Options for families include child care, Youth Sports, Hillside Youth Center (for grades 6–12) and School Support Services. Single Service Members can link up with BOSS and celebrate Single Service Member Day (page 28). Getting settled

Connect with the Youth Sponsorship Program

Getting ready to PCS or just arriving? Get connected with Youth Sponsorship so you can get to know your new installation before you move or if you’ve just arrived here! The CYS Youth Sponsorship Program is peer outreach designed to help incoming youth make a smooth transition from their previous installation to the new installation and community. A sponsor is an experienced, energetic youth who provides regular outreach with new students through welcome packets, face-to-face communication and email.

Peer sponsors communicate information about school resources, provide

encouragement and support, develop trust, provide appropriate referrals and are a point of contact within the Youth Sponsorship Program, including Hillside Youth Center, community activities and events and so much more! If you have a youth who excels at creativity, problemsolving and patience with a desire to help and serve others, let them know about Youth Sponsorship and invite them to join our team and become a sponsor and a leader in your community! To request a youth sponsor or apply to become a sponsor, contact School Support Services at 253-967-7195 or visit 2295 S. 12th St., Lewis Main. You also may call Hillside Youth Center at 253-967-4441.

New to JBLM? Join CYS!

Registration is easy

It’s easy to register your family in Child & Youth Services to access before- and after-school programs, child care, youth sports, Hillside Youth Center and more.

Once you arrive at JBLM, you should register your children as soon as possible with CYS to take advantage of all the programs offered during the school year and beyond. Find a registration checklist at JBLM.armymwr.com under Parent Central Services. Call 253-966-2977 for an appointment.

If you need child care, you can place your family members on the wait list at MilitaryChildCare.com even before you register at JBLM’s Parent Central Services. You’ll manage the wait list by checking in once a month to reconfirm your request. You’ll receive reminder and placement offer emails to help you see where you are from month to month.

If you only want to register for youth center programs or youth sports, you won’t need to register at MilitaryChildCare.com

Parent Central Services is located at 2295 S. 12th St. at Bitar Avenue, Lewis Main. Walk-ins are welcome.

Enrolling in child care at JBLM... As easy as 1–2–3

Register with MilitaryChildCare.com.

Register from anywhere in the world at MilitaryChildCare.com to request care at a CYS center at JBLM and get placed on the wait list.

• Once registered, the site provides an anticipated placement time based on family priority, spaces available for specific age groups and requested location. This is only an estimate — placement times can fluctuate both down and up.

• Parents are responsible to manage the wait list and are required to reconfirm request every 30 days.

• MilitaryChildCare.com generates all notifications — placement offers and reminders — via email.

• Once offer is extended by the site via email, parent must contact Parent Central Services by phone or in person within two business days to make an appointment to complete enrollment requirements.

• It’s important to remember that MilitaryChildCare. com is a waiting list management data system that allows you to manage your own wait list. It does not enroll you at JBLM CYS. You’ll need to go to Parent Central to register (step 2).

Register your children at Parent Central Services.

As soon as possible, families should register their children at Parent Central Services. Patrons will need the following documents in order to complete the registration process to use care:

• DoD ID card.

• Contact information for home and work.

• Two local emergency contacts.

• Official shot record from your physician or medical facility.

• Full month of most recent LES or pay stubs or proof of full-time student. Go to JBLMcysRegistration.com and click on

the “Start New Registration” button to expedite registration.

• All paperwork must be completed prior to the child’s enrollment.

• Registration appointments are recommended by not required.

• Public computers are available at Parent Central Services and staff is available to assist with MilitaryChildCare.com registration and WebTrac preregistration.

• If you’re enrolled at Parent Central prior to being offered a child care space, you can start care right away once you’re offered a space from MilitaryChildCare.com.*

Only want to register for programs or sports? Start here.

Do not register at MilitaryChildCare. com if you only want youth programs or sports.

