Meera Krishnan renders evocative and soulful dance debut
By THARA NARASIMHAN Meera Krishnan, a disciple of Guru Padmini Chari, of the Nritya School of Dance, presented a debut dance performance dedicated to Lord Krishna on August 4th at the JCC Kaplan theatre in Houston. In an authentic Kalakshetra style of dance, her guru had thematically choreographed the
repertoire of devotional songs of Lord Krishna, and Meera presented it in an impressive and splendid manner. The performance was decked with a garland to call out the names of Lord Krishna. The themes chosen were on Lord Krishna, the embodiment of divinity, and the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu.
Opening her dance recital with the invocatory Muralidhara Kavuthuvam, Meera instantly grabbed attention with her lively stage presence. A traditional Jathiswaram was next with crisp rhythmic patterns in Raga Varali that was a composition of Madurai Krishnan. The masterpiece rendition of
Meera as reclining Lord Ranganatha.

Varnam “Sakhiye I n d a Ve l a i y i l Jalam Seyyadhe” in Raga Ananda Bhairavi, in praise of Rajagopalaswami of Mannargudi, was a strikingly beautiful piece and remarkably choreographed by Guru Padmini Chari. The song reflected the loving feeling of longing, revealing nuances of the Nayika’s emotional state. Meera’s excellent Nritya skill and expressive Abhinaya were perfectly matched. Rasa is the dominant emotion

or feeling. Meera demonstrated the explanatory aspect of dance where hand gestures and facial expressions conveyed the meaning of the lyrics of the song. It was an uplifting experience, elevating both the dancer and the spectator. Then followed the famous Keertana ‘Yen Pallikondeerayya,’ a composition of Arunachala Kavi extolling the posture of “Anantha Sayana” of the reclining Lord Ranganatha. This song is addressed to the Lord of Srirangam, by the composer who wonders whether He got tired of the various adventures that He had taken in Rama Avatar, vanquishing the clan of the mighty rakshasa, Ravana. Next a Purandaradasa kriti ‘Neenyako Ranga,’ in which Meera artistically narrated the stories of puranic episodes of Gajendra, Prahlada, and Draupadi and conveyed the core message of the strength of chanting His Holy name alone is sufficient. The outpouring love for Lord Krishna through the vision of Sri Andal, the South Indian Vaishnavite Alwar and poet, was depicted with charming grace in befitting attire, sporting the Andal “kondai”, the headdress, and a garland. The penultimate dance was Thillana in Brindavana Saranga. The alluring music of the Vocalist, Pusthakam Ramaa, Flautist Janardhana Rao, Percussionist Jayaram Kikkeri, and Bhargava Halambi on
Rhythm Pad, provided the thread that was musically binding the presence of Lord Krishna. They enhanced the performance and provided a spiritual impact as well. Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhuji, Hanumatpresaka Swami, a Gaudiya Vaishnava guru and a spiritual leader for the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, the Chief Guest, congratulated the Guru and the Sishya for the performance that was a devotional and delightful experience. Meera is indeed very blessed to have as her Guru Padmini Chari, Founder and Artistic Director of Nritya School of Dance. Padmini’s forte is imparting training in the Kalakshetra style renowned for its purity. This year Padmini Chari completed her first 100th dance Arangetrams at the Nritya School. Lots of blessings came from the ISKCON temple of Houston, with Meera’s debut performance being her 98th this year. The President of ISKCON Houston Dr. Hansa Medly recognized Padmini Chari. Meera raised funds through her dance performance for a noble cause with a chosen mission of her choice “Educate a girl” through Food for Life Vrindavan (FFLV). Varsha Vasu, a student of Guru Padmini Chari for many years, brilliantly matched as the MC of the evening.

COMMUNITY BITSian Day Celebrated Every year on August 2, BITSians across the world gather to
celebrate BITSian Day and the strong link that binds them together. This link is the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, one of India’s premier educational institutes, a temple of learning, an oasis of serenity and moral values in the nondescript town of Pilani, far from the noisy conundrums of city life. It’s a place where knowledge is in the air, where we enter as boys and girls and leave as friends for life. It is a place where Goddess Saraswati is worshipped and the temple not only has deities but also science icons and pioneers. To strengthen this beautiful bond, alumni met at Saint Arnold’s Brewery on August 2, and celebrated their memories across the years, caught up with each other’s accomplishments and lives, rejoiced at the similarities, appreciated the differences and parted with a promise to meet again in the following year. The Houston Chapter of BITSAA International was inaugurated in August 2013 by the then Consul General of India, Parvathaneni Harish and his wife Nandita. BITSian Day is observed by over 40,000 alumni members residing in various countries all over the world.

