing in Fort Bend: 4 What is the best advice you have ever been given about being a mother? Accept help, and always bring extra diapers and a change of clothes. How do you personally balance motherhood, your family and your career? I am lucky enough to work part time and for an organization that is incredibly supportive of working moms. My husband is also a

What is the absolute best thing about being a mother? The best thing about being a mom is the love I get to share with my kids. Hearing, “I love you too, Mama” from my two-year-old is pretty awesome. Watching their minds and imaginations develop is pretty amazing. What is your favorite thing you enjoy doing with your children? We love spending time outdoors,

Watching my children grow and mature through each stage. It’s amazing to see them develop their own special interests and grow in confidence as they succeed.

Physician:

Lisa Holloway, D.O. Speciality: Family Medicine Children: Reginald age 12, Jared age 10, Jade age 3, and Jonathan age 2 Husband : Reginald Holloway Years Practicing in Fort Bend: 3

What is your favorite thing you enjoy doing with your children? I enjoy going to zoos, museums and parks with the kids. There is a big difference in age with my children, and these are places they can all enjoy!

What is the best advice you have ever been given about being a mother? The best advice ever given to me about being a mother was from my best friend, my mother. Relax and enjoy the ride! Motherhood is a work in progress. Be gracious enough to accept help. Never be too big to say I’m sorry. Appreciate the individuality of each child. Allow children to deal with the consequences of their actions, it will better prepare them for the future. Be a mother, your children will have a lot of friends. And above all, your children should know that you love them completely and unconditionally. How do you personally balance motherhood, your family and your career? Balancing time between motherhood, family and career is a juggling act. My loving husband of 13 years has been supportive, and this has allowed me to give my patients the attention they need while he is taking care of the home front.

physician and has been in training, so we have had extra challenges, but being a physician, he understands the demands of the job. Juggling transportation and childcare is challenging to say the least!

What is the one tradition that your family has that you hope your children will continue as they become adults? I hope and pray that faith will continue as a tradition. I want my children to develop their own personal relationship with God and allow Him to guide their lives.

My children have also been willing to share their mom with people they will probably never meet. I try to attend most of my children’s activities and fully focus on them with time we have. What is the absolute best thing about being a mother?

What are your hobbies and/or special interests? I enjoying reading, crocheting, sewing, camping and hiking. Just recently we started a family garden. The kids are really excited about seeing the vegetables grow! How has motherhood influenced you as a physician? Motherhood has influenced my life as a physician by stretching my compassion.

going to parks and the Houston Zoo. What is the one tradition that your family has that you hope your children will continue as they become adults? My older daughter was born on Thanksgiving. It had always been our favorite family holiday, but this made it even more special. I hope that we will carry on the tradition of gathering extended family and friends on this day that is about sharing food and being thankful. It was also my father’s favorite holiday and celebrating together keeps his memory alive for my girls. What are your hobbies and/or special interests? I like running, gardening and salsa

Achieving motherhood can be difficult and challenging. Having experienced secondary infertility, pregnancy loss, and adoption, I can relate to my patients who are going through these similar circumstances. Your practice consists of 8 women – all mothers – which is rather unique. Do you find that because of your similarities, your colleagues are more supportive of the challenges you face being a working mom? It has been wonderful to have such great women and mothers as a support. We can discuss the things that are going on with our children and receive some insightful thoughts. In our practice, there are moms with children from toddlers to teens, so it is great to talk about our experiences.

dancing. How has motherhood influenced you as a physician? Being a mother has made me more understanding of time pressures that families face. Many women and men have to choose between taking care of themselves, (i.e. sleeping enough, finding time to cook healthy food and getting physical exercise) and taking care of their families, be they young children or elderly parents, and this is in addition to pressures at work. Your practice consists of eight women – all mothers – which is rather unique. Do you find that because of your similarities, your colleagues are more supportive of the challenges you face being a working mom?

Absolutely! Everyone in the group balances motherhood and career, and they understand the challenges around the two. It’s a unique and wonderful work experience, and I feel blessed to be in a group like this. I also enjoy getting advice from the experienced moms since I have two young children. What’s the easier job – motherhood or medicine? Motherhood is a 24 hour, 7 days a week responsibility. Medicine is tough, but we do get weekends and vacations!! Like motherhood, medicine is a roller coaster of positive and negative emotions and both require intense attention and being in the moment. ■ FBF

Physician:

Julie Hung, M.D. Speciality: Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Children: Sara age 13 and Alex age 10 Husband : Andy Ho, M.D. Years Practicing in Fort Bend: 12 What is the best advice you have ever been given about being a mother? Enjoy every moment with your kids because they will grow up much too quickly. How do you personally balance motherhood, your family and your career? Balancing motherhood, family, and a career has been very tricky, and I’ve been able to do it only with the help of a wonderful husband and supportive parents and in-laws. Despite my best efforts, there are some times when work prevents me from being somewhere for the kids. A grandparent has always been there to help.

What’s the easier job – motherhood or medicine? I believe motherhood is the hardest job. Medicine is my calling, but motherhood is my legacy. Practicing medicine keeps me ever mindful of my mortality. A part of me will always live on through my children. At the end of my life, I know I won’t be wondering should I have done medical research or discovered some wonder drug. I would want to be reassured that I got it right with my children. ■ FBF

Julie Hung, M.D.

What is your favorite thing you enjoy doing with your children? My favorite thing to do with the kids is to stay in our pajamas on a Saturday morning and make a big breakfast together. What is the one tradition that your family has that you hope your children will continue as they become adults? I hope my children will continue to celebrate Chinese New Year by getting together with family and friends for a big, loud, boisterous dinner.

What are your hobbies and/or special interests? With the little spare time that I have, I enjoy reading, catching up on Grey’s Anatomy and the latest movies, and getting away to a warm, sandy beach with my family. How has motherhood influenced you as a physician? Motherhood has given me empathy for parents and their concerns when caring for their children. I still remember waking up every two hours to feed a newborn, walking up and down the hallway in the middle of the night trying to get a sick toddler to sleep, and worrying about whether a child’s abdominal pain could be something serious. As both a mother and a physician, I am able to address a parent’s

worries and fears with understanding and compassion. Your practice consists of eight women – all mothers – which is rather unique. What is the best advice you have ever been given about being a mother? Doctors are replaceable, but your kids only get one mom.

How has motherhood influenced you as a physician? I’m good at setting limits with my patients, setting reasonable expectations, rewards for small but significant accomplishments, and lots of anecdotal advice. I often will say, “Well. the doctor in me says ____, but the mom in me

What is the absolute best thing about being a mother? The love we share. May not always like it, but always will love it.

