Letter from the General Manager

W

We reinvent ourselves every season, always experimenting and improving

e work tirelessly to offer our guests something new, different, more beautiful and fun every year. This is what makes us unique – we are able to reinvent ourselves every season, always experimenting and improving. Following the widespread restyling we have carried out over recent years, we could have stopped and pulled in the oars of the boat. But idleness, though creative, is not for us. During the Sardinian winter we don’t like to simply sit on our hands, which is why each and every one of our activities is designed to both surprise and amaze our guests. In this issue, we highlight all the news we have in store for you such as the new lagoon style pool, proof that Forte Village can marry luxury with affordable prices. There’s also the new infinity pool, which stares out over the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea. We have some new chefs, including the renowned threeMichelin-starred chef Heinz Beck, and a new shopping street behind Piazza Luisa that features boutiques from worldfamous brands. At Forte Village, there is something for everyone – for lovers of sport, wellness and music. Faithful to the Latin motto mens sana in corpore sano, which means “a healthy mind in a healthy body”, we have superb meditation courses and body treatments from the professionals at the Acquaforte Thalasso & Spa. And for your entertainment we have some world-class acts performing at the Arena. Then there’s our latest project – Hotel Palazzo Doglio. Based in the heart of historic Cagliari, it has already been listed by the prestigious Leading Hotels of the World. Lastly, we have interviews with some of the famous people who like to holiday at Forte Village, such as football manager Massimiliano Allegri. This magazine acts as a guide to some of the fantastic experiences that will make your stay at Forte Village truly unforgettable.

elixir of long life From the Ogliastra to Barbagia, the land of centenarians thrives on a Mediterranean diet, but above all, human relationships. Written by Luciano Tancredi Photography by Šdaniela zedda

Diet plays a fundamental role in longevity

A

re you looking for the elixir of long life? Well, if you’re in the vicinity of Forte Village you may get the feeling that there is a very powerful one close by. And that its inhabitants are the custodians of the secret recipe. Here, in the province of Cagliari, or in fact the whole area that stretches from Ogliastra to Barbagia, life lasts longer. In fact, Sardinia is among the top five places in the world for centenarians – the others are the village of Loma Linda in California, the Nicoya Peninsula on Costa Rica, the Greek island of Icaria and Okinawa, Japan. These are the so-called “blue zones” of the planet, identified by the scholars Gianni Pes and Michel Poulain. The people living in these zones, according to the researchers, share some common traits: a strong religious faith, regular physical activity, movements that take place mainly on foot, a diet based on vegetables and legumes, and a social structure that fosters intense human relationships and focuses on the family. These strong relationships intertwine, especially in the highly popular tzilleri. For those who are unfamiliar with the dialect of Barbagia, it is a bar with a very friendly atmosphere, within which the life of Sardinian flows around a glass of cannonau.

Diet certainly plays a fundamental role in the longevity of its residents – vegans and vegetarians are virtually extinct. The typical diet of shepherds was based primarily on the consumption of dairy products and meat, especially sheep and goat. There is a focus on fresh, local produce and strictly seasonal products, which are almost always obtained from farms in the area. Today, that food culture has been handed down by the older generation, which is still extremely active in the community. It’s easy to understand the benefits of such a regime: few fats, no processed food, zero preservatives and all the nutritional properties of products that have been cultivated on the land, such as wholemeal bread, vegetables, goat’s cheese and wine. Meat is consumed, but only in moderation and is selected with a strict criteria: only cuts of locally produced meat that come to the table directly from farms in the area. Lifestyle is also of enormous importance. In the “blue zones”, gymnasiums are few and far between, but physical activity is an essential element in the daily life of the centenarians. From the pressing of the grapes to the harvesting of vegetable garden, over the years there have been hundreds of

occupations that have helped Sardinians to enjoy a particularly long life – daily routines with thousands of beneficial effects that have become an example of best practice to live a long and healthy life. Casa Campidanese, an elective place for active aging in Sardinia, is an academic paper that sums up a programme developed by the World Community of Longevity. It is a home-laboratory, in perfect Sardinian style, complete with a courtyard and reception areas, where you can emulate the activities linked to agro-pastoral life that have allowed traditional inhabitants to reach their 100th birthday in perfect health. The link between food, lifestyle, sociability and longevity is also the central theme of a documentary filmed last year in Barbagia by Hollywood star Zac Efron, as well as a report by CNN. And while American journalists highlight the role played by social networks in promoting the psychological well-being of older people in these areas of longevity, Efron highlights the mix of genetic factors, together with a particular diet, as the vital components of a long life, as well as a glass of good red wine.

oasis We’ll take care of you in our spa with five top treatments for body and mind

A

fter a few hours of sea and sun you may decide to add some much deserved well-being to your holiday, to pamper yourself a little and dedicate time to body and mind. It’s the ideal time to visit our spa. The Acquaforte Thalasso & Spa has its roots in the ancient Roman civilisation, who developed the study and practice of bathing and its many benefits. Twenty-five years ago, Dr Angelo Cerina harnessed this ancient knowledge to revolutionise the world of thalassotherapy, creating an incredibly effective method of detoxifying the body. A method that has been refined and enhanced over time, thanks to the best specialists in sports medicine, aesthetics and diet, and which are present in the modern facilities of the Forte Lab and Performance Centre – something unique and original in the heart of Forte Village. Among the many treatments available in the spa, here are the top 5 treatments you need to try next time you are at our Acquaforte spa!.

