Dear Guests

T “Forte Village is undergoing a major upgrade thanks to a significant investment and restructuring plan for the next two years. The resort will have a new body but the same soul”

he first piece of news I have, in our third edition of UniQ magazine, is really special. I am proud to announce that Forte Village is undergoing a major upgrade thanks to a significant investment and restructuring plan for the next two years. The resort will have a new body but the same soul. It will have the same core values – elegance, luxury and the extensive choice of facilities and services – but all of this will be to an even higher standard. You may wonder why we have decided to improve that which has already been so successful. Every year since 1999 Forte Village has been named as the ‘World’s Leading Resort’. This year it has picked up several other great prizes, including the ‘Best Hotels for Leisure Facilities’ by Condé Nast Traveller; the ‘World’s Leading Green Resort’ and the ‘World’s Leading Sports Academy’. The resort also received the Prix Villegiature, the most coveted award within the French hotel industry. Even so, to be world number one, to be truly excellent, to meet the ever higher standards of industry judges and to be in a position to face increased competition in luxury travel today, you can’t stand still. Our goals are neatly summarised on page 12. We have revolutionised the famous fourth floor of the Hotel Castello and our Imperial and Presidential suites offer guests a stunning new place to stay. We have created a splendid new villa, the Villa Chiara, which complements the masterpieces that are the Forte Villa and the Villa Lydia. We have won a prestigious Michelin star in recognition of the fine cuisine of Antonello Arrus, our Belvedere restaurant chef. We have launched two new Sports Academies – the Boxing and Netball Academies – so our guests can train with the champions of the sport and have the chance to become champions themselves. This year we also introduce new professionals to the resort including Matt Roberts, personal trainer to the stars of the world of fashion, business and politics; and Professor Giorgio Calabrese, the renowned dietician, expert in the science of nutrition and creator of the Mediterranean Diet. His talents will be a welcome addition to the Thalasso del Forte spa that is not only beautiful but is also a place to discover renewed energy and invigorate your entire immune system. In a phrase, we want to offer the best, always. With thanks and very best wishes

Lorenzo Giannuzzi Managing Director, Eleganzia Group

FACE THE MUSIC A whole host of stars will be playing at the Piazza Maria Luigia this summer

RICCHI E POVERI July 18th, August 8th, August 22nd One of Italy’s longest established and best loved acts, Ricchi e Poveri had their first hit in 1970 around the time when bands such as The Mamas & the Papas were big on the music scene, and this gentle, tuneful hippy sound had a profound influence on them. Since then, they’ve created some of the most popular Italian songs of the 1980s and 1990s, including ‘Mamma Maria’, ‘Made in Italy’, ’M’innamoro Di Te’ and many others. One of the most famous Italian pop groups in Europe and Latin America, they have sold over 20 million records.

“Glamour, energy and great songs – Matia Bazar have it all. Formed in 1975, the group exploded onto the music scene”

RICCARDO FOGLI

PUPO

MATIA BAZAR

July 25th It was The Beatles who inspired Riccardo Fogli to get into music and, since 1973, he has produced a series of greatly loved songs including hits from his album Ciao Amore, Come Stai? ‘Malinconia’ and ‘Storie Di Tutti I Giorni’. With his relaxed, easy listening sound he has represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest. His album Collezione sold nearly a million copies in Western Europe, Japan and the former Soviet Union.

August 11th Enzo Ghinazzi, or Pupo, as he is known to his millions of fans, has been an Italian favourite for nearly 40 years. His career took off in 1975 with ‘Ti Scriverò’. This was followed by hits such as ‘Gelato Al Cioccolato’, ‘Su Di Noi,’ ‘Ciao’ and ‘Firenze Santa Maria Novella’. His gentle but upbeat style makes Pupo the ideal sing-along artist and it’s little wonder that he’s been so popular in Italy and around the world for decades.

August 14th Glamour, energy and great songs – Matia Bazar have it all. Formed in 1975, the group exploded onto the music scene with popular hits such as ‘Stasera Che Sera’, ‘Cavallo Bianco’, ‘Solo Tu’ and ‘Mister Mandarino’. The albums Matia Bazar and Gran Bazar demonstrated the band’s ability to create well-crafted and polished pop songs, driven by the versatility of Antonella Ruggiero’s powerful voice.

BODY BEAUTIFUL The Castel Monastero Spa now offers the services of a renowned nutritionist, state-of-the-art weight loss and cosmetic treatments

He’s world renowned for his innovative, effective skincare and now Dr Howard Murad is offering Forte Village guests the opportunity to benefit from his years of experience

Q A

What services will you be offering at Forte Village? Anyone coming to Forte Village is very lucky to enjoy this special piece of paradise: beautiful beaches, excellent service, great food and – especially – because they can access the Terme del Forte, where we offer the highest quality treatments for any skin concern. Thanks to the help of my colleague Dr Cerina and his staff, we will be able to treat any skin type. We achieve great results on aged skin, against acne, redness and irritation, cellulite, stretch marks and any other skin imperfection.

Q

What advice would you give to people who want to get a tan but want to minimise the aging effect it has on their skin? If you want a beautiful tan but to prevent aging skin too, I suggest you to use our Age-proof Suncare products that protect from UV rays and damage including wrinkles, age spots and skin diseases. Of course, once back at home I recommend a bronzer, like the Hybrids Absolute Bronzing Boost Broad Spectrum, which gives you the deepest tan in minutes, whilst protecting from sun damage, and you can remove it easily whenever you wish.

solution because it prevents damage and resists water for a lasting defence. Do not forget sunglasses to protect your eyes.

Dr Howard Murad introduced The Cellular Water Principle® in his book Wrinkle-Free Forever. He shared more research in The Cellulite Solution and is working on a third book. A certified dermatologist, pharmacist and Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine (Dermatology) at UCLA, Dr. Murad is one of the world’s authorities on skin health. He has changed the field of dermatology, his pioneering work includes creating the first line of doctor-branded skincare Dr Murad continues to admit patients and has seen more than 50,000 throughout his career.