Families should register after arriving at JBLM with the following documents:

• DoD ID card.

• Contact information for home and work.

• Two local emergency contacts.

• Official shot record from your physician or medical facility.

Once registered with JBLM Child & Youth Services, families may sign up for sports online using WebTrac at JBLMcysRegistration.com.

*Prior to starting care, you must attend CYS orientation at your child/school age care program. This will be explained more during your Parent Central appointment.

Parent Central Services is located at 2295 S. 12th St. (at Bitar Avenue), Lewis Main. For more information, call 253-966-2977.

Stay cool & savvy

Escape the heat

Climate-wise, JBLM and surrounding areas are mild compared to other duty stations you may have experienced, but this comes with another unique feature you may or may not have counted on. Simply put, the majority of homes and buildings do not have air-conditioning. What to do when the temperature does climb? On those rare summer days when it reaches high 90s or even a hundred degrees, head to a cooling station and chill out!

You can splash around at Freedom Park on Lewis Main or in the pools (page 30) or American Lake (page 38), but there are also several MWR locations with that icy A/C you crave.

Bowl Arena Lanes, which is participating in Kids Bowl Free (page 34) has more than just that arctic air. A party rental room, the Strike Zone Café and arcade games make it a great spot to spend time striking up some fun while sporting some fashionable bowling shoes.

Brisk, breezy and books more your thing? McChord Library is your spot. Search for your next read or log some minutes for the Summer Reading Program (page 35), search for a DVD for movie night, snag a video game to play, surf the web with free Wi-Fi at the computer stations or let your creative juices flow at the Makerspace complete with a Cricut workstation, an embroidery machine, 3D printer, button maker and more. You can even get free museum passes and head out to local museums for more indoor shelter from the sun.

Ready for chilly air to hit the spot along with breakfast or lunch? Stop by Habañero Mexican Grill from 7 a.m.–2 p.m. daily, for a tasty treat. And for ages 18 and older, chill at Warrior Zone. Gaming stations, 55-inch TVs, pool tables, a movie room, and of course, Warrior Zone Café are all part of this cooling off choice.

Tap into freebies

Feeling a little financially tapped out? Fret not. Take advantage of all the freebies available to you at JBLM! The Financial Readiness Program through AFCS can help with personal finances, and if it’s a recent PCS that has you frazzled, take advantage of the lending closet. Master your money management by scheduling a meeting with an AFCS accredited financial counselor at 253-967-1453 or head to JBLMfrp.Timetap.com to register online. Trainings are also available for units and SFRGs. Please call to submit your training request. If you’re within 30 days of a PCS, another free and helpful service is the lending closet, which allows you to borrow household items while your personal items are packed up and in transit. Items available are coffee makers, dishes,

toasters, sleeping mats and more. For more information, contact the Lewis Main Lending Closet at 253-967-3633 or the McChord Field Lending Closet at 253-982-2695.

Once you’ve tackled the basics of budgeting, stretch your dollar even further with a plethora of freebies from MWR! Case in point: This magazine you are currently reading; published quarterly, you can pick up a free print copy at any MWR location or read for free online. And at those MWR locations? Well, there’s free stuff there, too!

The libraries are, of course, full of free books to borrow, but you can also check out movies, museum passes, PNW field guides with backpacks to go exploring and much more. Both Grandstaff and McChord libraries also have gaming stations in addition to their computer stations, Wi-Fi hot spots,

ROKUs, study rooms and a conference room at each location that is available to reserve. Plus, there are free book clubs, storytimes for children and a full schedule of events each month. Online resources are also an option! You can learn a new language or stream movies, too. Access to our seven fitness centers is free and, if you are looking for after-hours workout options, you can also sign up for 24/7 access at three locations. For DoD ID cardholders ages 18 and older, Warrior Zone has movies, trivia nights, tournaments and large-screen TVs for televised events. Take-home Art-on-the-Go Kits are available from the Arts & Crafts Center. Many of our special events are free, plus we have playgrounds, splash parks and a skate park, too. Take advantage of all the ways to stretch your dollar!

