Diwali-Dussehra at Constellation Field Diwali has become a familiar word throughout the world as this festival is recognized as one of the largest Indian festivals depicting ‘Victory of Good Over Evil’, ‘ Light over Darkness’, ‘Hope over Despair’ and all the goodness of human beings.

The word Diwali traditionally known as Deepawali, translates to “a series of lamps.”

Diwali is also called the ‘Festival of Lights’ because homes and work places are adorned with lights and lamps similar to what we see during Christmas in the United States.

This festival is celebrated joyfully by people of every religion and by each member of the family right from babies in arms to elders in wheel chairs.

Durga Puja at Houston Durgabari

By PARTHA SARATHY CHATTERJEE Houston’s Durga Bari’s Durga Puja has been one of the largest Pujas in North America at a temple and community center, built and supported primarily by NRI Bengalis of the Houston area. It won the very

first Biswa Bangla Sarad Samman in the international category with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Durga Bari celebrated Mahalaya and Ananda mela with full gusto complete with a food festival, cultural program and fashion show on September 15.

This year’s Durga Puja was celebrated from Oct 3-7.

The Puja was celebrated at the vast temple complex right on a picturesque lake. Durga Bari’s temple has Ashtadhatu deities brought from India.

The Puja is conducted by dedicated volunteer priests over

four days led by Head priest Buddhadeb Bhattachariya. All the rituals were followed - from Bodhon to Bishorjan, from Hom to Chandi path to 108 lotuses during Sandhi Puja.

Dedicated volunteers prepared the elaborate prasad.

About 5000 attendees from all over Houston, Texas and other states attended the Puja.

This year’s Puja had record registration and crowds, given the perfect weather and the expectation of a fabulous Durgabari Puja.

The entire complex became a fun-filled festival with people milling around and mikes blaring. From the entrance gate to Las Vegas style lighting, the temple complex was converted to a Vegas-Kolkata lighting wonderland. The Pujas brought together young and old – from second-generation children and adults to the senior citizens.

Houston Durga Bari’s stage witnessed a powerful lineup of artists rocking the crowd on the Puja days.

With Hindustani Classical, Bengali Modern, Fusion Rock, Bangla Band Music, Bollywood Melodies and Dhamaka and renowned artists like Brajeswar Mukherjee, Supratip, Sohini and Shayok Banerjee and famous Bollywood playback singer Sudesh Bhosle, this year’s programs were exciting, high-class and tremendously entertaining, exceeding all expectations and setting a new high.

Sudesh Bhosle’s show was easily the top show and had the packed auditorium crowd in raptures. Talented local artists, including gifted second-generation children and adults, performed admirably on stage at various entertaining local programs – musical and dance extravaganzas, senior programs, a quiz show, karaoke and dhunuchi naach. In the major local musical and dance program ‘Dashabhujar Anginay’, a large number of talented children and adults of all ages participated and shone on stage.

Volunteers cooked delicious food and served it under a canopy. From lunches to bhog to snacks to dinner, one had a gourmet food experience here.

Tutored by the elders, dhaaks were played by second-generation children, for every Arati and Bishorjan. For Bishorjan, the Kala Bau and the pitchers were taken three times around the temple in a procession and then immersed in the lake.

The Houston Durga Bari organization, the Executive Board led by President Diptabhas Sarkar, and the Puja committee led by Abhoy Das, Chandan Bhattacharjee and Debashis Bose, and a whole team of dedicated volunteers ensured a fabulous Puja experience for the community.

Puja Samithi celebrates Durga Puja

Puja Samithi of Greater Houston celebrated its four annual Durga Puja this year with a huge participation from the Bengali as well as the Indian community from Houston and neighboring cities of Austin, Dallas and San Antonio. This year’s puja was held at at the St. Thomas Indian Orthodox Cathedral auditorium in Stafford, from 3rd to 6th October, where the first two days of puja started with Maha Sasthi on Thursday with the awakening of Goddess Durga, followed

by Maha Saptami puja and celebration on Friday. Dr. Bishnupada Goswami performed the puja for all these days. Devotees offered pushpanjali and observed aarti to the goddess after each puja. Thursday evening saw the performance of Mahalaya to inaugurate the ceremonies.

