Cricket field opens in Fort Bend County’s Jones Creek Park
Commissioner Andy Meyers pitches the ball to Sen. Lois Kolkurst ready to bat at the wicket. Little league cricket in Fort Bend County received a major boost on Saturday with the formal opening of a cricket field and batting cages at Jones Creek Park on FM 359 in Richmond, thanks to the initiative of Precinct 3 Commissioner Andy Meyers. Congressman Pete Olson, State Senator Lois Kolkhorst, State Representative John Zerwas, Fort Bend County Judge KP George, Precinct 3 Constable Wayne Thompson, and Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Kelly Crow joined Meyers and celebrated the grand opening cricket field. The park has been a collaborative effort between Commissioner Meyers, Indo American Association of Fort Bend, Katy Youth Cricket Club and Energy Youth Cricket Club. This field and batting cages are dedicated to the area clubs for practices and games. In addition to the two local clubs, Sugar Land Youth Cricket Club and Northwest Cricket Club will also play in this facility. The local cricket clubs were playing the game in the SH 290 area in Harris County until now. Meyers plans to develop a multi-purpose sports facility at the Jones Creek Park. Soon the field will have lights and baseball fields will also be added for little league players. A similar cricket field was opened in the Four Corners Community Park in Precinct 4 by Commissioner Ken R. DeMerchant recently. Immediately after the grand opening, Katy Youth Cricket Club and Energy Cricket began their competitive cricket match. Each club has an average of 50 children regularly playing the game. —SESHADRI KUMAR

Indian Americans give $3 million to 2020 presidential candidates
On the Democratic side, Indian American political donations were largely split among Tulsi Gabbard, Kamala Harris and Cory Booker, from left. Indian Americans are a sliver of the nation’s population but a growing political force. They have contributed more than $3 million to 2020 presidential campaigns — more than the coveted donors of Hollywood. On the Democratic side, they are largely split among three candidates who have ties to their community: Sen. Kamala Harris of California, whose mother was born in India; Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, a practicing Hindu; and New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, who counts a large Indian American
population among his constituents. The trio has targeted these wealthy donors from coast to coast. At a recent fundraiser, Harris touted her ties to her mother’s homeland as she sought donations from its descendants. “My grandfather, having been a freedom fighter in India and a very progressive person, put my mother on a plane, a transcontinental flight, which was unheard of in those days, 1959, to go and study at Berkeley,” Harris told about 100 peo-
ple in the backyard of a Washington mansion. Harris, who is the only major presidential candidate with Indian heritage, has raised more than $387,000 from the Indian American community for her 2020 bid, more than any other Democrat in the race, according to a Times analysis of disclosure forms filed by the campaigns. But the senator, who is also of Jamaican descent, is not an overwhelming favorite of Democratic donors: Gabbard was a close second with more than $374,000.
Indian Americans represent just over 1% of the U.S. population. In recent years, they have grown increasingly politically active, donating more to candidates and running for office. Reflecting the community’s leftward tilt, two-thirds of the more than $3 million donated throughout the 2020 election cycle has gone to Democrats, according to a Times analysis
of fundraising reports released July 15. Indian Americans have also donated more than $1 million to committees supporting President Trump. The incumbent has the benefit of being able to accept six-figure checks into a joint fundraising committee with the national and state Republican parties. The DemoSee CAMPAIGN, Page 4

representation from the region and across the country,” said Jugal Malani, convener of the “Howdy, Modi!” organizing committee. cratic candidates are limited to donations of up to $2,800 for the primary and $2,800 for the general election. Though Indian American voters strongly trend Democratic, a vocal minority has embraced the president. They cite his positions on the economy and fighting Islamist terrorism, an issue their motherland has struggled with for decades. “On foreign policy, on protection of industry, on creating jobs ... he has delivered on practically everything he promised,” said Shalabh “Shalli” Kumar, founder of the Republican Hindu Coalition. The Times identified contributors of Indian descent using fundraising disclosures and a database of names compiled by Diane Lauderdale, a social

scientist at the University of Chicago. The list was derived from government surveys in which people provide their last name and a country of ancestry. The method is used by top universities to conduct elections research. However, it cannot identify all Indian Americans, so The Times’ analysis probably represents an undercount. Harris made headlines in the U.S. and India in 2016 when she was elected the first Indian American senator, but she has work to do among donors in the community, experts say. “A fair number of Indian Americans are excited by her candidacy, but she’s still not tapping into that donor base nearly as much as she could,” said Karthick Ramakrishnan, a UC Riverside professor who studies Asian American politics. Ramakrishnan and others note that no ethnic community

is monolithic and that sharing one’s skin color, religion or language does not guarantee support. But some in the Indian American community say Harris’ Indian descent is not as well known as it could be partly because the senator — who attended a historically black college and joined an African American sorority — has embraced her blackness in a way that overshadowed her South Asian heritage. One example they point to was during a June debate when she confronted former Vice President Joe Biden over his past opposition to some forms of busing for school integration. “After the episode in the debate, where she pointedly said, ‘I’m the only black person on the stage’ to Biden … there were a number of people who said, ‘What happened to the other part of her?’” said Shekar Narasim-

