Houston hosts International Day of Yoga
About 500 Houstonians gathered at Midtown Park to celebrate the 4th International Day of Yoga (IDY) on June 21. The abundance of international communities among the participants elevated the Indian-origin yoga to an international discipline. The United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga, an initiative of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The first IDY was celebrated in 2015. See Page 9.
Suresh Iyer is Ekal USA’s new President
By MANU SHAH Suresh Iyer’s introduction to Ekal was a strange coincidence. In 2002, he was asked by a friend to host its Founder Shyam Gupta in a last minute change of plans. The conversation between the two turned to Ekal, lasted well into the night and by morning, Suresh had become a donor. He gradually became more involved as a volunteer, then Chapter President, Chairman of the Board until 6 months ago when he assumed the role of President of Ekal Vidyalaya USA. NEWS Committed and confident, ‘women mean business’ despite stormy weather By MANU SHAH Apparently, it takes more than thunder, lightning, and heavy showers to deter women. The IACCGH’s Women Mean Business saw over 60 incredible women beating the heavy showers to hear Keynote Speakers - Vinita Gupta offer her perspective on running a multimillion dollar business and Sangeeta Pasrija who found her calling in volunteering for social and cultural causes. The event, held on June 20th, was sponsored by Shell and supported by TiE – an organization that fosters entrepreneurship and creates economic growth. TiE President Arun Pasrija acknowledged the number of women entrepreneurs are “not quite what they should be” and expressed TiE’s support in empowering women owned businesses. TiE’s Ana Bastidas touched on the newly initiated TiE Young En-
trepreneur Program and stated that Houston is one of the first Chapters to be talking to high school students about entrepreneurship. IACCGH President Swapan Dhairyawan welcomed the gathering and highlighted the Chamber’s demographics which reflect its diversity and inclusiveness. He also shed light on the Chamber’s work in helping Harvey affected businesses bounce back on their feet. Coordinator and Program Chair of the series, Past President Joya Shukla spoke of the value in having dynamic women from different fields come out with their inspiring journeys and hoped the gathering could apply their “pearls of wisdom” when facing some of the same roadblocks. Volunteering, for Sangeeta Pasrija, was a “continuous journey of self-discovery.” She is a volunteer in several non-

HAF cosponsors Townhall on ‘Creating spaces for LGBTQIA Hindus’
WASHINGTON, DC (June 21, 2018) In honor of LGBT Pride Month, the Sri Siva Vishnu Temple, in Lanham, Maryland, hosted a town hall discussion on June 16 about what the temple could do to make queer Hindus feel more included. The event, “Creating Spaces for LGBTQIA Hindus,” was co-sponsored by the SSVT Center for Dharma Education, HAF, and Indiaspora. Moderated by Sivagami (Shiva) Subbaraman, the director of the LGBTQ Resource Center at Georgetown University, the panelists talked about their experiences coming out and the struggles they had to overcome reconciling their sexual identities with their religious identity. SSVT co-founder Dr. Siva Subramanian and BOT member Vasu Murthy opened the discussion by noting that Hinduism’s scriptures do not vilify LGBT identities, but noted that the scriptural openness is not always reflected in the attitude of many Hindus. They noted the SSVT’s statement on creating an inclusive space for LGBTQIA Hindus, which read: “Hinduism is an all inclusive and open way of life that teaches that all beings are equal. To honor those scriptural ideals, SSVT’s Constitution forbids
discrimination against any one on the basis of race, gender, religion etc. The recently formed Center for Dharma Education — whose task has been to engage younger generations of American-born Hindus — has done several events based on the relevant issues in the society such as non-violence, socially conscious parenting etc. Based on the CDE’s initiative, the SSVT is undertaking a dialog about how those who identify as both LGBTQIA and Hindu have reconciled those identities, and how the temple can help make them feel included and integrated into the larger Hindu community. SSVT is undertaking this discussion to bring the community together for an open dialog, and find a way to make sure all of our community’s voices are heard and respected.” Subbaraman and panelists Swarna Chowdhuri, Mytili Jagannathan, and Harsh Voruganti said they appreciated the temple’s willingness to host the discussion. Members of the audience, including some who identify as queer, added that they felt more welcomed as a result of the event. The event was standing room only, with some traveling from as far away as Pennsylvania just to attend. CDE chair Rohit Setty and former HAF education director
(and current consultant) Murali Balaji noted that the townhall was just the first step in creating a long-term space for queer Hindus. The SSVT Board also said they would work to do more to provide support for community members and their families. “We need to do more to uphold our scriptural ideas,” Balaji said. “Hopefully our queer family members will feel that the SSVT is a welcoming and loving space as we build on this.” The SSVT is working on engaging more Hindus, and others, on important topics through the CDE’s townhall series. Townhalls on domestic violence and mental health, respectively, will take place in the fall. HAF co-sponsored the event as a continuation of its advocacy on behalf of LGBTQIA issues. “HAF is a non-partisan advocacy organization for the Hindu American community. The Hindu American Foundation is not affiliated with any religious or political organizations or entities. “HAF seeks to serve Hindu Americans across all sampradayas (Hindu religious traditions) regardless of race, color, national origin, citizenship, caste, gender, sexual orientation, age and/or disability.”
Separating children from parents at the border is unconscionable, says HAF WASHINGTON, DC, June 19, 2018 — The recent actions by the Trump Administration separating children from parents at the border, placing them in detention facilities, often strikingly inadequately prepared for their needs, are unconscionable. As immigrants or children of immigrants, as parents, as Hindus, we can find no legal, moral, or ethical justification for such actions. HAF Executive Director Suhag Shukla, Esq. offered the following insight: “Hindus place great importance on the family. Whether attempting to enter the United States to seek asylum, fleeing violence in their home country, or seeking better economic opportunities, separating children from their parents is abhorrent. Treating young, vulnerable children in such a degraded way is beyond not only Hindu values, but American values.” “When the family is ruined, the timeless laws of family duty perish; and when duty is lost, chaos ensues.” — Bhagavad Gita The Hindu American Foundation unequivocally calls for the immediate end of the practice of separating children from their parents at the border and the treating of asylum seekers as criminals. It further urges that diligent efforts be undertaken to reunite all families affected by these cruel and inhumane policies.