Mona Sheth, M.D. Years Practicing in Fort Bend: 7

How do you personally balance motherhood, your family and your career? I feel very fortunate to have found what I feel to be the perfect balance between family life and my career. Because I am able to work part time as a family physician mostly during my son’s school hours, I am able to provide care for my patients while still being able to participate in extracurricular activities, help with learning and schoolwork, and being available for my kids and husband. Even when not personally in the office, my patients are aware that I am available to address their medical concerns through my medical assistant or even through personal phone calls while I am at home. Singing songs at the top of our lungs and dancing freely to their favorite music. What is the one tradition that your family has that you hope your children will continue as they become adults? I hope that my kids will always continue to be family-oriented for immediate as well as extended family. What are your hobbies and/or special interests? During my spare time, I enjoy “Bollywood” dancing classes, and of course, relaxing in front of the television. How has motherhood influenced you as a physician? Being a mother and a wife has definitely made me a more compassionate physician as I am always aware that

Do you find that because of your similarities, your colleagues are more supportive of the challenges you face being a working mom? Some of us have known each other ten plus years, and some we are just getting to know over the past year. We are a multicultural group, with one common denominator: we are moms. That sisterhood allows for us to work together on flexible scheduling, vacation time, and covering for each other. What’s the easier job – motherhood or medicine? Medicine! I often say I work because people listen to me at work, whereas at home, no one listens to me. ■ FBF

every person I see in the office is more than a patient – they are a mom, dad, brother, sister, son or daughter to their loved ones. Your practice consists of eight women – all mothers – which is rather unique. Do you find that because of your similarities, your colleagues are more supportive of the challenges you face being a working mom? Although all of the physicians in our office have very different backgrounds, we are all working mothers with young kids who are all striving to be the best physicians and moms that we can be. Because of this, we are all very understanding and supportive of each other in our personal and work lives. What’s the easier job – motherhood or medicine? Difficult question – both are very challenging and yet very rewarding. ■ FBF

Checking for Cancer: Screenings for All Ages By Sanjay Sethi, M.D. Texas Oncology–Sugar Land

A

recent survey from Health Information National Trends revealed that most Americans have very little knowledge about cancer screenings – and the potential life-saving benefits that screenings and early detection/treatment can provide. According to the National Cancer Institute, it is possible that up to 35 percent of premature cancer-related deaths could be avoided through screening and early detection. At Texas Oncology–Sugar Land, we know screening can save lives. We see it every day. Understanding your risk factors and discussing options for prevention and screenings with your physician is a critical first step in checking for cancer. To increase understanding about available screening exams, we suggest the following general recommendations. Of course, age, gender, family history and specific types of cancer risks will impact your decision. Generally speaking, we suggest: Everyone, Every Age Everyone should check their skin once a month for any changes in moles, freckles, and other marks. Women should conduct regular breast self-exams. Any changes should be reported to their physicians. Women in their 20s Women in their twenties should check their breasts for lumps every month and have a clinical breast exam every one to three years. They should have a Pap smear to screen for cervical cancer once a year beginning at age 21, or three years after they begin to have sexual intercourse, regardless of whether they have received the HPV vaccine. Women with increased risks, such as a family history of breast cancer, should discuss beginning screenings earlier with their doctors. Advertorial

Women in their 30s Women in their thirties should continue to have clinical breast exams and Pap smears every one to three years. Women with a high lifetime risk for breast cancer — associated with defined genetic profiles — should discuss MRI screening with their physicians. Women in their 40s and 50s Women in their forties and fifties should have an annual mammogram and clinical breast exams and Pap smears every one to three years. Some women, in addition, may need MRI screening for breast cancer if recommended by their doctors (because of their family history, a genetic tendency, or certain other factors). Men in their 40s and 50s Men, after discussing pros and cons of testing with their physician, should have the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and a digital rectal examination (DRE) to screen for prostate cancer starting at age 50 and then as recommended by their physician. Men with a high risk of prostate cancer (African American men or those with a family history of the disease) should begin screenings at age 40. Women and Men in their 50s Beginning at age 50, men and women should be screened for colorectal cancer. A physician can recommend the best option for colorectal cancer screening, including fort bend

colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, fecal occult blood test, double contrast barium enema, or fecal immunochemical test. People with increased risk factors for colorectal cancer (family history of the disease, diabetes, or Lynch syndrome) should discuss beginning screenings earlier than age 50 with their physicians. Prevention A healthy diet, active lifestyle, avoidance of tobacco, and sun safety can go a long way in helping protect you from certain types of cancer. Regular screening tests/exams can often detect cancer at an early stage. Early detection can lead to early treatment and increased chances of positive outcomes. No matter your age, it is important to take the preventive measures that you can and to consider regular cancer screenings as part of your routine healthcare. Dr. Sanjay Sethi specializes in medical oncology and has a special interest in lung, breast, colon and prostate cancers. He is part of the cancer care team at Texas Oncology– Sugar Land. Will You be Able to Afford Care Tomorrow?

S

tatistics have shown that people are living longer than they ever have. While this is generally viewed as a positive thing, longer lives can also mean many expensive years that need to be paid for late in someone’s life. Instead of allowing your nest egg and assets to be eaten up by healthcare costs (which drastically rise with age), you need to be prepared, especially if you don’t want to pawn these expenses off on your children or grandchildren. I’m often asked, “What is longterm care insurance?” That’s a great question. Insurance can be confusing. Simply put long-term care insurance (LTCI) is an insurance policy that helps pay for the care you need when you can no longer care for yourself. It protects your family’s financial future and shields your own investments and savings. Long-term care insurance is an important consideration. With an increasing number of people needing LTCI each year, policy owners can find assurance in the fact that they will be covered. According to a 2009 MetLife Market Survey, the average nursing home stay is 2.4 years, with the average annual cost being $74,000.