Kumari Puja, a special puja worshipping little girls as the goddess of power.The Friday night entertainment started with a spectacular opening dance performed by Ananya Bhattacharya (Shikshayatan Art School) to the tune “bajlo tomar alor benu”, followed by dance and songs by Dolly Goel and Atanu Das from Atlanta. After dinner, Chandrika Bhattacharya charmed the audience with her melodious tunes from many Hindi and Bengali songs. SOS Women in Business & Corporate America Series Five unwritten rules to help women succeed in the corporate world

By TANU GREWAL According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, women in the US represent about 47% of the workforce, but their percentage in leadership roles remains low. A recent report by Catalyst, Women CEOs of the S&P 500 (2019), shows that this percentage further declines as you go up the corporate ladder with only 11% in top management/C-Suite, and only 5% at the CEO level.

While these statistics are alarming, it is also true that highlighting this leadership gap starts a dialog that can lead to positive steps by companies to build a leadership pipeline that focuses on recruiting, retaining and nurturing female talent through all levels of the organization. That being said, there are many ways that women themselves can take steps to make sure they understand the unwritten rules of the corporate world and that they feel confident in leveraging this knowledge to help their careers.

1. Know your strengths and make sure others know them too: Start by making a realistic assessment of your strengths. While there are multiple tools such as Gallup’s Strengthfinders, the same can also be accomplished by talking to your managers and peers. It is not enough for you to know

your strengths, the ‘powersthat-be’ also need to know. You have to craft your narrative and your personal brand and then do an advertising campaign for it. Like all good campaigns, this only works when done in a polished and professional way.

2. Get some help from people who know you and aren’t afraid to talk: I cannot stress more the need for women to have mentors inside and outside the company. But, it is equally important, if not more, to have advocates. These are people who know your strengths and your ambitions, sit in rooms where decisions are made, have the required credibility in that room, and most importantly, are not afraid to speak out in your support. Once you have a few advocates, your narrative gets a chance to be heard in the right settings.

3. Lean In, Lean In, Lean In: Women face many preconceived notions about their participation and commitment to their jobs at every milestone in their lives: marriage, birth of a child, or birth of the second child. How you want to chart your career is totally your prerogative and I believe all choices should be respected. But if you do want to keep your foot on the gas pedal of your career, please, please let it be known again and again and again! So, when

it’s time for the next big project or promotion, the organization and decisionmakers have no shadow of doubt (or excuse).

4. Dress for the Job you want: This old adage of ‘dress for the job you want, not the one you have’ still very much holds true. Irrespective of where you work, dressing sharply only helps to reinforce your image and professionalism. It sends a message that you care, give attention to detail, and enhances your brand. Never mind the confidence and the extra spring in your step when you know you are looking your best.

5. Don’t forget to take care of yourself: Women have a difficult time saying no (admit it!) and also bear a disproportionate percentage

of work on the home front. It is important that you learn to say no so you can devote some time to take care of your health: physical, mental and spiritual.

To succeed in corporate America, you have to be on the top of your game and that is only possible when you also feel good inside and out.

AIM for Sewa presents flute concert for donor appreciation

The halls of Stafford Civic Center reverberated with heavenly, mellifluous strains of music, flowing from the Flute Stalwarts – Shashank Subramanyam and Rakesh Chaurasia during the donor appreciation event hosted by AIM for Seva on Sept. 20.

A soulful rendition on Lord Shiva by Hindustani vocalist Jayteerth Mevundi accompanied by Narendra Nayak on Harmonium, a scintillating display of percussion by Satyajit Talwalkar on the Tabla and Patri Satish Kumar on the Mridangam was enthralling.

The concert which began with jugalbandi of the Carnatic Raga Poorvikalyani and Hindustani Raga Puriya Kalyan by the flautists, ably supported by percussion was a sheer delight and a treat for the ears.

The next piece was in Raga Malkauns, which is one of the oldest ragas of Indian Classical Music.

The thani Avartanam by Talwalkar and Satish Kumar was, in short, awe-inspiring and ebullient. The finale - BHO SHAMBHO, a song composed

by Pujya Swamiji Dayananda Saraswati, was a feather in the cap of the artistes.

The mesmerizing jugalbandi concert was like a confluence of flute, vocal and percussion, reflecting the true spirit of divinity.

The atmosphere of divinity pervaded the hall when the event commenced with a soulful rendition of Dayananda Panchakam by Houston’s Kruthi Bhat followed by a musical ensemble rendered by students of Krishna Gana Sudha Music Academy (Houston) under the tutelage of Smt. Rajarajeshwary Bhat.

This fundraiser was organized by, the All India Movement (AIM) for Seva established by visionary and spiritual leader Pujya Swami Dayananda Saraswati, to bring value-based education and health care to the lesser privileged sections of society.

Namita Davey of Rice University and Sreeram Satish of Clements High School shared their recollections of their past AIM for SEVA volunteering trips to Manjakudi, a village in Tamil Nadu, India.