han, chairman of the AAPI Victory Fund, a super PAC aimed at mobilizing Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Narasimhan, who is not aligned with any candidate, said Harris had successfully raised money from Indian Americans, or Desis, during runs for attorney general of California and the Senate. But she had not been as much of a face at Indian American events until last year, while other candidates have had a more consistent presence, he said. “People think she got elected to Senate and she forgot about us,” he said. Harris has spoken about how her upbringing included aspects from both of her parents’ cultures, but how her mother raised her and her sister as black girls because that was how they would be viewed by society. “She was determined to make sure we would grow into confident, proud black women,” Harris wrote in her autobiography, “The Truths We Hold.” Manan Trivedi, a physician who hosted Harris’ Washington fundraiser with his wife, Surekha, said they were drawn by Harris’ Indian heritage and her being the child of immigrants: “We have two little girls, ages 5 and 9, and I want them to be able to look up to the president and relate.” But he said they decided to support Harris because they believe she is “whip smart” and best positioned to defeat Trump. “That was the No. 1 criteria,” said Trivedi, 45. Gabbard nearly tied Harris in donations from Indian Americans through June 30, raising almost 10% of her total haul from individual donors from the community — the highest share in the field. Gabbard is not well known nor Indian American, but she has long been a favorite of Desi donors because of her devout Hinduism and staunchly proIndia foreign policy. She has practiced the religion since her teens and was the first Hindu elected to Congress. Gabbard is also aligned with controversial Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling, Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party. “I’ve known her for a long time,” said Bharat Barai, a Chicago-area oncologist who is a registered independent. “Putting apart religion, she has served her country well at a young age. She’s a leader from Hawaii, and she served twice in Iraq, so she’s a veteran. I think she has good social ideas on how to work for the people.” Barai said that if Gabbard is not the nominee, he could see supporting Biden or Harris. His three daughters favor California’s junior senator, but Barai noted that the former vice president has decades-long ties to the Indian community. Biden has made gaffes — notably telling an Indian American man in 2008 while talking about the community’s growth in Delaware: “You cannot go to
a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I’m not joking.” But that moment is largely overshadowed by his efforts to strengthen the U.S.-India relationship, including fighting as a senator for a nuclear deal. Biden, who joined the 2020 field in May, has raised more than $173,000 from Indian Americans, a number expected to rise after fundraisers last week in California, home to the largest number of Desis in the nation. One Bay Area donor, who asked for anonymity to speak candidly, said he donated to Harris’ earlier campaigns but is backing Biden. “The Indian community sees him as one of our leaders,” he said, recalling Biden and President Obama lighting oil lamps to celebrate Diwali, or the festival of lights, at the White House. “Kamala, on the contrary, has taken another direction. That’s her personal choice, only to highlight her African American heritage and not even show interest in her Indian heritage.” Booker has more than $248,000 from Indian American donors. New Jersey has a large population of Desis, and Booker has long maintained relationships with the community, showing up at festivals and backing Indian American candidates. “He’s very genuine. He talks about a unifying message,” said Sangeeta Doshi, a Booker donor and a Cherry Hill, N.J., councilwoman whom the senator endorsed. She recalled attending an Indian American PAC’s event in Washington for newly elected Desis and Booker being the only non-Indian speaker there. “He’s just very dynamic,” Doshi said. “Harris was an amazing speaker too but he’s our senator. I’ve had more interaction with him.” Harris supporters are confident that as the field winnows and if she continues to gain in polls, skeptical donors will coalesce behind her. “People are moving to her side now,” said Ashok Bhatt, cohost of a June luncheon for Harris in San Francisco. “I’m going to put on more events for her to let people know we have confidence in a woman who can hold power, hold the White House, for the first time.” It may take a little more flattery on Harris’ part. At her May fundraiser in Washington, which was closed to the media, a man asked her to take a pledge, according to video of the event provided by an attendee, who didn’t want to be named for fear of running afoul of the campaign. “When you become president, we want … your first foreign visit to go to India instead of Jamaica,” the audience member said. Harris laughed broadly but didn’t commit. By Seema Mehta, Maloy Moore Los Angeles Times

The Land of Ahimsa : Houstonian’s documentary on Veganism in the making
Dolly Vyas-Ahuja can never forget the evening of April 16, 2014. She had just returned from walking the dog and was surfing the net for a recipe when she heard “The Best Speech Ever” by Gary Yourofsky, a speech that was about the cruelty animals are subjected to in the process of becoming our food. Recalling the day, she says it hurt her “so deep down to her core” that she had a breakdown on the kitchen floor. She became a vegan overnight, “no longer willing to ingest anxiety, grief, and torture in her body.” This was just the beginning in Dolly’s journey to veganism. Determined to become a voice for animals, she began speaking at temples, global conferences and radio talk shows to create awareness about the cruelty of animal agriculture and the dairy industry, as well as its impact on animal rights, personal health and the environment. Just like her grandfather, a freedom fighter who marched alongside Gandhi to liberate India from British rule, she strove for animal freedom and liberation. Although she was born into a Gandhian family that be-

lieved in Ahimsa, she did not realize its true meaning until her awakening five years ago. Dolly found several receptive takers for her message of non-violence. She was invited by Mitha Jain, a vegan and the President of the Jain Society of Houston - Urvashi Jain to speak to the members of the temple. Several attendees showed an interest and after her talk, the temple stopped serving milk to the Sunday school children and began using plant-based milk for tea. Ghee was substituted with coconut oil for lighting diyas at the temple and Urvashi became into a vegan. Dolly, who is based in Houston, is currently working on “The Land of Ahimsa” a documentary that seeks to inspire and encourage India to adopt a vegan lifestyle. India is the land of Ahimsa, which means non-violence to all living beings. The mission of this documentary is to convince people to bring ahimsa back into their daily lives by
avoiding the use of dairy, honey, silk, eggs, leather and meat. The film touches Dolly’s transformation to veganism, the vegan movement in India and covers activists, plant-based doctors, sanctuaries, athletes and vegan businesses. Imagine, she says, if one-billion people led a compassionate, vegan lifestyle. The impact would reverberate through the entire world. The film is directed by award winning Bollywood director Aryeman Ramsey. Born in a vegetarian Gujarati family, Dolly says she got her first taste of meat in school. At 13, she visited her grandfather in Rajkot, who asked her what Ahimsa meant and if they ate meat. She now understands why he was asking her those questions. He was trying to teach her the true meaning of Ahimsa and choosing peace over violence. Gandhi once said, “The moral of a nation can be judged by the treatment of its animals.” Like Gandhi and her grandfather, Dolly has a dream that In-