1

Thalassotherapy

The thalassotherapy of Acquaforte Thalasso & Spa is based on the revolutionary principle of using sea water at different temperatures and salt density. Surrounded by a marvellous garden, the thalassotherapy path is made up of six pools of virgin sea water from Sardinia’s shoreline, drawn more than 100 metres from the shore and from a depth of 10 metres. The first three pools contain water heated at a high temperature and with a high salt concentration, which performs an extraordinary detoxifying action. The last three, which contain a lower saline concentration and temperature, complete the regenerating programme.

You may decide to add some muchdeserved well-being to your holiday 24 24-25 Top 5 Spa forte 2019 v4.indd 24

Opposites attract, or so the saying goes, which is evident from this extraordinary exfoliating massage, where the softness of Sardinian honey and the energy of sea salt, combined with essential oils, purify, moisturise and smooth the skin, giving it a sun-kissed glow during every soothing caress.

BEAUTY AND WELLNESS

Summer Beauty the perfect holiday

Where well-being becomes total: to make you feel more beautiful, healthier and repair damage caused by the sun and heat 28 28-29 Regina Wellness forte 2019 v4.indd 28

A

holiday is synonymous with relaxation and wellness, but at Forte Village these effects are multiplied by the luxurious pampering that the world’s best resort can offer to every guest. But there is a way to increase this relaxation exponentially: it’s called ‘summer medicine’ and the priestess of this deliciously satisfying experience goes by the name of Dr Regina Fortunato, a specialist in plastic surgery, reconstructive and aesthetic.

Q Doctor, what is ‘summer medicine’? Aesthetic medicine can always be done year-round, but there are treatments that reach their maximum effectiveness during the summer. We think of everything that can enrich a holiday, both physically and psychologically, as well as help to repair the damage caused by exposure to the sun and heat.

Q Give us some examples. In our centre we have machines that can help to reduce cellulite, tone the body, compact body tissues, reduce body fat, smooth wrinkles and fight the fluid retention that can occur during summer. These are non-invasive treatments so they will not prevent guests from taking part in the normal activities of a holiday, such as tanning, swimming and sport. It means they can take advantage of every service offered at Forte Village’s beautiful spa, from thalassotherapy to massages.

Q Are there many people who choose this type of holiday? More than you might believe, especially when you understand that you can enrich your holiday by focusing not only on physical improvements, but on psychologically beneficial improvements too. One lady I know was scared of undergoing any aesthetic intervention. But when she came to the spa she spoke to us and we explained the non-invasive procedures we carried out. She then wanted

to try all of them! Before returning home she thanked us for making her holiday so memorable. Unfortunately, people often believe that these techniques are invasive, but that just isn’t the case.

Q Can you explain some of the treatments? Well, we have Ultherapy, the first nonsurgical facelift. It involves just one session and there is no need for scalpels or needles. The recovery time is zero and the results are clear and progressive: we are talking about a facelift made with ultrasounds that regenerates the skin deep down, making it more toned, compact and smooth. Then we have Sculpsure. It’s a noninvasive system that remodels the body by reducing excess fat and leaving the skin firmer in various areas, such as the

abdomen, the hips, the legs and the arms. We also have Carboxytherapy and the Velashape. They are both very effective, non-invasive, hi-tech treatments. So treat yourself to a holiday of relaxation and well-being, thinking of both your body and mind. I await you at the Acquaforte Thalasso & Spa to make your stay at Forte Village truly unforgettable.

journey, starting with traditional Mediterranean and then onto Brazilian- Japanese food. Eating at Palazzo Doglio is a unique experience and provides the perfect balance between experimentation, innovation and tradition. Close to the Palazzo Doglio are some of the cities most notable attractions, from the Bastion of Saint Remy to the castle, from the white beaches and the crystalline waters of the Poetto to the ruins of the Punic and Roman Caralis. And just a few metres away lies the famous Basilica of San Saturnino, the oldest church in the capital and one of the earliest Christian churches on the Mediterranean. Palazzo Doglio is just 700 metres from the Bastion of Saint Remy and less than a mile from the Sanctuary of Nostra Signora di Bonaria, while the famous Poetto Beach is just 8km away. The nearest airport is Cagliari Elmas, which is 10km from the property. The rooms of Palazzo Doglio vary,

from intimate rooms to large suites, but all feature modern furnishings that combine classic details - such as precious Carrara marble - with elements of contemporary design. The Classic Room is between 25 sqm and 30 sqm and offers a king-size bed, desk and small armchair. The bathroom has a large marble shower and the room is enhanced by the wonderful natural light that enters through the windows that overlook the street or the internal courtyard. A larger Deluxe Room is between 31 sqm and 41 sqm. They are furnished

in a contemporary style, but come with rich details. Each room contains a king-size bed, a sofabed, desk and small armchair. The bathroom features a marble bath and shower, while the natural light that enters from the windows gives the whole space a unique atmosphere. But the real gems are the Suites, which are characterised by embossed wood panelling and luxurious fabrics in aquamarine and ultramarine blue: they offer guests pure comfort and luxury. They are spacious – between 38 sqm and 52 sqm – and include a king-side bed, a desk and armchairs.

GENIUS AND MADNESS The football coach is a fan of both Sardinia and Forte Village: “I love this land; its colours, aromas and people” Interview by Luciano Tancredi people who live there – loyal people who live simply. I like it a lot because with them I can live normally.

