The scene depicted Hanuman burning down Ravana’s city of Lanka where he went as a representative of Rama after the abduction of Sita. The ‘Petavi Lanka Hanumanth’ was followed by the most strenuous piece of the performance, the Varnam, an ultimate test of the dancer’s talent, combining complex footwork with elaborate storytelling. Veda performed the ‘Vrindavani Venu’ where she delightfully depicted the effect of Krishna’s flute. Her depiction brought to life nature’s joy and abandonment as it is profoundly impacted by the divinity of sound from Krishna’s flute. Meera presented the next piece ‘Omkaara Kaarini’ where she embodied Goddess Durga in annihilating the buffaloheaded demon ‘Mahishasura’. In fact, in the 2018 Readathon program, kids in Houston were able to raise $10,000. Given that it only takes $25 to educate one kid, the Houston chapter alone has touched the lives of hundreds. Recently, on June 23, Manjit Soni, the Houston coordinator of the Pratham Readathon, launched the 2019 Summer Readathon with a dazzling event to welcome all of the children participating. The readers had a wonderful time, where they had a chance to know each other through word games, such as anagrams, that all book-lovers could appreciate. Also, at this event, these ambitious readers had the opportunity to discuss and share their favorite books with one another, encouraging each other to continue to read and contribute to the Pratham cause. Mani Surkari, volunteer coordinator of Pratham USA, particularly recommended an interesting book, titled Beeline, by Shalini Shankar, which explains why kids from an Indian background excel in spelling bees. One of the most touching moments of this event was the distribution of thank you cards by Pratham National Board Member and CFO of Pratham

USA, Swatantra Jain. These cards were made by the children in India who have benefitted from this readathon. As the participants of the readathon received the thank you cards, which were filled with pictures of the kids in India smiling and happily clutching their books to their chests, these participants had the opportunity to see their impact on the lives of others. As Malcolm X once said: “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” The Pratham organization encourages all kids and adults to join this fight for education, as they work to create opportunities for the future generation in India. So, please join the Houston Readathon Team or start your own team in your area and brighten the lives of underprivileged kids in India. Houston City Council honors IACCGH

HOUSTON On the heels of a successful 20th anniversary gala that saw a turnout of 850 members, guests, elected officials and the city’s top business leaders; IACCGH was honored with a Proclamation for their 20 years of dedicated service to the business community. This recognition was co-sponsored by Vice Mayor Pro tem Jerry Davis and Council member Jack Christie. It was read out and presented by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner at the City Council Chambers and marked June 25th 2019 as the Indo American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Houston Day. Appreciating the Chamber’s efforts in accelerating Houston’s economy through its many Outreach efforts and connecting Houston and India through trade delegations, Vice Mayor Pro-Tem Jerry Davis stated “As the IACCGH represents the most dynamic companies and the most ingenious entrepreneurs in the Houston region, their determination is living testimony of the partnership between Houston and India”. Council member Dr. Jack Christie also spoke highly of the Chamber noting that “There are no better loyal friends than the members of the Indo-American Chamber.” The Proclamation was accepted by IACCGH President Swapan Dhairyawan and Executive Director Jagdip Ahluwalia. Several Chamber members and Resource Partner SBA’s Deputy District Director Mark Winchester were also present. As the Chamber enters its third decade of service, Executive Director Ahluwalia reaffirmed the Chamber’s “commitment to encourage entrepreneurship and promote businesses.” Accepting this honor, President Swapan Dhairyawan said “we truly appreciate the unique recognition from the City of Houston and will continue to do the good work for years to come.” For more information visit www.iaccgh.com. to national security, by taking the war to the enemy soil after the Pulwama terrorist attack. The 2019 election gave a clear verdict at the national level, giving absolute majority to the BJP and the smaller, “khichdi” parties were wiped out at the national level, though they won at the state level. Today’s political regime is likely to gain international fame and become politically and economically stronger, Hegde predicted. The BJP has been accused of being a Hindu extremist party, and killing minorities in violent attacks. This narrative flows from the current concept of secularism in India, where pro-Hinduism means anti-secularism. Hegde clearly rejected such a false definition. “I am a Hindu, but I do not believe in that type of secularism and India is not following that secularism today,” he said. There have been instances of attacks on beef-eaters, but such cases of violence are far and few in between compared to previous regimes. Religious riots have always been there since the Partition of India and thousands of people from both the communities have been killed. Even in the Gujarat riots, where Modi is accused, more Hindus died in police firing than Muslims, Hegde said. While the BJP is not free

