Kashmir row outside Indian Consulate in Houston

Pro-India and anti-India protesters demonstrated outside the Indian Consulate in Houston on Aug. 10 over the Kashmir issue.

By SESHADRI KUMAR Hundreds of protesters, supporting and opposing the abrogation of special powers conferred on Jammu & Kashmir by the Indian Parliament, demonstrated for over three hours in front of the Indian Consulate in Houston Friday afternoon.

flags stood on the Consulate side and staged a counter protest to the well-publicized anti-India protest announced previously by various Muslim religious groups, primarily Pakistani Muslim groups, led by the Islamic Society of Greater Houston.

The slogan shouting sometimes turned humorous as the anti-India side was led by the slogan “India, India,” and the Indian side quickly responded ‘Zindabad, Zindabad (Long live India))’ before the other side could chant ‘murdabad, murdabad (death to India).’

As the Indian side, amidst

a sea of Indian National flags fluttering silently, made its imposing presence, the other side sought to dominate the scene with its high-power sound system in peak volume.

Notably, the protesters, mostly of Pakistani origin, did not display any placards carrying the name of Pakistan or Pakistani flag. They claimed to be “Friends of Kashmir” and

shouted slogans against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demanded “freedom for Kashmir.”

The event, with the tagline ‘Shared Dreams, Bright Futures’, will shine light on the tremendous contribution of Indo-Americans in the United States and the strong and lasting partnership between the United States and India. The cultural program preceding the Prime Minister’s address, showcasing Indian-American artists from Texas and elsewhere, will portray how the community is woven into the larger tapestry of American life. It will involve broad-based community participation across the United States.

The Prime Minister’s address is a reflection of the growing economic ties between India and Houston. According to WISERTrade, the U.S. Census Bureau, and the Foreign Trade Division, in 2019 (year to date), India is Houston’s 4th largest trading partner just behind Brazil, China and Mexico. Also this year, Houston-India trade is up 82.2 percent, Houston exports to India are up 106.5 percent, and India exports

to Houston up 48.8 percent. Additionally, the HoustonGalveston Customs District is the third busiest gateway for U.S.-India trade (by value). From ’09 to ’18, trade between Houston and India averaged $4.8 billion annually and was valued at $7.2 billion in ’18.

More than 92,900 people living in metro Houston were born in India. Thirty-three Houston firms operate 85 subsidiary locations in India, including KBR, National Oilwell Varco, NetIQ/Micro Focus, Oceaneering International and Walter P Moore. Twentyeight Indian firms operate 28 subsidiaries in the Houston area, including HCL America, JSW Steel, Mahindra USA, Neilsoft and Welspun Global Trade. Trade and cultural relationships with India are facilitated in Houston through the Consulate General of India, and the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce.

He sought to disassociate Pakistan from the protest by pointing out that there was no display of Pakistani flags and he himself was the president of the local chapter of Imran Khan’s political party.

Burki said India reneged on its contract with the people of Kashmir made in 1947 and the people of Kashmir should be allowed a plebiscite to exercise their wish either to remain independent or join any other country.

Indian Americans, under the aegis of Houston chapter of Friends of India Society International, celebrated the abrogation of Article 370, 35-A and bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir State into Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, thus integrating the State with the Union of India.

This celebration was organized to counter the demonstration by the Islamic Society of Greater Houston which showed solidarity with Pakistan, said Achalesh Amar, Houston area

Indian-American activist, and National Treasurer of Friends of India Society International.

The Indian side carried banners like “Terrorist State Pakistan“, “Pakistan – stop manufacturing terrorists” and “ Pakistan, let us live in peace“.

At one point during the demonstration, India’s ConsulGeneral in Houston, Dr. Anupam Ray, came down, mingled with the Indian demonstrators and shook hands with them.

As the protest entered its second hour and the crowd was increasing, Houston Police officers on the scene brought barricades and placed them on the sidewalk, on both sides of the street.

Amar said the draconian provision of Art. 370 became an instrument of genocide and ethnic cleansing of Kashmiri Hindus from the Kashmir valley.

For the last thirty years, Kashmiri Hindus have been living as refuges in their own country India. Friends of India Society International commended the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and considered this as a land mark decision which will uplift all sections of communities in the state.

Article 370 in the Constitution of India has been revoked by a constitutional process.

Abrogation of Article 370, 35 A and declaring Jammu and Kashmir as a Union territory with its legislature and Ladakh as a separate UT will provide equal and much greater opportunities to all the residents of the erstwhile state without any discrimination on the basis of cast, creed, ethnicity and religion.

The only agenda left is to regain the occupied part of Kashmir which is under the illegal occupation of Pakistan, Adi said.

Surinder Kaul, International Coordinator of Global Kashmiri Pandit Diaspora said the decision by the Indian Prime Minister should not be seen

through the prism of religion.

India has the second largest Muslim population in the world and enjoy all the guarantees enshrined under the Constitution of India.

The common residents of the State will have access to better education, better health care, profound development, better employment which will increase the happiness index of the residents which they have been deprived of due to constitutional barriers and rampant corruption with no accountability and no transparency.

Incidentally, Indian Muslim groups in Houston did not participate in the protest demonstration.

“Imagine if the Constitution of Texas did not allow residents of any other state explained one local Kashmiri activist. “This was the ludicrous situation in the state of Jammu and Kashmir until now,” said a Kashmiri Pandit living in Houston.