COMMUNITY Sanjna Anand renders flawless debut recital
Guru Dr. Rathna Kumar presents a diploma to Sanjna Anand. Sanjna Anand, 15, gave a charismatic performance at her Bharatanatyam Arangetram (solo dance debut) on July 20. This performance was conducted by her guru Dr Rathna Kumar, the Founder-Director of Anjali Center for Performing Arts, where Sanjna has learned Bharatanatyam since age 5, first under the guidance of Shri Venugopal Josyula and then under the expertise of Guru
Dr. Rathna Kumar to integrate dance, music, theater and literature. The audience at Bayou Theater were treated to a spellbinding performance, a perfect confluence of grace, talent and a deep understanding of the traditional dance form. This was clearly a result of mentorship from a guru par excellence, whose creativity and artistic genius was visible throughout the
program. Sanjna’s songs and dances were carefully selected and choreographed by her Guru. Commencing with a joyous paean ‘Gaiye Ganapathi’ invoked Lord Ganesha, to remove all obstacles, and bless the world. Sanjna’s technique was impressively showcased as she treated her audience to the intricate footwork of the ‘Jatiswaram’. This purely rhythmic dance

perfectly showcased Sanjna’s command over her footwork and technique. In the longest dance, ‘Varnam’, Sanjna’s exquisite performance weaved together elaborate storytelling with complex rhythmic sequences. As a departure from tradition, Sanjna danced to a Gujarati composition by Narasinh Mehta on Narayan. The persuasive stories eloquently expressed to the audience that all their earthly sufferings would be relieved once they devoted themselves to Narayan. The 35-minute piece was executed with grace and depth of feeling, moving the audience to experience rasa (aesthetic flavor). ‘Jaya Durge,’ Sanjna’s mighty exhibition of Durga destroying the demon Mahishasura, was followed by a gentler note of ‘Hey Veena Vaadini’ as the recital sought the blessings of Saraswati. The energetic and joyous ‘Shankar Mahadev,’ paid tribute to the God of Dance, Nataraja, as he dances with joy atop Mount Kailash. As Sanjna brought her recital to a rousing close with a Tillana and Mangalam, everybody watched with growing wonder of her skill, maturity, stamina, and sheer immersion into the spirit of the dance. Under the guidance of her guru, Sanjna’s passion for dance has taken her to this level in her journey – a superbly orchestrated Bharatanatyam Arangetram that highlighted some of her strengths and learning strides as a performer. The striking aspects of Sanjna’s recital were her perfect posture, tremendous stamina, dynamic jumps, strong footwork, evocative facial ex-
pressions and a great stage presence. The performance was undeniably enhanced by a live orchestra: vocals by Balasubramanya Sharma, the rhythmic brilliance of N. K. Kesavan, and melodious flute by B. Muthukumar. While the Anands expressed their heartfelt thanks to family and friends that helped with making this event a success, Harshini Ganesh shared her experiences with guru Dr. Rathna Kumar. Amulya Peri, herself an excellent dancer, served as Mistress of Ceremonies; Venugopal Joysula, Assistant Director of the Anjali Center, did a wonderful job with supporting and encouraging Sanjna. Seetha Ratnakar and the Bayou Theater crew did the lighting and audio for this show. Sanjna’s brother, Krishna and cousin Ashita gave a glimpse into Sanjna as a person of grace and determination while her dance friends Sanjani and Veda shared Sanjna’s virtues as a dancer. The Arangetram would not have been complete without the hard work of Sanjna’s aunt, Kinny Kaul, who designed and executed the brochures, guest book, and stage décor. Altogether, a most charming recital was put together as Sanjna ascended the stage in her journey as a Bharatanatyam dancer. Gratitude is owed to her parents for bringing her this far along with congratulations to her as her journey continues forward as a rising junior at the Texas Academy of Math & Science in Denton, TX.

Meditation is 20 times more beneficial than pranayam nas, and meditation is 20 times more beneficial than pranayama. Swami Mukundananda Question: In one of your recent lectures you mentioned that pranayam is 20 times more beneficial than asanas and meditation is 20 times more beneficial than pranayam. Please illustrate since this sounds so incredible to most. Swamiji: The Yog Vasishtha describes a conversation between Lord Ram and Maharshi Vasishtha. Once Lord Ram toured his kingdom of Ayodhya, and found that some of his citizens were sick. He was moved to pity. On returning to his palace, he asked Guru Vasishtha, “What is the cause of vyadhi?” Guru Vasishtha replied, “Ram, vyadhi begins in the mind. When we harbor negative thoughts—of hatred, anxiety, fear, envy, desire, etc.— this disturbs the manomaya kosha. When the mental sheath is disturbed, it agitates the pranamaya kosha. When the vital energy sheath is agitated, it manifests in the annamaya kosha (gross body) as disease.” The Vedas explain that our body houses five sheaths, or koshas. These are progressively deeper aspects of our personality. They are annamaya kosha (physical sheath), pranamaya kosha (vital energy sheath), manomaya kosha (mental sheath), vigyanamaya kosha (intellectual sheath), and anandamaya kosha (bliss sheath). When we engage in meditation, we purify the mental sheath from poisonous thoughts. We thus strike at the source from where diseases sprout. Pranayam helps strengthen the vital energy sheath of the body. When it is healthy, it automatically heals the physical body. Thus, to give us a comparison of their relative importance, the Hatha Yoga Pradeepika states that pranayama is 20 times more important than asa-
tuality, holistic health, yoga, meditation, service to society and God-realization. He has been invited to speak at various Fortune 500 companies like Google, Oracle etc. For the youth, Swamiji has conducted programs at prestigious universities such as Stanford, Princeton, MIT, Kellogg and Duke University.