Celebrate with MWR Catering

The guest list. The venue. The ambiance. The food — oh, the food! Envisioning the perfect event can be almost as fun as the occasion itself. When it comes time to turn that vision into a reality, MWR Catering is here to ensure your event is a success.

From start to finish, MWR Catering professionals will guide you through selecting the best options for your event needs. Be it a wedding, military briefing, holiday gathering or milestone celebration such as a graduation, anniversary or birthday party, we’ll be there as your powerhouse planning team, menu curators and event coordinators.

Recognizing Hillside youth’s achievement

Big congratulations are owed to Jordan from Hillside Youth Center, this year’s state-level Military Youth of the Year! When chatting with him, Jordan shared he learned about this opportunity and was encouraged to participate by Mrs. Charissa L., Hillside Assistant Manager. Consequently, this began his Military Youth of the Year journey, which led him to compose essays, present his first public speech and enjoy a special celebration at Governor Inslee’s mansion after finding out he won the state-level scholarship. He stated he was proud to step up and

represent Hillside for this program and pulled from his experiences he has already had completing community service. He’s volunteered his time and talents at special events including Kids’ Fest, the Hillside Youth Center’s Harvest Fest and at the Children’s Museum of JBLM. He was only a little nervous about the state competition because he was selected to be the first candidate for the activities. Considering the overall competition experience, Jordan said it was, “uplifting. Everyone wanted to see each other succeed and grow. Even if people messed up [their speech], you cheered for them.” He also left some words of wisdom for other students thinking about participating next year. He wants “to push them to do something like this … and you know, be excited.” His line of thinking is, “If I can do this, so can you. This can really open doors and bring new opportunities.”

When speaking about his time at Hillside Youth Center,

he shared it’s a place that feels like home, and he’s had a chance to make really close friends. It’s “a very good environment and there’s never a dull moment at the center.” He appreciates the video game room, the gym where he can play basketball, the nice staff and how everyone is really nice.

On a more personal side, besides loving to play basketball, Jordan takes pride in being an JROTC Cadet. At the time of his interview, he said his family has been here in Washington for almost three years and is getting ready to move on to their next location, but he plans to attend Winston-Salem State University — his mother’s alma mater — to study kinesiology, a program he feels will connect well with his aspirations to choose from a medical field related Army MOS when he follows in his father’s footsteps to serve.

Best wishes on all your future endeavors, Jordan, and thank you for representing JBLM!

Staycations at JBLM

Youdon’t have to go far for a getaway. Have yourself a little adventure close to home. During a staycation, you can avoid some of the crowds and hassle associated with traditional travel, save some time or money and morph into a tourist right where you are. And lucky for you, you’re here! JBLM and the PNW have a lot to offer.

Where to stay

With us, of course! Outdoor Recreation offers several choices for lodging right here on the installation. Plus, through Outdoor Rec rentals, you can reserve campers if you’ve got another nearby destination in mind.

Cabins

Choose to stay in one of 13 lakefront cabins. While each cabin offers an inviting, picturesque home away from home during your stay near American Lake, pick the one that best fits your needs. Layouts include studio cabins with room for two adults or cabins with one, two or three bedrooms and space for four, six or eight adults, respectively. Of those, there are two ADA-compliant choices: a studio or one bedroom, which are both wheelchair accessible.

Amenities include kitchenettes equipped with appliances, pots, pans and dishes, bedding, private bathrooms with towel service, TVs, DVD players and wireless internet. There is also a shared, common area laundry room in proximity to the cabins. The three bedroom has one more perk to make your stay extra cozy — a gas fireplace.