Maha Sur Sang : Grand confluence of legendary musicians
BY RATNA SINHA The evening of August 10th will go down in history as a remarkable confluence of legendary musicians. This was possible because of the effort of Pandit Suman Ghosh, who spearheads the Center for Indian Classical Music of Houston (CICMH). Pandit Suman Ghosh is not only an artist extraordinaire in his own right but also contributes to the preservation and propagation of Indian Classical Music, a tradition that is almost 5000 years old. The Chief Guest Consul General of India, Dr. Anupam Ray made a brief appearance and rightly called it “saadhana”, which literally translates into routine spiritual practice coupled with the surrendering of the ego- a fitting tribute to And then came another legPandit Ghosh for his relentless end – the Emperor of musical and tireless endeavor to awaken Aesthetics. From Page 1 to Houston,” said U.S. Senator John Cornyn. “India continues to be a key security and economic partner of the United States, and I look forward to seeing that relationship strengthen with his visit to Texas.” The event reflects strong community involvement, with the engagement ofmore than 1,000 volunteers and 650 Welcome Partner organizations. The event also shines a light on growing trade between India and Houston. In 2019 to date, India is Houston’s fourth largest trading partner, just behind Brazil, China and Mexico. From 2009 to 2018, trade between Houston and India averaged $4.8 billion annually and was valued at $7.2 billion in 2018. There are more than 130,000 individuals of Indian origin in the Houston area, according to the American Community Survey in 2017. “Houston is one of the most diverse cities in America, and has many advantages including a centra location and access to global trade routes, a trained and talented workforce, and a business-friendly regulatory environment, making this region an ideal partner for business and commerce. I’m personally proud of the vibrant and welcoming Indian community here, and the work they do to strengthen the ties between our two great countries. We are honored to host Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this historic event,” said Bhavesh (Bob) Patel, CEO of LyondellBasell. Potential attendees can still register for the free event at www.howdymodi.org. New registrants will be on a waiting list. Registration for university students is open until August 29th as part of a special allotment. The audience will have the chance to hear Modi’s vision for India and the U.S.-India partnership. The address will have simultaneous English translation available via your smartphone. It will also be broadcast live online and on television channels reaching over 1 billion people across the U.S. and India. Doors for the event will open at 7:30 a.m., and the program will begin at 10:00 a.m. The Texas India orum will have busing available for certain far-out Houston suburbs and those unable to drive themselves to the event. The website has additional information on its FAQ page for attendees. Texas India Forum has retained MELA Arts Connect from New York City to curate, produce and direct a cultural program for the event. The program will feature a mix of artists from Houston as
well as elsewhere in Texas and the U.S. Notably, the program will not feature any performers from India. The organizing committee has insisted on showcasing the wealth of talent in the Indian-American community. “The cultural program will provide a unique view on the Indian-American experience, and promises to show the diversity of our community while being an engaging and entertaining performance,” said Jugal Malani, chair of the “Howdy, Modi!” organizing committee. STORY OF MAHATMA GANDHI
In Champaran, “face-to-face with God, ahimsa, truth”
The annual meeting of the Congress was held in December 1916 in Lucknow. The Congress was divided. There were the moderates and there were the extremists, but at Lucknow the Congress met without tension between the two wings. The President, Ambika Charan Mazumdar, spoke in terms of Swaraj, which previous leaders had demanded. A resolution was passed appealing to His Majesty’s Government and demanding that a definite step should be taken towards Indian self-government by granting the reforms contained in the scheme prepared by the AllIndia Congress Committee and adopted by the All-India Muslim League. In Lucknow the Congress and the Muslim League came to an agreement. This was later known as the Lucknow Pact. For the sake of the unity of India the Congress conceded many points demanded by the Muslims. For two years Gandhi had travelled extensively in India and had talked at different places. He now wanted to start some work connected with labor. His interest first centered on the problem of indentured labor, the system under which poor, ignorant laborers were enticed away from India to work in the British colonies. He had fought this system in South Africa and he wanted to see it abolished. The Viceroy, Lord Hardinge, announced that His Majesty’s Government had agreed to abolish the system’ in due course. Gandhi, however, wanted a definite date before which the system would go. So now Gandhi started a great agitation on this issue. He went to Bombay and consulted all the Indian leaders there. They fixed May 31, 1917 as the last date for the abolition of indentured labor. He then went around the country to get support for this view. Meetings were held in all important places. Everywhere there was a great response. Even Gandhi said that he had not expected so much public support. As a result of the agitation, the Government announced that the system of indentured labor would be stopped before July 31,1917. Gandhi had heard about an obnoxious system of agricultural labor prevailing in Bihar. In the Champaran district of Bihar, the cultivators were forced by Europeans to grow indigo, a blue dye, and this imposed on them untold sufferings. They could not grow the food they needed, nor did they receive adequate payment for the indigo. Gandhi was unaware of this until an agriculturist from Bihar, Rajkumar Shukla, met him and told him of the woes of the people of Champaran. He requested Gandhi to go to the place and see for himself the state of affairs there. Gandhi was then attending the Congress meeting at Lucknow and he did not have time to go there. Rajkumar Shukla followed