The documentary on the achievements of AIM for SEVA highlighted the organization’s motto- Service to underprivileged.

AIM for Seva helps tackle the problems related to rural education through the unique concept of a Free Student Hostel (Chatralayam) - an idea given by a tribal woman to Pujya Swami Dayananda Saraswati.

A Chatralayam is a living ecosystem, an activity center, a classroom and a learning institute, all rolled into one.

Chatralayam empowers rural

children to learn by providing a place to live close to schools; with a clean environment, nutritious food, value-based education, extracurricular activities and much more so that they don’t just keep up with the rest, but lead a childhood that enables them to contribute to their family, society and the country as a whole.

The celebration of Mahatma Gandhi’s Sesquicentennial as 1000 Lights for Peace and Walk for Peace on Sunday, October 6, 2019 at the Miller Outdoor Theatre marked the conclusion of the yearlong celebrations in Houston. The celebrations were kicked off last year on September 30 at Asia Society.

The gorgeous day started with a 5K Walk for Peace through the beautiful Hermann Park led by Harris County Commissioner of Precinct 1, Rodney Ellis, as the Grand Marshal. The walk began from the Miller Outdoor Theatre with a thunderous send-off by the talented Katy Stockdick Junior High School band directed by George Liverman and Dholi Chidanand Singh.

Krishna Vavilala and Ram Ramanathan, dressed as Mahatma Gandhi, lifted the spirits of the walkers. They paid their respects to Mahatma Gandhi with garlanding his statue in Hermann Park.

The 1000 Lights for Peace program started at 6 pm with a moment of silence in honor of fallen Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal.

A multi faith invocation took place simultaneously coordinated by Rev Gregory Han and carried out by Dr. Sushma Mahajan, Dr. Alejandro Chaoul, Dr. Melanie Mouzoon, and Dr. Kashan Ishaq.

Emcee Dr. Manish Wani kept the evening flowing with historical perspectives not only on Mahatma Gandhi, but also social reformers including Cesar Chavez, Nelson Mandela, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

The Gandhi Darshan Exhibit which offered a chronologic history of Gandhiji with actual photographs from that era was also on display as were booths for arts and crafts and henna painting, which the children lined up for. The Vegan Society for Peace and Unity Houston also had tables with information about their respected organization.

The invocation was followed by a calm, mind-soothing meditation from GROW Unity by Mystic Taout Thanet.

Jain Vishwa Bharati in Houston celebrates its 10th Anniversary

By SASHANK JAIN JVB Houston’s triple event 10th Anniversary celebrations were observed with pooja rituals, a grand cultural evening and the 1st iteration of the Meditation speaker panel.

The weekend long celebrations began early on Saturday, October 12th with the Annual Adhar Abhishek Pooja.

Samanijis’ Punya Pragya ji & Jigyasa Pragya ji provided the perfect start to the day with Navkar Mantra after which Jayesh Khona, who flew in from California to lead and conduct the extensive pooja and related ceremonies took over and walked everyone through the meaningful rituals with deep explanations.

Many patrons of the center participated in the “Adhar Abhishek Pooja” & various other rituals that are performed as part of the four-hour long ceremony; which culminated when the symbolic flag was hoisted on top of the temple structure.

The ceremony was followed by a sumptuous lunch sponsored by Shanti & Geeta Gala.

The day turned into a gorgeous evening, which began

with dinner at 5:30 pm and a good cross-section of the Houston community was in attendance to witness the grand cultural evening.

It began with a pious Jain Prayer - the Navkar Mantra.

The evening’s master of ceremonies & JVB board member Pramod Bengani reminded the audience that this occasion was three celebrations in one - 20th anniversary of JVB Houston’s existence, 10th anniversary of the current facility, and the birth centenary of Jain Monk Acharya Mahapragya ji. He also reminisced about how the organization took shape 20 years ago with the founder hosts - Sunil Mehta along with the vision of its leaders; and the many Samanijis that have been in Houston over the past 20 years.

Houston’s newly crowned Bhajan Idols 2019 - Mahi Tomar & Soma Chatterjee took to the stage and performed soulful bhajans creating wonderful vibrations in the Pyramid hall.

They were accompanied by Smriti Shrivastava on the harmonium & Parshuram Das on the flute.

After this melodious start,

JVB Gyanshala children ages 4 - 14 performed Yoga poses, some synchronized with music and were a treat to watch. This program was conceptualized by Samani Jigyasa Pragya ji, with support from various parent volunteers.