RV sites

There are two areas with RV spaces here at JBLM: Lewis North Travel Camp and the Holiday Park FamCamp on McChord Field. The Lewis North Travel Camp is located near American Lake and offers common areas with TVs, Wi-Fi, restroom areas with showers and coin-operated laundry machines. Holiday Park offers covered picnic areas with grills, hiking trails and a jogging track. Site options between the two locations are 30-Amp, 50-Amp or waterfront 50-Amp.

In addition, there are two permanently staged campers available for staycation reservations! Enjoy many of the same amenities without needing to tow and set up an RV yourself. These campers have kitchenettes, couches, bunk beds and TVs.

Tent camping

Tent camping is also available at both the Lewis North Travel Camp and Holiday Park FamCamp. There is a two-tent maximum per campsite. In addition, there is a scouting campsite area at Holiday Park.

Celebrate Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest in Munich is well-known as the world’s largest festival, but you don’t have to travel all the way to Germany to enjoy this tradition. It’s time to don your lederhosen or dirndl because JBLM’s Oktoberfest is planned for Saturday, Sept. 28!

JBLM’s twist on the fan-favorite fall festival includes a mouthwatering menu and a selection of beers. Last year’s menu included items such as schnitzels, brats, pretzels, strudel and gingerbread cookies. In addition, this family-friendly event boasts live entertainment, games, a fall flea market and more. Oktoberfest is open to DoD ID cardholders and their guests, and patrons must be ages 21 and older with IDs to drink. For more information, stay tuned to our website and social media.

Surf the swim-benefits wave

A deep dive isn’t necessary to discover the advantages of choosing to go for a swim. For the sake of fitness, recreation or both, there are many positives tied to a love of aquatic activities. As exercise, swimming is a low-impact way to work every muscle in your body and splashing around, feeling weightless as you float or even dipping your toes in are all excellent ways to have fun and relax. All of that is on top of the simple fact that cool, clear waters are a welcome reprieve from the heat. Ready for these swell benefits? Enjoy water-filled days at McChord Outdoor Pool or Soldiers Field House Pool! McChord Outdoor Pool, which is located between the McChord Fitness Center and McChord Fitness Annex, is open through Labor Day in September. The pool at Soldiers Field House operates yearround and offers lap swim, unit training, physical therapy and recreational swim times. Pool parties, reservations and swim lessons are also options at Soldiers Field House (currently not available at McChord Pool). Glide over to the Aquatics section of our website for more details and to view pool schedules, rules and fees.

Connecting through steps

People, lets walk! Translated as “people’s walk,” a Volksmarch is all about community building. On Saturday, Sept. 14 at 9 a.m., everyone is invited to participate in the free Awareness Volksmarch 5K at Heritage Hill, McChord Field.

In addition to physical fitness, the walk serves several purposes. Key components include accessing resources, fostering human connection and breaking down barriers. From start to finish and along the 5K route, several on-base and local programs including Family Advocacy, SHARP and the Army Substance Abuse Program will have resource booths providing information about support systems, mental health services,

opportunities for personal growth and activities. Since a Volksmarch is traditionally noncompetitive, participants have a chance to focus on sharing the experience with each other. Take time to swap stories, meet new friends and soak up the camaraderie. In doing so, you’ll meet many diverse folks who make up JBLM’s supportive community.

People of all ages, abilities and fitness levels are welcome for this family-friendly event in order to celebrate health, togetherness and inclusivity. Units and squadrons interested in participating as a group can earn Fields of Friendly Strife points, too, which is all the more reason to get steppin’.

Visit JBLMraces.com for more information about the Awareness Volksmarch 5K.

Committed to grime

Fun-loving fitness super sleuths are hot on the trail of SFA masterminds who are harboring motives to pull some down and dirty tricks this July. A race day task force is forming and all members of the general public are invited to participate. Be sure to review the contents of The JBLM Down & Dirty Trail Run case file carefully before accepting this role. Demands of the job are filthy, physically grueling and there will certainly be obstacles to overcome.

