Modi-Trump summit promises invincible Indo-US ties

A victory lap followed the standing ovation around the arena.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump created a memorable spectacle of a lovefest between the two nations and the two leaders at the Howdy Modi event held at NRG Stadium in Houston on Sept. 22.

The five-hour-long program witnessed the climax of Modi introducing President Trump, Trump delivering his 30 minute speech, followed by Modi’s inimitable oratory in Hindi.

“From CEO to Commanderin-Chief, from boardroom to the Oval Office, from studios to the global stage, from politics to the economy and to security he has left a deep and lasting impact everywhere,” said Modi while introducing Trump and said every time they met, “I found the friendliness, warmth, energy of the President of the United States of America – Mr. Donald Trump.

warm, friendly, accessible, energetic and full of wit. I admire him for something more. His sense of leadership, a passion for America, a concern for every American, a belief in American future and a strong resolve to Make America Great Again.”

When it was Trump’s turn, the crowd cheered him with the chorus “USA, USA.” “Modi is one of the greatest, most devoted and most loyal friend of America,” Trump said in his opening. Prime Minister Modi is doing an exceptional job for India and all the Indian people, he said. “It is a profoundly historic day to be joined by 50,000 of America’s incredible members of our nation’s, thriving, prosperous and hardworking Indian American community.”

Trump alluded to Modi’s reelection in the historic election where more than 600 million people went to the polls. He referred to Modi’s recent milestone and wished him a “Happy Birthday,” as well.

Trump also referred to the recent floods in Houston and the victims, promising all federal help to restore, recover and rebuild.

“Prime Minister Modi and I have come to Houston to celebrate everything that unites America and India, ‘our shared dreams and bright futures,’” Trump said.

He also expressed his

gratitude to the 4-million strong Indian Americans across the country.

“You enrich our culture; you uphold our values; you uplift our communities and you are truly proud to be Americans and we are proud to have you as Americans,” Trump said.

As promised during his election campaign that India would have a true and great friend in the White House, Trump said “You never had a better friend as president than President Donald Trump.”

The relationship between India and the U.S. has been stronger than ever before and ties between our two nations are grounded in our common values and shared dreams of democracy, he said.

Both the Indian and American Constitutions begin with the same three words “We, the people,” Trump said.

Under Prime Minister Modi, the world is witnessing a strong, shining and thriving Republic of India, Trump said.

That, within a decade, India lifted 300 million people out of poverty is an incredible number, he added.

In India and the U.S., people are prospering like never before because we are slashing bureaucracy and job-killing

red tape. Because of tax cuts and pro-worker policies, the U.S. economy is breaking one record after another, he said.

The US unemployment rate has reached the lowest level in 51 years. In the last two years, the unemployment rate among Indian Americans has dropped by 33.33 percent, Trump said.

“Every day, the Indian American community is helping our country to strengthen our future,” he said.

“Prime Minister Modi, I look forward to making our nations even more prosperous than ever before. India has never invested before as it is doing now and it is reciprocal. The U.S. is doing the same thing,” Trump said.

“Very soon, India will have access to a very great American product, NBA basketball. Next week, thousands of Indians will gather in Mumbai to watch NBA basketball.

“Am I invited, Mr. Prime Minister? I may come. Be careful, I may come,” he quipped.

No issue is more important than energy security. For the first time ever, the US is No. 1 on Planet Earth in producing oil and natural gas. That means more jobs, higher wages and lower prices at the pump,

Trump said.

Trump said he was thrilled to learn that Indian company Petron has committed to buying millions of tons of LNG from the US. They increase employment in the US and freedom and security in India, he said.

“To keep our nations safe, the U.S. and India are forging greater defense partnerships.

We are looking forward to concluding several defense deals very soon. The US is working on Space Force and it is working closely with India in space cooperation. India and the US will hold the first ever tri-service military exercise called Tiger Trio,” Trump said.

“We are committed to protecting innocent civilians from radical Islamic terrorism,” Trump said. Modi acknowledged this and nodded, while the crowd gave a standing ovation to the statement.

“Both India and the U.S. understand that to keep our communities safe, we must protect our borders. Border security is vital to the US. Border security is vital to India,” said Trump.

Modi clapped in response.

“Illegal immigration is unfair to the millions of legal immigrants who work hard,

pay their taxes and obey our laws. Yet, there are those in Washington who raid your health care to fund those who come here illegally,” Trump said.

“My administration believes our first duty is to the American people. We must always be loyal to African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Indian Americans. We must take care of Indian American citizens first before we take care of illegal immigrants.

Every day, Indian Americans write the story of American greatness. Everyone here today has a crucial part to play in building an even grander and greater American and Indian future,” Trump said.

“To help achieve that exciting vision, we are strengthening our cherished bonds with the nation of India. Together we will strive to deepen our ties, will honor the dignity of our citizens and we will achieve incredible advancement to our people,” he continued.

“The significance of this huge gathering is not limited to mere numbers or arithmetic.

Today we are witnessing the making of new history and the making of a new chemistry too,” Modi said in the early part of his speech.

The energy of NRG is a testimony to the growing synergy between India and the United States of America, he said.

The presence of President Trump and the elected representatives of both the parties, and their words of praise for India reflect their respect for Indians in America and their achievements. “It is a mark of respect for 1.3 billion Indians,” Modi said.

“You asked me Howdy Modi? The question was answered by Modi in a dozen different lndian languages. He then explained to the American audience that all he was saying was “Everything is fine.” That was one of the several lighter moments of an otherwise weighty deliberation.

Modi deliberately used so many languages of India to demonstrate that unity in diversity is integral to Indian democracy. Dozens of languages, and hundreds of dialects have coexisted in perfect harmony. It is not just languages, different sects, dozens of communities, different rituals, worships, and regional cuisines that make India amazing.

Unity in diversity is India’s heritage. “This is the very basis of our vibrant democracy. This is our strength and inspiration.

Wherever we go, we take the values of diversity and democracy,” Modi said.

Modi acknowledged the significant contributions of the Indian American community in the 2019 elections and said “The flag of Indian democracy is now flying high across the world.” The salient features of that election included 80 million first time voters, largest women participation, and the election of the highest number of women.

The 2019 election set another record in that in 60 years,

a government was elected with an absolute majority, completed a 5 year-term and returned to power with even greater majority.

“How did this happen?”

When the audience responded by shouting “Modi, Modi,” he said “No, not because of Modi; it is because of the people of India.”

“We are now impatient for the development of our country, to take the country to new heights in the 21st century.

The buzz word in India is development. The motto is collective effort, inclusive growth. Public participation is big in India. India’s greatest resolve is the creation of a new India. We are not competing against anyone else but with ourselves. We are challenging ourselves. We are changing ourselves,” Modi said.