Q A

What in particular should people with paler/fairer skin do? Fair skinned people are very sensitive to the sun and should do all of the above, plus wear Ultraviolet Protection Factor clothing to screen the rest of the body from the sun. They should also reapply sunscreens liberally and often, at least every hour.

Q A

More generally, what new anti-ageing treatments are you offering? What new scientific discoveries do they use? People should understand that the skin is connected to all parts of the body so you can look after everything through better skincare. This doesn’t just mean sunscreens but also better plant-based nutrition and, most of all, better stress management. There is no better place to do all of this than at the Forte Village Spa. In my research centre we are doing lots of studies to encourage a more youthful you, mostly by studying stress to understand how we can reduce daily levels. I have developed what I call ‘insights’ and these are included in my book Creating a Healthy Life.

ith state-of-the-art health and wellbeing treatments amid the rugged beauty of the Tuscan hills, the Castel Monastero Spa has long been popular with those looking to indulge body and mind. Services introduced this summer will enhance this yet further. One of the most exciting developments will see renowned nutrition expert Dr Giorgio Calabrese on site. Professor of Food and Human Nutrition at the University of Eastern Piedmont of Alessandria and at the University of Turin and Messina, Dr Calabrese runs medical studies in Asti, Turin, Milan and Rome. Dr Calabrese is also an active member of the New York Academy of Science and the American Association for the Advancement of Science of Washington, was a member of the European Food Safety Authority in Brussels from 2002 to 2008 as well as being the author of national and international publications. “Giorgio Calabrese is admired around the world for his ground-breaking work and we’re delighted that he’s agreed to work with us,” says Spa Manager Francesca Nuvolone. “I’m very much looking forward to seeing our clients benefit from his vast experience.” Dr Calabrese will be offering Castel Monastero Spa clients advice on weight loss, detox and food intolerances. As well as benefiting from his extensive research, visitors to the Spa will be able to ask him about their own food and nutrition issues. Weight loss is one subject that concerns more and more women and men these days.

Q A

What should people do before, during and after they sunbathe? My advice is that before, during and after people should eat colourful raw fruit and vegetables. These are naturally rich in water to rehydrate you but also antioxidants and anti- inflammatories to minimise damage from the sun. Of course, you need to apply sunscreens prior to sun exposure and, any time you begin to feel the heat during sunbathing, Water Resistant Broad Spectrum Sunscreen is the perfect

“We’ve noticed a growing demand to help people with their weight,” says Francesca, “so we’ve put together treatments that use the latest technology.” Castel Monastero has also begun an exclusive collaboration with Villa Stuart, the internationally renowned medical centre for aesthetic plastic surgery, based in Rome. At Villa Stuart you’ll find all the classic women’s options available including breast enhancement and reduction, inner thigh lifts, liposuction and anti-aging treatments. The medical team also offer a range of treatments aimed at men who want to look and feel younger and more confident. Having undergone their procedure at Villa Stuart, guests retire to Castel Monastero to benefit from the beautiful settings and total privacy that it provides. Tucked away in the Tuscan Hills, Castel Monastero and its spa is the most sought-after destination in Italy for those looking to recuperate after aesthetic remodelling and rejuvenation operations. In these luxurious, tranquil and very private settings, guests are able to recover from their operations and procedures and take time to allow their bodies and minds to completely relax. The Castel Monastero post-surgery packages offer peace of mind and complete discretion to those who want to look their best.

H I G H T EC H A ND H EA LT H Y A new service at Forte Village allows guests to use the latest rehabilitation technology FOR NEARLY TWO DECADES Forte Village has been attracting people to its professional facilities, expertise and leading wellbeing treatments at the Thalasso del Forte spa. This year Forte Village will be offering a new service. The resort is part of the Villa Stuart network, the internationally renowned clinic and FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence specialising in diagnostics, surgery, rehabilitation, training and recovery for top sportspeople. The Villa Stuart clinic has worked with teams including Roma and Juventus, Paris Saint German, Manchester City and CSKA Mosca. Now, like the great sporting professionals, Forte Village guests have the chance to get a detailed diagnosis. They can then begin a personalised rehabilitation programme in the splendid Thalasso del Forte spa, famous for its revolutionary thalassotherapy technique. Another new facility is the ‘water gym’, based on the original Selam project. Exclusive to the Thalasso del Forte spa, Selam reminds the body that it was designed to move – to run, jump, throw and climb – rather than to sit for long periods at a time. With a tower, wall bars, platform and body bar, all mounted in the high-density saline water, the Selam Antigravity Water Training System allows low-impact rehabilitation exercises, speeding up the journey to fitness. And there’s one other important feature that Forte Village can offer anyone looking for a complete and long lasting rehabilitation – glorious sunshine, blue skies, fragrant Mediterranean gardens and our wonderful, top-quality Italian hospitality. It’s just what the physio ordered.

INTERVIEW

Interview

Tough, determined and as demanding of himself as he is of others, Fabio Capello, footballer and now coach of one of the most famous teams in the world, has perhaps done more than anyone else to challenge the image of Italians as indolent and lacking the spirit needed to win. UniQ talks to him

Over the course of your career, who of all the players you’ve managed would you say you’ve enjoyed coaching the most? I’ve trained so many players that all my favourites would probably be enough for two or three teams! But if I had to choose I’d go with Paolo Maldini and Billy Costacurta. I’ve seen them grow as players from when they were just 14 years old to become champions. It’s been a great pleasure for me to see their development over the years.

ON THE UNICREDIT UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TROPHY TOUR

A B SOLUT ELY FA B I O

Q

You’ve recently signed a contract with the Russian national team which means that not only are you preparing for this year’s World Cup in Brazil but also for the 2018 event in Russia. Then what? Once the 2018 World Cup is over it will be time to stop.

A Q A

Q

Q

A

But you said that in 2006. And in 2008 you said that you’d retire and devote yourself to travel, which is your passion. I love to travel and I told the truth when I said that. But then I received an offer from Russia that was so exciting that I couldn’t refuse. I need constant challenges.