Puppet show in aid of VHPA’s “Support a Child “ project
By MANU SHAH In a technology driven world, it’s a rare treat to see a form of storytelling that goes back 5000 years ago and still retains its charm and appeal. “Malvikaagnimitram” a musical comedy by Dhaatu Puppet Theater is one such show that not only captivates the viewer with its brilliant production and old world vibe but is also reviving the dying art of puppetry. Dhaatu is currently performing in 21 cities in the US to raise funds for Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America’s initiative “Support a Child” (SAC). Houston played host to internationally famed Bengaluru based puppeteer Anupama Hoskere and her crew of artists on July 19th at the Shri Radha Krishna Temple. The show was attended by over 250 people and received a standing ovation. Houston coordinator Girish Naik with Emcee Geetha Ravula did the honors of introducing the artists and encouraging the audience to open their hearts and donate to the cause. Hoskere, a trained classical dancer, brings Mahakavi Kalidasa’s story of King Agnimitra and Malvika to life through the medium of puppets. The skillful manipulation of strings, the unique combination of beauti-
fully decorated puppets with a live Bharatnatyam dancer who is par excellence, vibrant costumes and an English narration with its touches of dry humor makes the 70 minute presentation a must-see, particularly for the next generation. Hoskere, who has a Masters in Engineering, carves and designs the puppets herself and has designed 575 puppets to date. Incidentally, she received the news that she has been conferred with the State Sangeet Natak Academy Award while on her 21- city tour of the US. The performances are part of a fundraiser effort for SAC, a Seva program of VHPA. Established in 1985 to eradicate illiteracy, SAC believes that only education can transform the life of a child and a country, break generational poverty and open the doors of opportunity when socio-economic reasons often rob them of that choice. A visit to one of SAC’s hostels, before coming to the US, was an eye opener for Hoskere. She was not only impressed at the way the children were being educated and trained in vocational skills but was struck by how “clean the place was.” Raising funds for SAC, she realized, was an opportunity for her to do “seva.” The driving force behind the project is Vice President -Seva,
VHPA Renu Gupta. The project supports 2500 children who are housed in 30 plus hostels in 15 States. The children come from socially and economically backward areas affected by Naxalites or other separatist groups or are orphans, runaways or children of sex workers. Renu Gupta and her husband Arun Gupta, who is equally involved, make it a point to visit one hostel each time they visit India. The hostels not only educate the children till the 12th grade in Central Board Certified
Schools but also teach yoga, music, arts, sports, and values that build character. Children are encouraged to go to college and have become engineers, doctors and professionals. Kalpana Raout, the Commonwealth Olympic medalist is a SAC product. Likewise Sejal Nayar won a gold medal in the Special Olympics. What’s heartening is that many children move back to their villages to uplift their communities. Apart from providing a safe haven and an education, SAC also provides skills such as tailoring, computers, mechanics, auto repair and commercial driving. SAC’s annual fundraisers such as this one help the organization support 2500 chil-

dren but this year the goal has jumped to 2900 children. A donation of just $250 dollars a year can give a child a new life. Donors who sponsor a child receive a child’s picture, a short biography, an academic report card and are encouraged to keep in touch with the child and visit the hostel. Administration costs are a bare 9%. Dhaatu has already performed in 8 cities starting from July 13th. Future performances are scheduled in Cincinnati, Detroit, Cleveland, Louisville, Pittsburg, Columbus, Allentown, Hartford, Staten Island, Somerset, Boston and Atlanta. Subbarao, at 70 still dancing strong

Indian Americans fight hunger across Metro Atlanta
ATLANTA, GA
Indian Americans across Atlanta are coming together to fight hunger with the Atlanta Community Food Bank. The Atlanta Chapter of the Indian American Council (IAC) will conduct its first ever fundfor-food drive from August 1-31, 2019, to provide meals to Georgians in need as part of the national Hunger Mitao Campaign. With a rallying cry of “Hunger Mitao!” which means Wipe Out Hunger, the Indian American Council was originally founded in September 2017 out of the North Texas Food Bank in Dallas, Texas. In just seven subsequent months, the IAC surpassed its goal of funding one million meals for hungry North Texans. Now with chapters in Houston and New York City, and a collective 6 million meals later, Anna and Raj Asava, philanthropists and co-founders of the IAC, are mobilizing the Indian
Datta Subbarao is a talented Bharatanatyam dancer who obtained his training from Kalakshetram, Chennai, India. What’s striking is that he learnt dancing at a young age but discontinued the practice for almost 35 years before taking it up again. Although he is about 70 years old, he feels young at heart and continues to dance at this age - a lesson to all of us and a motivating factor to the younger generation, society and community. He has given performances in countries such as Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, France and the US. He has participated in Navika and Akka - world renowned Kannada associations in the US. Even more admirable is that Datta Subbarao has developed his own style of Bharatanatyam dancing to suit his age which is very unique to stage performances. He recently performed at India House on 26th Jan’ 2019 on Republic day, Kannada Vrinda, Houston and at the Indian Association in Los Angeles, California. Since age is not a criteria for him, he plans to continue dancing till he is fit enough to give performances. An engineer by profession, Datta Subbarao worked as Director of Mechanical Engineer with TechnipFMC, Houston. He is a member of many Cultural centers in and around USA such as the Kannada Vrinda, Akka, Navika and the Houston Seniors Association and India House in Houston among others. Datta Subbarao is not only a great artist but has also contributed greatly to the community with his involvement in temple and theological activities He is also one of the pioneer members of the ‘Bhagvatgeetha Recitation” group of Houston.