from religious violence, it is being taken out of context and is contrary to the party’s principles. There are a few in the party who resort to violence and political parties tend to exploit such instances during election. But the present government is following secularism in its true sense, according to Hegde. The election results showed that minorities and Muslims voted for Modi in large numbers as evidenced in Uttar Pradesh. The opposition raised bogus charges about tampering with the electronic voting machines as if the BJP tampered the machines in the north and won the election, but how did the BJP lose in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, if the machines were tampered? BJP managed to stop the dominance of the Communist Party in West Bengal. BJP elected more Muslim MPs and women than the Congress party. Politics was at its worst in the last election where the opposition called the Prime Minister a thief and had to apologize in the Supreme Court that it was said in the heat of the election campaign. “Today I see a better India economically, politically and internationally. Nobody can raise a finger against the integrity of Prime Minister Modi.” Hegde reinforced the objectivity of his opinion saying he does not belong to the BJP nor is seeking any position in the government.

The Small Independent Motel Association of Houston (SIMA) and the Indo-American Political Action Committee of Greater Houston (IAPAC)) hosted a reception on behalf of the Indian American communtiy, to honor Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. SIMA and IAPAC President Hasu Patel welcomed and introduced Turner. At a very well attended event at India House, Turner, who is up for re-election on November 5th, spoke about issues that were close to his heart and provided his vision for the future of Greater Houston. He thanked the Indo-American community for always being there for the city and the valuable contribution they made during Hurricane Harvey. He mentioned the critical role SIMA members played during the hurricane by providing hotel rooms for thousands of displaced victims and donating to the Mayor’s Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. Turner shared his overall mission as recognizing that diversity is the backbone of the city and is best demonstrated by active diverse participation at the city, on Boards and commissions. Turner shared how the pension liability was at $8.2B when he assumed office and is now at 4.03B currently. Similarly, unemployment in the city is the lowest since 1981. Continuing his talk relating to employment, he shared statistics about summer jobs that were at 450 when he assumed office, and over the years have grown exponentially to 1000 to 10,985 this year. To a round of applause from the hospitality community, Turner talked about his plans to bring back a theme park to Houston which will attract tourists and other enterprises to Houston and provide entrepreneurship opportunities to Houstonians. Speaking about growth in Houston, Turner said the city has identified five specific neighborhoods in Houston that were underutilized and various initiatives are being put into place to bring in development in those areas with appropriate incentives. As a follow-through, he mentioned the city intended identifying five more neighborhoods where similar plans will be implemented,. Mayor Turner thanked the Indo-American community for the wonderful trade mission to India where he met with the Vice President of India Venkaiah Naidu and several ministers. The mayor also had a delightful visit to the Akshardham temple. He also mentioned that he would do what was needed to help establish a direct flight from Houston to India, in the near future. Appreciating the mayor for all his initiatives and services to the city, Hasu Patel thanked the guests and informed them that the evening’s efforts had raised $50,000 towards the mayor’s reelection campaign.

The American Dream, Our American Spirit

On 4th July, 243 years ago America proclaimed freedom and Democracy was born - a “land of the free and home of the brave.” 4th July is a time to look forward to something that makes us bigger, better, stronger, smarter and richer. America is famous for its free-market capitalism in the world. We are unique and our national spirit expresses itself in unparalleled courage and generosity, creative innovation and diversity. Our hospitality and friendliness are universally known to immigrants, students, visitors and investors alike. To be an American means to be able to live in a country where you have various religious freedoms and exercise your Godgiven rights. You feel free immediately. America is a nation built by business. As the 30th President of the United States John Calvin Coolidge had said - the chief business of the American people is business, the chief business of American history is business and that the story of the nation is the story of business history. Independence Day has a special meaning for trade and commerce as America has an undying devotion to entrepreneurship and the limitless opportunities available to build and grow your own “American Treasures.” It’s a tribute to Americans who are welcome to pursue their American dreams. The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and doing well. America ranks number 1 out of 137