Q You have holidayed at Forte Village for many years now. Is it a place for the soul?

Communication, and above all, human resources management, are important when managing people. Two things that require a little ‘healthy madness’ because they are not things you can do only through protocols and schemes that some people in the soccer world follow slavishly. It’s not really like that. It takes unpredictability, it takes intuition. We need to live with feelings to manage the integrity of a team and all those who live around it. But I do not say anything strange. I think this happens in every organisation and for every person who has many people to manage.

Yes. For me, the days of a vacation are sacred. I want to spend them in a place where I can enjoy my privacy and relax. I keep coming back here for precisely those reasons, which are guaranteed by the efficiency and kindness of the staff, and of all the people who work there. Forte Village is a wonderful place where I can relax, recover my energy and be close to the people I love. And I love this land; its colours, aromas and people.

Q It’s a place you know well. You lived in Sardinia, first as a player then as the coach of Cagliari from 2008 to 2010. What character traits of the land and the people do you like? I was a player here from 1992 to 1996 and I fitted in very well. I have always had many Sardinian friends. I have lived with them and created true bonds – they are wonderful people. In the beginning it was a bit hard to enter their world, but when you do enter you do not let go. And then I love this land, from Cagliari to the north. The sea is amazing, but I am particularly fascinated by the inland areas: the history and the

38 38-39 Allegri forte 2019 v4.indd 38

Q Does normality mean detaching yourself from the stressful world of football? It may seem strange, but when I am at Forte Village I think about everything except football. So for about ten days I try, with some success, to hit a tennis ball over the net. I also like bowling, which my son loves, but above all basketball. It’s a sport I like so much. All simple things, but for me they are moments of total relaxation to be enjoyed with my family.

Q “A little bit of healthy madness, putting aside the arguments and thinking of ourselves as invincible,” is what you said in a recent interview in outlining your mentality in managing a group. Can you explain this?

Q They say you brought a light touch into the football environment. In your opinion, is it more advantageous than a more rigorous style? I would say you need the right mix. At work, it’s important to know when it is time to work and when there is some time to be able to joke around and relax. It is very important to distinguish the two moments, but to practise them both. We must be serious but not too much, not always. Never take yourself too seriously. Our bodies, but above all our minds, sometimes need to detach.

Q You have a winning mentality, tactical intelligence, the ability to understand the individual and empathise with your players. What is your secret? I’ll tell you in just three words: manage human resources. Know the people you work with. That is the secret.

Q You have known many people in your long and successful career. Is it in these relationships that you find the incentive to go on and keep winning? Yes. The secret is to continuously raise the bar and overcome any problems with constructive dialogue. But you must listen to the people who work alongside you and below you. If you only listen to yourself, you can hardly improve.

Q Where did your passion for football come from? It came from when I was a child, but it wasn’t my only passion. I’ve played so many sports that Ive enjoyed, especially Basketball thank goodness I didn’t continue! (Laughs). I loved many sports, something which I believe all children have to do. Sports is fundamental to living a good and fruitful life. Only after trying many sports that you are in a position to choose the one you would like to specialise in.

Q What advice would you give to a young person who wants to pursue a career in football? They must be passionate about it. In all jobs, you need passion to succeed. Kids must have this passion if they want to succeed in any walk of life, and we must help them do it. This is very important.

Q If you had not chosen football, what would you have done?

assimiliano Allegri is a winning football coach – his record as the boss of Juventus speaks for itself. But if you expected him to be an iron-fisted general in order to get the best from his players and staff, you’d be disappointed. Allegri combines intuition with a pinch of healthy madness, as he himself admits. Scanzonato (Italian for easy-going) defined Italo Allodi, the legendary Italian football executive. And it is a quality shared by Massimiliano. At Forte Village, Allegri is at home. He visits every year to forget the stresses of the game, devoting himself to his family and enjoying other sports. Here, the coach becomes Max, the boy from Livorno. ‘Anchovy’, as they called him when he played football, because of his slouched demeanour and his ability to slip away from opponents.

I don’t know what I would have done! Up to the age of 24 I messed around a lot. In the end, I was quite fortuitous: the passion that I have inside brought me to football. I was lucky enough to be a footballer first and then, above all, a coach.

spontaneous act or decision can sometimes turn into something very big. And that’s exactly what happened to three-star Michelin German chef Heinz Beck when he made the surprise move from his homeland to Italy back in 1994. A new chapter is now being added to his culinary story as one of the

very best Italian chefs opens a restaurant in May at the one of Italy’s very best holiday destinations – Forte Village Resort. Guests can look forward to simple but wonderfully made bistro-style food during the day and fine gourmet cuisine in the evening. Whether it’s basil tortellini with freezedried mozzarella and tomatoes, roasted eggplant with lemon aromas, figs and tomatoes, or St. Peter’s fish in liquorice crust and almond cream with lemon prawns, Beck creates wonderfully aromatic delicacies using the best ingredients the Mediterranean has to offer. He has proven his talent in the kitchen, which is clear from the many awards Beck has received in recent years. La Pergola, his restaurant in Rome, was awarded its three Michelin stars back in 2005 and retains them to this day.

