Ron Reynolds, Mayor Pro Tem Jerry Wyatt, Stafford Mayor Leonard Scarcella, Congressman Al Green, Parks & Recreation Director Larry Foos, Mayor Allen Owen, Parks Board President Llarance Turner, and Councilmembers Danny Nguyen, Robin Elackatt and Don Smith.
Nearly 1,000 people attended the great opening of Missouri City’s new, “awesome” and “impressive” Recreation and Tennis Center on Saturday, July 14. The 24,488-squarefoot facility has many amenities designed for all ages and the parking area has been doubled in size. In addition to the tennis courts and batting cages, the center has a full-size gymnasium complete with electronic scoreboards for basketball and volleyball buffs, two multipurpose rooms for community meetings and special events, a 3,300-square-foot cardioweight room with state-of-theart exercise equipment, a dance studio for yoga, boot camp, and spin, cheerleading, tumbling, karate and Zumba classes, and a Kid Zone. The building has an energy-efficient outdoor lighting system, new landscaping with several mature trees and a new storm sewer system and utilities. The $4.5 million amenity was built by Rosenberger Construction, LP. See CENTER, Page 3
Sugar Land’s proposed budget for 2013 is $181 million Sugar Land City Manager Allen Bogard presented a $181.6 million proposed budget for fiscal year 2013 to city council at their July 17 meeting. The general fund, which pays the majority of the city’s operating costs, got a 2.67 percent increase in order to support the higher costs of operating Sugar Land. The increases take into ac-
count implementing existing policies and completed projects, employee compensation and benefits and citywide technology needs as well as existing debt service requirements. Since Sugar Land has not received the certified tax roll for 2012, a tax rate was recommended to achieve the needed revenue to meet the expenditures. Actual tax rate will be ad-
opted by city council later. The proposed budget is based on a three percent increase to the effective tax rate (tax revenues from existing properties) plus new tax revenues in accordance with the city’s financial management policy. Sugar Land’s sales taxes have grown at a rate higher than anticipated for 2012. The fiscal year 2012 budget antici-
pated three percent growth in collections over the prior year. To date, Sugar Land is five and a half percent above expectations. In addition, residential development continues in Sugar Land, although at a slower pace than seen several years ago. Commercial growth is also expected to continue in Sugar Land. Currently there is the
Assistant City Manager Bill Atkinson, Mayor Pro Tem Wyatt, Mayor Scarcella and Tennis Committee Member Don Cooper after their inaugural match.

War of words on Facebook highlights House Dist. 26 race By SESHADRI KUMAR Facebook has become the battle ground for a nasty, political war of words in the Texas House District 26 race between supporters of Jacquie Chaumette and Rick Miller. Chaumette is supported by a local group called “Women of influence” who describe her as a “smart flower… among whole bunch of black, brown, blue suited guys” in the legislature. Miller is derisively dubbed a “country club Conservative” whose claim to be a “good Christian” is questioned by some others. Ironically, critical comments about Chaumette are not found on Rick Miller’s website or Facebook nor on
those of his supporters. But they are on the Facebook pages of Chaumette’s hard core supporters. Most of the criticisms about Chaumette seem to be made in private gossip and not in print or other media formats. While the comments on the Facebook may not reveal the nature of the supposed attacks, rebuttals by Chaumette’s supporter make it easy to understand the issues in play. Chaumette’s supporters have tried to rebut attacks and in the process have actually broadcast them on Facebook to people who would not have heard about them otherwise. Two of the topics widely discussed widely on line with
no requirement for proof, pro or con, relate to missing signs and gerrymandered redistricting. Some of the intemperate comments are listed below: Remember a few days ago when David Chaumette and his sons reported that they had spent the day replacing Jacquie Chaumette’s stolen signs. Well.... over half have already disappeared again. This is the same low class, nasty stuff that was going on in the Sheriff’s race this Spring. How can people claim to be “good Christians” and then not condemn this kind of behavior by a politician? And that includes the local press.......These two candidates are not the same.
ONE HAS MUCH HIGHER STANDARDS than the other, and yet at least one newspaper is pretending they are “equal.” (That would be this newspaper) The same poster notes: I know that the signs for both Jacquie Chaumette and her opponent on the vacant lot on the access road between CoAmerica Bank and FedEx on 59 were removed by the grass mowers. Don’t know what happened to the signs, but his has been replaced. More of the same low class garbage like the Sheriff’s race. Remember how Brady’s folks accused Troy Nehls of cutting down his own sign? Now Miller’s folks are claiming Jacquie
Chaumette is stealing their signs! Seems odd that they are starting this attack now -- and right after I started making an issue of this on Facebook (because I personally have picked up some of Jacquie’s thrown down where they definitely did not belong). Independent’s observation: Miller did not say Jacquie is stealing his signs. This is what he posted on his website: We have had several signs to disappear. For the large signs, in about 4 locations, the signs were on the ground and the poles were gone. My message to our campaign team is to not mess with my opponent’s signs, large and yard signs. I do not condone it nor
will we do it. Chaumette’s supporter: I have had two different sources (who do not know each other) tell me that Jacquie Chaumette’s opponent’s supporters are out telling some astounding lies about her. Please, please, please..... Support Jacquie. We need to get control of our governments again! And we definitely do not need any more elected officials who believe being dishonest is OK. Independent: The “astounding lies” are never revealed! Then, the arbiters of honesty move on to redistricting. Chaumette’s supporter: Only a couple of weeks left, See WAR, Page 4