countries listed on the Global Entrepreneurship and Development Index as of 2018. Companies like Google, Apple, HP, Amazon, and Disney all began in a garage. President Trump, an entrepreneur at heart is blowing the conch shell, “Make America Great Again,” making history by winning and upholding the Article of the Constitution that promises a “stable, profitable environment for private enterprise.” Trump will not hesitate to continue standing up for American families, businesses and workers. He is the guardian of every American life and under his leadership, we are certain to achieve the dream of national rejuvenation and an answer to a prayer. A cut in the U.S. corporate tax rate is creating an environment for business like we haven’t seen in many, many decades from creating jobs to boosting productivity to unleashing innovations. This is a win-win for workers, employers and the economy as a surge in capital investment, higher corporate productivity and profits, and a tight labor market where workers are getting higher salaries, wages and benefits. We’re in the Goldilocks zone as U.S. economy is “really ripping” with more job openings than unemployed Americans. Trump’s “America First” doctrine is required more today than ever. He is the “Everest of Disruption.” His unpredictability makes life more compli-

cated for leaders as they aren’t sure which way the winds will shift. He is used to dealing with political thugs and coming up with tools that can shake them to their core. He recognizes that every world leader - including Angela Merkel, Xi Jinping and Emmanuel Macron seek to enrich their own countries. He sees the world and the problems in way other leaders don’t see. The world has changed since 2016. The global order is gone. It is time to build a new one. It is good the leader of the new world is President Trump, the “Churchill of the 21st century,” reclaiming America’s proud destiny. He is breaking out into “Kumbaya” over trade, with world leaders. He is always a lightning rod and there will be a lot more lightning. The U.S job force has one of the greatest “work martyr” working spirit, desire and will to advancement, sincerity and ingenuity known in the industrial world. At Prince, we have changed lives creating an atmosphere where people can work hard, further their education, but also have opportunities to have a life as we invest in our associates and the communities we serve in. A core American belief is “If you take the risk, you bear the consequence.” Nowhere but in America could somebody who started with as little as I had come as far as I have. I came here with nothing and this great nation gave me an opportunity

to live the American Dream. The best way to show my gratitude is my commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility and inspiring the younger generation. We are proud to be awarded America’s most honored business. We fly the flags of best-known brand names in lodging with the highest pride, respect and honor and are blessed with the Asian American Hotel Association (AAHOA) Humanitarian honor. Our business is cultivating admiration and respect, being good stewards of society, engaging our team following the culture of values: dedication, integrity, respect, excellence, community, teamwork and spirit. Our team members present the indomitable spirit and moral standards of our company to the world, making right decisions and having the courage to envision the future as they believe too that our future shouldn’t be something that just happens to us. Our future should be something we create. I would love to see every employee achieve the American Dream of working hard with honesty, owning their own homes, putting their children through college and retiring with respect and dignity. Business is about trust and for us it has everything to do with ethics or morality, which is our moral as well as our operating compass. I add my own voice of thankfulness and gratitude for this great nation of opportu-

nity, promise and hope. Being an Hotelier has shown me that people are more similar than different no matter where you go. When I visit our hotels, I see God through his creation and the diversity of America. Enjoy old-fashioned parades, county fairs, dancing, patriotic songs and fireworks. Wishing everyone a very happy, safe, and memorable Fourth of July holiday. Make every day count and create the very best memories with those you love. Let your success story be the result of your hard work, righteous good and vision that came to light, your God-given talents that gave you purpose, and the accomplishment and pride that you finished something you set out to do continuing to carry the torch forward! God Bless America. Happy Birthday, America! At 243 years old, you’ve never looked better.

RELIGION

Guru Poornima

There are so many Gurus from different religious sects that it becomes confusing to choose one Guru. What is the process of finding a Guru?