The numbers are staggering, but you shouldn’t worry. Long term care insurance provides relief for those expenses as not to burden family members. It is generally recommended you have long-term care insurance in place by the time you are sixty years-old. I, however, believe mid-fifties is a more appropriate age to apply for LTCI. The reason being you are in better health during your younger years. The longer you delay applying for long-term care insurance, the greater the chances you’ll pay a higher premium for your coverage or in some cases your application will be rejected altogether, which defeats the purpose of LTC insurance. Most individuals view long-term care insurance, or life insurance for that matter, as a daunting task. Applying for insurance is relatively easy and the Hardee Investment Group can help. When applying for LTCI, be prepared to share medical information such as family health history, whether you’ve had cancer, stroke, heart attack or back problems, and tobacco use. We understand this information is sensitive to you. It’s important to understand the more transparent you are during the application process, the better the chances are that insurance

carrier will accept your application. If you find yourself thinking of longterm care insurance, call our team. We’re here to make the process easy on you. We work with our internal insurance specialist to help you obtain the best coverage for you. If you have a budget, we can “back into” a policy that has appropriate coverage for your needs, but still fits your monthly budget. The Hardee Investment Group doesn’t just offer single products; we like to provide a holistic approach to wealth management. We encourage you to learn more about our team. Thyroid Disease –

Can Gluten and Vitamin Deficiency Be to Blame? Thyroid Disease and Dysfunction Classic signs of thyroid hormone deficiency include fatigue, memory loss, cold hands and feet, muscle and joint pain, depression, high cholesterol, and constipation. Over the past several years, I have seen a large influx of patients that had been placed on thyroid hormones to treat the above symptoms. The problem with this approach is that it doesn’t actually address why the body is not making enough thyroid hormone in the first place. What you should know about Thyroid Hormone Production: Thyroid hormone production is under the influence of a chemical called thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). TSH is made by the pituitary gland. When circulating levels of thyroxine (T-4) are low, TSH sends a message to your thyroid gland to start producing more T-4. The building blocks your body uses to make T-4 come from food constituents that we obtain from the diet (tyrosine – an amino acid from protein and certain minerals – iodine, zinc, etc). Once your body makes T-4, it must be activated by other nutrients (vitamins and minerals) into something known as T-31. T-3 is the active form of thyroid hormone that works to increase the body’s metabolism. However, certain nutrient deficiencies and stress can lead to a reduction in T-3 and instead the production of Reverse T-3. This form of

T-3 is not as effective and leads to symptoms of hypothyroidism. Unfortunately, Reverse T-3 is cannot be distinguished from T-3 in traditional thyroid lab reports and this is a common oversight by many physicians. Once T-3 is made it will attach to the nucleus inside your cells and increase the body’s metabolism appropriately. Once again, however, certain nutrient deficiencies can decrease the responsiveness of our body’s cells to T-3, causing symptoms of hypothyroidism. For these reasons lab reports commonly performed by physicians that look at TSH, T-4, and T-3, can be misleading. A simplified diagram of thyroid hormone production is listed below: TSH Stimulates the thyroid gland to make T-4 T-4 Converts to either T-3 or Reverse T-3 (RT3) RT3 is inactive. Normal T-3 attaches to the cell nucleus Once attachment of T-3 occurs the body’s metabolism increases

Gluten Sensitivity and Thyroid Dysfunction Gluten sensitivity is a common cause of thyroid dysfunction. Gluten exposure can trigger an autoimmune reaction (Hashimoto’s disease) that disrupts normal thyroid hormone production. (For more on this visit www.GlutenFreeSociety.org) and visit the Glutenology tab. There are also many other environmental

Glutenology - Recipes for the Gluten Free Warrior

factors that can effect thyroid hormone production. Oral contraceptives and estrogen containing medications have been shown to reduce the conversion of T-4 to T-33. Many herbicides and pesticides contain estrogen mimicking compounds known to effect thyroid hormone production. Soy foods and sodas can cause a reduction in thyroid hormone. Certain food allergies and selenium deficiency are linked to autoimmune thyroid dysfunction3,4. Heavy metal exposure through air, water, dental fillings etc. have been linked to poor thyroid function. Remember that thyroid disease is never just as simple as taking a medication whether it is bio-identical or not. Thyroid dysfunction has a cause. An astute physician will take an active roll in care and seek to perform a comprehensive exam and laboratory work up that will identify the cause. Keep in mind that your body has the ability to make its own thyroid hormone providing that all the essential nutrients necessary are present in the diet or through supplementation, providing that the environment is conducive to the expression of good health, and providing that the individual is properly educated in the care of his/her body. Many patients that come to me initially are taking some form of thyroid medication. Many were instructed that the medication was a life long necessity. And in many it is very common that the medication becomes unnecessary. For more information, contact Dr. Osborne at 281-240-2229 or visit www. TownCenterWellness.com H Moncayo R, et al. Focus CareS David Coyle Stafford Municipal School District’s Volunteer Extraordinaire!

H

ow do school districts like SMSD provide their children with rich, relevant experiences? One way is through community volunteers like David Coyle who share their advanced knowledge and skills. Since the Robotic Club’s inception in 2008, Coyle has volunteered on Fridays and Saturdays to assist students with his engineering and computer programming expertise. Under Coyle’s guidance, the students have eagerly participated in numerous robotic competitions. This year, he helped club members build robots for the BEST, VEX, and FIRST competitions. Club president, Charles Anderson, says that without Coyle’s assistance the team couldn’t have designed and built robots meeting the guidelines in place at FIRST’s state-wide competition in March at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Coyle, a Cal-Berkely graduate with over 30 years of engineering experience with Pullman-Kellogg and KBR, was asked to assist the Robotics Club students by Stafford High School science instructor, Dr. Marilyn Szentirmay. Having known Coyle for years, she felt confident that his

competitive and a lot of fun to work with, Coyle says that “Robotics is a great program for helping students learn engineering aspects and teamwork.” Stafford High School Principal Rebecca Benedict notes “Volunteers like Coyle make a tremendous impact on our students.” Robotics Club co-sponsor, Frank Hoang, adds that Coyle helps connect engineering, math, and science for students in a way that’s fun and encourages them to want to learn more. The Stafford Robotics Club hosted a major robotics competition with over 1,000 participants in November. Club members wrote on their webpage, “Just to let y’all know that we love robotics, and we’re very competitive.” Stafford MSD appreciates and commends Coyle for the time and dedication he contributes to enriching its students’ learning experiences. Riverstone Model Home Extravaganza Slated for May 9-22 To celebrate seven new models this spring, Riverstone is opening the doors to all 15 of its model homes in its Model Home Extravaganza, May 9-22. New Marketing and Advertising Firm Strikes Chord with Small Business Owners

You feel the difference the minute you walk in the front door. The colors are bright and inviting, and the creative ideas seem to literally pop off the walls. Still, there is something even more noticeable about the experience...there are no high pressure sales people trying to sell you something you don’t need. Since opening their doors in mid February, The Marketing Department (TMD) has been flooded with small business owners trying to see this new concept for themselves. It usually starts with the question, “What exactly do you do?” While the name captures the essence, the concept of a retail style marketing and advertising firm causes some people to do a double take. “TMD provides customized strategies and creative materials to help you sell more products and services to more customers, more often, for more money.” says the owner Howard Spencer. “We offer free consultations, and we take the time to get to you know you before we make any recommendations.” The concept has taken off, and it really seems to have struck a chord with small business owners. Some have commented that they are either too busy or are not qualified to execute marketing strategies on their own, yet most can’t afford an inhouse marketing department. TMD offers an affordable alternative. Call 281-277-7272 to schedule a complimentary consultation or visit www. tmdtexas.com to learn more.