Case number 07-20-2024: Plans were uncovered for an obstacle course race on Saturday, July 20 starting at 10 a.m. Sources report this activity will cover a three-mile course with various challenges to go through, over or under. Evidence from previous SFA hijinks suggest hills and bunkers to climb, tires to flip and weave through, barbed wire crawls and a gigantic and super slippery slide. Finisher medals and bib rewards are offered for association with this race.

T-shirts are an added bonus for investigators keen on following preregistration procedures. Best practices detect participants should start in waves of 25 offering enough time and space for all to complete each obstacle section. Over the course of these grimy endeavors, we suspect a steady pace, mental strength and motivation will ensure success. Directions for solving this case are as follows.

Visit JBLMraces.com for more information and to register. Provide documentation of your $50 (reduced to $42 for E1-E4) registration fee as an alibi for your weekend whereabouts. Note that online registration will close on Wednesday, July 17 and for those registering before Friday, July 5, T-shirts are guaranteed. Packet pickups will be from 11 a.m.–6 p.m. on Friday, July 19 at Soldiers Field House or the morning of the race from 8:30–9:30 a.m. Prepare to celebrate your triumph with an included lunch, beverage and music after you conquer the course.

Register for Kids Bowl Free

Text and photo by

Time to spare? Get your summer rolling with free kids bowling! The Kids Bowl Free program is one of the amazing experiences our JBLM kiddos can participate in during the summer through Aug. 31.

The registration process to sign my son up for the program was quick, easy and to the point. The Kids Bowl Free program website is user-friendly, and even lists the available times set for kids to bowl for free so you can plan your visit.

To sign up my kid, I accessed KidsBowlFree.com, which is the Kids Bowl Free program main website. Once there, I clicked the “Step 1: Find a participating bowling center in your community,” link and found JBLM-Lewis Bowl Arena Lanes under the military bowling centers list.

A web page with an online form pulled up that first requested my parent contact information used to create an online account with the Kids Bowl Free program. Next, the web page requested the names and birthdays of all children registering between the ages of 2-16 years old. Once I selected the “sign up now” button, I immediately received an email thanking me for registering for the program, which provided more details on what the bowling program offers.

If you’re looking for a free summer activity with your kids, I encourage you to sign them up for the Kids Bowl Free bowling program.

Lean into literacy

One of the best ways to avoid summer slide is to get lost in a book — or several! Promoting summer learning and a lifelong love of reading, the DoD-MWR Summer Reading Program has been inspirational for kids, teens and adults alike since 2010. Last year, across all service branches, over 78 million reading minutes were logged! Have you started tracking your minutes with the libraries yet for this year?

JBLM libraries kicked off registration in June, but it’s not too late to participate. See how many minutes you can log and incentive prizes you can collect! This year’s theme is “Read, Renew, Repeat” and encourages self-improvement and self-preservation through reading.

Throughout the summer, there will be weekly events and programs. For example, planned programs for teens include collaboration between the libraries and other MWR programs including bowling (at Bowl Arena Lanes), a glow night event (Arts & Crafts) and a Nerf course (Outdoor Rec). Other scheduled events will take place every Tuesday at McChord Library and every Thursday at Grandstaff Library with the return of the popular Reptile Isle on July 16 and 18. The grand finale event is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 16. If you have any questions about the Summer Reading Program, please contact the lib raries directly.

Read to a buddy: Puff’s Cozy Corner

Did you know that guinea pigs have better hearing than humans do? It’s true, and this makes them good listeners. So good, in fact, McChord Library is happy to introduce you to Puff! As an expert listener, Puff loves to hear stories. Will you read to him? His favorite reading buddies are young readers, but he is so friendly that he’s open to visiting with all library patrons. Puff will be at McChord Library for Puff’s Cozy Corner every first Friday of the month from 10:30 a.m.–noon. To reserve your reading time with Puff, call 253-982-3454.