The mindset that nothing will change in India is being challenged today.

It took seven decades for rural sanitation to reach 38 percent of India. In five years, 110 million toilets have been built. The rural sanitation coverage is now 99 percent.

It took seven decades for cooking gas connections to reach 55 percent. In 5 years it reached 95 percent. Within 5 years, 150 million new gas connections were added.

Rural road connections rose from 55 percent to 95 percent.

In 5 years, over 200,000 km of roads were built in rural areas.

In seven decades, less than 50 percent of the people had bank accounts. Today, nearly 100 percent of families are part of the banking system. Over 370 million bank accounts have been opened in the last five years.

“Data is a new oil today.

Data is the new gold. The entire industry focus is on data.

Do you know which country offers data at the lowest rate in the world? It is India. Today in India, 1 GB of data costs only around 25 to 30 cents. The global average price for 1 GB is 25 to 30 times that price,” Modi said.

The affordable data is new digital India and it has redefined governance in India. About 10,000 state and central government services are available on line. It used to take 3 months to get a

passport in the past. Today it is delivered to homes in less than a week. It used to be difficult to get a visa. Today, the US is one of the biggest users of India’s e-visa facility. The registration of a new company used to take three weeks. Now it is done in 24 hours.

On one day, Aug. 31, five million people filed their tax returns online. Another big achievement is in tax refunds which used to take months.

Now people receive it within a week or 10 days directly in their bank accounts.

“Welfare schemes are essential to a developing country. It is part of building a new India. We have given a lot of importance to welfare as well as to farewell,” Modi played on the words by stating that India will say ‘farewell’ to open defecation during Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary this year. Over 1,500 outdated laws have been given farewell. “One nation, One tax” has come true with the introduction of a nationwide General Sales Tax. “We are setting up a challenge to getting rid of corruption,” Modi said. “In the last 2 to 3 years, we bid farewell to 350,000 shell companies. We have also bid farewell to over 80 million fake names which existed only on paper to get benefits from government schemes. About $20 billion have been saved from going black.”

Modi cleverly introduced the volatile Kashmir issue by teasing that India bid farewell recently to a 70 year-old challenge, namely Art. 370. It gives development and equal rights to the people J & K and Ladakh. The same right given to the rest of India is given to the people of J & K and Ladakh. The discrimination to women and children and underprivileged has been put to an end.

Both Houses of the Parliament of India debated the withdrawal of special status extended by Art. 370 to the state of Jammu and Kashmir and the proceedings were telecast across the world. Though BJP did not have a majority in the Rajya Sabha, both the Houses passed the bill to rescind Art. 370 with a 2/3rd majority.

A hallmark of Modi, a humble bow to the assembly. deserve a standing ovation for this action, he said.

“India’s actions within its boundaries are causing discomfort to some people who are unable to manage their own country. These people have put their hatred of India at the center of their political agenda.

They want unrest. They support and nurture terrorism.

The whole word knows who they are.” He did not utter the name Pakistan.

Whether it is 9/11 in the US or 26/11 in Mumbai, where were these conspirators found, he asked.

“The time has come to fight a decisive battle against terrorism and those who promote terrorism. President Trump is firmly committed to fighting this battle against terrorism. President Trump’s commitment to fight terrorism deserves a standing ovation,” Modi said to the cheering audience.

Today India is not skirting challenges, but dealing with them head on. Instead of incremental changes, it is looking at comprehensive solutions. India has shown it can do things considered impossible before. India has now rolled up its sleeves to become a $5 trillion economy, with its people friendly, development friendly and investor friendly environment, Modi said.

Citing further statistics, India, he said, will spend 1.3 billion on infrastructure. India has attained an average growth rate of 7. 5 percent and is one of the favored destinations for foreign direct investments in the world. From 2014 to 2019, FDI inflow has doubled, Modi said.

Recently, liberalized norms allow for 100 percent foreign investment in single point retail, in coal mining and in contract manufacturing.

Also, American executives at the energy round table on Sept. 21 in Houston were encouraged by India’s decision to reduce the corporate tax rate.

It sent a very positive message to global business dealers as well.

“For Indians in America and for Americans in India, there are unlimited possibilities and opportunities.

This strong growth in America

under Trump’s leadership will give these opportunities new wings,” Modi said and expressed the hope that the ensuing discussions between himself and President Trump will lead to positive results.

“President Trump calls me a tough negotiator. However, he himself is quite an expert in the Art of the Deal. And I am learning quite a lot from him,” Modi said in a lighter vein.

Modi ended his oratory by saying, “We have a common resolve to create new futures for our countries. I would like you, President Trump, to come to India with your family; give us an opportunity to welcome you. The friendship will help us achieve the shared dreams and take our relations to new heights.”

In a surprise turn of events, Modi walked back to Trump and urged him to go around the arena. Trump readily agreed and hand in hand, Modi and Trump concluded the rally with a victory lap.

Earlier, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner welcomed Prime Minister Modi and presented him with a symbolic key to the city.

A 90 minute cultural extravaganza titled “Woven” showcasing India’s diversity and culture preceded the speeches of PM Modi and President Trump.

Commencing with Gurbani hymns by a group from the Sikh community, the cultural program also brought in the Indian American story and the assimilation of the second generation through dances, music, biographical clips and a multimedia show.

Dances and songs from different states of India were performed by about 400 artists from Texas – from the Gujarati garba and raas to the energetic Bhangra, the wellknown Eklo Chalo Bengali song by Rabindranath Tagore to the graceful classical forms like Bharatnatyam in their traditional attire. In all, 27 groups performed in front of a cheering crowd.

Other highlights included a short segment on Yoga, a mix of Indian classical and western instruments, Bollywood songs, gazals and an interesting faceoff between a tap dancer and a classical Kathak dancer.

NEWS Democrats’ dilemma: Congressman Al Green boycotts Trump-Modi summit

By SESHADRI KUMAR Houston area Democratic Congressman Al Green was a no show at the Howdy Modi summit though his name was announced among those attending.

Another Houston area Democrat, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, welcomed Prime Minister Modi, but she left the venue before President Trump arrived.

The only Indian American Congressman, present was Raja Krishnamoorthy, a Democrat from Illinois.

Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, a self-avowed Hindu, had issued a statement welcoming Modi and said she could not attend the summit due to prior commitment. Two other Democrats, Congressmen Ro Khanna and Ami Bhera from California were not present either.

Locally, Fort Bend County Judge KP George, also a Democrat, did not attend the NRG event.

The Howdy Modi organizers showcased him among the American success stories.

A spokesman for George said the County Judge had met the Prime Minister at a private photo session on Saturday night and could not attend the NRG event because he was not feeling well.