community around the issue of hunger right here in metro Atlanta and north Georgia. “In the spirit of ‘give where you live,’ the Indian American community, led by IAC, has enabled over 4 million meals in North Texas alone in under two years,” said Raj. “We are excited to bring this movement to Georgia and are confident that the Indian community here will galvanize around the Atlanta Community Food Bank and help enable millions of meals for metro Atlanta’s food insecure children, seniors, veterans and vulnerable families,” added Anna. Hunger Mitao is a signature campaign of the Indian American Council and is observed during August, the month of India’s Independence Day. The vision is to showcase the unity, philanthropy and spirit of the Indian American community through conducting fund for food drives all over the region served by the Atlanta Community Food Bank.
“The Asavas have a deep passion and dedication to raising awareness on the critical issue of hunger. We are excited to partner with them to launch the Indian American Council here in Atlanta, where we’re certain their peers will jump to action, along with the other 600 partner agencies that we currently work with.” said Kyle Waide, President and CEO of the Atlanta Community Food Bank. The Atlanta Community Food Bank will host the launch of the Indian American Council (IAC) on October 2, 2019 — the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Drones to destroy terror-staple ganja farming
In a unique move to hit more on drug-terror nexus, the Centre has decided to identify ganja (cannabis) growing areas through satellites and deploy drones to carry out spraying of chemical to destroy the crops. In a communiqué to Director General of Police of all States and Union Territories, Central Paramilitary Forces and Narcotic Control Bureau, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) directed to identify cannabis growing areas through satellites and destroy the crops through chemical spraying by using drones. The Ministry has also directed to find out the root of the supply chain in drugs and identify the drug-terror nexus. As per reports, Kerala, Meghalaya, Andhra Pradesh, Manipur, Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Mysuru, and even Bihar are known for illegal cannabis farming. The issue of increasing cannabis farming in several States was discussed at the highestlevel meeting with States police chiefs recently. It is estimated that one acre of cannabis fetches Rs 2 to 2.50 lakh in the market. As per data, 9,500 acres of cannabis crop was destroyed across the country during 2017-18. The crop season commences around September and it is harvested around February or March. Recently, the Delhi Police has seized 1,300 kg cannabis since June this year. The security agencies also seized 111.91 kg and
worth Rs 100 crore from Manipur on June 29. According to intelligence sources, the Afghan variety of drug is being pumped into Kashmir via Pakistan, which is further pushed into Punjab via Jammu. Punjab, which shares a 553-km-long border with Pakistan, has been hit hard by the menace of drugs smuggled from Pakistan and Afghanistan. Army intelligence sources are also said to have established strong links between Kashmiri terrorists and drug trafficking in Punjab. A 2019 study conducted by the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences reported that about 7.2 million Indians had consumed cannabis within the past year. Last week Chief Ministers of seven States, including Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttrakhand, besides senior officials representing Jammu & Kashmir, Delhi and Chandigarh met to draw out a joint action plan to combat the rapidly growing crisis of drug abuse in the region. According to sources, Delhi is one of the main epicenters where drugs flow from all States and supplied to other parts of the country. Drugs smuggled into Punjab from J&K, Rajasthan besides across the border from Pakistan are making way to Delhi and beyond. Habit-forming drugs are making way to Jammu from Punjab. While cannabis from Himachal has a market in Punjab, most infamous drug “chit-
ta” is now smuggled to Himachal villages along the Punjab border. According to Narcotic Control Bureau report 2018, seizure of narcotic drugs like opium, heroin and cannabis in the country has increased by more than 300 per cent in the last five years with 2017 witnessing an all-time high recovery of over 3.6 lakh kg of narcotics. Intelligence Agencies report said Kashmiri farmers, especially in South Kashmir, are being forced into cultivating poppy to generate funds to finance street and terrorist
violence. While the focus of the national media has largely been on drug abuse among the youth in Punjab, the scenario in J&K is no less frightening. The Paris-based Geopolitical Drug Watch has labelled Pakistan as a ‘narco state’, a nation in which drug barons collaborate closely with politicians, senior bureaucrats and armed forces officers. This illegal and clandestine business pumps more than $2 billion annually into Pakistan’s sinking economy. The economy of Pakistan-Afghan frontier is dependent on the production
of poppy and cannabis. The drug money is being floated in an unorganised but systematic manner into the Indian money market thereby damaging financial institutions. According to the United Nations Drug Control Programme (UNDCP) report, there are about 70,000 substance abusers present in the Valley, out of which 31 per cent are women. According to addiction data published by the Government Psychiatric Hospital, Srinagar, around 90 per cent drug abusers belong to the age group of 17-35.

In a tweet put in the morning, the Chief Minister’s Office stated: “Maharashtra CM @Dev_Fadnavis appeals the citizens stranded in #MahalaxmiExpress to not worry & has ensured that all measures & rescue operations are taken care of roping in all expert teams from NDRF, Army, Navy, Local administration, Police, Railway Ministry”. Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai called up Fadnavis and offered all help from the Centre for the train passengers. Later in the day, a satisfied Chief Minister tweeted: “Happy to inform that all the passengers stranded in #MahalaxmiExpress have been evacuated safely. Congratulations & Thank you to @ NDRFHQ, Army, @indiannavy,
Airforce, Police, Indian Railways, Local administration and entire team for this coordinated & great efforts!” Detailing the role played by the Central Railway in the operation, its spokesperson said: “The Central Railway had an escort party in the train that pacified passengers and teams of the local city police and the RPF reached the compartments to distribute food and biscuits. They also assured the passengers and told them not to get down from the train” “The Central Railway then alerted the Disaster Control of the Maharashtra Government that took a decision to air-lift stranded passengers. By 11 hrs, one coach had been evacuated by the Thane Disaster Management Cell,” the spokesperson added.