Let’s talk about your early life. Your football career began with your father, Guerrino, who was an elementary school teacher. The legendary Gipo Viani, manager of AC Milan, wanted to bring you to the Club as a young boy but your father had already made a commitment to SPAL and could not bring himself to break his word. Stubbornness, pride and a sense of honour are all qualities that you have shown as both a footballer and coach – have you inherited them? Yes absolutely. My father was a great reference point for me, even though I left home at 15 to play football. His life story is an example of strength and courage. He survived the Nazi concentration camps and came home weighing just 40 pounds. He taught me that your word is your bond, that a handshake is as good as a signature.

A

A positive attitude, tactical intelligence, determination, the ability to engender team spirit and to understand the psychology of the individual – which of these qualities has most helped you in your career as a coach? All are important. In football the first thing you have to know is how to figure out who you have available to you, then you need to instil team spirit. But my real secret is all in one word: respect. Respect for everyone. I always say to my kids that if they treat a waiter badly they should think: ‘This man could be my father.’ Would they like it if someone treated their father like that?

AT WORK ON THE PITCH

Q

There are a lot of Italian waiters in England and you made around 30,000 of them very happy on 14th November 1973. Tell us about that. We were at Wembley. Italy beat England for the first time on their own turf, winning 1-0 thanks to a goal from me. For days the British tabloids had been demanding that a victory, which they assumed would be English, should be dedicated to Princess Anne, daughter of the

A

22 fortevillage.com

Queen, who was getting married on that day. But they were also saying that in the stands there would be 30,000 Italian waiters, because that was what Italians who came to Britain did back then. Well, even after so many years I can still experience the exact emotion that I felt when I scored that goal. It was for all those 30,000 Italians – it was the best gift I could give to my fellow countrymen – and it was pure happiness.

Q A Q A

Yet you are often seen by football fans as hard, icy, impenetrable and impervious to emotion. With my close friends and my family I am like a completely different person.

And, as mentioned, travel is also a great passion of yours Yes, I’ve travelled to every corner of the world for work so I should probably be tired of it. But for me, the travel is a like a holiday – I can only sit still for a while. I love discovering the ruins of ancient civilisations and one of the reasons why I love Sardinia is

fortevillage.com

“One of the reasons why I love Sardinia is that you cannot match the beautiful sea and culture” that you cannot match the beautiful sea and culture, such as visiting the Nuraghe (the ancient buildings of Sardinia) and, of course, to come back to Forte Village.

Q

Back to football then – you’ve trained many of them in different countries: Italy, Spain, England, Russia. How do they differ in your opinion? People assume that, basically, players are all the same wherever they’re from. But there are actually significant differences, especially in their lives off the field. To simplify it: Italians adore the discos and women, the British love their pubs and they like a little bit too much to drink. The Russians? They’re still new to me, but it seems to be true that they are a bit parvenu or nouveau-riche.

A

Q

For several years you’ve looked away from Italy and been very critical of it. Do you see a light at the end of the tunnel for our country? Since I’ve lived outside Italy I’ve actually felt more Italian than I ever have before. I’m sorry that the country is going through this big crisis but now I’m glad that it’s got a new young leader who has ideas and enthusiasm, someone who does not think only of his own backyard but the good of the country.

A

Q A

So it’s fair to say you’re not a great fan of Silvio Berlusconi then? No I’m not but I do like Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. I don’t just look at someone’s political colours.

Q A

Finally, if not football, what would you be doing today? I’d be an aircraft pilot. Aviation is my other great passion. Unfortunately I have never managed to sit at the controls of an aircraft, but one day, who knows?

ROCK CHIC at Forte Village

Their fans include some of the greatest names in popular music. Thanks to an exclusive worldwide deal, the celebrated NOAH guitars are now available at Forte Village – and they can even be customised

I

taly has long been known for its fashion, its cars and its furniture. With its connotations of fine design and excellent craftsmanship, ‘Made in Italy’ has long been a highly attractive label. Mention Italian guitars, though, and even the most design-conscious among us might draw a blank. And yet Italy is home to one of the world’s most celebrated guitar manufacturers. NOAH Guitars started life just over 20 years ago in a cellar in Milan, the vision of three friends who wanted to produce an instrument without any compromise on quality. Over the years NOAH’s fans have included Lou Reed, Bruce Springsteen, Sting and David

fortevillage.com

‘The Edge’ Howell Evans, the U2 guitarist. “We’ve brought about an unlikely ‘marriage’ between different types of wood and metal to create a distinct and very appealing new sound,” says Renato Ruatti, one of the founders of NOAH Guitars. “It’s a challenge that we set ourselves and we’ve achieved it: to bring together the two legendary and greatly loved instruments, the Telecaster and the National.” With their sleek lines, striking metallic finish and amazing sound quality, only 100 such guitars have been made and, until now, they’ve only been sold exclusively in person, directly by their makers to a very select group of musicians. However, this year, for the first time ever, NOAH Guitars will be available in a shop – and that shop will be at Forte Village. But owning a NOAH Guitar is not just about choosing one and handing over your money. No, the company has come together with Forte Village to offer guests at the resort an unforgettable experience. Now you can hold in your own hands one of these greatly sought-after instruments, designed and created especially for you. One thing that makes a NOAH guitar so exclusive

and so much in demand is that each one is completely customised to the needs of the person who is going to play it. In the Forte Village shop, it’s possible now, for the first time, to view the latest NOAH models up close. Not only that but, thanks to this special partnership between Forte Village and NOAH Guitars, you can ask for a personal guitar just the way you want it. This means that you can choose the design of the body, the neck type and even personalise your guitar with your name engraved on it. Renato Ruatti adds: “We’ve created a unique sound, produced by wood and metal. But a NOAH guitar is not just an object that makes music – it’s also a great asset on stage. The reflective quality of the polished aluminium surface means that it acts like a mirror, reflecting the lights as well as the sound to the crowds below the stage.” Those who fancy themselves as the next Sting, Lou Reed or Bruce Springsteen can pop along to the Forte Village shop, try out one of these beautifully made musical instruments and imagine themselves on stage with it.