Prior to the event, a section of Fort Bend County residents, especially the Paksitani community, had been urging him to

boycott Prime Minister Modi citing his Kashmir policy and human rights violations.

Asked for his comment, George said, “We have so many contributing communities that enrich our cultural, social, and economic fabric.

I met with the Prime Minister of India on Saturday to bolster and strengthen the ties between our jurisdictions and look forward to meeting with other world leaders to invest in the people and economy of Fort Bend County.”

Prime Minister Modi, after addressing an energy round table with a dozen top oil and energy company executives at the Post Oak Hotel, attended a photo session with major donors to the Howdy Modi event and some prominent Indian community groups.

Apparently, George met the Prime Minister at the photo session. It was not an event open to the media.

On Saturday, Congressman Al Green released the following statement announcing his intended absence from the Howdy Modi event.

Green said, “I love my country. I salute the flag and pledge allegiance to justice for all. I believe that no one is above the law. This is why I will continue with the impeachment of President Trump. This is also why, although I will work with this administration on meaningful legislation and substantive issues I will not foster the false

impression that my impeachment fight has ended by attending an event that President Trump may use as a photo op.

It has not ended and will not end as long as Mr. Trump is president.’’

“I will not be there for another photo op with a president who has caged children who believes Haiti and various African nations are ‘s***hole countries, who calls asylees fleeing harm ‘invaders’, who would ban Muslims from the country and transpersons from the military, and who refuses to support gun sense issues that could save lives by reducing the occurrence of hate shootings.... I will not be there with a president who said there were ‘very fine people ‘ among the white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and Ku Klux Klan, men who led the 2017 Charlottesville Unite the Right rally; a president who fuels the flames of hate. I will not be present for a photo op with a president I intend to impeach for his bigoted policies.

“Photo ops won’t end bigotry. Photo ops won’t produce meaningful legislation. If I stand alone on this issue for me, it is better to stand alone than to not stand at all.”

Among the local Republicans, Harris County Commissioner Jack Cagle and Fort Bend County Commissioner Andy Meyers were seen attending the event.

By SESHADRI KUMAR From the global perspective, the Howdy Modi! Community Summit was well done.

But, as the Editor of India Herald, I have a confession to make.

This newspaper is unable to convey all the facets of the event with good pictures and cannot report on what transpired at the NRG Center after the conclusion of the formal event.

Why, you may ask?

The organizers, in their infinite wisdom and for reasons known only to them, put the print media, literally in a box on the eighth floor, with no access to the main floor or the gallery.

Reporters had to rely on small TV screens hanging over their head to witness the speeches. The speeches of the prime minister and the president were not broadcast on the giant screens.

This lack of access inconvenienced not only the local ethnic newspapers, but other newspaper correspondents, both local and those visiting including PTI correspondents.

At the same time, local radio station representatives and some other people with the right connections were allowed to sit on the VIP section on the floor and then allowed to join the community lun-

cheon.

I am not complaining that there was no lunch, but I am aggrieved at the indiscriminate blackout.

On top of it, the prime minister reportedly unveiled plaques for the Eternal Gandhi Museum, Gujarati Samaj Event Center and Sri Siddhivinayak Temple.

Should not the Houston community at large be informed of these events?

The status of the print media was so uncertain that the parking pass and registration letter were emailed on Saturday, an hour before the Prime Minister landed in Houston. There was no warning about the coverage restrictions.

The print media was asked to come at 5 a.m. and then the press credentials were given in the parking lot.

The volunteers, looking at the list, gave some people green stickers, some blue, some yellow and some got a wristband, apparently for the VIP luncheon.

The print media was told there is breakfast on the 8th floor and they should stay on that floor. Of course, they could use the restrooms nearby, but could not go to the galleries to mingle with the crowds.

It reminded me of the pilgrimage to the Balaji Temple in the hill

town of Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh in India.

Millions of people, ordinary devotees, have to stand in line for several hours to have a glimpse of the deity. The devotees willingly did it because of their faith and devotion and the darshan is free.

There is a parallel line, with much less waiting time for those who can afford to pay.

At the Howdy Modi! event, there were thousands of people who took the pains to have a glimpse of the prime minister and the president and of course, there was no cost to it. Then, those who paid or had influence attended the VIP luncheon.

The local print media was left in the lurch. It could not join the devotees having ‘free darshan’ or attend the ‘VIP luncheon.’

People began arriving even before 6 a.m. and the formal program ended around 1.45 p.m.

Thousands of people were made to leave the center through a couple of exits and walk about a mile to get to the parking lots across a foot bridge over Kirby.

While the entry was well organized, the exit was chaotic and many elderly people and people with wheel chairs had difficulty due to the restricted exit.

Hoyer alludes to secular democracy, pluralism, human rights and unfulfilled promises House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, a Democrat serving as U.S. Representative for Maryland’s 5th Congressional District was the designated speaker representing the U.S. House of Representatives at the ‘Howdy Modi!’ summit.

In his speech welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Houston, Hoyer said, “Mr. Prime Minister, I bring greetings from the Congress and from the speaker Nancy Pelosi.”

Hoyer’s speech was markedly different as he invoked the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and the socialism of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, whose legacy is being dismantled by Prime Minister Modi’s Bharatiya Janata party.

Hoyer said “We have come here for the same purpose, to celebrate the partnership between India and America. Two democracies committed to the same vision of the future. That vision is based on the common hopes and the shared dreams of our people. Both nations are shaped by the legacy of British Colonialism. Both nations, deeply cognizant of the price of freedom.

We hold the same truce to be self-evident and believe that all are created equal. A vision yet to be realized in either of our nations completely.”

He quoted Mahatma Gandhi, who once defined democracy as, ‘something that gives the weak the same chance as the strong’.

India and America have maintained their relationship to be bipartisan with both Democrats and Republicans working to bring the two countries together in pursuance to our common goal.

Hoyer cited former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama for the strong Indo-U.S. ties and he said Trump is continuing that tradition.

Hailing Modi, Hoyer said, “We are inspired by the modern India he leads and mindful of the challenges that he faces. Undeterred as he reaches into the new frontier of space and equally determined to lift millions out of poverty. A large number of people headed to the Hillcroft area Indian restaurants for lunch and reached there around 3 p.m. but had to wait for 45 minutes to an hour in front of the restaurants before getting seated.

The irony of all this is that a couple of weeks ago when this newspaper carried a positive story about Indian Muslims supporting the Howdy Modi, Modi-haters called the newspaper a mouthpiece of RSS. It appears RSS sympathizers do not see the paper that way. Then, why would they ignore this community newspaper’s contribution for the last 25 years?

Modi wins hearts and trust of Kashmiri Pandits

By Seema Hakhu Kachru Houston, Sep 24 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi has won the hearts and trust of the Kashmiri Pandits in the US when he emphathised with them and said “you have suffered a lot” during his meeting with a delegation from the community here.