The Indo-American Kashmir Forum, working with Hindu American Foundation to advocate for the rights of the minority population of Kashmiri Hindus (Pandits) who have been under forced exile from their homeland, expressed hope that the human rights situation that has prevented normalcy from returning to the state of Jammu & Kashmir can finally start improving.

“By creating a special situ-

ation for Kashmiris such that they were never fully integrated into India, corruption and special interests of the leaders of Kashmir has been the result, leading to the poor economic conditions existing in the state.”

The only people to lose from this decision are those special interests and corrupt political, community, and religious leaders whose only aim has been to hold onto power over their constituencies.

This change is an extremely welcome development for a number of reasons. First and foremost, the status quo in the State, under the Article 370 dispensation, had failed utterly in bringing peace, security, development and human rights to its people, especially religious minorities in the Kashmir valley.

Second, the State had fallen into a rut of dynastic rule led by a few prominent Muslim families that had looted the State of its wealth, leading the NGO Transparency International (TI) to label the State as the most corrupt in India.”

In the 1990s, the Kashmiri Hindu minority known as Pandits, who are the original inhabitants of Kashmir for thousands of years, were brutally ethnically cleansed from Kashmir

Understanding India and her problems Modi comes from a family of grocers in Vadnagar, Gujarat where he lived like one of the many common people of India working tirelessly with his family to make ends meet. He helped his father on the family tea stall and also ran one of his own later.

He chose to travel across the span of India as a 19-year-old and visited various institutions across the country to build an immense understanding of the culture, values, needs and aspirations of the people of India.

His understanding of the masses and their needs seems to emanate from a logical view established earlier by Psychologist Abraham Maslow as a hierarchy of needs and he has worked his way up on this ladder to help the farmers of the country along with the mass working population build financial security and stability.

He has never lost sight of the basic problems of our society which is poverty and has constantly tried to uplift the poor through his policies.

He also believes that the two most important problems in the nation currently are education and corruption and has worked relentlessly to build a system which promotes education amongst the masses and also allows for a corruption free functioning of all government institutions.

Almost every initiative he has launched after taking over the cen-

tral government of India reflects the two issues whether it’s the digital India campaign or the Beti Padhao campaign. Solving Them Having built a great understanding of the country and the issues hampering its growth, Modi has worked with his government and the officials all over the country to bring India on a growth path.

Modi has always been intent on serving the country and has worked all through his early life to build the growth mindset amongst the political elite as well as the masses of India. He has been active in politics since 1971 and has participated in various non-violent protests as well as paper campaigns to build awareness and push for development of the poor.

Throughout his political career Modi has kept development at the center of his efforts with initiatives like privatization, establishment of groundwater conservation projects etc. as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. Agricultural growth of Gujarat was a record 10.97% under his leadership which reflects for the importance he gave to the farmers.

In addition, he also established public irrigation projects like the Sardar Sarovar Dam and built check dams to build the ground water level in Gujarat which again was a very growth-oriented project. Gujarat prospered under his leadership which helped him build credibility to lead the nation in the future.

Targeted campaigns Modi has been the most effective CEO India Inc. has had in the last 4 decades having created a systematic strategy to deal with most of the identified problems in the current set up. He has worked with his team of ministers, advisors and government officials to list out the big issues which need immediate attention from the government and has carefully carved out an effective strategy to not only solve them but also make sure the ongoing initiatives in India are given their deserved attention in both national and international media.

Make in India While India has established its services industry across the world, it has always struggled to make a manufacturing hub out of India in spite of the lower costs of manufacturing in the country. India has not been able to mirror image the success of its neighbor China in spite of a similar geographical location and a comparable working population both in terms of size and education.

Modi was quick to notice that and launched a campaign called ‘Make in India’ which was launched in September 2014 to make India a viable manufacturing hub for global companies. It is led by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion and aims to raise the contribution of the manufacturing sector to 25% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by the year 2025 from its current 16%.

It targets 25 sectors of the economy which range from automobile to Information Technology (IT) & Business Process Management (BPM).

Make in India is built on 4 pillars .

New Processes: Reflects the ease of doing business in India and the role of the government New infrastructure: reflects the smart cities, industrial corridors and highspeed communication availability for industries.

New sectors: Criteria for investments in many new sectors like the railways were eased out to bring in new sectors for investment.

New Mindset: This reflects the changed way of governance India plans and aspires to bring to the investors to promote Foreign Direct Investment (FDIs) into the country Make in India has led to an increase of 44% in FDIs into the country paving the way for increased employment opportunities.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan This initiative aims to bring cleanliness into the country primarily by achieving an open-defecation free (ODF) environment. A key action item has been construction of household owned and community owned toilets and educating the population about hazards of defecating in the open.

This mission has also created a mechanism the monitoring of usage of such toilets so course correction can be done as needed in the future.

The government has also inspired volunteers known as Swachhagrahis, or “ambassadors of cleanliness” who work with the wider population to promote clean habits in households of India.

This campaign has also joined hands with NGOs working on similar agenda items thus directing activities of like-minded institutions, bodies and individuals towards one common goal.

The prime minister has taken special steps to continue the push and elevate its popularity by choosing regional ambassadors for every region of India like Akhilesh Yadav in UP. Since 2014, The government has constructed 86 million toilets, reducing the number of persons who openly defecate from 550 million to fewer than 150 million in 2018 Beti Padhao Beti Bachao The next one amongst many is the Beti Padhao Beti Bachao campaign which promotes welfare activities for the girl child primarily through education.