Puff has strategically chosen to start his once-monthly visits to the library in September, which is also Library Card Sign-up Month according to the American Library Association. Your DoD ID card is also your library card! If you haven’t set up your access yet, ask a library staff member for help.

Make your crafting list, check it twice

Ho, ho and hooray for crafts this July! There are plenty of reasons to be jolly when you stop by the Arts & Crafts Center. First up, for everyone on the good side of St. Nick’s list, enjoy a Christmas in July sale. All Christmas décor items (except for ornaments) will be discounted 40% from July 1–31 while supplies last.

Then make some merry décor of your own at the Patriot’s Holiday workshop on Wednesday, July 10 from 5–8 p.m. Create a rag wreath, holiday-themed mosaic and handmade clay ornaments. Adding to the fun of Christmas in July, these crafts will also be patriotic with either red, white and blue colors or in the case of the rag wreath, you can even bring your own old uniforms to repurpose. The class is open to ages 13 and older and costs $40 per person.

Throughout the month, the Arts & Crafts gifts just keep on giving with two more crafting opportunities. There will be a Kids’ Art Camp held 2–5 p.m. Monday, July 15–Friday, July 19. Children ages 13 and younger may participate for $10 per day. Each day will include options for three to four different crafts aligning with a “Warriors and Wizards” theme. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to attend.

Finally, on Wednesday, July 24, from 5–7 p.m., paint yourself a pretty-as-Christmas morning picture at the Acrylic Paint Workshop! Discover the basics and work on creating a beautiful landscape painting. This class is open to ages 13 and older and cost $25 per person.

To attend classes or the Kids’ Art Camp, please reserve your spot at least 24 hours in advance by calling 253-982-6719 or stopping by the Arts & Crafts Center, 1121 Barnes Blvd., McChord Field.

Cuing summer celebrations

Of all iconic signals of summer’s arrival, one is likely seared in your psyche as the epitome of summertime: a classic cookout! Prompted by rising temps, sunshine and more time outside, grilling season is upon us. “Meat” us at the Sizzlin’ Summer BBQ on Saturday, July 13 from 11 a.m.–5 p.m.

Not only held during National Grilling Month, this inaugural event is also the Grand Opening of the Community Park on Lewis Main. Attendees can expect live entertainment from America’s First Corps Army Band, a craft fair, free samples from Jacks BBQ (while supplies last), a few food vendors and Beerwerks as a drink vendor. Admission is free and open to MWR-eligible patrons and their sponsored guests. Blankets and camping chairs are welcome for picnic-style seating, and a pop-up MWR tent will be available for covered, shady seating.

In addition, 12 teams will participate in a heated competition across four BBQ categories: ribs, chicken, small pork shoulder and PNW “surprise me,” which could be any local specialty such as salmon or clams. While competition items will only be tasted by a panel of judges, noncompetitors are welcome to stick around for the award announcements. For more details, check out the online MWR calendar. Contact JBLMSpecialEvents@army.mil with any questions.

Angling for a “reel” good time

Learn to fly-fish with Outdoor Recreation! An Introduction to Fly-Fishing Clinic will be offered twice in July at the Northwest Adventure Center. Familiarize yourself with all the fundamentals of fly-fishing — rods and reels, fly selection, essential knots and basic casting. Choose to attend on Wednesdays, July 10 or 24 from 5–9 p.m. Private classes are also available.

After taking the class, choose to book a private day or overnight fly-fishing trip on the Yakima, Natches or Cle Elum rivers. All three rivers attract anglers from around the world, and during your trip with Outdoor Rec, you can expect to fish from both the shore and from moving drift boats or rafts. Trips are available for up to four participants at a time and include fly rods and reels (but you may bring your own), flies, tippet and small tackle items, one dinner and one breakfast, non-alcoholic beverages, shuttle transportation during the trip and, of course, Outdoor Rec expert guidance. Depending on the time of year, you should plan to bring waders and boots, overnight camping gear (a recommended packing list is available), a lunch and personal items such as clothing, medicine, water and any additional food and snacks.