“From every point of view – balance, timbre, the way they handle – they are perfect. I’ve seen other attempts to use metal bodies, but I’ve always found them absurd. This may be the only guitar that you must have. I’m fortunate to have not one but two NOAH guitars” Lou Reed

FITNESS

“The most effective type of cardio training for fat burning is high intensity interval training”

TRAIN OF THOUGHT As the UK’s leading personal trainer and best-selling fitness author, Matt Roberts’ celebrity clients include Naomi Campbell, Trudie Styler and David Cameron’s wife Samantha. Now he’s bringing his fitness expertise to Forte Village and here he offers us his six top tips to help you get bikini fit

1

3

Increasing your metabolism will help you to burn fat faster. You can do this by pushing your body through its comfort zone and using your muscles to burn off the calories... High intensity interval training – that is short bursts of high activity followed by short rest periods – is a great way to achieve this result. Your training sessions should focus on full body resistance work so that one area is not becoming too fatigued or over-tired as this incurs the risk of injury. Combine your resistance work with a cardio element.

SET YOURSELF A REALISTIC GOAL AND TIME FRAME

Decide what you want to do – whether it’s inch loss from the abdomen, weight reduction or simply an overall feeling of fitness and of being more toned. Pick something measurable and achievable to help you to stay on track and reach your goals.

2

4

LEAN LEGS AND GLORIOUS GLUTES

5

ENVIABLE ABS

A pert and perfectly formed bottom is particularly important for many women. Variations on the squat, lunge and step up exercises are the key to toned, beach-ready legs and bums. Using the front (quads), backs (hamstrings) and bum (glutes) all in one exercise allows for maximal effect on many lower body parts from just one exercise. Although leg exercises will hit the glutes you can also look to isolate these muscles to work on their own – really toning your behind.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT

It may sound clichéd but getting your diet right is just as important as your exercise regime. A great technique is to keep a food diary for a week and then look for small changes and improvements that you can make. Try to make one change every week. For example, cut down on rice and carbohydrates and replace them with vegetables, pulses and whole grains. Don’t skip meals.

26

FIRE YOURSELF UP TO BURN FAT

It’s a common misconception that powering out hundreds of crunches will tone the waist and help lose centimetres around the middle. Any form of core exercise will certainly tighten the abdominal area. But, if it’s sitting under layers of fat then the benefits of having this strong, lean core will never be seen. It’s important that you look to

incorporate an element of cardio exercise into your training programme to work on reducing weight around the waist and really allow the work you have done on the abs to show through.

6

CARDIO IS KEY

As well as increasing muscle through resistance and weight-based training to help to sculpt your beach body, more women and men also want to get that lean look that many celebrities manage to achieve. Cardio exercises, such as swimming, running, cycling, skipping or any other exercise that really elevates the heart rate, will go a long way to help remove fat from the body, which in turn makes the muscles more defined and shapely. The most effective type of cardio training for fat burning is high intensity interval training. This means short bursts of intense effort at a more maximal level are followed by periods of rest. It has been shown that the harder and more intensely you work out the more energy your body needs to recover and this consequently means that you are burning more calories. And it proves that with expert advice a little effort can achieve great results.

INTERVIEW

THE SPORTSMAN

Elected president of CONI – the Italian Olympic Committee – last year, Giovanni Malagò has enjoyed a successful career in sports ranging from football to rowing. He talks to UniQ about the Sochi Winter Olympics, the Forte Village sports academies and the future of Italian sport

U

niQ: Mr President, it’s been a year since you took office. Looking back, how have you found the state of Italian sport and what have you achieved so far? Giovanni Malagò: Sport has always been one of the most beautiful aspects of our country. I found a system that was working fine when I took office but I was nominated for the role because I thought that it was necessary to tackle certain problems, to foster generational change, to innovate and to make sure that we stay competitive. I’m very pleased with the response that I’ve had so far from everyone involved. The most important tasks to date have included the reform of the education system. Now the goal is to create closer links between schools and sport and to bring competitive activities to younger people. UniQ: Sport these days is also increasingly seen as a type of philosophy. In 2000 the European commission, as part of the Treaty of Nice, recommended that the EU take account of its social, educational, cultural, ethical and health aspects. Looking back over the last few years, and perhaps looking forward, do you believe that these ideas have been put into practice? Giovanni Malagò: I strongly believe in sport as an agent for development in every aspect of life. Just increasing the rate of physical inactivity by one percent would allow Italy to save €200 million in health care costs. Sport means respecting your opponent as well as loyalty and fair play. It helps reduce distances and overcome differences. Sport educates people and allows them to develop because it involves discipline and rigour and it also promotes social inclusion. UniQ: Italy brought home eight medals from Sochi – two silver and six bronze. It might not seem very satisfactory at first but some observers believe that it sows the seeds for future success. Giovanni Malagò: I would say that the status of a country cannot be measured with its position in the medal table. We improved our results since Vancouver. All the numbers should be read in perspective and this

fortevillage.com

“Sport means respecting your opponent as well as loyalty and fair play. It helps reduce distances and overcome differences. Sport educates people” presents an encouraging view of the future. The eight medals that we took home from Sochi were won by a very young team which bodes well for 2018. I don’t deny that it’s disappointing not to have won a gold but we’ll work to achieve 10 to 13 medals in Pyeongchang. UniQ: Turning to Italy again, the World Cup Women’s Volleyball is the next major event to be held here but there are other big occasions coming up. How ready is the organisation machine? What can we expect? Giovanni Malagò: Italy should be capable of organising big international events that can bring prestige to the country. I’m sure that the World Cup Women’s Volleyball will be a successful event which will create a good impression of Italy internationally. There are

ABOVE: GIOVANNI MALAGÒ MEETS PRESIDENT NAPOLITANO AT THE QUIRINALE PALACE, ROME

high expectations with Marco Bonitta back as coach as he’s synonymous with ability and competitiveness but, while winning is great, the most important thing is to instil a new mindset and to invest in young people so that they become leaders. UniQ: The successful sports academies at Forte Village allow this development to take place. Would you agree? Giovanni Malagò: Every sports enthusiast dreams of playing alongside leading figures in their particular sport. The concept behind the sports academies is excellent because it puts former champions and the best trainers at the service of amateurs. It’s a commendable initiative because it adds value to a holiday and makes it even more exciting.