NEWS/VIEWS USISPF hosts Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis
Fracas over Facebook posting
Devendra Fadnavis, left, with Ambassador Navtej Sarna Washington, D.C., JUNE 14, 2018: The US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) hosted the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, during his trip to the United States. The Forum kicked off the Chief Minister’s roadshow with U.S. investors at a roundtable in New York City, and hosted him the next day at an event with member companies in Washington, D.C. The state of Maharashtra, with its progressive measures to facilitate investments and investors, has worked towards the goals it had announced during the “Make in India” initiative in 2014. To continue to be the preferred business destination for foreign investors, the Chief Minister has supported private-public partnerships to promote growth through foreign investments across all sectors. The Chief Minister asked USISPF and Friends of Maharashtra in the U.S. to serve as one nodal point for all U.S. investments into Maharashtra. Both organization will coordinate and liaise with the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC). Maharashtra is the manufacturing hub and financial capital of India, and the state includes the cities of Pune and Mumbai. The Chief Minister spoke about his goals to make Maharashtra the first trillion-dollar economy across India, which he will do by leveraging foreign investments in various sectors. In his opening remarks, at the Washington, D.C. roundtable, the Chief Minister said, “We have focused on building infrastructure, which has subsequently opened up lot of opportunities for international investors in the state.” With an emphasis on further development of Mumbai and other townships, the Chief Minister has supported private-public partnerships to promote this growth. He insisted that his state’s objective of job growth, along with economic development, will be fulfilled through investments across sectors. Dr Mukesh Aghi, President and CEO of USISPF, congratulated the Chief Minister and said, “Maharashtra is growing at a rapid pace and the state is the first choice for many of our U.S companies that manufacture in India. It’s been an honor to host the Chief Minister and hear his strategy to build growth in Maharashtra through infrastructure development, services sector growth, and FDI attraction. With this plan, we have no doubt that the state will succeed.” The Chief Minister believes that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s growth vision for the country can be achieved through foreign collaborations, which will satisfy his major goals of economic cooperation and job growth. USISPF Member companies in attendance included financial services companies, as well as businesses with manufacturing interests in Maharashtra. The U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum is committed to creating the most powerful strategic partnership between the U.S. and India. Promoting bilateral trade is an important part of our work, but our mission reaches far beyond this. It is about business and government coming together in new ways to create meaningful opportunities that have the power to change the lives of citizens. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., USISPF has offices in New York, Silicon Valley, Mumbai, and New Delhi.
To the Editor: This is in response to the news in India Herald dated June 20, 2018 about “Woman in Hyderabad, files police complaint against Houston man.......” I read both the versions; the Woman and the person in question. I being a senior citizen (in eighties) from Hyderabad, couldn’t keep silent after reading the entire episode. I feel the whole episode is the outcome of too much freedom the present generation is enjoying over the Internet’s like Facebook, whatsapp etc. At the first instance the woman Dr. Deepa Nair being professor in prestigious Administrative Staff College, HYD and being in Govt. Service shouldn’t have aired her views on politics so freely. Every educated and civilized person in India knows that the Indian politics is dirty. Unlike Democracies in Britain, & in USA, Indian Democracy is different with multiple parties on the basis of caste, religion etc. It is a misnomer to call Indian govt. a democracy. In Aristotle, definition it is mobocracy. In such a situation, commenting on the outcome of elections, on the government formation in Karnataka, by an eminent professor is unwanted. Secondly, what ever be the comments of the woman, the reaction of Mr. Vijay is not proportionate to her comment. He should not have reacted in such a violent manner using unparliamentary words on social media. Further, he tried to justify his actions by taking recourse to the freedom he has in America for using such words. I totally disagree with him. I am also Citizen of USA. I know many Americans. They are nice people. They do not raise their voice nor react violently. Irrespective of the country or creed every man should learn to respect women as a mother, a sister and a friend. Mr. Vijay, you seem to be young and energetic, use your energies in a positive and constructive ways. Please end this episode here, using all your wisdom. Manoher Reddy Mamidi. The Woodlands

Why yoga without meditation is meaningless?
Yoga is more than just Physical postures. Deviant versions of yoga bereft of spirituality and meditation can be dangerous and not beneficial at all. INDRANILL BASU RAY, MD The practice of yoga has swept the world with an enthusiasm never seen before. Yoga has achieved the status of a mass cultural phenomena, as shown by the fact that there are around 300 million yoga practitioners in the world and it is an 80-billion-dollar market. As the fourth fastest growing industry in the USA, it generates 30 billion dollars annually (16 billion from yoga facilities and 10 billion from yoga mats and other yoga props). To start with, these numbers are indicative of a sudden surge in the business of this old philosophical tradition of India. None of the other Ancient Arts of world civilizations has survived, been sustained and soared to the heights that yoga has. The credit for this goes to its applicability to every age that the human species has survived. Yoga is one of the rarest of the rare sciences, to have survived through scientific rev-
olutions, technological innovations, and modernizations! The fact that yoga is recognized and revered in a world progressing towards evidencebased, result oriented and relational practices only makes it a science par excellence. Sage Patanjali is considered to be the father of the yogic system. Patanjali organized the teachings into 196 short aphorisms or sutras known as the “Yoga Sutra” in the second century. This text describes the path of Raja Yoga, often called “classical yoga”. Yoga arrived in the west in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when yoga masters began to travel to the West for the first time, introducing the yogic wisdom and its relation to spiritual attainments. A special mention goes to the 1893 Parliament of Religions in Chicago, when Indian Philosopher Swami Vivekananda amazed the attendees with his lectures on yoga and

the universality of the world’s religions, thereby introducing and popularizing the heritage of yogic wisdom to the common people of the West. The prodigious popularity and the overwhelming universal adoption of this Indian discipline demands a special celebratory day to mark the significance of its health benefits (on both mental and physical levels) for common humanity and hence, World Yoga Day has been celebrated annually on 21 June, since its inception in 2015. An international day for yoga was announced by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 11 December 2014. The prime minister of India, Narendra Modi suggested the date because it is the longest day of the Northern Hemisphere. It is the day of summer solstice, which marks the journey of the sun towards the south, a period of six months which is most favourable for spiritual practices, according to certain scriptures. One hundred seventy-five nations, including the USA, Canada, and China co-sponsored the resolution of World Yoga Day. It had the highest number of co-sponsors ever for any UNGA Resolution of this nature. Yoga has in recent connotations been associated with incredible health benefits (like weight loss, blood pressure control, cholesterol lowering, cardiac health, diabetes management, metabolism regulation, promotion of flexibility and endurance, muscle strengthening, sight and height improvements, etc.) and that has contributed to the sudden love for the routines and physical postural regiments in every part of the world. Undoubtedly, yoga does serve the purpose of keeping the body in shape and balanced, but there is much more to it than just the physical aspect. It is important to live beyond the mat! Posture simulated yoga is just a fraction of the 5000-yearold philosophical wisdom which is buried under the huge
popularity of the yoga-sticks of the modern world. The yoga known to the world today is what has been reinvented from the past 150 years by various yogis and markets, keeping in mind the demands of the time. It is imperative to know the other aspects of yoga in order to understand how it results in physical fitness. In contemporary times, the business of yoga is progressing towards style, convenience, and amusement, rather than the classical purpose of spiritual enlightenment with the help of physical balance and control. Today, there are some very strange forms and derivations of Yoga practiced in various fanciful studios, such as the Co-Ed Completely Nude Vinyasa Yoga (practice yoga in nude), Hot Yoga (studios are heated to 105 degrees Fahrenheit and 40% humidity), Dogs (doing yoga while holding your dog in various positions), Yoga (yoga with “vogueing,” or dancing/enjoying popular music), Snowga (yoga in the snow), and Laughter Yoga, to name a few. These techniques are inventions for making yoga fit your preferences of workout style, but they lack the very attitude and spirit of the science which was predominantly devised for spiritual empowerment in its inception. Spirituality is one of the most fundamental aspects of yoga and this aspect has been overshadowed by the progression of the physical aspect of yoga. Volumes of texts on yoga sutras provide an insight into millions of questions about human sense and sensibilities, human sufferings and human connectedness to the world. From wisdom about coping with the stresses of everyday life to attaining emancipation from worldly desires and attaining the highest form of spiritual self by following various paths recommended by yoga, this humongous science has so much to offer. Yoga philosophy incorporates the senses, the intellect, the ego and the body into one whole reality.
