Toys for Tots, Exchange Clubs, Rotary join forces to help kids

Toys for Tots, The Exchange Club of Sugar Land, Sugar Land Rotary and The Exchange Club of Fort Bend have partnered in a joint community service project to provide toys for over 5,000 Fort Bend County children this Christmas. Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is the fund raising and support organization for the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program. The Foundation was created at the behest of the U. S. Marine Corps and has supported Toys for Tots since 1947. The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, Carolyn Tarver, shown with Mike Kessler, has worked with The unwrapped toys during October, Exchange Clubs and Rotary since 1995 to help needy kids. year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. Santa’s Exchange has been providing toys for less fortunate families since 1995. It began with Carolyn Tarver who started Project S.M.I.L.E. (Stan’s Memory Includes Loving Everyone) after her teenage son Stan was killed in an accident. Exchange and Rotary have been working together with Ms. Tarver since 1995. Last year they partnered with Toys for Tots in order to serve more children. This year more than 5,000 needy children will receive Christmas gifts through the efforts of Community Service Clubs, businesses, churches and FBISD schools that collect gifts for the children and provide more than 1,000 volunteers the day of the event. Parents in need register at the Toys for Tots website and then are informed to visit Toys for Tots/Santa’s Exchange December 20th event and “shop” for three new toys for each child. The kids have a chance to visit Santa and “elves” entertain them with crafts and games. Traditionally over 1,000 volunteers from local community service clubs, high schools and churches assist on the day of the project. Toy donation boxes are located in all FBISD schools. Recruiting is under way for toy drop-off locations and volunteers for the 11th annual local campaign for Toys for Tots Fort Bend and Santa’s Exchange. “All toys collected stay in Fort Bend County to help those who might otherwise go without,” said Jack Molho, coordinator for Toys for Tots Fort Bend. “Cash donations are always appreciated and 97 percent of the donation goes directly to providing toys, books and other gifts. The remaining three percent covers fundraising expenses and not one donated dollar goes to salaries or manpower costs.” Donation sites will be available through the county including at First Colony Mall. Check the website for a list of locations. To be a drop-off site, donate or volunteer, visit http://staffordtx.toysfortots.org or email toysfortotsfortbend@gmail.com.

Birds of Fort Bend

Give thanks for the friends you’ll be seeing this Thanksgiving! It’s hard to decide which bird to select in the fall because the great fly-overs are bringing the Wood Ducks, White Pelicans, Cranes (Whooping and Sandhill), Snow Geese and other large migratory birds that travel the same routes using large rivers and tributaries much like interstate highways and farm-to-market roads. Smaller migratory birds take opportunities of obliging winds and this past week 2 dependable November friends as well as a year round returned to our garden. The Blue Gray Gnatcatcher looks like a small mockingbird of gray and charcoal with a long tail that shows up at Suet Feeders as well as in foliage and Oak, Maple and Ash trees. They love insects and withwarmer weather this week will likely be seen gleaning foliage. My particular visitors love a Japanese Maple and insect glean in some azaleas in a very protected area where I also have spider webs. They are fast and stay in motion so, unless like our photo shows with the recent catch, they are moving and/ or flying very quickly. A closely allied bird, the Ruby Crowned Kinglet, showed up the same day - a pair as a matter-of-fact one actually flashing its red pinfeathers on its tiny olive green head. But I was really rewarded in the garden when our cinnamon colored Carolina Wren told one of many stories - not singing, almost clucking showed up on the fence coming out of some thick evergreens. FBISD seeks community feedback on updated feeder pattern/boundary proposal Fort Bend ISD will host two Community Dialogue Meetings to share additional feeder pattern scenarios and attendance boundaries that were developed largely due to community feedback. The first meeting will take place on Monday, December 1, at Austin High School (3434 Pheasant Creek Drive, Sugar Land, 77498). A second meeting will be held on Wednesday, December 3, at Elkins High School (7007 Knights Court, Missouri City, 77459). Both meetings will take place from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. At the October 20 Board meeting, the District shared its proposal for District-wide feeder patterns, which was then presented to the community at two Community Dialogue meetings on October 21 and October 22. In the weeks that followed, FBISD received more than 6,000 completed surveys from members of the community, prompting the District to consider alternative feeder pattern and boundary options. The alternative options, which the District is now collectively referring to as “Scenario B,” were presented to the Board of Trustees at their November 17 Regular Board Meeting. As the District moves for-

ward, it will seek additional community feedback on “Scenario B” and also rely on District policy and an updated demographic study before it presents its final recommendation in January. “Both scenarios were developed with District policy in mind,” said FBISD Superintendent Dr. Charles Dupre. “While we want the feeder pattern structure to stand the test of time, we also want to make these decisions in a collaborative way. We feel both feeder pattern scenarios provide longterm solutions, as long the District maintains its boundaries on a consistent basis.” The complete “Scenario B” feeder pattern and boundary proposal is available to view on the District’s “Planning for Our Future” webpage. In addition, video of the presentation made to the FBISD Board of Trustees on November 17 is available to view there. Following the December Community Dialogue Meetings, the District will seek community feedback through an online survey that will remain open for several weeks. The District will review and consider all feedback to prepare the final recommendation to be presented to the Board in January 2015.

Happy Thanksgiving!