As the stage was being setup for the much-awaited play, JVB’s past President Nikhil Jain recounted the past 10 years of the facility through a slideshow, followed by a short discourse from Samani Punya Pragya ji geared towards the day of celebration.

Current President Shashank Jain recognized key volunteers of the Annual Day celebrations; program leads & Vice – Presidents Ashok Jain & Gaurav Jhaveri & cultural program lead Seema Jain. Decorations for the event were led by Shashi Jain with assistance from Vinnie Verma & countless others.

The play was guided by Samani Punya Pragyaji, produced & directed by Pradeep Jain, and sound & light arrangements were managed by Shanti & Geeta Gala. The evening ended with the recitation of Mangal Paath by Samaniji.

Sunday, October 13th turned out to be another gorgeous day and set the stage for the 1st Triveni Sangam (3 independent thoughts brought together in one session) on “Meditation: Stress Management & Beyond.”

Guest speakers from Brahma Kumaris Texas - Dr. Hansa Rawal and Dr. Harish Chandra from Arya Samaj of Greater Houston presented their thoughts on the topic with an apt conclusion by JVB’s very own Samani Punya Pragya ji.

India retains world’s fastest-growing rank, tying with China: IMF

In the gloomy global economic picture painted by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), India retains its rank as the world’s fastest-growing major economy, tying with China, with a projected growth rate of 6.1 per cent for the current fiscal year, despite an almost one per cent cut in the forecast.

However, the IMF’s World Economic Outlook (WEO) released on Tuesday projected India’s economy to pick up and grow by 7 per cent in the 2020 fiscal year.

The WEO cut India’s growth rate by 0.9 per cent from the 7 per cent made in July and by 1.2 percent from the 7.3 per cent in April.

In contrast to the dark view of the economy within India, when viewed globally, the nation’s picture seems brighter despite the cuts.

The world economy is projected to grow only 3 per cent this year and 3.4 per cent next year amid a “synchronised slowdown”, according to the WEO. Explaining the cut in growth projection for India, the WEO said: “India’s economy decelerated further in the second quarter, held back by sectorspecific weaknesses in the automobile sector and real estate as well as lingering uncertainty about the health of non-bank financial companies.”

It added that “corporate and environmental regulatory uncertainty” were other factors that weighed on demand.

IMF’s projected growth rate of 6.1 per cent for 2019-20 is consistent with the Indian Monetary Policy Committee’s forecast.

About the international scenario, IMF’s Chief Economist Gita Gopinath wrote in the foreword to the WEO: “The global economy is in a synchronized slowdown, with growth for 2019 downgraded again - to 3 percent - its slowest pace since the global financial crisis (in 2007-08). This is a serious climb down from 3.8 percent in 2017, when the world was in a synchronised upswing.”

WEO projected China’s economic growth to slow down to 5.8 per cent next year.

In the Euro area, growth is projected to be only 1.2 percent this year and 1.4 next year, with the German economy expected to grow by a dismal 0.5 per cent this year.

United States is expected to slightly better with a 2.1 per cent growth projected for this year and 2.4 per cent for the next.

Gopinath blamed the global slowdown on rising trade barriers, uncertainty surrounding trade and geopolitics, and structural factors, such as low productivity growth and an aging population in developed countries.

WEO said India’s growth in 2019 is sharply lower than the 6.8 per cent in 2018 “for idiosyncratic reasons, but is expected to recover in 2020”.

The reduction in India’s

growth projection for this year “reflects a weaker-thanexpected outlook for domestic demand”, WEO said.

India’s future “growth will be supported by the lagged effects of monetary policy easing, a reduction in corporate income tax rates, recent measures to address corporate and environmental regulatory uncertainty, and government programs to support rural consumption”, it added.

In the medium term, the IMF expects India’s growth to stabilise at about 7.3 per cent over the medium term, based on continued implementation of structural reforms.

The IMF suggested that India should use monetary policy and broad-based structural reforms to address cyclical weakness and strengthen confidence.

It said: “A credible fiscal consolidation path is needed to bring down India’s elevated public debt over the medium term. This should be supported by subsidy-spending rationalisation and tax-base enhancing measures.”

Other measures it suggested included reducing the public sector’s role in the financial system, reforming the hiring and dismissal regulations that “would help incentivise job creation and absorb the country’s large demographic dividend”, and land reforms to expedite infrastructure development.

The auto sector is one of the areas seriously affected glob-

ally, according to the WEO. “The automobile industry contracted in 2018 for the first time since the global financial crisis, contributing to the global slowdown since last year,” it said.

