The April 26 tour features 5 gardens –many are original homeowners—all have at least 10 years invested working their garden in Fort Bend’s first master planned community. Set along winding creeks, mature trees and open spaces, there’s not a cookie-cutter home or garden. All have faced major challenges in design, choosing interesting plantings, garden art as well as practical maintenance issues. A Tropical Demonstration includes a Plant Sale of hard-to-find tropical plants help you get something really unique for your summer garden! Proceeds benefit beautification projects and scholarships. Tickets are $10 and on sale Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m to 4 p.m at all tour locations. Follow the signs from FM 1092 and Hampton. For a map and more http://traction.typepad.com/QVTour

After two years of construction, the extension of the Fort Bend Parkway Toll Road has finally reached Sienna Parkway, thereby providing Sienna Plantation residents with the ease and convenience of toll road access directly from the master-planned community all the way to U.S. Highway 90A, just minutes from downtown Houston and the Texas Medical Center. The completed extension of the EZ tag-only Fort Bend Parkway from Highway 6 to Sienna Parkway is expected to reduce drive times from Sienna Plantation to points in Houston by 10-15 minutes, according to Sienna Plantation General Manager Alvin San Miguel. “The direct access to major employment corridors provided by the extended Fort Bend Parkway right from Sienna Plantation will be a major selling point as we continue to develop the community,” says San Miguel. A membersonly preview, with appetizers and wine, is scheduled from 4 p.m. – 5 p.m, and the event will be open to the general public from 5-7 p.m. The book, Richmond, is Arcadia Publishing’s next title in the popular series Images of America, and is written by local authors Clinton Drake and Theresa Jach. The photographs in this volume are from Fort Bend County Museum Association and Fort Bend County Libraries’ Genealogy and Local History Department. Clinton Drake is a courtappointed member of the Fort Bend County Historical Commission and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Friends of the Fort Bend County Historical Commission. Richmond resident Theresa Jach holds a doctorate in US history and teaches at Houston Community College–Northwest. Both authors have done extensive research on historic Richmond. Originally called “Fort Bend” and “Fort Settlement,” the city was a prosperous river port and became a boomtown with the completion of the first railroad in Texas in 1855. Images throughout the

book depict the well-known stories of the area and shed light on forgotten tales. The book chronicles one of the most notorious episodes in Richmond’s history the Jay Bird– Woodpecker War in 1888–1889, which led to a gun battle on the streets between the two political factions. Authors Drake and Jach also showcase Richmond’s notable historical figures, including Jane Long, “Mother of Texas;” Mirabeau B. Lamar, second president of the Republic of Texas; “Deaf” Smith, Texas Revolutionary scout; Carrie A. Nation, temperance activist with a penchant for smashing up saloons with a hatchet; and the late Hilmar Moore, longest-serving US mayor. Drake and Jach write, “Richmond, as the seat of Fort Bend County, is home to many historical government buildings and impressive homes, among them, the courthouse and the home of Jane Long.”