Power Up Your Stroke Knowledge Learn more about stroke risk factors, warning signs and treatment options

M

ay is National Stroke Awareness Month and HealthSouth Sugar Land Rehabilitation Hospital is raising awareness with their annual stroke month campaign, Stroke2Strong. By providing education about stroke risk factors and symptoms, HealthSouth’s goal is to help many residents of Fort Bend County reduce their risk. According to the American Heart Association, each year about 795,000 Americans experience a new or recurrent stroke. Cerebrovascular accident, also known as CVA or stroke, strikes someone every 40 seconds, and every four minutes someone dies from a stroke. Stroke is also the leading cause of disability in the United States, but recent surveys have found that less than 40 percent of Americans know the most common warning signs of stroke. The warning signs of stroke include sudden: • Numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body; • Confusion, trouble speaking or understanding; • Trouble seeing in one or both eyes; • Trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; or • Severe headache with no known cause.

Certain risk factors for stroke are hereditary, while others may result from lifestyle choices. Some of the risk factors for stroke that can be changed, treated or controlled are high blood pressure, cigarette smoking, diabetes, carotid or other artery disease, atrial fibrillation, poor diet, physical inactivity or obesity. A healthcare professional can help you make changes in your health routine and lifestyle that can lower your risk for stroke. Many stroke survivors can benefit from medical rehabilitation as part of the recovery process. Rehabilitation can help survivors make the improvements that mean the difference between returning home or staying in an institution. According to the American Stroke Association, 60 - 80 percent of stroke survivors could benefit from an intense stroke rehabilitation program. “It is important for the public to realize how important immediate treatment and rehabilitation are to the stroke recovery process,” said Dr. Gregory Burton, medical director of HealthSouth Sugar Land Rehabilitation Hospital. “Rehabilitation restores function, teaches people with disabilities new ways to perform daily activities and provides education and support for the stroke survivor and family. Going along with our theme for stroke month this year, the rehabilitation at our hos-

S enior L iving g uide Treating Leaky Bladders Can Help Improve Women’s Health

T

here are over 28 million women with urinary incontinence in the U.S. and more than 15 million of those women experience stress urinary incontinence (SUI), the loss of urine when exercising, coughing, sneezing and performing other activities. SUI is the most prevalent form of urinary incontinence and most commonly develops as a result of pregnancy and childbirth. What many don’t realize is that SUI isn’t just an annoyance – it’s a medical condition, that left untreated, can have serious consequences. Isolation, anxiety, and depression are some of the many health risks that can be associated with SUI. The condition can also limit or stop a person’s participation in enjoyable activities, thus negatively impacting social and/or work situations. Leaky bladders make exercising difficult, which can lead to weight gain. Wet skin due to constant leakage may be associated with skin rashes and skin infections. SUI can also increase the risk of repeated urinary tract infections.

Patients are often advised to try special exercises or make lifestyle changes. Surgery is also sometimes an option. However, exercise and lifestyle changes are often not effective, and many women do not want the risks and long recovery time associated with surgery. For these women, there have been limited options, until now. A new non-surgical treatment called Renessa® has opened the door for office procedures for women who don’t want surgery. With Renessa®, a small device inserted into the urethra gently heats small areas of tissue at the base of the bladder. This heating causes natural collagen in the tissue to become firmer, which can lead to a decrease in leaks. The treatment can be performed in a doctor’s office and requires about an hour. The full treatment effect is typically seen within 60 to 90 days, although some women see improvement sooner. Overall, 75% of patients are improved. “We use a little local anesthetic

for numbing so the patients are very comfortable during the procedure. Most women go back to their normal routine the same or the next day,” said Dr. Carlos R. Hamilton III, a local physician offering Renessa®. Side effects of Renessa® are typically mild and temporary and most resolve shortly after treatment. Reported complications include dysuria (discomfort during urination), hematuria (blood-tinged urine), urinary tract infection, and urine retention (inability to empty the bladder). Infrequently, worsening incontinence symptoms have been reported. “There’s no cutting or bleeding, and people can literally walk out of the office,” said Dr. Hamilton. “I believe in helping people, and so far everyone has been very happy.” To determine if you are a candidate for the minimally invasive Renessa procedure or to schedule a consultation with Dr. Hamilton, please call 281265-0033. S enior L iving g uide Fight Preventable Cancers: Jump-Start Your Healthy Summer Lifestyle

I

f you could take five steps to prevent cancer, would you? According to a recent World Cancer Research Fund and American Institute for Cancer Research study, one in three common cancers may be preventable – and a healthy lifestyle is key. The team at Texas Oncology–Sugar Land suggests getting your summer off to a healthy start – no matter your age – by considering five things that can improve overall health and protect against cancer: 1. Eat right. Take advantage of the summer’s bounty. Managing weight and eating a well-balanced diet full of

powerful nutrients may bolster your body’s defenses against cancer and other diseases. 2. Get screened. Understand which cancer screenings are appropriate for you and schedule an appointment. Screenings allow for diagnoses at the earliest stages when treatment will be most effective. 3. Be active. Enjoy what Fort Bend County offers! Whether you prefer hiking, swimming, walking, or biking, summer is an ideal time to increase physical activity. 4. Save your skin. Texas Oncology wants Texans to outsmart the sun’s

harmful rays. While skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, it is also very preventable by limiting exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun. 5. Do not smoke. Lung cancer is often preventable. Not smoking is the most important way to reduce your risk. Opened in 2003, the Texas Oncology – Sugar Land office is located at 1350 First Colony Boulevard, and serves patients and families throughout the Fort Bend region. For more information about Texas Oncology–Sugar Land, please call 281-277-5200 or visit www.TexasOncology.com. H

n an ongoing study by Fidelity Investments, research has found that the average 65-year-old couple will incur $230,000 in medical expenses throughout retirement. So what kind of savings does a typical American household have to cover this enormous looming bill? $18,000. The service built to fill this gap is Medicare, a federal program designed to provide medical insurance for those age 65 and older, or individuals with certain disabilities. There are four parts to Medicare, each of which serves a different function. Part A covers hospital care, and is generally free for most enrollees. Doctor services are covered under part B; users are required to pay a premium for this program. Part C is also called Medi-Gap insurance. These are private policies that fill in the “holes” left by Medicare limits. In order to obtain a Medi-Gap policy, you must have both parts A and B. The newest addition to Medicare is Part D, which was created in 2006 to cover prescription drugs. To be eligible for coverage under Medicare, you must have worked in the US for at least 10 years. Enrollment begins three months prior to your 65th birthday; if you choose to delay enrollment into Part B, you will be charged a 10 percent penalty for each 12-month period after you turn 65. This penalty will continue throughout your use of Medicare. Medicare is a complex federal program. Consult your financial planner or medical specialist if you have questions about the program. S enior L iving g uide The Importance of Innovative Sensory Activities: A Detailed Look at Changing Sensory Experiences for Individuals Living With Alzheimer’s How to develop and create sensory-based activities for a family member living with Alzheimer’s