Beck has also held the Five Star Diamond Award since 1998 and, since 2013, the Six Star Diamond Award, both awarded by the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences. Prominent culinary publications Gambero Rosso and L’Espresso agree that Beck is a genius in the kitchen. Diners will have a choice of a small snack at lunchtime or an opulent dinner in the evening. Chef Beck has personally ensured that the restaurant been designed to his exact specifications and that every detail is just right, leaving nothing to fate. And if fine dining weren’t enough reason to visit the restaurant, guests will also be able to enjoy magnificent views of the Mediterranean during their meal. All Beck’s guests need to do is to relax and enjoy one of the most beautiful places in Sardinia. Holiday happiness could hardly be more perfect!

aison Pommery is one of the world’s most famous Champagne producers and is responsible for turning Champagne-making into a work of art. The company was founded in 1836 by Alexandre Pommery and was taken over by his wife, Louise, when he died two years later. In 1868, at the behest of Madame Louise, construction on the Domaine Pommery began. The 10-year project involved miners digging 18km of interconnected galleries out of ancient chalk Gallo-Roman caves to create 120 cellars that house barrel and rib vaults. Above ground, the Domaine Pommery is a picturesque, sprawling estate that covers 50 hectares within landscaped neo-Gothic Elizabethan buildings and vineyards that fascinate visitors, as well as historians of art and architecture. The subterranean cellars are only accessible via the magnificent 116-step staircase that takes visitors down 30 metres to the spectacular, twilight “underground cathedral”. Madame Pommery’s vision has

fortevillage.com 48-49-UK-Pommery forte 2019 v3.indd 49

resulted in a place of vibrant beauty that epitomises the land of Champagne. In 1874, the Domaine Pommery gave the world the first vintage brut in the history of Champagne, Pommery Nature: producing a taste and style that is now synonymous with the world’s most famous wine. Since 2002, Maison Pommery has been owned by Vranken - Pommery Monopole Group – the world second-largest Champagne producer. The group’s portfolio includes Pommery, Vranken, Diamant, Demoiselle, Charles Lafitte and Heidsieck & Co. Monopole. The group has vineyards in Provence and Camargue in the south of France, where it is a leading manufacturer of branded wines Rosé with Château La Gordonne and Domaine de Jarras, and also in Portugal, where it produces Douro Superior with the brands Rozès and Terras do Grifo. The vineyards in these areas are the largest in Europe, covering more than 7,000 hectares. In Italy, all the group’s brands are distributed by the Italian branch of Vranken - Pommery, led by CEO Mimma Posca.

Sardinia, where life has more taste. CIPNES present the promotional and internationalization program named “INSULA Longevity World”. Sardinia, the island of longevity at the centre of the Mediterranean sea, combines strong cultural traditions and culinary uniqueness, that are firmly tied to the geography of the region and its natural products. Our island is one of the five world areas, called “Blue Zones”, with the highest concentration of centenarians. Together with the island of Okinawa we have the highest ratio of citizens to centenarians: 22 every 100.000 inhabitants, against a world average of 8 every 100.000 inhabitants. Several studies point out how the longevity of the Sardinian population is related to a perfect balance of different factors, such as the quality of the environment and lifestyle, genetic factors, low population density, and a diet rich in genuine foods with important nutritional properties (e.g. sheep and goats cheese rich in anti-cancer and anti-cholesterol CLA fatty-acids; Cannonau wine, rich in polyphenols with high antioxidant properties; dairy products, rich in lactobacillus and live probiotics and sourdough bread rich in aromas and with a low glycemic index, etc...). Furthermore, Sardinia is a famously exclusive tourist destination, surrounded by nature and unique landscapes, rich in biodiversity, history and millenary traditions, while also being a land of great food and wine culture, productive know-how and high quality products. It is exactly those attributes that CIPNES has decided to showcase to the world. CIPNES is a territorial public institution in Sardinia that, through its Agrifood and territorial Marketing Division, is promoting the development and the international promotion of Sardinian quality production chains through the internationalization program called “Sardinia Longevity World”, with focus on the agrifood and craftsmanship products, that encompass the partecipation of the Business Network “Sardinia Longevity Food” and the Sardinia master craftsmen network. In order to support the internationalization program CIPNES is finalizing the territorial marketing platform called “INSULA EXPO”, dedicated to the promotion of Sardinia's production chains and territorial districts, that represents a permanent bridge between Sardinian products and international potential markets. From this year forward, the high quality production chains of Sardinia (agrifood and artistic crafts) will also be present at Forte Village, in the Showroom INSULA and in the typical INSULA Enogastronomic corner within the Pineta restaurant.

Spices up Sardinia Vivek Singh

The Cinnamon Club is coming to Forte Village. Celebrated chef Vivek Singh talks about his background and his ethos for Indian fine dining

W

orld-renowned chef Vivek Singh is bringing his unique style of Indian fusion cuisine to Forte Village with the opening of his new restaurant – The Cinnamon Club. Based on his flagship London restaurant of the same name, Vivek will use classic, locally produced Mediterranean ingredients and give them his own inimitable twist for the restaurant’s discerning diners. “The restaurant will serve fine Indian food that showcases the philosophies of pushing boundaries and combining really good quality Sardinian produce, which will be given the spice treatment from different parts of India,” says Vivek. “We will also be using a tandoor oven, which I wouldn’t imagine is widely used in Sardinia. It will be a blend of the authentic and the innovative.” The Cinnamon Club at Forte Village will be Vivek’s sixth restaurant, as well as the first to open outside of England. Despite his success as both a chef and a businessman, it’s a wonder Vivek has opened any restaurants given the meandering route he took into catering. “To be honest, I fell into it,” he says. “I didn’t set out being interested in cooking; I was more a consumer than a producer.” Vivek’s unlikely path into catering began when he left his home in Asansol in West Bengal to attend a hotel school in Delhi for three years. He then beat thousands of hopefuls to land a job at the renowned Oberoi Hotel Group, and it was here that cooking first piqued his interest. “My first job was at the best company – the Oberoi Hotel Group – where I was on a kitchen training programme. That was when it became clear that I was going to become a chef. “Rather than being in engineering (like his father) or medicine or defence, I ended up in a field that people knew little about, certainly from the background I came from. “Things are changing, but hospitality is not at the top of most Indian parents’ lists of professions. However, over the years they’ve more than come around to it!”

