Sugar Land came together to make a difference. And the community sent a message loud and clear as the crowd outside the city hall at the Sugar Land Town Square chanted in unison, “We are Sugar Land, We are Texas, We are Americans, We are a Community of Respect and We stand together,” on Sunday, July 17. (See picture below) The peace and unity rally was in response to the recent killings of police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge. Mayor ProTem Amy Mitchel who took the initiative to mobilize the community said the idea was to send a message that Sugar Land, which is one of the

most diverse cities in the country, “would not tolerate any kind of hatred, especially to those who put their lives on the line on a daily basis. We stood together united in our respect for each other and our first responders.” There was a moment of silence for the officers, prayers from religious leaders of different faiths and a salute to the men and women in blue. After brief remarks by Sugar Land Mayor Joe Zimmerman, Imam Tauqer Shah of Maryam Islamic Center in New Territory, Sugar Land, Rabbi Lobell of Congregation Beth El, Missouri City, Pastor Simon Kipti of St. Laurence Catholic Church, Sug-

ar Land, and Acharya Gaurang Nanavati, spiritual leader of Chinmaya Mission Houston, representing the Hindu community, rendered the prayer, quoting from their respective scriptures. “Together, we stand united for our country and our nation. Unified and Strong, under One God,” Imam Shah concluded his prayer. Angie Gooden sang the National Anthem. Boy Scouts from the Ismaili community Club #992 and Faith Lutheran Church Club # 797 posted colors. Michele Fisher was the mistress of ceremony. —SESHADRI KUMAR
