Man who shot Stafford police officer gets 14 years in prison A Fort Bend County jury returned a sentence of 14 years in Texas Department of Corrections in the Daniel Cruz case on Monday. Cruz was involved with the shooting of a Stafford Police Officer Ann Carrizales in October 2013. He is not alleged to be the person who actually shot Carrizales, but shot at her and her car during the altercation. The jury found Cruz guilty on Friday, Oct. 31. A Stafford super cop and former Marine corps boxer, who took two bullets, one in the face and the other in the chest, Carrizales still managed to chase her attackers for more than 20 miles. Carrizales, was just doing her job in the early morning hours of Oct. 26, 2013. Carrizales pulled over a car in Stafford, around 3 a.m. Her instincts told her something was amiss as she walked up to the car with three men inside. Within seconds, the front-seat passenger leaned over and started firing. She chased down three men in all, firing at them during a high-speed chase, as they fired back at her.

Sugar Land Skeeters get new owners By SESHDRI KUMAR The Sugar Land Skeeters baseball team has new owners. Robert “Bob” Zlotnik, who has been a minority, one-third owner since 2012, has acquired 100 percent ownership of the team.. The City of Sugar Land received a letter from Peter Kirk, Chairman of SL Baseball, LLC (SLB), on Sept. 24 regarding a change in control within SL Baseball, LLC. As part of this proposed change in control, 100% of the ownership of SLB will be transferred to Zlotnik. Based on a thorough evaluation of the information requested and provided, city staff believed that Mr. Zlotnik, with Mrs. Zlotnik and BZMZ Interests, LTD, has the appropriate financial capacity and relevant experience to own and manage SL Baseball, LLC. Additionally, the Zlotniks have confirmed Sugar Land Baseball, LLC will continue to own the Sugar Land Skeeters. Consequently, City Council on Oct. 28 unanimously approved the Lease Estoppel, Consent and Agreement between the City of Sugar Land and BZMZ Interests, Robert S. Zlotnik, Marcie C. Zlotnik, SL Baseball, LLC, and Opening Day Partners, LLC, in order to approve the change in control of SL Baseball, LLC and to ensure that ODP will remain responsible and liable for all obligations under the Lease. Meanwhile, according to the Sugar Land Skeeeters, Constellation Field exceeded attendance expectations in 2014 by 62 percent, an increase of 20,000 visitors over last year. The $36 million 7,500-seat stadium offers the community more than the opportunity to attend professional minor league baseball. The venue is a year-round community amenity that also offers concerts and community, corporate, private and special events. A feasibility study performed in 2009 projected average annual attendance for ball-

games and non-baseball events of 300,000 visitors. Using this benchmark study data, City planners forecast an annual benefit to the City of $7.7 million or a return of $169 million to the economy over 30 years. Baseball attendance continues to exceed projections and was once again the highest in the Atlantic League. Constellation Field also realized another significant increase in usage for special events in 2014 with more than 98,000 attendees for nonbaseball events that included festivals, charity events, sports tournaments, company events and corporate meetings. In 2014, attendance for baseball and non-baseball events was more than 62 percent higher than originally projected. Not only did the Sugar Land Skeeters win the Freedom Division for a second straight year and make it to the Atlantic League championship series for the first time, but their on-field success has attracted a new owner for the club. The Zlotniks’ association with the Skeeters and Constellation Field began when they secured the original naming rights as owners of StarTex Power. Their entrepreneurial expertise includes many years representing and working for sports and entertainment companies. “We are thrilled that the success of our team and stadium has resulted in local ownership,” said Sugar Land Mayor James Thompson. “We are looking forward to working more closely with the Zlotniks and believe their local presence and passion for baseball will be of great benefit to Sugar Land.” The stadium is the result of many years of effort by the City of Sugar Land; its citizens; and a public/private partnership between the City, Johnson Development and Opening Day Partners (ODP). The City worked with ODP in 2010 to bring professional minor league baseball to Sugar

Land. No general fund dollars were spent to create the stadium. Constellation Field was funded with a portion of sales tax revenues that may only be used for economic development purposes. These revenues were funded by the Sugar Land 4B Corporation and are not dependent on ballpark revenues to support the effort. Expenditures by visitors to the stadium generate sales and hotel occupancy taxes that benefit the City and Sugar Land residents. “Marcie and I are incredibly excited to continue our relationship with the Skeeters and to further partner with the entire Sugar Land community,” said Bob Zlotnik. “In just three short years, Constellation Field has become a well-recognized destination entertainment location, and we look forward to it continuing to set the standard for quality professional minor league baseball,” Zlotnik said. Sugar Land’s 4B corporation issued sales tax revenue bonds in 2011 for the stadium. To date the corporation has paid $6,381,301 in principal and interest on these bonds, according to city spokesman Doug Adolph. The estimated economic impact to the community is $7.7 million, including direct and indirect benefits. The direct spending is estimated at $5 million per year with an additional $2.7 million in indirect spending. Asked about the direct financial benefit for the city from the project, Adolph said, “In the last 12 months, the stadium has generated $188,855 in direct sales tax revenue to the City from merchandise and food & beverage sales at the stadium. We cannot determine the impact on hotels or other sales tax revenues that may be generated from attendees of events at the stadium.” The city had no comment on the profitability of the stadium operations, because the city does not operate the stadium.
