Sugar Land baseball team gets a name today The Fort Bend Aggie Moms’ Club 2010-2011 college scholarship applications are now available for Fort Bend County students currently attending Texas A&M University College Station, Galveston and Blinn TEAM. Completed applications including transcripts with Fall 2010 grades must be received by Feb. 14, 2011. Scholarship amounts ranging from $500 to $1500 will be awarded in May 2011. Christmas Tree Lighting on Dec. 2 The time is fast approaching for Sugar Land’s highly anticipated 8th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting on Thursday, Dec. 2, from 5-8 p.m. The entire community is invited to join Mayor James Thompson, Santa Claus and a variety of favorite holiday characters to light the 40-foot Christmas tree. Activities for the entire family are planned throughout the evening to entertain the estimated 10,000 attendees. Children’s activity booths will include: ● ornament decorations host-
ed by Hilton Garden Inn; ● a bean bag toss by Luggage and Leather; and ● “Learn How to Shave Santa’s Beard” (with Popsicle sticks, red balloons and shaving foam) by Christopher’s Vintage Shave. Be sure not to miss this year’s giant walkin snow globe where visitors will be able to take pictures in a “winter wonderland.” Cox Radio’s 107.5 “The Eagle” will also have a booth with exciting give-a-ways and activities for the whole family. Street entertainers such as juggling elves and marionette puppet shows will capture the crowd’s attention by creating holiday magic as they roam the streets of Town Square. Festive music will be performed by a variety of groups on the main stage, including Leah White and The Magic Mirrors, Sugar Land Super Star winner Chase Nease and choirs from Commonwealth Elementary School, Settlers Way Elementary School, Kempner High School and Stephen F. Austin High School. Delightful treats such as strawberry white chocolate bread pudding and hazelnut flavored French crepes will be available at food booths hosted by area restaurants such Vineyard on the Square and Genesis Catering. A free shuttle service will run from Mercer Stadium, 16403 Lexington Blvd., to Sugar Land Town Square.
Opening Day Partners, operators of Sugar Land’s new minor league baseball franchise will unveil the name and logo of the team on Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 10 a.m. at the Lakeview Elementary School Auditorium, 314 Lakeview Drive, Sugar Land. Sugar Land Mayor James Thompson, Matt O’Brien and Christopher Hill of Opening Day Partners/SL Baseball,

Sugar Land recently began the process to select a final design-build contractor for the construction of a minor league baseball stadium northeast of Highway 6 and U.S. Highway 90. A final decision is expected
in late January. Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2011 to have the stadium ready for opening day in April 2012. The $30 million stadium will be funded with a portion of sales tax revenues that may only be used for economic development purposes. No general fund tax dollars will be spent on the stadium. Both actors and technicians won top honors and many qualified to move on and compete at the International Thespian Festival in June. Earning a rating of Excellent were Brenda Lau and Brenna Ludwig (Duet Acting) and Kaleigh Treiber, Andrea Mendoza, Allie Mock and Molly Pedowicz (Group Acting). National qualifying performers include Kristin Donaldson (Monologue), Amanda Perez (Solo Mime), Vy Nguyen and Shannen Soffar (Duet Mime), Shane Dorman (Solo Musical), Nathan De Jesus and Elizabeth Jackson (Duet Musical) and James Watts, Ginny Moon, Kate McCroskey and Clair Daily (Group Musical). Kendrick James earned a rating of Excellent in the Sound Design category. Technicians who will move on to Nationals are Chelsie Scheffer (Stage Management), James Watts (Costume Construction) and Kristin Donaldson (Costume Design). Also earning top honors in the Texas Techie Contest were the costume design team of Crystal Cheung, James Watts, Molly Pedowicz and Kate McCroskey who placed in the top ten. Shane Dorman, Kaleigh Treiber, Allie Mock and Ty Hughes comprised the 2nd place set design team. Kempner also won All-Star Troupe honors for the scrapbook and display created by Shannen Soffar and Vy Nguyen.