1,050 passengers, including nine pregnant women, rescued from Mahalaxmi Express stranded in floodwaters after 17 hours. In a massive joint operation, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Navy, Army and Air Force, on Saturday rescued amid heavy rain as many as 1,050 marooned passengers — including nine pregnant women — from the Mumbai-Kolhapur Mahalaxmi Express which remained stranded in heavy floodwaters for more than 17 hours near Vangani, 69 km away from Mumbai. The authorities used three helicopters — two Seaking of Navy, one Mi-17 of Air Force — and several inflatable boats for the first-ofits-kind rescue operation that lasted for nearly eight hours. Beginning its journey amid pouring rain, the Kolhapur-bound Mahalaxmi Express — which had left Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus at 8.20am on Friday — got stuck at Chimtoli village near Vangani station. “What made matters difficult was the Ulhas river flowing in the vicinity was in spate. With tracks under knee-deep water, the train could not proceed further. The passengers on board were safe, but the raising water levels on tracks became a cause for concern,” a senior Thane district official said. “The train had proceeded on its way as water had begun receding, but after a sudden spell of intense rainfall, coupled with overflowing of the Ulhas river, the train was completely stuck in deep water at Vangani,” a Central Railway spokesperson said. A majority of the passengers on board the Mahalaxmi Express were blissfully unaware of their train having been stranded near Vangani railway station till Saturday morning. Some of the passengers who were awake when the train came to a grinding halt at Vangani had stories to narrate. “We were stranded. We did not know where we were. We were helpless. Meanwhile, we were further scared when a snake also sneaked into our compart-
ment,” said an aggrieved passengers Asha Barode. “We ran out of drinking water on the train,” said another passenger Dilip More. Around early morning, some of the passengers tried to reach out several rescue agencies, including the Railway police. The rescue operation began in the morning. The Navy mobilised nine flood rescue teams, including five diving teams with rescue material, inflatable boats and life jackets. It launched a Seaking Helicopter with divers and auto inflatable craft for deployment in the area as advance assessment party. Despite the heavy rain, the rescue teams managed to reach the spot and immediately rendered assistance to the stranded passengers. The Seaking helicopter and IAF MI-17 helicopter provided aerial surveillance and supported the ground rescue teams in the rescue efforts. “Along with the NDRF and State Government teams, the Navy teams successfully evacuated all the passengers to safety by the afternoon. The Western Naval Command was in constant touch with State Administration and continues to remain prepared to respond as required to provide necessary assistance,” a Navy spokesperson said. Personnel from various agencies, including the NDRF, Navy and local volunteers, brought down the passengers from the stranded train and carried them and their luggage in inflatable rubber boats to a nearby village where they served drinking water, hot tea and biscuits. Later, the rescued passengers boarded buses, tempos and smaller vehicles to go to Badlapur, 7 km away. The Central Railway then took by a local train to Kalyan where a 19-coach special train was kept ready to take them to the temple town of Kolhapur. The rescued passengers included nine pregnant women - one of whom went into labour pains during the stranded period -- several
senior citizens, infants and kids and some physically-challenged persons. As many as 37 doctors including gynaecologists were part of the rescue teams. Meanwhile, the stranded ninemonth old pregnant woman, Reshma T Kamble, who went into labour pains, was also shifted to the Shushrut Hospital in Badlapur

Jeevan Tarang: Doctors dance for a cause, Support Cry America
At a recent charity show at the Maguire Theater, SUNY Old Westbury, doctors exchanged their hospital scrubs for ornate Indian costumes and jewelry, and danced all evening in a production by The Mudra Foundation, a nonprofit that uses arts for a cause. The show titled ‘Jeevan Tarang: Rhythms of Life’ was a roaring success, both for the art loving audience as well as for the cause - CRY America. “We dug deep to discover this treasure trove of talent among the medical community”, said Dr. Arti Datta, Director of the Foundation, “and it sure was worth it! These are not mere hobbyists but accomplished artistes with solid classical training who had put aside their performing talents in their pursuit of medicine.” Cardiologists, radiologists, surgeons, pediatricians, physiotherapists, hematologists and anesthesiologists showcased their talents. Performing alongside young student artists
of the non-profit, the doctors presented a series of intricately choreographed classical and semi classical pieces. While the student artists of Mudra were expectedly impressive, the doctors mesmerized the audience with their talent. “I was afraid I might be a little rusty,” said Dr. Pinaki Dutta, Director of Radiation Oncology, Mt. Sinai West hospital, who performed an Odissi item, “but I was thrilled to dance for a cause”. The show was emceed by thoracic surgeon, Dr. Shahriyour Andaz and psychiatrist, Dr. Jovita Crasta. The event ended with a flourish, with alumni students taking the stage and wrapping the evening with an energetic finale. The Mudra Foundation has done several shows to help a variety of causes including the Guide Dog Foundation and the Sankara Eye Foundation, as well as raising funds for natural disaster relief operations

Odisha Rasgola wins the naming war
The rasagola, a popular dessert of Odisha, has received the geographical indication tag from the Registrar of Geographical Indication after years of controversy around the sweet. The registration was conferred to ‘Odisha Rasagola’ under Section 16(I) or of authorized Section 17(3)(c) of Geographical Indication of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act 1999 on Monday. The GI number 612 has been registered in favour of the Odisha Small Industries Corporation Limited (OSIC Limited), a government of Odisha undertaking and Utkal Mistanna Byabasayee Samiti, a traders’ organisation, in the foodstuff category. “Happy to share that #Odisha Rasagola has received GI Tag in Geographical Indication Registry. This mouthwatering culinary delight made of cottage cheese, loved by Odias across the world, is offered to Lord Jagannath as part of bhog since centuries,” tweeted Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. According to the application submitted to the Registrar of GI, ‘Odisha Rasagola’ is a sweet from the state of Odisha made of chhena (cottage cheese) cooked in sugar syrup, which is very soft to feel, is juicy and non- chewy in consistency and can be swallowed without teeth pressure. Colour development of the ‘Odisha Rasagola’ is very specific, where without addition of external colour, various intensely-coloured rasagolas are prepared using the principle of caramelisation of sugar with specific methods of preparation, the application said. The application further says Odisha Rasagolas are white in colour with round shape (non‐ spherical) but off white rasagolas in various shades are plentily prepared by cooking the rasagola at 110 degree Celsius for about 40 minutes in which caramalisation of sugar takes place giving the off white colour. The area of production of Odisha Rasagola has been shown all 30 districts. Both Odisha and West Bengal have been contesting the origin of the rasagola. Historical records submitted say the ‘Odisha Rasagola’ is associated with world famous Puri Jagannath Temple. “As per Record of Rights, this is the duty of Bhitarachha Sebaka. It is mentioned in Bhitarachha Sebara Niyama and published in Record of Rights, Part‐III, The Orissa Gazette, Extra‐ordinary, Law Department Notification Dated 12 October, 1955. The reference of rasagola is found in the late 15th-century Odia Ramayana written by Balaram Das. Balaram Das’s Ramayana is known as Dandi Ramayana or Jagamohana Ramayana as it was composed and sung at the Jagamohana of the Puri Temple,” it saidys. In its ‘Ajodhya Kanda’, another religious script, one comes across elaborate descriptions of chhena and chhena‐based products including Rasagola. Famous Odia writer Fakir Mohan Senapati, famous writer of Odisha, in his writing Utkal Bhramanam published by Utkal Deepika on August 27, 1892 mentioned about the plentiful use of rasagola in Odisha during those days. Similarly, on December 14, 1893, a poem titled, ‘Bali Jatra’ was published in the weekly “Indradhanu” written by poet Damodar Pattanayak. The poem was an eye‐witness of Cuttack’s famous, historic fair, Bali Jatra (Journey to Bali Island of Indonesia) and mentioned that sweets shops were looking attractive in presence of Rasagola and other sweets.
A foot soldier to the cause of reading
Umadevi Antharjanam delivers library books to readers’ doorsteps on foot She is fond of books, enjoys long walks, and wants to inculcate the habit of reading among the younger generation. At a time many wish to see through their retirement in relative comfort, Umadevi Antharjanam, 73, hailing from Budhanoor, near Chengannur, is finding delight in delivering books from the village library to the readers at their doorstep that too on foot. A ‘field librarian’ with the Kalaposhini Library, Budhanoor, for the last 13 years, Umadevi delivers books, including short stories, novels, children’s fiction, magazines and so on, to around 200 members, mostly children and women. She says age-related ailments are taking a toll on her but she wanted to encourage reading among the villagers. “Reading can make a person a better human being. By regularly distributing books to children at their homes, they will be able to read more books ,” Umadevi says. As the majority of the members she serve are students, the avid book lover uses Saturdays and Sundays to reach out to them. On these days, she fills her bag with books and walks hard from morning till evening knocking on doors. She is also a solace to senior citizens and mobility impaired. According to Umadevi, working as a field librarian has helped her overcome difficulties following the death of her husband more than a decade ago. “I was a tuition teacher once. After the death of my husband, I struggled to make ends meet. When the job was offered by the Budhanoor panchayat president, I accepted it wholeheartedly,” she says. Gopi Budhanoor, president of the library, said Umdevi’s love for books had kept her running. “She loves books and want others to cultivate the habit of reading. Even at 73, she is sincere in her work,” he added. Honoured Recently, she was honoured by various organisations in the region for her efforts in promoting reading. The library lost a large number of books and records in last year’s floods and is engaged in a rebuilding process.