By SWAMI MUKUNDANANDA There is a saying in Hindi: “Pani piyo chhanake, guru banao janake” “Drink water only after filtering it; make a Guru only after carefully knowing him.” We must not accept anyone as our Guru, merely because of a friend’s suggestion; we must ourselves recognize someone as a true Guru, and only then should we surrender to him. However, just as it is not possible for a Grade One student to evaluate the capability of a college teacher, similarly, it is not easy to recognize a Guru, who is a Divine Personality, while we are only beginning the path of spirituality. Yet, there are certain characteristics that provide helpful indications: 1. The true Guru’s words are very impacting. Although we may have heard and read the same knowledge many times without being moved, when we hear it from the mouth of a God-realized Saint, the words change us from within. The reason for this is that the Sadguru does not merely elucidate what he has read in books; he explains from the depths of personal realization. 2. Whatever doubts we have on the spiritual path, if we place them before the Guru, he or she can easily dispel our confusions. A mere theoretical scholar of the scriptures cannot do this. However, the Sadguru possesses realized knowledge, for he or she has seen the Truth, and is able to reveal it with the benefit of experience to sincere seekers. 3. A true Guru does not give his or her disciple material allurements. Rather, he teaches his followers that the world is not the goal. Nowadays, many socalled saints claim to have a magic formula for removing all the material miseries and bestowing money, wealth, prestige, etc. Allured by such false statements, people flock to

them in thousands. We must beware of such imposters who have not yet even understood that detachment from the world, and not material attainments, is the goal of spiritual life. 4. If we associate with a true Guru, we will naturally find ourselves getting attached to God and detached from the world. 5. The above points are all helpful in recognizing a Saint, but the strongest indication will come from God Himself. The Lord is seated in our hearts, and when He sees that we have a sincere desire to meet Him, He will guide us to a true Guru and create faith in Him. And when the inspiration comes from God, we will know it by its intensity; our heart will urge us that we have found the Guru we were looking for. Swami Mukundananda is a world-renowned teacher of spirituality, Yoga and Meditation. He is the founder of the unique Yogic system JKYog, also known as Yoga for the Body, Mind and Soul. He received His degrees in Engineering and Management from IIT (Delhi) and IIM (Kolkata). Swamiji is the senior disciple of Jagadguru Shree Kripaluji Maharaj. For the last 3 decades, Swamiji has been inspiring people all over the world, on the path of Spirituality, holistic health, yoga, meditation, service to society and God-realization. He has been invited to speak at various Fortune 500 companies like Google, Oracle etc. For the youth, Swamiji has conducted programs at prestigious universities such as Stanford, Princeton, MIT, Kellogg and Duke University.

NEWS Pope to declare Mariam Thresia as saint on Oct. 13

Pope Francis will declare Mariam Thresia Chiramel Mankidiyan, an Indian nun, a saint on October 13, her congregation said in Kochi on Tuesday. The Pope has formally approved the canonisation of Mariam Thresia, foundress of the Sisters of the Holy Family, at an ordinary public consistory of cardinals on causes of canonisation at the Vatican on July 1, it said. He has decreed that the canonisation will take place in St. Peters Square on October 13 this year, the congregation said. The nun from Kerala will be canonised during a Mass along with John Henry Newman from England, Italian Josephine Vannini, Swiss Marguerite Bays and Brazilian Irm Dulce Pontes, it said. The nun belongs to the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church. She was born in Puthenchira in Thrissur district on April 26, 1876 and died in Kuzhikkattussery on June 8, 1926. The nun was declared venerable on June 28, 1999 and beatified on April 9, 2000 by Pope St. John Paul II in Rome. She was professed in 1914. The foundress and the first member of the Congregation of the Holy Family, Mariam Thresia, “with indomitable energy and utter trust in divine providence”, built, in less than 12 years, three new convents, two schools, two hostels, a study house, and an orphanage, a Vatican document said. “Education of girls was Mariam Thresia’s liberation theology in action, without the slogan. Several young girls were attracted to her by her simplicity, humility and shining sanctity. At the time of her death at the age of 50, there were 55 Sisters in the congregation, 30 boarders and 10 orphans under her care,” a Church document said. The Congregation of the Holy Family has over 1,500 professed sisters, serving in Kerala, in the mission areas of North India, in Germany, Italy and Ghana, with a total of 176 houses in seven provinces and 119 novices, it said. The Vatican had earlier declared three Kerala-born Indian Catholics as Saints. While Fr Kuriakose Elias Chavara and Sister Euphrasia were canonised into the league of saints by Pope Francis in 2014, sister Alphonsa was declared a saint in 2008.