fortevillage.com 52-53 Vivek Singh forte 2019 v4.indd 53

The essence of our cooking is evolving modern-Indian Vivek perfected his art all over India, with stints at hotels in Kolkata and Mumbai before he was appointed head chef at The Rajvilas in Jaipur. He opened his first restaurant – The Cinnamon Club in London – in 2001, introducing a new style of Indian cuisine to curry-loving Brits. “At The Cinnamon Club, the ethos was to challenge the status quo. The appetite for Indian food was insatiable, but from a chef’s point of view there was so much more room to be innovative and creative. “Because I grew up in lots of different parts of India I picked up things from different places, which is why we don’t have a specific north, south, east, Muslim or Christian influence. “The essence of our cooking is evolving modern-Indian, and pan-Indian in its inspiration in terms of how we look at recipes. We take Indian inspiration, spices and cooking techniques and combine that with the best local, seasonal produce that money can buy.”

Four more restaurants – three in London and one in Oxford – opened before Forte Village invited Vivek to open a restaurant at the resort. “At Forte Village, there will be a small à la carte, as well as a tasting menu. We have used The Cinnamon Club London as our template because it’s the best fit for Forte Village. The menu will change with the seasons, depending on the availability of the best local produce.” Vivek says the warmer climate of Sardinia will also influence the food that is served at The Cinnamon Club. “We’re instinctive about using ingredients that are cooling for your body in hot climates. In India, we have Scottish-type weather up in Kashmir and Sri Lankan weather in the south. In the north of India we’d use chilli to warm you up and in the south we use pepper, which makes you perspire, and that makes you cooler. It’s a bit like natural air-conditioning. “We’ll be playing a lot with savoury spices, such as carom seed, which breaks down fat and aids digestion, so we’ll be using the medicinal properties of spices. “The most challenging aspect of opening any new restaurant is the location – you want somewhere that suits the audience,” he says. “Forte Village is a phenomenal location with access to an excellent clientele right on your doorstep. I’m really looking forward to it.”

GOURMET PERFECTION Take Italy’s most famous dish, give it a unique twist using the finest ingredients and what do you get? Gourmet pizza!

A

sublime union of raw ingredients, innovative recipes following meticulous research and traditional cooking techniques have all come together to create the very latest trend in food at Forte Village – the gourmet pizza, made by authentic pizzaiuoli, the master Italian pizza-makers. From this year, this seductive gastronomic treat will be among the ‘star’ offerings at the best resort in the world. Gourmet pizza is a more sophisticated and elaborate reinterpretation of the true Pizza Neapolitan, which represents the food heritage of an entire country. The Neapolitan art of pizza twirling is now on the coveted UNESCO list of ‘intangible heritage’ The most famous Italian dish has been given a twist at Forte Village,

becoming an expression of creativity and sophistication. The golden rules of gourmet pizza are authenticity and goodness, using excellent seasonal produce to create a unique delicacy with a myriad of colours, flavours and aromas that are brought to life from carefully selected ingredients. Ingredients that are made in Italy and that can boast the DOP brand, the IGP or Slow Food status. From flour to oil, from cooking techniques to serving, nothing is left to chance: elasticity, gluten resistance and starch consistency are fundamental in the preparation of the dough, which must be digestible, light and exquisitely tasty. The use of high-quality ingredients is essential from the beginning so that a pizza can be defined as gourmet. The leavened base, unique and unrepeatable in the repertoire of each

master pizzaiuolo, already represents a work of gastronomic art. Added to this are expertly assembled, irresistible toppings that make pizza gourmet an expression of inspiration and creativity for a constantly evolving product.

‘Luxury is the simplicity, the uniqueness and the authenticity of true emotion’ Ivana Ciabatti, Managing Director of Italpreziosi, talks about her luxury gold leaf beverage and chocolate brand, and her successful precious metals business 56 56-57 IvanaSciabatti forte 2019 v4.indd 56

fortevillage.com 23/04/2019 21:29

Q What is luxury for Ivana Ciabatti? It is an emotion, a unique experience that involves all the senses; absolute quality and beauty combined in perfect union. Luxury is the simplicity, the uniqueness and the authenticity of a true emotion. Something that is not only tangible but that can involve a person too. There is much talk about the Italian lifestyle and we have tried to encapsulate what truly characterises it in our products: research, elegance, creativity, the charm of the eye-catching landscape, the splendour and grace of the architecture and the refinement of the most authentic flavours of our land.

Q Your famous gold leaf meets the best Made in Italy produce. It’s a combination that creates excellence. At the heart of our products is careful, in-depth research of the best Made in Italy producers. We harness the best practices of the sector, using both the passion and the knowledge of our craftsmen. The Foglia d’Oro is our signature. It’s what distinguishes us and makes these products unique and unforgettable. Our products must speak to the heart and mind of the consumer, to their most authentic passions. The greater the appeal a product has to its owner, the stronger and more intense the emotions it arouses. The gold leaf in our products create a real “gold experience”, an expression of contemporary luxury and beauty that transcends time.