It suggests that our misery and our happiness are our own productions. No situation is either good or bad, but our reaction makes it so. Everything is in the senses. It is the touch of the senses that creates pleasure or pain. If we can control the senses and order what we shall feel, without letting them control and have command over us, if they become our servants, then the problem is solved. Our senses make us experience the world and mastery over them is the key to successful living, which can happen with mindfulness attained by yoga. This leads you to gain the union with your own self. You are not the body, but the universal soul! You learn to control, rather than being controlled, and this is the magic of the science of yoga. Make your mind your means to salvation, by attaining freedom from being affected by the living conditions which are neutral in themselves. However the deviant forms of yogas’ enumerated above fail to provide any benefit known to be associated with the practice and may even be deleterious for the human body. Our contemporary times and troubles are overwhelming in a way that taking care of the body but neglecting the spirit does not work in favour of balanced living. When once asked, Swami Vivekananda said: “To every action, there is an equal reaction. If a man strikes me and wounds me, it is that man’s actions and my body’s reaction. Suppose I have so much power over the body that I can resist even that automatic action”. Can such power be attained? The ancient Indian philosophy says “yes you can”. “However If you stumble on [it], it is a miracle. If you learn it scientifically, it is Yoga.” (The author is a Cardiologist & Interventional Electrophysiologist of international repute, Research Faculty at Texas Research Institute, and adjunct professor of Cardiology at AIIMS, Rishikesh )

COMMUNITY Ekal
From Page 1 education and the spirit of service early in life. The family lacked monetary resources but made up in a mother’s determination to educate all six of her children. As they did well in school, she cleared out the balcony so they could coach other children who were not faring as well for free. Suresh recalls that despite a budget that stretched thin, there was always a snack for all the children after class. These instilled values showed up time and again over the course of his life. After graduating and securing his first paying job at the Indian Space Research Organization as a scientist, the first thing Suresh did was to fund the education of several children who were academically good but couldn’t afford the fees in his school in Bengaluru. After brief stints at Air India and Tata Consultancy Services, USA, Suresh started his own company Infospectrum in 2002 based out of Southern California. The company provides tracking software for aerospace maintenance as well as real time tracking of transportation Assets. Suresh is happy his entrepreneurial gamble paid off but clearly says his work with Ekal “brings a different level of satisfaction.” The Ekal movement started in 1989 with one village and one school. Today, there is an Ekal school in 70,000 villages in India offering free schooling,
vocational training, digital competence and agricultural education. Suresh makes it a point to visit a school every time he visits India. If they are excited and curious to meet this visitor from America, he is no less impressed to hear a 6 year old confidently rattle off the multiplication table of 12. To him, it is proof that Ekal is effective. It also made his day when a girl who had learned tailoring at an Ekal vocational school told him she had opened her own tailoring center and was earning 5000 rupees a month. As President, Suresh is charged about taking Ekal to the next level. The Foundation raised 8 million dollars last year and his goal is to cross 10 million this year. He’s also working on putting a system of Donor communication in place and intends to strengthen those Ekal Chapters that need a little boost. Above all, he wants “Ekal’s message to be out in the world loudly and clearly.” Three galas for fundraising are being planned for October in New York, Washington and Houston. He reveals that just $365 can support an Ekal school for an entire year. Suresh is clearly thriving on this challenge but admits he couldn’t have done it without his wife Kanaka’s unwavering support, A physician, she held the fort with their two boys while he took on various leadership roles at Ekal. This spirit of service has also passed on to Suresh’s two boys – Vasant and Sumant.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF YOGA 2018
Above, Three generations join the yoga fest. Right, Demonstration of difficult yoga postures by Austin Dunn, Reggie Ahmad, Lindsey Law and Nicklous Dutcher. BY SESHADRI KUMAR As yoga became the trending topic all over the world last week, about 500 Houstonians gathered at Midtown Park to celebrate the 4th International Day of Yoga (IDY) on June 21. The abundance of international communities among the participants elevated the Indianorigin yoga to an international discipline. The spectacle of young and old and different ethnicities performing the yogic exercises spelled success to the mission of the IDY, promoting Yoga and spreading the message about the rewards of its regular practice. The United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga, an initiative of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The first IDY was celebrated in 2015. The theme for the 2018 celebration, organized by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, was ‘Yoga for Peace.’ The Indian Consulate in Houston, as always, took the lead in organizing the IDY, with active participation by a number of yoga institutions, organizations committed to yoga, and leading yoga teachers. Former President of Hindus of Greater Houston and Event
Coordinator in Houston, Sharad Amin kicked off the program by inviting four yoga practitioners to the stage. Austin Dunn, Nicklous Dutcher, Lindsey Law, and Reggie Ahmad set the tone for the ensuing yoga session by demonstrating difficult postures in yoga. Amin, then introduced representatives of various volunteer organizations participating in the event. President of Patanjali Yogpeeth USA and yoga teacher, Shekhar Agrawal was the master of ceremonies. Other supporting organizations included Art of Living, Arya Samaj of Greater Houston, Brahma Kumaris, Ekal Vidyalaya, Pralay Yoga, Hindus of Greater Houston, Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh, Hindu Temple of The Woodlands, Aga Khan Council for South West USA, Bhagavatam Aani Mutyalu, Indian Muslims Association of Greater Houston, India House, Isha Foundation, Patanjali Yogpeeth, USA, Sewa International, SVYASA and the Gujarati Samaj of Houston. From Page 9 ter Narendra Modi was presented where he stated “Yoga is one of the most precious gifts given by the ancient Indian sages to humankind. Free from illness, a path to wellness — that is the path of yoga....it teaches us to see others the same as ourselves, yoga makes us better individuals in thought, action, knowledge and devotion.” Students of Rathna Kumar’s Anjali Center for Performing Arts, presented a “Shambu” dance, a perfect fit for the occasion. The lyrics