NEWS By A. SURYAPRAKASH The ugly political drama in Karnataka has finally ended with the defeat of the HD Kumaraswamy Government on the floor of the State Assembly and the appointment of a new Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government headed by BS Yediyurappa. But the story is not over yet because of the Constitutional issues that have sprung up vis-a-vis the decision of the Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly, KR Ramesh Kumar, to disqualify 17 MLAs, who had earlier sent in their resignations. The MLAs wanted their resignations to be accepted and 10 of them even appeared before the Speaker to assert their right to resign from the House. The Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) wanted them disqualified because they did not turn up when the HD Kumaraswamy Government faced a trust vote in the Assembly. The Speaker has also barred these MLAs from contesting elections afresh during the life of the present Assembly. This will now completely upset the plans of these MLAs and the new Chief Minister, who had planned to give them BJP tickets in the by-elections. The matter is already before the Supreme Court and it is likely that these MLAs will challenge the Speaker’s decision to disqualify them. Whatever the eventual outcome, there can be little doubt that this has done considerable damage to the demo-

Political crisis in Karnataka cratic traditions in the country. The drama began with the Congress and Janata Dal(S) rebels going to the office of the Speaker and submitting their resignations. As the resignations were tendered in his absence, the Speaker insisted that the MLAs present themselves before him because he was duty-bound to ascertain whether they were under any duress or if they were resigning from the Assembly on their own volition. Rules of the Assembly state that when the resignation letter is handed over personally and the MLA says his action is “voluntary and genuine” (and if the Speaker is satisfied), he has to accept the resignation “immediately.” If the letter of resignation is not handed over personally, the rules give the Speaker scope to begin an inquiry on whether the resignation is voluntary and genuine. He also has the right to reject such a letter. Ten MLAs met the Speaker after the apex court directed them to do so. They complied with the directive and informed the Speaker in person that they wished to resign from their seats. Days later, when the Kumaraswamy Government had to face a trust vote, the two parties in the ruling coalition issued whips, directing their members to be present in the State Assembly and to vote for the trust motion. The rebel MLAs, having tendered their resignations, stayed back in Mumbai. Given this chronology of events and
the rules regarding the resignation of MLAs, the Speaker ought to have accepted the resignations. Since the resignations were tendered before the trust vote was taken up by the House, the rebels contended that the whips issued by the two parties were infructuous. There was something repulsive about the fortnight long drama in the State with the leaders of the Congress and the JD(S) trying every trick to win back the dissidents. A police complaint was lodged alleging wrongful confinement of MLAs in Mumbai. On one occasion, DK Shivakumar, an influential leader of the Congress in the State and a senior Minister in the Kumaraswamy Government, who tried to enter the hotel, was “escorted out” of the hotel after the rebel legislators wrote to the Mumbai police and sought “protection” from the visiting politicians from Karnataka. The conduct of the Karnataka Speaker is in contrast to the approach of Venkaiah Naidu, the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, in regard to resignations. Naidu received a letter of resignation from Neeraj Shekhar, a member of the House belonging to the Samajwadi Party, on July 15. The following day, he informed the Rajya Sabha that he had accepted Shekhar’s resignation. The Chairman called the member and asked him if his resignation letter was genuine and whether he had taken the decision voluntarily. He
also asked him if he would like to reconsider his decision. When the member insisted on resigning from the House, the Chairman accepted the same “with immediate effect” and asked his secretariat to complete the formalities. He also made a formal announcement about the MP’s resignation on July 16 in the House. Coming back to the drama in the Karnataka Assembly, it is indeed unfortunate that the people of the State failed to give a clear mandate to one political party or a pre-poll coalition in the last Assembly election in 2018. The final verdict left the BJP high and dry with 104 seats and the State ended up having a Chief Minister from the third largest party — the JD(S) — which had 37 seats and which had the support of the Congress, the second largest party with 78 seats. In the Assembly election held in 2008, the electorate gave the BJP 110 seats in the 224-member House. Yediyurappa had to entice some Independents and form the Government, which survived precariously for some time. But this was neither here nor there, and there were no easy solutions to the problem. Following the Constitution 91 Amendment Act, it has become difficult for poachers to get MLAs to cross the floor. Therefore, if a party falls short of a majority by a few seats, the only option available for the ruling party is to entice Opposition legislators to vacate their
seats and contest the elections afresh on the ruling party’s ticket. This is what Yediyurappa did in 2008 and succeeded in bolstering his numbers in the State legislature. It also speaks of the maturity of the electorate that some constituencies, which had never voted the BJP before, elected candidates put up by this party and, thus, voted to provide stability to the Government. This entire operation was codenamed “Operation Kamala” and came in for a lot of criticism. But this writer is of the view that a few MLAs going back to the people for a fresh mandate on another party’s ticket is far better than dissolution of the House and fresh Assembly election. This is also a much better option than the shameless defection of MPs and MLAs from one party to another, which was the case until the anti-defection law came into being. Yediyurappa was hoping to undertake a similar exercise this time, too, and get the defecting MLAs to contest afresh on a BJP ticket. This is stymied by the Speaker’s order. We will now have to await a judicial decision. Until then, a fresh round of instability is on the cards and the people will watch helplessly as another Government will hobble along.

