Why not your car loan? If you think buying a locally raised rump roast makes a difference, imagine how a bigger purchase, like a local car loan, supports the community. Right now, Harborstone Credit Union has barn loads of money to lend to people who not only want to drive a new car but drive the local economy too. Who could possibly have a beef with that?

hildren and youth will have opportunities to relax, learn, let loose and explore new ideas and skills with the SKIESUnlimited Youth Academy. The program promotes exciting and unlimited learning possibilities for Army and Air Force children and youth at JBLM. Studies have concluded that young people spend as much as 80 percent of their waking time outside the classroom. When involved in instructional programs during the critical hours of 3–8 p.m., school-age children are less likely to engage in undesirable behavior. Many SKIESUnlimited instructional classes are offered during this time and allow children and youth to discover new skills, pursue and nurture personal interests, interact socially with others, bolster college applications and foster close relationships with knowledgeable staffers. Additional classes are scheduled on the SKIESUnlimited

calendar each month, adding to the variety offered and based on the feedback from current and prospective students.

Discover new skills, pursue and nurture personal interests.

Since SKIESUnlimited opened its doors in January 2006, the program has strived to offer only top-rate and innovative classes for babies, children and teens. The quarterly schedules are sure to include a class listing for nearly every interest. Class schedules vary from quarter to quarter and many offerings are seasonal. Classes are offered quarterly based on popular demand and positive feedback. New classes are considered and often scheduled based on customer request—so if you have a suggestion, be sure to let the staffers know. Register with WebTrac—visit JBLMmwr.com for details.

Fun for your four-legged friends Where do your dogs play at JBLM? We asked our Facebook fans where they take their dogs to play at both Lewis and McChord. Here are their suggestions:

Bedrooms Living Rooms Dining Rooms Electronics

“The Ft. Lewis dog park! My dogs love that there are trees and bushes and they can investigate all the different landmarks!” —Christina C. “Solo Point on the back side of North Fort is always nice!” —Tracie R.K. “The one on post is nice. Solo Point is nice, too, as long as all the dogs are getting along. We went there this past weekend, and our dogs loved it... .” — Angi C. McChord Field features a grassy off-leash dog park with benches located at Perimeter Road and Lincoln Blvd. directly north of the intersection. Dog owners also enjoy walking their leashed dogs to or from Holiday Park along the wide, paved jogging path. The Lewis dog park is located at Lewis Main just inside the DuPont Gate, south of the Auto Crafts Center. Travel south on West Way, turn left onto West Washington Street, then immediately left onto Everett Street. After crossing Hanna Drive, veer left back onto West Way. The dog park is on the left side of the road. Note: Regulations at JBLM state that owners must control their pets in such a manner as to prevent them from becoming a nuisance to other members of the installation. Control is defined as control by leash or positive voice control.

Mapping your financial success By Ryki Carlson, JBLM Financial Counselor

T

he current economic situation     is a great example of why we should plan for the future. Controlling your finances can help you reduce stress and provide future financial security. The importance of understanding your current situation and identifying your goals empowers you to reach financial success. Visualize your financial future as a map. Evaluating your starting point helps set your course. This step includes identifying all your debts, interest rates, balances and accounts. Setting goals will provide clarity and focus to your plans. Write out your short- and long-term goals. If you need assistance setting effective goals, consider using the goal-setting-guide.com to help. Take time to identify challenges you may encounter along the way. No road

trip is ever complete without detours. Knowing that you’ll encounter financial detours along the way should encourage flexibility in your planning; this prepares you for carefully negotiating the financial barriers that inevitably arise in every stage of life. Budgeting finances is a vital strategy for success. It’s important to know where your money is going each month. Ensure you incorporate emergency savings into your budget to help you handle the unexpected. Consider using technology to assist you. Technology tools are available through a number of resources including your own financial institution’s websites. With technology on your side, these tasks take only minutes to accomplish each month. Mapping out your starting point,

your goals and predictable challenges will help keep you focused. Approaching your finances one step at a time provides emotional stability, while wisely managing your finances to achieve your goals and dreams empowers you to make sound financial decisions. Army Community Service offers a variety of financial education classes to help achieve financial success. This month’s classes at Waller Hall at Lewis Main, Building 400, include: • Investing for Retirement Learn about accounts and investments that may help secure a comfortable retirement. ASK THE MONEY EXPERTS

Q: What’s the difference between debt settlement and debt consolidation?

A:

Debt settlement is the process of negotiating with your creditors to see if they‘ll accept a reduced payment (either a one-time payment or a series of payments) to satisfy the accounts. If you use a debt settlement company, you make monthly payments to the settlement company. The settlement company takes their fees out first and the remaining balance is put into a trust account. The creditors get nothing until they decide to settle. Since there’s a delay on payments, creditors can report negative information to the credit reporting agencies. There are fees, tax implications and negative credit reporting factors involved in the debt settlement process. Debt consolidation means that you get a “consolidation loan” to pay off multiple debts and consolidate them into one loan and payment. This is usually done through your financial institution (bank or credit union) or a credit counseling agency. The benefits include lower monthly payments, lower fees and interest rates and repaying debt in less time. For more information on all things financial, sign up for a money-wise class today. You could win $600 for your unit fund! Here’s how to take the challenge: Reduce waste, recycle your cans and earn cash with the Aluminum Can Challenge! JBLM units that collect the most aluminum cans Aug. 1 through Oct. 31 could win up to $600 cash for their unit funds! And, for the first time ever, JBLM directorates can compete for nonmonetary prizes! Participation is open to JBLM military units with an established FMWR fund account, as well as JBLM directorates. Family members may contribute to their service member’s unit account; and contributions may also be made to the BOSS Team, which will hold a unit raffle for the cans. Drop off your empty cans to the Recycle Center at Lewis Main, which is open Tuesday through Saturday, 7:30 a.m.–4 p.m. Cans will be weighed onsite and weights recorded for the unit account. Participating units or directorates should provide a challenge POC by calling 253-966-1734.

Make every day America Recycles Day! Recycling aluminum cans generates money that goes back to the JBLM community. Money goes into a military unit fund account or into the general account in support of Family and MWR and quality of life services.