of “Shambu”, created by Sage Patanjali has exclusive characteristics. Patanjali, the original yoga guru, was believed to be a human face with the body of a snake and a snake used the same organ to hear and see. Patanjali’s Shambu describes Lord Shiva’s cosmic dance and how one could perceive (see and hear) the dance with one organ. (The alphabet used in the lyrics are like “San serif”, letters that do not have extending features at the end of strokes.) After the scintillating dance, Vishwarupa Nanjundappa, director of SVYASA and Olivia Keller of Black Swan Yoga School led the audience through some common yoga positions. This was followed by Roger Rippy’s relaxation techniques to the accompaniment of Soumil Manik’s soothing music. Robert Boustany of Pralay Yoga guided the pranayama (breathing) exercises. The successful conclusion of the Yoga Day was celebrated with colors, like the typical festival of colors or Holi in India. Earlier in the day, India House held a Yoga session marking the International Day of Yoga. The International Day of Yoga clearly showed the world that the practice is free and it brings people together from across the world. At the same time, yoga has become a commercial success with many organizations offering their own brand of yoga training for a fee. According to a 2016 Yoga Journal report, 36.7 million people practice yoga in the US, up from 20.4 million in 2012. The yoga market is now worth

Attorneys at Law Texas Location: 6200 Savoy Dr, Ste. #270 Houston, TX 77036 Tel: 713-278-1677 / Fax: 713-278-1656 Nikki Haley Nikki Haley is travelling to India for the first time as the US Ambassador to the UN on a two-day visit during which she will meet senior Indian officials, business leaders and students, underscoring America’s “strong alliance” with the country. Talks between Haley, the highest ranking Indian-American in the Donald Trump administration, and Indian officials could include a host of topics including India-US strategic ties and significant global developments. Haley will travel to New Delhi from June 26-28 during which she will meet with senior Indian government officials, NGO leaders, and the interfaith community “to underscore the United States’ shared values and strong alliance with the people of India,” a brief media advisory from the US Mission to the UN said here on Monday. While the media advisory did not give further details of the 46-year-old diplomat’s programme during her visit, she could call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is likely to meet senior officials from the Ministry of External Affairs. She will also deliver remarks to a group of business and government leaders, students, and civil society on advancing US-India relations. The visit to India by one of the Republican party’s rising stars comes just days before US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo and Secretary of Defense James Mattis will host External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Minister of Defense Nirmala Sitharaman in Washington for the inaugural US-India 2+2 Dialogue on July 6. This meeting will focus on strengthening strategic, security, and defence cooperation as the United States and India jointly confront global challenges, the State Department has said. Haley’s visit assumes significance as the Trump administration walks away from key multi-lateral pacts, re-writing American engagement with its key western allies. Haley’s visit comes just days after she announced, alongside Pompeo, that the US was withdrawing from the UN Human Rights Council. Under the Trump presidency, the US has pulled away from the Iran nuclear deal and the Paris Climate agreement, where India had played a leadership role in bringing the global pact to fruition. Following Washington’s withdrawal from the Iran deal and the re-imposition of sanctions, Swaraj had said at a press conference in New Delhi that India will comply with UN sanctions and not any country-specific sanctions. Last month, she had also met Iran’s visiting Foreign Minister Javad Zarif during which he sought India’s support in salvaging Iran’s nuclear deal with leading world powers in the wake of the US pull-out from it. Haley had visited India in late 2014 when she was the South Carolina Governor. NEWS India offers huge opportunity for US energy sector: Rick Perry India offers an “amazing opportunity” for US energy sector as it is a huge market for the American energy products, including clean coal technology, Energy Secretary Rick Perry has said. Perry, who visited India in April this year as part of the Trump administration’s move to enhance bilateral energy cooperation, said he had “very good conversations” with his Indian counterpart on clean coal and carbon capture utilisation. During the first meeting of the US-India Strategic Energy Partnership in April, the two countries decided to increase its cooperation in oil and gas, power, renewable energy and coal sectors. “India offers an amazing opportunity for US energy,” Perry told reporters during a media round table on Monday. In the last three years, he said, the export of US crude oil to India had increased from 300,000 barrels to eight million barrels and it is a huge market for the American energy products, including clean coal technology. Appreciative of India’s effort to partner with the US on nuclear power, Perry said the US needed to take steps to have the latest technology and efficient methods to produce nuclear power. “If we don’t keep our ability to be a player in a technological sense, whether it’s building reactors as Westinghouse Electric Co does or whether it’s the pipeline of young people moving into nuclear energy because they see a future there. If we were to lose our ability to be a player in the nuclear power business, it’s going to have a long-term impact,” he said. It sends a short-term message to Saudi Arabia, with which the US is currently in the
process of negotiating a 123 Agreement, he said. “It sends a short-term message to the Indian leadership that America is really not committed to nuclear power, so why should we go into a partnership with them and it appears that they’re not even going to support their industry in the United States,” Perry explained. So, this is a really important conversation to have, he noted. “If we’re going to go sit down with India, if we’re going to sit down with Saudi Arabia, we’re going to have conversations about nuclear power going forward, yet we let our industry collapse for whatever reason, then it puts the future of nuclear power in the US in jeopardy,” Perry said in response to a question. During the India visit, Perry had said that Westinghouse Electric Co is emerging out of bankruptcy and is capable of delivering the planned six nuclear reactors to India on time. Civil nuclear cooperation has been a cornerstone of USIndia relations. The 2016 deal, under which Westinghouse was to build six AP1000 reactors in Andhra Pradesh, was concluded after more than a decade of diplomatic efforts. But it was in limbo after Westinghouse in March last year filed for bankruptcy following an estimated USD 13 billion of cost overruns at two US projects. According to a Department of Energy Factsheet, the US is focused on promoting American LNG exports and increasing its energy dominance by supporting research and development in both the upstream and midstream sectors. To date, the energy department has approved cumulative exports of liquefied natural gas of 21.35 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) to any country in
