A spectacular Diwali Dusshera Festival will be held the Constellation Field on Oct. 15, between the hours of 4-10 p.m. The 5th annual event at the stadium will have free balloons, merry-go round, free face painting, a petting Zoo , a Fire truck and free pony rides.

Shri Sita Ram Foundation, a non profit group, is organizing the festival, presenting the Indian culture and heritage extravaganza while taking the spectators on a journey of Indian mythological and cultural experience, highlighting the Triumph of Good over Evil ; brought to real life on stage with hundreds of artists dressed in colorful ethinic costumes acting, dancing, chanting and much more.

The festival has attaracted a capacity crowd during each of the prior years. It appeared to be similar to the Renaissance Festival or the Shakspearean

festival plus much more. The festival organizers touted attractions of nearly 60 colorful merchandise and ethnic food booths; a parade of over 50 floats, similar to the ones seen during the Macy’s Parade, where some people dress in period or mythological costumes , while others play music, and dance .

World War One is an area of interest for me. I liked seeing the planes that Fernando Delgado brought; he was full of knowledge about them, and I find that sort of thing compelling.

“The static displays of the uniforms and equipment were also of inter-

est to me, I am a Vietnam veteran, and comparing uniforms and equipment is always interesting.

“I also found the photos of the [Dew House] restoration compelling. There was a tremendous amount of work to be done, and I have to admire the skill of the men who did it.

“I could have spent a couple of more hours there, with no problem.

[Mr. Granto later added:] How could I have forgotten to mention the refreshments?

“The choice of refreshments was excellent; sausage and cheese, and little cream cheese balls rolled in

seeds. I liked the punch, too!

“I know that there had to be some people planning and executing the refreshments as well, and I feel bad about not mentioning them.”

The free exhibition remains open Sundays from 1-4 p.m. through November 20.

Partnership with Fort Bend ISD puts Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital athletic trainers on campus, saving young lives In the first few weeks of the 2016 high school football season, three local players were saved from life-threatening medical issues – thanks to quick responses from highly skilled athletic trainers provided through a unique partnership between Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital and Fort Bend Independent School District.

The program – now in its third year – places athletic trainers at each of Fort Bend ISD’s 11 high schools throughout the school year.

The athletic trainers are part of the hospital’s athletic training residency program and serve the schools as assistant athletic trainers, working with all teams and supporting the head athletic trainer’s work with varsity squads.

“Our athletic trainers bring a tremendous benefit to the campuses,” said Bill Wissen, athletic training outreach manager for the hospital and Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine.

“These are schools with large athletic programs, and in football, many have well over 200 participants. Our partnership with Fort Bend ISD enables us to provide the needed support for student-athletes without requiring additional funding from the school district.”

There when needed After an August scrimmage at Ridge Point High School in Missouri City, a varsity player complained to assistant athletic trainer Amanda Jagielo about abdominal pain. An examination convinced Jagielo that the player had a possible ruptured spleen, and she had his parents take him to the emergency room at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospi-

tal, where his injury was confirmed and life-saving treatment was performed.

After Ridge Point JV’s first regular season game, another player told Jagielo that he was experiencing “sharp neck pain.” She conducted a concussion exam and sent for the player’s father. By the time the athlete’s dad reached the field house, Jagielo had recognized a rapid decline in the player’s condition, and she suspected an epidural hematoma, or bleeding in the brain.

The player was immediately sent to the emergency room at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, and a CT scan confirmed the hemorrhage.

He was stabilized and transferred to Texas Children’s Hospital, where pediatric neurologists were able to stop the bleeding without surgery.

“Those are the ones that really scare you, because they can be easy to miss, and if the player goes home and goes to sleep, it can be fatal,” said Wissen. “Amanda’s training and skill made all the difference because she diagnosed his condition right away and, ultimately, saved his life.”

On the first day of football practice, a 14-year-old freshman at Bush High School in Richmond went into cardiac arrest just outside of the locker room. Fortunately, M.J. Schultz – the school’s assistant athletic trainer and a resident in Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s athletic training residency program – was on-site.

Schultz immediately ran to the player, and saw that he had no pulse and wasn’t breathing. He cleared the player’s airway and began CPR while one of the coaches brought

over the emergency defibrillator. It took three shocks to revive the player, who was later transported by air ambulance and underwent surgery to implant a pacemaker.

“There is absolutely no doubt that the outcome would have been different if M.J. had not been there, with his training and ability to react calmly and professionally,” said Wissen. “The pediatric cardiologist who implanted the pacemaker told us that M.J. had given the teenager ‘a second chance at life.’”

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is one of just five institutions in the country with an athletic training residency program that is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

In addition to being the official health care partner for Fort Bend ISD athletics – and more than 70 other schools throughout the region through its outreach efforts – the hospital is making tremendous strides in raising the level of care available at the high school level by educating the next generation of athletic trainers with the highest standards.

“More and more school districts are realizing that having proper coverage by skilled athletic trainers can save lives,” said Marie Charpentier, who coordinates the sports physical therapy and athletic training residency programs at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “Many school districts just don’t have enough athletic trainers on staff to handle the demands, and there is a real need for individuals with the highest level of training. Rural schools, especially, are clamoring for help. We’re

Missouri City plans to demolish unsafe home

By BARBARA FULENWIDER Missouri City City Council has taken steps to demolish a substandard house and pool in Quail Valley.

The house, at 2115 South Fountain Valley, backs up to the golf course and is considered a hazard to life or property. Council at their Oct. 3 meeting started the process the law requires for an entity to take actions to either repair or demolish.