‘VHP only against love jihad, not opposed to interfaith marriages’ “The VHP is not against interfaith marriages but a conspiracy is on under which a Muslim youth in a pre-planned manner traps a Hindu girl and then converts her to his religion by taking undue advantage of her innocence,” VHP national spokesperson Vinod Bansal told PTI in Jammu on June 30. Speaking to PTI after the conclusion of the VHP’s twoday central managing committee meeting in Jammu, Mr. Bansal said the issue of “love jihad” was also discussed in the meeting, chaired by its national president Vishnu Sadashiv Kokje and attended by 225 senior office-bearers. “We never opposed marriage of couples belonging to different religions. We are against ‘love jihad’. If there is no mala fide intention, we have no issue (with interfaith marriage),” said Mr. Bansal. The VHP meeting also demanded tough action against cow slaughter and advocated a separate Ministry for the protection of the animal, revered by Hindus. He said the meeting, which concluded on June 30, demanded a separate cow protection Ministry to oversee an end of the cow slaughter in the country and an early construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. “The meeting expressed hope that the Central government will take neces-

sary steps for the construction of Ram Temple. The people of the country will render full cooperation to the government in this regard,” he said. “We want government to act tough against cow slaughter,” said Mr. Bansal, claiming that incidents of mob lynching is being blown out of proportion as only a few incidents had taken place and the reason later turned out to be something else. The Hindus have a sentiment attached with the cow and the people of other religions should respect it even as the cow is equally beneficial for all. “We condemn all incidents of violence against anyone including cow vigilantes who often come on roads after they feel nothing is done to protect the revered animal. Nobody is speaking against the atrocities committed against them,” he said. Cow vigilantes are protecting animals and cannot imagine taking away human lives, claimed Mr. Bansal. Referring to the killing of Tabrez Ansari in Jharkhand, Mr. Bansal said though his death looks suspicious, an incident of crime should be seen through the criminal angle only. Mr. Bansal said the meeting also discussed the alleged practice of having Christian missionaries in management committees of some temples in parts of south India and being

given money out of the temples’ offerings. “The money should be spent for the welfare of Hindus alone,” the VHP spokesperson said. The meeting was also apprised of the organisation’s oversees activities and the steps being taken by it to promote Indian customs, traditions, nationalism and selfless service among the new generation of countrymen living in different parts of the world, he said. He said the VHP has decided to celebrate the 550th birth day of Guru Nanak Dev throughout the country this year. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, joins Twitter RSS office bearers, including its chief Mohan Bhagwat, have made their debut on microblogging site Twitter. Besides Mr. Bhagwat, six others, including Suresh “Bhaiyyaji” Joshi, the sangh’s general secretary, and Suresh Soni, its joint general secretary, joined Twitter. “The accounts have been created to stop the spread of misinformation being spread by parody accounts,” sources said. Bhagwat’s verified Twitter handle is @DrMohanBhagwat. He has not tweeted anything so far and follows just one account - the official handle of the RSS, which has over 1.3 million followers, and has, till now, been the organisation’s platform for releasing statements and updates.