Global car sales fell by three per cent last year, while the number of automobile units manufactured declined by 1.7 per cent, in value terms it fell by 2.4 per cent, WEO said.

in more than two decades, according to the WEO. It said the two main reasons for the decline of the auto sector were the removal of tax breaks in China and the rollout of new carbon emission tests in Europe.

The auto industry, it noted, had a large global footprint and vehicles and related parts are the world’s fifth largest export product, accounting for about 8 percent of global goods exports in 2018.

Kashmir crisis

SMS services were stopped as a “precautionary measure” a few hours after postpaid mobile phone connections were restored in the Kashmir Valley, officials said on Tuesday.

Mobile phone services for postpaid subscribers resumed in Kashmir after 72 days on Monday noon, but without any internet facilities. By about 5 pm, SMS services were stopped too, officials said.

“SMS services were stopped last evening as a precautionary measure,” said an official.

Two terrorists, including a suspected Pakistani national, shot dead the driver of a Rajasthan truck and assaulted an orchard owner in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir around 8 pm on Monday.

The deceased was identified as Sharief Khan and the terrorists carried out the attack in Shirmal village in desperation as fruit transportation was picking up in the Valley, police said.

Over 25 lakh prepaid mobile phones and other internet services, including WhatsApp, remain deactivated for now, officials said.

Governor Satya Pal Malik said on Monday that internet services would be resumed very soon, but officials in the security establishment maintained the process might take up to two months.

A decision on prepaid subscribers could be taken next month, they said. Phones fell silent on August 5, when the Centre revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status granted under Article 370 and reorganised the state into two union territories.

Narayan, Sri Venugopalan, Sri Vamana Moorthy, Sri Rama Pattabhishekam, Sri Mohini Avatharam, Sri Gagendra Mokham, Sri Kalinga Narthanam, and Sri Saraswathy.

Each day, the erudite priests created the phenomenal displays with the help of creative artisans and offered the visiting devotees an educational yet sublime experience.

As the yardstick demonstration of Navarathri is through the display of Kolu, and as Sri Meenakshi Temple is the abode of Goddess Meenakshi, this year, the theme was “STHREE SHAKTHI”, The Power of Feminine, as an appropriate gesture and offer to the presiding deity, the supreme Divine Feminine Power responsible for creation, protection and liberation.

The symbolic understanding of the Hindu Pantheon where the male deities represent Matter and the female that of Energy, the concept aligns with the modern understanding of physical and metaphysical phenomena of the universe.

Meticulously conceived by the temple chairman Dr. Padmini Nathan and director Nachal Sethuraman, and painstakingly crafted by the ingenious Silpis, the elaborate Kolu was laboriously constructed through many

weeks and displayed in the spacious premises of the Ganesh Temple. The focus of the theme is portraying the feminine energy as highlighted through the values of devotion, forgiveness, fiery courage to uphold righteousness, revolt for self-respect, and sacrifice for integrity that imbibe and empower the traditions and heritage of India.

Through the stories of Andal, Kannaki, Sita, and Draupadi, the display narrates the essence of the principles. Another popular highlight of the Kolu was of ‘chiranjeevi’ Hanuman, his exploits conveying his ultimate devotion, intelligence and strength.

If the set-up of the ‘Rural Scenes’ of Tamil Nadu with the theppakulam, temple premises and the village settings kindle nostalgic sentiments, the sleeping Kumbhakarna, Gajendra Moksham, Brahmotsavam and the likes elicit an array of familiar emotions.

As the steady stream of devotees enthusiastically examine, appreciate and discover from the excellent Kolu displays, the reality that such traditional Indian cultural extravagance is happening in the Texas cowboy country is certainly bound to be an astounding realization, perhaps only to be conceived as one of absolute divine allowance.

organisations on Monday wrote to the UK Opposition Leader, Jeremy Corbyn, to condemn the Labour Party’s stance on Kashmir in the wake of the Indian government revoking the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Labour Party on September 25 passed an emergency motion on Kashmir calling for party leader Corbyn to seek international observers to “enter” the region and demand the right of selfdetermination for its people, drawing criticism from the Indian diaspora representatives who described it as “ill conceived” and “misinformed”.

A cross-section of British-Indian bodies, including the Indian Professionals Forum (IPF), Indian National Students Association (INSA), Hindu Council UK as well as temple bodies and community representatives, added their name to a joint letter which accuses Corbyn of bringing an India-Pakistan bilateral affair into the domestic politics of the UK by adopting a “divisive” emergency motion that calls for international intervention in the region.

“We are writing collectively, as British-Indian community organisations, to express our deep dismay that Her Majesty’s Opposition has abandoned a long-standing cross-party position on Kashmir as a strictly bilateral matter between India and Pakistan, and in doing so, sown the seeds of community disharmony in the United Kingdom,” the letter notes.