Q What stories do your creations tell? Our products tell stories that arise from ancient traditions, from the hands of artisans who, with love and passion, create something unique. They tell the story of Italian creativity, of beauty, of the preciousness and ethics of our raw materials. Gold makes the story even more magical and brings us into my world, a world I have been cultivating with passion for years and which is transformed into such a light and delicate material as the Golden Leaf. Our products tell a dream – the goal each time is to surprise ourselves and consumers, to appeal to the heart and mind by giving them a positive and unforgettable experience.

Q The mission of your brand is ambitious and aims to evoke the refined atmosphere of Italian lifestyle. How do you achieve this? By starting from the present and embellishing our products with inspirations from the past, from the Renaissance of Catherine de’ Medici. By creating products that want to make people dream, that want them to go beyond what they see. Ivana Ciabatti wants to show the world how much the creativity of our country, the quality of our products and the beauty of our dreams can make you fall in love and become excited by unique

fortevillage.com 56-57 IvanaSciabatti forte 2019 v4.indd 57

luxury experiences. In Italy, we are surrounded by beauty. We breathe beauty and we feed on it in all its forms.

Q How do tradition and innovation come together in your precious metals company, Italpreziosi? Italpreziosi is based in Arezzo, a city that has been able to combine a 1,000-year-old goldsmith tradition with the use of the most advanced technologies. The many facets of the goldsmith’s craft leaves me speechless, as does their passion, creativity and technological competence. Italy is still at the forefront of this sector. It is natural to combine the tradition of gold working, which comes even from the Etruscan civilisation, with innovation that is increasingly fundamental to remain competitive in a global market.

Q You are a very successful entrepreneur. How was Italpreziosi born? The company was founded in 1984. Everything stems from my vision and from the courage to experiment with new paths. I combined ethical and sustainable business practices, with particular attention to human dignity, accompanied with passion, energy and enthusiasm. The company’s interests are varied: the mining and refining of precious metals, the production and trading of investment gold and the trading of precious metals. The company boasts numerous certifications. The most recent is the “Good Delivery” gold refining status issued by LBMA, a certification that has only been achieved by three Italian companies and less than 70 worldwide. Moreover, Italpreziosi is the only private contributor to Bloomberg and Reuters, and contributes to the official price of gold. We closed 2017 with a €1.88 billion turnover; 2018 will be about 3 per cent higher. We aim to increase these numbers and strengthen our commitment to ethical gold, which respects every phase of the

supply chain, from extraction to sale, both from the point of view of human, social and environmental rights. It’s a path that we’ve been pursuing for over 10 years with Goldlake IP and has allowed us to obtain the most important certifications.

Q Its activity ranges from startups in the fields of IT, robotics and food luxury. How are your projects born? Computer science and robotics are the two cornerstones of the so-called “Fourth industrial revolution” or “Industry 4.0”. The very concept of industry 4.0 passes through the idea of “smart factory”: an idea of a company that uses new technologies better and better, which allows to give better and better customer services and with a view to environmental sustainability. Aligning with this world, actively entering to be part of it, is not only strategic for Italpreziosi but also of vital importance. As far as food luxury is concerned, even here, on closer inspection, the very concept of luxury in food is both ancient and new: if my land, Tuscany, boasts a culinary tradition that is second to none in the world, it is always more evident in the industrialized world as the luxury of the future will be genuine food.

Q Do you still have dreams to make? Our country has taken away from children the ability to dream, it must be returned to them. In my life I have always dreamed of a useful job for an important goal, in which the centrality of the human being and his well-being are the profit itself. Combining social and ethical commitment to create productivity, innovation and wealth. A dream that I have always cultivated, a mission shared by all with a strong union, responsibility and freedom, where participation, everyone’s contribution is essential for common growth. I also undertake to bring young talents back to Italy who have fled abroad to work. So yes, I have so many dreams still to come. I have so much enthusiasm, so much energy in developing projects and making the business grow, combining profit with a contribution in terms of well-being for the entire community.

But if you are curious to discover the many different facets of Sardinia, eager to be enchanted by the wonders of this island, then drag yourself away from the magical atmosphere of the resort for a few hours and immerse yourself in a riot of colour, traditional folk costumes, enchanting melodies, like those of the launeddas, and devotional songs. The goccius – the Feast of Sant’Efisio – has been going for more than three centuries. It runs from May 1-4 and is an evocative celebration of the region. It is a wonderful journey into the culture of the Sardinian people, who come together in a collective group to celebrate their faith and profound spirituality. “It all starts on the morning of May 1 from the churchyard of the Stampace church,” explains Francesco Cacciuto, the youngest President of the Archconfraternity of Sant’Efisio. “Thousands faithfully

fortevillage.com 58-59 St Efisio forte 2019 v4.indd 59

gather to witness the departure of the procession that winds through the maze of narrow streets of the historic district.” The procession is a unique and extraordinarily spectacle. Cagliari is literally taken over by more than 30,000 people who come to see the majestic procession of 3,500 people, each dressed in traditional folk costume. The island’s devotion to Saint Efisio is strong, lively and all-encompassing. The faithful come from all parts of Sardinia, as do 200 knights from Campidanesi, Militia and Guardiania. Every year, tourists fill the streets and squares