This was launched on 22nd Jan-

uary 2015 with an initial funding of Rs. 100 crores with a focus on areas of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Bihar and Delhi.

The aim was to not only improve the sex ratio in India but also improve education and amenities provided to the girl child in India.

This initiative is jointly run by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Sakshi Malik, an Olympic Bronze medalist from 2016 games has been made the brand ambassador for this campaign. Strategic promotional campaigns like #selfiewithdaughter were launched to promote the campaign and bring in additional motivation for the wider campaign. This campaign has been running successfully since 2016 and results for the campaign are being monitored closely by the involved ministries.

Digital India

India has been a cash run economy for decades where majority of transactions are done in the unregulated economy which is largely run by small traders, vendors and service providers who are paid in cash and who spend cash for their regular requirements. This creates a lot of unreported income and promotes corruption. It also reduces government income and hampers the growth of the economy overall.

Under Modi’s leadership, the government has launched a campaign to promote Digital India which aims to not only bring authenticity to every transaction carried out in the country through audit trails but also provide the required infrastructure support for other initiatives like BharatNet, Make in India, Startup India and Standup India, industrial corridors, Bharatmala, Sagarmala, dedicated freight corridors, UDANRCS and E-Kranti.

Digital India was launched on 1st July 2015 and focuses on improving online infrastructure and promoting internet connectivity all over India thus providing the support and help Indian citizens need to make this campaign successful.

The government of India rolled out various new digital services as a part of this initiative like • mygov.in which is a platform for citizens to interact with the government and provide feedback/ raise concerns, • UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for Newage Governance) is a Government of India all-in-one single unified secure multi-channel multi-platform multi-lingual multi-service freeware mobile app for accessing over 1,200 central and state government services in multiple Indian languages, • e-sign framework which allows citizens to esign government documents online thus making it easier to maintain and retrieve records • eHospital application which provides important services such as online registration, payment of fees and appointment, online diagnostic reports, enquiring availabil-

ity of blood online in hospitals • Digital attendance: attendance. gov.in which helps keep a record of the attendance of government employees on a real-time basis • E-sampark which makes it mandatory for big email service providers like Google to provide email boxes in regional languages thus allowing the non-English speaking population to get active on the internet.

• Digital Locker which allows citizens to have their government records stored at one place.

Foreign Policy: Building Brand India A leader with a strategic vision, Mr. Modi has not only worked towards building India internally but also worked with a sound foreign policy to build ‘BRAND INDIA’ in the rest of the world.

Under his leadership India has used its strengths to not only grow and build India from within but also grow international presence on critical world forums like G-20, SAARC. BRICS Policy: This government has taken special steps towards building a small body of the developing economies to grow the influence of this group of nations on worldwide policy decisions taken across global bodies like the UNO, UNHRD, WTO, WHO, WB etc.

Modi is a true leader of the nation as diverse as India who has focused all his policies, decisions, initiatives and activities on one result: Growth of the Indian economy and its people.

All of his initiatives have started only around 2-3 years ago and are still evolving. Some of them might need a course correction depending on how the people of India and the officials involved deliver results for them but the vision involved with each one of them is praiseworthy.

Modi has been a doer, a true Pradhan Sevak of the people as he likes to call himself. There is no doubt about him being a Sevak but he is a Sevak with a true vision for his master and works without making too much noise delivering the best results he can as a leader and ‘Pradhan Sevak’. Now that BJP has won a second mandate, the future of India should be brighter under his leadership!!

Son Soham reflects on his father, Raman Dhar

Raman Dhar was born on May 24th, 1966 in Srinagar, Kashmir, to Jawahar Lal and Krishna Dhar.

He spent his growing years in Bahadurgarh, Haryana and in school excelled in Maths.

His love of Math landed him at the Directorate of Marine Engineering Technology, Calcutta where he pursued his Bachelors in Marine Engineering.

He always said that his real learning happened during his sailing tenure when he used to work with his own hands.

He had the skill to fix almost everything around the house, and he always credited it to his sailing years.

Papa married his wife and my mother, Vandana Kaw, on October 23, 1991.

In November 1992, with much joy, my parents had their first child, my sister, Prathana, while he was working on the seas. He then brought his family to Dubai for several years, where we were able to enjoy the luxuries of the booming country while working in the oil and gas field.

During this period, I was born, my parents named me Soham, and since then I’ve been trying to match my father’s energy.

We then immigrated to Vancouver, Canada, where we created and maintained a loving and tight-knit community that continues to grow today.

Papa always brought comforting tranquility wherever he went.

He would always remind his children that everything will work out and not to stress. His response to any stressful time would be “everything will be fine”.

I would question how he could keep this positivity going so relentlessly, no matter

Our house would be filled with people of all ages, colors and backgrounds, celebrating the joy of laughter.

It was a strange occurrence for me, walking into my own basement to be met by new faces and different voices, but the energy of the room is something I will never forget.

Even during his final months of his life, he started a laughter session during weekends at the Avalon community association, in Sugar Land.

Papa was ambitious and future-minded, but was also easy going and lived firmly in the present.

The Indian American Council, a grassroots volunteer group, was formed in September 2017 by philanthropists and co-founders Aradhana (Anna) and Raj G. Asava to raise awareness and increase community involvement as well as channel the resources and contributions of the Indian American community towards the mission of a hunger-free United States.