F

or individuals living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of memory impairment, ongoing changes in appetite and behavior, or differing reactions to sounds and colors, are often confusing to caregivers and family members. Differences in behaviors or diminished interest in activities may be indicative that your loved one’s sensory experiences are changing. If you begin to notice changes in your loved one’s ability to smell, see, feel or hear, consult your doctor to eliminate medical reasons for these changes. Explore new activities that accommodate your loved one’s chang-

ing sensory-input needs. These indicators can help guide you as you try to determine if you loved one is encountering changing sensory experiences. • SMELL – Smell directly affects an individual’s ability to recognize hunger. If you notice that your loved one loses their appetite or no longer seems to be hungry on a regular basis, they may be experiencing a loss in their sense of smell. • SIGHT – An individual experiencing vision loss may begin to bump into furniture or be surprised if you approach them from behind. Or, they may no longer be interested in reading or participating in other craft activities

that require good eyesight. • SOUND – This sense usually remains intact longer than the others. If you begin to notice your loved one no longer responding to familiar sound cues or becoming uninterested in listening to the radio or watching TV, it may be because their ability to process sound has diminished. The most important thing to remember during this process is to provide your loved one creative and engaging activities based on their current sensory abilities and disease stage. Working together you will be able to make new memories to last a lifetime. H

dvanced Foot and Ankle Specialists and Dr. Lee specialize in adult and pediatric reconstructive foot and ankle surgery including bunions, hammertoes, nerve decompression, ankle instability and tendon repair. We also offer in-office Ultrasound guided non-invasive foot and ankle procedures for treatment of plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, tendon injuries, joint pain and arthritis. If you experience tingling or numbness in your toes, or sometimes feel like you are walking on a pebble, you may have a neuroma. A neuroma usually forms due to an irritation of a nerve passing between the bones in your foot. Tight, narrow shoes and high-heels may aggravate this condition. Initial treatment is usually effective, simple, and non-surgical. Be sure to let our staff or Dr. Lee if you experience this condition. We are proud to be one of the few locations in Texas to offer the new PinPointe FootLaser, recently introduced after years of research and development. Fungal nails, otherwise known as Onychomycosis, often present as yellowish discoloration and thickening with underlying debris on the toenails. Most commonly seen on the large toes, these changes can occur on any or all of the nails. The laser solution was developed by researching various spectrums of light to determine the one that would pass through the nail without damaging it, yet be able to vaporize the germs and kill the fungus that lives under the nail. The PinPointe FootLaser is a major leap forward in medical technology to safely treat toenail fungus. If you experience any nail fungus symptoms such as thick, brittle or discoloration, please ask our staff for a complimentary laser consultation. Call Advanced Foot and Ankle Specialists, Y. enous disease and varicose veins affect between 40 to 50% of the population of the United States of America. Although the majority are symptom free, many suffer night cramping, heaviness, aching or pain and swelling of the legs that may require treatment. Our legs have a rich network of veins that are interconnected. There is a deep system which is the main outflow for the blood to return to the heart and a superficial system which is an alternative route for the blood. It is not essential and in normal circumstances, we can live without it. Our veins are equipped with “one way” valves that allow blood to flow in one direction only. When they are faulty, blood will “reflux” into the leg causing distention of the veins (varicose veins). Venous insufficiency, venous reflux and venous incompetence are synonymous. Risks factors are: age, female gender, pregnancy, family history, standing for long periods of time, previous blood clots, etc. Leg elevation and support hose usually alleviate the symptoms temporarily. Spider veins are small venous branches on the skin. They are usually painless. Dr. Baltazar has vast experience treating venous insufficiency, varicose veins and venous stasis ulcers using laser and radiofrequency. Sugar Land Vein Specialists is committed to offering you the best possible treatment for venous insufficiency in Fort Bend County, by the same doctor every time. 65 years and older. They are specially-trained to prevent and manage the unique and sometimes multiple health needs of older adults—including arthritis, osteoporosis, memory loss, and mobility problems. They act as a spokesperson, counselor and mediator to help their patients navigate through an often complicated maze of specialists and subspecialists. Geriatricians treat more than the physical illness; they recognize how health conditions affect seniors socially and emotionally. Family or caregiver input is regularly sought and taken into consideration, and their wellbeing is an extension of the treatment plan. Progress Continues to Bring Life Back to the Imperial Redevelopment The Johnson Development Corp. has entered into a contract to begin the preliminary phase of the historic Char House renovation. Over the next four months, a majority of tanks, pipes, smoke stacks and other process equipment will be removed from the building to make way for the build-out of its final intended use. “We are excited to start this cleanup phase of the refinery site,” said Shay Shafie, General Manager of the Imperial Redevelopment. “Removing all of the equipment will allow us to start focusing on the highest and best use for this historic building.” All of the work on the Char House will be done internally protecting the exterior of the building with the exception of the smoke stack removal which spans from the third floor through the roof. The solid concrete smoke stacks

must be removed for safety reasons and to allow for flexibility of the added build-out space. “We plan to replicate the stacks with a non-structural building material in the future in order to preserve the exterior look of the Char House,” said Shafie. Meticulous care has been taken by Johnson Development to preserve the historical significance of the entire Imperial site. The developer has worked directly with the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation to insure that the rich history of Imperial has been preserved while bringing the structures to a safe and habitable condition. Several artifacts have been tagged by the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation to be preserved and incorporated into the development. Plans for Imperial, a 700 acre Master-Planned Community located

in Sugar Land, Texas, include the redevelopment of the historic Imperial Sugar Company refinery site and the preservation of several of the iconic structures dating back to the early 1900’s. Imperial has also been selected as the site for the City of Sugar Land’s new minor league baseball stadium which has been aptly named the StarTex Power Field. Just over a year ago, Johnson Development was selected as Imperial’s development manager by Cherokee Sugar Land LP and the State of Texas General Land Office. Johnson’s charge is to bring life back to the old Imperial Sugar Refinery site with a mix of retail, commercial, hospitality, restaurants, office and urban residential land structures. The master plan also includes a significant amount of land across from the Sugar Land Regional Airport being dedicated for the City’s next professional business and technology park. For more information about Imperial, visit www.imperialsugarland.com.