“The emergency motion passed at the recent Labour Party Conference is not acceptable to us as it seeks to interfere in the internal matters of, and between, third countries and is drafted in a one-sided and divisive manner...We are also hugely concerned about the wider attempts to bring the Kashmir issue into the domestic politics of the United Kingdom, which has serious ramifications for community harmony,” it says.

Making a reference to the clashes outside the Indian High Commission in London on August 15 between Indian diaspora groups marking Indian Independence Day and members of Pakistani and separatist outfits, the letter warns against the politics of the sub-continent spilling over to a Brexit-hit UK to cause further divisions.

It further declares that British-Indian organisations are holding consultations to reconsider their “level and nature of engagement” with Labour going forward.

“We are particularly dismayed by the virulent reaction by the Labour Party to the removal of an outdated, temporary provision that was hindering development of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir,” the letter adds, in reference to India’s abrogation of Article 370.

“This is huge and unprecedented. I cannot recall ever so many British Indian organisations writing in protest to a leader of a political party,” said Manoj Ladwa, CEO of UK-based media house India Inc and former Chair of Labour’s Indian Community Engagement Forum, who called for an urgent “course correction” in order to prevent the Labour Party losing its diaspora support base.

“There are over 1.5 million people of Indian origin in the UK, who like me have traditionally voted Labour. If Jeremy Corbyn doesn’t think he has a problem, then he certainly has a serious problem,” added the BJP supporter, as he warned that Labour’s perceived anti-India stance could spiral beyond its ongoing troubles with allegations of antisemitism within the party.

The letter follows weeks of face off between the UK’s Opposition and diaspora groups after the Labour Party passed what the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) branded an “uninformed and unfounded” motion last month.

The resolution, tabled by Pakistani-origin Labour MPs, called for international intervention in Kashmir and added: “Accept that Kashmir is a disputed territory and the people of Kashmir should be given the right of self-determination in accordance with UN resolutions.”

Corbyn has since conceded that the language used had the scope of being misinterpreted, but has stood by the emergency motion. “The emergency motion on Kashmir came through as part of the democratic process of the Labour Party Conference.

However, there is a recognition that some of the language used within it could be misinterpreted as hostile to India and the Indian Diaspora,” Corbyn said in a reply to the Labour Friends of India (LFIN) group last week as he invited them for a meeting to further discuss the issue.

It came soon after the Indian Overseas Congress (IOC) UK chapter got embroiled in a controversy over the controversial resolution. Its members were pictured meeting Corbyn, who later took to Twitter to hail the “very productive” meet during which both sides discussed the human rights situation in Kashmir.

NEWS Indian American Abhijit Banerjee shares Nobel Banerjee’s JNU arrest and Prize in economics with wife, colleague 12 days in Tihar jail

Banerjee, Duflo and Kramer The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2019 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, popularly called the Nobel Prize in Economics, to Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo, and Michael Kremer “for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty”.

While Dr. Banerjee and Dr. Duflo are both affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Kremer is with Harvard University. The three will equally share the prize money of 9 million Swedish krona (about $916,798 and ₹6.53 crore).

Dr. Banerjee and Dr. Duflo, who are married to each other, have had a long history of conducting research together, often collaborating with Dr. Kremer as well.

“The research conducted by this year’s laureates has considerably improved our ability to fight global poverty,” the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said in a release. “In just two decades, their new experimentbased approach has transformed development economics, which is now a flourishing field of research.”

The laureates have, since the mid-1990s, sought to introduce a new approach to obtaining reliable answers about the most effective ways to combat global poverty. Rather than focussing on big-picture questions, they divided the issue into smaller, more manageable and measurable questions.

They then showed that these smaller questions could be best answered through carefully designed experiments among the people who are most affected.

This thought process has resulted in what are called randomised control trials, previously used in the pure sciences and in clinical drug trials, to be deployed in the social sciences.

“As a result, we now have a large number of concrete results on specific mechanisms behind poverty and specific interventions to alleviate it,” said the technical paper, accompanying the announcement. “For example, on schooling, strong evidence now shows that the employment of contract teachers is generally a cost-effective way to improve student learning, while the impact

of reduced class size is mixed, at best.”

“On health, poor people’s investment in preventive care has been shown to be very sensitive to the prices of health products or services, giving a strong argument for generous subsidies to such investments,” the paper added. “On credit, growing evidence indicates that micro-finance programmes do not have the development effects that many had thought when these programmes were introduced on a large scale.”