the world not prohibited by US law or policy. Since January 2017, the Department of Energy has granted non-FTA export authority to two world-scale LNG projects— Golden Pass Products in Texas and Delfin LNG, which is proposed for offshore Louisiana. It has also granted authority to Eagle LNG’s small-scale Maxville, Florida, project and approved additional capacity at the proposed Lake Charles, Louisiana and LNG project. Cargos of US LNG have so far landed in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, South America, North America, the Caribbean—and also in Europe, in places that have traditionally depended on Russia for gas supplies, like Lithuania and Poland. Now, US LNG is helping to diversify their gas supplies and shore up their energy security. The countries that now receive US LNG are Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Egypt, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Lithuania, Malta, Mexico, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the UAE and the UK. Mumbai attack remarks: Pakistani court issues notice to Sharif
LAHORE A Pakistani court has issued a notice to ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif on a petition seeking action against him for claiming that those involved in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack belonged to Pakistan. In a petition filed in the Lahore High Court yesterday, advocate Azhar Siddique said Sharif, who was disqualified by the Supreme Court in the Panama Papers case in July last, in an interview to Dawn this May made the remarks that those involved in the Mumbai attack case actually belonged to Pakistan. The petitioner said the “anti-state” statement of Sharif - a threetime prime minister - could be used against Pakistan by its enemies. He said a meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) was held to discuss the ‘misleading’ statement of the disqualified premier and later the then prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi met Sharif and conveyed to him the concerns of the military leadership on his statement. “The act of Abbasi was also a clear violation of his oath as he was bound not to allow his personal interest to influence his official conduct,” he said. LHC Justice Syed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi also issued notices to Abbasi and Dawn journalist Cyril Almeida, who published the interview of Sharif, to file a reply by June 29. In the interview, Sharif had acknowledged that militant organisations are active in Pakistan and questioned the policy to allow the “non-state actors” to cross the border and “kill” people in Mumbai. He also said: “We have isolated ourselves. Despite giving sacrifices, our narrative is not being accepted. Afghanistan’s narrative is being accepted, but ours is not. We must look into it.” Pakistan’s National Security Committee - the top civil and military leadership - had condemned the “fallacious” statement by Sharif about the Mumbai attack and termed his remarks as “incorrect and misleading”. Ten Lashkar-e-Toiba militants killed 166 people and wounded dozens in Mumbai in November, 2008. Nine of the attackers were killed by police while lone survivor Ajmal Kasab was caught. Kasab was executed after a court found him guilty and handed down death sentence.

Burail Jail has perhaps become the first prison in the country to get into the burgeoning online food order business. So the next time you plan to host a big party at home, just go to the website chdmodeljail.gov. in, click on ‘food and other articles’ and you can have delectable samosas or syrupy gulab jamuns prepared by prisoners delivered at your doorstep by the jail staff. Prices have been kept reasonable too. If you want a sandwich, you can have it for Rs 19. Cost for it goes down to Rs 13 per piece if you order a minimum of 50. There is GST at 5%, of course. The menu has a lot to offer and officials at the jail in Sector 51 said more items will be added. There is a small catch though. Jail staff have specified minimum orders for home delivery. But that’s not too much of a deterrent, OP Mishra (IG, Prisons) said. “Business is good and it will pick up,” he said. Officials said all food items on sale are prepared by trained inmates under expert supervision. “We ensure that the kitchen’s hygiene is maintained and rates of the products are kept competitive,” jail staff added. They said that inmates learn different types of work and many have taken a shine to making food. “Those who make sweets in jail, for instance, can work at a sweet shop or can even open their own once out,” a jail official said. Mishra said that those who aren’t interested in ordering the food but want to eat stuff made by prisoners can just go to the jail canteen at Shopping-cum-Visitor Complex, Model Jail, Sector 51. What’s more, an exclusive outlet is coming up in Sector 22 soon.

NEWS Indian immigrants at US detention centre to get access to meet attorneys: Report
A US judge has ordered that 120 immigrants, including 52 Indians - mostly from Punjab, be given immediate access to legal aid by allowing attorneys to meet them at the federal prison in Oregon, according topublished reports. Nearly 100 Indians are detained for illegally entering the country through its southern border. According to officials, around 40-45 Indians are at a federal detention centre in the Southern American State of New Mexico while 52 Indians, mostly Sikhs and Christians, are held in Oregon. The Oregon federal judge has granted the detained immigrants being held in a Sheridan prison immediate access to legal aid, The Portland Mercury reported. US District Judge Michael
Simon yesterday granted an emergency order sought by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Innovation Law Lab, a nonprofit whose attorneys have been denied access to immigrants being held at the prison in Sheridan. “We are a nation under law,” said Simon. “The rule of law is one of our most cherished principles. And because we are a nation that lives under law, the right to legal counsel is a right that has been recognised as required,” the judge said. Simon approved an emergency temporary restraining order filed on Friday against the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) for violating the detain-
ees’ constitutional rights to due process, the report said. The ACLU of Oregon filed a lawsuit on Friday arguing the federal government is violating the constitutional rights of immigration detainees at the federal prison. According to immigration attorney Akansha Kalra, the largest number of Indians who enter the US illegally are from Punjab and Gujarat. US President Donald Trump last week reversed his controversial decision on immigration by signing an executive order to end the separation of immigrant families on the US-Mexico border, following widespread protests against the move of his administration to separate children from their parents who illegally enter the country.
