CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE: FACTS PAEDIATRIC CARDIOLOGY

CONGENITAL HEART DISEASES Congenital heart diseases (CHDs) are commonest form of birth defects. These are heart defects a baby is born with. These conditions affect the structure and function of the heart.

HEART DEFECT AFFECT THE BABY Heart valves: These open and close so as to allow unidirectional blood flow to and from the heart while Septum. This is the partition which divides the right and left sides of the heart.

CHDS AND THEIR TREATMENT Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) The ductus is a connection between the lung artery and the artery to the whole body. It is open in the womb but is supposed to close once the baby is born. If it remains open it will need to be closed by an umbrella device or surgery.

CAUSES OF CHDS Heart is fully formed during the first few weeks of pregnancy. The heart defects happen as the heart is forming. Often the defect has already happened before the lady knows she is pregnant.

SYMPTOMS OF CHDS Severe defects are usually diagnosed during early neonatal period or in some cases during pregnancy itself. Less severe ones may not present till later in life.