Dawood’s aide in UK Nusrat Jahan on fatwa: ‘No one should opposes extradition to U.S. comment on my dress, faith is beyond attire’ Dawood Ibrahim’s top Pakistani aide, who is lodged in a UK jail awaiting extradition to the US, is suffering from depression and has made at least three suicide attempts in the past, making him unfit for deportation, his lawyers told a British court. Jabir Moti, 51, who was arrested by Scotland Yard last year, appeared before the Westminster Magistrates’ Court here at the start of his trial on Monday. He faces extradition to the US after an FBI probe charged him with money laundering, extortion and conspiracy to import unlawful substances such as heroine. Moti, who is referred to during the court proceedings under different names like Jabir Motiwala and Jabir Siddiq, is accused of laundering around USD 1.4 million to date on behalf of the D Company, headed by Dawood -- a key accused in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case. “Mr Motiwala, a high-ranking member of D Company, travels extensively and conducts meetings for its head -- one Dawood Ibrahim, an Indian Muslim who along with his brother Anis Ibrahim are fugitives from Indian justice,” said barrister John Hardy, appearing on behalf of the US government. In his opening statement, Hardy laid out details of the D Company as an international criminal organisation based in India, Pakistan and the UAE which carried out illegal activities in the US, including narcotics trafficking and extortion. He told Judge John Zani that the FBI’s investigations, dating back to 2009, involved a series of confidential sources who held undercover meetings and telephone and email interactions with Moti, which implicate him as a lead money launderer for the D Company. Moti’s legal team, led by barrister Edward Fitzgerald, raised the issue of “passage of time” as part of his defence, claiming that the alleged offences date back many years and the “long delay” between 2014 and 2018 had not been “explained” by the US authorities. However, the crux of the defence case seemed to focus on Moti’s mental health condition, which they claimed would be exacerbated on being held in “adverse prison conditions in New York”. “He has a long and documented history of suffering from depression and has made at least three suicide attempts in 2008, 2011 and 2015 and has remained in the care of a

psychiatrist in Pakistan since 2008,” Fitzgerald told the court, adding that given the “gravity of his condition”, Moti would be a high suicide risk if he were to be extradited. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), arguing on behalf of the US government, submitted that while it is accepted the defendant has had mental health issues in the past, the issue for the court would be to determine what measures can be taken to mitigate any risk posed by that condition if he was to be extradited. Both sides are set to produce witnesses before the court to strengthen their arguments for and against. The charge of importing heroine into the US carries a life sentence, which will also be a focal point of the arguments. The trial is scheduled for a three-day period until Wednesday but is likely to spill over into a fourth day later this month in order to incorporate all the witness statements. Judge Zani was first asked to rule on the issue of identity to ascertain that Jabir Moti aka Jabir Motiwala aka Jabir Siddiq was indeed the person sought by the US authorities as part of their investigations. The judge did rule on the issue and it was agreed that the accused would be referred to as Jabir Siddiq when being addressed directly and as Jabir Motiwala during the course of the legal arguments. Moti, who appeared in the dock unshaven and in a scruffy T-shirt, has been lodged at Wandsworth prison – the same prison in south-west London where fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi is currently being held pending his extradition trial sought by India in relation to the nearly USD 2 billion Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud and money laundering case. Moti was arrested by the Scotland Yard from a London hotel in August 2018 in connection with a US grand jury indictment following an extensive FBI probe. The charges against him relate to a period between 2010 and 2014 and could carry a sentence of around 25 years behind bars in the US. His defence team has previously disputed allegations of him being a key aide of D Company as “obvious nonsense”, describing Moti as a “man of exemplary character” who is a tax paying, prominent businessman based in Karachi and accredited as a stock broker, with a family stockbroking business dating back to the 1950s in Pakistan.

Trinamool Congress’ Nusrat Jahan takes oath as a member of the Lok Sabha on June 25, 2019. A section of Deoband-based clerics reportedly issued a fatwa against the Trinamool Congress MP for wearing vermilion, sporting a mangalsutra and saying Vande Matram. Newly elected MP and actor Nusrat Jahan has said no one should comment on what she chooses to wear as “faith is beyond any attire”, refusing to toe the line of hardline Muslim clerics who criticised her for wearing vermilion and mangalsutra. A section of Deoband-based clerics reportedly also issued a fatwa (diktat) against the Trinamool Congress MP. The firsttime MP from West Bengal’s

Basirhat came to Parliament on June 25 wearing vermilion and sporting a mangalsutra, and said Vande Matram after taking oath. Ms. Jahan, 29, married businessman Nikhil Jain at a ceremony in Turkey earlier in June. The clerics claimed Ms. Jahan disrespected Islam by marrying into the Jain religion and called her attire “un-Islamic”. “Muslims can only marry Muslims and are only allowed to bend before Allah. Islam has no place for Vande Matram, mangalsutra and vermilion and they are against the religion,” claimed Mufti Asad Kasami of