Indian-origin woman in Singapore faces jail term in US Navy bribe case SINGAPORE A 57-year-old Indian-origin Singaporean woman, accused of being involved in the largest bribery case in the history of the US Navy, may face a jail term of more than three years, a media report said on Friday. Sharon Rachael Gursharan Kaur, who was a lead contract specialist for the US Navy, was allegedly involved in the USD 35-million ‘Fat Leonard’ scandal, which resulted in the arrest and conviction of several senior officers of the US Navy, including a rear admiral, The Straits Times reported. Kaur was based at the US Navy’s Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Centre in Singapore. The court heard on Thursday that she received more than SGD 130,000 in bribes from Leonard Glenn Francis, the Malaysian chief executive of Glenn Defence Marine Asia (GDMA)--a subsidiary of Singapore-based Glenn Marine Group--which provides goods and services for American ships in at least a dozen countries in Asia. Francis, also known to several US Navy personnel as “Fat
Leonard”, had allegedly paid Kaur bribes between 2006 and 2011 as a reward for giving him information about the US Navy that was not available to the public. She would disclose procurement-sensitive data and price information of his firm’s competitors. As a result, he was able to prepare more competitive bids to secure lucrative contracts with the US Navy. Deputy Public Prosecutor Jiang Ke-Yue told the court that the information she leaked was linked to 16 US Navy contracts. GDMA submitted bids for 14 of them and was awarded 11 contracts worth some USD 48 million in total. The prosecution made its submissions to the court and asked for Kaur to be handed over a jail term of at least three years and seven months, the paper said. Kaur had pleaded guilty to three corruption charges and one count of dealing with the benefits of her criminal activities on June 30 last year. She is now out on bail of SGD 50,000 and is expected to be sentenced on July 6. Defence counsel Suresh
Damodara told District Judge Shaiffudin Saruwan that Kaur was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and went through total hysterectomy in late 2016. Pleading for the imposition of minimal sentences, Damodara argued that incarceration could “exacerbate” Kaur’s medical condition and lead to a relapse, which would be life-threatening, the Singapore daily reported. Francis had pleaded guilty to his offences in the US in January 2015 and remain in custody there. He faces a maximum jail term of 25 years and has since agreed to forfeit USD 35 million in personal assets. DPP Jiang said more than 10 US Navy officials have since pleaded guilty in the US to their roles in the scandal. They include US Navy commander Bobby Pitts, who was in charge of the Fleet Industrial Supply Command in Singapore, and retired Rear Admiral Robert Gilbeau. Both men were sentenced to one-and-a-half years’ jail last year. —The Tribune
India among most dangerous countries for women, says poll India, Libya and Myanmar are the world’s most dangerous countries for women exploited by human traffickers and forced to wed, work and sell sex, a global experts’ poll found on Tuesday. Nigeria and Russia came joint fourth in the Thomson Reuters Foundation survey of about 550 experts in women’s issues on the worst countries for women when it comes to the trade in humans. From detention centres in Libya and curses cast by priests in Nigeria, to porous borders in Myanmar and visa abuses around the World Cup in Russia, women and girls are increasingly being targeted and trapped by traffickers using a variety of tactics. Women and girls account for seven in 10 victims of an industry estimated to affect 40 million people worldwide and generate illegal annual profits of $150 billion for traffickers, says the United Nations and rights group Walk Free Foundation. “They are uniquely vulnerable because of their subordinate status economically, socially and culturally,” said Christa Hayden Sharpe from the charity International Justice Mission. Women and girls in India face the biggest threat from traffickers because they are still widely considered to be sexual objects and second-class citizens, campaigners said. About two-thirds of the 15,000 trafficking cases registered by India in 2016 involved female victims--nearly half were under 18--with most sold into sex work or domestic servitude. “Trafficking is a global issue, but of all the victims I have seen, I have found those from southeast Asia, mainly India, the most vulnerable,” said Triveni Acharya of the Indian anti-trafficking charity Rescue Foundation. “Girls continue to be seen as a burden on parents, inferior to boys,” she added, explaining how many rural girls are lured by traffickers who promise jobs or marriages in major cities. In Libya, which is split between rival governments while ports are mainly controlled by armed groups who smuggle Africans onto boats heading for Europe, many migrants are detained and suffer forced labour, the United Nations and European Union say. “The situation of migrant women and girls travelling through Libya is really dire,” said Hanan Salah, a senior researcher focusing on Libya for Human Rights Watch. “I would say that the majority of them face the risk of ill treatment and abuse.” Women in Myanmar, in the spotlight after the exodus of 700,000 Rohingya to Bangladesh since insurgent attacks sparked a security crackdown last year, face a different threat from traffickers--being forced into marriages in China. China is by far the most common destination country for trafficking victims from Myanmar--accounting for two-thirds of the 307 cases investigated by the latter’s government in 2016. A lack of jobs in Myanmar means poor girls and women fall prey to traffickers--many of them female--who take them to China under false pretences as brides for men in a nation with a gender imbalance due to its one-child policy, campaigners say. Thousands of Nigerian women and girls are lured to Europe each year via Libya, made to perform black magic rituals known as ‘juju’ which bind them to their traffickers before they are forced into sex work in Italy, according to the United Nations. Yet the recent order by a traditional ruler in Edo state revoking the voodoo rituals and warning priests who perform them is changing the nature of trafficking in Nigeria, officials say. “The new dimension is they (the traffickers) are now telling the girls that they will get them jobs as nurses and house help in Dubai...(with) travel documents...making it look legal,” said Julie Okah-Donli, head of anti-trafficking agency NAPTIP. Russia is a major source and destination country for female victims, with local women being sex-trafficked to Europe and the Middle East, and arrivals coming from nations such as Thailand, China and Nigeria, said Russian anti-slavery group Alternativa. While Russia’s strict visa process has long made trafficking women into the nation a difficult endeavour, criminals have been plotting to exploit the World Cup which allows visitors to enter visa-free if they hold a ticket and football fan pass, it said. “This is a real present for traffickers,” said Julia Siluyanova of Alternativa. Rounding out the top 10 most dangerous countries for women at the hands of traffickers were the Philippines, Afghanistan, Thailand, Nepal, and Bangladesh and Pakistan in joint tenth. The poll of 548 people was conducted online, by phone and in person between March 26 and May 4 spread across Europe, Africa, the Americas, South East Asia, South Asia and the Pacific.