to see the region pay homage to Sant’Efisio. Alessandro Ligas, Archconfraternity Secretary Onfaloneg of Sant’Efisio, says: “The feast attracts those who want to be redeemed, but even atheists who come along are fascinated by its colour and often convert after having breathed the inexplicable force of faith during the days of the party.” The aim is to make the feast accessible to the faithful, but also attract tourists to the procession, highlighting important churches and places of worship, and promoting the landscape, archaeological, historical and cultural areas all the way from Cagliari to Nora. “For years we have awaited recognition by UNESCO for the celebration of Sant’Efisio to become an ‘intangible heritage’. And work will soon begin on the devotional path,” says Francesco. “A splendid path full of spirituality that, from the churches of Giorgin or Su Loi, lead to Sarroch, Villa San Pietro, until arriving in Pula. Then the return to Stampace and thousands of people who crowd the streets to welcome the holy warrior in celebration.”

Cagliari has places where you can relax, eat, sightsee and shop. But it’s also a very spiritual city, from the church of Sant’Efisio in Stampace to the neighbouring churches of San Saturnino and San Lucifero, straddling the central streets of Dante and Sonnino. There is also the Cappuccini chapel in Viale Frà Ignazio, a wonderful place in which to contemplate and meditate.

WEDDINGS

A strong marriage Forte Village, according to Angelo Garini, wedding and event designer, is ‘paradise on earth’, and the perfect setting

the interior decor and the prestigious cuisine. Forte Village can also compete on other fronts too, such as a crystalline sea that is the envy of many other international destinations. Forte Village has many attractions, such as numerous restaurants and the capacity to host large groups. One area where we are seeing an increase in destination tourism is from India, where the economy is booming and whose inhabitants are discovering Forte Village thanks to some famous Bollywood actors who have chosen it as the place to celebrate their weddings. Forte Village is, in short, a place where you can organise parties with a luxurious backdrop, a place where fantasies can come true and a place that is perfectly equipped to meet all your entertainment needs, including artistic performances.

ngelo Garini: architect, wedding and event designer, publisher, author and well-known face of Italian television... many varied roles for one person. He inherited his passion for design, art collecting and antiques from his grandfather, who was a renowned architect in the 1990s. Angelo’s family background includes a history of receiving guests and organising events, such as his greatgreat-grandmother who held receptions in the Asolo Palace, to which Carducci was often a guest. Angelo also has thank-you notes from D’Annunzio, once a guest of his great-grandparents.

Q How is it you have so many different aspects to your career? Let’s say that eclecticism has distinguished my whole life. It is for this reason that not only do I like doing different things, but I am always looking for new professional challenges to make my journey as varied as possible. But I must point out that what looks like a set of diverse professional fields is nothing but the development of different aspects of the same philosophy of life, which is based on the desire to produce beauty.

Q So Forte Village is the place for you? Exactly. Over the past few months I have had the great pleasure of staying there on several occasions and this has meant that I have come to appreciate its many different facets and its great potential. It is a place where you can really forget about your everyday worries and immerse yourself totally in a dimension beyond space and time. It’s a place where I immediately felt at home.

Q Is it the right place to organise weddings and events? Absolutely. It’s a venue that gives great pleasure and satisfaction, whether it be for a private party or a wedding, and is a unique venue for those who would like to choose this place for their special moment.

72 72-73 wedding forte 2019 copy 2 v4.indd 72

Let’s start with the event par excellence, the wedding. Italian couples looking to get married often want tradition, allied to a modern ceremony, and are looking for a place that can provide a unique scenario for their wedding. Many couples want to marry in Italy because marriage is, first and foremost, a family event. But there is also a growing desire by couples to make their wedding a special moment that may last several days and that can involve friends in a real journey of experience. Forte Village has a strong Italian identity and its style, tradition and cuisine offers an ‘Earthly Paradise’ that combines an incredible tropical backdrop with a turquoise sea that can only be found in Sardinia.

Q And for foreign couples? Foreign couples, unlike Italians, have always been accustomed to the idea of choosing a place away from home for their marriage. And Italy is at the top of the list of favourite destinations. Our competitors are destinations such as the Caribbean or Polynesia. However, here at Forte Village there are some unique attractions: the Italian style that we find in the architecture,

Q What new projects are you currently working on? I am dedicating a lot of time and energy to a series of formats designed for the web, especially for our YouTube channel gariniimmagina.com. Most millennials view video content on the internet so I am creating engaging and educational content for that platform in line with my philosophy. I am the author and producer of programmes that present the various aspects of my profession, such as ‘The Wedding School’ channel, which is the first talent show dedicated to wedding planners. I am also working on programmes dedicated to the art of receiving guests, along with table and home design, and a talk show involving people’s experiences of travelling to particular destinations.

Q We could therefore see Forte Village featured in one of these shows? Absolutely, and with great pleasure.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Barbie!