In just seven subsequent months, since the launch, the IAC surpassed its goal of funding one million meals, and todate has enabled over 6 million meals for food challenged children, seniors, veterans and needy families across North Texas, Houston and New York City.

The Houston chapter, benefitting Houston Food Bank, is led by Aparna Asthana and Raj Chappidi.

It was established in October 2018 with an ambitious campaign titled “Million Meal March”.

Within the first hour of the launch, IAC raised commitments for more than one million meals, reflecting the “give where you live” spirit of business owners and individuals of the Indian American community who call southeast Texas their home.

HOUSTON Indian Americans across Greater Houston are coming together to fight hunger with the Houston Food Bank during Hunger Mitao Month.

Hunger Mitao is a signature campaign of the Indian American Council (IAC) and is observed during August, the month of India’s Independence Day. The vision is to showcase the unity, philanthropy and spirit of the Indian American community through conducting fund-for-food drives all over the region served by the Houston Food Bank.

With a rally cry of “Hunger Mitao!”, which means wipe out hunger, the entire community is asked to join the Indian American Council in the fight against hunger.

During Hunger Mitao Month, IAC has set a goal of raising a minimum of $2,500 in support of the Houston Food Bank’s mission of fighting hunger across the 18 counties served in southeast Texas.

Pakistan seeks emergency meeting of UN Security Council over Kashmir Pakistan has formally called for an emergency meeting of the

UN Security Council (UNSC) to discuss India’s move to revoke the special status to Jammu and Kashmir, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said on Tuesday.

In video message, Mr. Qureshi said that he sent a formal letter to the president of the UNSC through Permanent Representative Maleha Lodhi to convene the meeting.

Mr. Qureshi said that the letter will also be shared with all members of the UNSC. “I have requested in the letter that a special meeting of the Security Council should be called to discuss those actions of India which we consider as illegal and against the UN resolutions,” he said.

India has categorically told the international community that its move to scrap Article 370 of the Constitution removing the special status to Jammu and Kashmir is an internal matter and has also advised Pakistan to “accept the reality”.

Mr. Qureshi said that the decision to call for the UNSC meeting was taken in the meeting of high-profile National Security Committee meeting held last week.

Mr. Qureshi said Pakistan considered India’s actions in Kashmir as a threat to the regional peace.

“It is a mistake on the part of India if it thought that it could crush the right of self-determination of the people of Kashmir,” he said.

Mr. Qureshi said whole of Pakistan will express solidary with Kashmiris on Wednesday.

Mr. Qureshi said that Kashmiris must remember that Pakistan stands with them and is ready to go to any extent for them.

SC says normality can’t be attained overnight in J&K The Supreme Court on Tuesday said restoration of normality in Jammu and Kashmir cannot be accomplished overnight, the government needed “reasonable time” to guide the Valley back to peace without loss of lives.

“Who will be blamed if something happens,” the court retorted when asked by petitioner-activist Tehseen Poonawalla to, at least, pass an order to restore essential services such as hospitals, police stations and schools.

“Nobody can take even a one per cent chance,”a Bench of Justices Arun Mishra, M.R. Shah and Ajay Rastogi observed.

For the time being, the Bench agreed to wait and watch the goings-on in the Valley for a fortnight. It said the issue was too sensitive for the court to interfere as of now.

Mr. Poonawalla has highlighted certain “regressive measures” like curfew blanketing the Valley and information black-out before and during the blunting of Article 370, by which special rights and privileges accorded to the people of Jammu and Kashmir were scrapped through a Presidential Order on August 5.

The Centre, within hours of announcing the notification of the Presidential Order, tabled the Bill to reorganise the State of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories - Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The Bill was successfully passed in Parliament.

Attorney General K.K. Venugopal said the decision to lift the curfew and restore communications, including

telephone lines and Internet, finally rested with the government. Restrictions were being eased everyday. The ground situation was monitored on a daily basis.

2016 violence Mr. Venugopal recalled how violence spiralled out of control in 2016 following the death of Hizb-ul- Mujahideen ‘commander’ Burhan Wani by security forces in Kashmir.

Senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy, for Mr. Poonawalla, opened her submissions by pointing to how even soldiers in Kashmir were unable to communicate back home due to the information black-out. “Imagine a Diwali in which you cannot call your mother,” she said.

Ms. Guruswamy said people were unable to reach hospitals.

Justice Mishra said the situation was “very grave” and the restrictions were in place to prevent any law and order problem. “But how long will this continue?” Justice Mishra turned to Mr. Venugopal.

Sudarshan Pattnaik’s sculpture highlighted the dangers of plastic pollution in oceans Renowned Indian sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has won the People’s Choice Award at the recently-concluded Revere Beach International Sand Sculpting Festival in Boston, Massachusetts.

Pattnaik was among the 15 top sand artists selected from across the world to participate in the annual festival. His sand sculpture titled “Stop Plastic Pollution, Save Our Ocean,” highlighted dangers of plastic pollution in oceans and the importance and urgency to combat it. The Odisha native is known to convey social messages and themes through his art.

Pattnaik’s sculpture showed

a turtle caught in a plastic bag and a fish with plastic trash such as slippers, bottles and glass inside its body. The tail of the fish is in the mouth of a human, signifying how plastic pollution in the oceans is adversely impacting human beings also when they consume sea food.

