First “Show Me City Ride of Pride” set for Dec. 1

Missouri City Mayor Allen Owen, left, with Councilman Don Smith. Missouri City, in partnership with State Senator Rodney Ellis, is set to host its First Annual “Show Me City Ride of Pride” on Sunday, Dec. 1 from 7 a.m. to noon. Participants will launch their 8.55-mile cycle from Community Park (Pavilion 4), 1700 Glenn Lakes Lane. The ride will wind through several scenic subdivisions, giving riders an opportunity to view the area’s natural beauty and enjoy a fun fitness exercise, and end at the Park. Stretching from Cartwright Road in the north and reaching Lake Olympia Parkway in the south, the bike ride will

feature 75 cyclists, and has already garnered attention with area businesses. Popular local business Sugar Cycles is an event sponsor and helped Missouri City staff plan the route, and companies such as Fiesta, CenterPoint Energy, Niagara Bottling, LLC and Leonetti Graphics are also supporting the inaugural ride. “We pride ourselves on creating and hosting innovative programs for citizens and are excited about this new City event and encourage everyone to get involved as a rider, volunteer or cheerleader,” said Parks & Recreation Director Larry Foos.

State Sen. Rodney Ellis “Missouri City is known nationwide as one of America’s best places to live, work and play and we are looking forward to showcasing the strength of our community and corporate partnerships on December 1,” he said. The “Ride of Pride” is open to area residents who are 16 and older and the entry fee is a toy donation that will be used as part of the City’s annual toy drive in support of Toys for Tots. To ensure public safety regulations are met during the ride, the event will only include 75 bicyclists. All participants will receive a free Tshirt, gift bag and refreshments

from “Ride of Pride” sponsors. “This bike ride is a way to highlight the community in a way we’ve never done before,” explained District B Council Member Don Smith, who spearheaded the event. Emphasizing the importance of area partnerships to community projects, State Senator Rodney Ellis, whose District 13 includes portions of Missouri City, said: “This ride is a great example of community leaders joining together to create an exciting, new event for Missouri City. I hope everyone will come out, spend a little time on a bike, and meet some of their neighbors.”

Congressman Pete Olson was humbled on Friday to honor local hero, Stafford Police Officer Ann Carrizales. Officer Carrizales was shot twice during a routine police stop on Oct. 26th, but somehow managed to chase the suspects down until backup arrived. Olson thanked the mother and former Marine for her courage and dedication to protecting our community. He also recently delivered a speech on the House floor paying tribute to her heroism.

Fort Bend County Appraisal Review Board needs members

Members of the Appraisal Review Board (ARB) say public service, not a paycheck, motivates them to listen day after day to citizen protests regarding values, exemptions and other matters. Fort Bend County Administrative District Judge James Shoemake is seeking applicants to fill large number of upcoming vacancies on the appraisal review board now as the appointments must be made by January 1. Training of new members will begin in early 2014 with protests beginning in May. The Appraisal Review Board is intended to be an informal jurylike tribunal that hears taxpayer challenges to the value, exemptions and other matters that the professional appraisers of the Fort Bend Central Appraisal District (FBCAD) assign to properties. The ARB members typically break into five to nine panels of three members each to hear protests. There are between 15,000 and 28,000 cases to be heard from early May through July. Judge Shoemake is concerned with having ARB members representative of all areas and ethnicities of the county. If some spots go unfilled, it can lead to delays in finalizing the appraisal rolls for local governments. The Property Tax Code requires that the appraisal records are certified by July 20, or as soon thereafter as practical. PTC § 41.12 (b) “The appraisal review board must complete substantially all timely filed protests before approving the appraisal records and may not approve the records if the sum of the appraised values, as determined by the chief appraiser, of all properties on which a protest has been filed but not determined is more than five percent of the total appraised value of all other taxable properties.” Applications are available online at: http://www.fbcad.org/.
