Republicans lead Democrats despite low turnout in county By SESHADRI KUMAR A sizeable straight party vote, significant margin between Republicans and Democrats and perceptible cross party votes marked the just concluded presidential election in Fort Bend County. Notable surprise was the low turnout in both parties compared to the 2008 presidential election, and the county appeared to be a little far away from becoming blue. Local races yielded no surprise either as both Republicans and Democrats retained their safe seats. In the Precinct 1 County Commissioner Race, incumbent Democrat Richard Morrison barely retained his seat. Morrison won the seat with a margin of 645 votes. This narrow margin is surprising because the Republican nominee Bruce Fleming was virtually thrown out of the ballot as his opponent alleged that Fleming voted both in Pennsylvania and in Texas in the past elections. Fleming’s campaign instantly floundered as Morrison and the Democrats targeted voters with a series of attack pieces. The Fort Bend GOP executive committee also withdrew its support for Fleming. Two Republican elected officials endorsed Morrison against Fleming. All this did not deter loyal Republicans from voting for Fleming. If the GOP had not “helped” Morrison, Fleming could have eked out a victory. During early voting Fleming got 48.98 percent of the votes and Morrison got 51.20 percent. On election day, Fleming got three votes more than Morrison, 6,483 to 6,480. The final tally was Morrison 23,640 to Fleming’s 22,955. In the sheriff’s race Troy Nehls won with 54.56 percent of the votes, defeating his Demo-

Nehls

cratic rival Mike Ellison who got 45.44 percent of the votes. The two contested district judge races and the county attorney races went in favor of Republicans, roughly 55 percent to 45 percent. Brenda Mullinix is the new district judge. Judge Jim Shoemake and County Attorney Roy Cordes retained their seats. Republican Rick Miller easily won the State Rep. Dist.26 race just as Democrat Ron Reynolds did in Dist. 27. In the newly created Dist. 85, Republican Phil Stephenson from Wharton won the seat, defeating former State Rep. Democrat Dora Olivo. Miller got 63 percent of the votes and his opponent Democrat Vy Nguyen got 37 percent. Reynolds received 69 percent and Kris Allfrey, Republican, got 29.5 percent in this heavily Democrat-leaning district. Olivo posted 48 percent to Stephenson’s 52 percent. In U.S. Dist. 22 Congressional race, incumbent Republican Pete Olson won with 64 percent of the votes, defeating Kesha Rogers, who got 32 percent. In early voting, 55 percent of Republicans voted straight party and 45 percent of Democrats voted straight. On election day, 49 percent of Republicans vot-

ed straight party, while Democrats totaled 50 percent. Thus the total straight party votes of Republicans 53.19 percent to Democrats’ 46.07 percent. This 7 percent margin of difference was reflected in the presidential race as well with Mitt Romney receiving 116,028 votes (52.91 percent) and Barack Obama 101,043 votes (46.08 percent.) In 2008, John McCain received 50.9 percent and Obama 48.5 percent. Romney received 12,822 votes more than McCain. Obama received 2,675 more votes than in 2008, though the number of registered voters increased by 41,120. This year, out of 341,523 registered voters, 222,416, cast ballots, a 65.12 percent turnout. In 2008, the turnout was 68.55 percent. Out of 300,403 registered voters 205,931 voted. In Harris County, Obama got 585 votes more than Romney. Obama got 585,451 votes 49.37% and Romney 584,866 votes (49.32 votes). Statewide, Romney received 57 percent of the votes to Obama’s 41 percent. The statewide turnout was 58.36 percent out of 13.65 million registered voters.

Texas Instruments Incorporated will construct an approximate 160,000-squarefoot office facility in Telfair to be completed by early 2014. The facility will be constructed on a seven-acre site and bring more than 375 jobs to Sugar Land. The company elected to locate its research and development facility in Sug-

ar Land after a regional search based on proximity to employees’ homes, local amenities and clarity of site-development plans. The new Texas Instruments facility will house employees that work in a variety of areas within the company’s embedded processing organization. See TI, Page 3
