FOR LEARNI THAT LIVES AT FHSU, WE INVEST IN OURSELVES BY INVESTING IN EACH OTHER. Our unique and vibrant learning communities unite first-year students through common interests, creating strong, transformative networks of support. For Nick Glassman ’18, the Everybody’s Business learning community brought his accounting degree to life. “I was given the opportunity to serve as an academic leader during a community trip to St. Maarten. I thought it would be one short trip, but I ended up returning for three straight years. I worked with and learned from local businesses, guided by FHSU’s dedicated faculty. To be honest, I assumed my accounting program would be dry and intellectual, but this was anything but. My experiences on St. Maarten were

unforgettable and breathtaking. My eyes were opened to a completely new way of life and how businesses function so differently in an international environment. During those three trips, I worked with a real estate company, a car repair service, an accounting firm and two different organic farmers—and I learned so much from each business. This last trip had the greatest impact on my growth as a student and as a person. The island was hit hard by Hurricane Irma, but during my visit, I witnessed such incredible resilience. The St. Maarten residents got right back up on their feet to build their businesses and lives better than before. I am so grateful FHSU gave me the opportunity to learn in this amazing place, and I cannot wait to return someday to work with them again.”

Everyone I have met at FHSU—including my professors—have made this university feel like home. I came to FHSU for the Applied Technology program, and I truly believe it is one of the strongest programs on campus. My professors have really taken the time to get to know me. This last semester, I came to class early every day to have coffee with a few of my professors and even the head of the department. Honestly, I never thought it was possible to have such a close connection with such brilliant professors. Coming to college can be a really overwhelming idea, but at FHSU, the faculty are completely committed to helping you grow and develop into the best person you can be.”

FOR YOUR goals “I chose Fort Hays State because faculty and staff are truly invested in student success, and the opportunities to get involved on campus and in research as an undergraduate are unlike any other.”

MacKinzie Foster

Senior in Mathematics Topeka, KS

MacKinzie Foster has always been drawn to mathematics and inspired by the search for answers that data can provide. She’s found a home away from home in the Forsyth Library’s Maker Space, sharing her passion for data analysis with students from every degree path. No matter where she goes next, MacKinzie is prepared to discover the answers in bigdata, and she knows her FHSU Tiger family will support her.

“Fort Hays State always has something fresh and new. Innovative buildings, programs that reach out to students from every background—from HALO to firstgen programs. FHSU is always looking for what’s next to improve student life and never content to stand still.”

Eiran Saucedo

Senior in General Studies with an emphasis in Civic Entrepreneurship Wichita, KS

As a Tiger Team Leader, Eiran gets to share his love for FHSU and welcome new students to campus. He inspires others to seize the many opportunities he has enjoyed, such as internships, networking, studying abroad, and getting involved in the 300+ different student organizations on campus.

“When I first visited FHSU, it felt like home. I have that kind of support from not only my friends but faculty and staff. My education teachers are very open, and they are here for you. I know I can talk to them anytime about anything and if I ever need help, their door will be open.”

Sydney Simmons

Sophomore in Elementary Education Grand Island, NE

Sydney Simmons has dreamed of being a teacher since she was a child. She started on the path to fulfilling that dream by attending FHSU, and she’s found her home away from home in Hays. Sydney joined a learning community her freshman year and became involved in the First 40 Days at the Fort. Today you can find her active in intramurals, enjoying the Hays life at $4 movies, and continuing to work toward that dream of having a classroom of her own. 15

“The Honors College has allowed me to go beyond what’s taught in classes to try new things, test myself, and learn even more. It’s also a great way to connect with other students and get involved in all Fort Hays State has to offer.”

Conrad Vajnar

Junior in Accounting with a minor in Criminal Justice Hays, KS

Conrad Vajnar grew up in Hays, and he chose FHSU for the affordability, outstanding academic programs, strong alumni network, and one-of-a-kind community. He’s the first to tell you that the best way to success is to get involved—live in the sweet residence halls, join a learning community, play intramurals, find your place in a club like the Criminal Justice Club, and meet the great people of FHSU. Those experiences and connections you make will pave the way for success in college and beyond.

“The new Art & Design Building is stunning! It was built for collaboration, and it is full of life all through the day and night. I can already see our space lit up at night, with coffee, music on, and our studio family collaborating to make art.”

Haley Gottschalk

Senior in Studio Art with an emphasis in Ceramics Broomfield, CO

Haley Gottschalk knew FHSU had a stellar art program, a supportive community, and affordable tuition. She was blown away though by the vibrant community arts scene, opportunities for networking and travel, and the new state-of-the-art home to the art department. The once self-proclaimed introvert has found the confidence to reach outside her comfort zone to share her artwork, to make friends that become family, and to find her niche in the Hays arts community.

“I was on the fence about FHSU, but I wish I would have come here first. Fort Hays State is big enough to offer all the opportunities a college should and cozy enough that the people truly care about knowing you and helping you succeed.”

Hanna Bracelin

Sophomore in Psychology St. Francis, KS

In the future, Hanna Bracelin will make a difference in the lives of others as a family and addiction counselor. Today, she’s serving her peers in the Center for Student Health and having her best-life college experience. She transferred to FHSU and found the home away from home she was looking for in a college along with opportunities for intramurals, diverse student organizations, exciting student activities, and a community that invests in each other. 16

FOR A LEGACY THAT LASTS BY GETTING INVOLVED AT FHSU, YOU AREN’T JUST INVESTING IN YOURSELF. You are creating a legacy that will last for years to come. Whatever you are passionate about, this is your opportunity to use your skills to make a difference for others on our campus and in our community.

When starting college, I was timid and struggled to communicate my thoughts with others, but through getting involved with student organizations (especially FHSU Barn Hoppers), I have learned how to communicate with a large group of people. I have also gained various leadership skills through becoming the president of Barn Hoppers and through getting involved with Tiger Team and HCI. Not only have I learned leadership and communication skills, but I have also had the opportunity to network and meet so many incredible people who I now consider some of my closest friends.”

At FHSU, they take the time to connect with you one-on-one. Faculty put their students first. You can give them a call at 9 p.m. when you need a shoulder to lean on, and they listen because they are the people you can talk to about anything. Those are your family away from home, and they push you to be the best student you can be. Hugo in Admissions welcomes everyone with a smile, and you know that you’re home. You’re in the right place.”
