Bomb sniffing Dog, Rumor, with U.S. troops in Iraq is guarding the packages received from TipOftheSpear.Org. TipOftheSpear. org received this picture from the U.S. troops in Iraq. As you can see, one of the adopted platoons is of the four legged kind! Meet Rumor, a bomb sniffing dog currently deployed to Iraq. His handler wrote this: “Hey got your packages thanks so much! “I unfortunately couldn’t get a picture with the guys because there’s a lot going on at the moment but I got one of Rumor for you! I will get a picture of all of us with Rumor for you later! Thanks again I’ll let you know what everyone liked!” Yes, there was a special package for Rumor! The handler asked TipoftheSpear not to send treats but to send toys. Working dogs military &
police are not allowed to have treats. Their treat is playing with their toys. Therefore, at the request of the Dog Handler, volunteers sent tennis balls, toys, frisbees, and a brush; things to help a working dog relax during off duty time. “Thanks to our generous donors and volunteers, Tip Of the Spear.org continues to support our deployed troops in hostile environments,” says Mary Williams, Tip of the Spear (www. tipofthespear.org) If you would like to join the mission you make a donation via Pay Pal at www.TipOfTheSpear.org or mail a check to Tip Of the Spear, PO Box 3083, Sugar Land, Texas 77487. Newland submits revised PD application for Telfair Tract
Newland Communities submitted a revised Planned Development (PD) zoning application for the Telfair Tract 5 property on May 16, according to a press release issued by the city of Sugar Land on Monday. The application is a proposal for about 87 acres, including the property at the southeast intersection of U.S. Highway 59 and University Boulevard. A PD application for the same property was suspended during 2015 because it did not fully comply with the City’s development code. The revised plan contains a mixture of proposed office, retail, restaurant and hotel uses, as well as an option for an agerestricted independent living facility for senior citizens. As proposed, the independent living facility, similar to a project in The Imperial development known as The Overture, could contain a maximum of 300 dwellings. The senior living facility, like all other proposed land uses, will be extensively reviewed and considered through a two-step PD zoning process. Staff is anticipated to complete an initial assessment of the application and provide comments to the applicant in early June if deficiencies or revisions are identified. The Planning and Zoning Commission is expected to review the application through workshop and public hearing meetings this summer. Mayoral candidate Joe Zimmerman repeated his previous statement: “My position is simple - THERE WILL BE NO APARTMENTS IN TELFAIR SOUTH. No apartments in Telfair South - means exactly that. No apartments.” He did not clarify if the proposed 300 dwelling units in Telfair are apartments or not.
Hancock endorses Jajoo
By SESHADRI KUMAR Sugar Land Mayoral candidate Myatt Hancock, who finished third in the May 7 city council elections, has endorsed Harish Jajoo for mayor in the June 11 run-off election. Hancock received 1,582 votes or 19.17 percent. Joe Zimmerman received 3,388 votes or 41.06 percent of the total votes cast, and Jajoo received the second most votes with 2,846 or 34.49 percent. Other opponents in the race were Kyle Stanley, 230 for 2.79 percent, and Sarwar Khan, 206 for 2.50 percent. Hancock ran on a slate with Diana Miller and Naomi Lam, under the banner Sugar Land Votes. One of the main planks of their platform was to roll back the Development Code pertaining to Planned Developments and remove the new zoning classification of “Urban” development, stipulating a
Hancock minimum of 4-stories. Jajoo had proposed a resolution, along with Zimmerman, calling for the reversal of the Development Code and added a new stipulation capping apartment units in PD to 200. The Planning and Zoning Commission has since rejected the city council resolution on
this subject. Hancock, issued a statement on Monday, declaring his support to Jajoo: “As you may know, I was a Mayoral candidate in the May 7th election. My platform was simple -fight for the families of our city and stand up to developers and apartment overgrowth. Unfortunately, I came up short in the election, but there is still a chance to have that message carried by someone who REALLY believes in it - Harish Jajoo. I’m giving Harish Jajoo my full support and endorsement in the runoff election. Harish understands the apartment issue, and he has been a proponent of a cap of 200 units...the same cap I proposed. While Harish’s opponent is interested in winning this election and saying what voters want to hear, Harish is interested in the future of our city...just
Fort Bend County DA dismisses forgery case
One of the cases referred to the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office in 2015 by the Fort Bend ISD police involving the use of counterfeit money was dismissed last week. Fort Bend County District Attorney John Healey said the case was “dismissed after a review of the evidence by my office, much of which was provided after the case was filed.” Healey said, “We are committed to our primary responsibility of ensuring that justice is done. Historically, my office has conducted presentations to students about their responsibilities and privileges concerning the law covering many topics. “Additionally, we are pleased to work with Fort Bend ISD to help educate students and their families about laws concerning forgery and the use of counterfeit money.” Fort Bend ISD Police Chief David Rider shared the facts about forgery and counterfeit
cases investigated by the District at a May 16 Board Meeting. While most of the District’s counterfeit or forgery cases have been solicited for investigation by a victim and not through a school-related transaction, it is imperative to be informed through these final weeks of our school year and as Fort Bend ISD students and their families head into the summer break, Rider said. Often in counterfeit cases, Fort Bend ISD police officers are the first people that students turn to for help, if they become a victim. To protect you and your family, here are some tips: •Be cautious when dealing with someone you don’t know. •Be cautious if someone wants to pay cash for a major transaction. If cash is the only option, meet your buyer at a financial institution. •Have a teller handle the transaction. •Scrutinize your bills of any denomination and in any trans-
action. While there are tools and traits to distinguish counterfeit, get to know the look, the texture and the print of your bill. Some traits just cannot be duplicated. In 2013, 2014 and 2015, the FBISD Police Department investigated seven total cases that were referred to the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office. Under the Texas Penal Code, forgery is a third degree felony. Fort Bend ISD works cooperatively with the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office, and both agencies are dedicated to providing a safe and secure learning environment for all FBISD students. Depending on the nature and seriousness of an alleged offense and available evidence/ witnesses, cases may be referred to the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office for charges. Violations of school rules are typically referred to the school administration for disciplinary processing with no other law enforcement involvement.