Several Kashmiri Pandits settled in Houston and various parts of the US flew in to be present at the “Howdy, Modi!” event here on Sunday.

The prime minister met the Kashmiri Pandit community on the sidelines of the mega diaspora event also attended by Us President Donald Trump.

“For the first time in over 70 years of India’s Independence and after 30 years of the mass exodus and ethnic cleansing, a prime minister of India has expressed concern and willingness to address issues about the Kashmiri Pandit community who have been refugees in their own land,” said Shakun Malik, president of the oldest US-based nonprofit sociocultural organisation Kashmiri Overseas Association (KOA).

“The KOA has a mission to promote and preserve Kashmiri Pandit heritage and to provide financial assistance to the needy and deserving Kashmiri Pandits, educational institutions and places of worship,” she said.

Malik said the efforts of the KOA and other like-minded groups were being countered by ill-informed press persons and other entities.

“There has been a tremendous amount of confusion, misinformation, and fear being spread by rumour-mongers and ill-informed press persons about Article 370. Therefore our recent stand has been to educate and bring facts before the people about Kashmir,” she said.

To that end, the Kashmiri Pandits have planned a Congressional briefing on October 16 and ‘The View from Our Eyes’, a KOA symposium on Kashmir, on October 19.

Malik said the presence of the Kashmiri Pandits delegates -- seven women and eight men from different organisations working for the cause of Kashmiri Pandits -- in the prime minister’s meeting list during his busy schedule in Houston was a major victory for them.

“The Kashmiri refugee community has been living under sub-human conditions for the last 30 years and it is time the government to create conditions conducive for the return to their roots with honour, dignity, and security.

We feel that the abrogation of Article 370 and turning Jammu and Kashmir into union territories were the first important steps in that

direction,” Malik said.

The prime minister told us “this is the beginning of ‘Naya Kashmir’ process” and requested for our community’s support on all government decisions and endeavours relating to Kashmir, she said.

“With abrogation of Article 370, (people of) Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh have got equal rights as rest of India.

Article 370 had kept people of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh away from development and progress,” Malik quoted the prime minister as saying during the meet.

On the occasion, KOA secretary Amrita Kar presented Modi with messages from members of their community and explained to him

illustrations from Kashmiri poetess Arnimal.

“Going through some of the messages in Hindi, his (Modi) face lit up and exclaimed ‘arrey wah’ (awesome) and ‘bahut achha kaam kiya’ (very well done),” Kar said.

Meanwhile, Malik told PTI that her association will be soon be forwarding a list of suggestions to the Prime Minister’s Office, including the establishment of a task force to develop a road map for the survival of the community in the newly established union territories, relaxing the age limit for government jobs for migrants for the next 10 years.

Further, the Kashmiri Pandits hoped an university will be established to preserve and

promote their heritage and culture, Kar said.

Meanwhile, some Kashmiris who attended the ‘Howdy, Modi’ event were disappointed that the prime minister did not use their language to say “everything is fine”, an expression which he said in eight other Indian languages to showcase the country’s vibrant democracy.

“Did he forget Kashmiri?” wondered a Kashmiri spectator who was waiting for Modi to say it in Kashmiri.

Noting that Modi talked about the revocation of the special status given to Jammu and Kashmir, another Kashmiri community member said, “To the disappointment of many Kashmiris, the prime minister

didn’t say, ‘Sorueye Chu Theek’, meaning ‘everything is fine’ in Kashmiri.”

Addressing over 50,000-strong audience at the mega diaspora event at the NRG stadium on Sunday, Modi said, “Because you’ve asked ‘Howdy Modi!’, my response is everything is fine in India.”

He then went on to reiterate the sentiment in Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Odia, and underlined that India’s many languages are the identity of the country’s liberal and democratic society.

Statement from Alliance for Justice and Accountability “We are a bona fide group of Indian Americans with roots in India, and not connected with any other nationality or separatist causes,” the AJA said in a statement released here on Saturday.

“We have one and only one agenda: to expose the undemocratic, anti-people and anti-minorities agenda of Mr. Modi’s government and BJP party.”

The AJA comprises Hindu, Muslim, Dalit, Sikh and Christian groups, among others. They include the Hindus for Human Rights (HfHR), a progressive Hindu group that opposes Hindutva; the Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC); and the Organization for Minorities of India.

“We are horrified that our religion...is being hijacked by extremists and nationalists who are lynching Muslims, trampling on democracy and law and order, and arresting if not murdering those who are speaking out,” said Sunita Viswanath, co-founder of Hindus for Human Rights.

Several U.S.-based civil rights organizations have announced they will also join AJA’s protests. These include Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Black Lives Matter.

The AJA protest focused on the Indian government’s brutal crackdown in Jammu and Kashmir, where thousands of Kashmiri Muslims, including children, have been incarcerated; hundreds have been tortured by the police and Indian soldiers; and a communications blackout has been imposed.

Make Howdy Modi Event historic, promote unity in diversity among Indo-Americans

By BHAMY V. SHENOY In the late 1960’s there was just one association to represent Indians in Houston. It was India students association located in University of Houston. All activities, celebrations, functions, movies, music, and dance programs of Indian interests were conducted by ISA displaying unity in diversity.

Today there must be more than 100 associations connected with and managed by Indians in Houston. In less than sixty years how did such a big bang explosion take place to lose unity in diversity, India’s greatest civilizational contribution?

Now that Modi’s historic visit to Houston has taken place, it may be useful to reflect on this phenomenon and to discuss how we can use this occasion to bring unity in Indo-Americans from Houston.

Houston had a similar occasion when India Culture Center (ICC) played host to to former PM Rajiv Gandhi on June 15,1985. Today most have forgotten his visit. PM Narasimha Rao’s Houston visit in 1994 is also just a footnote. Neither the talk by Modi nor by Trump is likely to be long remembered and thus Modi’s visit may be forgotten like the previous two.

Let us go back to the early 70s.

When millions of Bangladeshis came as refugees to India in 1971, it was ISA which took the lead to raise funds.

In 1972 when Idi Amin threw Indians from Uganda, the United

Nations approached ISA to help settle some of them in Houston.

Today if there is such a problem affecting Indians, we have many Indian associations to take up the cause. In one way, it is a good thing, but what is the overarching association to represent all Indians? Whom should media contact?

Recently when President Trump gave a call to four congress women “to go home from where they came”, Indo-Americans should have been active to defuse the issue (not confront him, but use Gandhian satyagraha), but there was no Indo-American association to take up the cause in Houston.

In today’s totally different environment of the vibrant Houston Indo-American community, four different associations like Hindus of Greater Houston (HGH), ICC, Indo-American Political Action Committee (IAPAC) and India House could have organized the Howdy Modi event. We were still forced to organize a new association Texas India Forum (TIF) to host the event. TIF has accomplished the task with flying colors.