Giovanni Malagò’s sports career started with five-a-side football, when he won three championships with RCB Roma. He has led the Aniene Rowing Club to victory and has also worked in the world of professional swimming and tennis.

Michelin star winner

F R ES H , N AT U R A L AND D E L IC IO U S

the best recipe for good food He’s the Head Chef at Forte Village’s celebrated Belvedere restaurant and this year was awarded his first Michelin star in recognition of his culinary skill. Antonello Arrus tells us about life in the kitchen

Q A

Antonello, where did your passion for cooking come from? Well, I certainly had no passion for school. By the end of eighth grade I had no desire to study, and so I joined the Istituto Alberghiero hospitality school. As soon as I walked into the kitchen I loved it and I knew that it would become my life. So one step at a time, starting as a commis, I became a chef. It took 15 years of patient, meticulous work, including a lot of discipline and a lot of research.

Q A

How would you describe your philosophy in the kitchen? I would say simplicity – that is the key to the Italian tradition. Being simple and original is my ideal cooking style. It’s about the traditions of my island, Sardinia, and the dishes that we ate every day as I was growing up.

Q A

What are the signature dishes that you serve at your restaurant? Of course I love Italian food, because it always surprises, it’s healthy and it respects and makes the most of the very best ingredients. So, we offer our guests the great summer classics – pastas, risottos, plenty of fish, lots of vegetables and lots of freshness. Then, of course, there’s the international

cuisine. My menu always has two timeless dishes such as Chateaubriand with demi-glace of summer truffles or seared foie gras with seasonal fruits such as strawberries, figs, apricots and paired with toasted brioche with raisins.

Q A

But is it possible to eat well and eat healthily – to enjoy great cuisine and still look good on the beach and by the pool? Sure you can. Our Mediterranean cuisine is ideal for this. In my recipes, I never use saturated fats, but almost exclusively extra virgin olive oil. Sauces are always served on the side, so that each guest can choose whether or not to add them. And then, fundamental to wellbeing is salt. Never use too much, because on the one hand it hides the taste of food and the other it’s harmful to your health. Finally, cooking at low temperature is the perfect way to preserve the fresh flavours of each ingredient.

Q A

Did you ever expect to be awarded the Michelin star? A Michelin star is the dream of every chef. In recent years, thanks to the support that I’ve had from Forte Village, I’ve been able to grow, travel around and hone my style. As far as I’m concerned the star is a reward for us all. It was a wonderful surprise.

Q A

What was the ceremony like where you found out you had won the star? I was invited to a conference in Milan, organised by Michelin, and some of us were called into a room. There the new stars were announced and I was one of them! It’s a great honour and has motivated me to continue with the same dedication and passion.

The Palio horserace and pageant

3

Andrea Bocelli at the Teatro del Silenzio

His voice is one of the most beautiful in the world of opera and this summer Andrea Bocelli will be performing in one of the world’s most stunning venues. On 20th July Castel Monastero guests can hear Mr Bocelli sing at the Teatro del Silenzio, the theatre of silence, a natural amphitheatre in the beautiful hills of Lajatico as part of a three-night package.

It’s one of the most famous – and the most exciting – horseraces in the world. The Palio, in Siena on 2nd July and 16th August every year, probably dates back to medieval times but the ‘modern’ version began in 1656. Ten horses with their bareback riders dressed in the traditional ornate colours of ten of the city’s seventeen contrade – or wards – race around the great Piazza del Campo, in the centre of Siena, three times. The competition is preceded by a magnificent pageant, the Corteo Storico, featuring flag bearers in medieval costumes. The event is exciting, noisy and colourful and attracts people from around the world to see this remarkable spectacle. Now Castel Monastero offers its guests the unique opportunity to view the Palio from an exclusive position – the windows of one of the most beautiful historic apartments overlooking the square. This apartment, owned by one of Siena’s great families, is positioned directly above the start

and finish line, nowhere else offers such a privileged viewpoint. You’ll be accompanied by Castel Monastero staff who are members of the historic contrade and, as you watch the ancient race, you’ll gain fascinating insights and secrets about the event. Enjoy wine, cocktails and a buffet supper of traditional Sienese dishes. The Palio is notoriously crowded but you’ll be smoothly transported between the hotel and apartment. The package also features a minimum three-night stay at the hotel with buffet breakfast and a dinner for two in our restaurant La Cantina, including wine from the cellars. Then, to relax after the excitement of the race, enjoy the ‘acqua benessere’ indoor water area of the Spa, with a Finnish sauna, Turkish bath and toning hydro massage. There’s also a saline pool, Kneipp programme and sensual showers with chromotherapy and natural essences. What better way to reflect on your day at the one of the world’s most celebrated horse races?

INTERVIEW

INTERVIEW

BETTER THAN CHAMPAGNE?

Founder of the prestigious Ca’ del Bosco winery and president of the Consorzio per la Tutela del Franciacorta, his local wine growers association, Maurizio Zanella is one of the masters of Italian wine. But he has ruffled feathers in this conservative industry, most notably with his comment that he is “convinced that Franciacorta has the ability to overtake Champagne.” As he starts a new collaboration with Forte Village, the maverick of sparkling wine talks to Luciano Tancredi.

Luciano Tancredi: Maurizio Zanella, why do you believe that Franciacorta can overtake Champagne? Maurizio Zanella: If you’re talking about size and reputation then that’s not possible yet. But when it comes to quality – although there are different types of course – I’m convinced that the average quality of our Franciacorta is better. Luciano Tancredi: We’re fans of Champagne’s bubbles but you don’t want to focus on them, is that right? Maurizio Zanella: True. And there’s a reason for that. Our domestic production has increased in recent years not only because of quality, but also because we’ve abolished all the terms such as ‘sparkling wine’ and ‘classic method’ etc. The success of Franciacorta comes from the geography and the method.