Ceremonial Home Plate Installed at StarTex Power Field Groundbreaking The ceremonial installation of home plate at the future site of StarTex Power Field marked an historic milestone for professional baseball in Sugar Land. Sugar Land’s $27.9 million minor league baseball stadium is expected to be ready for opening day in April 2012. The stadium will be funded with a portion of sales tax revenues that may only be used for economic development purposes. No general fund tax dollars will be spent on the stadium. In addition to the stadium serving as a community amenity, a conservative cost-benefit analysis performed by Conventions, Sports & Leisure International conservatively estimates the project will generate economic activity annually of approximately $7.7 million or a net return of $169 million over 30 years on the investment of the City of Sugar Land and Opening Day Partners.

Pictured installing home plate are Opening Day Partners, Chairman Peter Kirk and Mayor James Thompson. They were joined by (L-R) Greg Wine, Shay Shafie, Doug Goff, Larry Johnson, Deacon Jones, Chris Hill, Jeff Gerber, Matt O’Brien, Jon Danos, Keith Schnetzer, Frank Boulton, Tim Webster, Russell Jones, Michael Schiff, Jacqueline Baly Chaumette, Thomas Abraham, Chuck Greco, Donald G. other’s Day is supposed to be a day of celebration! One to exalt the best of the best in the family! This film of the same name puts a completely different spin on the holiday and the true definition of mother. Rebecca De Mornay’s Mother is a devilishly delightful villain whose charm, poise and intelligence is reminiscent of quiet, time-biding predator roles traditionally played by men. She pulls all the strings in this macabre game of cat and mouse, keeping cool while chaos unfolds and spills out all around her. She’s misery personified: mean, malevolent, and murderous. She accomplishes all her evil with her hands primly folded, never once raising her voice and without turning a hair. Her children are vicious - Ike (Patrick Flueger), Addley (Warren Cole) and Johnny (Matt O’Leary). Things really go nuts in the beginning of the film

and, after one of them is wounded, they head home to Mother’s house, only to find Mother was evicted and the Sohapis have moved in. The new tenants they overtake are Daniel and Beth Sohapi (Frank Grillo and Jaime King). The new tenants are a surprise, but not much of a hindrance. The boys send out a distress call, and the Koffins are reunited when Mother and their sister Lydia (Deborah Ann Woll) join them. As luck might have it, there is a serious storm brewing (why does this always happen?). The phone lines are down and the stores are closed, which take all the law enforcement folks off the trail of the pursuit in order to deal with the impending storm. Held hostage along with Daniel and Beth are a half-dozen friends who were there for a small party. As the horrific evening unfolds, one can only imagine

the mayhem that takes place. Director Darren Lynn Bousman does a tremendous job with this picture and all of the performances were charismatic and consistent throughout the film. While this isn’t the kind of movie where any one actor stands out beyond the rest, it is clear they all played off each other perfectly. Of special note, De Mornay is simply brilliant and worthy of awards consideration for her icy performance. I wouldn’t recommend you take your mom to see Mother’s Day unless you want her to get the wrong idea. H Mother’s Day Starring: Jaime King, Patrick Flueger & Rebecca De Mornay Director: Darren Lynn Bousman Now Showing: In Local Theatres MPAA Rating: NR Grade: B

High School HOT SHOT

By Melinda Wood

Kathryn Conquers It All

A

s Kathryn Kluge wraps up her senior year at Dulles High School this month, she looks back at all the golf, clubs, late nights and laughter that filled her high school career. Lettering twice in golf and once in academics, Kathryn has an incredible work ethic that is unmatched by many her age. Between golf, PALS, schoolwork and a part-time job, Kathryn is often amazed at how she fits it all in. Always making those around her laugh, Kathryn jokingly attributes her energy to magic fairy dust, but truthfully knows that if she has “the right mindset, she can conquer anything.” Kathryn has an outlook on life and determination to succeed that is sure to serve her well as she starts college this fall at Texas State University as a business major.

Kathryn

Excited about going off to school, Kathryn says she isn’t scared to leave home and can’t wait to see what college has in store for her. “As much as my mom is going to hate this, I can’t wait to get away,” Kathryn says with a laugh. “But seriously, I’m excited to show my mom that she’s raised me right.” Kathryn adds, “It was just me and my mom until I was about 10. She would teach me how to tie my shoes, how to do laundry… how to survive. I’m not worried about how I’ll do on my own because I know my mom taught me how to do everything for myself from a young age.” But, Kathryn says one part of her life at home she will miss is spending time with her little brothers. “I will miss seeing my little brothers grow up,” Kathryn says. “I was with them through teething and potty training. I take them to movies when I have the time. I’ll miss that a lot, but that just means I will cherish it more when we do have time together.”

Kathryn shares, “It’s a great feeling to go to talk to the children and help them find something special within themselves...” fort bend

A member of the varsity girls’ golf team, Kathryn and her teammates finished third place in district. Even though she can’t be there next year, Kathryn is excited to see what her teammates accomplish next season. Golf has been a part of Kathryn’s life long before she entered high school, and she distinctly remembers playing with a set of plastic golf clubs at five years old. Though her high school days are near the end, Kathryn plans to always keep golfing in her life for the love the sport. “I love just doing my thing out on the course,” Kathryn says. “It’s like a Zen session for me. I can just relax and let go. Whatever happens, happens.” But Kathryn is also a leader off the course as she participates in Peer Assisted Leadership (PALS). At Dulles High School, more than 200 juniors apply for the program, and only about 45 make the cut as Seniors. Honored to be a part of the group, Kathryn’s favorite part is working firsthand with elementary students and serving as “someone they can look up to.” Kathryn shares, “It’s a great feeling to go and talk to the children and help them find something special within themselves. Watching them grow up is so rewarding. I’m glad I can just be one of those people they can go to or talk to. It’s just awesome to be an older kid that they would look up to and one day hope to be like you.” With the strong foundation and positive spirit that Kathryn has, it’s clear that she has a lifetime filled with plenty of success and even more smiles ahead of her. Good luck Kathryn! H