By any criterion it was a great task.

None of these associations could work as options. ICC has the least number of members, HGH is not inclusive enough, India House has only donors as members, and IAPAC takes part only in political activities. TIF has succeeded in getting the cooperation of just about every Indo-American association. It may be useful to explore

how TIF can bring about unity among Indo-Americans where others did not succeed.

In the late 80s, I had posed a provocative question: are there Indians in Houston? This was because at that time, ICC was one of the smallest associations although it represented the interests of all Indians. In the book, “Political Tribes” by Amy Chua, she has argued that humans are tribal and they would like to form groups.

Group identities like ethnic, religious, sectarian, etc., drive people to kill and die for. It may be such tribal identities driving the formation of several Indo-American associations today. However I hasten to write that not because of the crude ways discussed by Chua to explain the victory of President Trump.

In some ways, Indian immigrants are no different than the ones from Europe. When European immigrants from different countries like Ireland, Italy, Poland, Russia came here, they lived in their own localities. However in the melting pot of the US, these communities soon lost their identity. Indian communities do not seem to show any such sign even among the second generation.

India has states with different languages and different festivities.

Indians have different religions, sects and philosophies. Despite such mind boggling diversity giving rise to a “tribal identity” problem, India has remained a vibrant

democracy. In Houston, we have a different situation. In the mid 60s, the total number of Indians in Houston was less than 500 and it was a closely knit community despite our vastly different backgrounds. We were all Indians. Today we have about 150,000 IndoAmericans divided into several groups and ICC, which has been playing an umbrella role in this existential problem.

Despite having such a large number of organizations, could we still try for unity in diversity?

TIF along with ICC, HGH, India House, and IAPAC should consider playing such a role after organizing the Howdy Modi event.

Many who have visited Madurodam near Hague and Taman Mini near Jakarta must have been impressed with how the architects are able to give a glimpse of Holland and Indonesia.

Can India House try to achieve the same in the second phase (they may need a larger area than they have planned now) by identifying and housing the attractive features of every Indian state. I am sure the tourism department of India would be happy to collaborate on such a project.

Such a scheme of mini India in this second phase can be a big attraction as has happened with Madurodam and Taman Mini. TIF taking up such a project will certainly promote unity in diversity.

Those who saw the enchanting dance performance by different

groups during Howdy Modi and got selfies taken with ‘Modi” in front of colorful art work of different states must have been wonderstruck by “incredible India” has to offer.

India is getting ready to transform its education system imposed during colonial times to produce clerks by Macaulay by implementing a New Education Policy.

Houston Indians with hundreds of highly qualified retired professionals can play a critical role in its implementation. TIF can help India’s government to tap into such a Indian brain bank.

TIF can revive the idea of “India Week” to show Houstonians how India’s diversity neutralizes to some extent racial divisiveness and demonstrates India’s civilizational message of unity in diversity. However, to achieve such a grandiose design we need visionary leaders and support from the entire Indian community.

We have both in Houston.

Look at the generosity of Indians in supporting such mega NGOs like Pratham (Houston gave birth to Pratham USA), Akshaya Patra, Ekal, and Shankar Netralaya as well as scores of temples, churches, mosques, and Gurudwaras.

If Howdy Modi’s event gives impetus to TIF to take up the ambitious task of bringing unity in diversity among Indo-Americans, then Modi’s visit to Houston will indeed become historic.

Starting with Saveri raga Varnam by Kotthavaasal Venkatrama Iyer “Sarasuda ninne Kori”, Uma Gomathi observes ” Specialty of the varnam is that the “Vadi” & :Samvadi” components are used as swara akshara in the charanam,“Daa(D) ni pai nenaru(Ri)na Ee vela”.

Her presentation of ‘Mahaganapathae’ in Natanarayani raga was a sparkling presentation. Begada alapana was short, but very imaginative, brilliant & beautiful.

The composition that followed was Ganarasamudan in Roopaka Thala, a composition of Sri Papanasam Sivan.

There is no better way to describe the presentation of swarakalpana than the chosen phrase ‘manam kulira madhuramozhugu gaanarasamudan’ for the starting point of swarakalpana.”

Dr. Lakshmi Srivaths comments on Kruthi Bhat’s rendition, “Brovavamma” in the heavy-set raga Manji, which transported the audience to a meditative mood, when Kruthi traversed and explored the musical and mystical beauty of the majestic krithi! “ The main Ragam of the evening rendition was Khambhoji and the chosen song was “O Ranga Sayee “composed by Saint Thyagaraja.

The rendition of the Abhang ‘Abeer Gulal’ in Teen Taal in a composition of Saint Chokha in Mishra Bhoop, Kruthi”s impeccable diction and the perfect voice modulation was an enriched addition. Another highlight of Kruthi’s concert was Ragam Tanam Pallavi in Raga Hindolam, in Khanda Triputa Tala and composed by Rajarajeshwary Bhat.

Kruthi’s presentation of the Pallavi, “Samagana lolanae shiva shankaranae ennai kath arulvai,” was remarkable with Ragamalika swaras that was brilliantly choreographed by her mother with adaptability to match her innate musical talent.

The kalpanswaras in the Ragam Hindolam, Sunadavinodini, Surya and Chandrakauns were elaborate. Kruthi’s meticulous handling of notes precisely and perfectly came out effortlessly that illustrated her superb talent.

The Thillana Composition of Lalgudi Gopala Iyer “Nandagopa Balane” in Kapi raga was soothingly presented before the conclusion of the concert with Sri Thayagaraja’s Mangalam in Saurashtram.

Sewa gala raises $300,000 for “Helping Every Life Prosper”

Sewa International Houston celebrated another year of service with a spectacular gala held at the Stafford Center on Sunday, Sept. 8th.

The theme of the gala was H.E.L.P: Helping Every Life Prosper. It brought together more than 600 people who celebrated Sewa’s continued engagement in community service over 16 years and pledged to support Sewa initiatives through all the means they can.

The fundraising gala met the target of $300,000.

President of Sewa International Houston Chapter, Gitesh Desai, welcomed the guests highlighting the work done by Sewa beyond the boundaries of race, religion and nationality.

Desai emphasized the need to “join together and donate our time, talent and treasure as a means of service, a pathway to evolve our better self which in turn will realize a more productive and progressive, hopeful and peaceful world.”

Petronet LNG signs $2.5 bn deal to take stake in US LNG plant

At present, state-owned GAIL India Ltd has 20-year LNG contracts to buy 5.8 million tonnes per year of US LNG, split between Dominion Energy Inc’s Cove Point plant and Cheniere Energy Inc’s Sabine Pass facility in Louisiana.