NEWS Netherlands parliament approves limited ban on burqa, niqab The Netherlands has approved a limited ban on “face-covering clothing” in public places, including Islamic veils and robes such as the burqa and niqab but not the hijab, which covers only the hair. Firebrand far-right politician Geert Wilders had pushed for the ban for over a decade. Parliament’s upper chamber made the final approval in a vote on Tuesday. Wilders’ Freedom Party claimed the development as a major victory, while Senator Marjolein Faber-Van de Klashorst called it “a historical day because this is the first step to de-Islamize the Netherlands”. “This is the first step and the next step is to close all the mosques in the Netherlands,” she said, building on Wilders’ antiIslam rhetoric. The Dutch law is described by the government as “religionneutral,” and does not go as far as more extensive bans in neighboring countries like France and Belgium. It applies on public transport and in education institutions, health institutions such as hospitals, and government buildings. Successive Dutch governments have sought to ban niqabs, which cover most of the face but still shows the eyes, and burqas, which cover the face and body even though studies suggest that only a few hundred women in the Netherlands wear the garments. The ban also covers ski masks and full-face helmets. The government said people still have full freedom on how to dress, except when it is necessary to have full facial contact for instance in education and health-related situations. The ban does not apply to public streets, although police can ask an individual to remove face-covering clothing for identification. “This is actually virtually a complete ban because the only spaces that are still available for women (who wear face-covering clothing) are the street and the private sector,” said Annelies Moors, professor of Anthropology and Sociology at the University of Amsterdam. “And, of course, the private sector can also have their house rules, they could also possibly legislate against their presence. So this leaves women very little space.” “It is completely disproportionate and the only effect will be that many of these women will stay at home even more,” said Green Party senator Ruard Ganzevoort. “They will not have an opportunity to go to school. They will not have an opportunity to go to learn to swim, and all those things.”
NGOs on Enforecement Directorate’s radar for funding Naxals Expanding its investigations from the Bihar-Jharkhand region to Chhattisgarh, the Enforcement Directorate has zeroed in on some non-government organisations (NGOs) that are suspected to have funded Naxal operatives in the State. The agency is preparing a list of such NGOs to examine their financial dealings, as they are already on the radar of security and police agencies. The action is being taken following several rounds of multi-agency meetings on devising a coordinated strategy to choke funding to Naxal operatives in various States. Top police officers of Odisha, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal, besides senior functionaries of the ED, National Investigation Agency and the Intelligence Bureau, had held a meeting with the Union Home Secretary last month. The ED has also identified some prominent industrial houses that paid ‘protection’ money to the banned outfit. It is learnt that their functionaries will soon be summoned for recording their statements. The Directorate had earlier given a presentation on its findings based on the action taken so far against several Naxal leaders operating in Bihar and Jharkhand. The agency has found that they extorted money and laundered the funds, acquiring movable and immovable assets. Properties worth crores have been attached under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act over the past few months. In one case, the ED attached the assets in connection with 67 FIRs and charge sheets filed against fugitive Naxal operative Pradyumn Sharma, who along with his associates allegedly extorted money from businessmen through certain private contractors. The accused had also acquired land and other properties in different parts of Bihar.

Now, apply for passport from anywhere in India
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday launched a new scheme under which a person can apply for a passport from anywhere in India irrespective of the place of stay. The minister also launched a mobile application, available in Android and iOS platforms, that would have the facilities for applying, paying and scheduling appointments for acquiring a passport. Under the new scheme, launched on the occasion of the Sixth Passport Seva Divas, a person can now choose the Regional Passport Office (RPO) and the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) for submitting the application. The application can be submitted irrespective of whether the person’s present residential address was within the jurisdiction of the selected RPO or not, a Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) statement said.
The police verification, if required for a specific passport, would be conducted at the address specified in the application form, it said. The passport will be printed and despatched by the RPO selected for application submission by the applicant to the address specified in the application, the statement said. For example, a resident of Jaipur, who is temporarily residing in Kolkata, will now be able to apply at a PSK or POPSK under the RPO, Kolkata, and will not have to travel all the way back to Jaipur to submit an application for a passport at a PSK or POPSK under the Jaipur RPO. This citizen-centric initiative of the ministry is expected to benefit the applicants who are unable to apply at a PSK or POPSK near their ordinary place of residence, the statement said. With the launch of the ‘mPassport Seva App’, a per-
son would not require access to a computer and printer to apply for a passport, the MEA said. Swaraj, while speaking at the launch of the initiatives, said there had been “revolutionary” changes in the process for applying for a passport. There were 77 Passport Seva Kendras made available in 48 years, while 231 more were added in the last 48 months, she said at the event attended by Minister of State for Communications Manoj Sinha and Minister of State for External Affairs General (Retd) V K Singh. Noting that at present there were 307 PSKs in the country, she announced that at least one PSK or POPSK would be made available in all the 543 Lok Sabha constituencies. Swaraj said unnecessary requirements for a passport have been scrapped since she took charge of the ministry, including doing away with marriage certificate.
Police question Noida woman’s claim of harassment in passport case
A week after a Noida-based woman in an inter-faith marriage alleged communal harassment at the passport office in Lucknow, the police on Tuesday said they found a discrepancy in her application form. In its verification report to the Regional Passport Office, police said the woman, Tanvi Seth, did not provide true details of her residential address. While Ms. Seth had mentioned Lucknow as her residence, Lucknow Senior Superintendent of Police Deepak Sharma said that during investigation it was found that she had been living in Noida and not in the U.P. capital. According to the rules, in order to clear police verification for a passport a person must be living at a particular location for one year, the officer said. “We have sent a report to the regional passport office saying that she was not continuously living at the said address [in Lucknow] for the past one year,” Mr. Sharma told reporters. The police, however, did not clarify if the discrepancy in residential proof could lead to the seizure of Ms. Seth’s passport, saying that the passport officials would take the next step. Ms. Seth and her husband Anas Siddiqui were issued passports on June 21, a day after they narrated on Twitter how they were allegedly subjected to humiliation on communal lines by an official at the passport office. While Ms. Seth had gone there for a new passport, her husband Siddiqui wanted to re-
Mohammad Anas Siddiqui and Tanvi Seth with their passports. new his. The issue came to light when Ms. Seth reached out to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj complaining that she faced harassment at the passport office for having a Muslim husband and was chided by the granting officer for not changing her surname after marriage. Mr. Siddiqui later added that the passport official allegedly also asked him to change his name into a Hindu one and also take “pheras” and “chant mantras.” The couple claimed that the official was allegedly “extremely rude and demeaning in his behaviour”. The passport official Vikas Mishra was transferred to
Gorakhpur, even though he dismissed the allegations. He claimed that Ms. Seth had provided a false declaration of her name and location and engaged in “suppression of facts”, and he was only doing his duty in verifying the details. Mr. Mishra had said Ms. Seth had hidden from him that she had undergone a name change and had registered as Shadia Hasan in her nikahnama. While Regional Passport Officer Peeyush Verma’s landline phone was continuously busy, Mr. Siddiqui did not respond to phone calls and messages. The couple have also restricted access to their social media accounts. —The Hindu

U.S. Supreme Court upholds Trump travel ban
Chennai youth to send ‘world’s lightest’ satellite to space
The court held that the challengers had failed to show that the ban violates either U.S. immigration law or the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment prohibition on the government favoring one religion over another.