Jamia Shaikh-ul Hind. Responding to the criticism, Ms. Jahan on tweeted on June 29: “Paying heed or reacting to comments made by hardliners of any religion only breeds hatred and violence, and history bears testimony to that.” Affirming that she represents an “inclusive India...Which is beyond the barriers of caste, Creed and religion,” she said, “...I still remain a Muslim. ...And none should comment on what I choose to wear..... Faith is beyond attire.” She commented on her tweet that faith “is more about believing and practising the invaluable doctrines of religion”.

Technique developed to check perfection of Yoga asanas

A team of scientists at the Bangalore-based Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has found a method to measure whether the yogic asanas are being performed in a correct manner or not. They have developed a new mathematical metrics to quantify the expertise in terms of stability and steadiness. The metrics is based on sEMG or Surface electromyography (sEMG) signals. The sEMG signals are a measure of muscle activity which records and differentiates between the electric activity of groups of muscles at rest and during activity. The procedure is performed using a single or an array of electrodes placed on the skin surface over the muscles to be tested. Recording can be made using a hand-held device, which is applied to the skin surface at different sites. Electrical activity is assessed by computer analysis of the frequency spectrum, amplitude, or root mean square of the electrical action potential. In the IISC study, the data captured from instrument called 3-axis Accelerometers is being used in qualitative validation of the muscle activity results obtained from proposed sEMG analysis. The study supported by Department of Science & Technology’s (DST) SATYAM programme was conducted in the Biomechanics Lab of the IISc. Around 60 healthy participants between 21-60 years including male and female had participated. Before conducting the experiment, each subject was given clear knowledge about the asana to be performed and the orientation was verified before mounting the sensors. The data was collected for approximately 110 seconds and subjects stayed in final position for 20 seconds with normal breathing and relaxed mind. Yogasanas such as Trikonasana, Vrikshasana, Veerabhadrasana-1, Veerabhadrasana-2, Veerabhadrasana-3, Parsvakonasana were tested using the method and the sEMGs of experts and novices tested. Yoga asanas need to be performed with near perfection in order to derive maximum benefits. The method proposed and tested in this project helps assess the correctness of performance. This paves way for making appropriate corrections, thus enabling practitioners to derive maximum benefit from the asanas. The method helps distinguish between an expert and a novice in the field of yoga, according to an official from the DST. With subsequent research and analysis, this method can be used for generating a quantitative measure of the ‘expertise’ of any subject being monitored, which would be essential considering the increasing popularity of yoga around the world. The study will guide the performer of yoga to do it with near perfection and also will elucidate the kinds of muscles that the performer can target, said the official.

STORY OF MAHATMA GANDHI

CHEF’S CORNER

Gandhi gains in stature as honest lawyer It was late in the evening when the train pulled into Pretoria. Gandhi stayed at a hotel that night and moved into a lodge the next day. There he began to study the Abdulla lawsuit. Even while he was working on it, he found time to call a meeting of the Indians in Pretoria. This he did with the help of Tyeb Haji Khan Muhammad, an influential Indian merchant. Only a handful of Indians attended. It was the first time Gandhi had addressed a meeting. “There is too much division among us,” he said. “Why should we be kept apart by differences in birth, family, caste, and religion? Let us form a league, representing every group, and keep the Government informed of our difficulties and our needs.” The audience listened to him with great interest. It was decided to hold regular meetings of all the Indians in Pretoria. Meanwhile, Gandhi was entrusted with the task of translating into English all the correspondence between Dada, Abdulla & Co. and the rival party. After studying all the facts, he was convinced that his client’s claim was just. He knew, however, that if the case was taken to court it would drag on for a long time, so he called together representatives of both parties. “Why don’t you choose a good man, whom you both trust, to arbitrate between you?” he said. The parties listened to him with great attention. They were astonished at this new idea. This young man was not the kind of lawyer they were familiar with; they appreciated his stand and agreed to his suggestion. An arbitrator was appointed, and he gave his award in favor of Gandhi’s clients. Although they had won, Gandhi persuaded his clients to be lenient with their opponent. They agreed not to demand the money due all at once, but in easy installments spread over a long period. Both parties were happy over the settlement. Gandhi’s first success as a lawyer was not a crushing victory over an opponent, but the triumph of good sense and humanity. In the Orange Free State, Indians had been deprived of all their rights by a law enacted in 1888. They could stay there only if they did menial work. Traders were sent away with nominal compensation. Under a law passed in 1886, Indians who wanted to live in the Transvaal were forced to pay an annual poll-tax of £ 3 per head. There they were not allowed to own land except in certain locations. They had no freedom to move about. If they wanted to go out of their houses after 9 p.m., they had to carry a permit with them. They were not allowed to use certain highways at all. Gandhi felt humiliated at the way Indians were treated there. He thought it was his duty to defend their rights and remove their grievances. He often went out for an evening walk with an English friend, Mr. Coates, and he rarely reached home before 10 p.m. He