48 fortevillage.com

Luciano Tancredi: It was the beginning of the seventies when Franciacorta began to develop. Tell me how the story began. Maurizio Zanella: Gladly. I was fifteen years old and back then there was a very violent student movement in Milan, which I was part of. Instead of studying, I got involved, including getting arrested and into fights and various other things. Then my father decided to put an end to this and he sent me into exile here, in Franciacorta, to Ca’ del Bosco, the farm he had recently bought complete with chickens and pigs. He enrolled me at school in Iseo, not far away. Luciano Tancredi: That’s when your passion emerged? Maurizio Zanella: Not right away. There was a study tour which was organised by the Region of Lombardy in France to learn about the wines from over the Alps. I must confess that the trip appealed to me more than the wine, especially the last two days of leisure in Paris. But then my father mellowed and a great winemaker, Veronelli, took me under his wing. Luciano Tancredi: You were very young. Maurizio Zanella: Yes, and this youthful enthusiasm helped me a lot. It helped me to break free of all the constraints that were holding back Italian wine. For this reason it was quite easy for me to become one of the people behind what I call the Italian wine Renaissance. Luciano Tancredi: To celebrate the passion and wisdom of the man who invented and brought it such success, Ca’ del Bosco has just produced the first wine label that bears the name of its creator, Maurizio Zanella. So you’ve got a company in your own image and now a wine too. What are the characteristics of this wine? Maurizio Zanella: In fact, this wine was born thirty years ago and the first vintage is 1980. At that time you still had the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC), and it was hard to offer the public an excellent wine without the DOC. It was one of my colleagues who had the idea – why not put the name of the winemaker on the label? Thus the first ‘signed’ Italian wine was born. Luciano Tancredi: Originally it was your mother, Annamaria Clementi Zanella, who chose Erbusco (an area between Brescia and Bergamo in Northern Italy) in the mid-sixties to plant a vineyard in what was one of the first regions to receive the DOC, recognising with great insight and wisdom the natural potential of the territory. If Ca’ del Bosco was born somewhere else, would it have been the same wine? Maurizio Zanella: No, because I have found the ideal conditions here. And also

“The Forte Village clientele is very exclusive and they appreciate excellence and luxury products, including wine. So here’s a challenge: to convince them that Franciacorta is better than Champagne” because there was no one else around me, I was the first. I found myself in the right place at the right time. Luciano Tancredi: Ca’ del Bosco wines and the Forte Village resort are both elite Italian products. How did the marriage of the two occur? Maurizio Zanella: These days we have a stand at the Salone del Mobile in Milan (the international furniture fair), a point of reference for design for the whole world. People might say: “What has design got to do with wine?” And I would say that we’re there because we believe that the excellent products that a country produces should be brought together. Forte Village is one of these, so the ‘marriage’ between the two of us was a must. We are also part of Altagamma, the foundation that brings together the best of Italian luxury companies. Luciano Tancredi: Forte Village clientele is very exclusive and they appreciate excellence and luxury products, including wine. So here’s a challenge: to convince them that Franciacorta is better than Champagne.

Maurizio Zanella: Challenge accepted. International Forte Village guests, who are very quality conscious and always focused on excellence, will be convinced that in Italy you can drink something better than that thing that the French make with grapes. I won’t say what it’s called because why should I advertise it for them?

S UN, SEA AND SOCIAL MEDIA

ave you checked out the Forte Village website lately? And the Facebook page? If the answer is “yes,” then you’re one of a growing number – and you’ll have noticed some changes. Visitors to the site have said it’s now easier to find out more about what’s happening at Forte Village and share news and information through Facebook and other social media platforms. It’s what Amedeo Guffanti, boss of Forte Village’s social media partner 77Agency, calls “syndication of content.” To put it another way, if you want to talk to others about what to do before you arrive at Forte Village, you’ll find the new site makes it easier than ever for guests to share news and ideas on Facebook or Twitter. Similarly, if you’re having an amazing dinner at one of the restaurants, have just enjoyed a bike ride through the stunning Sardinian scenery or your child has done brilliantly at one of the Sports Academies, you’ll find it easier than ever to tell your family and friends about it using WhatsApp, Pinterest or Instagram among others. “It’s about sharing with a special community, a very exclusive group of people,” says Mr Guffanti, 77Agency’s Partner and General Manager. “We’ve made the site more interactive and it’s now much easier to share anything from almost any page. There’s a ‘share’ button which immediately connects you with nearly 300 social networks including Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, StumbleUpon and LinkedIn.” “Around 50-60 per cent of us will now do online research before we buy,” says Mr Guffanti. Studies also reveal that affluent customers are more likely than any other group to search for peer comments. As well as making the Forte Village presence online more social media-friendly 77Agency has also been working to make it easier to access from a mobile device. In Italy, of 28 million internet users 16 million use mobile devices. It’s therefore hardly surprising that more people are visiting the Forte Village site from mobile phones and tablets compared to last year.

In the ever-changing world of social media 77Agency is one of the world’s fastest growing and most exciting names. Its Partner and General Manager, Amedeo Guffanti, talks to UniQ

77Agency, which celebrated its 10th anniversary last year, is growing rapidly with offices in Milan, Riga, Amsterdam, Madrid, New York and Sydney. “We’ve sent people to work in these cities and we’ve developed partnerships with companies that are already based there,” says Mr Guffanti. As such a young, fast growing industry, staff turnover is high in most digital and social companies, but this is not the case at 77Agency, where around 85 per cent of the staff have been with the company for five years or more. Mr Guffanti ascribes this to a management system where partners have the autonomy needed to service clients and develop the business. Of 77Agency’s growing list of global locations, it’s Riga in Latvia Mr Guffanti is most excited about: “It’s a great place to service the Russian market,” he says. “We now have 40 people in the office including many Russian speakers and graduates.” Guffanti himself visits Russia two or three times a year, focusing on Moscow, St Petersburg and Novosibirsk, to work with native partners and companies. “Many Russian businesses are still learning the benefits of digital marketing,” he explains. “This is because they are still producing raw materials or generating energy. With our decade of experience working with companies around the world, we’re in a great position to help them.”