Astronauts, painters and scientists: the new models of real women who can inspire our daughters

H

appy birthday, Barbie! She may not look it, but the most beloved doll of all time has turned 60. To celebrate this milestone, Barbie has a new mission: to inspire girls and encourage them to fulfil their dreams! Since 1959, Barbie has been an inspiration. From princess to president, from astronaut to zoologist, she has shown girls that they can be anything they want to be. Barbie has had more than 200 professions and continues to help unlock the potential that exists in every child, emphasising careers in which women are under-represented, and through role models and “sheroes”. There are Barbie dolls of astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti, the first Italian woman to be part of the crew of the European Space Agency, and Sara Gama, captain of the Juventus women’s soccer team and the Italian national team, as well as President of the Commission for the Development of Female Football in Italy. There are also Barbies of US film director Patty Jenkins, snowboarder Chloe Kim, Australian environmentalist Bindi Irwin, British boxing champion Nicola Adams, Turkish windsurfer Çağla Kubat, French Michelin-starred chef Hélène Darroze and Hui Ruoqi, who led the Chinese volleyball team to gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Then there’s German designer and entrepreneur Leyla Piedayesh, Mexican golfer Lorena Ochoa, Polish journalist Martyna Wojciechowska, Chinese actress Xiaotong Guan, Yuan Yuan Tan, prima ballerina with the San Francisco Ballet, and Spanish fashion designer Vicky

Martin Berrocal, creative director of fashion brand Victoria. To celebrate her 60th birthday, Barbie is preparing to celebrate a new batch of “sheroes” who can inspire a new generation of young girls. It’s a commendable initiative, but it doesn’t stop at just creating new dolls. The #MoreRoleModels campaign is just one of the many initiatives that Barbie is behind to celebrate her 60th birthday. There’s also the “Dream Gap Project”, which is designed to increase awareness and draw attention to the reasons that sometimes prevent girls from expressing themselves and reaching their full potential. In recent years, several studies have identified that, from the age of five, girls are less likely than boys to consider themselves brilliant and successful, and begin to lose confidence in their abilities. Cultural stereotypes, implicit prejudices and the way girls and women are portrayed in the media reinforce the problem. In the United States this phenomenon is called the “Dream Gap”, but similar situations occur all over the world. In Italy, Barbie decided to do her part by commissioning research at the Department of Sociology and Social Research of the University of Milan-Bicocca, in collaboration with the Gender Culture Interuniversity

Research Centre. What do children and girls imagine about their future? What colour are their dreams? This research aims to investigate how young girls and children imagine their future professions to be. Are their dreams, their aspirations and their desires influenced by gender stereotypes? If so, how? These are the strategic questions being asked by researchers Carmen Leccardi, Sveva Magaraggia and Tiziana Pirola, who, unsurprisingly, are all women. Women from the past as well as the present can be inspirational. Which is why three of today’s iconic Barbie “historical” dolls are heroines of the past: painter Frida Kahlo, Amelia Earhart, the first aviator to cross the Atlantic Ocean, and Katherine Johnson, a pioneer in mathematical sciences. All of these women broke down race and gender barriers. This celebration of Barbie is an excellent reason to choose one of our Barbie Experience packages: from the exclusive Barbie VIP Package with a themed room to the fun activities hosted in the Barbie Activity Centre at Forte Village. This summer everything is possible with Barbie at Forte Village. She may be 60, but she looks great on it!

To celebrate her 60th, Barbie is launching a new batch of ‘sheroes’ 76 76-77 Barbie forte 2019 v4.indd 76

Wonderland

Where children can socialise and learn through play by experimenting with art, sport and nature

onderland has been specially designed for children of all ages who are guests at Forte Village. It is an oasis within the resort that is entirely dedicated to children – a place where they can take part in a wide range of activities, socialise with other children and learn under the watchful eyes of our dedicated staff. The range of activities is vast and caters for every taste and all ages, starting with the theatre workshop, which is open to children aged three and upwards. The workshop gives children the chance to increase their self-confidence by teaching them to dance and act. Staying in the wold of the arts, the Arts & Crafts workshop is open to children aged two and upwards. It provides the perfect platform for freeing up their imagination

fortevillage.com 78-79 Kids forte 2019 v5.indd 79

and learning practical skills. Led by specialised staff, the workshop allows children to try their hand at drawing, ceramics and painting, creating a work of art every day that they can then keep as a souvenir. For parents who love nature and who want their children to learn all about it, nothing beats a visit to the vegetable garden. Run by a gardening expert, children can discover how typical Sardinian crops are grown. As an educational workshop, it encourages children to socialise and to appreciate nature. Here, they are taught the basics of gardening and how to take care of plants The most popular part of Wonderland is undoubtedly Mario’s Village, a miniature village that is every child’s dream and has been designed for every age group from three upwards. The village is dedicated to the Forte Village mascot – Mario the parrot – and consists of nine houses, each with a specific theme. There’s a gas station, a beauty salon, a restaurant, a supermarket,a library, a cinema and a town hall, among others. Children can play free in these areas, although staff are always on hand to supervise and to help them

enjoy themselves in safety. For those who want to cool off between games there is a paddling pool, where children can have safe fun in the water: the pools are constantly monitored by lifeguards to ensure their safety. There are two pools where our young guests will always find something to entertain them. The staff continuously involve children in water activities and help them to meet new friends. There is also fun without limits at the Aquapark, including water slides. And a pirate ship and water cannons, which have anti-slip floors. For older children there are six full-size slides in a dedicated pool area and a five-lane lap pool that is ideal for those who want to practice and improve their swimming technique. Lastly, are your children still very small? Then the Forte Village Nursery is for them. At this specially created facility, you can leave your toddlers with qualified childcare professionals who will ensure that they are relaxed and have fun. The Nursery is for children up to the age of three and is equipped with lots of fun things for them to do in safety. It has cribs and a space dedicated to where mothers can nurse their babies Forte Village is a place where the whole family, irrespective of age, can enjoy a relaxing and unforgettable holiday.