Registration for the clinics can be completed online through WebTrac or in person. If interested in booking an overnight trip, please

call 253-967-7744 or stop by the Northwest Adventure Center, 8050 NCO Beach Rd., Lewis North.

Lured to lake life

Soak up easy living, sunshine and summer vibes on the shores of American Lake. The lake life is calling and you’ll be more than happy you answered. Spend your days at Shoreline Park, Summer Cove and Russell Landing Marina.

Nestled on the peninsula opposite NCO Beach, Shoreline Park offers wading areas ranging from 2–4 ft. deep and pavilion rentals. Bring a picnic, splash around and take a leisurely stroll. It’s about a mile and a half walk between Shoreline Park and Summer Cove.

The sandy shores at Summer Cove bring the beach to JBLM and amenities include a large playground, splash park and picnic tables. Add in the shallow wading area and views of Mount Rainier, and you’ve got yourself an ideal setting for your family-friendly summer outings.

You’re sure to enjoy the shore life, but of course, there’s plenty of fun to be had out on the water, too. Russell Landing Marina has everything you need to glide right into life on the water. Boat, kayak or stand-up paddleboard rentals are available, and the retail shop sells small snacks and lots of goodies to enhance your days out in the sun.

(continued on next page)

Please remember, safety first! There are no lifeguards on duty at American Lake, and the water temperatures in Washington remain constant throughout the year. Hypothermia is a risk even in summer, swimming is at your own risk and life jackets should be worn for all water sport activities. In addition, alcohol is prohibited at JBLM public access beaches (see exception information online), and beach cleanliness is everyone’s

responsibility. Plan to pack out what you bring in.

The playground at Summer Cove is open year-round, and Shoreline Park and Russell Landing Marina are open seasonally. Rental prices for all pavilions and water sport activities, boating and paddling requirements, contact information, operating seasons and hours plus more details can be found on the Outdoor Recreation section of our website.

Extend your adventures

Do you wish your excursions could last more than one day? On the summer Outdoor Rec calendar, there are several overnight trips! It’s time to book that mini-getaway you’ve been craving.

First up is a Kayak Camp Trip, Saturday, Aug. 10–Sunday, Aug. 11. In a mix between camping and glamping, you’ll also be able to get out on the lake to kayak or paddleboard. On Friday, Aug. 9 from 5–7 p.m., a mandatory meeting for the trip will be held to go over the packing list, gear and itinerary for the adventure.

In September, head to the Goat Rocks Wilderness for an overnight backpacking trip to take in some of the best scenery the Pacific Crest Trail has to offer. Participants for this trip should be able to carry up to 40 pounds for a total of 23 miles covered during the three-day trip. Later in the month, an Alpine Lakes overnight trip is in the works. Participants will explore Snow Lake, Gem Lake and Wildcat Lake while experiencing an elevation gain of a little more than 4,000 ft. during the hikes totaling 14.3 miles. An extra bonus to this trip will be having the chance to learn how to fly-fish with an Outdoor Rec fly-fishing guide.

Lastly, one overnight trip is for women only, and it is an Intro to Backpacking course/trip combo. The classroom learning portion will take place at the Northwest Adventure Center on Tuesday, Aug. 20 from 4–6 p.m., and the two-day, one night backpacking trip will be on the weekend following: Saturday, Aug. 24–Sunday, Aug. 25.

Do you have an adventure in mind? Outdoor Recreation trip leaders will help you make it happen. Come sit down with one of us and let us help you plan your adventure. If you have any questions about trip details, participant restrictions, booking a private trip or packing lists, please feel free to ask the friendly Outdoor Rec staff. All trips are available for registration through WebTrac, or you may call 253-967-7744 or stop by the Northwest Adventure Center, 8050 NCO Beach Rd., Lewis North.

Prep for the upcoming school year

Summer break is here, but a new school year will begin before you know it!