Based in Italy, Enzo Miccio is one of the most sought-after wedding planners in the world. He creates magical ceremonies for couples, their families and their friends and now he’s available to organise your day at Forte Village.

H A P PILY EVER A FTER Castel Monastero has hosted wedding ceremonies and parties for hundreds of years and today its appeal is greater than ever

N

o one forgets their wedding day. It’s one of the most significant days of our lives, a celebration of love, a commitment between two people. So, finding a venue that is beautiful, unique and magical enough for this very special day really is essential. This is why couples who really want something above and beyond the run-of-the-mill party are choosing Castel Monastero to celebrate their vows. With its elegant piazzas, winding streets and terracotta roofs, this 11th-century hamlet, set amid the rugged beauty of the Tuscan Hills, is steeped in history. Over the centuries, thousands of couples have celebrated their weddings here. Today the whole village is devoted to the highest standards of hospitality. Whether you want a traditional wedding in the ancient church, or something different, you and your guests can relax in the comfort of Castel Monastero’s beautifully designed rooms and suites, spread around this noble residence. The importance of the event and the thousands of little details that weddings usually involve, mean that getting married can be a stressful business. But Castel Monastero’s experienced team of wedding planners take care of every aspect from food and wine to flowers and cars. They can even arrange babysitting, firework displays and visits to local areas of interest. The food draws on the best Tuscan traditions and is prepared by our skilled chefs from the freshest local ingredients. The spa occupies two ancient country houses and is ideally suited for all who want to relax and detox before and after the ceremony itself.

How important is the location or scenery when organising a wedding? Location is one of the most important elements in the staging of the wedding. When it comes to lighting and colour schemes nothing is left to chance. Each element is chosen to create the right atmosphere . What are the new and exciting trends in weddings these days? What are people asking for? These days more people talk about “a wedding weekend” when celebrations can start one or even two days before the event. By the ceremony itself there’s such a crescendo of emotions and feelings that the wedding is even more magical for the bride and groom. What is the main benefit of using a wedding planner? Having a wedding planner allows you to control every aspect of the celebrations from the dressing of the bride and groom to their entrance into the church and the arrival at the reception venue. There are also things like the seating plan and the appearance of the cake – always a spectacular event, which should impress the guests.

Castel Monastero’s own church, Saint Jacob and Saint Christopher, has an interior adorned with 17th- century decorations. For wedding parties of more than fifty, the service can be held in the beautiful Romanesque church of Badia Monastero, just one and a half kilometres from the resort, or the church of Saint Giusto and Saint Clemente in Castelnuovo Berardenga, an elegant neo-classical church that accommodates up to two hundred guests and is just a few minutes away. For civil ceremonies, there’s a magnificent function room in the town hall of Castelnuovo Berardenga in Chianti, just seven kilometres away. Another popular setting is the 18th-century Villa Chigi, with its stunning garden and views. Castel Monastero’s various locations are also popular with couples renewing their vows. After the ceremony guests and the couple can enjoy drinks at the Pool Gardens and then dinner in La Cantina, set in the monastery’s 17th-century wine cellar with its vaulted ceilings and ancient brickwork Whatever the size and style of your wedding, the beautiful and historic venue of Castel Monastero has everything to make it one to remember.

t’s a Saturday in mid-July and the Kempson family of London are getting ready to go on holiday. Clothes are neatly folded, ready to be packed, last minute preparations are being made and the excitement about the upcoming trip is palpable. But unlike most families, the Kempsons won’t be joining queues at the airport. Instead they’ve chosen to take Forte Village’s exclusive Private Jet Service. A car collects them and then, once at Heathrow, they’re wafted through check-in and shown to the lounge. Here they relax over a drink while the children start planning what they’ll do once at Forte Village. Before long it’s time to board and, again, there is no need to put up with the usual stresses of air travel – in just a few moments the family is boarding its own private jet, away from the crowds and noise of the airport.

“There is no need to put up with the usual stresses of air travel – in just a few moments the family is boarding its own private jet” fortevillage.com

The Boeing 737-300 was refurbished in 2009 and is exclusive to Forte Village. Instead of fighting for a particular seat, the Kempson children, Thomas, aged 10, and Isabel, 12, find themselves spoilt for choice – window, aisle, front or back – it’s entirely up to them. Why does it feel so spacious? Well, although the aircraft was built to accommodate 148 seats, it actually has around just a third of that. Unlike even Business Class on most airlines, each seat enjoys its own private world of tranquillity. With five cabin crew on board, excellent service is assured. While the children sip on fruit juices, their parents choose from fine Italian wines. After the children settle down with their iPads, their mother, Anna, reclines and gazes out of the window. Comfortable and with drink in hand, she flicks through glossy magazines from the range available on board. Meanwhile, husband Richard is tapping away on his laptop, finishing off a report in peace and quiet. Work done, Richard also reclines in his spacious seat and begins to read the first of a number of thrillers that he’s been saving for his well-earned two week break. After aperitifs, the family opt for an early lunch and choose from Italian starters and main courses. Having promised herself two weeks of healthy

eating, Anna finds it easy to choose wholesome and delicious dishes. Even the children go for something good for them. The plane soon begins its descent into Sardinia’s Cagliari airport, gliding over the glittering blue Mediterranean below. The arrival at Cagliari is just as fast as the departure from London. The family are whisked through Arrivals, their luggage following closely behind. Moments later, the Kempsons are in their limousine speeding along through the stunning Sardinian countryside. They’re already feeling relaxed, energised and ready for two weeks of swimming, sunbathing, great food, challenging sports and indulgent spa treatments.