One of the major findings by Dr. Banerjee and Dr. Duflo was that, in developing countries, there is often a stark difference between the technology and practices used by companies within the same economy and sector. That is, in developing economies, some companies use the latest technology and practices, while others in the same country and sector use outdated production methods. This withinsector differences are less stark in developed economies, they found.

“Banerjee and Duflo further argued that these misallocations can be traced back to various market imperfections and government failures,” the paper said. “Hence, a core step in understanding, and ultimately alleviating, poverty is to identify sources of the observed inefficiencies as well as policies that could address them.”

Dr. Banerjee was born in 1961 in Mumbai, India. He completed his Ph.D in 1988 at Harvard University, having previously studied at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and Presidency College, which was then affiliated with the University of Calcutta. He is currently the Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Michael Kremer, who shared the Nobel Prize for economics with Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee and Esther Duflo for using randomised controlled trials to determine how best to lift people out of poverty and improve their health, had pioneered the experimental approach in Kenya in the 1990s and was soon joined by Duflo and Banerjee, according to media reports.

its the researchers with breaking down large questions about poverty into smaller research questions, such as the best interventions for improving child health, and using field experiments to solve them.

Kremer, the Gates Professor of Developing Societies in the department of economics at Harvard University, had in the 1990s launched a number of field experiments in western Kenya to improve educational results, The Washington Post reported.

He and his colleagues tested whether students perform better when their schools receive extra resources, such as textbooks and free meals, and found that these interventions did not improve learning outcomes, according to the Nature.

Banerjee and Duflo later performed similar studies, building research methods that “now entirely dominate” development economics, according to the Nobel committee, the Post reported.

The researchers also found that even small differences in prices can lead to dramatically different health outcomes, particularly in preventive care.

Kremer, for instance, discovered that 75 per cent of poor parents would give their children deworming pills for parasitic infections when the medication was free, compared with 18 per cent when the medicine cost less than $1, according to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

After these findings, the committee said, the World Health Organisation recommended that medicine be distributed for free to more than 800 million schoolchildren in areas where more than 20 per cent have a certain kind of parasitic worm infection.

Kremer received an undergraduate degree in social studies in 1985 and a Ph.D in economics in 1992, both from Harvard, according to the Harvard Gazette. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship and a Presidential Faculty Fellowship. In 2010, he was named the scientific director of development innovation ventures for the US Agency for International Development (USAID). And he was a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study 2013-2014.

In May 1983, Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee and some 360 other students of JNU, including 50 women, spent 12 days in Tihar jail on charges including an attempt to murder the vice-chancellor.

Had the government not pardoned the students for their gherao of the VC and a clash with police, Banerjee would not have been able to leave for Harvard later that year to do his PhD. Thirty-three years later, soon after the police arrested a few JNU students over the alleged chanting of seditious slogans, Banerjee wrote about the contentious subject in Hindustan Times.

“As India, we support the self-determination of the Palestinian people but not those of the Kashmiris, because we need to secure our borders or because we need to protect the Kashmiri people from some greater evil across the border or because we need to defend the legitimacy of the original accession,” he wrote.

“Whatever those arguments be, when we make them it is vital that we recognise that we are on delicate terrain, vital that every time we deviate from our stated ideals we take a deep breath and think about it.

“This is why universities, and civil society more generally, are so important for a democracy like ours, founded on a genuine idealism that we have a hard time holding on to…. Students often say things that they will one day change their minds about, but also things that change our minds when we think about them. We need the space. Please stay out.”

Banerjee did an MA in economics from 1981 to 1983. His contemporary Janaki Nair, who was studying for an MA in history then and teaches in JNU now, told The Telegraph: “He did not want to go to the US. The UK was his first choice. He appeared for an interview for the Inlaks scholarship and was upset for days when he did not get it.”

“He was left of Left…. The Far Left then was a loose grouping of individuals. He went to jail just before the final semester exams, and was taken away by the police while sitting on a dharna.

A lot of us participated in that protest only because Abhijit was there. His parents were worried and had come down from Calcutta after his arrest.”

Several of Banerjee’s contemporaries confirmed that he did not conform, and was well read not just in economics but also English and Bangla literature as well as philosophy. Although he bitterly criticised the mainstream Left, a student leader from that time said that he voted for the SFI. The gherao Banerjee was arrested for was led by Students for Democratic Socialism and the Free Thinkers — a group that current finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman was part of.

“Whatever books we talked about, Abhijit had already read them. When we were beginning to read about the anthropologist Clifford Geertz, Abhijit had already read his books,” Nair said.