The house, owned by an elderly couple, was damaged in 2008 when Hurricane Ike slammed the Houston area and it was never repaired. The husband died and two years ago the wife moved out.

The public was invited to speak and Laura Davidson, who lives next door to the health hazard and eyesore did. She told council members the house “was surrounded by 14 children who live within seven houses of this property.” Parents of the children, she said, are concerned about a child climbing the fence.

Davidson said “some kind of insurance situation went back and forth, after the hurricane damaged the house and the owners never repaired the roof, which has caused perpetual water damage.”

She asked council to address the situation immediately and do anything they can to expedite the demolition of the property “so we’re no longer in danger.” The neighbors will do anything they can to help improve the property.

“Please think hard about the people who live around

that property,” Davidson said.

After she finished speaking Mayor Allen Owen replied, “We are well aware of that house. Councilman (Floyd) Emery lives nearby too. There are steps we have to take legally. Tonight is the first step. It is a health hazard. It will be remedied.”

Councilman Emery, who represents Missouri City’s District D, said, “It’s an accident waiting to happen.”

He also told council that the city “had reached out to the children of the former owner just so they are aware of the proceedings going on.”

Owen asked if the taxes are current and was surprised when the answer was yes. He was told the previous owner is deceased and asked if there is a lien owner. Again the answer was yes and that it is a reverse mortgage.

Missouri City Attorney E. Joyce Iyamu told council she recently talked to the son of the previous owners and he told her he and his siblings intend to let the house go into foreclosure.

Iyamu said she will send out a notice of demolition tomorrow (Oct. 4) and the city will be able to legally demolish the structure and swimming pool in 37 days from when the notice goes out.

Then they tackled the swimming pool issue. Kirk Allen, a city building official, told council the house still has “a lot of personal possessions” in it. Councilman At Large Jerry Wyatt said the house needs mold remediation and asked Allen

to look into the cost of it.

City Manager Anthony Snipes said the city may need to come back with more money in order to get the properties up to code or demolished. He also said he has put together a team to work on identifying substandard properties that need immediate mitigation. “As far as pools,” he said, the team is “evaluating multiple ways to deal with them.”

When the swimming pool issue followed, the city again recommended demolition. Council was told that Chase Bank is the lien holder and that the city has sent a notice regarding the pool to their code enforcement department.

Owen said, “The city can cite responsible parties at any time. That’s the missing piece we have to lean on. The lien holder isn’t going to do anything until we get them in court and cite them. The owners of this house have been gone for two years. The neighbors have cut the grass out front but it’s four feet high in the back.”District D Councilman Don Smith asked the city manger for a list of substandard buildings in the city. Snipes said there are about 15 houses in Missouri City that are substandard and are “strategically around the entire city.

Some are occupied and in some cases the owners are addressing the issues.”

Council approved a motion to move forward with a 30-day notice to improve the house and pool in Quail Valley.

AUTOMOBILE: Lexus RC F

By BARBARA FULENWIDER Developed alongside the RC sports coupe, the RC F is an extension of the F brand heritage. First introduced for 2015 model year, the 2016 RC F is powered by a 467-horsepower version of the F-tuned 5.0-liter V8, backed up by a close-ratio eight-speed sports program direct shift transmission and available torque vectoring differential.

Lexus developed the RC F to excel on the track as well as the road. Body rigidity, suspension, brakes, tires and all other systems were developed with the expectation that RC F owners would be taking their cars to track day events.

There, they can enjoy the way the car’s electronically enhanced driveline enables average drivers to get closer to limits previously attainable only by trained professionals.

The same systems offer enhanced levels of active safety on the road.

T he 467 hor se power, 5.0-liter, 32 valve, DOHC V8 with direct and port injection, runs on the Atkinson cycle and when operating at cruising speeds enhances fuel economy. While the sound blasts outside from the RC F’s quad stacked tailpipes, there’s enough quiet inside to enjoy the standard premium sound system or optional Mark Levinson premium surround sound system.

Lexus developed a special chassis for the RC F that is suitable for rigorous track driving. Use of high-tensile steel sheet and aluminum helps keep weight low. The RC F offers a carbon fiber reinforced plastic roof and rear spoiler, which takes off more pounds.

Seventy percent of the RC F’s double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension differ from the RC. They include front and rear springs, dampers and stabilizer bars, suspension bushings and rebound stoppers.

The electric power-assisted rack and pinion steering has more feel. Intensive testing and calibration of the powerassist curve ensures that the

steering feel matches handling characteristics. The Lexus RC F owes much of its agility to three choices of 19-inch specially developed tire packages. The RC F uses a staggered wheel and tire setup, with 255/35R19 front and 275/35R19 rear tires. A flat tire repair kit in place of a spare tire saves vehicle weight.

The RC F comes standard with a Torsen LSD and offers the optional torque vectoring differential. During straightline driving, the Torsen differential controls the left-right speed differential to maintain straight-line stability. On entering corners, the coasting torque is distributed more to the outside wheel to help maintain stability. Mid-corner and on corner exit, the Torsen LSD distributes drive power according to the load on each rear wheel, to help ensure high traction and maneuverability.

The 2016 RC F offers the EXPERT mode of the vehicle dynamic integrated management (VDIM) system. Starting with its hybrids, Lexus has equipped its vehicles with VDIM, which coordinates control of the powertrain, antilock brakes, electric power steering, traction control and vehicle stability control systems.

It is designed to anticipate a loss of traction and help coordinate the separate active safety systems. The RC F has four modes: Normal for regular VDIM control; VDIM SPORT to give priority to driver control; EXPERT mode, which only intervenes to prevent a spin and OFF for no VDIM control.