STORY OF MAHATMA GANDHI The beginning of Gandhi’s Spartan life-style In 1906, an ordinance by the Transvaal government required all Indians — men women and children — to register themselves and obtain a personal certificate bearing their name and thumb impression. The Indians decided not to submit to this humiliating and insulting measure. They resolved to fight it. Gandhi saw here the need for passive resistance or satyagraha. He explained to the people his concept of satyagraha. First, he said, they must be prepared to observe absolute nonviolence. The authorities would take all measures to put down the agitation. They might use violence, arrest people and send them to jail, but all this must be faced without resistance “Merely disobeying the government’s laws will not be enough,” Gandhi told them. “You must have no hatred in your hearts and you must cast away all fear.” Now read on. The Government ignored all Indian protests against the ordinance and it came into force. The Indians decided to disobey the provisions of the ‘Black Act.’ Hundreds of Indians were arrested, tried, and jailed. They all pleaded guilty and went to jail without putting up any defence. Gandhi too was imprisoned. Then one day he was taken out of prison and sent to Pretoria to see General Smuts. “This movement you have started,” Smuts said, “must stop at once. It is not in me to dislike Indians, but they must obey the law.” “I would rather die than submit to this law,” Gandhi replied. “It is meant to humiliate the Indians.” After some argument, however, they reached a compromise. Gandhi promised to end the satyagraha if the act was repealed and the prisoners released. Smuts agreed to do this provided the Indians would register of their own accord. On this agreement, they parted. Back in Johannesburg, Gandhi called a meeting of the Indians. “We must now register voluntarily to show that we do not intend to bring a single Indian to the Transvaal by fraud,” he said. “If we show our goodwill by prompt registration, General Smuts will see to it that the “Black Act” is repealed.” Most of the Indians agreed with Gandhi, but a Pathan named Mir Alam shouted at him: “It was you who told us that fingerprints were required only from criminals. It was you who said we must disobey the “Black Act.” How does all that fit into your attitude today?” Early the next morning Gandhi, with his fellow satyagrahis, set out for the registration office. But on the way Mir Alam attacked him with a heavy stick. Gandhi fell down unconscious. Mir Alam and his associates went on beating him until he was rescued by some friends. When Gandhi recovered consciousness, he found himself on a couch in the house of an

Englishman whom he hardly knew. Struggling to sit up, Gandhi said in a weak voice, “Do not blame Mir Alam, for he did not understand.” Then he insisted that a clerk from the registration office should come to take his thumb impression and make out his certificate. In this way Gandhi was duly registered. Many Indians followed Gandhi by registering voluntarily. But General Smuts did not repeal the “Black Act.” The Indians, disappointed at the Government’s attitude, demanded a return of their applications for voluntary registration. The Transvaal government did not budge. Gandhi, who had by then recovered from his injuries, gave an ultimatum: If the Black Act is not repealed before a fixed date, the certificates collected by the Indians will be burnt. When he found that the Government ignored this threat, Gandhi started another satyagraha movement. A big bonfire was lit and more than two thousand certificates were burnt. Many Indians openly crossed the border into the Transvaal, where their presence was illegal. Gandhi and many of his compatriots were imprisoned several times in the course of the agitation. When Gandhi came out of jail for the third time, the Indians held a meeting and decided to send a deputation to England to acquaint the British Government with the real situation in South Africa. Gandhi and Seth Haji Habib were asked to go to London and present the grievances of the Indians. Accordingly they went, but the mission failed. They returned with grim determination to fight to the bitter end. Gandhi then made a big decision. He gave up his practice as a lawyer. He felt he could not go on earning his living by law when he
was defying it. Hermann Kallenbach, a white farmer, was so impressed with the peaceful way of life at Phoenix that he offered Gandhi his own big farm near Johannesburg to start another colony. He suggested that all those who had lost their jobs and homes by their participation in the satyagraha could settle there. The new colony was established in 1910 and named “Tolstoy Farm” after the great Russian writer whom Gandhi much admired. Here people who were different in nationality, religion, and color lived together like one family. They worked hard and shared the fruits of their labor. Gandhi spent much of his time at Tolstoy Farm. He was engaged in teaching the children and in other constructive activities. Gandhi’s efforts to persuade General Smuts to change the attitude of the Government towards the Indians had failed. Meanwhile, the struggle continued against the Black Act and the poll-tax. And now hundreds of Indian women, including Kasturbai, joined the movement. There had been a recent court decision in South Africa holding that Indian marriages were not recognized by law. The women could not brook this attack on family ties. They openly broke the law and were imprisoned in large numbers. In the coal mines at Newcastle, in Natal, Indian workers went on strike protesting against the repression. The arrests, the deportation of passive resisters, and the untold sufferings of Indian families angered the people of India. A large amount of money was collected for the relief of the victims. Many satyagrahis were beaten and flogged, and some were even killed. Gandhi, who felt intensely the humiliation his people suffered, took a triple vow of self-suffering. He decided to dress like a poor laborer, to walk barefoot, and to have only one meal a day, till the poll-tax and other injustices were abolished. Gandhi found the Government relentless. There was no solution in sight. He had to take further measures. — To be continued