New Executive Director at Fort Bend Family Promise Fort Bend Family Promise, the only homeless assistance program in the county dedicated to providing temporary shelter to families Vera Johnson with children, has named Vera Johnson to the position of Executive Director after an extensive search. Joe Sullivan, Board President said, “We are thrilled with the vast experience and knowledge in working with homeless and other at-risk populations that Ms. Johnson brings to our program. She has a deep, grounded sensitivity and passion for this interfaith work with children and families in crisis.” Johnson comes to Family Promise with nearly twenty years of experience in the non-profit sector. Most recently, she has served as Vice President of Program Operations for the Coalition for the Homeless/Houston & Fort Bend Counties. She and her 17-year-old son reside in Sugar Land. “I have always believed the shortest distance between a problem and a solution is the distance between your knees and the floor. Through this belief, I hope to bring to the program a unique blend of faith, honesty, a down to earth style, and ability to help homeless children and their parents find their way back home to permanent housing,” says Johnson. Fort Bend Family Promise, which was founded six years ago, is part of a national program that operates affiliates in 41 states. It relies on a network of local Fort Bend congregations to house and feed the families on a rotational basis while they work to regain self-sufficiency. Since its inception in 1998, more than 300,000 men, women, and children have been helped through Family Promise programs around the country. Last year, 76% of guest families found permanent or transitional housing upon completion of the program. If you would like to learn more about how to get involved with Fort Bend Family Promise, please contact their office at (281) 403-3923. H

Six Memorial Hermann Hospitals Named Among the Nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® by Thomson Reuters

Six Memorial Hermann hospitals have been named among the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® by Thomson Reuters, a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare. Memorial Hermann’s hospitals were the only ones in the Houston-area to earn the recognition. The Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals® study evaluates performance in 10 areas: mortality; medical complications; patient safety; average patient stay; expenses; profitability; patient satisfaction; adherence to clinical standards of care; post-discharge mortality; and readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure, and pneumonia. The study has been conducted annually since 1993. Collectively, Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital, Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital, Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital and Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital were awarded in the teaching hospitals category. For the second year in a row, Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital was recognized in the medium community hospitals category. And, for the first time, Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital was awarded in the small community hospitals category. “Memorial Hermann is gratified that six of our hospitals were rated by Thomson Reuters to be among the Top 100 U.S. hospitals in 2011,” said Michael Shabot, M.D., chief medical officer for Memorial Hermann. “Thomson Reuters provides an objective evaluation based on calculations made on publicly reported quality, safety and patient satisfaction measurements from all hospitals in the country. The result of those calculations is that six Memorial Hermann hospitals

were ranked in the upper 1 percent of all hospitals in the country. We want only the best for our patients and this recognition indicates we are delivering it.” To conduct the 100 Top Hospitals study, Thomson Reuters researchers evaluated 2,914 short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals. They used public information — Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data, and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website. Hospitals do not apply, and winners do not pay to market this honor. The winning hospitals were announced in the March 28 edition of Modern Healthcare magazine. “This year’s 100 Top Hospitals award winners have delivered exemplary results, despite volatility from healthcare reform,” said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president at Thomson Reuters. “The leadership teams at these organizations have dealt with enormous ambiguity, yet remained focused on mission and excellence, which drove national benchmarks to new highs.” If all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those treated in the award-winning facilities: • Nearly 116,000 additional patients would survive each year. • More than 197,000 patient complications would be avoided annually. • Expense per adjusted discharge would drop by $462. • The average patient stay would decrease by half a day. If the same standards were applied to all inpatients, the impact would be even greater. More information on this study and other 100 Top Hospitals research at www.100tophospitals.com. As part of their continued relationship, Methodist Orthopaedic Specialists of Texas conducts weekly sports medicine clinics at Sugar Land’s Lost Creek Park, Eclipse’s home field, and will provide VIP cards to expedite treatment at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital and at Methodist Orthopaedic Specialists of Texas. The Club also plans to team up again with MSLH on other initiatives that can benefit the community, such as the recent Score for the Cause fundraiser in support of breast cancer awareness and treatment which raised over $3750 for the Methodist Sugar Land Hospital/ Fort Bend Junior Service League Breast Cancer Fund. “Methodist Orthopaedic Specialists of Texas has a long history of being deeply involved in supporting youth sports and keeping young athletes healthy, fit and in the game,” said Chris Siebenaler, CEO of Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “We’re proud to extend our relationship with Eclipse and to be an important part of the Club’s effort to develop successful athletes at all levels of competition.” Methodist Sugar Land Hospital will continue as the primary jersey sponsor of the Eclipse recreational program. Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Breast Center Expands with Open House Scheduled for May Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s new Breast Center has just completed a significant expansion to provide even more services to Fort Bend and surrounding counties. To commemorate the expansion, Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is inviting the community to attend the Breast Center Open House on May 17th at 5:30 p.m. Since opening its doors on August 1, 2009, the Breast Center rapidly outgrew its original facility. “We are meeting a very real need in the community,” said Stephen Phillips, M.D., board-certified breast radiologist. “The center is staffed by a multi-disciplinary team of breast care specialists, working together to provide the most comprehensive care possible in one convenient location. That is a combination that is difficult to beat and one our community is taking advantage of and using.” In response to the increasing demand for services, the Breast Center recently moved to its new location off of Town Center Blvd., still on the Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Campus. The larger space features a warm, comforting ambiance and more comfortable, spa-like furnishings to put patients at ease. Available at the relocated Breast Center is a full range of diagnostic services, including: • Digital mammography • Breast MRI • Diagnostic ultrasound • MRI-guided biopsy • Ultrasound biopsy • Stereotactic biopsy • Fine needle aspiration • Ductogram

Stephen Phillips, M.D. and Sandra Templeton, M.D.

The Breast Center’s full-time breast radiologists are exclusively dedicated to breast care. They read every image taken in the Breast Center and perform procedures with the use of state-of-theart technology. Having this full-service expertise available to patients every day is unique to Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. When choosing a Breast Center to meet your needs, it does make a difference where you go. Patients who choose the Breast Center at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital can undergo a mammogram and, if necessary, an ultrasound or MRI often on the same day, pending insurance approval. In addition, all biopsies are sent to the on-site pathology department. “We are providing the full continuum of care – from screening all the way through surgery or radiation – all in one place. Having a dedicated center enables our physicians to communicate with one another more effectively and coordinate care more efficiently, which means the women are able to begin treatment immediately,” Phillips said. fort bend

In addition to providing the only fullservice breast cancer screening and care in Fort Bend County, the Methodist Sugar Land Breast Center’s technology is second to none. The powerful whole body 3 Tesla MRI machine – typically found only in the nation’s top academic medical centers – provides state-of-the-art image resolution and features bilateral breast imaging and computer assisted detection. “No other Fort Bend County hospital has a 3T MRI,” Phillips said. In the event of a cancer diagnosis, the Breast Center can coordinate all additional care with the hospital’s Cancer Center on campus and with the skilled breast surgeons, oncologists and reconstructive surgeons on staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “As a breast surgeon at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, I work closely with the breast care team to ensure continuity of care for each patient,” said Sandra Templeton, M.D., board-certified surgeon specializing in breast surgeries and on staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “Since treatment should be as individual as patients, we are dedicated to providing a wide variety of cancer treatments from leading-edge radiation and oncology methodologies to surgical options.” To schedule a mammogram at the Breast Center, please call 281-242-PINK (7465).H

Open House Invitation The community is invited to attend the Methodist Breast Center Open House on Tuesday, May 17th from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Please RSVP by calling 281-276-8468.