“This is a very big award and honor for me in the U.S.,” Pattnaik told the Press Trust of India. “This award is for India,” he added. “Thousands of people voting for my sculpture that highlights the problem of plastic pollution underscores that the public too is concerned about our oceans getting polluted and supports the urgent

need to take action to save our oceans and planet,” he said.

Through his sculpture he said he wants to highlight that human activity is destroying the oceans and humans are also getting impacted by polluted waterways as they consume food from the sea and rivers.

Hosted by non-profit organization Revere Beach Partnership, the festival, now in its 16th year, ran from July 26-28 and was attended by close to a million people. One of the largest sand sculpting festivals in the world, it sees participation from leading sand sculptors from around the world.

NEWS Trump has made it clear mediation offer on Kashmir not on table anymore: Shringla US President Donald Trump has made it clear that his offer of mediation on Kashmir is not on the table anymore, a top Indian diplomat said on Monday.

India’s Ambassador to the US, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, said that America’s decadesold policy on Kashmir has been no mediation but to encourage India and Pakistan to resolve their differences bilaterally.

“President Trump has made it very clear that his offer to mediate on Jammu and Kashmir is dependent on both India and Pakistan accepting it.

Since India has not accepted the offer of mediation, he has made it clear that this is not on the table anymore,” Shringla told Fox News, the favourite news channel of the US president.

On July 22, during his joint media appearance with Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan at the White House, President Trump stunned India by saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought his mediation/arbitration on the Kashmir issue.

India asserted that no such request was made by Prime Minister Modi to the US president and all issues will have to be resolved with Islamabad bilaterally.

A week later, President Trump said he would “certainly intervene” between India and Pakistan on Kashmir if they wanted him to. He said it was up to India and Pakistan to

In an unprecedented move, a US Congressman has apologised to Indian Americans for not consulting them before writing a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to express his concerns on human rights situation in Kashmir after India scrapped the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.

Congressman Tom Suozzi in a letter to Pompeo on August 9 said that the the action by the Indian government in Kashmir “risks provoking mass social unrest...”

“These new restrictions on the autonomy of the state and the rights of Kashmiris could also embolden extremists and terrorists to act,” Suozzi said in his letter after India scrapped Article 370 of the Constitution that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated the state into two Union Territories.

Agitated over the letter, several Indian Americans, who constitute a significant part of Suozzi’s Congressional District in New York and had played a key role in his election and fund raising, flooded the office of the Congressman with angry messages.

Suozzi called an emergency meeting of Indian Americans, which was attended by more than 100 Indian community members, who demanded the lawmaker to withdraw his letter.

Suozzi in a statement said, “On Sunday, I met with 100 of my Indian-American constituents regarding my recent letter to Secretary Pompeo expressing my concerns about recent developments in Kashmir.”

“Based upon my meeting it is clear that it was a mistake to not consult with some of my Indian-American friends and supporters before I sent the letter. I should have. I am sorry. If I had met with them before sending the letter, I would have framed my concerns differently,” Suozzi said.

He said that throughout his career in public service, he has been an ardent supporter of India, their sovereignty, and have always stood with them in their fight against terrorism. The US-India relationship will be one of the most important over the next 50 years and beyond, he said, adding that he has spent his time in Congress promoting and elevating this relationship and will continue to do so.

Mughal Gardens The bells for India’s Independence Day – August 15 – started ringing early this year.

Ten days early.

Independence is freedom from oppression. Rabindranath Tagore, India’s poet par excellence & first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (1913), is often evoked & invoked come Independence Day. The poem ‘Where the Mind is Without Fear’ is a favourite with its fittingly spiritual underpinnings of a newly free(d) Bharatmata.

But this year, a different Tagore poem Freedom acquires special meaning, since the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu, Kashmir & Ladakh on August 5.

Article 370 was alienating Jammu & Kashmir from the rest of India, making it oppressive for India with terrorism in Kashmiri caused by Pakistan via their soldiers fighting as freedom fighters.

Tagore wrote: Freedom from fear is the freedom I claim for you my motherland!

Freedom from the insult of dwelling in a puppet’s world, where movements are started through brainless wires, repeated through mindless habits, where figures wait with patience and obedience for the master of show, to be stirred into a mimicry of life.

Now, Jammu is peaceful.

So is Ladakh. Kashmir will be once Pakistanis in Kashmir & some Kashmiri leaders are shown the door. The Kashmiris have two options. They can either choose peace for progress & prosperity or they can choose the status quo of terrorism, manipulation (of India) & corruption.

The status quo comes with families that profit from it – the Abdullahs, the Muftis & the

terrorist outfits (read Pakistan), and may also find support from elements in India like the Kanhaiya Kumars (read Communists) who aid & abate gold diggers & carpetbaggers.

Don’t be surprised if many with good brains & ex-big names join the chorus of prophets of doom.

Those are the only prophets you will find in Kashmir. And you will find them from most sides of the aisle.

The Chidambarams of vested interests join hands with the Yashwant Sinhas of sour grapes.

There will also be Sonias & Rahuls wailing in the name people dying in Kashmir.

These people have been wailing even before the abrogation of Article 370.

You will hear wails like ‘betrayal by India’, ‘promise not kept.’

All that is a cover for agents of terrorism, agents of oppression flourishing with Pakistani money, perhaps the dollars they got from America for ‘military’ expenditure. But that is the history of Kashmir & Kashmir alone. Not Jammu.