New Delhi: Petronet LNG Ltd, India’s biggest liquefied natural gas importer, has signed a preliminary deal to buy a stake in Tellurian Inc’s proposed Driftwood project in Louisiana and import 5 million tonnes a year of LNG. The deal is worth about USD 2.5 billion, sources privy to the development said.

“Tellurian Inc. and Petronet LNG Ltd announced (September 21) that the two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) wherein Petronet and its affiliates intend to negotiate the purchase of up to five million tonnes per annum (5 mtpa) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Driftwood, concurrent with its equity investment, which remains subject to further due diligence and approval of its board of directors,” the US firm said in a statement.

Tellurian and Petronet will endeavour to finalise the transaction agreements by March 31 2020, it said.

The firm’s President and CEO Meg Gentle said, “Petronet, India’s largest LNG importer, will be able to deliver clean, lowcost, and reliable natural gas to India from Driftwood.”

The Driftwood project includes natural gas production, gathering, processing, and transportation facilities, along with Driftwood LNG, a proposed 27.6 mtpa liquefaction export facility that will be located near Lake Charles, Louisiana on the US Gulf Coast.

In April, the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) issued the order granting authorisation for Driftwood LNG and the 96-mile Driftwood Pipeline, which will inter-connect the LNG terminal to the US natural gas market.

Petronet and Tellurian had first signed a broader agreement in February.

India is targeting to raise share of natural gas in its energy basket to 15 per cent by 2030 from 6.2 per cent currently and is expanding its pipeline network and building new LNG import terminals to encourage use of the cleaner fuel.

Tellurian is offering an equity interest in Driftwood Holdings, which comprises Tellurian’s upstream company, its pipeline and the upcoming terminal in return for commitment to offtake gas.

Trump announces trade deal with India, urges talks with Pakistan

India and the United States will sign a trade deal, announced President Donald Trump on Tuesday at the beginning of a bilateral meeting with Indian team led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Answering questions from the media, Mr. Trump urged Mr. Modi and Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to meet for “good outcome” on Kashmir. “We will have a trade deal soon We will have a bigger trade deal down the road,” said the US President in his comments before the bilateral talks held on the sidelines of the UNGA meeting.

The comments however revealed that the US desires India and Pakistan to resolve the current stand off over Kashmir through negotiations. “As Prime Minister Modi and Prime minister Khan meet and get to know each other a lot of fruitful and peaceful things can be expected,” said Mr. Trump. He had asked both Indian and Pakistan to hold dialogue during his meeting with Imran Khan held on Monday. Despite repeated questions President Trump however remained noncommittal about targeting cross border terrorism from Pakistan and said “You have a great Prime Minister and he will take care of that.” Mr. Trump emphasized wants Iran on top of the states that sponsor terrorism. Responding to the U.S. President, Mr. Modi said, “Trump is a very good friend of India.” The Prime Minister said: “Thank President Trump for being at Houston ftom the bottom of my heart. India and U.S. are close friends and our principle-based friendship will go ahead. $60 billion trade and 50k jobs will come from Petronet deal.” On the bigger deal mentioned by Mr. Trump, Mr. Modi said, “We will have a bigger deal down the road. But very soon we will have a trade deal.”

PM pushes to strengthen FATF as Imran calls blacklist part of India’s ‘agenda’

Institutional mechanisms against terrorism like UN Security Council (UNSC) sanctions and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) listings must not be “politicised”, urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a special session on extremism and terrorism at the world body, in comments that appeared to be aimed at China and Pakistan.

“Prime Minister Modi said terrorists should not be allowed to get funds and arms,” Gitesh Sarma, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs, told journalists. “For this objective to be realised, we need to avoid politicisation of mechanisms like UN listings and the FATF,” Mr. Sharma quoted Mr. Modi as saying.

Mr. Modi was speaking at the “Leaders’ Dialogue on Strategic Responses to Terrorist and Violent Extremist Narratives”, held on the sidelines of the 74th UN General Assembly session on Monday.

The meeting was organised by Jordan, France and New Zealand, and attended by leaders of about 24 countries, but did not include either China or Pakistan.

Earlier in the day, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan referred to India’s efforts as part of a concerted plan against his country. “We found India was pushing to blacklist us at FATF, and we realised they have an agenda,” he said at the Council for Foreign Relations.

Mr. Modi’s reference to UNSC listings comes months after China finally withdrew its veto on the sanctions listing of Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar, something Beijing had opposed for more than a decade.

The reference to the FATF is significant, as the global body to counter terror financing will meet in November this year to decide on whether Pakistan should be ‘blacklisted’ for its failure to take credible action.

China has assumed the presidency of the group that works by consensus, and India has been keen to see Pakistan, which is on the FATF ‘grey list’ at present, face stricter financial scrutiny till it stops terror groups listed by the UNSC from operating there.

This limited package is likely to be accompanied by the announcement that negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will begin. Mr. Trump went further than he normally does for visiting heads of government and spoke at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Howdy Modi’ diaspora rally in Houston on Sunday. Larger issues for the U.S. like India’s policies and laws around data mobility and FDI in e-commerce are outside the scope of the current discussions, but remain major challenges between the two trading partners.

“When President Trump and PM Modi met last they had a broad understanding that the issues on trade must be resolved quickly, and those discussions are ongoing,” MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said on Monday night, without divulging details.

The U.S. has wanted changes in regulations in these areas — removal of price caps (‘Trade Margin Rationalization’ or TMR on medical devices) for medical devices, further cuts in tariffs for ICT and greater access for dairy products and some other categories of agricultural goods, more than one source told The Hindu.

Specifically, there is a discussion around India making a commitment to revisit current price controls on medical devices within a certain period of time, if not an immediate release of these caps. The U.S. wants India to scrap the 20% tariffs that exist on ICT goods.

For India, there is likely to be a partial reinstatement of preferential market access to U.S. markets under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) program, which was revoked for India after June 5. Representations from the domestic medical device and dairy industries had been partly why USTR initiated a GSP review.

The reinstatement will be partial, because India is not likely to release price caps on medical devices. India has also been cautious about further liberalizing the ICT sector as it fears that markets will be flooded by Chinese goods. The trade package is also likely to see market access for some Indian agricultural products (such as table grapes and pomegranates). In areas where there is already market access for India, the U.S. is likely to enhance facilitation of processes. For instance, a certification of irradiation facilities in India for fruit before they are sent to the United States. The limited trade deal could fall through at the last minute, but the finish line is within sight, a source with knowledge of the proceedings had told The Hindu last week. The source also added that if Mr. Goyal came to the U.S., it signified that some sort of agreement was all the more likely.

Indian Left reacts

The Left parties on Monday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying his “virtually campaigning” for President Donald Trump at the “Howdy, Modi!” event was “strange” and “unprecedented”.