SWEET DREAMS

ARE MADE OF THIS To ensure that all guests get a really great night’s sleep and are fully rested and ready for another day of fun and relaxation, Forte Village has been working with the world’s leading designer of luxury beds

O

ne thing that you hear visitors to Forte Village often talking about is how well they sleep. With exercise, fresh air, healthy food and a mind that has unwound from the stresses and strains of daily life, it’s hardly surprising that people feel so rested and refreshed during their time at the resort. But there’s one other ingredient in this recipe for a really good night’s sleep, and that’s a really good bed. This year Forte Village has partnered with Dorelan, one of the world’s leading luxury bed makers and supplier to some of the most celebrated hotel chains in the world. Working closely together, these two experts in their respective fields have created a bed that is not only supremely comfortable but can be customised so that it specifically meets the needs of the person sleeping in it. ‘Sweet Dreams’ consists of a range of luxury mattresses and mattress supports designed by Dorelan exclusively for Forte Village. Thanks to Dorelan’s innovative system of springs and supports, the special materials used and ergonomic styling, you’ll find that every part of your body is perfectly supported and beautifully cosseted.

In search of the best night’s sleep Founded in 1968 in the town of Forli, just east of Florence, by Pietro Paolo Bergamaschi and Diana Turo, Dorelan specialises in the production of mattresses, bed bases, pillows and accessories for the hotel and domestic markets. The company’s facilities cover 35,000 square metres and its new 32,000 square metre site is completely powered by solar panels and features state-of-the-art energy saving technology, in keeping with Dorelan’s policy of respecting the environment. For five years, from 2002 to 2006, Dorelan won awards in Europe’s 500, the European organisation and networking platform for growth companies and their entrepreneurs. The company has enjoyed revenue growth of at least 50 percent. With over 150 employees, it has research partnerships with institutions such as the University of Bologna. The company, which is constantly investing in Research and Development, also has its own independently assessed laboratories. Its products are available in around 60 outlets in Italy and through stores and suppliers in 25 countries around the world. Dorelan is responsible for every aspect of bed manufacture from frames through mattress to pillows and accessories. This, the company believes, provides alignment and correlation between all the elements of the bed, ensuring a really good night’s sleep.

The Myform Memory version moulds itself to your particular shape and helps ensure that whenever your partner moves or turns you won’t be disturbed. “We’ve spent many hours, not only talking to the Dorelan experts, but also testing and bouncing on their beds in order to create this really special, comfortable place for our guests to get the best night’s sleep ever,” says Matteo Piredda, Rooms Division Manager at Forte Village. “We’re very proud to say that the only place you’ll be able to experience the Dorelan Sweet Dreams bed is at Forte Village.” Dorelan has been creating some of the most luxurious, innovative and above all comfortable beds in the world for nearly half a century. The company works with

“We’re very proud to say that the only place that you’ll be able to experience the Dorelan Sweet Dreams bed is Forte Village” leading hotels and resorts to adopt a ‘360 degrees’ approach to the comfort of guests while they’re in bed. The high quality of the Dorelan system, which includes beds, mattresses, spring systems, pillows and accessories, means that a hotel room can be transformed into an oasis of wellness, a place for good health and relaxation, thanks to its innovative technologies, cutting-edge design and high degree of customisation. With this new partnership, Forte Village are able to offer guests an even more luxurious stay at the resort.

In 1985, thanks to the pioneering instincts of my father Dino, we launched the ambitious and challenging Casale del Giglio project; a challenge which, over the years, has taken us to heights of quality and professional satisfaction which could only have been dreamt of then. Convinced that our territory had great potential, we invested heavily in viticultural research and with the close and long term collaboration of our oenologist, Paolo Tiefenthaler, succeeded in totally revolutionizing the Agro Pontino valley’s approach to wine making.

ISLAND LIFE

PRIVATE JET

“SARDINIA – THE MAGIC FORMULA TO CURE EVERYTHING” Gavino Sanna has created successful advertising campaigns for brands around the world – but his heart will always be in Sardinia

H

e’s responsible for some of the most memorable advertising campaigns ever. He’s created and recreated the image of the Italian family and worked for Richard Nixon. Sardinia is the home of Gavino Sanna. Born in 1940 in the oldest district of Porto Torres, Sanna now lives in Alghero. Even from here, though, he is selling. “Now, I sell sunsets. I put some armchairs on the terrace, arrange some traditional Sardinian flatbread with some oil, some of our wonderful cheeses and a bottle of my wine,” he says. “Then my friends arrive, the sun starts to go down, the fire starts and the whole atmosphere enters through the eyes and into the heart.” Gavino Sanna has revealed the secret of a happy life – the silence, smells, flavours and colours of Sardinia. “Sardinia is breathtakingly beautiful,” he says. “You land in Cagliari, open the door of the plane and the hot air and smell of the sea and flowers overwhelms you. You can just sit in silence and feel happy. It detoxifies you of all the superfluous things we believe we need in life.” Making the trip from Cagliari to Sant’Anna Arresi, in the heart of the Sulcis, south west of the island, how does he feel? “Can I take a step back and start this journey in my youth? My parents sent me to the Art Institute of Sassari. I was bad at school but I was good with a pencil. One day I saw paintings by Filippo Figari, a late 19th century Sardinian artist. It was extraordinary, his colours were so strong and true. “Figari painted Sardinia in the way that Michelangelo would – with a blinding intensity, because Sardinia is such a force of nature, so powerful. So here’s my tip for travellers – look at the colours: the light and dark blue and purple sea; the infinite shades of colour of the salty water; pink, purple and red oleanders. The endless green from olive groves to the large leaves of agave and the generous foliage of the pine trees; the black trunks, stones, sand and sky.” Yet Sanna chose black and white for the front of his house. Why? “I wanted to reproduce something like the island’s Nuraghi: the pre-historic homes with their huge walls and tiny windows to spy on the enemy. I find the Sardinia that I love most of all is the austere, proud, black and white island: as white as the traditional women’s headgear and as black as the velvet jackets worn by the men. Men and women, day and night, hard as stone and sweet as honey. So, Sardinia, in short, offers him the wherewithal to be true to his roots and to be so happy? “Some time ago, during my career in advertising. I created this slogan for my land: ‘At the first sign of a cold, go to Sardinia.’ Sardinia is the antidote, the remedy, the elixir, the aspirin and the magic formula to cure everything.”

“Figari painted Sardinia in the way that Michelangelo would – with a blinding intensity, because Sardinia is such a force of nature, so powerful”