The loudest (shrill) words you will hear would be of Kashmir ‘losing its identity’, never mind that Kashmir started losing its identity the moment terrorists arrived.

A nostalgic Kashmiri woman columnist (once married to a Pakistani) recalled the days when many Hindi films (& only Hindi films, not Tamil or Malayalam or Kannada films) had a scene or a song shot in the beautiful & luscious Kashmir. Those film units & those Hindi films are gone now, she laments.

“Kashmir was destroyed not by political problems and alienation but because of the advent of the new Islam that blew into the Valley in the Eighties when money started pouring in from Saudi Arabia to groups the Jamaat-e-Islami.”

Kashmir is still luscious but

the only people who are enjoying Kashmir’s beauty today & for three decades are those who drove away peace & Pandits from the valley.

Today Kashmiris would be hard put to name the last film they saw with a scene/song shot in Kashmir after 1980. Indian film makers & audiences still love Kashmir’s beauty but fear & survival come first.

The crocodiles currently shedding tears for the ‘humanity (insaniyat)’ in Kashmir, for those dying in Kashmir are natives of the very country that caused terrorism against (& in) Kashmir costing thousands of innocent Kashmiri & Indian lives since late 1980s.

The special status under Article 370 was twisted as a separate identity thus imposing a Kashmiri apartheid on India (read Hindus), making Kashmiri pandits 370’s first apartheid’s victims. These maut ke saudaagars created & hid behind Jamaat-e-Islami, Hizbul Mujahedeen etc.

The fact that of all the regions/’territories’ in India that came & some still are under Article 370, only Kashmir - not Jammu, not Ladakh - destroyed its own peace because enough ambitious & greedy locals let themselves be used by anti-India elements from across the border with encouragement and blind eye from international community.

Article 370 was turned into an oppressor of Kashmir and by extension, India.

The now infamous UN human rights report on Jammu & Kashmir repeatedly harped on the so-called violations by India, often intentionally ignoring the inhuman provocations

by Pakistan & its terrorists in Kashmir. The same UN report has hardly ever said a word about the violations in the Pakoccupied Kashmir (PoK). They chose not to mention that there was democracy in Jammu & Kashmir but no democracy in PoK. The countries & leaders

that were a part of these observation teams have blood on their hands. That’s most of the Western countries.

Meanwhile the Chinese ignored everything that Pakistan did so long as they got their pound of flesh – part of Kashmir that Pakistan handed them on a platter.

Allegedly the main reason behind Pakistan ceding land to China in Kashmir was to make it a party to any future discussions about Kashmir – the best third party they could have at the table - & make it a trilateral problem, not bilateral.

It’s easy to blame Jawaharlal Nehru for the Kashmir problem. Perception from years of distance seems to justify it. But we made Nehru & our other national leaders of the time, infallible & immune to any pressures.

On closer look at the events then, and not just the papers signed at the time, our leaders may have been charting an unfamiliar territory with little time on hand, treading in a partially lit area.

Hindsight is 20/20 and ‘we would have done things differently’ is a common refrain.

With the Pakistani army in the garb of Kashmiri freedom fighters on their heels, Nehru & the Indian leaders hurriedly put together a patchwork of Kashmir annexation.

Some Kashmiri Muslims & their infamous leaders with their equally infamous echo chambers among Kashmiri & Indian leaders, journos etc. are mouthing ‘India broke the promise it made to Kashmir’.

Talk about cat calling the kettle back. India didn’t break any promise. The Kashmiris did when they fell easy prey to their own ambitions, and to the money that came from across the border, along with actual fighters Pakistan was ready, willing & happy to provide.

It’s the post-1980, postterrorism Indian governments that let the problem fester.

The Congress leaders sat on their fannies & played pretend games with Kashmiri leaders.

Under a coalition government, Atal Bihari Vajpayee (March 1998 to May 2004) didn’t have the consensus to take bold steps. So, he did the next best thing – talks to end all talks for a final solution.

Vajpayee offered Pakistan & the Kashmiris more than ever before for a lasting peace.

But Vinaashkale Vipareeta Buddhee. The enemy never changed. Its names changed from Ayub to Zia to Zulfi to Benazir to Musharraf and they too played pretend games.

Peace with India was the last thing they ever wanted.

With peace, they could neither harass India nor provoke Kashmiris against India. The contentious state of flux in Kashmir & international complaints against India would not come from peace with India.

Since mid to late 1980s, Kashmir was not the issue nor war or peace. It was revenge for breaking up Pakistan (1971), when East Pakistan became Bangla Desh. That’s was the seed of revenge.

Now we’re at the dawn of a new beginning for India, more so for Kashmir. Jammu was never a problem. It will be interesting to see which one makes more progress, Jammu or Kashmir. No Abdullahs to manipulate Indian government, no Muftis to talk from both sides of the mouth & hopefully no corruption. BJP knows what’s good for the country is good for the party and also will be good for Jammu & Kashmir & Ladakh.

It’s up to the three new Union Territories to turn this win-win situation into a win-win reality.

Jammu, Ladakh and India want peace.

Do Kashmiri Muslims want peace? A more important question has not been put to the Kashmiri Muslims since Article 370 made them & India victims thanks to Pakistan.

On one side are India, Jammu, Ladakh, peace & progress.

On the other are the Kashmiris.

There shouldn’t be the other side but the Kashmiris put Article 370 in the middle all these years. Can’t do that anymore.