It will be a fresh start for some and a new school and new teachers for others. Students anticipate new classmates, a new classroom and the chance to see their friends again. Some students may be nervous about how hard the work will be and if they will make new friends.

As their parents, you’re also excited for your student’s fresh start and might be nervous about whether the services and supports your child needs will be in place. You can help reduce your youth’s stress (and your own) by planning ahead and establishing a positive relationship with the classroom teacher and the school.

JBLM School Support Services offers you some insight into how to prepare your students for the start of the upcoming school year.

Helping your child get ready for school in mid-August

Here are some tips on preparing your youth for their new school or grade:

• Talk positively about school and remind them what they liked last year.

• Ask questions to find out what your child is looking forward to and what might be worrying them. Provide reassurance.

• Walk or drive to school to visit the school grounds.

• Post a calendar where the daily and weekly assignments can be recorded. Mark special events on the calendar.

• Establish a daily routine. A week before school starts, make sure your youth goes to bed and gets up earlier.

Follow these tips for your elementary school student:

• Move bedtime back a half-hour each week about four weeks before school starts until you reach the desired bedtime for your child.

• Talk to your child about expectations for the school year.

• Organize your child’s school supplies and backpack a week before school starts.

• Help them pick out clothes for school.

• Keep talk about school positive and point out the good things about going to school.

For your middle and high schoolers:

• Go shopping to gether to get school supplies.

• Talk about after-school activities they would like to participate in and make necessary arrangements.

• Address any concerns your preteen/teen may have about going back to school.

• Focus on the parts of school that they enjoy. Remind them of different extra-curricular

activities they can join.

• Ensure they have a designated space for homework.

When schools, parents and students work together, school can be an opportunity for tremendous development. Students who feel comfortable in their new environment are able to learn and grow effectively.

School registration

Registration for most school districts is being conducted online only. The following documents are needed:

• Proof of residency (housing lease/utility bill).

• Birth certificate (kindergarten only).

• Immunization records.

• Last report card from previous school (if applicable).

• IEP/504 plan (if applicable).

If you’re just arriving

Let the School Liaison Officer know you are here — we can help you get into a district

school.

Get a youth sponsor who can help you maneuver all the things you want to know about JBLM and schools locally. You can email us to get started (details on page 8).

Regardless of whether you’re leaving or arriving at JBLM, remember to bring the school name, address and telephone number of the school you just left.

Homeschool Hub

Discover homeschool resources

Blending school and home? As a new school year approaches, uncover the support, opportunities and resources available for homeschool families. Several MWR locations can help you expand your homeschool options (next page). One ongoing program is Homeschool Hub at McChord Library. The program is spearheaded by Candace Hickey each fourth Monday of the month during the school year. Candace shared that it’s, “a great place for social interaction with other kids and a chance to learn something new.”

So, what can you expect when attending Homeschool Hub? All homeschool families and students of all ages are welcome to attend, but the usual crowds have been students in preschool through eighth grade. Students attend with their parent(s) and the hour-long session is formatted to fit both student and home-educator learning needs.

Candace always selects a brief lesson and pulls a few library books to match the lesson’s theme. She starts off with an explanation of

what the students will learn about, completes an interactive read aloud of one the books and guides the students in completing an associated activity. Parents are encouraged to participate in the lesson with their children, and then the meeting wraps up with time for questions and information about library resources for homeschool families. The resource review portion of the hour serves as an introduction of options for newcomers and reinforcement for seasoned homeschool pros. Of the families we chatted with, some were brand new to the homeschool experience and just getting started while others have managed their home-based education for years and at multiple duty stations.

To learn more about the workbooks, how-to homeschool manuals, online resources, books, apps and websites available through the libraries, plan to stop by McChord Library’s classroom from 1–2 p.m. on the next Homeschool Hub Monday. To learn about homeschooling as an option while you’re here in Washington, visit the School Support Services section of our website.