Four Methodist Hospitals Make U.S. News & World Report’s Best Metro-Area Hospitals List U.S. News & World Report named four hospitals within The Methodist Hospital System to its inaugural Best Metro Area Hospitals list, with The Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center taking the top spot in the Houston metropolitan area. Methodist’s flagship location has more than twice the number of nationally ranked specialties than any other Houston-area hospital. The Methodist Hospital, San Jacinto Methodist Hospital, Methodist Sugar Land Hospital and Methodist Willowbrook Hospital were recognized among the best in the Houston area based on a record of high performance in key specialties. Methodist system hospitals ranked as follows: • The Methodist Hospital – No. 1 • San Jacinto Methodist Hospital – No. 8 • Methodist Willowbrook Hospital – No. 13 • Methodist Sugar Land Hospital – No. 18 “This impressive showing by our hospitals, and our consistent ranking by U.S. News over the past two decades, highlights our commitment to our patients throughout the Houston area,” said Ron Girotto, president and CEO of The

Methodist Hospital System. “Having all of our eligible hospitals ranked is an honor and a testament to the quality of health care our physicians and staff provide our community every day.” U.S. News ranked hospitals within all 52 U.S. metro areas with populations of one million or more, using existing data from the 2010-11 Best Hospitals list. The metro rankings identify hospitals that scored in the top 25 percent among its peers and performed nearly as well as the nationally ranked Best Hospitals in at least one of 16 adult specialties.

The new rankings add 490 of these high-performing hospitals to the 132 nationally ranked Best Hospitals in the metro areas. The metro area rankings will be updated in July at the same time the 2011-12 national Best Hospitals rankings are posted online. The metro rankings are online at www.usnews.com/hospitals. Sunrise Surprise

tart Mother’s Day off right with a beautiful breakfast in bed. A pretty tray set with some of the good dishes and real linens, a fresh flower, and some delicious food will put a smile on mom’s face that will last all day. Golden Sunrise French Toast is made extra special with evaporated milk and a splash of vanilla extract. Make sure you use firm bread so the toast doesn’t end up soggy. If she loves eggs, making Scrambled Eggs with a little evaporated milk gives them such a creamy texture that she’ll want to eat them this way all the time. Add one tablespoon of evaporated milk for each egg used. Pour her a Mock Mimosa by mixing sparkling lime juice or ginger ale to orange juice. Garnish with a fresh strawberry on the rim of the glass. For more delicious ways to surprise mom on her special day, visit www. TheCookingMilk.com. H

Celebrating More Than Moms on Mother’s Day

E

very spring individuals celebrate their mothers on Mother’s Day. It has evolved from a day to honor mothers to one that recognizes all special women. Therefore, if there is a woman in one’s life who isn’t a biological mother -- but special nonetheless -- Mother’s Day can be a time to tell her how much she is appreciated. There are many reasons a person may want to honor a woman that is not his or her mother. Perhaps the person’s own mother has passed away or is not prominent in this individual’s life. Maybe there is a grandmother or aunt with whom one is especially close. There may be a teacher or mentor that has touched the life of a person in a special way. Although Mother’s Day is built around giving thanks to Mom, it’s certainly acceptable to thank women in addition to dear old Mom. Furthermore, one needn’t wait until a specific day in May to honor a notable woman. This can be done all year long with certain gestures and sentiments. For those who are celebrating all women on Mother’s Day, here are some ways to set the day apart. • Create a handmade card with personalized sentiments that reflect the unique relationship with this special woman. This can mean more than a prepurchased card that may not offer the right words. • Find out her interests and spend a day doing entirely what she wants to do. It doesn’t necessarily have to take place on Mother’s Day. A trip to a museum or a day at the park -- whatever it may be -- can be a nice outing.

Mother’s Day presents an opportunity to celebrate Mom and any other special women in your life. • Treat her to a special dinner. Ask about favorite foods and create a meal at home. If dining out is a must, choose a day other than Mother’s Day to avoid the crowds and have intimate moments with just the two of you, especially if you are also honoring your own mother on Mother’s Day. • Find something you both enjoy and then go and do that. Maybe you met up due to a hobby or interest. Remember the first day you met and reminisce by www.fortbend

heading to that place for a celebration. • Have an extended family fiesta. Host a Mother’s Day party at home and single out all the special women in attendance. Serve cocktails and enjoy the time spent together. Mother’s Day is a special time of the year to honor not only a person’s mom but also any other notable woman in his or her life. The holiday can be customized any way a person sees fit. H Source: metrocreativeconnection.com

Living the Sweet Life:

By Alisa Murray www.AlisaMurray.com Nationally recognized portrait artist and award-winning columnist.

This Mother’s Day Be in the Moment!

W

e live. We love. We loose... We loose that is, each other to life. The cycle of it all is something that everyone since time began has tried to explain and has always been the muse of the great artists. Where are we going, what have we done, and why are we here anyway? Mothers instinctively know what their purposes here are. Even for those who were unexpectedly surprised by the discovery of a new life growing inside of them, it suddenly becomes quite clear their most precious achievement is somewhere in the successes of the next generation. Is it not, after all, what makes the world go round? I remember as a child my own mother very briefly. Few pictures remain of her and very few still of her with me.

Pictures of her are what I longed for as a child, especially in times of great stress and sorrow, and equally in times of elation when life’s difficult milestones were completed with unspeakable joy. Mothers are, without any question, a necessary part of normal childhood development that broadly spans across multiple species. I know I would not be who I am today had I not lost my own at the age of eight. Her life, though short, I feel was taken for a reason. A life well-lived is not done so in years but in when it has achieved all it’s heart has dreamed of. I’ll never understand how anyone can see a sunrise and a baby being

born, or witness the will of the human spirit with all its might and question God’s grace. No one knows our soul’s code; however, I believe there are trace memories of our maker in each of us. One thing’s for sure: God is good. Mother’s Day for many is a time of being present in company with but not present in spirit with their own mothers. I ask you this season to spend it mindfully. Instead of going out to a restaurant and through the hazy noises of others hovering conversations, stay home and ask questions about life. Sit in the sun for a spell over a glass of lemonade and sing songs with her to your own children. Take a moment to be in the moment. Let life happen with you fully engaged in the moment. You’ll be surprised at what you discover! Take Care of You!