For the borders to be more than just lines on a map, Kashmir’s (re?) merger with India will need long term peace for stability & economic progress.

It is too early to say what lies ahead. The alternative for Kashmir is fighting to go back to how things were before August 5.

That means instability, violence, deaths & more deaths.

Who in their right mind would want that?

Not a difficult question to answer. But more unfathomable things have happened. In Kashmir as in life, it’s a matter of ‘you never know’.

Finally, among the Indian leaders who criticized BJP’s Aug. 5 action to remove Kashmir’s special status, the rotten tomatoes (award?) for making the most irresponsibly harmful comments go to P. Chidambaram, India’s former Finance Minister.

Speaking at a public event in Chennai on Sunday, PC said, “If Jammu & Kashmir was a Hindu-dominated state, the BJP would not have done this. They did it only because the region is dominated by Muslims.”

It’s not like he doesn’t know that, for four decades, Kashmir has been the only flashpoint of terrorism for India. It is also the only one that Pakistan has repeatedly exploited for international attention & trouble.

STORY OF MAHATMA GANDHI Gandhi invites untouchable family in ashram Gandhi went to Rajkot and Porbandar to meet his relatives and then went on to Shantiniketan. There Gandhi met poet laureate Rabindranath Tagore for the first time, as well as C. F. Andrews.

Andrews, who came to India as an Anglican priest in 1904, was one of the very few people respected both within Indian nationalist circles and official British ones. A close friend of Gandhi, Tagore and other eminent Indians of the time, Andrews never ceased to champion the Indian cause for independence and, in a broader sense, the cause of all downtrodden peoples against oppression. Now read on.

During his short stay at Santiniketan Gandhi heard the sad news that Gokhale had passed away. He immediately left for Poona, C. F. Andrews accompanying him as far as Burdwan.

“Do you think,” Andrews asked Gandhi, “that a time will come for satyagraha in India? If so, how soon will it be?”

“It is difficult to say,” replied Gandhi. “For one year I am to do nothing. Gokhale made me promise that I would travel in India for one year to gain experience, and that I would express no opinion until I had finished this period of probation. So I do not think there will be any occasion for satyagraha for five years.”

After attending the shraddha ceremonies of Gokhale, Gandhi met the leaders of the Servants of India Society. Out of respect for Gokhale he would have joined the Society, but there was opposition from a certain sections of the members.

Gandhi visited Rangoon, in Burma, for a short period and on his return he went to Hardwar during the time of the Kumbha Mela. About 1.7 million people attended the mela. Volunteer corps from different organizations had gone to Hardwar to be of service to the big crowds that were flowing in. Gandhi was invited to go there with the Phoenix party with the Phoenix party to help the volunteers. The Phoenix group went there and Gandhi joined them.

Gandhi was pained at the many happenings and shortcomings at the great religious fair. There was corruption, there was cheating and many other unsocial activities.

Scant care was taken about sanitary arrangements.

All this made Gandhi, feel very sad. He thought a great deal about the problem of how to improve the Indian character.

In May 1915 an ashram was established in a village near Ahmedabad. The city was an ancient centre of handloom weaving and Gandhi thought the place was suited for the revival of the cottage industry of hand-spinning.

Gandhi named the new institution Satyagraha Ashram.

“Our creed is devotion to truth, and our business is the search for and insistence on truth,” he said.

A simple uniform style of clothing was worn by all who were there. They took their food to-

gether in a common kitchen and strove to live as one family.

Gandhi told the members: “If you want to serve the people, it is essential to observe the vows of truth, ahimsa, celibacy, non-stealing, non-possession, and control of the palate.”

One day Gandhi said to members of the ashram, “I have received an applicaiton from an untouchable family who want to join us here. I am replyuing to them that they are welcome.”

Even Kasturbai had her misgivings. Gandhi’s mind was made up, however, and there could be no objection from anyone in the ashram. But the patrons of the ashram did not like the idea and they stopped funding the ashram.

The ashram was suddenly faced with an acute financial crisis, but help came unexpectedly.

A rich man came to the ashram and gave Gandhi Rs. 13,000 and urged him to continue running the ashram.

In February 1916, Gandhi was invited to speak at the laying of the foundation-stone of the Banaras Hindu University. The Viceroy and many of the most important people of India were there.

Gandhi, clad in a Kathiawadi long coat and a turban, rose to speak. The police arrangements, and also the pomp and luxury around him, hurt him deeply. Turning to the audience he said, “I want to think audibly and speak without reserve. His first words froze the audience. “It is a matter of deep humiliation and shame for us,” he said, “that I am compelled this evening under the shadow of this great college, in this sacred city, to address my countrymen in a language that is foreign to me.”

It was a bombshell. Nobody had ever dared to speak against the English language. The British officers, then friends, and the important Indians who had gathered there were seething in anger.

But Gandhi went on, “His Highness the Maharaja who presided yesterday over our deliberations spoke about the poverty of India.

But what did we witness? A most gorgeous show, an exhibition of jewellery... There is no salvation for India unless you strip yourselves of this jewellery and hold it in trust for your countrymen in

Gandhi gave a long speech, covering many topics. His speech was full of outspoken criticism.

Mrs. Annie Besant, who was one of the organizers of the function, was horrified and urged Gandhi to sit down. But Gandhi went on. Some people went red with rage, but others listened to Gandhi with great interest.

“Here at last is a man telling the truth,” they thought. “He is the man to raise India from the mire.”