Banerjee was not always focused on the “experimental approach” to economics that has won him and two others the Nobel.

One of his former teachers, Anjan Mukherji, described Banerjee as “among the top three or four class toppers that I have taught, and the only one who could have won a Nobel”.

He added: “He was especially interested in economic theory.

He did his PhD under the noted economic theorist, Eric Maskin.

He then forayed into experimental research and randomised controlled trials --- a new thing in economics that he applied to poverty alleviation. Big questions are difficult to answer, and his work tries to provide simple answers to the smaller questions.…

That is more in demand than a general answer.”

This approach --- based on the idea that micro interventions are substantially independent of the macro context — is not hugely popular at JNU. Banerjee has not been invited to lecture at the university for at least a decade although he frequently visits Delhi since much of his research concerns the state of education in Rajasthan.

N. Sai Balaji, former JNU students’ union president, said: “Professor Abhijit Banerjee getting the Nobel Prize asserts the importance of public education. He is a product of public education funded by the people, for the people and to the people. n March 14, this year, scores of economists and social scientists from across the world spoke out against a tendency to suppress uncomfortable data in India, seeking to restore access and integrity to public statistics and re-establish institutional independence to statistical organisations. “Any statistics that cast an iota of doubt on the achievement of the government seem to get revised or suppressed on the basis of some questionable methodology,” said an appeal signed by 108 academics.

The appeal was endorsed by some of the most respected economists and statisticians, including Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo of MIT. On March 19, BJP leader Arun Jaitley, who passed away on August 24, said: “The recent statement by the 108 purported economists reveals compulsions of ‘Compulsive Contrarians’.

Most of them have, over the last few years, repeatedly signed the memorandums of manufactured issues against path-breaking reforms of the present government.” (The Telegraph)

•Celebrate the ‘Victory of Good over Evil’, ‘Light Over Darkness’ and ‘Universal Brotherhood’.

The presentation and showcasing of the rich Indian culture in Houston is indeed a unique and very effective one that showcases the Indian heritage and true spirt of Diwali and Dussehra like never before.

Exciting highlights that one may expect from the Festival: The Stadium and the baseball field will be specially decorated for this occasion with millions of Stellar Diwali lights and other decorations which will be visible from several miles away. The main entrance gates and nearly 100 merchandize booths and tables will be draped in multicolored silks and lights. These booths will be vending traditional Diwali items including Diwali candles,

jewelry, fashion clothing, make up items for ladies, and toys among other items. A number of banks and service companies are expected to promote their services. A Ladies Bazaar selling items exclusively for ladies (called Meena Bazaar) is always a sure hit!

The ceilings and walls of the concourse and field will be decorated with traditional banners, flags, hangings, pictures and deities of Hindu Gods and Goddesses. A food Bazaar will be serving vegetarian food from every part of India so that no palate remains unsatisfied.

This festival also caters to children with free Henna booths, face painting, balloons, moon walk, a merry go round, shooting the Ravan game, Ravan Pinatas, Petting zoo, pony rides, clowns, toys and many more attractions.

The stage program will be presented on a 2 tiered stage that is 60 feet in length and 40 ft. in depth, located at the 2nd base. Professionally installed stage lights, special effects and huge LED screens are likely to make this memorable evening the best Diwali-Dussehra event ever in Houston. The stage presentations include several folk dances, prominent King and Queens of India, Origins of Goddess Laxmi, the incredible play on Lord Ram’s life and the final battle to overcome Evil, and a special spiritual dance by an artist from Egypt. A special segment will also showcase nearly 100 children dressed up in different characters from the Indian scriptures.

Alongside the stage will be

a striking 24 foot tall figure of Lord Hanuman and a newly brought figure of Lord Ram towering at 35 foot tall; both revered in the Hindu religion.

A multicolored parade with around 50 floats representing several temples, organizations, scenes representing stories and characters from the Indian scriptures are presented in this magnificent parade, which has earned laurels in USA for its quality, content and second to none in presentation.

The festival is incomplete without demonstrating the destruction of Evil and the victory of Good. What better way to deliver this message home than the burning of the effigies of the evil figures of ‘Ravan’, ‘Kumbhakaran’ and ‘Meghnath’, specially built for this occasion. The evil is consumed by fire and the euphoria of the Victory of Goodness is celebrated by the amazing sound of fire crackers and a breathtaking display of aerial fireworks considered to be the best in Houston.

This event is to be held on October 19th 2019 from 4:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at Skeeters Stadium at 1, Stadium Drive in Sugar Land, Texas. Tickets for this extravaganza are only $10.00 available from the Foundation’s website www.