“In India we never allow any foreigner to campaign in our domestic elections, and our PM is going there and virtually campaigning for President Trump and raising the same slogan used in India — as Abki baar Trump ki Sarkar. This is something that’s unprecedented,” CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury told presspersons.

“An Indian PM campaigning for the US President? Our PM has become the election campaigner for Trump, that is the outcome of ‘Howdy,Modi’,” snickered CPI general secretary D Raja.

CPI(M) leader Md Salim said while the US is allowing one per cent of its population of NRI Indians to gather and meet their leader, Modi was denying such rights to the people of Kashmir.

“While US gov gives liberty to 1% of its population to meet & greet their leader, Modi has not only locked down Kashmiris but also their leaders. I’m waiting for these KPs to denounce their US citizenship & move back to Kashmir to realise what it feels to live in “normalcy” (sic)” he tweeted tagging a photo of the PM meeting a delegation of Kashmiri Pandits (KPs) in the US. Salim also tagged a photo of protestors outside the event’s venue.

“The people are using the hashtag #AdiosModi to ask Modi to go back and serve up answers on what was happening in Kashmir which was still under lockdown. The crowd is a diverse gathering of Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims and Christians,” he tweeted.

Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat at a meeting on Tuesday with 80 journalists representing 50 organisations from over 30 countries said the RSS was against all forms of violence and in a specific comment on incidents of lynching said the organisation would “disown any swayamsewak found guilty of such an act”. It was an interaction that lasted over two and a half hours and covered topics ranging from the recent abrogation of the special status of J&K to homosexuality and caste-based reservations.

The interaction was restricted to foreign journalists and Mr. Bhagwat was accompanied by RSS second in command Suresh (Bhaiyyaji) Joshi, joint general secretaries Manmohan Vaidya, Krishan Gopal, northern region incharge Bajran Lal Gupt and its Delhi unit head Kulbhushan Ahuja.

“This interaction was part of the continuous process where the ‘Sarsanghchalak’ [chief] engages in constructive dialogue with people from different walks of society,” said an official statement put out by the RSS. While the statement did not go into the content of the discussion, sources present at the meeting said it covered almost all aspects of contemporary discourse.

Mr. Bhagwat reportedly told his audience that the abrogation of J&K’s special status would help “integrate” the people with the rest of India, and added that whatever fears they had about loss of land and jobs should be allayed.

He also came out in strong support of the proposed Citizenship Amendment Bill saying Hindus had no place of succour other than India. The Bill proposes to grant citizenship to those people hailing from the Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Parsi religions who were fleeing persecution from India’s neighbouring countries.

Mr. Bhagwat advised the journalists to “believe in what you see” and not to judge the RSS on the basis of propaganda, adding that the RSS was working everyday to demolish propaganda against itself. Much of what he spoke of, including that the organisation views homosexuality as a “variation” rather than an abnormality, had been mentioned by Mr. Bhagwat in his three- day lecture series at the Vigyan Bhawan last year. He did however briefly comment on the handling of the economy, albeit after a declaration that he was “no expert” but that there was “no paralysis as under the 10 years of UPA” and that the rest of it was part of a process.

The meeting started with a brief introduction given by Mr. Bhagwat followed by a question-andanswer session covering a wide range of issues across the spectrum, according to the statement.

STORY OF MAHATMA GANDHI

Dandi Salt Satyagraha stirs nation

In 1924, Gandhi fell ill. He was suffering from appendicitis and was in great pain. The government was alarmed. What would happen if Gandhi died in prison? An urgent operation was arranged, and Gandhi agreed. The operation was successful, but his recovery was very slow. The government thought it best to release him, so he was set free. He went to Juhu, near Bombay, for recovery. Read on:

Congress leaders were thinking of participating in the Municipal and Provincial Councils which Gandhi had advised them to boycott. Gandhi was not dismayed or discouraged. He decided to leave politics for the time being and spend his time in bringing about Hindu-Muslim unity and the removal of untouchability.

So for nearly six years Gandhi had little to do with politics. But he wrote, he lectured, and he prayed. He travelled all over India. His influence among the people was steadily growing.

Gandhi had not given up the idea of nonviolent resistance to British rule. He was merely waiting for the right moment.

Jawaharlal Nehru joined Gandhi in many of his travels.

Everywhere they were greeted with great enthusiasm. Nehru was the hope of the younger generation. In 1928 the Viceroy invited Gandhi to see him. He informed Gandhi of the appointment of an official British Commission, led by Sir John Simon, which would study Indian conditions and recommend political reforms.

“Will there be any Indians on the Commission?” asked Gandhi.

“No,” replied the Viceroy.

“That is absurd,” said Gandhi.

“We must boycott it.” Gandhi advised the people to boycott the Simon Commission, and when it arrived in Bombay a hartal (strike) was observed all over India. On its tour through the Indian cities the Commission was greeted with black-flag demonstrations. The people shouted, “Simon, go back!”

At many places there were cane charges and shooting. The same year the peasants of Bardoli, in Gujarat, were agitated by the enhancement of land taxes.

Gandhi studied their grievances and advised them to resort to satyagraha and not pay taxes. But they must be nonviolent, he insisted. Vallabhbhai Patel took charge of organizing the resistance.

The government tried all its usual measures to terrorize the people, but had to climb down. An enquiry into the grievances was ordered. Vallabhbhai demanded certain concessions. Negotiations were going on when Gandhi arrived in Bardoli. Within a short period the government came to terms with the organizers and a settlement was reached.

Now political tension again gained momentum. People everywhere were preparing for a mass struggle.

The Viceroy called a meeting of the Indian leaders. He made

Gandhi wanted an immediate plan for the framing of the Constitution. “Gentlemen,” the Viceroy said, “I have no power to promise such things.”

Everybody then realized that England was still marking time and was not really willing to part with power. A new determination to force the government to act filled the minds of the people.

Jawaharlal Nehru was elected President of the Congress at the instance of Gandhi. A Congress session was held in Lahore on December 31, 1929. A resolution announcing that full independence was India’s goal was passed at this session of the Congress. Disappointed at her failure to get dominion status, India now demanded full independence.

The whole country was excited. Everybody was waiting for the lead from Gandhi. After two months of suspense, a Salt Satyagraha was announced by Gandhi.

This would be the beginning of a civil disobedience campaign in which laws made by the State would be broken. Civil disobedience would begin by breaking the salt law. “Salt suddenly became a mysterious word, a word of power,” Nehru said.

The government had put an excise tax on salt which brought an enormous amount of money to the treasury . Moreover, the government had the monopoly of manufacturing salt.

The salt tax was to be attacked and the salt laws were to be broken. The very simplicity of Gandhi’s choice made the issue more dramatic.