They applauded him and shouted joyfully. Gandhi turned to them and said, “No amount of speeches will ever make us fit for self-government. It is only our conduct that will make us deserve it.

Gandhi told them that they should all be the kind of people able to take up the work of selfgovernment.

Finally, Gandhi, the man who three times had supported the British in their war efforts, said, “If I found it necessary for the salvation of India that the English should retire, that they should be driven out, I would not hesitate to declare that they would have to go, and I hope I would be prepared to die in defence of that belief.”

The people were amazed at Gandhi’s frankness. It was Gandhi’s first great political speech in India.

Years later, Jawaharlal Nehru described what the coming of Gandhi meant to the Indian people. He said, “We seemed to be helpless in the grip of some allpowerful monster; our limbs were paralysed, our minds deadened.

What could we do? How could we pull India out of this quagmire of poverty and defeatism which sucked her in...

Several conferences demanding home rule were held in India during the latter half of 1916.

They marked a new wave of political life under the leadership of Tilak, Mrs. Besant, and Jinnah.

CHEF’S CORNER Low-cal Palak Paneer

Ingredients: 2 bunches spinach, cleaned, chopped; 100gm paneer, 2 cloves garlic, crushed; 1/2 tsp. ginger, grated; 2 green chillies, crushed; 1/4 tsp. cumin seeds, 1/4 tsp. sugar, 1/2 tsp. wheat flour, 3-4 pinches turmeric powder, 3-4 pinches cinnamon-clove powder, 3-4 pinches hing, 1 pinch garam masala powder, salt and lime juice to taste.

Method: Wash and drain spinach. Boil in minimal water till soft and bright. Drain, cool, grind with flour, ginger, garlic, chillies. Heat a heavy or nonstick pan, add seeds. When roasted add asafetida and ground spinach. Add all other ingredients, except paneer and lemon juice. Stir, cover and simmer for 3-4 minutes. Add paneer and lemon juice, stir gently. Simmer further for 2 minutes.

Pour into serving dish. Serve hot with wheat flour phulkas, or steamed brown rice. Note: Most other veggies may be similarly cooked by using the oil-less tempering method as used above.

Paneer Shashlik

Ingredients: 250 gm paneer, 2 onions (sliced), 1 bell pepper, sliced, 1/2 cup tomato puree, 2 tbsp ghee, 1/2 cup fresh cream, 1/4 tsp garam masala, salt and red chilli powder to taste.

Method: Heat ghee in a pan, add onions and bell pepper. Cook for two minutes. Then add tomato puree, fresh cream, salt, garam masala and red chilli powder.

Cook for one minute. Cut paneer into cubes and add to the masala.

Mix well. You can add half tea spoon of sugar if you want sweet and sour taste. Cook again for two minutes. Serve hot.

Paneer Pakoras

Ingredients: 1/2 lb Paneer, 1 cup besan flour, 2 tbsp corn flour, salt and pepper.

For Garnishing: 2 tsp oil, 1 tsp Jeera, 1 bunch mint leaves, red chillies, green pepper, 1 tsp chat masala.

Method: Cut Paneer into inch long pieces. Mix besan, salt, black pepper, corn flour in a mixing bowl with water into a thick, sticky paste. Immerse paneer into the flour. Drop bite-sized pakoras into hot oil. Deep fry on medium till golden brown.

Garnishing: Chop the green chillies into small pieces finely.

Heat oil in frying pan. Add jeera seeds, chillies. Sprinkle chat masala powder, salt, pepper. Finally, add mint leaves to the ingredients. Mix with Paneer

Pakoras in the pan. Garnish and serve hot with ketchup.

Kesaria Paneer Kheer

Ingredients: 1 kg Milk, 250gm paneer, 1/4 tsp crushed Saffron, a pinch of cardamom powder, 20 almonds and 20 Cashews, 1/2 can unsweetened condensed milk, 300gm sugar Method: Boil milk for about 20 min. Add condensed milk and stir it thoroughly. Add sugar and mashed paneer in the milk. Stir it thoroughly near about 10 min. Add all the other ingredients into it.

Refrigerate and serve chilled.

Onam Treat — Parippu Pradhaman

Ingredients: 1/4 cup moong dal, 1/2 a grated coconut, 1/2 lb jaggery, 2 tbsp ghee.

Method: Cook dal with 3/4 cups of water, let it cool and mash well. Make syrup of jaggery, by boiling it with 3/4 cup of water.

Slice 2-3 thin long pieces from coconut keep aside. Grate the rest of coconut. Take the milk by squeezing well (first extraction of milk), keep aside. Grind the remaining coconut in a mixer for 1020 seconds. Mix well with 1 cup of water and take the second extraction of milk. Similarly take third extraction of milk. In flat, thick-bottomed pan heat 1 tbsp ghee and add mashed dal. Mix well and fry for a while till ghee separates.

Add jaggery to pan, mix well and keep stirring till it comes to a boil. Add the third extraction of milk, keep on stirring. Bring to a boil then reduce the heat to low medium and cook continuously stirring till coconut milk reduces by half. Now add second extraction of milk and repeat the same process. Add first extraction of milk. If required add little sugar.

And switch off the stove and let it remain there for 30 minutes. Mean while cut the coconut strips into small pieces. Heat remaining ghee in a pan and fry the coconut pieces till brown. Pour over the hot pradaman. Serve hot or refrigerate and serve.