Gandhi was not just preoccupied with his law practice but also gave time to social issues, especially those relating to the way Indians were treated in South Africa. His first success as a lawyer was not a crushing victory over an opponent, but the triumph of good sense and humanity. had obtained a letter from the State Attorney allowing him to be out of doors at any time without police interference. One evening Gandhi was alone, walking at his usual brisk pace, when he was suddenly attacked and knocked down. He was injured. He struggled to his feet to face a police constable. “That will teach you to obey the law,” shouted the policeman. “No Indian has the right to walk past the President’s house. Didn’t you know that?” The policeman kicked him. “Gandhi, are you hurt?” asked a familiar, friendly voice. It was Mr. Coates. He happened to be passing that way when he saw Gandhi being attacked. Mr. Coates warned the policeman. “This man is my friend and a distinguished lawyer,” he said. “If he brings a complaint against you, I shall be his witness.” Then he turned to his friend and said, “I am very sorry, Gandhi, that you have been so rudely assaulted.” “You need not be sorry,” said Gandhi. “How is the poor man to know? All colored people are the same to him. I have made it a rule not to go to court in respect of any personal grievance.” “Just like you,” said Coates, who was still very angry at the policeman's behavior. Coates turned again to the policeman and said, “You should tell an Indian politely what the regulations are not knock him down.” “Never mind,” said Gandhi. “I have already forgiven him.” Now that the Abdulla case had been settled, Gandhi thought there was no need for him to stay on in South Africa. Towards the end of 1893 he went back to Durban to book his passage to India. Abdulla

arranged a farewell party in his honor. While going through the newspapers that day, Gandhi was surprised to read that a bill was pending before the Natal Legislative Assembly which would deprive Indians of their right to elect members to the Assembly. He brought this to the notice of the people gathered there for the party. “What do we understand about such matters?” Abdulla Seth said. “We only understand things that affect our trade.” “This bill, if it passes into law, will make our lot extremely difficult,” Gandhi said gravely. “It is the first nail in our coffin. It strikes at the very root of our self-respect.” The Indians now realized what was at stake; but they were unable to decide what to do. They requested Gandhi to postpone his departure and help them. He agreed to stay on for another month and organize resistance to the new bill. Late that night the Indians held a meeting in Abdulla Seth's house under the presidency of Seth Haji Muhammad, the most influential Indian merchant there. They resolved to oppose the Franchise Bill with all their strength. Telegrams were sent to the Speaker of the Assembly and the Premier of Natal requesting them to postpone further discussion on the bill. The Speaker promptly replied that the discussion would be put off for two days. The Natal Indians then drew up a petition to the Legislative Assembly pleading against the bill. This was followed up by another petition to Lord Ripon, the then Secretary of State for the Colonies. This was signed by more than ten thousand Indians. Copies of the petition were circulated in South Africa, England, and India. There was much sympathy for the Natal Indians’ plight, but the campaign had started too late to stop the bill becoming law. However, the campaign did do some good. For the first time, the people of India came to know of the conditions in Natal. An even more important result was the new spirit that now awakened the Indians in South Africa. — To be Continued