him about, begging him to come and help the suffering villagers in Champaran. Gandhi at last promised to visit the place after he had visited Calcutta. When Gandhi was in Calcutta, Rajkumar was there too, to take him to Bihar. Gandhi went to Champaran with Rajkumar early in 1917. On his arrival the District Magistrate served him with a notice saying that he was not to remain in the district of Champaran but must leave the place by the first available train. Gandhi disobeyed this order. He was summoned to appear before the court. The magistrate said, “If you leave the district now and promise not to return, the case against you will be withdrawn: “This cannot be,” said Gandhi. “I came here to render humanitarian and national service. I shall make Champaran my home and work for the suffering people.’ A large crowd of peasants was outside the court shouting slogans. The magistrate and the police looked nervous. Then Gandhi said, “I shall help you and calm these people if you let me speak to them.” Gandhi appeared before the crowd and said, “You must show your faith in me and in my work by remaining quiet. The magistrate had the right to arrest me, because I disobeyed his order. If I am sent to jail, you must accept that as just. We must work peacefully. Any violent act will harm our cause.” The crowd dispersed peacefully. The police stared at Gandhi in admiration as he went inside the court. “That day in Champaran was an unforgettable event in my life ..... It is no exaggeration, but the literal truth, to say that in this meeting with the peasants, I was face to face with God, ahimsa and truth,” Gandhi wrote later. The Government withdrew the case against Gandhi and allowed him to remain in the district. Gandhi stayed there to study the grievances of the peasants. He visited many villages. He cross-examined about 8,000 cul-
tivators and recorded their statements. In this way he arrived at an exact understanding of their plight and the causes. He came to the conclusion that the ignorance of the cultivators was one of the main reasons why the European planters could exploit them. Gandhi set up voluntary organizations to improve the economic and educational conditions of the people. They opened schools and taught the people how to improve sanitation. The Government realized Gandhi’s strength and devotion to his causes. They themselves then set up a committee to enquire into the grievances of the cultivators. They invited Gandhi to serve on that committee, and he agreed. The result was that within a few months the Champaran Agrarian Bill was passed. It gave great relief to the cultivators and land tenants. Gandhi could not stay longer in Bihar. There were calls from other places. Labor unrest was brewing in Ahmedabad and Gandhi was requested to help settle the dispute. Gandhi hurried back to Ahmedabad. Before taking up the labor dispute Gandhi wanted to move his ashram. The Satyagraha Ashram was in a village near Ahmedabad, but the surroundings were not clean and plague had broken out. It had spread there from Ahmedabad. A rich merchant of Ahmedabad, who was closely associated with the ashram, volunteered to procure a suitable piece of land. Gandhi went about with him looking for land and at last they chose a place on the bank of the Sabarmati river, near the Sabarmati Central Jail. The land was purchased and there the famous Sabarmati Ashram was started. In Ahmedabad there were many textile mills. Prices had gone up and the mill workers were demanding higher wages. The mill owners would not agree. Gandhi sympathized with the workers and took up their cause. He launched a struggle and resorted to peaceful resistance. The workers proudly followed Gandhi and pledged their full support to him. They paraded the streets with large banners, and said they would not go back to work until a settlement had been reached. — To be Continued