On March 2, 1930, Gandhi wrote a long letter to the new Viceroy, Lord Irwin, about the deplorable condition of India under British rule.

“British rule,” he said, has impoverished the dumb millions by a

system of progressive exploitation, and by a ruinously expensive military and civil administration which the country can never afford. It has reduced us politically to serfdom. It has sapped the foundations of our culture.”

He requested the Viceroy to see him and discuss the matter with him in person.

“But if you cannot see your way to deal with these evils,” he went on, “and my letter makes no appeal to your heart, on the eleventh day of this month I shall proceed, with such co-workers of the ashram as I can take, to disregard the provisions of the salt laws. “It is, I know, open to you to frustrate my design by arresting me. I hope there will be tens of thousands ready, in a disciplined manner, to take up the work after me.”

Lord Irwin did not answer Gandhi but sent a message through his secretary expressing regret that Gandhi had chosen a course which involved breaking the law of the land and which would be a danger to public peace.

The whole of India was agitated over Gandhi’s Salt Satyagraha. On March 12, at 6.30 in the morning, thousands of people watched as Gandhi started from his ashrama with 78 volunteers on a march to Dandi, a village on the sea coast 241 miles away.

There, it was announced, the salt law would be broken. Gandhi led the march through village after village, stopping at each place to talk to the peasants and advise them on the necessity of social reforms.

For twenty-four days the eyes of India and the world followed Gandhi as he marched towards the sea. The government did not take the risk of arresting Gandhi.

With each passing day the campaign grew. Hundreds and thousands of people joined the procession. Men, women, and children lined the route, offering flowers and shouting slogans for the victory of the march.

Newspaper reporters from every corner of the world were there to report the progress of Gandhi’s march. The salt march ended on April 5 at Dandi village. Gandhi and his selected followers went to the sea shore and broke the salt law by picking up salt left on the shore by the sea.

Gandhi then gave a signal to all Indians to break the salt law and prepare to resist the police action in a nonviolent manner.

Potato-Pumpkin parathas

Ingredients: 1 large potato, 1 big chunk pumpkin, 2 green chillies, 1" ginger, 1/2 cup cilantro, chopped fine; 1 cup kootu flour, 1/2 cup singhara flour, 1/4 cup yogurt, salt, oil to shallow fry.

Method: Run ginger and chillies in mixie to crush finely. Grate potato and pumpkin into a bowl of cold salted water. Take flours in a deep bowl. Make a well in centre, put coriander. Press out water from grated veggies completely. Add in centre, with chilliginger. Add salt, mix everything into an even batter. Add some water if required. Batter must be thick enough to spread on nonstick pan. Keep aside for 30 minutes.

Heat 1 tbsp. oil, add to batter, mix well. Heat nonstick tawa or flat pan. Pour one ladleful batter in centre. Spread to form a pancake, thin as possible. Allow to cook, drizzle with some oil. Roast further till crisp. Serve hot with pickle or chutney. Variations: Pancakes can be varied widely, by adding toasted rajgiri, soaked granules of sabudana, grated coconut,etc.

Navratri Raita

Ingredients: 1 sweet potato, boiled, chopped; 1 potato, boiled, chopped; 1 cucumber, chopped; 4-5 waterchestnuts (singhara), boiled, peeled & chopped; 1 cup fresh thick yogurt, 1 tbsp. cilantro, finely chopped; 1 small green chilli, finely chopped; 1 tbsp. roasted peanuts, 1/2 tsp. cumin seed powder, 1/2 tsp. cumin seeds whole, salt and sugar to taste, 1 tsp. oil.

Method: Beat yogurt in a deep salad bowl. Add cumin powder, salt, sugar, chilli, mix well. Add all prepared vegetables, peanuts, mix to blend well. Chill well till required. Heat oil in a small crucible, or tempering spoon. Add cumin seeds, allow to splutter. Pour sizzling tempering over raitha. Garnish with chopped coriander.

Note: To save a lot of time in chilling raithas, chilled prepared ingredients well ahead of time. Minimum time will be required in then preparing them for serving.

Raw banana subji

Ingredients: 2 raw bananas, 1 stalk curry leaves, 1 tsp. cilantro, chopped fine; 1 green chilli, slit; 1/ 2 tsp. cumin seeds, 1/4 tsp. turmeric powder, 1/2 tsp. arrowroot powder, 1 tbsp. yogurt, 1 tsp. lemon juice, salt, 1 tbsp. oil.

Method: Put plenty of water in a bowl. Add a tsp. of salt. Peel and immediately chop bananas to pieces. Let pieces fall into salted water, or they will discolor. Put some water to boil drain and add banana to boiling water. Add a pinch of turmeric, allow to boil till pieces are tender but not mushy.

Drain and keep aside to cool a little. Sprinkle yogurt, turmeric, salt over banana, mix gently. Heat oil in a heavy pan, add cumin and curry leaves, allow to splutter. Add banana pieces, stirring gently. Add 1/4 cup water, cover and simmer for 2-3 mts. Sprinkle arrowroot powder, lemon juice stir to blend.

Garnish with cilantro, serve hot.

Raw Banana Cutlet

Ingredients: 2 raw bananas, 2 medium potatoes, 4 green chillies, 1 tsp dry mango powder (amchur), salt, 2 tbsp bread crumbs (or suji), 1 tbsp oil.

Method: Peel raw bananas and potatoes. Steam them in pressure cooker for about 5 minutes on low flame. Cut green chilies in very small pieces. Mash steamed bananas and potatoes and add dry mango powder, salt and green chilies to it. Mix well. Make small flat rolls of the mixture. If the mixture sticks, apply little oil to hands.

Dip the rolls in the bread crumbs or suji. Heat oil and shallow fry the rolls. Serve with tomato sauce.

Serves 2. time: 30 mts.

Dal Dhokli

Ingredients for Dhokli: 1 cup wheat flour, 1/4 cup besan, 2 tbsp oil, 1/2 tsp chilli powder, 1/4 tsp turmeric powder, salt to taste.

For Dal: 1 cup tuvar dal, 2 tbsp oil or ghee, 1 tsp mustard seeds, 1 tsp cumin, 2 tbsp peanuts, 3 green chillies, a few curry leaves, 1 tsp chilli powder, 2 tsp coriander powder, 1 tsp cumin powder, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, 1/4 tsp hing, salt, 1 tbsp ghee, fistful of chopped cilantro.

Method: Roll out the dhokli dough into thin rounds and cut into diamond shapes. When the dal begins to boil, add the dhoklis , stirring well to prevent the dhoklis from sticking to each other. Lower the flame and simmer covered for 8-10 minutes. Transfer to a serving dish and pour melted ghee and sprinkle cilantro on top. Serve hot.
