‘Great Grow’ school garden competition

St. Theresa’s Catholic School students, proud parents and teachers, were all smiles as they displayed the 2014-2015 school-year progress of their garden at the Sugar Land Imperial Farmer’s Market on May 16. The children plan to continue to expand their garden and provide fresh vegetables for the needy. The event, sponsored by The Great Grow, a 501c3 organic school garden competition program, also included David Crockett Middle School students who worked at the event and will compete in the 20152016 school garden competition. Free yoga camp at George R. Brown Convention Center on June 21

By SESHADRI KUMAR The first International Day of Yoga will be held on Sunday, June 21,from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston to spread the message of yoga. The International Day of Yoga event at George R. Brown Convention Center is free and open to all. The Consulate General of India, Houston will conduct the celebration in close coordination with Patanjali Yogpeeth (USA) and numerous

other Yoga schools, institutions, and social and cultural organizations. The IDY celebration would bring together a large number of Houstonians including elected officials, and institutions to perform Yoga and actively participate in a number of free interactive Yoga sessions featuring Yoga demonstration by experts, and a ‘Yoga Fair’. Participants are encouraged to register online for free at the event website (http://

iyogadayhouston.org/) which is mandatory for participation. Kindly bring a photo ID. The website will carry frequent updates about the event. On 11 December 2014, the United Nations General Assembly declared 21st June as the International Day of Yoga receiving broad support from 177 member states, including the USA. In recognition of the 150th Juneteenth Anniversary, the Missouri City Juneteenth Celebration Foundation is set to kick off traditional and new events for its 2015 celebration with the first function scheduled for Monday, June 15. The Foundation is featuring a new twist to the “One Mile of Smiles” Parade, which will have a New Orleans Mardi Gras-style theme, creating excitement and fun for all. Be sure to bring your parasol and join in with the second line band as it marches to Thurgood Marshall High School for another spectacular performance: the battle of the bands. The scheduled events are: *The Scholarship Golf Tournament will be held at the Quail Valley Golf Course, 2880 La Quinta Dr. on Monday, June 15. This tournament helps raise scholarship funds for deserving students. Registration will begin at 7 a.m., shotgun start at 8 a.m. and the tournament at 9 a.m. The entry fee is $100 for individuals and $400 for a team. *The Community Service Awards Gala will be held at the City Centre at Quail Valley, 2880