Four city students build a satellite weighing 33.39 grams, probably the world’s lightest and cheapest
The U.S. Supreme Court on June 26 handed Donald Trump one of the biggest victories of his presidency, upholding his travel ban targeting several Muslim-majority countries. The 5-4 ruling, with the court’s five conservatives in the majority, ends for now a fierce fight in the courts over whether the policy represented an unlawful Muslim ban. Mr. Trump can now claim vindication after lower courts had blocked his travel ban announced in September 2017, as well as two prior versions, in legal challenges brought by the State of Hawaii and others. The court held that the challengers had failed to show that the ban violates either U.S. immigration law or the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment prohibition on the government favoring one religion over another. Mr. Trump quickly reacted on Twitter: “SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS TRUMP TRAVEL BAN. Wow!” Writing for the court, Chief Justice John Roberts said that the government “has set forth a sufficient national security justification” to prevail. “We express no view on the soundness of the policy,” Roberts added. The ruling affirmed broad presidential discretion over who is allowed to enter the United States. It means that the current ban can remain in effect and that Mr. Trump could potentially add more countries. Mr. Trump has said the policy is needed to protect the country against attacks by Islamic militants. The current ban, announced in September 2017, prohibits entry into the United States of most people from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen. The Supreme Court allowed it to go largely into effect in December 2017 while the legal challenge continued. The challengers have argued the policy was motivated by Mr. Trump’s enmity toward Muslims and urged courts to take into account his inflammatory comments during the 2016 presidential campaign. Mr. Trump as a candidate called for “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.” The travel ban was one of Mr. Trump’s signature hardline immigration policies that have been a central part of his presidency and “America First” approach. Mr. Trump issued his first version just a week after taking office, though it was quickly halted by the courts. Chad initially was on the list of countries targeted by Mr. Trump that was announced in September 2017, but he removed it on April 10, 2018. Iraq and Sudan were on earlier versions of the ban. Venezuela and North Korea also were targeted in the current policy. Those restrictions were not challenged in court. Mr. Trump also has moved to rescind protections for young immigrants sometimes called Dreamers brought into the United States illegally as children, acted against States and cities that protect illegal immigrants, ended protected status for certain immigrants in the country for decades, intensified deportation efforts and pursued limits on legal immigration. Mr. Trump last week retreated on his administration’s practice of separating the children of immigrants from their parents when families were detained illegally entering the United States. The top court in June and December 2017 allowed two versions of the ban to take effect while court challenges ran their course but had not resolved the legal merits of the challenges until now. His lawyers said that only Mr. Trump’s actions since he became President in January 2017 should be relevant to the case. During the April 25, 2018 arguments before the justices, Solicitor-General Noel Francisco said it was “crystal clear” that the travel restrictions were not a manifestation of Mr. Trump’s call for a Muslim ban.
Harikrishnan KG clutches the small box in his hand carefully. He nimbly opens it, revealing a concealed black cube, and props it on the table in front of us. It is just about double the size of the sugar cubes in the coffee shop we’re sitting in. But this isn’t just any trivial cube. It is a satellite. What Harikrishnan and his three friends from the Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS) have achieved over the past few months is remarkable... they have designed a satellite weighing just 33.39 grams, which could probably set a record as the world’s lightest and cheapest satellite. The boys have called it Jai Hind 1-S. Jai Hind was made mostly on the campus and homes, with locally sourced materials. But it has a long way to go, literally. It will travel to the United States next month and find a place, among other scientific material, at the Colorado Space Grant Consortium, NASA. There, it will be put in a special high-pressure balloon and sent to — hold your breath — space. Jai Hind’s inception started a year ago, when Harikrishnan chanced upon Cubes in Space, a competition across the world
for students who have a penchant for innovation in science. “I’d long wanted to build a rocket, having been inspired by films like October Sky. Growing up, I realised that it might be a costly affair. Working on a satellite was a tempting alternative.” His friends — Amarnath P, Giri Prasad T and Sudhi G — shared his dream and when he bounced the idea of building a satellite to them, they were up for it. “We read about a team that had previously built a satellite weighing 64 grams, and wanted to build one that weighed less than that,” says Amarnath. The work wasn’t easy; apart from sourcing the materials, they had to scour the Internet for information. Thankfully, they got help from close quarters, when a professor, G Dinesh Kumar, volunteered to mentor them. They chose nylon as one of the core materials to make the satellite, a decision they took after much apprehension. But they’re confident now. “We’re excited to see how it’ll react in space. We’re confident that nylon will withstand the pressures of being in outer space,” says Giri Prasad. The belief stems from the many games they’ve played with Jai Hind in the last few months, like placing it inside a balloon
and flying it from the top of their college terrace. And placing it inside the fridge for a few hours. And lighting it up with a cigarette lighter. The four come from varied backgrounds: one of them is a handball player, one has spent a considerable part of his childhood in Dubai, while the other two have been serious about “planes and flying” from a young age. But currently, they’re all focussed on how their satellite fares in outer space. “It will be a 15-20 hour journey, sometime in August,” says Sudhi. Once the highpressure balloon, containing scientific material by students from across the world, travels up to a certain point in space, it will burst and all the material will be gathered by the team at NASA. “We can’t wait for the day when we will get our Jai Hind in our hands,” says Harikrishnan. Once they get it, all they have to do is retrieve the SD card that will contain all the data and findings. “We hope to find data like temperature, UV density and vapour pressure, among other things, at various points of the satellite’s upward journey. This will help in research and better understanding of the environment in outer space.”
